EXTERIOR DESIGN

This flybridge yacht, with a length overall of 53’7”, takes the distinctive design elements of the Monte Carlo range and enhances the details, while integrating the demands of customers into an elegant profile.  Sleeker and more spacious, the Monte Carlo 52 represents the pinnacle of modern style.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Your first impression when entering the salon is the space engineered into the design. Port and starboard side windows drop below the furniture to create a feeling of excess beyond the 15’ beam.  Available in two wood choices, choose your theme: Mediterranean beach house or cozy modern. The Monte Carlo 52 has masterfully created defined sleeping spaces onboard with a full beam aft stateroom with walk-in closet and bathroom behind the bed.  The designers paid particular attention to the usability of these spaces. The below deck guest quarters are aesthetically beautiful and will impress all aboard.

Longer, sleeker, more spacious, and with a greater beam than her predecessor, the Monte Carlo 52’s distinctive style was conceived by a team of world-famous architects and designers: Carlo Nuvolari & Dan Lenard for the exterior line and Andréani Design for the interior accommodation and supurb use of space.  

PERFORMANCE

The running surface was designed in partnership with MICAD to optimize the IPS propulsion and to put particular emphasis on comfort while underway.  Performance is defined by comfort, capability, and frugality, not top end speed.

BATHED IN LIGHT

The Monte Carlo 52 design maximizes your access to natural light.  Big windows are only part of the story.  The layout of the salon is based on how you use your boat: an ergonomic galley where you want it - aft and connected to the cockpit - and inviting and conversational seating areas at window height connect you to the water.

Navetta 52 - The Absolute Appeal

Fifty-two feet of pure Absolute innovation, featuring unsurpassed comfort and elegance while at harmony with the sea.

This boat offers significantly higher livability than that found on other similarly sized yachts, without giving up performance or reliability.

The fly area has a well-equipped helm area surrounded by sofas, an outdoor galley with a comfortable dining table, and a panoramic terrace. At the bow, you find spacious, modular sun loungers that are highly versatile and encourage socializing.

Inside the main salon, the 360-degree view makes you almost feel surrounded by picturesque windows displaying the ocean. The decor is elegant and refined, the spacious galley is well-equipped, and can be connected to the cockpit to create a functional open space that overlooks the water.

The helm station is modern and ergonomic, integrated with EmpirBus home automation technology, and equipped with a comfortable side door to ensure full autonomy of the shipowner, even during maneuvering operations.

Thanks to the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system, the performance is excellent and the fuel consumption is reduced.

The lower deck is equipped with sliding doors for space optimization and includes three cabins; two double,one twin, and two heads. The ceiling height is excellent with space maximized to the fullest, providing every guest with the ultimate in livability.

The spacious full-beam master cabin is placed midship, with a large double bed, a desk, a vanity area, and panoramic windows on both sides. The walk-in closet, the low pieces of furniture along both sides, and the drawers under the bed ensure maximum comfort for storing luggage.

At the bow, the VIP cabin is generously furnished and with its color contrasts, combined with the great brightness, contributes to its elegance. Finally, the third bedroom has two single berths.

The hull’s glazing, resembling a short, tanto-bladed knife and a vertical bow up front, also added to the contemporary design. Undulating LED lighting inlays in the cockpit overhang imparted a cool, sophisticated look to the space. At the same time, a starboard-side docking station spoke to this boat’s bona fides as a serious cruising machine.

The salon also had design touches that one might not expect to find on a 52-ft. semi-custom build. The aft galley had a four-burner Bosch cooktop and a six-foot-tall, stacked refrigerator and freezer that is useful for longer trips. The drawers all had chic leather tabs as handles, extending a beach-like, elegant vibe to the space.

The starboard-side helm was another place onboard that feels just a little bit different than the standard offerings in this size and class.

Twin Garmin screens were angled off in a small arc, as opposed to facing straight back, which gave them a slightly futuristic feel. Tightly stitched helix patterns in the seat-backs of the helm chairs pointed towards a high level of fit and finish.

A sturdy door next to the helm led to the side deck. Perhaps most important for the helmsperson, the Volvo Penta joystick control was maneuverable while standing on that side deck. The joystick and cockpit control station should make docking this boat easier than a conventional setup.

One of the other significant layouts was the flybridge. Absolute managed to make it look stylish and large, without appearing top heavy. The design included a large forward lounge surrounding the helm station, with back-to-front seats to port, and an L-shaped lounge extending back to the transom, with a center dining table. The side island with fridge can also double as a serving station. The overhead hardtop had an opening center window, and stereo speakers were embedded into the bridge.

Our final impression after a tour aboard: The Absolute 52 Fly was more than the sum of its parts. The boat was full-featured without looking crowded, but also highly functional. This 52-footer was clearly ready for a weekend cruise or extended voyage. The Italian builder proved that a well-conceived design makes for a well-rounded boat.

52 Pilothouse

The first Apollonian model is a 52’ pilothouse with a 16’ 10” beam and wide walk-arounds. It has a massive interior, spacious salon aft of the galley, dinette, three huge staterooms, two heads, and a day head in the pilothouse. The traditional raised pilothouse layout has proven to be a functional standard in comfort and onboard livability.

The interior features abundant American cherry, including book matched burled cabinet tops. The galley is fully furnished with household-sized stainless-steel appliances and plenty of storage. On board the Gulf Crosser 52 yacht - fast, nimble and attention-grabbing

Hunt James is a man who can do what he wants. With clear blue eyes and a stubborn chin, he emanates the kind of muscular enthusiasm for his work that is a hallmark of many serial entrepreneurs. Of course, most serial entrepreneurs cannot lay claim to negotiating the naming rights to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

This is to say, James and his latest endeavour, Gulf Crosser Yachts, are not strapped by many rules. This isn’t a builder beholden to churning out anything even remotely cookie-cutter in the name of profit margins. Instead, Hunt James builds boats exactly as he sees fit.

“We can take the 52 in whatever direction you want,” James says. “We can customise it until it’s a totally different boat. Want a hot tub in the cockpit? We can do that.”

It was appropriate that I boarded the Gulf Crosser (née Gulfstream ) in the Coral Gables section of Miami. The southernmost neighbourhood in the city, it spans the difference between a bustling metropolis and leisurely Florida Key living, albeit in a highly luxe package - qualities that align perfectly with my test boat.

This 52 is many things. It would be easy to peg her as a monster centre console, but with an enclosed pilothouse, she isn’t quite that. She’s also a walkaround, with side decks designed by Ward Setzer to be wide enough to accommodate human hips –  but her knuckled lines and military-esque appearance are the opposite of most walkarounds. At 15.84 metres (52ft) and with a Bausch tuna tower set-up, she is large enough to compete with many convertibles in terms of both interior and fish-fighting space, but she’s no battlewagon. And with a top end nosing into the 50-knot range, she is arguably in go-fast territory, though she’d look odd on a poker run.

So what is this boat then, exactly? “Well, it’s something I dreamed up,” James says with a smile. “I wanted all these features, and I knew my customers did too. I can take this boat over to the Abacos with a few friends, and cruise at 36 to 40 knots, get there in six hours, hit the dock and we’re good to go.”

The 52’s no muss, no fuss styling lends it to efficiency of use. As James implied, cleaning – as well as engine maintenance –is simple here. But the boat can also easily handle almost any waterborne activity. A dive door to port allows for scuba, and free-divers to get in and out of the boat with ease, and makes landing large fish possible as well. To that end, a stand for rocket launchers or a partial fighting chair can be placed in the centre of the cockpit, though the piece can also be swapped out for a table when cruising and relaxing are the main goals. 

My pick for best seat in the house when doing that cruising is the lounge in the bow seating area. It was remarkably ergonomic when I laid down on it, and also notable for the fact that it sits in a neat little wind pocket created by the boat’s high freeboard and Carolina flare. 

Even at very high speed, you can relax there without getting buried by an avalanche of wind.

Very high speed is, of course, key. The Michael Peters -designed hull is the same design used by the Navy Seals on their CCM (Combatant Craft Medium), which the frogmen use for maritime interdictions and counter-terrorism operations. 

Peters himself likes the twin-stepped hull a lot when paired with the 600hp Mercury Verados (quads) that were bolted to the transom of my test boat. “With the Merc counter-rotating props there is more low-end thrust and that brings the boat up a lot flatter, without digging a hole. The stern gets up quite a bit,” Peters says.  

The flatter running angle is useful if you have a machine gun bolted to the bow, but for us civilians, it translates happily to excellent sight lines from the helm.

Running the boat was nothing shy of joy-inducing. She slashed through high-speed turns with the stability and sure-handedness that are requisite for peace of mind on speedboats. With the throttle pinned she sizzled her way up to 54 knots, though it doesn’t feel that fast at the wheel. Her smooth acceleration, wave-dicing hull and enclosed, air-conditioned pilothouse combined to give the feeling of driving a turbo-charged sedan. 

You don’t realize how fast you’re actually going until you glance to your side and see the waves firing past at a breakneck pace. When I did that, I caught James’s eye as he lounged at the U-shaped seating behind me, and we exchanged a knowing grin. This thing is fun. She’s also finished.

This boat and her larger, soon-to-be sister, just over 20 metres (66ft), will inevitably draw comparisons to the massive HCB centre consoles that patrol many ports of call that superyachts call home. And for my money (not my actual money though – the 52 retails at around the $2.5 million USD mark) they’ll provide stiff competition in the tender market. 

Setzer feels the same way, and is particularly proud of the boat’s fit and finish. “There are micro-details all over the boat,” he says. “The handrails curve to your hand and the house floats on a toe kick – those are small ergonomic things that go a long way for your experience and comfort on board. And then you look at stuff like the gutters, the hatches, the gunwales… we paid a lot of attention to all the little things on this boat, the faring, the welding, it’s all high level."

As I climbed the tuna tower with James to get to the upper helm, I marvelled at the smooth welding on the ladder, scratching at it for seams, and found none. When we got up top, I huddled in on myself, pulling at my light windbreaker against an unusually brisk Miami day. James must have noticed I was cold. “You know,” he said, “we can go back down inside the house. It’s a lot warmer down there. But we can do whatever you want.”

If you were to take your partner or family to some of the world’s most remote waters, exploring the oceans from the tropics to the polar regions, which yachts would you shortlist for the job? Be honest.

For true peace of mind, for something that will look after you in all conditions, including shallow anchorages and drying harbours, you would probably relegate performance, speed and response on the helm to the back of your mind and focus on finding the sailing equivalent of a 4×4 off-road vehicle.

The Garcia Exploration 52 ticks all the boxes. It’s a rugged, aluminium bluewater cruiser with a shallow keel, lifting centreboard and twin rudders that enable it to dry out. But it is not simply a bare metal battleship; it also includes a deck saloon with an internal steering position, and premium accommodation.

It is a yacht that seamlessly blends the world of luxury cruising with out-and-out expedition yachting. It invites you to go off the beaten path, but in substantial comfort.

The Exploration 52 is in every sense the larger sister of the original Exploration 45, which was conceived by bluewater cruising guru Jimmy Cornell and designed to be a go-anywhere yacht. Cornell, the founder of the ARC , has logged over 200,000 cruising miles. His brief for Garcia, and designers Berret-Racoupeau, was to create both the ideal bluewater cruiser and a yacht rugged enough to take on the North West Passage .

“I wanted a strong, fast, comfortable, functional and easily handled boat perfectly suited for both high latitude and tropical sailing,” said Cornell, declaring the resulting Exploration 45: “as close as can be to my ideal long-distance cruising boat.”

The Exploration 52 shares the angular, robust look of the 45, including the bare alloy hull and the reverse angled, ship’s bridge-style coachroof windows, but offers more space, stowage and comfort.

The build quality is also the 45’s equal, incorporating watertight fore and aft bulkheads. The bow/forefoot section is reinforced for ice breaking and includes a towing eye so that the yacht can be dragged ashore with a tractor, if necessary. Yet within the alloy hull and its welded stringers, you’ll find a wonderfully warming, high-quality finish, a forward facing navstation and a deck saloon offering 270° views.

Aquarius , the yacht we tested, was the first Garcia Exploration 52 to launch and was highly customised for its owners, who were setting off for the Canaries the following day on the first leg of a five-year world tour. The family/utility cabin was being used for loading a cargo of medical supplies bound for Senegal.

Like Cornell’s boat, which was designed to sleep a number of friends and family, the interior of Aquarius has a flexible layout that can accommodate up to ten at a time. Yet on the 52, unlike the 45, the interior feels neither cramped nor short of stowage.

We sailed the Garcia Exploration 52 in fine conditions from La Rochelle, with a Force 3 to 4 and only a slight sea. Under genoa and main we achieved 6 to 6.5 knots pointing at 45° to 50° to the apparent wind. She certainly felt like a sturdy 20 plus tonne yacht.

Aquarius was laden with a few tonnes of extra payload (she can carry 6.5 tonnes over her lightweight displacement) and the resultant helm sensation was more neutral and purposeful than particularly rewarding.

But once we footed off to reach at 100° to the apparent wind, and hoisted the A-sail, we were averaging a respectable 9 knots in 12 to 15 knots of wind. Once under way, she keeps a consistent speed, our maximum on the day was 9.5 knots.

But heat the Garcia Exploration 52 up too much and you can lose grip on the rudders. I found this a little surprising for an ocean cruiser with twin rudders, but bear in mind the blades are deliberately short for beaching purposes.

Indeed, designer Olivier Racoupeau confirmed that the blades are 1.15m deep compared to 1.45m on a more conventional non-centreboard design, but says that the shallow draught of the Garcia Exploration 52’s rudders is by no means extreme.

I enjoyed the sail, but only when there was enough apparent wind in the sails. Aquarius has the optional cutter rig with genoa and a self-tacking staysail, which is an ideal way to adapt the sailplan to suit conditions. The staysail is used in 25 knots plus, according to Garcia, hence we sailed under full genoa.

Once the wind was down to eight knots we were wallowing at 4.5 knots under white sails. Any negative thoughts about the Exploration 52 being sluggish, however, need to be balanced by the fact that she was fully laden for world cruising. Two pallets of medical equipment filled the starboard cabin and her full tanks added an extra two tonnes.

Admittedly the rig looks short, confirmed by her conservative sail area/displacement ratio, but this is all in keeping with the go-anywhere, dependable nature of this boat. The centreboard obviously reduces the amount of ballast beneath the water, but Garcia and designers Berret-Racoupeau address this with smart weight allocation.

The fresh water can be pumped from side to side for ballast, the tanks are low and central, and even the chainlocker and windlass are located well abaft the bow, near the mast foot.

The hard-top that overhangs the coachroof on Aquarius is customised to the owner’s height. The area beneath this overhang can be sealed off with a canopy, trapping the heat coming up from the interior. I cannot recall a better cockpit position from which to stand a watch, no matter what the weather.

Of course, the navstation down below would provide even greater shelter, but it gives me shivers just thinking about how bad the conditions would need to be for me to need more shelter than the forward end of this cockpit!

The cockpit is set up for the crew to sail the boat without needing to leave its protection. The inboard primaries are just in front of the twin helms – a practical and safe position to work – and all control lines are brought aft under the coachroof where they can be easily managed.

There are useful cubby holes in the coamings to keep rope tails tidy. I particularly like the Marine Deck cork decks and cockpit surfaces, which the owner specified. This material is cheaper and more sustainable than teak, yet it’s grippy, comfortable for bare feet and can be washed with soap and water.

Aesthetically, the stern arch will attract and repel buyers in equal measure. Aboard the Garcia Exploration 52 it is a practical solution for mounting an array of aerials, solar panels, a wind generator and even the davits, although when sailing offshore, the tender can be hoisted on to the foredeck using the genoa pole.

Aquarius is also fitted with a hydrogenerator. “At over six knots running speed, the Watt&Sea hydrogenerator should cover all our power needs,” says the owner.

Step through a pair of heavy-duty doors and you move from sheltered cockpit into a haven of comfort. The deck saloon has 270° sightlines out of the slanted coachroof windows. You can see the horizon while standing in the galley and adjust the autopilot or operate the throttle from the forward-facing navstation.

It is a relaxing and settling interior, finished in either teak or oak. There is a step down to reach the accommodation forward or abaft the saloon, as with any deck saloon, but the benefits include light, space and views plus the central stowage and tankage beneath the floorboards. There is even space to increase the standard 1,000lt fuel capacity by an extra 400lt.

“One of my requests was to be able to sleep up to ten at a time,” said Aquarius ’s owner. To this end, the starboard midships cabin can be used for stowage or sleeping, and the port aft cabin has a second fold-down bunk. The deck saloon table also lowers to form a large bed.

The comfortable forward cabin contains an offset double berth directly in front of the main bulkhead, so the owners won’t feel like they are in the bows of the boat. Instead the heads and shower are situated forward, with two watertight bulkheads further forward.

The engine room is abaft the companionway, and is well insulated with access both sides. The 660Ah battery bank is located centrally. In addition to the solar, wind and hydropower, generators, there is a diesel genset and second alternator.

Watertight hatches in the aft cabins provide access to the stern compartments and all through-hull fittings are welded in aluminium with valves above the waterline. There are separate wet and dry hanging areas in the aft heads compartment.

The Garcia Exploration 52 combines a belt-and-braces expedition vessel with a silver-plated luxury cruiser. Owners may not set any speed records or spend too long at the wheel, but they will cruise off the beaten track in exceptional comfort, whether in the cockpit or down below. Where Jimmy Cornell squeezed stowage and accommodation slightly on his 45 so he could have eight berths for friends and family, the 52 has the extra length to provide all the space and stowage you could wish for. For those with the ambition, the Garcia Exploration 52 is the ultimate go-anywhere yacht that also caters for the crew that has no wish to rough it. People smuggling gangs are packing larger numbers of migrants onto flimsy boats, shocking new figures analysed by MailOnline have shown. 

On average, gangs are squeezing an average of 52 migrants on each boat - increasing the danger for those making the hazardous crossing. Almost 1,100 migrants arrived in the UK over the weekend. 

So far this year, at least 39 migrants have died while making the crossing - with eight losing their lives on Saturday. 

In July, during the trial of Albanian national Eglantin Doksani, 24, it emerged that his smuggling gang were charging migrants £3,000 for a seat on a boat.  

Since January 1, some 23,544 migrants have crossed the English Channel on board 447 boats. 

In 2018, 499 migrants arrived in the UK on 43 small boats - an average of almost 7 people per vessel .

That average increased to 11 in 2019, and then to 13 in 2020. By 2021 the average increased to 27 and rose again in 2022 to 41. Last year the average was almost 49 people per boat. That figure has increased again this year to 52.7 migrants. 

Commenting on the figures, A Home Office spokesperson said: 'We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings , which threaten lives and undermine our border security.

'As we have seen with so many recent devastating tragedies in the Channel, the people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay. We will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.

'We are making progress, bolstering our personnel numbers in the UK and abroad. Our new Border Security Command will strengthen our global partnerships and enhance our efforts to investigate, arrest, and prosecute these evil criminals.'

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Government has appointed Martin Hewitt , the police chief who oversaw the UK's enforcement of Covid 19 lockdown laws as head of the new Border Security Command. 

Sir Keir Starmer travelled to Italy to discuss the migration crisis as he seeks to 'reset' relations with the EU. 

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has overseen a 60 per cent drop in the number of arrivals on small boats over the past year. =

Sir Keir, who announced he was axing the previous Tory administration's Rwanda deportation policy as one of his first moves in office, declared there would be 'no more gimmicks' to curb migration.

'This Government will tackle the smuggling gangs who trade the lives of men, women and children across borders,' he said.

'Martin Hewitt's unique expertise will lead a new era of international enforcement to dismantle these networks, protect our shores and bring order to the asylum system.'

Mr Hewitt previously co-ordinated all of Britain's police forces as they enforced controversial new rules governing lockdowns introduced by then-prime minister Boris Johnson's administration.

The emergency legislation was criticised by some as rushed and inconsistently applied while the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) revealed some people had been wrongfully charged under the laws.

Mr Hewitt will now be in charge of joining up law enforcement and intelligence agencies to lead joint investigations with European counterparts to address organised immigration crime, No 10 said.

The former officer, who also helped shape national responses to major security threats including terrorism in his role as NPCC chairman, said he was 'under no illusions of the challenges that lie ahead' and 'determined to face them head-on.'

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the new border unit would allow the Government to go 'much further' in taking action against people-smuggling gangs.

'With the Border Security Command we can go much further – building new law enforcement partnerships across Europe and getting new powers into place, to go after the gangs, tackle dangerous boat crossings and save lives,' she said.

It comes after eight migrants died while trying to cross the Channel overnight as some 801 migrants made the journey on Saturday – the second highest daily total so far this year, according to provisional Home Office figures.

Both Sir Keir and Mr Hewitt are expected to visit Italy's National Co-ordination Centre during his trip, where they will be briefed on their response to irregular migration.

The Prime Minister is also set to sign a joint communique outlining further co-operation with Rome on migration, growth and defence.

Sir Keir has signalled he is open to pursuing an arrangement similar to Italy's migration deal with Albania, whereby asylum seekers will be held in the Balkan state while their claims are processed.

The scheme has been criticised by human rights campaigners as unworkable but the Italian government argues it is necessary to reduce migrant arrivals by sea.

Unlike the Rwanda policy, asylum seekers whose applications are successful would be able to enter Italy under the plans.
