The U.S Coast Guard rescued four Canadians after their catamaran capsized about 140 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, officials said.

At 12:18 p.m. on Saturday, the Coast Guard 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, received an emergency signal from the Moon Dragon, a 60-foot catamaran that charters between the Mid-Atlantic and the Virgin Islands, the USCG said in a news release .

An airplane crew flew to the scene and spotted the overturned catamaran and a covered life raft with four people inside, according to the Coast Guard.

Footage of the rescue shows a Coast Guard crew hoisting a person from the rough waters onto their helicopter.

All four people aboard the catamaran were airlifted and then taken to Air Station Elizabeth City before they were transferred to a local hospital, the Coast Guard said. None of the passengers were injured, according to the Coast Guard.

The catamaran crew said that, while at sea, both their port and starboard side hatches broke, leading to flooding that forced them to abandon ship, the Coast Guard said.

"The survivors in the raft used a radio to contact the overhead HC-130 crew and request assistance," the Coast Guard said.

Operations unit controller Petty Officer First Class Austin Lang said the rescue mission was a success because the catamaran crew was prepared with an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, a proper radio, and a functional life raft.

"The ocean is unpredictable and unforgiving, and this case represents perfectly the value of being prepared at sea," Lang said in a statement.

"These sailors had the right gear on board, it worked, they knew how to use it, and it's because of that we were able to find them and bring them home safely," he added.

The catamaran was left partially submerged in the strong winds and high waves. The Coast Guard said they issued a navigation hazard to mariners in the area.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four Canadian mariners on Saturday after their luxury yacht the Moon Dragon capsized about 140 miles from Wilmington, North Carolina.

On Saturday afternoon, around 12:18 p.m., the Coast Guard Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia received an emergency signal from the Moon Dragon, a yacht that charters between the Mid-Atlantic and the Virgin Islands, USCG said in a new release .

A rescue operation was immediately launched and when rescue teams arrived on scene, they spotted the overturned 60-foot catamaran and a covered life raft. All four passengers were found safe and uninjured in the raft, said the USCG, adding that they had used a radio to contact and request assistance.

A Jayhawk helicopter was sent from Elizabeth City, North Carolina to retrieve the stranded mariners. Once on scene, the Jayhawk crew safely hoisted all four people aboard and took them back to Elizabeth City, where they underwent medical assessment.

Video footage from the rescue shows a crew member pulling up a passenger on a "basket" back to safety.

What happened to the Moon Dragon?

The rescued mariners said that their vessel's port and starboard side hatches broke causing water to enter the catamaran and cause catastrophic flooding, which forced them to abandon ship. Winds were reported to be at 35 mph and seas at 11 to 12 feet.

USCG said that the Moon Dragon remains partially submerged and that the Coast Guard is "issuing a hazard-to-navigation" safety broadcast to notify mariners transiting in the area.

Being prepared on sea

“The ocean is unpredictable and unforgiving, and this case represents perfectly the value of being prepared at sea,” said Petty Officer First Class Austin Lang, said in a statement.

Lang emphasized the importance of the Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon (EPIRB) – devices that alert rescue authorities and indicate your location – a proper radio, and a functional life raft in saving the catamaran's passengers and ensuring the success of the rescue.

“These sailors had the right gear on board, it worked, they knew how to use it, and it’s because of that we were able to find them and bring them home safely,” said Lang.

What is the Moon Dragon?

The Moon Dragon is a charter catamaran, which is a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size. Moon Dragon has six luxury cabins with room for 10 passengers, according to Ocean Getaways , a “boutique” yacht charter company.

The luxury yacht boasts natural teak hardwood flooring, quartz walls in the shower, several fridges and freezers, ice makers, lounging areas, and multiple entertainment options. Prices started at $58,000 per week, according to Ocean Getaways.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WTVD) -- The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the rescue of four mariners off the coast of North Carolina near Wilmington on Saturday.

According to a news release from the agency, a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City successfully rescued the four Canadian sailors after receiving a signal from an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) around 12:18 p.m. The alert was from the Moon Dragon, a luxury sailing yacht that charters between the Mid-Atlantic and the Virgin Islands.

The Coast Guard then launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City and directed them to the area. The dispatched crew spotted the overturned vessel and a covered life raft. The survivors in the raft used a radio to contact the overhead HC-130 crew and request assistance.

The Jayhawk crew safely hoisted all four off the raft and airlifted them to Air Station Elizabeth City. They were treated by Pasquotank-Camden EMS. No injuries were reported. The catamaran crew told the Coast Guard that both their port and starboard side hatches broke on the 60-foot catamaran leading to catastrophic flooding which forced them to abandon ship around noon.

"The ocean is unpredictable and unforgiving, and this case represents perfectly the value of being prepared at sea," said Petty Officer First Class Austin Lang, operations unit controller.

The Moon Dragon remains partially submerged and the Coast Guard is issuing a hazard-to-navigation safety broadcast to notify mariners transiting in the area.

"These sailors had the right gear on board, it worked, they knew how to use it, and it's because of that we were able to find them and bring them home safely," Lang said.

The CG 47258 and CG 47251 responded, with the 47258 directly responding to the distressed mariners and the 47251 conducting a bar standby to ensure the safety of the entire evolution. Due to the weather conditions, the mariners anchored the CATALYST outside of the Oregon Inlet Bar and the crew of the 47258 recovered the 4 mariners after they abandoned ship. Midway through the evolution, the anchor line snapped and the CATALYST rapidly began drifting onto the bar.
