Central Park Sailboat Pond

An outstanding water feature, and one of the main attractions in Central Park.

What makes it Great?

Why it doesn't work.

The draw of the Sailboat Pond is more than just the chance to get your feet wet; it is the combination of elements that attract people and bring the place to life. The place is a huge attraction for families, school children, strollers, street performers, tourists, and birders looking for the resident red-tailed hawks. Kids climb the Alice in Wonderland statue and enjoy ice cream on sunny summer days, while adults relax by the cafe and take in the scene. The diversity of users makes this one of the most sociable places in New York.

Access & Linkages

The Sailboat Pond can be accessed from all sides. To this day I still get excited as I walk down one of the many paths leading towards it, always speeding up as I get closer. The Pond has vital linkages to other parts of Central Park, such as the nearby zoo, as well as to the museums, shops, and cafes on 5th Avenue and Madison. A visitor at the Pond also has an important physical access to the center point of the space _ the water. One can walk around the water, touch the water, and watch other people enjoy the water.

Comfort & Image

Water also gives the space a sense of comfort and serenity _ a calm oasis in the middle of the city. Adding to the place's sense of comfort are the numerous options for rest and relaxation -- benches facing the water, a sitting wall along the water, moveable seating around the caf_, and areas to find shade and sun.

Uses & Activities

The caf_ and food carts, the model sailboat rentals, the street performers, the statue climbing, and the people-watching all support the sociability and image of the place.

Sociability

The multitude of uses and activities draws not just model sailboat aficionados, but families, school children, snackers, strollers, street performers, tourists, New Yorkers, and birders looking for the resident red-tailed hawks. This diversity of people only makes the space better and leads to the enormous everyday sociability of the place.

You can finally float a miniature boat in Central Park again!

The beloved tradition went on hiatus back in 2019.

Ian Kumamoto

If it seems like forever ago since you last noticed miniature boats floating over Central Park's Conservatory Water pond, that's because the tiny crafts have not graced the body of water in five years.

But now, for the first time after the pandemic, New Yorkers can once again sail the iconic remote-controlled vessels at the park: model boat sailing is officially back!

RECOMMEDNED: NYC pools and beaches may soon stay open well into fall

Rocking the Boat, a non-profit based in the Bronx that teaches teenagers how to build life-size boats for sailing on Long Island Sound, is behind the relaunch of the beloved activity, reports the New York Times .

According to Central Park's own  website , model boating is a tradition that is just as central to the character of the city as the park itself, with towns across the world also partaking in the pastime, including at Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris.

A word on Conservatory Water, the pond where the boats float in: first made famous by E.B. White in his beloved 1945 children's novel  Stuart Little , which was adapted to a movie in 1999, the area is named after a large greenhouse of glass and metal that the city had planned to build but never finished. Originally, the pond was meant to reflect the greenhouse. Now, the body of water is known for turning into an ice skating rink during the winter, when the water freezes all the way through, and for its model boat racing, which attracts children from all over the city, during warmer months.

You can rent the model boats, which are built by members of Rocking the Boat, for $15 for a 30-minute session. If you decide to bring your own miniature boat, you'll need to secure a $15 permit from the city's parks department.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

"No price can be put on those dreams and aspersions of the mind, when she touches the water and with a little shove, those sails fill, and she heels over to track across the pond. From my first Birkenhead Star Yacht  “Southern Star,” the feeling was just the same as when I launched my newly restored classic yacht “Moon Song”. The only difference other than having to run around the pond to catch it, was that I was now fully part of that journey, that first push, that seed planted in my mind that had brought me to this point. So when you see an old pond yacht, don’t see it as a dated toy yacht or an artistic novelty! It is a carriage from which dreams are born!"

New Pond Sailboats Closer to Originals By Mark Chervenka

New pond sailboats closer to originals.

Pond sailboats, also called pond yachts, exploded in price in the mid-1990s. In autumn of 2001, an example brought $4,050 at auction, believed to have been a world record.

The number of reproductions has risen as prices of originals has climbed. Quality of new sailboats has also greatly increased and made detection of the reproduction ships more difficult.

In 1996, for example, when ACRN (Antiques Collectibles Repro Newsletter) first reported on these craft, reproductions were strictly for shelf display. They were built strictly as "antiques" and never meant to be placed in water. Hulls were not waterproof and there were no seals around masts, rudders and hatch covers. Yards, arms and spars–names for the horizontal parts of masts–were usually glued in place and not movable. Ship rigging, the system of ropes used to trim or adjust sails, was not functional.

Another important clue to detecting the earlier mid-1990s reproductions is the lack of a weighted, or ballasted, keel. A keel is the flat sided vertical panel or bulge on the bottom of the hull which extends from the hull down into the water. Keels help keep sail boats from tipping over by counterbalancing the push of air against the sails. Since they were shelf pieces never meant to sail, most reproductions of the mid-1990s, do not have weighted keels. Many new ships of this time also had permanently attached bases and stands which is another clue they were never intended to be placed into the water.

The latest pond sailboat reproductions are fully functional sailboats. They include weighted keels, fully adjustable sails and all necessary rigging to trim and adjust sails. They are available in various sizes starting around $100. A much closer inspection is required to catch this latest generation of copies.

First, here are some features that generally have nothing to do with age and are NOT reliable tests of age.

1) Number and types of sails. Both new and old ships have various styles, shapes and numbers of sails. Just keep in mind that sails must be able to be adjusted to be used on a working sailboat.

2) Size. New and old are found in various sizes from around 20″ long up to 60″ long. The original ship shown in Fig. 2 is exceptionally large and not a typical size.

3) Tool marks and other signs of handwork. Both new and old are made by hand, usually with hand made or at least hand fitted parts. Tool marks left by knife blades or fine saw marks are commonly found on both new and old. New ships are generally made in China, India or the Philippines.

What should you look at to determine age? Generally, virtually all original ships have at least some brass fittings. These should show a natural darkened patina. Although new brass can be artificially darkened, natural patina is difficult to imitate.

Look for normal wear. If a ship has actually been sailed, look for wear patterns around moving parts. Virtually all working sails, for example are attached to masts with brass rings. The insides of rings, continually rubbing against the wood masts, should be brighter than the outside of the ring. This is true even for ships that may not have been sailed for many years.

If you are unsure in your ability to detect wear, consider using a long wave ultraviolet light. New synthetic threads and strings virtually always fluoresce under black light. Look for new thread in the stitching of hems, or edges, of sails. Look for new string in the rigging used to trim sails.

Many modern synthetic glues and sealants, such as silicone, also fluoresce. Glues used before about 1940, such as hide glues, are generally based on organic proteins. The vintage natural glues rarely fluoresce. Some modern varnishes and paints also fluoresce.

Of course, these are general rules regarding ultraviolet. There is always the possibility that new strings and glues have been used to repair or restore a genuinely old sailboat.

This year, our team thoughtfully constructed a program that would recreate in the virtual world the community that makes being on the pier so special. Our top priority was to support our kids emotionally and help them address the feelings of isolation, anxiety, and stress that many were experiencing. Our strategy:

  • Daily check-ins with staff
  • 2 social workers on staff and running programs
  • Social-Emotional Learning lessons, or what students lovingly called “Feelings Classes,” for Swim Sail Science
  • Community-building lessons for all students
  • Lots of downtime for games, icebreakers, chatting, and general silliness

“I think every year with kids at Courageous you see relationships form. I think whether online or in person, I still had those relationships form with students and coworkers… One thing Courageous does well is unity. I have always found myself making new friends, connecting with old ones, and becoming friends with my instructor. Courageous to me is one big family and I think everyone is always there to support you.” —Jean, Swim Sail Science instructor and former Courageous kid

After our kids’ tough spring of remote learning in school, we knew that it would be critical to make the online Courageous Sailing experience hands-on and interesting, especially because many of our students—especially those already disproportionately affected by the upheaval of the pandemic—had lost so much ground academically. We needed to make learning fun!  Our strategy:

  • Virtual sailboat races on Virtual Regatta, where students could practice their sailing skills on a surprisingly realistic simulator
  • Weekly guest speakers including a member of the US Coast Guard, a Paralympic Sailing silver medalist, a marine biologist, the Commander of the USS Constitution, and a round-the-world racer
  • Engineering challenges and science experiments — attempts to create lava lamps were especially memorable!
  • Explorations of marine biology, including a vicarious scuba dive under the Charlestown docks
  • Student-led lessons on topics ranging from buoyancy to knot-tying
  • Swim Sail Science Academics:
  • Teachers created opportunities for kids to build reading and math skills and engage thoughtfully with the environmental science theme. For example, in math, students practiced fractions while learning about the types of trash that end up in landfills unless we make more sustainable choices.
  • Science classes included testing water quality, building wind turbines, and designing ways to reduce plastic waste.
  • As part of our sustainability focus, ten families adopted worm composting bins.

“I was SO impressed at the job your team did. On the first day I walked by my Step 5 (somewhat sullen, quarantined) teenager hearing him laughing and happily engaging with his group. Then hearing what they were doing everyday was so amazing. Highlights I heard about (or watched): the sailing regatta app (so cool!); The underwater view of the sea under the dock; the interview with the Commander of the Constitution (that was really amazing)! I commented to my husband that the Courageous Team should be coaching the schools on how to run Zoom meetings.” —Kristin, Courageous parent

Youth are living in a world that can feel frightening, hostile, and unjust—a place where it’s difficult to feel safe, set worry aside, and just be a kid. Whether on Zoom or on the water, Courageous made sure that our students had plenty of opportunities for fun. Our strategy:

  • Lots of free time to relax and hang out with peers and instructors
  • Loads of game-based learning — including those virtual sailing races that spurred lots of good-natured competitiveness
  • Swim Sail Science Olympics, including knot tying and a trivia quiz about instructors and team leaders
  • Debates about the merits of different video games and movies
  • Virtual dance parties
  • Instructors vying to give the most professional weather report — and being comically unsuccessful
  • Worm races (10 Swim Sail Science families adopted worm compost bins, and clearly a race was inevitable!)
  • GOING SAILING! Our older students and Instructors-In-Training had a blast out on the water!

“I could have fun at home as much as outside.” —Ryhan, Courageous student “My favorite memory from Courageous is hanging out with instructors and friends and having fun with them!” —Zhencong, Courageous student

Courageous is committed to providing equitable access to high-quality learning programs for kids of all walks of life, regardless of financial means. Sailing has traditionally been a sport of the rich and the white, and that needs to change! We are proactive in our efforts to reach out to and include young people who might not otherwise get involved. Course fees are determined by financial need, and our Swim Sail Science academic summer program and new school-day programs are completely free for participants. To eliminate potential barriers to participation, Courageous provides Swim Sail Science students and alumni with school bus transportation throughout Boston, meals, and ongoing swimming lessons. In 2021, over half  of our intermediate-level sailors started their Courageous journey with Swim Sail Science!

Access to learning opportunities has never been more important. The academic disruption of the pandemic has impacted all students, but it has been worse for youth of color, who may have “lost” the cumulative equivalent of 6-12 months of learning. Summer learning programs like ours are critical to getting kids’ education back on track. Our free, five-week Swim Sail Science program, offered in partnership with Boston Public Schools, engages elementary students at risk of learning loss. Each summer, sixty kids reinforce reading, writing, and math basics and build high-level critical thinking skills through a hands-on, environmental science-based academic curriculum. Data confirm that year after year, Swim Sail Science students make impressive academic gains and become more confident, engaged learners.  But learning doesn’t stop with Swim Sail Science! After a school year in which many students felt left behind or uninspired, Courageous sailors at all levels were excited to jump into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities. Students waited breathlessly on the dock to see and learn about the animals our two marine biology instructors brought up from their dives. Kids learned about buoyancy, design, and how sailboats work by creating and testing “trash boats,” kites, and marine debris skimmers. From testing water quality to bouncing between squeamishness and curiosity while watching an up-close fish dissection, Courageous kids got caught up in the fun of learning, and they’re ready for more.

<< Return to Previous Page   ............  Help Courageous Turn Learning Loss Around >>

sailboat in a pond

Supporting students as they recover emotionally and academically isn’t something that schools can do alone, and we are thrilled that two Boston Public schools have turned to Courageous to partner with them. In the fall of 2021, we  achieved a long-awaited goal: expanding our school-year programming so that we can be there for kids all year round during the school day, and can serve even more young people. Our school-day program combines STEM, social-emotional learning, and sailing, serving approximately 260 kids in two under-resourced schools. During weekly lessons with Courageous educators, 3rd and 4th graders are exploring ecosystems, climate, and marine biology, while 5th and 6th graders are building their understanding of aerodynamics, buoyancy, weather, engineering, and more through a series of hands-on challenges. Teachers and students alike have let us know how engaging and effective our lessons are.    This pilot program is so important that we are providing it at no cost to the participating schools and families, and we are asking for your help. We know that the Courageous approach works in a way that goes beyond summer, and we hope you will support this next step!

Stuart Little

by E.B. White

Stuart little the sailboat pond in central park.

Stuart Little delights in watching the sailboat races at the model sailboat pond, otherwise known as the Conservatory Water, and as the scene is a key one in the novel, readers may find it interesting to explore in greater detail.

The Water is one of the most famous spots in Central Park, situated just north of the entrance to the park at 72nd street on the east side. It is neighbors with the Alice in Wonderland statue and the Hans Christian Anderson statue. The area is also known as a prominent site for watching red-tailed hawks.

The Water was not part of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s “Greensward Plan,” and was, as the official website for Central Park states, “initially intended to be a small pool for a glass house and a formal, ornamental flower garden.” But “when the upkeep of this plan proved itself too costly, Conservatory Water and Conservatory Garden were created in their place.” The pond was designed with a granite shoreline to resemble the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris.

During the winter months it is used for ice skating, but the sailing races are what it is best known for. Most of the time visitors can rent model sailboats and yachts at Kerbs Boathouse nearby. Both adults and children delight in this activity, and Stuart Little accurately depicts the shared excitement and competitive spirit. Races are held Saturdays mornings at ten, sponsored by the Central Park Model Yacht Club.

Swimmer dead after going missing during live music event at Lakeville pond

A man is dead after he was pulled from a pond where a live music event was underway in Lakeville, Massachusetts, on Saturday.

Lakeville police say they responded to Long Pond around 4:58 p.m. after receiving a request from Massachusetts Environmental Police for their dive team and police boat to assist in the search for a man in his 60s who reportedly went missing while swimming in the pond earlier.

The man was located at 5:43 p.m., police said, and life-saving measures were attempted, however he was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after arrival.

Environmental police were already on Long Pond when the man was reported missing, according to police.

NBC10 Boston affiliate WJAR reports that Pond-a-Palooza was happening at the time, with tons of boats and people in the water.

It wasn't immediately clear who reported the man missing, or what his cause of death was. His name has not been released.

All unattended deaths in Plymouth County are investigated by state police detectives assigned to the district attorney's office, police added.

An investigation is ongoing.

You’ll have a shell of a good time celebrating the state’s star crustacean during the annual Maine Lobster Festival, happening July 31 to Aug. 4 at Harbor Park in Rockland.

The festival’s five-day schedule features an arts and crafts show, parade and tasting event.

Other highlights of the Maine Lobster Festival include the International Great Crate Race, during which participants attempt to race across a string of lobster traps in Rockland Harbor. There’s also a seafood cooking contest, road race and plenty of kids’ activities.

Some of the musical acts performing over the five days are Paddy Mills, Rigometrics, Charlie and The Hustle and Julia Gagnon.

Don’t forget about the actual lobsters. You’ll have plenty of chances to eat your fill.
