Adult sailing is back for 2023!

Published 15:03 on 12 mar 2023.

RVYC's very popular adult sailing sessions are back, with Wednesday on- and off-the-water sessions from 26 April to 26 July. If there are any members who'd like to get out on the water in a variety of boats, from dinghies to Squibs and cruisers, this could be just the thing for you. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refresh your skills, adult sailing sessions are very informal we don't follow an RYA course syllabus for the sessions. It is all about having fun, gaining skills and knowledge and meeting new people too.

Details are on the poster and you can download a registration form too. There is a charge of £45 (plus £10 hire charge if you're using a club boat).

If you have friends who'd like to get out on the water, then do bring them along to the registration evening on Wednesday 5 April from 6.30pm . You do have to be members to take part but, as you know, joining our club is very easy!

Helpers are always welcome if you can instruct, take our learners out on your boat, or drive or crew a RIB, have any First Aid experience, or can help onshore, then please let Peter know. There's an instructors and helpers evening on Tuesday 14 March from 6.30pm.

Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s Sea of Lights Parade, Dec 7

From Andrew McBride,Sea of Lights Coordinator, Royal Victoria Yacht Club :

The Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s annual SEA OF LIGHTS parade will set sail on Friday December 7, 2018, at 6:45pm . This parade of lighted boats has been held annually since 2006 when it helped celebrate Oak Bay’s Centennial. In partnership with the Districts of Oak Bay and Saanich, the Victoria and Oak Bay Sea Rescue Societies and the Maritime Forces Pacific it contributes greatly to civic pride and enjoyment of the holiday season and supports the Salvation Army Christmas Fund, and the Oak Bay Kiwanis.

The parade is led by a Canadian Navy training ship , and usually brings out up to twenty brightly-decorated boats. The event is expected to again attract several thousand spectators to Gyro Park beach and Willows Beach, where judging of the best-lit boats takes place. Also, many waterfront residents in Cadboro and Oak Bays use this colourful event as the ‘kick-off’ to their Christmas social calendar.

The event offers great family fun starting with the fleet leaving RVYC in Cadboro Bay at 6:45pm and passing Cattle Point at approximately 7:00 pm. Spectacular viewing will be at Willows Beach at 7:15 pm where the Kiwanis serve hot chocolate by donation at the Willows Beach pavilion. A roaring beach bonfire run by the Oak Bay Fire Department is sure to keep everybody warm. At approximately 7:45 pm the fleet parades past Cadboro Bay’s Gyro Park beach , where hot Chocolate and coffee donated by Cadboro Bay merchants will be served by the 12 th Garry Oaks Sea Scouts. Last year’s parade raised a bumper hamper of food and other donations for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Hamper Fund and to the Oak Bay Kiwanis .

Admission to this spectacular beach event is free , but the public are encouraged to bring along a non-perishable food item or other donation to the Kiwanis or the Salvation Army .

The Club acknowledges the generous support of the local merchants and area marine suppliers for providing prizes to be awarded to the lighted boats . Rescue crews from local units of the Coast Guard Auxiliary help to ensure safety on the water by marking and patrolling the route.

The Royal Victoria Yacht Club welcomes all boaters to this event. Registration is free and full details can be found online at: www.rvyc.bc.ca

Swiftsure sails into its 78th year this weekend

Start of the Swiftsure International Yacht Race at Clover Point on May 28, 2022. DARREN STONE, TIMES COLONIST

Spectators will be lining Dallas Road Saturday morning for the 78th Swiftsure Lightship Classic race, hoping to see brightly coloured spinnakers filled out by a brisk westerly wind sending boats on their way.

Every year — except 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic — locals and visitors flock to Clover Point, the official starting location, and line up along Dallas Road for five races, beginning with the Lightship Classic at 9 a.m. Saturday. Other races follow in 10-minute increments.

Race chair Randy Diamond said organizers are hoping for clear weather with a 15 to 20 knot wind coming from the west.

Last year, spectators huddled along the waterfront under cloudy skies and a light drizzle.

Officials will do a live broadcast from a tent set up at Clover Point.

Out-of-town boats are expected to begin arriving at the Inner Harbour Causeway docks early this afternoon and through Friday.

So far close to 115 boats have registered for the five races, of which about 70 per cent are from the U.S. More are expected to enter the race. “People love coming to Victoria’s Inner Harbour,” Diamond said, adding Swiftsure boats setting off create a “very pretty race at the start.”

While the Swiftsure remains popular with boaters, entry numbers have not yet regained pre-pandemic levels.

Last year’s races attracted 120 boats, below the 2019 figure of 140, Diamond said.

The Swiftsure Lightship Classic, named for a lightship — an aid to navigation serving as a kind of lighthouse — is the longest race. Boats in the race sail around the “lightship” before returning to Victoria.

These days, racing yachts go around a virtual mark, but the real Swiftsure lightship was stationed at Swiftsure Bank, near the entrance of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, west of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Today, it’s being restored at the Northwest Seaport Maritime Heritage Centre in Seattle.

Tents will be set up on the lower causeway for the Swiftsure Centre, where the public can ask questions of event ambassadors. Close to 200 volunteers pitch in to make the event happen.

Volunteers are buffing up trophies to prepare for the award ceremony, held the night prior to the race — awards are handed out one year after the event — at the Strathcona Hotel, Diamond said.

While the Lightship Classic is the longest race, the Cape Flattery race is the most popular. That’s because waters are calmer in the Cape Flattery race than in the Lightship race, where boats can face open ocean swells.

Boats from the Juan de Fuca race start returning about 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Sunday morning. That day will be filled with boats returning from their various races, Diamond said.

The finish point is Ogden Point breakwater. Boats then go into the harbour for a check by safety inspectors.

Jeff Bray, chief executive of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, said visitors stay in hotels downtown and go to restaurants and shop, while locals are also attracted to the city centre. “It has a great impact.”

Keith Wells, executive director of the Greater Victoria Sport Tourism Commission, called Swiftsure a premiere yachting event on North America’s west coast. “It has the attention of yachtsmen up and down the coast.”

Even so, the tourism commission, a sponsor, is trying to attract more international sailors and raise more awareness, he said. This is a marquee event for the city and it makes sense to build it back up, he said.

Swiftsure basics

• Race boats will arrive at the Inner Harbour Causeway docks on Thursday and Friday.

• Central Saanich Lions Club serves breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at Clover Point.

Burrard Yacht Club Festival of Lights 2023

Vancouver’s North Shore will once again be alight with a dazzling parade full of festive light displays. The popular North Vancouver Festival of Lights Boat Parade returns to continue its 30+ year tradition of warming hearts.

Nearly two dozen boats will strut their stuff on December 2, decked out with wreaths, LEDS, inflatable decorations, Santa Clauses, and snowmen.

And there are many recommended spots to see the shining holiday boats in action. Favourite locations includes the shore at Waterfront Park, the pier at the Shipyards, or a waterfront restaurant.

The parade is ran by a community of wonderful volunteers at the Burrard Yacht Club. Many of the shimmering boats on display will be from the very same club, along with some others from the local community.

The event looks to give back to the community. They have previously raised money for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. This year’s charity is yet to be confirmed.

Event Details

When: Saturday, December 2 at 6pm.

Where: The route starts at the Burrard Yacht Club before moving through the Shipyards in North Vancouver. The next destination is Coal Harbour, before circling back towards the Burrard club to complete the loop.

Cost: It is free to view the event

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

royal victoria yacht club sea of lights 2023

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

royal victoria yacht club sea of lights 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

royal victoria yacht club sea of lights 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

royal victoria yacht club sea of lights 2023

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
