‍ Key Takeaways

  • There are many sailboats that anyone can build from home depending on tastes
  • Budget will be the biggest deciding factor on a majority of the process
  • Consider kits that come with most of what you need or choose ones that are all-inclusive
  • Design complexities and new materials may make the building time process longer
  • Plan the best you can ahead of time to save money and your working hours

‍ Buying a sailboat can be expensive, but building your own can save you money. So what are sailboats you can build from home?

Sailboats that you can build from home will likely be a small boat under 20 feet. These could be from many different boat suppliers such as B&B Yachts, Brooks Boat Designs, and Chase Small Craft. Boat plans will vary based on your budget and how much time you have on your hands.

Based on my previous experience, building your own boat will take much longer than if a professional were to do it. You also have to be able to study plans, consider various sailboat designs, and have tons of supplies such as fiberglass tape or fiberglass cloth. On top of that, you will also have to be good with your hands.

‍ Top 10 Affordable Sailboats Anyone Can Build at Home

Building your own pocket cruiser or other styles from boat plans is an impressive feat, as this will need dedicated time and money to assure your boat sails safely. Boat building takes a lot of patience as well, especially since this will not be completed in a fast manner.

Finding boat plans and materials that fit your budget will be key to being able to complete the project. The time it takes to complete these projects will vary on your overall experience and needs. Below are 10 of the most affordable sailboats that you can build in the comfort of your home.

B&B Yachts

B&B Yacht

B&B Yachts have 14 different boat plans you can choose from to find the boat of your desires. Their shop is located along the Bay River in North Carolina where they construct all of the kits and have a 100 foot dock to show off your project once you complete it.

One popular model to check out is their Core Sound 15, as it is the perfect size for those wanting to build a modest size boat for a handful of people on board. Their website features some videos of completed projects and the plans or kits for purchase.

  • 14 different models to choose from plus some dinghies
  • Various monohull and multihull options
  • Friendly customer service with attractive prices

They also have a wide variety of other kits in addition to the sailboat, in the event that you wanted to order a small kayak or paddleboard in addition to your sailboat. How Much Does it Cost to Build a Sailboat at Home?

As you have likely already done so, the math between building your own boat and buying one may be a huge difference. Likewise, you may even enjoy the challenge of taking an older boat that is gutted and restoring with parts from a kit to build one new again.

But how much does it cost exactly to build a boat from the comfort of your own garage or workshop? The prices are going to vary dramatically depending on your situation and material needed to get the job done. In addition, the time that it takes to complete this will also vary.

Sail plans are rather inexpensive if you are aiming to build a small boat. These plans allow you to see the workings of the boat design and what you need to build the boat.

Without these plans, you will not know the exact details of the design and it can cause major issues with the boat’s hull or other areas of the boat. Think of these as the backbone or instructions of the boat’s infancy before being built.

Price Per Square Foot

You should assume to pay anywhere between $300 to $600 per square foot if you are interested in building a boat. Buying a kit outright can be a good way to save time, but oftentimes these do not come with everything you need.

Instead, you should try to source as much of the materials at the best price as possible. Thinking ahead is part of the process and you might be able to score a deal at a lumber yard or hardware store for parts.

Boat Designs Matter

The design of the boat will be much different from one boat to the next, regardless if they are the same size in length. If you are pondering boats that range anywhere between 16 and 20 feet, you should factor in the shape of the hull, any rigging, and various appendages.

Prices tend to increase when there are more complexities within the designs. If you are considering a kit with more details than others, you will also have to pay more for the designs on that as well.

Kits Can Differ

It is important to understand that all kits are not going to be the same. As you gander at sailboat kits online to stitch together, you need to thoroughly look over to see if you have everything you need before buying.

It would also be at your advantage to ask the seller if any additional parts or supplies are needed. This may change your dynamic on the kit buying process and you may pass up one for another if it has everything you need. An all-inclusive kit may cost several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars more to have the convenience of everything in the bundle.

Construction Approaches

Some boat plans may require you to have certain tools to get the job done. This means special saws or planers, which the average person simply does not have.

Purchasing specialty tools might be expensive upfront and hard to find depending on what it is. Your best bet would be to check locally for others trying to sell their tools or consider a boat plan that does not require extensive tools to finish the job.

How Long Does it Take to Build a Sailboat?

An easy to build sailboat could take a while to build from scratch. Many different variances come into play that are difficult to pinpoint for everyone. But how long is that exactly and how will your experience play into this?

A fun project to sail in the wind could take you several months to well over a year depending on the boat plan and how big your boat is going to be. In addition, the materials all need to be accounted for prior to starting in the event a hardware store does not have them in stock.

Time Varies

The time that passes for simple boat designs on small sailing vessels can be done in a few weeks. This is assuming you have everything you need and work non-stop around the clock.

Certain complex situations may make the process long, such as the difficulty of working with some materials. If you are a skilled laborer, it may take you half the time compared to a novice. The amount of time it can take will vary on your availability and skill level.

Planning ahead will undoubtedly offer the most time-saving features. It also helps if you can tackle parts of the project at your own pace.

Complexity of Design

The design of the boat may make the construction process longer. For example, it may take you longer to build a catamaran compared to a similar lengthed monohull.

More complex designs might require more materials, therefore making the process a bit longer to complete. Furthermore, you will also need more experience working with difficult designs and that will affect you more as a newbie.

Be sure to manage your expectations well and do not allow yourself to become too stressed over this fun project. If you can, seek expert boat building advice from a local builder or the company you purchased sail plans through.

Quality Materials

The quality of the materials will matter significantly when building a boat and will greatly affect the time it takes to construct it. Handling fiberglass or carbon fiber might require specialty tools, while wood also demands a certain level of craftsmanship.

If you are not skilled at working with the material at hand, it might affect the quality of the build and you may have to go back to fix mistakes. This will definitely add more time to your project, because mistakes are bound to happen with your first project.

To save time, consider adding the tools and materials throughout the year or as often as your budget allows. You may want to try testing your skills on fiberglass or other materials to get a feel for how to work with it.

Sailboat Kits

Many of our sail boat builders don’t realize that we have accessories for the boat they are building. In addition to fastening kits and fiberglass covering kits, we offer Hardware , Rigging and   Sails for many of our sailboat designs. Kits that save you money and eliminate the effort and frustration of trying to find the right materials.

HARDWARE KITS

Hardware kits supply the blocks, gooseneck, eye straps, cleats, gudgeons and pintles, and many other hardware items you will need to make your boat work. Many of these items are difficult to find locally. This is why Glen-L has assembled kits.

RIGGING KITS

The term rigging is often misunderstood by novice sailors. Standing rigging is what holds the spar (mast) up. Our standing rigging consists of high quality stainless steel wire rope with various stainless eyes, jaws, toggles or turnbuckles “swaged” on the ends as required by the design. Swaging is a very strong and clean method of attaching fittings to wire rope. Our Rigging Kits also include the running rigging, the finest polyester yacht braided line, used to control the sails and haul them up the mast.

Our sails come in “classic” white dacron with hand sewn detailing that sets them off from all but the most expensive custom sails. All sails include the Glen-L Logo and a special insignia specific to the Glen-L design as shown in the line drawing.  Why spend your valuable “building” time shopping for a sail maker, only to pay more, when you could order your sails from the people who know the most about your boat?

The only sales I want are ones where the buyer is truly happy and comfortable with their purchase so please feel free to ask for guidance before you buy. I am in my 70s, retired from other successful lines of work. SailboatsToGo LLC is for fun. Started it in 2003.  (Video intro:  )

. See me sail When I get the impulse to be on the lake or bay under sail, I want to just go and be sailing within the hour. When I'm not sailing, I don't want mooring fees, trailer license fees, storage issues, maintenance issues etc. I looked at and rented a Sunfish -- Too heavy on land and it's strictly bathing-suit sailing, which is no good in early Spring or in Fall. I built a plywood sailboat. Too heavy and it required a trailer, annual maintenance, and was not comfortable. I looked at and rented the Escape. Too heavy. Trailer required. Not comfortable, Not dry. At last I bought a sail rig for my canoe. FABULOUS! Roomy, lightweight, dry, comfy, fun to sail. So great, that I wanted to bring the sail rig with me on vacations to the Caribbean. But there are no canoes to rent where we vacationed in the Caribbean. So I made a rig for an inflatable raft, using some parts from the canoe rig and some ingenuity.   The resulting inflatable sailboat worked so surprisingly well, I had to share it with the world...

And in 2003 SailboatsToGo LLC was born!

.  Everything needed to sail is included except wind, water and you! Nothing in our kit is over 4 feet long when folded.  The complete folded kit fits in a bag and the weight of most kits is in the 35 - 45 lb. range.  They fit easily in the trunk of a small car with room to spare and store in a closet or even under a bed!  Our sail rigs are made tough, to stand up to wind, waves, and salt water.  All parts are made from corrosion resistant materials like anodized aluminum, high-performance plastics, and stainless steel.  Many of the boats can be setup for rowing and take gas or electric outboard motors (most require an optional motor mount). Will our rigs work on types of boats not listed on our website? Probably yes! Email [email protected] and tell us what make and model boat you want to sail.

Boat Safely! Learn and follow the rules of safe boating. Don't take foolish risks. Wear life preservers, bring paddles, and boat only when and where conditions are appropriate to your boat and skill level.  Boating has inherent risks of injury or death, that precautions can reduce but not eliminate.  By using our products you signify acceptance of those risks.  Sailing Safety Tips

Our goal is for you to only make simple cuts that can be done with an inexpensive handsaw.

One of our precut kits being packaged. Includes precut plywood, precut timber and the Canoe, sailboat or sailing canoe plans

The only exception to this is that occasionally there is one that has to be cut to fit a special location that just can’t be done ahead of time.  These pieces are cut oversized so they can be trimmed and fit accurately.

We include all the timbers you need to build the boat including any temporary items. Such as spreaders to push the sides of the boat apart while building if required in the plans.

Some of the timbers are cut to length but most are left long for you to cut to an exact fit.

Why Start with a Boat Kit?

boat kits from JO Woodworks can include epoxy and fibreglass as well as precut plywood

You might ask yourself.  Why should I spend the extra money to buy a kit when I can go down to the local lumber yard and get everything I need?

That is a good question so here’s my answer.

The simple answer is,  IT GETS YOU ON THE WATER FASTER.  But three good additional reasons below.

1/ Building a boat from scratch is very rewarding and just plan fun!  There are many out there, however, that have never done any serious woodworking so want a head start so the building goes quickly.

2/ Building a boat is a great family project.  A well thought through boat kit will eliminate all the tedious layout work that makes most children bored and lose interest.

3/ We have already spent the time to tweak the shapes so they fit together properly.   The boats will go together easily and before long you will be painting or varnishing and getting out on the water to use it.

Joining Timber – precut joints and a simple jig to glue up straight.

If pieces need to be scarfed together due to the length we have taken care of that cut too.  A jig for gluing up the scarf joint will also be included in the kit.

Labelling all the Boat Kit Components

All pieces have labels on them so you know what they are.  We also include the dimensions on many of the labels just in case a label happens to separate from the wood during shipping.

Epoxy and Fiberglass

We supply Epoxy and Fiberglass for the comprehensive kit. We can also supply to any level that you want. With or without these items.

Ropes, Fittings and Sails

Our kits are created in a way that they can be shipped by UPS Ground to the lower 48 states.  This saves money and time for you plus eliminates the problem often created by trying to get a large truck to a residence.  Especially if you live in a rural area like I do.

We work with the boat designer for any modifications that this might require from their original plans.

We Supply Plans or you can buy from Duckworks

Plans for most of our boats can be purchased either with our kits or through Duckworks Boat Builders Supply.

We do include information for piece locations to ease your construction.  As mentioned above, we will have fiberglass and epoxy kits for our boats that can be shipped to you or you can order specific items for yourself.

Duckworks is your best source for fiberglass and epoxy as well as various hardware items you may need for your new boat.  Chuck and Sandra are very helpful folks and have built many boats themselves.  So they know what you are accomplishing and will help in everyway they can.

sailboat kit

Designed by Joel White, both of these boats are ideal dinghies for rowing, towing, and sailing.

Included with kit: all the parts to build either the rowing or sailing version. Parts are pre-cut, the stem and center frame are pre-laminated, spars are four-sided and full length (not scarfed),  hull material is Sapele mahogany marine plywood, the building jig is pre-cut and slotted for fast assembly. Plus kits include all hardware, rigging if the sailing kit, epoxy, plans, book, and basic instructions.

These pre-cut kits are shipped from Maryland**, in several large, and heavy boxes, which weigh about 100 lbs each. Box measurements are shown below for the sailing version. You will need to be on-hand for delivery, and you'll want a minimum of two people. Don't count on the delivery driver to be your second person. Kits are typically delivered on big trucks, so if your delivery location is not easily accessible, you'll want to make that is known to us when you order. Be aware: some delivery companies don't like rural driveways or congested suburbs, and may require you to pick-up at their terminal. That happens with a small percentage of shipments.

Kit Prices:

$2500: Nutshell 7'7" Rowing kit and 9'6" Rowing kit, Shellback Rowing Kit

$3000: Nutshell 7'7" Sailing Kit

$3100: Nutshell 9'6" Sailing Kit, Shellback Sailing kit

What is not included with that price: paint, oars, sails, freight

           — Hull  parts / spars are not sold separately —

**SOMETHING ELSE TO CONSIDER: If you are within driving distance of Maryland, you could pick-up the kit and save of the freight costs.

Kit box dimensions and weights are:

98"x30"x2" 90lb

98"x30"x2" 80lb

12' x10"x10" 145lb

When you are ready to pay for the kit, contact us via email: [email protected], or 1.800.273.7447. We will then charge you for the kit, and then get a quote for freight costs. Warning : we are seeing freight fees in the $700 to $1000 range, but it could be more. Once we have that fee, we will ask if you want to continue, and if you do, we will then need to charge you the freight and will ask for that payment (we don't hold credit card info). If you decide to not go through with the kit, then of course we will refund the kit charge. If you continue with the order, we will ship one box with plans, instructions, and some hardware bits  from Brooklin, Maine.  Then, in 3-8 weeks, the actual boat kit ships to you.  Kits ship only within the contiguous lower 48 US states.

Description

Additional information.

Introducing the brand new SCOUT 14 ! By popular request, we've created a new bigger and better version of our crowd favorite 10' Scout dinghy kit. The layout will look familiar, but this time you've got room for a family, bring along the dog, and you'll find even more dry stowage below dck for gear. Though you've now got 14 feet of boat to play with, it's still quite a lightweight boat at around 100 pounds.

Our Founders Build group built the first five Scout 14s at the Northwest Maritime Center in April 2024. We were lucky enough to have Matt from The Duracell Project in the group, building his very own Scout 14 as his tender for Duracell. He documented the entire build over 4 episodes, and it's very worth a watch if you want to see what goes into building this fantastic kit boat for yourself! (Find all four episodes linked in the "Video" tab on this page.)

This complete package includes:

  • CNC cut marine grade plywood and foam parts
  • Epoxy and fiberglass kit
  • Full sailing rig (choose Tanbark or White sail) Sail area is 70 Sq. Ft. or 6.5 Sq. Meters
  • Hardware and deck hatches

Guide to LED Pontoon Boat Lights

  • By Elliott Stark
  • August 20, 2024

Lights on a pontoon boat

Whether on the lake, river or bay, nothing packs a party quite like a pontoon boat. Recent advancements in LED lighting take the pontoon boat party to a whole new level. What follows is our take on dialing in your pontoon boat led lighting setup.

What Lights Does a Pontoon Boat Need?

Like all vessels, the right pontoon boat LED lighting setup involves a combination of lights that you’re required to have and those that make the experience more fun. Whether navigation lights, spreader bars, underwater lighting or light strips around the deck, LED lights are functional, versatile and quite a bit of fun.

OPT7 Aura LED Marine Boat Lights

LED setups offer a number of customization possibilities. For instance, they may be:

  • Dimmable: You can control and adjust the brightness and lumen output via apps on your marine electronics or smartphone.
  • Multi-color changing: The same bulb can produce an incredible variety of colors. Previous lighting options, if they had the ability to change color at all, were extremely limited.
  • Syncable with sound: With the right setup and installation, you can make the lights on your pontoon boat change in brightness and color to music. LED light strips like these are really cool for kids and adults alike.

Lighting for Pontoon Boats: Legal Requirements

The exact lighting setup you will need depends on the length of your pontoon boat. Be sure to check the legal requirements for your situation. The requirements include the number of lights, angle of light emitted, and visible range of the light.

At its most basic, your pontoon boat needs the following:

  • Masthead lights: These are typically white lights that are mounted in a place that is visible to other boats. This base-mounted, fold down LED pole light is a great example.
  • Navigation lights: These are the classic red and green lights mounted on the bow of your boat. In addition to being required by law, they let other vessels know which direction you are traveling at night.
  • Stern lights : You also need stern lights mounted on the back of your boat and an all-around light.

‘Nice-to-Have’ Lights for a Pontoon Boat

Beyond the lights required by law, you can outfit your pontoon with an incredible variety of exciting LED lighting options. Consider illuminating the dock, installing courtesy lights along pathways and steps, and adding submersible underwater LED lights .

You also have many options when it comes to deck lighting. For instance, you can mount a series of recessed LED lights along the walls or beneath the covering boards. You can also mount an LED light strip to run the length of your pontoon boat.

Other great varieties of pontoon boat LED lights include:

  • Spreader lights to illuminate where you’re going
  • Utility livewell lights
  • Tube lights that light the console

Benefits of LED Lights for Pontoon Boats

LED lights for pontoon boats provide a wide ranging number of benefits. They provide a significant energy savings and produce less heat than other forms of lighting.

The primary benefits include:

  • Energy efficiency : LED lights draw less battery power to produce the same number of lumens than do halogen or incandescent lights.
  • Longevity and durability : When properly maintained, LED lights last longer and stand up to the elements. If you do need to replace a bulb, they’re more consistent between lights than other types of lighting.
  • Brightness and visibility : LED lights produce more light in smaller packages than other types of boat lighting.
  • Versatility in color: LED lighting systems allow you to customize the color of your boat’s lighting. You can also control many LED light kits with apps.

TACO Marine T-Top LED Tube Light

Installing Pontoon Boat LED Lights

Just as there are many LED lighting products, you have a range of installation options. Hire a professional, or install them yourself. Integrate all your pontoon boat LED lights into a single circuit, or install and control them individually.

Check out the 2024 Pontoon Boat Buyer’s Guide for some design inspiration. This review of the SunCatcher Elite provides some additional perspective.

Marine Mounting Considerations

Where and how you mount your LED lighting systems depends on your boat’s setup and the look you’re after. You can install a series of individual recessed lights or mount an LED strip on a track .

RecPro 20'-25' Pontoon Boat Under Deck LED Lights

Professional vs. DIY Pontoon Light Installation

Most LED lighting systems are wired into your pontoon boat’s battery system. If you are technical, you may be able to install a new lighting system or modify the one you have.

Professional installation is a great option, too. Professionals understand your boat’s voltage (and can make sure to install the appropriate lights). Most LED manufacturers make them in 12V and 24V options.

How you install LED lights on your pontoon boat also depends on how complex and feature-rich you’d like your system to be. When you start including dimmability and app control, or integrating different LED lighting components, the installation gets more complex.

Maintaining LED Pontoon Lights

When properly maintained, your pontoon boat LED lighting system will last a long time. Clean and dry the lights after use to keep them in ship shape. Make sure that your connections are secure and that the wiring and batteries stay dry.

If you use your pontoon boat in saltwater, take extra care to avoid corrosion. Also, be sure to test your navigation lights before you leave the dock. Being in the middle of the lake at night is no time to find out that your lights are out.

Make a Safe Investment in LED Pontoon Boat Lights

So you’ve got your pontoon boat. You know the many benefits of LED lighting setups. Now it’s time to bring a fully customized, brighter LED setup to the biggest party on the water. Pontoon boats are great. They’re even better with LEDs.

What lights should be on when boating at night?

You’ll need navigation lights (a red and green light on the bow), stern lighting on the back of your boat, a masthead light, and an all-around light. These are the basics, and you can of course add to this.

Where do the lights go on a pontoon boat?

To satisfy the law, you’ll need lights on the bow, on the stern, and atop the console. From there, you could illuminate the deck, any steps, and maybe even beneath the water’s surface under your pontoon boat. Where you place them depends on the design you’re after.

Will lightning strike a pontoon boat?

Any time you are on the water, you should be aware of the weather. If there is lighting in the vicinity, you should consider heading to shore. Lighting can strike boats of all kinds, pontoon boats included.
