Traveling to Cozumel from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum is super easy and straightforward. The Cozumel ferry connects mainland Mexico and Cozumel in under 30 minutes.

We’ve put together everything you need to know about taking the Cozumel ferry, including ferry times, purchasing tickets, and getting to the Cozumel ferry from Cancun & Tulum.

Where Is The Cozumel Ferry Pier?

There are two Cozumel ferry piers. The main passenger ferry pier from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel is located right on the beach in Playa del Carmen, right off 5th Ave (the main tourist walking street in Playa del Carmen).

If you take a private transfer or shuttle, it will most likely drop you by the Cozumel ferry ticket booth. The ADO bus stop is a 3-minute walk away.

There is a car ferry to Cozumel, located 15 minutes South of Playa del Carmen near Xcaret, operated by Transcaribe. If you are renting a car at the Cancun airport and want to bring it to Cozumel, so you don’t have to rent a car in Cozumel. This is an option.

The only reason to take the Transcaribe ferry to Cozumel is if you bring a rental car. Transcaribe doesn’t have passenger-only fares. Their prices are for a vehicle and passengers.

We think it’s just easier renting a car in Cozumel than bringing one over there. The extra time is not worth the money. We always rent  with this company but book online in advance for the best rats.

How To Get From Cancun to Cozumel Ferry

Private Transfer –   If you’ve just landed at the Cancun International Airport (CUN), booking a private transfer is best to take you directly to the Cozumel Ferry in Playa del Carmen. This can be booked in advance here .

This is the fastest and easiest way, the driver will be waiting for you, and you’ll go straight to the pier. Prices at the airport for private transfers are much higher. For the lowest price, book in advance online . If you’re traveling as a larger group, the price is even cheaper.

Shared Shuttle:  Shared airport shuttles from Cancun are only a good deal if you are a solo traveler. Check Prices . If you are traveling as a couple, it’s usually only a few dollars more or sometimes cheaper to take the private transfer. Then you go STRAIGHT to the pier and don’t wait for additional passengers or stop to drop people off along the way.

We have always found shuttles to be uncomfortable with too many people in one van.

ADO Bus: Another option is to take the ADO bus right from Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen Centro. The bus stop is a few minutes walk from the pier.

NOTE if you arrive before 8:30 am or after the last bus, you will have to wait or hire a private transfer. Bus to Playa del Carmen costs 190 pesos/ $10 USD.

Cozumel Ferry Companies

Two passenger Cozumel ferry companies operate from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel and the Calica port car ferry to Cozumel.

• Transcaribe (car ferry)

When deciding which ferry to take, it doesn’t really make a difference. We have always gone with the ferry that was leaving next and took the last ferry of the day from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen.

Both the ferry boats are similar in size and operate out of the same pier in Playa del Carmen.

How Much Does The Ferry Cost To Cozumel

Ferry prices vary based on the company. During high season, tickets do sell out, so you may have to wait sometimes for the next available ferry.

Winjet Cozumel Ferry Cost

Winjet has different ticket prices at the ticket booth at the pier and online. It is nice to prebook in USD since the Mexican pesos are always changing.

How Long Is The Ferry Ride From Playa del Carmen To Cozumel?

Ultramar’s new luxury ferry to Cozumel takes only 20 minutes in perfect weather conditions. The regular Ultramar and Winjet ferry takes about 45 minutes.

The car ferry takes around 75 minutes, but you need to get to the pier 90 minutes beforehand to load vehicles and then another 30+ minutes to unload vehicles. All this extra time makes the car ferry not really worth it, and it is easier to rent a car in Cozumel .

What are the ferry boats to Cozumel like?

The journey is quick, and most likely, you’ll want to be outside enjoying the weather and turquoise waters, so either boat is fine. But between the two companies, Ultramar is the more luxurious and fastest ferry to Cozumel.

Ultramar Ferry – This is a high-speed catamaran ferry that is 157 feet in length with three decks and carries up to 800 passengers. There is air-conditioned leather seating and open-air decks for those wanting to soak up the sun and views. Additional amenities for all ticket holders:

Parking Near The Cozumel Ferry Pier In Playa del Carmen

The closest parking lot to the ferry pier is called Estacionamiento. If you put that in Google, it will bring you there. Click here to launch on Google maps . Daily rates are 150 pesos.

Note you may need to leave your rental car keys depending on where in the lot you’re parked. Sometimes, they have to move cars around to get in and out.

Hi, do you need to book the car ferry in advance or can you just turn up. I tried booking on line but I won't have my hire car until early April so do not know the number plate or exact model! This is ifo they ask for when trying to book in advance.Thanks

You don't need to book months in advance. I would book it once you get your rental car in Mexico and know the info.

Thank you so much for all of this helpful info! We’re planning on visiting March 2020..renting a car in Cancun, spending time in Tulum, then finishing up in Cozumel. We will be renting a car...is it possible/would it make sense to leave the car in playa del Carmen during our stay on Cozumel and then rent a different car on the island? The car ferry seems like an expensive pain...but maybe renting two cars, while one sits in a parking lot would be even sillier(?).

Both options are an ok way to do it. If you have a larger group the car ferry might be cheaper. The time difference isn't all that different. The car ferry takes more time because you have to arrive earlier and it's slower, but then you don't have to spend the time in the rental office in Cozumel.

How to Travel From Cancun to Cozumel by Bus, Car, Ferry, and Plane

Located off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel is one of the most popular beach destinations in Mexico. The country's largest Caribbean island, Cozumel, offers excellent scuba diving and snorkeling, scenic beaches, Mayan ruins, and excellent shopping in the town of San Miguel.

If you’re in Cancun and planning a trip to see this side of Mexico, which is located 60 miles away, you'll find a few options that will take you between the two destinations. You can fly to Cozumel International Airport (CZM), which is an expensive but fairly quick trip. Alternatively, you can opt to travel by land (via a private vehicle or bus) to the Mexican city of Playa del Carmen - from there, you will have to travel by sea (via ferry) to Cozumel, 8.5 miles away.

To help you decide which mode of transit is the right one for you, we've broken down each option below.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Cancun to Cozumel?

The bus-to-ferry transfer is the cheapest option, although it does take the most time. The ADO bus company runs a direct service to Playa del Carmen from both CZM and a bus station in downtown Cancun (a five-minute walk from the ferry pier). For example, a one-way trip in a comfortable, air-conditioned bus costs starts at $13. Buses depart every half-hour or so between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. and more frequently during peak times. The bus ride takes roughly an hour and 10 minutes.

When arriving in Playa Del Carmen, you will either be dropped off at the bus station or a few blocks from the ferry pier, located on 5th Avenue. There are two companies that provide ferry service: Ultramar and WinJet. Departure times vary seasonally, but there are generally departures every half-hour between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (and less frequently later in the evening). The last ferry departs around 11 p.m. 

Tickets for the ferry cost $25 per adult and $15 per child, which can be purchased just before departure. The ferries leave very close to schedule. It’s usually a smooth, 45-minute ride, but if there’s inclement weather, the trip can be rough and take a little longer. 

Before choosing this mode of transit, note that when you factor in traffic, getting to—and waiting for—the ferry, this option may take 2.5 hours or more.

How Long Does It Take to Drive to Playa del Carmen?

For those who want to speed up the journey, a private vehicle can get you from Cancun to Playa del Carmen in about 45 minutes. From there, you can take the ferry to Cozumel. In total, this option will take you roughly one and a half hours.

There are several companies in Cancun that offer private transfers to Playa del Carmen. It’s a good idea to arrange the service in advance, however (if you don’t, you can get a taxi, as Uber does not operate in Cancun). The cost for a private transfer depends on the number of people in your group, but it starts at around $50 for two.

While hiring a private vehicle is more expensive and traffic may slow you down, if you are traveling in a group, this may be the most economical choice. Plus, this option is quicker and more convenient than the bus.

Can I Catch a Ferry or Boat Directly to Cozumel from Cancun?

There is no ferry service that runs directly between Cancun and Cozumel. Ferries in Cancun run to Isla Mujeres only. You could hire a private boat, but it would likely take longer and be quite expensive. If you want to make a day of it, though, you can charter a yacht and ask them to drop you off in Cozumel when you're done.

Can I Take My Car on the Ferry to Cozumel?

If you rented a car while in Cancun, be aware that the regular ferry that runs between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel does not transport vehicles. However, if you would like to take your car onboard a ferry, you will have to drive further south to Puerto de Punta Venado - Calica, an approximately 15-minute drive. Use the Transcaribe ferry service , which is 500 pesos (about $25) for a family vehicle. 

How Long Is the Flight?

The flight duration is about 20 minutes, but that does not include time spent getting to and from the airport, checking bags, or clearing security—so it may not be that much less time than the other methods of transportation. One-way trips start at around $60.

The regional airline MAYAir offers three flights a day on this route, and tickets to Cozumel must be booked separately through their website. If you are planning to depart to Cozumel directly after you land in Cancun, be sure to leave enough time between flights. If your previous flight is delayed, you will be charged to change your reservation.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

While Cozumel's public bus system does not serve CZM, you can pick up a shuttle bus at the airport. To purchase your ticket, exit customs and head to the shuttle ticket window is the last booth on your right.

Many hotels offer pick-up service, so check with your hotel about pre-arranged transportation before you arrive.

What Is There to Do in Cozumel?

Cozumel is the country's premiere diving destination . Sections of the Mesoamerican Reef —the world's second-largest barrier reef—can be found just off the coast of Quintana Roo and houses some 262 species of fish and 105 species of coral. Consider planning a trip to the 29,600-acre Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel (Cozumel Reefs National Park)—which protects the reefs on the southern part of the snorkel and welcomes scuba divers and snorkelers to discover hawksbill sea turtles, splendid toadfish, black coral, and more.

If you'd prefer to relax, the 34-mile-long island offers plenty of beaches to enjoy, including Playa Palancar, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, and the family-friendly Playa Mia Grand Beach Park. Frequently Asked Questions

There is no direct ferry between Cancun and Cozumel. You can, however, take a bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, which will get you to the city in just over an hour - from there, it's a 45-minute ferry ride to Cozumel.

If you're flying to Cozumel, you'll arrive at Cozumel International Airport, which is just a five-minute drive to the town of San Miguel.

For our cruise ship passengers, Cozumel is the next stop after Mahahual, the Costa Maya. You can rent a catamaran charter boat in Cozumel with us and go explore the Island. We offer private snorkeling tours and public day sailing charter in Cozumel. Catamaran rentals start at $1800 USD for 4 hours of luxury sailing in Cozumel. 

We depart out of the Marina Fonator which is located about 10  to 15 min south of the cruise stop locations. 

FROM PLAYA DEL CARMEN VIA FERRY TO THE ISLAND

 From Playa Del Carmen you must take the 8:00 am ferry to Cozumel. They leave on the hour. The fare varies but it is about $400 pesos mxn round trip. You can find ferry information: ULTRAMAR  . At arrival you will take a taxi to the meet up point of the boat you choose. 

We provide directions and all arrival information with your  sailing confirmation data.

 We have two wonderful Lagoon 39ft boats free for rental. The Sophia and the Lida. 

They are both perfect for groups of up to 20 people. The service aboard is exceptional.

Hay muchas clases de ceviche, una receta de pescado crudo como el del sushi, marinado en jugo de cítricos. Sin embargo, siempre puedes optar por un ceviche clásico, elaborado con un pescado blanco, por lo general tilapia, jugo de limón, tomates, cebolla y cilantro. O bien, puedes pedir uno que tenga una carne más exótica, como el ceviche de pulpo.

CHILE RELLENO

Los chefs mejicanos son expertos en llevar la cocina a otro nivel, y esto es exactamente lo que hacen con el chile relleno. Hay muchas versiones de este plato, pero todas tienen como base un chile poblano relleno con carne condimentada y queso. Una variante popular incluye carne picada de cerdo, pasas y nueces.

Columbia reef & el cielo.

Your adventure starts heading out to the spectacular Columbia Reef for a guided snorkelling activity to take in the amazing corals and tropical fish that Cozumel is known for.

After, you’ll visit El Cielo (“Heaven”), which provides sanctuary for hundreds of brightly coloured starfish. Due to it’s unique location, the water is shallow (~8ft or 2m) and nearly always crystal clear.

This is also nearby to El Cielito…

The not-so-little brother of El Cielo, with equally stunning blues, white sand beach, and water shallow enough to stand.

The fun doesn’t end here; you’ll then head to the Playa Mia Grand Beach park – enjoying a variety of refreshing drinks and cocktails from the open bar along the way…

All aboard...

The AquaDream catamaran is fully equipped with safety features, powerful well-maintained engines, and staffed by experienced crew. We depart from the Cozumel Ferry Terminal (Muelle Fiscal) at 11AM each morning. We recommend you arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time to get checked-in and comfortably on board.

Please don’t bring your own food, or any glass containers. Only certified coral-safe sunscreen is allowed; please help us to conserve the delicate reef ecosystem.
