The 160-metre yacht BLUE has been given a contemporary exterior and a traditional, fresh interior design, both by Terence Disdale Design. Efficiency and the desire to be as environmentally friendly as possible were key drivers for the technology on board. BLUE is equipped with a highly efficient Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion Concept developed by Lürssen’s own engineering specialists. BLUE also has an electric Azimuth Pod Drive, which in electric mode can be used separately, or when the PTI units are engaged, with the two propeller shafts. In order to generate less noise and vibration and reduce nitrogen oxide levels, BLUE is completed with a state-of-the-art exhaust after-treatment system. Furthermore, the wastewater treatment plant is equipped with new membrane technology that allows the treated wastewater to be safely disposed of in ‘drinking water quality’.

Designed by the highly acclaimed Terence Disdale, Blue has earned its place among the world’s largest yachts with a staggering volume of 15,320 tons.
Although slightly smaller than the illustrious Dilbar, Blue exudes an unparalleled level of sophistication and elegance.
Blue was officially delivered to its owner in June 2022, following a highly anticipated launch earlier in the year.
This magnificent superyacht is a testament to Terence Disdale’s extraordinary talents, as he was responsible for both the yacht’s striking exterior and its sumptuous interior design.

Additionally, the impressive megayacht is designed to house a dedicated crew and staff of 80 members within 40 well-appointed cabins, ensuring an exceptional level of personalized service for everyone onboard.
Blue’s powerful MTU engines propel this incredible motor yacht, enabling it to reach top speeds of over 20 knots. For those who prefer a more leisurely journey, the yacht’s estimated cruising speed is a comfortable 16 knots.
The collaboration between Lürssen and Terence Disdale has redefined the standards of luxury yachting, as Blue’s innovative design and features have captured the imagination of yachting enthusiasts around the world.

Each of the four upper decks offers expansive al fresco entertaining areas, and there is a swimming platform connected to a beach club. Additionally, forward stateroom balconies on either side enhance the onboard experience.
As Blue embarks on its maiden voyage to Malta, the superyacht is poised to make a significant impact on the yachting industry, inspiring future projects to incorporate sustainable technologies and environmentally-conscious design elements. The legacy of Blue will undoubtedly shape the future of luxury yachting, setting a new standard for innovation, elegance, and eco-friendly practices.

By Steph Loseby 7 April 2022
Measuring around 160m (525ft), the luxury mega yacht BLUE has left Lürssen’s facilities in Bremen to begin sea trials.
First hitting the water in February 2022 when she made her way to the Bremen facilities for final fit-out, the superyacht is now heading to the North Sea to start her sea trials.
BLUE boasts an impressive volume of 15,320 GT ranking her the second-largest yacht in the world in terms of gross tonnage. She follows shortly behind superyacht DILBAR , who tonnage wise, is the biggest superyacht ever launched with a total volume of 15,917 GT.
While much of the project is still shrouded in secrecy, we do know that superyacht BLUE features naval architecture by Lürssen and that Terence Disdale Design created her sharp-looking exterior and interior design.
All of the four upper decks feature a sizable alfresco entertaining area and there is also a swimming platform connected to a beach club on board, providing guests with seamless access to the water. Images of the megayacht also reveal a pair of helicopter landing sites; a large helideck at the bow and a smaller helipad aft.
Expected to be completed later this year, her sea trials mark one step closer to her long-awaited delivery.

Lürssen’s 525-foot Superyacht Blue Sets Sail
The gigantic vessel has been designed with sustainability in mind.
By Irenie Forshaw
Lürssen’s sparkling new superyacht, Blue, left the shipyard in Bremen on Saturday, setting sail on her maiden voyage to Malta . Spanning 524.9 ft and weighing in at 15,320 gross tonnes, the gigantic vessel now holds the title of the fifth largest yacht in the world.
But it’s not just size that sets Blue apart in the competitive superyacht sector. The delivery of the ship marks an exciting milestone for the German shipbuilder in its quest to pave the way to a more sustainable future for yachting.
As her name would suggest, Blue has been thoughtfully designed to minimize her impact on the oceans. Lürssen worked with the new owner’s technical project management team for the project, as well as the design team from Terence Disdale , who are the brains behind both the sleek exterior and luxurious interiors.
The new superyacht is fitted with a groundbreaking diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. Developed by Lürssen’s in-house engineering experts, the new technology comprises twin diesel engines that drive two controllable pitch propellers through individual gearboxes.

PTI/PTO units fitted to the gearboxes can be used either for electric propulsion to travel at slower speeds, or for generating electrical energy when the vessel picks up pace. As well as this innovative technology, Blue is fitted with an electric Azimuth Pod Drive, which in electric mode can be used separately, or when the PTI units are engaged, with the two propeller shafts.
These are not token efforts at going green. Rather, Lürssen has spent several years on the project in the hope of inspiring other shipbuilders to create more eco-friendly vessels.

Of course, comfort is also at the heart of the design , and Blue features an exhaust after-treatment system to reduce noise levels and nitrogen oxide emissions. Additionally, the onboard wastewater treatment plant is equipped with new membrane technology that allows treated wastewater to be safely disposed of at what Lürssen describes as ‘drinking water quality.’
All the features you would expect from the planet’s fifth- largest superyacht are present including a pair of helicopter landing sites, a spacious al fresco dining terrace and a swimming platform connected to a beach club. Besides this, very little information about the new vessel is available and images of the interiors have been kept strictly under wraps.

“To execute such a comprehensive project, an excellent team is necessary,” said the shipbuilder’s managing partner, Peter Lürssen. “We are very proud of Blue as yet another statement of Lürssen’s ability and desire to build yachts that meet all of our exacting owner’s requirements, guided by our core focus of expert engineering, beautiful design and being a proud market leader in developing sustainable technologies.”
Lürssen’s Project Blue is only the latest example of its efforts to champion sustainability. At the Monaco Yacht Show last year, the shipyard unveiled Alice : a climate-neutral yacht concept that replaced conventional diesel generators with emission-free fuel cells which generate electrical energy based on hydrogen reformed from green methanol.
While Alice was just an idea, the concept served as an important tool to spark conversations within the yachting industry around how to move toward a greener future. Lürssen is also currently in the process of building its first yacht with fuel cell technology (due for delivery in 2025) which will make it possible to anchor emission-free for 15 days or cruise 1,000 miles at slow speed. Alongside these projects, the German shipbuilder set up an innovation lab to test the installation of a marine hybrid fuel cell system on board a yacht.
Pioneering cleaner energy technologies isn’t the only way Lürssen is striving to reduce its environmental impact. The shipyard also works closely with the Blue Marine Foundation – an organization dedicated to putting at least 30% of the world’s oceans under protection by 2030 while restoring precious marine habitats and tackling unsustainable fishing practices.
In fact, Peter Lürssen personally paid for the operating costs of the Blue Marine Foundation for five years, on top of donating $2.3m to fund a project to create a marine protection area around Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Dr. Contessa Had a “Horrible” Mishap on Below Deck Sailing Yacht That Didn’t Air
Married to Medicine 's Dr. Contessa Metcalfe dished on an unseen moment from her time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.
During the Season 5 premiere of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , Married to Medicine 's Dr. Contessa Metcalfe made a star appearance as co-primary charter guest for the first charter of the season but behind the scenes, things weren't exactly ship-shape during her trip.
How to Watch
Watch Below Deck Sailing Yacht on Bravo on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c and next day on Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo app .
As Contessa revealed in an exclusive interview with The Daily Dish , she had "a bit of a situation" onboard. "My luggage did not come," she said. "It was horrible, [but] everybody was so sweet."
Basically, while Dr. Contessa's entire group made it through their layover, her luggage didn't.
So, to remedy this, she borrowed some clothes and shopped around at some "cutesy little shops close to the pier" to build her vacation wardrobe.
The new Season 5 crew also came in clutch. "Everybody was so nice. They even offered to go out in town and go shopping for me," Contessa shared. "I just have to just sing the praises of everybody."
Chief stew Daisy Kelliher got a special shoutout, too. Why? Because she loaned Contessa her very own skirt. "Daisy was great," the doctor noted. "It was amazing."

Dr. Contessa Metcalfe Shares Big Career News Ahead of Below Deck Sailing Charter: "A Blessing"
"We love to travel in style, so this was absolutely amazing. I've always wanted to go to Ibiza, and I had this belief in my heart that I was kind of approaching the age of being too old to go, so it was nice to kind of be able to do it in an elegant fashion, so to speak," Contessa continued. "Because when we go on vacation, we believe in really letting your hair down."
Because the doctor and her friends live such "buttoned-up" lives at home, they like to let loose on vacation.
"The idea of going to the biggest party place in the world ... I've always wanted to go, but almost felt like I was missing my opportunity. So when this came about, it was like, 'Oh, we've got to do it.' And then to be able to do it on a yacht — a huge sailboat — that's just icing on the cake," she concluded. "And being catered to every moment of every day, it was just an exquisite experience from the moment we stepped on the yacht. It was just luxury, from the beginning to the end."

"The principal purpose of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission [TAIC] shall be to determine the circumstances and causes of [selected aviation, marine, and rail] accidents and incidents with a view to avoiding similar occurrences in the future, rather than to ascribe blame to any person." - TAIC Act 1990
TAIC report - Collision of small passenger ferry and recreational boat
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has published its final report on the collision of a recreational boat with the Blue Ferry in the Bay of Islands on 13 April 2023.
The Commission's Chief Investigator of Accidents, Naveen Kozhuppakalam says the report highlights how vital it is that commercial passenger and all other marine operators have a safety management system that’s fit for purpose.
“Among the risks to passengers that the ferry operator overlooked was the risk of the sole-charge master being incapacitated – which was an unfortunate consequence of this accident,” said Mr Kozhuppakalam.
“The operator’s safety plan also didn’t detail watchkeeping procedures and keeping a good lookout, and it contained ambiguous, irrelevant and inaccurate information.
The report notes that before the accident, regulator Maritime NZ didn’t detect these problems, and that since the accident Maritime NZ has renewed its focus and engaged more deeply with operators on certification and audit of Maritime Transport Operator Plans.
The TAIC report describes how the recreational boat Onepoto collided with the passenger ferry Waitere, known locally as the Blue Ferry. The ferry was carrying 19 passengers from Russel to Paihia when Onepoto impacted Waitere at a right angle near the wheelhouse, causing catastrophic damage to the Waitere, which later sank.
The ferry’s master was seriously injured but its passengers were largely unharmed. There was some damage to the Onepoto but its skipper and passenger were uninjured.
The report shows how no-observance of good watchkeeping practice on both vessels led to the collision.
"Every skipper is human and no skipper can be sure everything is fine on another vessel. When vessels are getting closer, regardless of who should give way, both skippers must look, listen, and think about risk of collision. They must keep doing that until both vessels are getting further apart."
"Almost certainly, neither skipper kept a proper watch. Both did eventually see the other vessel, but too late to take avoiding action," said Mr Kozhuppakalam.
"This was a crossing situation. Onepoto was heading north at about 20.5 knots and Waitere was heading southwest at about 6 knots on the right side of Onepoto, so under the rules, Onepoto should have given way to Waitere.
"Speed is a crucial part of this. Every skipper should ensure their speed gives them time to keep track of the risks and be able to stop in a safe distance if required.
"The Commission found Onepoto was moving at 20.5 knots while its skipper was distracted by an engine alarm. It's important to attend to an engine alarm, but it's more important to avoid a collision. If Onepoto's speed had been appropriately slower it's very likely the collision would have been avoided or its consequences diminished."
There was no need for the Commission to make a new recommendation on the issue of watchkeeping. The regulator Maritime NZ engages in sufficient promotion of good watchkeeping and lookout practices via safety audits, guidance publications, and prosecuting where the rules are breached.
