New Zealand-built yachts for sale: six of the finest specimens
Although New Zealand is a small and relatively isolated country, she punches well above her weight in the superyacht industry. Her yards have an enviable reputation for building fine superyachts, both power and sail, that garner prestigious awards and feature prominently in regattas worldwide. We asked Ivor Wilkins, eminent writer and commentator on the New Zealand yachting scene for his comments on this phenomenon:
Ivor says that the foundation of New Zealand's superyacht success was built on a number of planets aligning simultaneously in the late 1980s and early 1990s. As an island nation in an isolated corner of the south west Pacific, New Zealand had a strong connection with the sea, both from a commercial and recreational standpoint.
In the mid-1980s, the first New Zealand superyacht yard was established by Neville Crichton, an extremely competitive, hard-driving sailor, who had cut his teeth in the cauldron of IOR racing.
Having made his fortune in the motor industry, he assembled a small team, leased space at an existing boatyard and built a 28m sloop, Chanel . That project led to the establishment of Alloy Yachts. Although Crichton relinquished his ownership of the yard quite early on, he became a frequent client, building a succession of six Dubois-design sloops and a Dubois motor yacht.
Yards like Yachting Developments, which specialises in composite construction, Fitzroy Yachts, McMullen & Wing and others created their own portfolios, and a slew of support industries sailmakers, spar makers, electronics companies, design studios flourished.
For a nation of just over 4 million people, this rise to prominence in a very exacting world market has much to do with culture. New Zealand's relative isolation has led to a practical, can-do approach which tackles problems head on and tends to embrace innovation.
Also, a strong connection with the sea has seen the marine industry populated by people who understand boats. Boatbuilding is not just a job. It is a passion.
Here we present six yachts built by New Zealand's premier yards and currently for sale.
Red Dragon 2008 51.7m 28 million
Red Dragon is a 51.7m sloop built by Alloy Yachts in 2008 to a design by Dubois with an ultra-luxury and contemporary interior by Wilmotte & Associates. This epic yacht is as sturdy as it is beautiful, with the ability for fast passages and long periods of autonomy. Red Dragon was a finalist in the 2008 Boat International World Superyacht Awards.
Listed for sale at 28 million, her broker, James Mcmaster at McMaster Yachts says, ' Red Dragon is an outstanding yacht. She is the culmination of experience gained by the owner aboard his previous R ed Dragon, the 42.9 metre Vitters-built sloop. She is in exceptional condition having just completed a substantial refit in Mallorca. This included painting her hull and topsides as well the removal of her mast and rigging. All the PBO components of her standing rigging have been replaced and she has new running rigging as well. It is important to note that, very unusually, the same captain, engineer and mate who were involved in her build have remained on board.'
Big Fish 2010 45m $29 million
When McMullen & Wing's 45m expedition yacht Big Fish burst onto the scene in 2010, the superyacht industry was rocked in its moorings. Here was a boat that could cruise the world's most glamorous destinations and hold its own alongside the most desirable yachts in the marina. But more than that, Big Fish was a boat packed with innovations and cutting-edge technology equipping it to pursue a more adventurous course, to take a new breed of thrill-seeker to any destination on earth, all in total luxury.
Fast forward 24 months and this vision of luxury expedition yachting has been enthusiastically endorsed by a virtual clean sweep of the superyacht world's major awards, and a string of successful charters stretching from the sun-kissed waters of the Caribbean and the south Pacific, to white-knuckle, once-in-a-lifetime adventures in both the Arctic and Antarctic seas.
Says her broker, Neil Cheston at Y.CO, ' Big Fish is quite unique in that many claim to be explorer yachts but few have anything like her storage capacity, luxury and 9,000 mile range. Less that two years old, she's already covered over 50,000 nautical miles and ventured to every corner of the globe. Able to carry stores and supplies for 12 weeks at sea, Big Fish is in fantastic shape.'
Inmocean 2008 41m $13.5 million
The 41m sloop Inmocean , built by Fitzroy Yachts in 2008, is a classic style yacht. Her pretty, easy flowing sheer line with long classic ends promotes a gentle motion at sea and keeps the decks dry.
Her interior, designed by Adam Lay Studio, has the owner and guest accommodation forward in three cabins while the crew is aft in three cabins. Designed for long ocean passages and off-the-beaten-track cruising, she turns heads wherever she goes. Inmocean is striking, timeless and a joy to sail.
Toby Walker has her listed for sale at Dubois Yachts asking $13.5 million and says, 'She is a unique yacht, combining the very latest in superyacht systems and technology, but unlike many modern yachts she has the lines and style of a classic. Grace and comfort make Inmocean one of the friendliest yachts on which to cruise, coupled with a very high build quality from Fitzroy Yachts.'
Aime Sea 1994 35.11m 5.5 million
Aime Sea (Ex Corinthian ) was the fourth Dubois design built by Alloy Yachts when she was launched in 1994. She combines good sailing performance with a versatile layout and has a wonderful, light and airy maple interior by Redman Whiteley Dixon.
Aime Sea has recently benefited from an extensive refit and is in first-class condition with all her systems maintained to the highest standards. She is MCA compliant and is commercially registered in the Cayman Islands.
Her broker, Simon Goldsworthy at Camper & Nicholsons International comments: 'Benefiting from an undoubted pedigree, her carbon rig means Aime Sea sails superbly. Having been neglected under her previous ownership the yacht has benefited from substantial investment by the current owner since the purchase in 2008, and Aime Sea has been returned to superb mechanical and technical condition throughout.
'All that remains for a new owner is to repaint her hull and superstructure in the colour of their choice to complement the rig, mechanical and systems refit already undertaken. Her more than enviable charter record over the last few years also gives potential purchasers the option of offsetting a considerable amount of the annual running costs. At the current asking price of 5.5 million she provides excellent value for money to a new owner looking for a trouble-free investment. The owner has now finished using her and is keen to receive offers.'
Eclipse 1991 32.6m 5.5 million
Eclipse , launched as Esprit in 1991, was the first Dubois design to be built by Alloy Yachts and she began a long and highly successful association. All technical areas have been either upgraded or refitted. A large volume yacht, Eclipse is in turnkey condition and ready for worldwide cruising.
Nick Dean has her listed for sale at Ocean Independence and says, '_Eclipse_ is a classic Alloy that is a proven worldwide cruiser. The current owner has sailed her across the Pacific and Atlantic on many occasions and yet she is still presented in truly fantastic condition. All new rig and sail wardrobe in 2011 means she is right up to top specification and ready for further world cruising.'
Neptune 2004 25.6m 2,957,000
Built by Fitzroy Yachts in 2004, Neptune is designed for extended ocean cruising and is fabricated in 'Alustar' aluminium as a custom yacht tailor-made to the owner's specific requirements.
The spacious accommodation includes a three-cabin layout aft, the owner and all guest's cabins having private en suite heads. The two forward crew cabins also have separate heads. The generous main saloon provides a dining area to starboard and comfortable lounge. The deckhouse incorporates an additional dining area, chart table and inside steering position. Fully retractable side windows provide a pleasant open aspect and enhance the panoramic views afforded from the deckhouse.
Interior joinery is American walnut to complement the red leather upholstery and other quality textiles used throughout. Two Charles Eames designed loungers placed in the lower saloon complete a very luxurious fit out.
Bernard Gallay at Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage has her listed for sale and says, 'Designed by the famous German naval architects Judel Vrolijk, Neptune is a true long distance sailing yacht with luxurious accommodation and high quality equipment. The interior is very well fitted indeed with a proper deck house, leather settees and a welcoming atmosphere
'She is in spotless condition and with her recent reduced asking price of 2.957 million, she is very attractive on the current brokerage market.'

Visiting Yachts
Testimonial, welcome to new zealand.
It is not for nothing that New Zealand is known as ‘the whole world in one country.’ For a small country, New Zealand offers more in fewer miles than any other country on earth. From rainforest to snow, to white sand beaches, geothermal sites, and glaciers, New Zealand has it all.
The country offers a unique blend of cultures, and Maori culture is a core part of New Zealand’s national identity. With its Polynesian history added to that of the European settlers, New Zealand has a rhythm all on its own with a relaxed sunny atmosphere that is fiercely competitive, especially on the sports field.
A country synonymous with the water, seafarers have always been attracted to New Zealand’s unspoiled and beautiful shores. There are than 15,000km of beautiful coastline across two main islands – North and South – and hugely varied landscapes.
Key Cruising Areas
New Zealand is a land of variety from the subtropical white sandy beaches in the North Island to the deep and mysterious Sounds & Fiords in the South. New Zealand can provide something for everyone from sitting reading in a quiet bay to jet boating and bungy jumping, fishing, diving, snorkelling all surrounded by stunning scenery.
Only a one hour steam from Auckland’s CBD, the Hauraki Gulf offers many options for guests from Waiheke Island, New Zealand’s version of Martha’s Vineyard, to Great Barrier Island with its amazing diving. Enduringly popular is the Bay of Islands, the gateway to the North of the North Island and it’s 100+ islands offering shelter, sandy beaches and activities.
Head to the South Island, and it’s a different world with the same laid-back kiwi culture. The Marlborough Sounds offer amazing diving and access to New Zealand’s leading white wine vineyards. For the adventurous, Fiordland is perfect, with its dramatic almost Jurassic scenery and adventure.
To see the whole country allow seven to eight weeks to truly enjoy the total experience. If you have less time, stick to Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf and the sunny Bay of Islands in the North.

The service that we have received from yourself and your team at Asia Pacific Superyachts NZ has been exemplary. From prior to Aquijo’s arrival into Auckland in September 2018, right through a busy maintenance period and an extensive Owner Cruise around New Zealand, you have gone out of your way to assist the vessel and her crew with everything that has been required.
Your ability to clear inbound shipments quickly, and your ‘Kiwi Can-Do’ attitude in particular, have been just a couple of the many reasons that I will be happy to recommend your services to any other Yachts which I hear are headed to New Zealand in the future.
Thank you sincerely for all of your help.
Luke Hoskins Captain, SY AQUIJO.
“For the lead up months prior to arrival Asia Pacific Superyachts NZ were forthcoming with assistance and with additional matters regarding the pet dog we carried onboard and Helicopter permits that were to require special attention. The organization of provisions, fuel, dockage, amenities and all those usual odd extras we could throw at them were arranged without hassle. The itinerary and guides selected to suit the owner’s requirements were perfect. Land excursions, flights and accommodation ashore were all organized by Asia Pacific and executed without fault.”
“Asia Pacific Superyachts NZ were simply the most productive and supportive agents I have ever had the pleasure of engaging. Whether Jeanette or Janice was responding to a request from me or from another member of crew, they acted in the same manner and always went out of their way to deliver. Jeanette’s knowledge and her ability to make things happen were a great asset to have during our trip around New Zealand. Janice’s ability to make things appear as soon as the email was sent or phone call ended went into making the trip run as smooth as possible. They truly were a 24/7 support to us.”
“With regard to your services when we were in NZ twice in 2017 I have to say that they were superb. You guys put a lot of time in each vessel making them feel that they are the only ones that you are servicing at any one time. Nothing was a problem and you would go out of your way to make things happen. Your care of the crew with regard to extra-curricular activities was awesome and we would not hesitate to use you guys the next time we are in NZ. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Thanks once again.
Kind regards, Dùghall macLachlainn”
Imagine an urban environment where everyone lives within half an hour of beautiful beaches, hiking trails and a dozen enchanted holiday islands. Add a sunny climate, a background rhythm of Polynesian culture and a passion for outstanding food, wine and shopping – you’re beginning to get the picture of Auckland.
In the Maori language, Auckland is known as Tamaki-Makau-Rau – ‘the maiden with a hundred suitors’. It earned this name because it was a region coveted by many tribes.
Waiheke Island – Hauraki Gulf
One of the larger Hauraki Gulf islands, Waiheke is just 14 kilometres from the heart of Auckland city. It’s a place that visitors, and the people who are lucky enough to live there, find particularly relaxing.
Home to many of New Zealand’s successful artists, Waiheke has long standing arts and crafts focus. You’ll find a number of galleries and craft outlets in the seaside shopping areas. There are plenty of places to enjoy a good coffee or a taste of New Zealand’s clean, fresh cuisine. And with more than a dozen high-quality vineyards, Waiheke is a wine lover’s delight. Many of the vineyards include relaxing cafe-style restaurants that look out across the vine-covered valleys to the blue sea beyond.
Great Barrier Island
With a permanent population of around 700 this sparsely populated 285 square km island is one of the few untouched and un-spoilt places still remaining in the world.
Great Barrier has the kind of rugged, untouched beauty that appeals to adventurers and that is getting harder and harder to find on our planet. Take your tramping boots, because the magnificent forests are laced with well-formed roads and tracks that lead to secluded natural hot springs and historic Kauri dams. Unsurprisingly, wildlife flourishes here – the island is a haven for rare birds and lizards. Around the coasts, it’s all about endless white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters that offer legendary fishing and diving experiences.
Mercury and Alderman Islands
Great Mercury Island is privately owned by Sir Michael Fay and David Richwhite. The remaining islands in the group are managed by the Department of Conservation, and are popular diving and fishing spots because of its unspoiled coastline, pristine beaches and rich reefs. The owners of the Great Mercury Island are quite reasonable and will allow people on their island as long as some basic rules are followed are protected, landing is prohibited in some locations.
Mercury Islands offer spectacular rock pinnacles, caves and drop-offs in 8-30m visibility, 15 Nm out from Whitianga. The underwater terrain is exceptionally varied throughout the Islands. Never Fail Rock is a popular cave diving area with drop-offs to 37m.
The Aldermans are some 10 Nm offshore where scenic pinnacles and walls drop off to 55m and harbour abundant marine life. Big game fish are often seen along the drop-offs. Dogger Reef, 15m below the surface has a variety of pelagic species in summer and is often visited by sharks. Tairua Reef around 22km offshore has stands of black coral and myriad schools of fish in depths ranging from 9-46m.
Poor Knights Marine Reserve
The Poor Knights Islands were named by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. Cousteau would know, and Cousteau was right! Separated from mainland New Zealand, the Poor Knights are influenced by a warm current that originates in the Coral Sea, north of Australia. Water temperature is higher, and visibility significantly greater than in nearby coastal waters.
Tropical and subtropical life forms have become established among the diverse and multiple environments formed by the island’s volcanic origins. Underground caves, tunnels and archways are home to an extraordinary variety seaweeds and dense populations of friendly, colourful fish.
You can expect, the mixture of tropical and subtropical sea life, and the clarity of the water result in an underwater environment that is truly unique on this planet.
Bay Of Islands
The Bay of Islands- Northland has one of the best maritime parks in New Zealand with 144 islands and bays. Marine life includes whales, penguins, dolphins and Fantastic Sports Fishing.
On the East Coast of Northland, Russell, Opua, Paihia, Waitangi & Kerikeri all make up part of the Bay of Islands, a world-renowned tourist destination and the cultural centre of New Zealand. Waitangi is where NZ’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi, was signed in 1840. Some of New Zealand’s oldest buildings are found in the Bay of Islands. Desirable Kerikeri is one of NZ’s fastest growing towns and a horticultural hub with significant orchard plantings.
Whangaroa Harbour
Whangaroa Harbour, situated in the far north of New Zealand on the protected East Coast and has without doubt one of the most productive Marlin Fishing grounds in New Zealand. Whangaroa is world renown its spectacular scenery, safe anchorage and for having the largest Striped Marlin in the world……commonly known to most as the Striped Marlin capital of the world. When marlin fishing just 15 minutes from the entrance to the protected harbour, pack attacks are not uncommon.

Cruising grounds for adventure seekers await on a New Zealand yacht charter
Boasting extensive coastlines, diverse natural landscapes, and untouched native forests, the two islands of New Zealand are perfect adventure cruising grounds. North Island is home to Auckland, aka “City of Sails,” where fine restaurants and shops abound. The capital of Wellington hosts numerous galleries and museums, while the Bay of Islands is a subtropical maritime park with an abundance of marine life. Alternatively, South Island guarantees flawless sailing conditions, restful retreats ashore and great sporting opportunities for the adventurous charterer. Further south, you’ll enjoy the clear waters, fjords, and coves along Marlborough Sounds, which offer stunning anchorages. A Message from Ben Osborne
“Exploring the endless coastline of New Zealand by luxury yacht is by far the best way to travel in New Zealand. There are numerous possible itineraries guests can take from the warmer sub-tropical climate of the northern islands to the striking glaciers and mountainous beauty of the south.
Trips inland are also made possible with excellent land and helicopter transfer services to visit key points of interest not accessible by boat.”
Ben Osborne General Manager
Destinations
Sandy beaches offer a golden trim to the shores of glistening, pristine seas. Snowy mountains melt in to oceans filled with gargantuan blue travellers from Antarctica. Smiling faces and happy hands wave “g-day” and offer a warm welcome, “haere mai”. Forests of twisted wood and moss-covered stone lead you to grassy knolls and views of soft blue infinity.
It’s Glaciers edge ever further on their journey as they wale to the earth and the sky. Waves curl to the surfers’ delight, left and right as the ocean smiles.

"... from the first communication regarding, entry to New Zealand, reserving berths, arranging local suppliers, contractors and international servicing agents, the task at hand was made much easier with your expertise and guidance. It certainly made my life and that of crew a much easier and enjoyable place to be.
Nothing was ever a problem and no job was to small or to large. I certainly appreciated the attention to detail and no stone left unturned."

M/Y Endless Summer
"Our owners trip was filled with many challenges, all of which you and your staff handled so very calmly and completely. From multiple arrivals and subsequently departures of our group, to shore side transfers, helicopter trips and weather adversities and even un-expected commercial back up flights, you and your team scrambled in an instant to come through for my owner and his group without drama.
I was very impressed with this Allan and a big thank you for the efforts behind the scenes that no doubt went in to these arrangements. You certainly have your thumb on the pulse down there. ."
Captain Anthony J Hodgson, M/Y Endless Summer
"All of the arrangements were always on time and confirmed in ample time to ensure that the trip was able to proceed smoothly and efficiently, and this was much appreciated by the owners and myself.
All of your ancillary services and suppliers with whom we had dealings all proved to be of high standards also, and in general the whole operation showed to good effect that it is genuinely aware of and interested in maintaining the level of service that cruising yachts require and demand."

Spotlight on New Zealand
The arrival of the America’s Cup in 2021 brought renewed attention to New Zealand as a far-flung and multi-dimensional yachting destination.
“New Zealand is the best kept secret in the world, believe me”, says Sir Michael Hill, owner of superyacht VvS1 . “Of course, there are snippets of great places everywhere in the world, but there really is no place like New Zealand.” It’s a sentiment shared by many superyacht owners and charter guests who have gone the extra mile to reach this far-flung destination.
As the oldest trophy in international sport, the America’s Cup , lands in Auckland early next year, many yachts are considering heading over there for the first time, either to grab a spectator’s spot on the water or to compete in the Mastercard Superyacht Regatta, taking place at the end of February. In the meantime, many yacht owners, like Delisa Mayer, are coming to New Zealand purely to explore a remote country with enormous appeal.
“We almost didn’t come to New Zealand because we made the mistake of looking at it as one country instead of multiple destinations,” said Mayer, joint owner of The Big Blue , which undertook an extended tour around the country in 2014. “You get everything here; the variety of the country is incredible and diverse.”
Millennium Cup Image: JEFF BROWN | BREED MEDIA
This month, the world’s most southerly regatta, the Millennium Cup (29 January to 1 February) is taking place once again in the Bay of Islands, offering up yet another excuse for superyachts to get off the beaten path and head south. “We have raced the Millennium Cup multiple times and won it twice,” says the owner or Silvertip , which is taking part again this year. “Racing in the Bay of Islands surrounded by a dolphin pod playing at the bow is always a treat. Any superyacht cruising in the Pacific should make a point of doing the Millennium Cup.”
It’s a sentiment shared by Robert Gleed of superyacht photographers Breed Media . “Of all the places in the world we have filmed and photographed superyachts, the Bay of Islands stands out above them all,” he says. “It’s a magical place, far away from the crowds, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique environment in the seclusion of quiet bays with isolated beaches all topped off with some of the best sailing waters in the world. The Cup itself is a relaxed, yet exciting event that is truly Kiwi in its vibe. Anyone who is privileged enough to be part of it will remember it forever and want to return time and time again.”
Marlborough Sounds
Events like the Millennium Cup and the America’s Cup might draw the crowds, but New Zealand is really an exceptional yachting destination in its own right. With 15,000 kilometres of coastline and the two major land masses to explore (North and South Island, divided by just 12 nautical miles), yachting visitors really are spoilt for choice.
Peter Busfield, executive director at NZ Marine , believes that the country’s sense of freedom is a real draw. “One of the first things visiting yachts will experience is freedom,” he says. “Freedom to catch saltwater fish without the need for a licence, freedom to anchor and walk along any beach and the freedom to enjoy many activities without crowds and queues. And the locals are so appreciative of visitors that they will offer more assistance and advice than you can handle!”
Whilst Auckland and the Bay of Islands might divert more attention to North Island, thanks to their regattas and yachting events, the South Island is just as impressive and visitors should ignore it at their peril. With wine to sample in Marlborough Sounds, glaciers to climb (not to mention spectacular parachuting, mountain biking and fishing) in Queenstown and mesmerising fjords to sail through, it’s a rich, adventure-seekers paradise with breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife. “One of our best day trips away from the boat, hands down, was the Marlborough Sounds,” said Delisa Mayer. “Everything you want is right there in that little jewel of New Zealand.”
Whichever island visitors choose – or even if they attempt both (experts recommend at least three months to circumnavigate the country), there is culture, marine life and epic landscape to impress. From Northland at the tip, with its white-sand beaches and rich Maori heritage, to Southland, with its towering peaks and rainforest in the far south – it’s little wonder that many visitors are making plans to return the minute they leave. “You’ll see us back,” says Delisa Mayer. “You’ll see us back sooner than you know.”

“Altair represents the perfection and quality of the workmanship that has been available locally. It couldn’t have been done any better – the challenge was met at a very very high level. We came to Port Nikau because of the skillset that is here in Whangārei, especially for a refit of a classic yacht of this period. We knew local shipwrights and boat builders that could help. The level of workmanship here is second to none of anything I have seen in the world of 40-odd years in the industry, visiting some of the best yards in Europe and America. It’s strange to find everything you want in a small community like this. It’s been fantastic.”

Visiting New Zealand in 2021
Alongside the america's cup, what does the 2021 calendar in new zealand have in store for visiting superyachts.
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron will be marking its 150th anniversary in 2021 alongside the America’s Cup. This means a packed year of events and celebrations, offering an exciting opportunity for visiting superyachts to experience the best of what New Zealand has to offer.
“The 150-year legacy of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is worthy of more than just one event at one time,” says Aaron Young, vice commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. “So we are marking this with a year of celebratory events and occasions, the pinnacle of which will be the hosting of the 36th America’s Cup. New Zealand is certainly the place to be in 2021 and visitors to Auckland during this time are in for a treat like never before when it comes to celebrating our rich sailing heritage.”
The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is particularly looking forward to hosting many visiting superyachts and owners. “A full calendar of events from December 2020 through to April 2021 means fun on and off the water,” adds Young. “Owners and visitors can expect good down-to-earth and relaxed ‘kiwi’ hospitality. Our amazing and unique cruising waters around New Zealand are a must for any visiting yacht and we are doing all we can to make sure visitors won’t want to leave too quickly.”
“Our amazing and unique cruising waters around New Zealand are a must for any visiting yacht and we are doing all we can to make sure visitors won’t want to leave too quickly.”
The celebrations kick off with a race to Kawau Island on New Year’s Eve 2020, followed by the Kawau New Year’s Day Regatta, both of which are expected to attract the attention of visiting superyachts. An exciting and diverse calendar will then begin, including superyacht regattas in both the Bay of Islands and Auckland, as well as a superyacht fishing competition to ensure motoryachts are involved in the action. The Squadron also expects a number of J Class Yachts to come to New Zealand, with planned sailing in the Bay of Islands in February and Auckland in March.
To ensure that yachting and various associations are properly represented during this auspicious year, the RNZYS set up a 150th anniversary committee to roll out this series of events and regattas. The committee is working closely with Emirates Team New Zealand and supporting associations such as NZ Marine.
“We appreciate that New Zealand is a long way to come for a lot of yachts – it’s a destination – and we want to make it as enjoyable as possible for owners and crew,” says Peter Busfield, executive director of NZ Marine Industry Association. “As well as a month-long event calendar, part of the plan has been to build up facilities, optimise the country’s existing business potential and work with the government to ensure we are a user-friendly destination.”
New Zealand has a long-established marine industry renowned for maintenance and refit, and this is being enhanced by the development of berthing and facilities in anticipation of an influx of yachts in 2020/21 for the America's Cup. As well as being able to take advantage of New Zealand’s yacht-friendly regulations that allow foreign-flagged vessels temporary entry for up to 24 months and the ability to charter in its waters, yachts will have access to new infrastructure including a superyacht marina in the Bay of Islands, a superyacht village in Auckland for the America’s Cup, a new 320-tonne travelift at Vessel Works in the Bay of Plenty and a new 720-tonne travelift at Orams Marine in Auckland. DYT Yacht Transport is also putting on extra sailings to bring yachts to New Zealand for 2020/21 and take them back to Europe in time for the summer in the Mediterranean.
Having considered the lessons learned from the berthing and anchorage arrangements at the last America’s Cup in Bermuda, NZ Marine will be organising a superyacht VIP programme for yachts anchored in Auckland Harbour during the event. “From the registrations of interest that we have already received, we are expecting around 160 superyachts over the America’s Cup period,” says Busfield. “With only 100 berths available, that means there will likely be around 60 yachts at anchor, so we are working on a VIP programme to give those yachts easy access to the village and marinas and make their experience as smooth as possible.”
The America’s Cup has a longstanding superyacht following and, with the Pacific rising in popularity as a superyacht destination , the 36th edition is sure to see an increase the numbers of yachts in the region in the lead up to, during and after the event. Some yachts will also be planning to make the most of the trip south and extend their itineraries to the nearby cruising grounds around Fiji, French Polynesia and Australia. This will be an important time for the Pacific because many destinations are ramping up their superyacht offering in anticipation of increased activity and, for superyacht owners, the buzz forming around the region makes it an optimal time to visit.

Roberton Island, Northland & Bay of Islands
By Ruth Lawton
The Bay of Islands is New Zealand's premier cruising ground. You can explore a different island every day.
A region synonymous with exclusive private lodges and cliff-top golf courses, the Northland of today is a far cry from when the Maori first paddled ashore over 1000 years ago.
The region includes the game fishing ports of Russell and Whangaroa and the Bay of Islands . These spectacular isles, there are over 150 of them, are alive with history and marine life - where every secluded cove and empty beach has a story to tell.
The Poor Knights Islands, remnants of ancient volcanoes, stand sentinel over a spectacular marine reserve and beckon divers from all over the world to come and experience the ocean's crystal clarity.

2022’s largest superyacht event in the southern hemisphere, shows yachts have made a return
January 22, 2023 by Caroline
A superyacht welcome function, held last month marking the start of the cruising season in New Zealand, showed the strength of the return of superyachts to the southern hemisphere cruising grounds.
Superyachts are back, and the New Zealand industry has welcomed them with open arms.
At the country’s annual Superyacht Welcome Function, which marks the start of the superyacht season in New Zealand, crew from more than 30 superyachts gathered to celebrate the return to New Zealand’s iconic cruising grounds.
Hundreds of crew, both newly arrived in New Zealand and from yachts that had undergone refit in the country through winter, demonstrated the return of superyachts in force to New Zealand for its cruising season.
Hosted by Superyacht New Zealand and NZ Marine, crew were joined by key industry representatives and 54 sponsor companies from the domestic market, which specialises in the provision of high-quality refit and services. The event was also an opportunity to foreshadow one of the key events on the superyacht calendar in New Zealand, as Sail GP prepares to race in March 2023, with Sail GP’s chief commercial officer, Karl Budge on hand to get the crowd excited about the superyacht and VIP race viewing to come.
New Zealand’s superyacht-friendly legislation and easy clearance policies have seen yachts rapidly return to the country, with a two-year temporary import entry (TIE) gaining yachts tax concessions. With the opportunity to access GST-free goods, services, and refit, the nation has also greatly increased its marine infrastructure, ensuring vessels have world-class facilities.
The past three years have seen New Zealand’s inner city marinas, haul out and refit facilities increase exponentially and it’s now possible to berth an exceptional number of large superyachts in the heart of major cities.
Peter Busfield, executive director of NZ Marine, the organisation which administers Superyacht New Zealand, greeted guests and thanked crew for visiting New Zealand.
He invited crew to pick up a copy of the Destination & Cruising New Zealand book, which is also available for download. Detailing the best of New Zealand cruising, it acts as a companion for crew both planning their New Zealand journey and those already in the country.
The guide has just been re-released with updated information. Download the Guide here , and see Superyacht New Zealand for more information.

A top Artefact: $240m superyacht berths in Northland

By Peter de Graaf of RNZ
One of the world’s most exclusive superyachts has berthed in the Northland port of Ōpua for a two-week stay.
The 80m Artefact is owned by Canadian tech entrepreneur Mike Lazaridis, best known for creating the BlackBerry mobile device.
Built in Germany in 2020 at an estimated cost of $240m and named Motor Yacht of the Year in 2021, Artefact is one of the world’s biggest superyachts by volume.
It is also believed to be the biggest motor yacht ever to visit the Bay of Islands.
The vessel arrived just after 1pm yesterday and was piloted to Ōpua wharf by the harbourmaster vessel Waikare.
Artefact is expected to stay in the Bay of Islands until January 1.
It boasts a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system, a range of 5300 nautical miles and a crew of 17, including two chefs and a sous chef.
The vessel is notable for the sheer amount of glass used on the passenger decks - 70 tons (63 tonnes) of glass went into its construction - and interior features such as a high-ceilinged tai chi room designed so that practitioners of the martial art can hold a sword above their heads.
Lazaridis, 62, was born in Turkey to Greek parents, who moved to Canada when he was a child.
At the age of 12 he won a prize for reading every science book in the library at Windsor, his home town in Ontario.
After founding BlackBerry he specialised in quantum computing. He has donated large sums of money to theoretical physics research.
When Lazaridis was nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2014, he was described as the father of what later became known as the smartphone.
It was not known if he was on board when Artefact docked on Tuesday afternoon.
Irwin Wilson, commercial manager of port authority Far North Holdings, said the visit of the “magnificent” vessel was a sign of the Bay of Islands’ post-Covid recovery and a bumper season on the water.
Artefact was joined in the bay by the boutique cruise ship Crystal Symphony, one of a record 93 cruise ships expected this season.
Though many more small cruise ships were calling in this year, the number of passengers would also be a record as long as there were no cancellations due to weather or other factors this year.
The season would ramp up after January 18 with three ships on one day on January 31. The biggest ship, Ovation of the Seas with 4180 passengers, was due back on February 12.
Wilson said cruise ships played an important role in the economy of the Bay of Islands, and Northland, because they brought “fresh money” into the region rather than just the money locals recycled among themselves.
With each passenger spending on average $180 on shore, that added up to $23m this season, he said.

NZ Shipyard Completes Stage One of Major Development
By George Bains
New Zealand shipyard Orams Marine has completed stage one of its extensive development project. The development at the Auckland-based facility enhances the refit and maintenance capabilities in the Southern Hemisphere and South Pacific region, with berthing for yachts up to 90m.
The milestone was celebrated by stakeholders on Thursday evening in front of the new 12,000 sqm hardstand. The new 820-tonne and 85-tonne travel lifts, along with a number of superyachts, provided a backdrop for proceedings against the Auckland city skyline.
Neven Barbour, CEO of Orams Marine, began the event with an acknowledgement of the effort by the many parties who have worked to bring the project to fruition. The development has involved the Orams Marine team, their partners in the Auckland Council and its agencies, as well as a number of key marine industry figures, all of whom have collaborated on creating a vision for the waterfront over the past decades.
“The location here is unique and you can see the investment that’s gone into it. What has been created here will serve the industry well into the future,” says Neven Barbour.
The first stage of development has encompassed extensive dredging and construction works before the installation of a 12,000 sqm hardstand, three 90m marina piers, a new 820t marine travel lift, as well as a new 85t marine travel lift, and an industry-leading water treatment plant.
“Strengthening the sea wall, containing contamination, plus the in-built water treatment plant which sets a new standard in discharge water treatment; the result of this is a best-in-class engineering solution,” Barbour continued.
David Rankin, Chief Executive of Auckland Council’s urban regeneration agency, Eke Panuku Development Auckland, spoke of the development being a crucial component in the wider vision for Auckland’s waterfront.
“The project we’re celebrating this evening is a good illustration of one of the core strategies we’ve been pursuing on the waterfront, which is that we wanted to retain in Auckland a genuine, authentic, working waterfront character. Right back when the original planning was done by Auckland Council, we’ve always been clear that special and focused effort would be made to preserve and strengthen over time, the marine business component of the waterfront,” said Rankin.
“There has been a very significant investment by Orams in this site. It’s great to finally see a big travel lift. I have been reading about it, and seeing lots of overseas examples, and then to walk up and see just how big it is. Also knowing the terrific space that piece of equipment puts you in for getting not only the most domestic business available, but also critically for the country overall as it pitches you very competitively for the international superyacht market,” Rankin continued.
CEO of the NZ Marine industry association, Peter Busfield, followed David Rankin in speaking at the event. “David, thank you for your confidence in the marine industry,” said Busfield “I’m sure we will deliver, and it will be good for not only the marine industry, but for the economy of Auckland and of New Zealand.”
The development at Orams Marine is significant for superyachts wishing to cruise in the awe-inspiring South Pacific region. Large refit and maintenance facilities are essential for ensuring that yachts need not return to Europe or North America for shipyard periods, and instead stay to enjoy one of the most adventurous regions in the world.
The next stage of development will see extensive commercial buildings completed in the latter part of 2022, with a residential development to follow.

The 11 Most Exciting Superyacht Debuts at the Monaco Yacht Show
The Monaco Yacht Show always promises a stellar lineup— last year had an unusually large number of wild launches—and this time around will be no exception. More than 120 superyachts, including 20-plus that measure 200 feet and above, will be on the docks at Port Hercule, with beautiful Monte Carlo in the hills above.
Among the fleet of anticipated launches is the 400-foot Kismet . Built by Lürssen and launched earlier this year, this stunner will be shown before the winter charter season, at a weekly rate of $3.25 million. The vessel is sure to stand out, thanks to the large silver jaguar sculpture fitted under its bowsprit.

Besides bling, showgoers will notice the concerted push toward sustainability this year. Rossinavi has introduced the Seawolf X , its first hybrid-electric catamaran, and Nautor Swan’s sailing maxi yacht, DreamCatcher , is also its first hybrid. Sanlorenzo is launching Almax , its first 50-meter (165-foot) vessel with hydrogen fuel cells. It was developed with Siemens Energy.
Siemens is also sponsoring the show’s Sustainability Hub, which has become a breeding ground for eco-friendly concepts and new ideas to promote a greener superyacht sector. This year’s conference will cover alternative propulsion, outlining how it will be adopted over the next five years. The show’s Yacht Design & Innovation Hub takes a less technical approach to sustainability. It’s the place where leading designers and mainstream innovators converge, presenting vessels that will shape the future of superyacht design.
Here are 11 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Lürssen ‘Kismet’
The 400-foot Kismet is the most anticipated boat on display at Monaco this year. True to form, Shahid Khan’s third Lürssen, which charters for $3.25 million per week, will be an exceptional landmark in a marina of superyachts. Alongside its Nemo lounge for viewing marine life, a Balinese-inspired spa with the first chromotherapy bathtub on a yacht, and upper-deck dining options for 24 people, the vessel has a duplex owner’s apartment with two separate marbled bathrooms, a fireplace, and gilded wall coverings. When guests have had their fill of the DJ station and Bogányi piano, the ’80s retro matrix dance floor should keep the party going.
Royal Huisman ‘Special One’
Set to make a splash is Royal Huisman’s 171-foot Special One , the largest sportfisherman in the world. Commissioned by an experienced yachtsman and passionate fisherman, the monster sportfish is kitted out with a fighting chair, 22 fishing rods, insulated cooler boxes, and a dedicated bait-and-tackle room. The teak foredeck can transition into a sheltered private lounge area and also converts to an outdoor cinema. Designed by Vripack, the vessel offers up proportions and seakeeping capabilities that are matched by its impressive 30-knot top speed.
Rossinavi ‘Seawolf X’
Looming large above the water, the 140-foot Seawolf X is Rossinavi’s most ambitious build to date. The hybrid-electric catamaran is the Italian shipyard’s first multihull, which can stay in electric mode during transatlantic trips for 80 percent of the time. Even more impressive is the onboard artificial intelligence system—Rossinavi AI—which analyses the operation of the vessel, predicts the needs of guests and optimizes crew service and logistics. The interior is designed by New York-based Meyer Davis, with an exterior penned by Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design. Its wow features include a cockpit centered around a pool, a second hidden pool on the bow area, and an outdoor cinema.
Bilgin ‘Eternal Spark’
Eternal Spark is the first hull in Bilgin’s 163 series. In addition to six outdoor and three indoor lounge areas, the yacht can host over 100 people while at anchor from its five dedicated bar areas. Hot Lab’s use of wood inlays and embossed natural leather create a refined interior aesthetic, while the combination of a huge beach club, sauna, pool, and two cinemas—outdoor and indoor—should keep guests happy. Built with over 200 different materials, it shows how advanced the Turkish yard has become with its last few launches.
Sanlorenzo ‘Almax’
Sanlorenzo’s first fuel-cell-powered 50Steel model joins a growing list of yacht launches exploring alternative power sources. The fuel-cell technology converts biomethanol (green methanol) into enough electricity to cover the hotel load so the yacht can anchor all night without generators. Almax also has Sanlorenzo’s newly patented Hidden Engine Room (HER), located on the lower deck. This novel configuration creates enough interior volume to include a 1,615-square-foot beach club with a pool and unfolding sea terraces, while keeping the yacht below 500GT. The shipyard has confirmed the sale of four units to date.
Custom Line50
Making its global debut a Monaco, the four-decked Custom Line50 is the Italian shipyard’s new flagship model. The dedicated owner’s apartment on the upper deck includes full-height windows, a full-beam suite, and a large private terrace. The sun deck’s lounge seating, cocktail bar, uninterrupted views, and glass-edged infinity pool amplify the sense of being on a floating island. It’s an effective design that is replicated on the main aft deck. This area offers stepped access to the sea, a scenario that is reinforced by an aquamarine-and-cream interior color scheme.
Damen ‘Five Oceans’
The newest model from Damen’s Yacht Support 53 range, Five Oceans was built for Tommy Allen, an entrepreneur committed to ocean exploration and marine conservation. The vessel will be easy to spot in Monaco’s Port Hercules, thanks to its powder-blue, orange, and white hull. The custom build is Allen’s second yacht-support vessel from Damen. It has a sprawling aft deck to carry toys and tenders as well as a 15-ton deck crane for the launch and recovery of the electric boats and Triton 3300 Pro submersible. Five Oceans also carries an Icon A5 amphibious aircraft.
Tankoa ‘Diamond Binta’
Conceived as a world explorer, Tankoa’s 190-foot Diamond Binta blends a hybrid propulsion package with high-gloss finishes over a wooden interior. Penned by Francesco Paszkowski, Tankoa’s long-time design collaborator, the full custom build has an owner’s suite with a fold-out balcony, a forward helideck for shore-based excursions, a large beach club with a spa, and massage room as well as a sundeck with a gym and pool. A corridor on the lower deck connects the yacht’s five guest cabins to the beach area, passing through a viewable engine room.
Nautor Swan ‘DreamCatcher’
As Nautor Swan’s first hybrid yacht, the 88-foot DreamCatcher is described by the shipyard as a “no-compromise cruiser with a racer’s soul.” Designed for guest comfort with a maximum heeling angle of 20 degrees, its exterior is penned by veteran Swan designer Germán Frers, while the light-wood interior with gray accents is done by Misa Poggi. The aft cockpit has a new coachroof design with an integrated sprayhood, bimini, and modular benches that can be used for both lounging and dining. The stern area incorporates a large beach club area and tender garage. On the foredeck is the “sunset lounge.”
Oceanco ‘H3’
Built in 2000 as 312-foot Al Mirqab for a member of the Qatari royal family, the renovated H3 emerged from Oceanco’s facilities in 2023 looking brand new, with an extra 476 gross tons of internal volume. The vessel’s 33-foot extension—to accommodate the owner’s request for an infinity pool with a convertible dance floor and waterfall—and a fully replaced superstructure were enough for Lloyd’s Register to classify the yacht as a new build. A spa on the lower deck has a hammam, a sensory shower, a hair salon, and treatment rooms. The beach club with its rippled mirror ceiling offers stepped access to the sea.
Conrad ‘Extra Time’
Extra Time , the second hull in Conrad’s C144 series, has an exterior by Reymond Langton Design and naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design. The interior is by M2 Atelier. Much like its sistership Ace , Extra Time has a beach club, four guest lounge areas, a cinema, two bars and an infinity pool. Standout personal touches include an attention-grabbing King Kong sculpture in the main salon and the main-deck owner’s suite that’s accessed via a private study with an electric piano.

Who was on superyacht that sank off Sicily?
Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian superyacht including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer.
Friday 23 August 2024 12:34, UK
Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.
The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.
Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.
Here's what we know about those who were on the yacht.
Follow latest updates on the superyacht sinking
British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.
Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.
He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.
Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.
The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.
Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.
HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.
In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch
Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.
She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.
Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.
The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.
Jonathan Bloomer
Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.
According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.
The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.
He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.
Judy Bloomer
Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.
Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.
The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.
Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.
In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.
Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.
"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."
Neda Morvillo
Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.
The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.
The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.
Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."
She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.
He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".
Charlotte Golunski
Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.
She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.
"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.
"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."
The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.
Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.
Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".
