Yachttest der Bali 4.0
Bali 4.0: alleinstellungsmerkmale.
Aus dem Stand fand Bali Catamarans durchaus Alleinstellungsmerkmale. So gibt es keine Trampoline mehr vorn zwischen den Rümpfen, sondern ein komplettes festes Deck. Der Platz wird für eine Sitzgruppe und Liegeflächen genutzt, ein veritables zweites Cockpit vor dem Deckshaus.
Die Vorteile: Liegt das Boot wie im Mittelmeer üblich mit dem Heck zur Pier, sitzt man im Frontcockpit privater. Vor Anker und unterwegs hält sich die Crew auf Wunsch im Wind auf, und es gibt alles in allem mehr Sitz- und Liegeflächen. Ein ähnliches, wenn auch weniger konsequentes Konzept verfolgt Robertson & Caine mit seiner Leopard-Reihe. Im Gegensatz zu den Südafrikanern gibt es aber auf dem Bali keine Verbindungstür zum Vorschiff, sondern eine große absenkbare Fensterfront im Deckshaus. Diese fungiert als Durchreiche und Lüftungsmöglichkeit.
Bali 4.0: Das Deckshaus
Eine weitere Besonderheit ist das große Cockpit, das offen ins Deckshaus übergeht. Soll das Boot komplett verriegelt werden, schließt die Crew die seitlichen Schiebefenster. Und zieht über einen pneumatisch unterstützten Mechanismus die ganze Rückwand des Deckshauses unter dem Dach hervor und klappt diese nach unten. Dann ist das Boot akustisch, thermisch und optisch so geschlossen wie mit einem konventionellen Deckshaus. Maximale Öffnung bei schönen Bedingungen einerseits, fester Wetterschutz nach Wunsch andererseits ist das große Plus des Bootes.
Vom Cockpitende bis zur Aufbaufront gibt es nur eine Ebene, der Raum wird zur offenen Wohnküche oder zur Terrasse mit Kochmöglichkeit, ganz, wie es die Crew ehen will. Ansonsten sind auf dieser Ebene noch eine Navigation untergebracht – und ein Kühlschrank, der vom Boden bis zur Decke reicht. Bei Bavarias Nautitech-Katamaranen der Open-Reihe verfolgt die Werft an Deck ähnliche Ziele, schließt den Außenbereich aber lediglich mit Tuchbahnen und bedient sich dafür einer festen Deckshaus-Rückwand mit einer großen Schiebetür. Auch um die fehlende versteifende Statik eines geschlossenen Deckshauses zu kompensieren, wird der Bali 4.0 recht aufwändig gebaut.
Die Rumpfinnenseiten und die Unterseiten des Brücken- und des Vordecks werden in einem Stück laminiert, und dies im Vakuum-Infusionsverfahren. Diverse einlaminierte sowie eingeformte Verstärkungen sorgen für zusätzliche Festigkeit. Weitere Vorteile: Die Stummelkiele sind einzelne Bauteile, die an die Rümpfe geklebt werden und die im Falle einer heftigen Grundberührung abfallen sollen. Dennoch ist der Kat trockenfalltauglich und kann im Winterlager auf den Kielen abgestellt werden. Weiterhin sind die Bugspitzen als Crashboxen ausgeführt.
Platz ist ein weiteres wichtiges Thema an Bord: Eine 2,30 Meter lange Cockpitducht, zwei Meter Stehhöhe im Deckshaus, das Frontcockpit und die Liegeflächen vorn machen Freude unterwegs, vor Anker und im Hafen. Besonders wiederum der erhöhte Steuerstand, der den Rudergänger vereinsamen lässt, da er vom Cockpit getrennt ist. Es sei denn, Mitsegler folgen ihm auf den zweiten Sitzplatz oder die Decksliege auf dem festen Bimini-Dach. Sämtliche Bedienelemente konzentrieren sich am Rad, Fallen, Strecker und Schoten. Die Übersicht ist okay, wobei das Backbordheck schlecht eingesehen werden kann, was typisch für die gewählte Konfiguration des komplett separierten Kommandostandes an Steuerbord ist. Im Deckshaus realisiert der Importeur Blue Yachting aus Bremen auf Wunsch eine zweite Brücke mit Joystick und elektronischer Motorsteuerung.
Bali 4.0: Katamaran unter Segeln
Das Rigg steht relativ weit achtern, dadurch kann die auf Kats eher seltene Selbstwendefock größer und effektiver ausfallen. In dem Kontext: Das Vorsegel benötigt man nicht zum Unterstützen der Wende, der Bali dreht ganz vorzüglich. Zumindest bei dem glatteren Wasser im Test vor La Grande Motte in Südfrankreich, der nach der dort veranstalteten Multihull-Messe stattfand.
Wie er überhaupt den Menschen am Rad durch recht ordentliche Geschwindigkeiten ebenso zu überzeugen vermag wie durch eine hübsche Agilität am Rad, die bei weitem nicht jedem Zweirumpfer innewohnt. Das macht Freude, durchaus. Gleiches gilt für den Speed: Bei bis zu 15 Knoten Wind schafft der Bali 4.0 rund 7,5 Knoten am Wind, bezahlt dies aber auch mit einem Wendewinkel von gut 110 Grad. Höher an den Wind funktioniert und wäre sinnvoll, um sich Wenden zu sparen, kostet aber viel Speed. Beim Test ging es bis zu 8,2 Knoten schnell bei halbem Wind, ohne einen Code Zero oder Gennaker, was auch auf dem Kat wünschenswerte Turbos sind.
Bali 4.0: Cockpit, Stauräume und Verarbeitung
Die man gut in die Bugstauräume oder in die beiden Kisten vor dem Aufbau packen kann, in denen auch die Tanks und die Ankervorrichtung untergebracht sind. Der Stauraum im Cockpit ist recht begrenzt. Ebenfalls kattypisch: Die beiden Motoren sind achtern in den Hecks in begehbaren Maschinenkammern untergebracht, die von den Innenräumen komplett separiert sind und somit lästige Gerüche und Geräusche fernhalten.
Der Cockpitabschluss lässt sich abklappen und öffnen, ein großer Schwenkbügel dient als Davit für das Dingi, und durch die festen überstehenden Hecks ist das Zweibein längsseits und vom Beiboot aus einfach zu besteigen.
Draußen ist somit vieles fein: Ordentlich Platz, das besondere Deckshaus-Cockpit-Konzept und die Segeleigenschaften sprechen für den Bali 4.0. Auffällig waren am Testschiff jedoch auch ein beuliger Fußboden im Deckshaus sowie insgesamt der recht grosszügige Einsatz von Dichtungsrnasse in Fugen und Übergängen. Und insgesamt wird's unten in den Rümpfen spürbar enger, was Türen, Kojen und generelle Platzverhältnisse speziell im Steuerbordrumpf mit zwei Kabinen betrifft.
Bali 4.0: Unter Deck
Die Gestaltung ist alles in allem recht kattypisch: nüchtern, hell und simpel in der Optik ebenso wie in der Bauausführung. Die Werft bietet das Boot mit drei oder vier Kabinen sowie zwei, drei oder vier Bädern an. In der Eignerversion nutzt dieser den gesamten Backbordrumpf und verfügt dort über eine Doppelkabine, einen Schreibtischund ein großes Bad im Vorschiff.
Gut: Der Rumpf lässt sich mit einer Schiebetür separieren. Damit ist ein katspezifischer Vorteil maximiert: Draußen und im Deckshaus kommt die Crew zusammen, nachts genießt sie optimale Privatsphäre. Insgesamt: Mit seinen Alleinstellungsmerkmalen ergänzt der Bali 4.0 den Markt. Entdeckung / Bali Catsmart: Komfort und Platz auf dem neuesten Modell der Werft Bali Catamarans

Außergewöhnliche Geräumigkeit für einen 38 Fuß
Der Catsmart übernimmt das Konzept, das Bali berühmt gemacht hat, nämlich die vollständige Überbrückung zwischen den Rümpfen. Die Oberfläche wird von den Bugs bis zu den Schürzen maximal ausgenutzt, was diesem 12,08 m langen Katamaran eine schöne Geschicklichkeit verleiht.
Eine weitere von Bali eingeführte Innovation ist das Cockpit, das vom Salon durch eine große Schwingtür getrennt ist, die sich, wenn sie geöffnet ist, perfekt in das Deck einfügt. Der Salon, die Küche und das Cockpit sind in einem einzigen Raum vereint, was die Geselligkeit und die Zirkulation verbessert.
Dieses Raumgefühl wird durch die vollständig verschiebbaren Seitenfenster noch verstärkt.
Verschiedene Ausstattungsvarianten
Um den Bedürfnissen des Chartermarktes gerecht zu werden, kann der Catsmart in eine 3- oder 4-Kabinen-Version umgebaut werden, mit einer Nasszelle in jedem Rumpf.
Die Catsmart ist eine Alternative zu den reinen Chartermodellen und kann auch als Eignerversion mit zwei Doppelkabinen eingerichtet werden. Dank der vielen Öffnungen in den Rümpfen herrscht ein angenehmes Tageslicht.
Die Küche nimmt die gesamte Breite des Salons ein und bietet eine hervorragende Arbeitsfläche. Viel Stauraum, sowie ein Kühlschrank und ein Gefrierschrank bestätigen das Programm dieses Fahrtenkatamarans.
Eine kleine Stufe unterbricht den ebenerdigen Übergang zwischen dem Salon und der Küche, aber diese sollte bei der Fortbewegung der Crew schnell assimiliert werden.
Auf der Backbordseite des Cockpits befindet sich der Salontisch, an dem acht Personen Platz finden. Der Tisch ist gegenüber einer großen, langen Sitzbank angeordnet, an deren Ende ein kleiner Kartentisch Platz findet.
Ein innovativer Brückenplan
Im Heck wird das Cockpit durch eine Insel mit einer Dreisitzbank und einem Plancha-Schrank abgeschlossen.
Aufgrund der vollständigen Überbrückung des Catsmart sind die Röcke daher recht kurz und können nicht von mehreren Personen belegt werden.
Die beiden Steuerstände mit Rädern sind auf den Rümpfen zurückversetzt und mit einer klappbaren Sitzfläche ausgestattet. Diese muss hochgeklappt werden, um in den Motorraum zu gelangen, der ein gutes Volumen bietet.
Alle Manöver werden vom Steuermann ausgeführt. Unter Segeln werden Wenden durch den selbstwendenden Solent erleichtert, und ein kleines Stück nach außen erlaubt das Setzen von Vorwindsegeln.
Im vorderen Teil des Decks befindet sich ein sehr geselliger Decksalon sowie eine riesige Sonnenliege. Das Ganze kann mit einem einfach zu installierenden, abnehmbaren Sonnensegel geschützt werden.
Die Leistung unter Segeln wurde optimiert, indem der Baum abgesenkt wurde, wodurch die Fläche des Großsegels vergrößert werden konnte. Der Verzicht auf Fly im Design ermöglichte diese Optimierung und verleiht dem Catsmart außerdem eine klarere Linie.
Preisgestaltung und Wettbewerb
Der Bali Catsmart schließt sich dem Markt der kleinen bewohnbaren Katamarane wie dem C-Cat 37 oder dem Excess 11 an, unterscheidet sich jedoch durch einen größeren Innenraum sowie einen sehr attraktiven Einführungspreis von ca. 325.450 Euro (ohne Steuern ).

Sailboat Review: New Models from Bali Catamaran

When Cruising World ’s Boat of the Year judges step aboard a new sailboat, the first thing they ask the builder for is the boat’s design brief. Racing? Bluewater voyaging? Coastal cruising? Chartering? Daysailing? What’s the boat built to do?
In the case of two new Bali Catamarans , introduced to North America this past fall during the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, the manufacturer’s intent seemed perfectly clear: These cats were built for hanging out on the water with family and friends, or perhaps for owners interested in putting them into a charter fleet to help pay the bills. “Pampered crew” were two words that came immediately to mind when I stepped aboard.
Both cats—the Bali 4.6 and Bali Catspace—were conceived of by Olivier Poncin, founder of the Catana Group, and designed by the in-house team that has been building well-respected performance catamarans at their yard in France for nearly four decades now.
When I think about Catana Catamarans, features such as daggerboards, sleek hulls and powerful sail plans designed to gobble up ocean miles come immediately to mind. When I think about Bali, my mind turns to comfortable surroundings and tropical anchorages, with soothing trade winds blowing through the saloon and multiple places to lounge in the sun or shade.
The Catana Group launched the Bali brand in 2014, on the company’s 30th anniversary. At the time, the multihull market was exploding, and while Catana had a strong following at the performance end of the speed-comfort continuum, their boats were expensive and geared to a niche market. Balis, on the other hand, were designed and built to be “more accessible in terms of price,” the company’s online brochure notes, and “therefore aimed at a wider clientele.” It’s no accident that many of those clients chose to add their Balis to charter fleets in the Caribbean and other tropical spots around the world. As a result, the brand took off, to the point where today, it takes up the bulk of Catana’s production capacity.
The 4.6 and Catspace share many of the same features found across the Bali Range: solid composite foredecks rather than the trampolines found on most catamarans; multiple spaces to kick back and relax; home-style refrigerators in the galleys; large sliding windows on the cabin sides; and garage-style doors that open and lift overhead aft in the saloon, making it difficult to discern where the interior stops and the great outdoors begins.
The sail-away prices of the boats we visited in Annapolis were $920,000 for the 4.6 and $550,000 for the Catspace. In all, Bali manufactures seven sailing models and two power cats, so buyers have options when it comes to size and price.
Bali hulls and decks are resin-infused and foam-cored, which makes them strong and stiff while saving weight. Throughout the range, Balis are built with short, fixed keels, affixed to relatively beamy hulls that have abundant load-carrying capacity. In practice, that means the boats can be loaded with gear such as air conditioning, appliances and generators—and toys and provisions for all the crew.
With a length overall of 44 feet, 6 inches, the 4.6 presents a number of interesting features and options. First, there is the flybridge, set atop the cockpit Bimini and a portion of cabin top abaft the mast. It can be reached via steps on either side deck. A helm station is to port, with a bench that seats two comfortably. Adjacent to it is a good-size table with L-shaped seating around it, and sun beds behind. The wheel itself is mounted on a pedestal, and there’s room to walk in front, between it and the winches mounted on the cabin top. With this arrangement, there’s room for the crew to jump in and help trim sails, though without helpers, it does require the skipper to rely on the autopilot when leaving the helm to tend to sheets.
Underway, I liked the setup. There was good visibility, both around the boat and also of the mainsail overhead, thanks to a window in the canvas Bimini. The main was simple to control using the double-ended sheet led to blocks on the corners of the flybridge, replacing the traveler. The arrangement is especially good for jibing.
In a good breeze, 10 to 12 knots, our speed over the ground hovered right around 5 knots; we added a knot to that when we bore off to a beam reach. If I bought the boat and didn’t have plans to put it into charter, I’d definitely add a code zero to my sail arsenal.
Down below, I liked the layout of the saloon as well. With the sliding windows and overhead door open, I had the feeling of being outside, sitting in the shade. The dining table is to port; two chairs are opposite. Forward of the table is an L-shaped galley to port with loads of counter space; a large fridge and freezer sits opposite, with a proper nav station tucked forward, surrounded by windows and adjacent to the centerline door leading to another lounge area on the foredeck.
Depending on how the boat will be used, there are a few different layouts for the staterooms and heads, ranging from a three-stateroom version, where the entire starboard hull is the owner’s en suite, to four- and even five-stateroom layouts. In the latter, access to the port aft stateroom is by a companionway from the cockpit, and a stateroom with bunk beds is amidships, with a third stateroom forward. Crew berths in either forepeak are also available.
The 4.6 we tested in Annapolis was powered by a pair of 57 hp Yanmars with saildrives; 45 hp Yanmars are standard.
A t just over 37 feet length overall, the Catspace is one of the smaller production cats available these days. It also has an airy feeling in the saloon’s dining and lounging area, thanks to a similar aft door arrangement. But space doesn’t permit a second door to the foredeck. Instead, there’s a larger center window that opens to let in the breeze, and the galley (including a full-size fridge) is in the forward starboard corner of the main cabin.
Available layouts include a three-stateroom version, where the owner’s stateroom occupies the port hull, or a charter-friendly four-stateroom layout, with athwartship bunks in the two forward staterooms.
As with its bigger sister, the Catspace has lounge areas on the foredeck and atop its flybridge. The helm station is up top too, to starboard, and is surrounded on the side and behind with cushions. Unlike the 4.6, the Catspace’s winches are close at hand when sitting at the wheel. A singlehander or skipper with a short-handed crew will appreciate this. I found access to the flybridge via stairs from either side deck to be quite good, with handholds located where I needed them.
Again, if I planned to buy and sail the Catspace, I’d include a code zero or some other all-round reaching sail to add a little more get-up-and-go. We went sailing in about 15 knots of wind and notched about 4 knots on the speedo closehauled. In a higher puff, I saw just under 6 knots reaching. But was it a comfortable ride? You bet.
As stated at the outset, sailboats are built to suit a purpose. During a Boat of the Year debrief this past fall, judge Tim Murphy told his colleagues that overall, he thought that the open-air concept incorporated into the design of the 4.6 and Catspace works quite well. Recalling a weeklong vacation spent with five friends aboard an earlier Bali model, he said, “On the charter, it was actually delightful.”

Neun Modelle in einem Längenspektrum von 40 bis 54 Fuß: Kein anderer Hersteller von Fahrtenkatamaranen verfügt über ein derart dichtes Programm wie Bali Catamarans mit Sitz in Canet-en-Roussilion in Südfrankreich. Jetzt aber will die Werft die Linie konzeptionell deutlicher abstufen und kündigt einen neuen Bali 4.4 an. Er soll gleich zwei ältere Typen ersetzen, den Bali 4.5, welcher der noch jungen Marke 2014 als Auftaktmodell vorstand, sowie den Bali 4.3 aus dem Jahr 2017.
Die generelle Bali-Idee ist auch beim neuen Schiff mehr oder weniger unverändert. So gesehen bleiben mit der Präsentation die ganz großen Überraschungen aus. Vielmehr präsentiert sich der neue 4.4 als Komplettüberarbeitung des 4.5, mit ähnlichen Dimensionen und einem moderneren, aber durchaus vergleichbaren Konzept. Vom kleineren 4.3 hingegen übernimmt das neues Schiff die funktionale Koppelung von Cockpit und Außencockpit mit Schiebefenstern und einer verglasten Rückwand, die sich wie ein Garagentor unter das feste Bimini hochklappen lässt. Damit kann der Außenbereich mit dem großen Esstisch bei Schlechtwetter oder Kälte komplett abgeschottet und zusätzlich auch beheizt werden. So verschmelzen Außen und Innen zur isolierbaren Wohneinheit.
Eine weitere, exklusive Besonderheit des Bali-Konzepts ist die von den Hecks bis ganz zu den Bugen durchlaminierte Blattform zwischen den Rümpfen. Das erlaubt es den Konstrukteuren, den Platz an Deck noch effizienter zu nutzen. Etwa mit einem sehr großen Frontcockpit im Vorschiff und einer großen Sonnenliege. Der Lounge-Bereich im Vorschiff ist durch ein wasserdicht verschließbares Schott auch direkt aus dem Salon erreichbar. Entspannen und relaxen kann man zudem in luftiger Höhe auf der Flybridge, wo nochmals eine Sonnenliege sowie auch eine Sofazeile mit Tisch zur Verfügung stehen.
Auch der Steuerstand ist auf dem Obergeschoss installiert. Alle Fallen, Schoten und Trimmleinen werden bis in die unmittelbare Erreichbarkeit vom Steuermann umgelenkt. Weil der Mast recht weit hinten steht, bleibt die Standard-Selbstwendefock im Vergleich groß. Für die Mehrleistung auf raumen Kursen sorgt ein Code Zero, der aber nur als Extra erhältlich sein wird.
Die Ausbaumöglichkeiten und Layoutvarianten entsprechen dem Klassenstandard. Bei der Eigenerversion ist der Backbord-Rumpf als großer, geschlossener Wohnbereich mit Doppelbett achtern und einem sehr geräumigen Bad im Vorschiff ausgebaut. Im Rumpf auf der Steuerbordseite sind zwei Kabinen mit jeweils eigener Nasszelle und Duschbereich vorgesehen. Für den Einsatz im Yachtcharter kann der Bali 4.4 auch mit einem gespiegelten Layout mit insgesamt vier Kabinen und vier Bädern ausgestaltet werden. In den Vorpieks lassen sich auf Wunsch zudem eine Koje sowie eine Nasszelle für den Skipper installieren.
Das erste Schiff vom Typ Bali 4.4 ist offenbar bereits im Bau und soll zum Herbst 2021 für Tests ins Wasser kommen. Das Boot wird zur Markteinführung für einen konkurrenzfähigen Preis von 554.300 Euro angeboten, inklusive 19 % Mehrwertsteuer.

The Bali 4.5 Catamaran Philosophy
The Catana Group, led by Olivier Poncin, decided to cast a wider net to attract the cruising sailor as well as their usual high performance clientele. However, because of the high level of customization and very high-tech building materials and building processes that Catana use in their performance catamaran range, it is usually fairly expensive and out of the reach of the average sailor. So, to mark their 30th anniversary, they designed a catamaran that would not only appeal to the cruising market but would come in at a reasonable price point. The Bali 4.5 catamaran was conceived from Olivier Poncin’s vision of a Catana-built cruising catamaran.
Catana smartly realized that to deliver a cruising catamaran to compete with Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, or Leopard cruising cats, it had to change its approach to the manufacturing process. It established a production line for the Bali range in their existing state-of-the-art-factory in France and, using existing infrastructure, staff and building methods, managed to speed up manufacturing. This meant that they could build more boats, faster. However, while they needed to reduce production costs, Catana insisted that they maintain the company’s core values of innovative design, technology and exceptional quality in the Bali range. The Bali 4.5 was unveiled for the first time to the sailing public in Cannes last year and this performance cruiser did not disappoint. While the Bali is less customizable than the Catana performance range, Catana still offers various options for equipment , finishes and 4 different layouts .
Design Concept And Manufacture
Poncin and designer, Xavier Fay, envisioned a catamaran with an “Open-Space” feeling throughout. To achieve this, they removed the trampolines, lengthened the forward cockpit to add a seating area and sunbathing area, added large vertical-sliding windows between the salon and forward cockpit with huge sliding doors onto the aft cockpit. This expands the living space literally from one end of the boat all the way to the other, uninterrupted on one level with great natural ventilation. People on board are completely connected at all times without ever feeling cramped in small spaces. This “Open Space” concept was the most commented-on thing about the Bali at the Miami boat show. It is really impressive and makes this 45ft cat appear so much more roomy that it’s competitors.
In the pictures below one can see the open space from the “drop down deck extention” in the aft cockpit, all the way to the front cockpit and lounging area with pass-throughs at the galley and forward window.
To create this flat open platform without any obstructions, Catana created a very stiff and strong platform/bridge deck with as little flexing as possible. They achieved this by using box sections within the bridge deck. This allowed for the removal of the rear bulkhead structure, opening up the space further while the solid foredeck further contributed to the stiffness of the boat. The foredeck is not just a flat piece of decking but is actually part of the bow with box sections, which makes it very buoyant. An integrated bowsprit further strengthens the front section.
At first this solid foredeck met with skepticism from critics. They predicted that the boat might be too heavy, not buoyant enough up forward and would encourage excessive slamming like it was with the old Prouts and Catalacs. These designers dealt with excess weight by fitting trampolines in the bows. However, with modern technology and super light and strong building materials, we simply don’t need trampolines to reduce weight significantly anymore. So Catana did away with the trampolines altogether, allowing for a stronger, stiffer and more buoyant platform. The bows are also slightly reversed, giving increased waterline and buoyancy as far forwards as possible.
The bottom of the forward deck has a pronounced angle (as seen in the picture below) leading upwards towards the front or cross beam. The center nacelle further adds buoyancy at the chest of the boat. This results in the tendency to climb out or rise out of the water rather than dig into the waves. The nacelle also acts as the drain box. The scuppers in the forward area are next to the windlass and drain into the drain box, from here the water is purged though scuppers at the back of the nacelle. They face to the rear on a flat surface in the trailing end of the nacelle. This design stops water from shooting back up through the scuppers in the forward cockpit when the boat bottoms out in rough seas.
The Bali is constructed with foam core that is resin infused resulting in a light strong vessel. The hull shape allows it to surf down waves easily and it has an above average bridgedeck clearance with good freeboard in the hull sections. The increased bridgedeck clearance and high freeboard (see picture below: Leopard 44 vs Bali 4.5) results in a very quiet ride with minimal slamming. If a wave does break on top of the foredeck, the scuppers will purge the water quickly and efficiently. The point of impact of the waves on the chest of the boat is central, as is usual with all cats.
The often-controversial unprotected aft helm positions of the high performance Catana models have been changed to two different options; bulkhead steering or on the flybridge. This change alone will attract many more cruisers who previously rejected Catana for this reason.
Bali 4.5 Interior
The Bali is well-thought-out as a cruising boat. It is clean, modern, functional and airy with easy to maintain surfaces. The “interactive” inside-outside living areas, all on one level, makes this 45ft catamaran feel huge. The owner’s version in the port hull has a big shower and separate head, desk, sofa, island bed and plenty of storage and hanging space. The storage, lighting and ventilation throughout the cabin are more than ample. The privacy door separates the owners cabin from the rest of the boat.
The charter version feels slightly tight down below in the hulls. The two cabins, two showers stalls and two separate toilets make it a tight fit but the beds are comfortable, semi walk around and the cabin has loads of storage. See the four different configurations . All wiring, plumbing and systems are easily accessible everywhere.
The galley work surface is possibly a little small but there is a lot of storage throughout galley and the salon. The oven and microwave are at eye level, which makes cooking much safer and easier while underway. The humongous “American style” fridge/freezer seemed like overkill, being used to tiny marine fridges. I thought this to be a little obnoxious at first but after spending some time on it, I appreciated the value of having the capacity of the fridge with built-in icemaker.
The pass-through windows to both cockpits make entertainment a breeze and while messing in the kitchen, the “chef” never feels cut off from the guests. It is an awesome arrangement and I believe that because of this, the foredeck will be used far more often as the dining area than the aft deck. The salon is big and even with 6 to 8 people standing around, it did not feel particularly cramped.
Bali 4.5 Exterior
The aft cockpit has a large dining table that can easily seat 6-8 people. The L-shaped bench-seat can seat 4 people with an additional 4 chairs. The bench seat is comfortable enough to serve as a watch-keepers bunk during a passage. Once the dinghy is lowered, the “gate” folds down to become a passerelle down to the water or to the dock, which extends the cockpit a further 2ft and gives it the “infiniti pool” look into the ocean.The forward deck has another large cockpit with two removable tables and large sun-loungers. When the sun awning is set up, this “marine terrace” provides a great friendly spot whether at anchor or underway. The overhang over the windows on the cabin top provides much needed shade and prevents rainwater from dripping into the saloon.
The flybridge, covered with a sun awning, is very comfortable with plenty of space for at least 4 people. It is easy to maneuver and sail the boat from this vantage point. All the lines lead back to the helm station and the instruments are easily reachable from the helm. My problem with the flybridge arrangement in this case, is that you have to leave the cockpit completely to get to the helm station. This is great for boat handling on charter, away from the rest of the party but not ideal for short-handed cruisers. In that case I would prefer the bulkhead steering position but this semi-raised helm station is small compared to the competition. The stairs going up to the helm from the cockpit, consists of just a small “step-ladder”, not ideal, in my opinion. You have to be fairly agile to get around to and from this cockpit arrangement.
Engines / Equipment
On the Bali 4.5, the 50hp Nanni diesel engine installation is well planned. The 50 hp motors are aft-facing which allows the sail drive to be forward of the rudder, unlike the other competitors who have the rudder forward of the propeller. Having the rudders right at the back of the hull results in superior handling and tracking characteristics. The high-output alternators and the high pressure pump for the 200 liter/hour watermaker are efficiently linked to the engine via belt drives and electric clutches. The pre-filters and control panel are accessible for easy maintenance and servicing. In addition, there are 400W of solar panels located on the bimini top.
The Bali 4.5 is fast under engine (8 knots at 2,100 rpm, 9.5 knots flat out). The engine noise level is negligible in the cabins (64Db) but is slightly louder in the saloon. This 4.5 is fitted with fixed blade propellers, but three-bladed folding props are an option, which would greatly reduce drag, yet maintain comparable performance under motor. The whole arrangement seems to be well balanced and the sail drives do not generate much vibration. The cable steering is very responsive.
The boat has two inverters:
- a 2KW unit dedicated to the large refrigerator.
- a 3KW unit that takes care of the rest of the boat’s energy requirements.
The Onan 9KW generator is located in the forward locker to port and has very good access for service and maintenance.

Sailing The Bali 4.5
We sailed the Bali 4.5 catamaran from Miami to Fort Lauderdale after the Miami Boat Show and put her through her paces to see if she lived up to the hype. We left through the main entrance to the harbor and as is normal, there were standing waves and all sorts of sloppy seas in the cut. We motored the Bali directly into the steep waves coming through the entrance and despite the foredeck slamming down as we went over each wave, no water ended up on the foredeck. We had left all the cushions out on the foredeck and they did not even get any sea spray on them. The cat has very high freeboard and exceptional bridgedeck clearance, which makes it a very dry boat. During the three hour trip in sloppy seas, we did not notice any excessive slamming on the bridgedeck.
Handling in this confused sea was remarkable. The Bali is light and we enjoyed how responsive she was both under sail and motor. She is easy to maneuver under motor in very tight spaces and easily turned on her own keel. Sail handling was a breeze, with the winches well placed. With the mast further aft, the self-tacking jib is bigger than the competitors and makes tacking a snap with a small crew. In light wind the Bali tacked and jibed without effort and was very responsive. On the trip up to Fort Lauderdale with around 20 knots of wind and quartering seas we saw 14 knots while surfing down a wave but was sitting at a steady 9-10 knots with 15-20 knots of wind for the duration of the trip. This catamaran feels safe and comfortable in all the living areas, including the foredeck and forward cockpit under sail in very confused seas.
The Bali is solidly built, performs well and is very comfortable as a cruising catamaran. All the concerns about a solid forward deck are unfounded and the clever “Open Space” concept with the saloon’s retractable door is a winner when at anchor. Undoubtedly, the Bali has some very “out of the box” ideas. These are very exciting innovations in the catamaran world and Catana is leading the way for performance cruisers.

Lagoon 42 vs bali 4.2: die modelle im vergleich für charter und kauf.
Katamarane sind ein schnell wachsendes Segment der Bootindustrie, da sie großartig für Charter, Wochenendausflüge und Blauwassersegeln sind. Sowohl für Paare als auch für Familien gelten Katamarane im Bereich von 40 bis 48 Fuß als ideale Größe und es gibt viele Modelle zur Auswahl. Zwei, die oft erscheinen, sind die Lagoon 42 und die Bali 4.2 , die beide über Navigare Yachting sowohl zum Chartern als auch zum Kauf mit Platzierung im Charterprogramm erhältlich sind. Schauen wir uns die Vorteile jeden Modells an.
Technische Daten
Ein kurzer Blick auf die Kenndaten zeigt sehr vergleichbare Modelle. Die Lagoon 42 wurde von VPLP entworfen und in Frankreich gebaut. Sie wurde 2017 zur European Yacht of the Year gekürt und erhielt später weitere US-Auszeichnungen. Sie hat eine Länge von 12,80 m, eine Breite von 7,70 m und einen Tiefgang von 1,25 m.
Bali 4.2 wurde von Olivier Poncin und Xavier Fay entworfen und wird ebenfalls in Frankreich gebaut. Die Länge über Alles beträgt 12,85 m, die Breite von 7,08 m und der Tiefgang 1,12 m. Die zusätzliche Breite der Lagoon könnte auf etwas mehr Platz an Deck und darunter hindeuten, aber es ist eher die Art und Weise, wie der Raum genutzt wird. Zum Beispiel bietet die Bali 79,2 m² Decksfläche, was etwa 10 % mehr ist als die der Konkurrenten, und das liegt daran, dass die Marke auf das Trampolin verzichtet hat und stattdessen eine Lounge und Sonnenliegen auf dem harten Vordeck bietet. Somit wird der nutzbare Außenbereich erweitert. Aber natürlich haben Katamarane aus einem bestimmten Grund Trampoline, und zwar sollen diese sie in den vorderen Abschnitten leicht halten, damit sie weniger in die Gegensee schlagen und besser segeln.
Die Leerverdrängungszahlen zeigen, dass die Lagoon mit 12,1 Tonnen etwas schwerer ist als Bali mit 11,5 Tonnen, und obwohl 0,6 Tonnen bei gewichtsempfindlichen Katamaranen einen Unterschied machen, kommt es darauf an, wie Sie ein Boot mit optionaler Ausrüstung, Kraftstoff und Wasser beladen. Dies wirkt sich dementsprechend auf die Leistung aus.
Auch die Segelfläche spielt eine große Rolle, wie gut ein Boot segelt. Die Lagoon hat eine Gesamtsegelfläche von 90 m² gegen den Wind, während die Bali 92 m² hat. Beide Modelle haben Optionen für einen Code 0 für großartiges Vorwindsegeln.
Beide Modelle bieten Standard- und verbesserte (leistungsstärkere) Motorpakete an, aber sie beginnen bei unterschiedlichen Stärken. Der Standard von Lagoon ist ein 45-PS-Yanmars, der auf 57 PS aufgerüstet werden kann. Balis Standard sind zwei 30-PS-Yanmars, die auf 45 PS aufgerüstet werden können. Dies macht einen Unterschied. Größere Motoren bringen sie besser durch die Gegensee und können genug Geschwindigkeit erzeugen, um einem entgegenkommenden Sturm auszuweichen. Andererseits verbrauchen sie sowohl unterwegs als auch beim Laden von Batterien mehr Kraftstoff.
Bezüglich der Standard-Tanklager unterscheiden sich die beiden Modelle erheblich. Bali bietet 860 Liter Frischwasser und 800 Liter Diesel, während die Lagoon 300 Liter Kraftstoff und 300 Liter Wasser transportiert. Für Charter und Segeltörns müssen Lagoon-Besitzer beides erhöhen, um komfortabler an Bord zu leben. Es ist eine Sache des Käufers oder Charterers zu fragen, wie das Boot ausgestattet ist. Navigare bietet einen zusätzlichen Wassertank auf der Lagoon 42 aus unserem Charterprogramm an.
An Deck gibt es deutliche Unterschiede. Wie oben erwähnt, ist das Vordeck-Layout auf der Bali einzigartig. Es gibt ein solides Vordeck mit Kissen, die eine riesige Sonnenliege für mindestens vier Personen bilden. Die 4.2 fügt an Deck einen zusätzlichen Kniff hinzu: mit einer L-förmigen Essecke an Backbord und einem geraden Sofa an Steuerbord kann eine Gruppe untergebracht werden.
Auf der Bali 4.2 gibt es eine Tür, die vom Innenraum direkt zum Vordeck führt, sodass sie nicht nach achtern gehen und auf den Seitendecks herumlaufen müssen, um das Vordeck zu erreichen. Das vordere Fenster lässt sich ebenfalls öffnen, sodass Speisen und Getränke aus der Pantry nach vorne gereicht werden können. Sowohl das Fenster als auch die Tür bringen im geöffneten Zustand viel frische Luft herein und können ein heißes Boot schnell abkühlen lassen. Das Anlegen und das Arbeiten mit der Ankerwinde ist auf der Bali einfacher, da das harte Vordeck einen festen Stand bietet.
Der vordere Gemeinschaftsbereich nimmt im Wesentlichen den Platz des Außencockpits ein, das sich achtern auf der Lagoon befindet. Es ist nur auf der anderen Seite des Bootes. Das ist großartig, wenn Sie der Hitze des hinteren Bootteils entfliehen möchten, während Sie vor Anker gehen und den Passatwinden zugewandt sind, aber es ist nicht der beste Ort bei gesetztem Segel.
Lagoon bietet vorne zwei traditionelle Netztrampoline. Dies hält das Gewicht niedrig(er) und macht es zu einem großartigen Ort zum Faulenzen und Beobachten der vorbeiziehenden Wellen. Auf dem kleinen harten Teil des Decks, der sich direkt vor dem Deckaufbau befindet, können Kissen hinzugefügt werden. Aber der Hauptwohnbereich im Freien ist das hintere Cockpit. Dort finden Sie an Steuerbord eine Essecke mit acht Sitzplätzen, eine einzelne Lounge an Backbord und einen Sitz am Heck direkt vor den Davits.
Flybridge und Steuerstand
Sowohl die Lagoon als auch die Bali bieten einen am Schott montierten Steuerstand. Lagoon hat ihn an Backbord und Bali an Steuerbord, aber die Unterschiede gehen weiter. Die Lagoon hat vom Cockpit aus Stufen zum Steuerrad und dann nur einen Schritt nach außen, um das Seitendeck zu erreichen. Auf der Bali müssen Sie drei Stufennach unten gehen, um die Seitendecks zu erreichen und weitere drei Stufen hinunter um achtern und die Seitendecks herum zum Hauptwohn-/Aufenthaltsbereich zu gelangen. Beim Andocken oder Ankern kann der Fahrer vom Steuer wegtreten, um der Crew auf der Lagoon leichter zu helfen, da der Steuerstand nicht so hoch ist. Beide Steuerstände bieten ungefähr die gleiche Sicht nach vorne, aber Sie müssen sich ducken, um die Heckbalken zu sehen, wenn Sie bei beiden Modellen rückwärts fahren.
Obwohl keines der Modelle als Flybridge-Version gilt, haben sowohl die Lagoon als auch die Bali Lounge-Bereiche auf dem Bimini. Die Lagoon hingegen hat eine doppelte Sonnenliege an Steuerbord und Stufen, die Sie vom Steuerstand dorthin führen. Obwohl sich oben weniger Personen aufhalten können, ist die Kommunikation zwischen dem Steuermann und den Personen im Cockpit auf der Lagoon einfacher und direkter, da der Fahrer einfach nicht so weit oben ist.
Innenraum & Unterbringung
Wir haben Balis vorderes Cockpit ausführlich beschrieben und ein Grund dafür ist, da es kein separates hinteres Cockpit gibt. Stattdessen verfügt Bali über eine kombinierte Innen-/Außen-Essecke, da sich das gesamte hintere Schott elektrisch wie ein Garagentor anhebt und einen kombinierten Salon-/Cockpitbereich bildet. Der Ansatz wurde entwickelt, um nur einen Raum zu haben, der jedoch eine doppelte Aufgabe erfüllt. Es war eine radikale Änderung zum traditionellen Katamaran-Design, aber es wurde von vielen angenommen.
Ein weiterer großer Unterschied findet sich in den Bordküchen. Lagoon hat Kühlschrankschubladen im Cockpit mit einem Frontlader-Kühlschrank im Salon. Die modifizierte U-förmige Pantry befindet sich an Steuerbord. Im Vergleich dazu verwendet die Bali einen bekannteren Kühlschrank in Haushaltsgröße und einen separaten Gefrierschrank darunter. Die Lagoon bietet ein einzelnes Waschbecken, während die Bali mit zwei ausgestattet ist. Beide verfügen über Drei-Flammen-Herde und haben auch einen Navigationstisch an Steuerbord, der auf der Bali ist jedoch etwas größer und kann Kapitänen zusagen, die mehr Raum für sich mögen.
Das Kabinen-Layout variiert ebenfalls. Sie können sich bei beiden Modellen für vier Kabinen und vier Nasszellen entscheiden. Bali bietet vier etwa gleich große Nasszellen, von denen keine eine separate Duschkabine hat. Die Lagoon bietet Nasszellen für die vorderen Kabinen und separate Duschkabinen für die hinteren Kabinen. Sollten Sie sich für die Eignerversion auf der Lagoon entscheiden, nimmt die Suite den gesamten Steuerbordrumpf mit einer luxuriösen Toilette im Bug ein. Welches Boot ist besser?
Die Marke Bali wurde für komfortables Cruisen mit Annehmlichkeiten wie in einem Haus und viel Wohnfläche entwickelt. Der 4.2 mit dem erweiterten Vordeckkonzept hält alle Versprechen der Marke. Die Lagoon 42, die die beliebte 420 ersetzte, wurde Änderungen unterzogen, um die Leistung zu verbessern. Das neu gestaltete „Gull-Wing“ Brückendeck bietet ein komfortables Segelerlebnis und der Mast wurde nach achtern bewegt, um das Nicken zu reduzieren. Der Baum wurde verkürzt, aber der Mast verlängert, damit mehr Segelfläche in der Höhe da ist.
Die Boote sind vergleichbar, aber unterschiedlich. Einige Leute mögen einfach die Ästhetik eines Modells mehr als die des anderen. Bali Catsmart 38
The Catsmart, launched in 2023, is the baby of the Bali range at 38 feet. Although this is the smallest yacht in the range, it still feels big thanks to Bali’s innovative design (tilting aft door, no bulkheads in the saloon) and with twin aft helms, they have maximised the living space up top on this entry-level boat.
Those aft helms and the low boom give the Catsmart a sportier look than her sisters.
With a length of 11.79 m and a width of 6.46 m, the Catsmart stays true to the Bali DNA with features such as the solid forward cockpit, the huge open saloon/aft cockpit area and the Bali tilting door.
These yachts are available in several layouts including an owner’s version with two cabins and two bathrooms (one in each hull), and a charter version with four guest cabins with an option for two extra bow cabins in the forepeaks, either for the skipper or additional guests.
Living Space
The Catsmart has a solid forward cockpit lounge area with sunbathing areas. Aft, a platform connects the two hulls with a long bench seat with storage lockers. The tilting door provides plenty of ventilation through the saloon and a large living and galley space for a 38-footer. The fridge is more comparable to the competition on this boat: 137 litres of storage space with a 103-litre freezer.
And there is a chart table and seat ergonomically integrated into the bench.

Thanks to a wider sail plan and a low, accessible boom, the Bali Catsmart is an easy-to-handle boat that is fun to sail. The two helm stations, aft on port and starboard, mean that manoeuvring in the marina is easy. Reverse into your dock and throw the lines yourself. You’ll be sailing upwind or downwind as close to the sea as possible.
She sails well, too. on a beam reach with 16 knots blowing in a calm sea, you’ll see speeds in the double figures. You can choose s sail plan with a self-tacking solent or an overlapping genoa if you would like more power up front. And there is an option for a bowsprit to fly a Code 0 or gennaker off the front of the boat.

Bali Catsmart
At Multihulls World, we’ve always worked hard to try and ensure that multihull builders don’t leave out the smaller models. While the market for small trimarans is well established, the market for sub-40-foot catamarans has recently been on the verge of extinction... For ten years now, the release of the occasional rare model hasn’t really been enough to reassure us. So, the Bali Catsmart is a strong signal that we obviously want to relay. We hope to see Lagoon release their 38-foot model – one might be on the cards.

What a ride it’s been since the founding of the Bali brand! Back in September 2014, the Bali 4.5 offered us a new way of living on the water by taking advantage, in terms of comfort, of everything that the catamaran formula could offer. A no-holds-barred approach that made the most conservative boaters cringe... but which has ultimately proven itself with over 1,000 examples built in an 8-year period, including 400 in the last 12 months alone! The range currently includes seven catamarans from 38 to 54 feet, making it one of the most complete ranges on the market and even the most extensive in the sector of sailing catamarans from 36 to 55 feet. The launch of the smallest model - officially presented at the International Multihull Show in La Grande-Motte - could have led to fears of them over-doing it in terms of comfort. The Catsmart is perhaps even the most Bali of the Balis, since the first model investigated for design was a catamaran under 40 feet before the 4.5 ultimately won the day.

Re: Bali Catamaran Owners. We have one Bali 4.1 from 2020 in our charter fleet. Finish is mediocre, not bad, spaces are gorgeous , ventilation is poor in all but particularly the aft cabins, helm station offers a good view and has a decent fly bridge for her size..
The foredeck on the Bali is not just a flimsy joint between the hull and deck sections, but is actually part of the bow structure and contributes to the stiffness of the boat, making it much stronger than conventional catamarans with two bows joined by a crossbeam and netting.
