A BOW MADE FOR AL FRESCO LIVING

The asymmetrical split-level layout of the bow is designed to maximize space for outdoor living. Up top is an ample cushioned sunbathing area while just below is a versatile al fresco lounge-come-dining zone with a six-person table surrounded by an inviting C-shaped divan.

WAVE WATCHING

The helm area is flanked by windows in the hull that sweep up to gunwale level, creating a visual connection with the exterior environment. This exciting design feature also places the pilot right amongst the action, in the heart of the wake at high speeds, with water rushing by on either side almost as though it were part of the boat’s structure.

The high-performance patented Stepped ‘V’ Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) was developed by Michael Peters and incorporates a classic deep ‘V’ hull with two transverse steps and a central tunnel aft. It is this latter feature that sets it apart from other current stepped deep ‘V’s, with its shallow aft central tunnel increasing the longitudinal stability of the boat in high speed turns and adverse situations. The use of the SVVT hull on the Verve 42 represents the merging of cutting-edge hull forms with advanced outboard engine power and avant-garde concept design and styling. The combination of technologies culminates in a boat that boasts unmatchable performance, manoeuvrability and speed in its class and represents the largest and grandest SVVT pleasure boat available on the market.

Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

The Verve 42 can reach a top speed of 43 knots and cruises at 32 knots with three 400 hp Mercury outboard engines. Cleanup begins after yacht goes up in flames and sinks in Marina del Rey

Approximately 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel have leaked from the now sunken boat, by benjamin papp • published september 20, 2024 • updated on september 20, 2024 at 10:48 am.

The United States Coast Guard installed roughly 2,000 feet of boom Friday morning in Marina Del Rey to contain nearly 4,000 gallons of leaking diesel fuel after a yacht fire.

The yacht sank Wednesday night when a powerful explosion engulfed a the large boat in flames with nearly 1,000 rounds of unused fireworks and ammunition on board. Fire crews poured water onto the burning vessel, which was ultimately destroyed and sank into the harbor at 2201 Basin A.

“Our Coast Guard team was able to transition quickly from a fire response to an oil spill response, which allowed us to ensure we had the right people and resources mobilized,'' said Capt. Stacey L. Crecy, the Coast Guard's federal on-scene coordinator. “We were able to deploy containment and collection equipment as soon as it was safe to do so to mitigate the impacts from the discharge of diesel from the vessel after it became submerged.''

The booms were placed around the vessel and affected areas of the harbor. Crews from both the USGC and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will continue to monitor the area until the cleanup is complete. 

In a statement Friday morning the Department of Fish and Wildlife said there are currently no impacts to sensitive environmental sites or species, nor has any oiled wildlife been reported.

The USCG has also partnered with Patriot Environmental Services, Cleans Harbors organization, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s County, and the Oiled Wildlife Care Network.

The spill is not yet a threat to public health, according to USCG.

The fuel spill cleanup operation could take several days. It’s also still not immediately clear when the boat will be removed from the water.

Police responded Wednesday to a report that a boat had run aground at an island on Boston Harbor.

A spokesperson with the Boston Police Department told NBC10 Boston that it is aware of the incident at Rainsford Island.

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard  Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored,  about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.  

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter  of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said. 

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world,  according to  CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters. 

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers  resumed the search for Lynch  and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor. 

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was  acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges  stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to  adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip. 

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a  car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

Man killed in boat crash off Old Saybrook identified, search continues for 2 missing men

Two men are still missing after a boat crash in Long Island Sound on Labor Day that killed one of their friends and a search for the missing boaters is underway on Wednesday.

Nine friends were on the 31-foot motorboat, returning from a day on Block Island, when it hit a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River around 9:15 p.m. Monday, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection EnCon Police.

One person was found dead in the vessel. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has identified him as 34-year-old Christopher Hallahan, of Westbrook.

Six other people who were on the boat were taken to the hospital and one of them is in critical condition, Connecticut Environmental Police Captain Keith Williams said Tuesday morning.

Officials believe that person was driving the boat, but they have not confirmed that. Another of the six people was released from the hospital and two men are still missing.

The capsized boat was recovered from the river on Tuesday and it was pulled from the water around 11:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing, but investigators are looking into darkness and speed as possible factors in the cause of the crash.

The search was suspended around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and resumed at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

Officials from DEEP said that if they do not find anyone on Wednesday, the search will be suspended at sunset and resume on Thursday morning.

Officials have not identified the other people who were on the boat but said they have ties to the local community.

Multiple agencies, including police and fire crews from several nearby towns, the State Police Dive Unit, and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard station on Cape Cod have been involved in the search.

On Labor Day weekend in 2023, four people were hurt in a similar crash. A few weeks earlier, another boat hit the jetty at the mouth of the river and a man was hospitalized.
