About El Toro International Yacht Racing Association
The El Toro class racing dinghy originated in 1939 at the Richmond Yacht Club in California when this new “working man’s yacht club” was looking for a yacht tender and junior training boat. Club members held a series of “Bull Sessions” and set about modifying plans for the MacGregor Sabot published in Rudder Magazine. A prototype was built in a local high school wood shop, and the rest is history. Since then the El Toro has spread across the US and into Canada. Olympians like John Kostecki, Paul Cayard and David Liebenberg began in the El Toro. Active fleets are located in Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, New York and elsewhere. Annual “Bullship” races, iconic events in local racing communities, are held in Hawaii, Sausalito, CA and Amityville, NY.

Top 5 Races at the 2021 El Toro Regatta: Senior Division
Top 6 Races at the 2021 El Toro Regatta: Junior Division
Notes from the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club’s El Toro Regatta
July 30 – August 1
Four days of sailing in Pillar Point Harbor left no doubt that the El Toros wanted more races here. The El Toro is a beloved classic 8’ San Francisco dinghy design from the 1930s “This harbor is perfect for El Toros” stated Senior division winner Gordie Nash. Nash added “ This club ( HMBYC) is a hidden gem and huge overnight success, after 40 years of work.”
The 20 competitors in two divisions were treated to one day of practice and three days of racing in light to moderate winds on the bucolic west end water of the Pillar Point Harbor. The racing was so tight that the top 2 places in both divisions were tied at the beginning of Sunday. The sun came out and warmed up the sailors for the final showdown. Nash sailing Sorcerers Apprentice , pulled ahead of Art Lange in Cygnus to decide 1st and 2nd places in the senior division.
In the Junior division the lounging resident seals barked and stalked Yasmine Kennedy-Crum in Bubbles who won 2 of the last 3 races which raised her score up to finish 3rd overall. Meanwhile Garrett Koontz and Evan Sullivan fought it out behind her for the overall points leader. Koontz triumphed over Sullivan to secure the top honor.
The results of the Regatta are posted on our Racing web page (on our website go to the Sailing > Racing page and scroll down to Past Regattas , open the 2021 accordion and there are links to the results). See some photos from the Regatta at the El Toro International Yacht Racing Association website.

About El Toro International Yacht Racing Association. The El Toro class racing dinghy originated in 1939 at the Richmond Yacht Club in California when this new “working man’s yacht club” was looking for a yacht tender and junior training boat.
Please consider joining the El Toro International Yacht Racing Association ($25 annually) and support the El Toro class. We encourage anyone with an interest in El Toro's to join. This is a great way to connect with El Toro sailors everywhere.
profile of El Toro International Yacht Racing Association from the Yearbook of International Organizations, a service of the UIA.
The Regatta is open to any member in good standing of the El Toro International Yacht Racing Association (ETIYRA) who is a member, or dependent of a member, of a Club affiliated with US Sailing or World Sailing.
3.1 The regatta is open to all boats of the El Toro Class. Eligible boats may enter by completing the Bullship Entry Information at the Registration Desk on the day of the Regatta. Duplicate sail numbers will NOT be accepted .
Over the decades, some 12,000 hull numbers have been issued by the El Toro International Yacht Racing Association (ETIYRA). The only problem with this state of evolutionary perfection is a brick-shaped disruptor from Florida called an Optimist Pram, aka the Opti.
The results of the Regatta are posted on our Racing web page (on our website go to the Sailing > Racing page and scroll down to Past Regattas, open the 2021 accordion and there are links to the results). See some photos from the Regatta at the El Toro International Yacht Racing Association website.
