The Beginnings

World-Class Filipino Boat Builder

CIRILO SALILICAN spent the best years of his childhood on the sea. Coming from a family of fishermen, he was already fascinated with seafaring vessels at an early age, marveling at their seemingly perfect designs to glide and withstand the rough Philippine seas.

This fascination gave birth to his inborn talent that quickly grew into an expertise unparalleled in the boat-building industry. Coupled with his uncanny ability to use mathematical factors, ratios and numbers, he began building exceptionally crafted and durable boats / cruisers, using his own designs and technology, all under his flagship company, CES CRAFT PHILIPPINES.

CES CRAFT PHILIPPINES started as a single proprietorship company way-back 1957. Its reputation as one of the premier and dominant boat-builders in the country was galvanized after entries made by the company started winning international powerboat races in various parts of the world. Clients from the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Japan, Singapore and the USA came to know CIRILO SALILICAN / CES CRAFT and ordered boats of various sizes and classification.

The company became so successful that Cirilo incorporated it in 1975 together with his wife and his children as incorporators. He insisted that his children learn and master the business; after all, it changed their lives for the better, providing comfort and financial security far beyond their humble beginnings. Cirilo made sure that the business remains with his family by imparting the skills, knowledge, techniques and dedication that he acquired thru the years to his children. The children, especially Corazon and Cesar learned so well that at one time Cesar was able to put up his own successful but complementing business boat – building venture. The other children contributed on the administrative and marketing sides of the business.

CES CRAFT = BOAT SHOP = SALILICANS

They are all one and the same!

The Boat Shop Corporation

The Boat Shop Corporation promotes an interactive experience for its clients, allowing them to modify and customize their wanted boats from the drawing board to the construction yard. It believes that customers should always have a say in what they are getting and that the best way to let them realize this is to give them creative control on their purchased boats.

Philippine Boat Builders and Plywood – aesthetic and sophisticated

Well, we all have our expectations … I came to the Philippines for the first time last year – to find an amazing array of indigenous boats – every bay and every village has a different style of boatbuilding.

I was there initially as it is a great hub for cheap flights throughout Asia – so my plan was based on that premise.  Now, I was here on an off for a six month period.

I met with the local Pinoyboats.org group who were tremendously motivated and interested in building wooden boats and productive at it … Wharram Catamarans, B and B ketch dinghies, OzRacers, PDRacers, catamarans, motor boats, skiboats, a daysailing trimaran made of coconut lumber and carbon fibre (a very cool looking beast) and even a Goat Island Skiff.

They are much like other groups that meet on the internet in other countries.  I recommend you look at their website and very active forum and attend their regular events.

We ended up doing a huge number of projects together. Including the amazing Oz Goose group builds now numbering over 100 boats and part of the official racing scene in the Philippines.

One of the first places I jumped to on a $40 Cebu Pacific Air discount fare was Kota Kinabalu in the state of Sabah.  It is KK to the mainland’s KL – it is on the island of Borneo.

Kota kinabalu is the 7th largest city in Malaysia. It is much newer, more planned out and seems to have cracked the problems of other places. Different groups of people manage to get along with little stress. You can see mixed groups walking on the streets in the evening.  Mix of  Malay, Kadazan-Dusan (original inhabitants), Indian background, Chinese background. And a mix of religions – Catholicism, Islam, other christian denominations, Buddhism, Taoism and much much more.

One of my friends there said that part of the reason is that all the kids spend time together. They go to the same schools are invited to each other’s birthdays, sleepovers – all the normal kid stuff.  Everyone is aware of each other’s food requirements so take care to be inclusive.  My best friend there is from the Kadazan people, is catholic, follows all the chinese holidays and feast days, speaks perfect English, Kadazan and Mandarin.

As far as food goes it is an irresistible melting pot of Malay style coconut curries, steamed buns, seafood to die for, roti chennai, Sambals, Roast Lamb with mint sauce and Masala Dosa.  And I’m totally understating it – and there is plenty of vegetarian food too – phew!  Ask the locals what they miss when they travel … FOOD!

So … boats … this is a Maritime city.  The British claimed a base there sometime in the late 1800s. In typical fashion they renamed the village Api Api to Jesselton after the boss guy.  It was chosen because of its strategic access to the Malaysian, Indonesian and Philippines archipelagos.

Sabah itself shares a land border with the Philippines and perhaps the fairest way to describe it is that there was a mixing of peoples from Sabah and the Philippines over centuries.

OK … lets get to the boats.  The best way to introduce them is to show you one of my many walks around the town .. my favourite thing to do when travelling alone. Which is much of the time – I really like being away from hubbub in English – getting lost in exotic syllables.  A small part of the waterfront …

A wonderful little launch

Variety of utility boats

I found out that, on the edges of a new riverside development/gentrification there was a Filipino barangay. And the previous day I had seen a number of boats briefly as I shot above on an overpass.  The houses are on stilts in what would have been a swampy area but my eyes were on the boats.

Boats are my thing and I was pretty keen to see what had been done and offer my opinions … maybe even give a pointer or two.

First I walked along the foreshore … there was a hut on piles in the river with boats moored around.  I could see about 15 local men inside and a new looking boat in the middle … so I walked up.

The story was the boat is a new raceboat – and my idea of offering pointers just vanished when I saw the sophistication of the construction.

It is simple nail and glue but the hullshape is complex. Clearly, the locals well understand using the plywood to absorb the loads and that the timber is there to hold the plywood together. Filipino Boatbuilding in Malaysia!

Plywood was 5mm  Light timber scantlings

One really neat feature is how the bottom ply was joined – a series of steps on the bottom.  It is not enough of a step to be a really stepped bottom. But, a really neat construction solution.  This is an example on another boat.

The other men pointed out the builder and called him the “builder guru”

I asked about power and they pointed to a Briggs and Stratton air cooled motor and introduced me to another man – the “Engine Guru”.   Apparently he gets about 28hp by modding a stock motor. I think the base horsepower was 12, but it might have been 18. He was shy and didn’t want to be photographed.

You sometimes hear one of these go past – they howl like a wild thing.

The boat has a life after racing.  They are used as ferries for paying passengers. The rudder is a simple push pull – often with a hinge so that it can be swung out of the water for net fishing. The prop is taken off too when netting

Walking along the shore there was a bewildering array of different hull styles including this neat Dory powerboat. Internationalism in boat design but I am not sure if it was an example of Filipino boatbuilding.

A cut down dragon boat type shape used (probably briefly :) ) as a powerboat.

A piece of sculpture

You can see the structures from the boats being repaired or abandoned. But alive or dead the boats hint at the diversity of approaches and the experimental ethos of Filipinos.  A creative, can-do, make do with what you have culture.

I was humbled.

A few weeks later I went to Labuan Island – three hours by ferry away. Another former British colony and a place lots of Australians saw action in WW2.  It is now one of the hubs of oil production for Malaysia (and the best Mee Goreng I’ve had for years).

Most of the boats I saw on a driving circumnavigation were a variety of outrigger canoes of about the same size.  Construction was radically different from boat to boat, ranging from dugouts to plywood, timber planked and other materials.

There was one beside this next that had its bow propped up so that water wouldn’t pool in the bottom :)

Additionally there are other rather nice utility boats for outboard power.

Also fast little ferry boats – I really dig the styling – like the hottest modern production powerboats .. .but all plywood!

There are Filipino communities too carrying out modern Filipino boatbuilding methods using plywood.

But something else too.  It was in a Filipino area, but I saw a bigger ice carrying one heading out to the island resorts from KK. Hints of Paraw, but  devoted to motor boat design.

This was inside another Filipino area on the Island – mostly people who had been in Malaysia for a generation or two. So were much more established and part of the general community.

Note the two outboards of differing vintages.  I would be guessing that it starts off with a single outboard. Ten as the family makes more money they get a second outboard … just a guess … or it could just be luck of the draw.

Here is the bigger ice carrying boat, though they used the size above for the same job.

Another shot … that’s not a sleek production fibreglass boat beside it – it is a homemade plywood boat by Filipinos

Sliding ice down the gangplank

I don’t know if these boats are more Malaysian or more Filipino or have some input from other regions.

All in All I was totally boggled by the range of boat types and the sophistication of design and methods.

And not knowing what to do about the dozens more photos I took … we say farewell to Kota Kinabalu and its communities from the region – a picture postcard finish to go with the picture postcard prose.

To return another day

Cruising Catamarans & Trimarans For Sale

cruising catamarans for sale Philippines

Cruising Catamarans For Sale

Cruising catamarans offer possibly the best way to travel among the 7100+ islands of the Philippine archipelago. The shallow draft of most catamarans means they can get you into bays and river estuaries that would not be possible with a conventional sailing yacht.

Other advantages of cruising catamarans are that they typically offer more living space than conventional monohull yachts of similar length, making them also spacious liveaboard alternatives. Plus, they make for more stable platforms for launching and retrieving scuba divers, snorkelers and kiteboarders. This all makes cruising catamarans the perfect boats for yacht charter.

There are cruising catamaran builders in Cebu and Dumaguete that have been building yachts for two decades or more. Mostly these catamarans are built using top-grade marine ply, encapsulated in fibreglass or epoxy, making them easy to maintain. Catamarans and trimarans, built in fibreglass, Kevlar and carbon fibre, are made to special order by specialty boat builders in Subic Bay and Clark.

The only real downside to catamarans is that they are usually cost close to twice the price of a monohull cruising yacht, for the same length overall (LOA). This is also why yacht charter fees are typically higher for catamarans than for monohulls or even trimarans.

Listed here are cruising catamarans (and trimarans) for sale for cruising (and racing) in the Philippines. Many are suitable for longer voyages and some have sailed here from as far away and the U.S.A., Australia and Europe; many are also suitable to be put into service as charter yachts.

Trimarans For Sale

From a usability standpoint, trimarans offer the same primary advantage as catamarans insomuch as they are typically shallow draft and can get you into bay and estuaries that would be off limits for monohull sailing yachts. Trimarans offer the added advantage of being able to "point" (sail closer to the angle of wind) better than catamarans and will frequently get you to your destination faster than either a monohull sailing yacht or a catamaran.

Trimarans have not caught on as fast as catamarans for cruising because they usually do not provide as much living space, being more like a conventional sailing yacht in this respect - with the living area limited to the main hull (the amas typically being used for additional storage space for light but bulky items). However, on many trimarans you will find trampolines between the hull and the amas - great for lazing by the beach and imbibing the beauty of Mother Nature.

There is a trimaran builder in Clark that specializes in the manufacture of trailerable, FARRIER trimarans, which are built under license and exported worldwide.

Most people invest in a trimaran (in preference to catamarans and monohulls) because they enjoy everything else about the sport of sailing but they also want to go fast.

James Wharram Designs

Search Our Site

Professionally built wharrams, a parallel stream of development.

Most of you know us as the producers of quality Polynesian Catamaran designs for the self-builder. We are still very much developing and improving our designs for those who want to self-build their own boat. Over the years however, we have had numerous requests for James Wharram Designs to branch out into producing boats for those of you who want to buy a quality finished boat from a professional builder, rather than build one yourself.

Our franchised builders can build any of our self-build design range, but there now are several special Wharram designs that are only available professionally built - these are exclusive to each builder.

The move into "professionally built" designs required a philosophical analysis on our part, as in the past we have always focused on the Self Builder . We knew that some would accuse us of "moving away from our traditional market" or perhaps "abandoning our principles". Even so, after much soul searching, we decided to proceed. We see it as opening up a parallel stream of development, rather than shutting off our current one. Having a range of professionally built Wharram designs will, we believe, enhance the reputation and value of all our well built designs.

We believe that it is important to have a range of professionally built Wharram catamarans to support the continued development of this type of craft in an increasingly restrictive and bureaucratic building and sailing environment. In so doing, the issue of enforcing high building standards became paramount, so that clients of professional boat builders would be delivered the same quality Wharram boat, or better, as we established with the Tiki 28 and 36 in our professional "Wharram Built" yard in Cornwall in 1987-1992.

Blue Tiki 8m sailed by two people, trees in background

The TIKI 8m, built by BoatSmith in the USA, is an updated, composite fiberglass version of the popular ply-epoxy Tiki 26. With its spacious cockpit and simple, functional interior layout, this versatile, trailable, seaworthy boat is perfect for day sailing, overnight adventures or several weeks of Coastal Trekking. It also makes a good beach charter boat. Can be car trailed.

The Tiki 8m is built in GRP, so cannot be self-built as it requires moulds. BoatSmith have the exclusive rights to build this design.

Tama Moana sailing past a smoking volcano

The 38ft (11.5m) Tama Moana - Child of The Sea is a pure Ethnic Design . Although available for the self-builder, we have included it in this list as its simplicity makes it a very economical boat to have ready-built.

Two Tama Moana designs sailed the Lapita Voyage from the Philippines to Tikopia and Anuta in 2008-9, where they were donated to the island populations who are now using them as their autonomous transport.

Andy Smith Boatworks of the Philippines has the exclusive rights for the building of Tama Moana - Child of the Sea.

Blue and white Pahi 52 gleaming in the sunshine against a backdrop of steep rocks

Many discerning sailors want the PAHI style, 'flexi space' interior layout in a larger craft as well as the comfort of toilets, showers, a deck steering shelter and a galley sufficient for 6-8 people. So, for them we designed the PAHI 52. The Pahi 52 has also been specially adapted as a luxury skippered charter boat for Archipel Club .

From 2014 this design is only available professionally built by Andy Smith Boatworks in the Philippines.

Islander 39

Islander 39 3D drawing

Eco charter catamaran.

A sailor of a certain age will know that with wooden hull(s), canvas sails, natural fibre ropes, at one time, all sailboats were ‘Eco Craft’. Sailors of that era adapted themselves to sailing and living aboard their simple boats.

The Islander 39 is designed to encourage Modern sailors to personally adapt themselves to sailing a simple boat, rather than using large amounts of Energy to adapt the boat to the ‘needs’ of affluent Urban Man.

This design is only available professionally built by Andy Smith Boatworks .

Islander 55

Islander 55 at the beach

The Islander 55 is a smaller version of the islander 65 and is eminently suitable for charter use or as a large ocean cruiser. Her interior can again be simple flexispace, or she can have up to 5 separate double charter cabins.

The Pahi 52 and the Islander 55 and 65 are large designs and we have found from experience that these are frequently too large to self-build within an acceptable timescale. Their sheer size also makes it difficult for just one or two people to tackle the building. For this reason these designs are for professional building only.

Andy Smith Boatworks are the exclusive builders of the Islander 55 design.

The Islander 65 'Vaka Motu' was originally designed in 2000 as an island-hopping cargo/passenger/trading vessel. With her 10 ton load carrying ability, she is also a very suitable vessel for expedition work, charter or as a dive boat.

Her interior can be either simple flexispace with cargo holds, keeping the cost of the vessel down, or with various options of cabin accommodation. With a waterline hull beam/length ratio of 12:1 (11:1 deeply loaded), she will move through the water with minimum wave drag at speeds of 1.50 x vWLL plus, giving easy 24 hours averages of 150 to 200 miles (more if driven in ideal sailing conditions).

Andy Smith Boatworks are the exclusive builders of the Islander 65 design.

Our Professional Builders

We now have two established James Wharram Designs ‘franchised professional builders’ that meet our standards for excellence: Andy Smith Boatworks in the Philippines and Boatsmith, Inc in the U.S.A.

Our professional builders have a close relationship with James Wharram Designs, where we will assist the Wharram boat customer with their choice of design and handle any design queries or modifications. It is seen as a three-way relationship between Designers, Yard and Customer where at the end of the day all three parties are proud of the boat built.

NB. Only Wharram franchised yards have the rights to build Wharram catamarans for the open market. All self-build Plans give the owner/amateur builder the rights to self-build the design and cannot be used by a yard to sell Wharram catamarans without a franchise agreement with James Wharram Designs.

Please note that the franchise agreement for Seascape (Phuket, Thailand) to build Wharram catamarans has now ended. Seascape is therefore not currently endorsed to build Wharram catamarans as part of the JWD professional builder family.

Andy Smith has a long standing relationship with James Wharram Designs, beginning as a JWD apprentice in the 1980s and later becoming manager of the ‘Wharram Built’ Yard in Cornwall (1989), building the Tiki 28 and Tiki 36 designs. Andy has exclusive rights for the professional building of the Ethnic design the Tama Moana (this design is however also available for self-building). The yard also has the exclusive building rights for the Islander 55 and Islander 65 designs, which are only available professionally built.

Andy Smith specializes in ply-epoxy-glass, strip-plank and double-diagonal ply construction methods.

Boatsmith, Inc, Florida, USA

Boatsmith is the newest member of the JWD professional builder family, joining the ranks of franchised builders in 2008 after James and Hanneke met Boatsmith’ owner David Halladay at the 2008 Wooden Boat Show in Mystic Connecticut and were able to personally inspect “Abaco”, Boatsmith’s outstanding example of a Tiki 30 .

In 2009 Boatsmith received the moulds and exclusive building rights for the GRP Tiki 8 Meter .

In 2012 Boatsmith started building moulds for the new Ariki 47. The Ariki 47 is a totally updated version of the Ariki design, built in GRP. Her lines have been redrawn, cabin layout improved and she will have the Wharram Wingsail Rig. A thoroughly modern, fast, sleek catamaran, ideal for Caribbean cruising.
