The tropical wood is far different than fiberglass or aluminum: teak came from living trees and needs to be treated with special attention. In this guide, you’ll learn the best practices for maintaining your teak using teak oil for boats.

Teak Oil For Boats

There are two essential steps for ensuring that your teak lasts long:

• Cleaning your teak and freeing it from any debris.
• Sealing your teak from the elements.

If you use the right teak care products , you can apply oil and sealer at the same time. This saves you money, energy, and time. If you find a teak oil, on the other hand, that says it needs further sealing after the oil has set in, keep browsing.

Teak Oil and Care Items You Need

• Life Scrub All . This heavy-duty stainless steel scrubber is great for scrubbing your teak clean without damaging it. Since teak and other hard woods are so difficult to scrub, a product that does most of the work for you will be a welcome way to clear out debris and prepare teak for oiling.
• Teak Brite® Brightener . Although this step isn’t always necessary, especially on new teak, you can use Teak Brite® before application of oil and sealer in order to give your teak a quick visual lift. Make sure to rinse thoroughly after use, and allow the teak to dry completely before the application of oil.
• Teak Brite® Advanced Formula Oil and Sealer . This is the step that accomplishes two in one. Let your teak dry a good 24 hours so that your oil and sealer will thoroughly penetrate the wood and give it the protection it needs. This is a very low-labor task, requiring only a simple application with a paint brush.

The most important thing to remember here is that each and every product should be applied separately. Allowing a full day for your teak to dry before applying the oil may seem like a long time to wait, but it will give you the best results.

Proper teak care doesn’t have to require endless reading and back-breaking work. With the right teak care products in hand, you can simply clean, rinse, dry, and apply the proper materials. If you do it the right way, your teak can be refinished in a weekend. Teak is an important material on any boat. It deserves the right products and the right care.

OLI-NATURA Yacht & Teak Oil  is our universal exterior oil with a very effective long-term UV resistance especially for the treatment and care of yacht decks, verandas, pool surroundings and garden furniture made of hard or exotic wood types as well as pressure and vacuum impregnated softwood.

The oil produces a hard-wearing surface and highlights the natural colour shade and grain of the wood. The product is easy to handle and deeply soaking. The UV light from the sun is blocked effectively and the wood is protected from turning grey or brittle.

Areas of application

For the basic treatment and care of all common hardwood types outside, such as yacht decks, verandas, pool surroundings and garden furniture.

Ingredients

Modified vegetable oils such as linseed oil; isoparaffinic hydrocarbon of pharmaceutical quality; lead-free drying agents, non-fading earth and mineral pigments, micronised titan oxide.

Storage properties

Storage time in unopened containers 12 months. Avoid temperatures over +30 °C at storage and transport.

Application:

Roller and brush coating application :

• Sand the wood gradually with grain sizes 80/100/120. The surface has to be clean, dry and free of grease, oil, wax and dust. With wooden floors we recommend you to fill in the gaps with OLI putty and sanding powder before the final sanding.
• Stir the hard wax oil well and pour it carefully on the surface (approx. 40-50 g/m²). Then spread it evenly thin with a brush, spatula or a mohair roller.
• Let the hard wax oil soak in for 20 to 30 minutes. Then rub it in with an oil brush or, if you have a wooden floor, with a single-disc machine with a beige or white pad.
• After a drying time of 6 to 8 hours, repeat the application as described in steps 2 and 3.
• Depending on the humidity and the temperatures, the oil is hardened after 2 to 3 days. Protect the surface from water during this time.

Comments/notes on use:

• Drying data refer to measurements under everyday conditions of 20°C and 50% humidity.
• Do not paint wooden objects outside in damp weather or under
• direct sunlight.
• Sand damaged areas well and apply 1-2 layers of hard wax oil!

**Danger of spontaneous combustion! Do not ball up rags. Clean used cloths/pads directly after use or keep them in a sealed container filled with water. Dispose of empty cans or unused portion in accordance with local, provincial, and federal regulations.

Follow-up treatment and care:

Use OLI-NATURA yacht & teak oil two times a year or as required for refreshment and care. For cleaning we recommend OLI-NATURA outdoor cleaner.

Starke Teak Clean is a next level cleaner and brightener that is gentle on caulk seams but tough on stains. This 2 part solution is perfect for cleaning grey teak that has lost its luster. 

Before starting, wet the teak and the surrounding area. Use rubber gloves and eye protection. Pour part A into a bucket. It can be diluted up to 4 to 1 or used full strength. With wood still wet, pour part A onto the teak or apply with brush/scouring pad. Lightly scrub in circular motion against the grain. Once the entire surface turns blackish, let it set in for 2-3 minutes. 

When applying part 2 use a separate bucket and brush/scouring pad. Part A is an acid and Part 2 is a base. They will neutralize each other upon contact. This chemical reaction needs to happen on the teak, not in your bucket or brush. This is also why it’s important to use both part A and B to leave your teak looking a natural golden brown. Once Part B has been rubbed into the same teak as part A, the work is done. Rinse everything off and your teak will look brand new!

If you are seeing a lot of black from the caulk lines from part A. Hose off teak before neutralizing with part B.

Be careful using this product. The acid will burn paint, stainless and other metals if left to dry and not rinsed down with water.

Description

Watco Teak Oil is specifically formulated for dense woods such as teak, rosewood or mahogany. Watco Teak Oil penetrates deep into wood pores to create the rich, warm glow of a hand-rubbed finish. It takes less than an hour to treat your wood with Watco Teak Oil - simply brush or wipe on and wipe off.

Watco Teak Oil can be used on interior surfaces such as furniture, trim, or paneling and on exterior marine surfaces such as outdoor furniture, boat trim rails, and doors. Apply with brush, roller, or spray to dry, finish free wood surfaces. Allow to dry overnight prior to use.
