The global authority in superyachting
The Famous Project has announced their plans to circumnavigate the globe with an all-female team in collaboration with Swiss watch company Richard Mille. The ultimate objective is to beat the current world speed record for the Jules Verne Trophy, with the 10-person crew sailing on "the fastest maxi-trimaran in the world".
The 31.5-metre IDEC Sport is the same vessel that Francis Joyon skippered when he achieved the current record at 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds.
"This was my dream boat for this ambitious project which, outside of the sporting aspect, intends to give women the same tools as men to win such demanding races," said French sailor and founder Alexia Barrier. "The Famous Project is therefore a societal project that perfectly sums up our mantras: dare, dream, share."
Alexia Barrier is a skipper with more than 20 years of experience and 200,000 nautical miles travelled. This includes 18 transatlantic voyages, five of which were undertaken alone and a finish in the 2020-21 Vendée Globe.
Brand and partnerships director Amanda Mille added: "Richard Mille is taking a new step in its extraordinary commitments to adventure, combining excellence, technology and performance – the three cornerstones of the brand. The Famous Project is letting us write a new page in our history of commitments to women. Alexia Barrier’s clear desire to outdo herself regardless of the game truly won us over."
The first Jules Verne Trophy was awarded to the first yacht which sailed around the world in less than 80 days, with the award's name a reference to the Jules Verne novel Around the World in Eighty Days .
Competing boats must be propelled solely by the wind and the crew, though the trophy is open to any type of boat and any number of crew.
There have been 19 recorded attempts with nine teams having successfully broken the preceding record.

This is the second model under the ownership of Polish company Delphia Yachts and is fast, comfortable and elegant
A return to the Maxi Yachts of old with this fast and comfortable cruiser
Maxi has produced over 16,000 yachts but, as with many Scandinavian yards, the high cost of hand-made quality has led to tricky times over the past decade. The Polish company Delphia Yachts now owns Maxi, after it had a brief stewardship under Najad. The intention is to stay true to its quality heritage and Swedish Olympic sailor Pelle Petterson remains involved in the design.
The Maxi 1200 is the second model under Delphia’s ownership, following the 1300 a year ago, and resembles the Maxi yachts we remember, a design that melds the worlds of racer-cruiser and family cruiser.
She promises to be simple, fast and ergonomic, as well as safe, durable and, thanks to her Polish production, affordable. “The Maxi 1200 is meant to be very fast and very comfortable, pretty elegant and easy to handle,” says Petterson.
Attention is paid to strength and stiffness, with carbon reinforcements used around the grid that takes keel, rig and chainplate loads, plus the rudder frame and the stem and bowsprit. Hull and deck have a PVC core and are laminated in vinylester resin.
An aim of Petterson’s was to keep the cockpit tidy, so there is halyard stowage in the coamings and sheet tail stowage below the cockpit table. I like the siting of the primaries inboard and the use of a central mainsheet pedestal with a single reversible winch. “I assure you that this [mainsheet] solution works really well,” says Petterson, “I’ve checked it on my own boat.”
Tony Castro created a simple, elegant interior design, finished with white panels contrasting with teak trim and solid wood frames. It is the first time anyone other than Petterson has designed a Maxi interior, and it is offered with a two or three-cabin layout.

39 years ago the International Maxi Association was started as a small gathering of maxi yacht owners wishing to bring more co-ordination to their sailing. Since then it has grown both in the size of its membership and its remit, to become an organization with much wider influence and endorsed by World Sailing to organize World Championships and to manage maxi racing globally. The IMA’s overall aim is to encourage greater participation in maxi racing around the world. To this end, the Association has become increasingly involved in all the regattas with significant maxi participation. Another of the IMA’s major responsibilities is to encourage the highest standards of race management, safety and measurement for both inshore and offshore maxi yacht events. For maxi regattas the IMA assists with the standardization of entry and the writing of notice of races and sailing instructions. The Association can also assist with race management and support and endorse events that are held to its high standards. For 2021 as well as all our usual events and our Mediterranean Maxi Inshore and Offshore Championships, we are adding a new regatta run by the Yacht Club Italiano as a season opener in Portofino at the end of April. We are also supporting the famous Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii and the Aegean 600. Our flagship event, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, we trust will be able to proceed this September in Porto Cervo in near normal conditions. Here and at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez we will be joined by the J Class, a class formally affiliated with the IMA, as we await news of their next World Championship. The IMA’s membership remains healthy – a trend we hope will continue. We need maxi owners to support us so that we can support them! We remain extremely grateful for the generous long term and loyal support from our main sponsor Rolex and are pleased to welcome Credit Suisse as a further sponsor. We also thank the marine clothing company Code 0 for kitting out the IMA team in smart new gear. As usual I thank my hard-working and dedicated staff. Throughout the pandemic we have met weekly on Zoom but are greatly looking forward to seeing each other in person, as well as all maxi owner and sailors in the forthcoming season. We wish you an excellent season ahead.
