Genoa Boat Show 2024: useful information

The Genoa Boat Show is an international nautical fair that takes place in Genoa in September and attracts thousands of sea enthusiasts every year.

Here, it is possible to admire the most beautiful boats in the world .

In addition to exhibiting boats, the Boat Show hosts journalists from all over the world, who aim to promote Italian companies abroad (ICE Agency ).

Let’s find out together all the information you will need to plan a visit to the Genoa Boat Show .

When the Genoa Boat Show starts

The Genoa Boat Show 2024 will be held from 19 to 24 September 2024 from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm.

It starts on Thursday and lasts 6 days .

Where the Genoa Boat Show takes place

Genoa Boat Show takes place in Piazzale Kennedy 1 , in the Foce district, i.e. between the city centre and the Corso Italia sea promenade .

Visitors will be provided with an interactive map , indispensable for finding their way around the boat show, which covers an area of 200,000 square metres (wi-fi is free).

How the Genoa Boat Show is organised

Genoa Boat Show is divided into five areas : Tech Trade , the show devoted to accessories, Sailing World , the sailing boat show, Boating Discovery , the outboard boat show, Yacht and Superyacht , the show hosting luxury boats, and Living the Sea , the show for sea enthusiasts.

Then there is the Forum area , where the Nautical Fair conferences are held, and refreshment areas located at various points.

Levante Waterfront Area

Thanks to the Levante Waterfront redevelopment project by world-famous Genoese architect Renzo Piano , the boat show area will be enlarged.

The works, which started in 2020 , are expected to be completed in 2024 with the opening of the car park located below the Palasport , which will be directly connected to the Boat Show .

How much does the ticket for genoa boat show cost.

Tickets for Genoa Boat Show can be purchased online on the official website and cost €23.00 (€ 1.00 advance sale fee).

Tickets will be available from June 2024 – Go to the official website .

The ticket is nominal and is only valid for the day of the exhibition visit.

Accompanying persons of visitors with disabilities get in free of charge.

Info for visiting the Genoa Boat Show with children

Children up to 12 years of age enter for free .

Nursery areas for changing babies are located at different points of the fairground (on the map, they are indicated as fashion toilets ).

How to get to the Genoa Boat Show

Arriving by car.

From the A12 motorway, take the Genova Est exit and follow the signs for the boat show (about 3 kilometres, you will pass through the centre of Genoa ).

From the A26 motorway , on the other hand, take the Genova Ovest exit (about 6 kilometres, in this case you will pass through the Porto Antico of Genoa ).

Arriving by train

The nearest railway station is Genova Brignole , which is 1.4 kilometres from the boat show.

Arriving by bus

From the Genoa Brignole railway station , you can take bus No. 31 and get off near the fairground, in Piazzale Kennedy .

There are also shuttle buses , i.e. free shuttles available to Boat Show ticket holders.

The Genoa Boat Show , on the other hand, provides the Shopping Bus , a transport service for the Show’s guests and operators, available every half hour .

Arriving by plane

Genoa Cristoforo Colombo International Airport is 8 kilometres away from the Boat Show.

Where to park to go to the Genoa Boat Show

The closest car park to the fairground is located right in front of the entrance , and is the one in Piazzale Kennedy .

The flat rate is 23.00€ per day (1€ quote) .

Parking can only be purchased after purchasing the Boat Show entrance ticket .

Alternatively, you can park your car in the areas surrounding the fairgrounds , again at a flat rate of 23.00€ (1€ quote) .

If, on the other hand, the idea was to arrive by car and then travel by public transport , there are a number of interchange zones where you can leave your car, at a more convenient price .

These are Piazzale Marassi (at the Genoa East exit) and Via Bruno Buozzi (Park Dinegro, at the Genoa West exit).

Where to sleep near the Genoa Boat Show

Where to eat near the Boat Show

In addition to the refreshment areas inside the structure, there are some small restaurants around the boat show that are worth trying.

Osteria della Foce – In Via Ruspoli, it offers traditional Genoese dishes of both land and sea (average price, around €30.00 per person).

Ostetrattoria – In via Rimassa, mainly fish menu. The crudo and cappon magro are very good (medium-high prices).

Ristorante Santa Monica – In Corso Italia, a refined fish restaurant with a fantastic view of the sea. Here too, prices are high but in line with the quality of the catch.

Dogs , if provided with a muzzle and leash, may enter the Show .

For those who have the curiosity to go on one of the boats on display at the Boat Show, it may be useful to know that it can be done by appointment .

You can phone the boatyard or make an appointment in person during the visit.

A bit of Boat Show history

The Boat Show was born in Milan in 1961 under the name of Salone Internazionale della Nautica .

The following year, it was moved to Genoa and took its current name.

Initially, the exhibition area covered 30,000 square metres and hosted 430 exhibitors , both Italian and foreign.

The entrance ticket cost 250 lire .

Year after year, the Genoa Fair became the reference point of the international boating industry.

A prestigious event that no shipyard could miss .

Today, the Genoa Boat Show covers an area of 200,000 square metres and hosts more than 1,000 boats.

The Boat Show is a unique event in the world and is increasingly focused on making Genoa the city of boating.

The third edition of “ Sea You – Yacht Sales & Charter Days ” is scheduled for 18 and 19 April 2024 at Marina Genova, a reference point for great international yachting and a hub for yachts and mega yachts in the heart of the Mediterranean. MYBA Charter show returns to Genoa for 2024

The Worldwide Yachting Association has announced the MYBA Charter Show is to move back to Genoa, Italy for its 34th Edition next year.

The show, which has been hosted in Barcelona for the last 5 years, will temporarily return to its original location at the historic Marina Molo Vecchio in Genoa for 2024. Under a temporary one-year agreement, the Italian port will serve as an interim solution until a decision can be reached with regard to the show’s future location.  

Annually attracting more than 2,000 industry professionals, brokers and influencers, the MYBA Charter Show is a mainstay fixture in the yachting calendar, offering a prime opportunity to get an up-close encounter with some of the most iconic luxury charter yachts  on the market.

Organized by MYBA, the show is a shining example of the association’s dedication to setting, promoting and upholding high standards across all realms of the superyacht industry.

Ignacio Erroz, CEO of Marina Port Vell Barcelona, confirmed that it had “been a pleasure to host the MYBA Charter Show, for five editions, in our facilities,” before adding the show had also helped to reinforce Barcelona as a superyacht destination, as well as boost the local economy and create greater opportunities for the industry as a whole. 

Meanwhile, Raphael Sauleau, MYBA vice president and AYSAS chairman, expressed their “heartfelt gratitude to the team at Marina Port Vell Barcelona for their dedication and efforts in hosting the MYBA Charter Show over the past years. Under Ignacio Erroz's leadership, the team's passion, professionalism, and commitment to excellence, have made the Shows unique experiences irrespective of the post pandemic challenges.” 

The two marinas are working closely with each other to ensure a smooth transition for all parties involved.

It has been announced this week that the 34th edition of the MYBA Charter Show in 2024 will take place at the Marina Molo Vecchio in Genoa . This signals a change after five years of successful events held in Barcelona .

Ignacio Erroz, CEO of Marina Port Vell Barcelona will be sorry to see the event move on, but had this to say, “The success achieved during the years that the show was held in Barcelona reinforced our city’s position as one of the main destinations for superyachts, opening a wide range of opportunities for the industry, boosting the local economy and providing added value to Barcelona.”

There is only an agreement in place for the show to relocate to Genoa for 1 year, with the MYBA Board due to clarify the future location of the show soon. The event brings together a curated fleet of superyachts and a highly qualified audience and paves the way to a successful charter season.

Genoa is a port city and the capital of northwest Italy’s Liguria region with a long history in maritime trade over many centuries. We look forward to visiting next year and bringing you all the highlights from the show.

One person has died and six are missing after a superyacht capsized off the Sicilian coast in the Mediterranean on Monday at about 5am (03:00 GMT) after it was hit by stormy weather caused by a “waterspout” – or mini tornado – according to Italian authorities.

The cruise had reportedly been undertaken to celebrate the acquittal of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , who has been missing, in a fraud trial in the United States in June.

Here’s what is known so far about the yacht, those on board and who died or are missing.

Who was on the superyacht which sank?

According to the Italian coastguard, the 56-metre-long (184 feet) British-flagged yacht, called the Bayesian, was carrying 22 people, including 10 crew members.

One person has been confirmed dead after rescuers located a body on Monday at a depth of about 50 metres (164 feet), the AFP news agency reported. Officials have not yet given the name of the deceased but Italian media reported that he was the yacht’s chef.

AFP reported on Tuesday that divers had spotted a second body inside the sunk boat, quoting a source close to the search operation. Authorities have not confirmed it yet, though.

While not all the names of the six missing passengers have been made public officially, they are understood to include:

• Mike Lynch, 59, a British-Irish technology businessman who co-founded British tech company Autonomy in 1996 and was once likened to Microsoft founder Bill Gates; he earned a PhD from Cambridge University
• Hannah Lynch, 18, Mike’s daughter, who had just completed her final school exams and was due to begin a degree in English at the University of Oxford this September
• Jonathan Bloomer, the 70-year-old British chairman of Morgan Stanley bank and the Hiscox insurance company, was confirmed as missing by Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain
• Judy Bloomer, Jonathan’s wife, was also confirmed as missing by Hussain
• Chris Morvillo, from British international law firm Clifford Chance, was confirmed to be missing by Salvatore Cocina, head of the Civil Protection in Sicily

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, were rescued. Among others rescued were Charlotte Golunski, 36, a board director at Luminance, a software startup founded by Lynch; her husband, James; and their one-year-old daughter, Sophie. Golunski is understood to have kept her daughter alive by holding her above her head while she was in the water.

All those rescued are in stable condition, although eight of them have been hospitalised, according to Italian news agency Adnkronos.

What do we know about the Bayesian?

Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi constructed the superyacht in 2008 and refitted it in 2020, according to the company’s website.

The yacht’s owner is listed as Revtom Limited, a firm solely owned by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, according to company documents seen by the Reuters news agency.

It was formerly called Salute but was renamed Bayesian after Lynch’s PhD thesis and his software that earned him a fortune. Both of these were based on the statistical Bayesian theory, championed by mathematician Thomas Bayes.

Where was the Bayesian last seen and where was it going?

The Bayesian was last located on Sunday evening in the Tyrrhenian Sea, east of the harbour at Porticello, according to ship tracking websites Vessel Finder and Marine Traffic.

Porticello is a port city located near the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

The yacht had departed on August 14 from the Sicilian port of Milazzo. Its destination was reported to be the Italian city of Bagheria by the tracking websites.

Did a waterspout cause the yacht to sink?

Italian authorities reported that the stormy conditions that caused the yacht to sink were triggered by a waterspout.

A waterspout is a rotating column of whirling air and water mist – sometimes referred to as a mini tornado – according to the website of the US National Ocean Service.

The website adds that a tornadic waterspout is a tornado that forms over water or moves from land to water. They are similar to land tornadoes and can occur during thunderstorms.

Who is Stephen Chamberlain and how is he connected to this case?

Chamberlain, 52, was Lynch’s co-defendant in a fraud trial in San Francisco, which saw both men acquitted in June.

Chamberlain died in a hospital from injuries sustained when he was hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, on Saturday. His death was confirmed by his lawyer Gary Lincenberg in a statement on Monday.

The fraud case related to Hewlett Packard’s $11bn acquisition of Autonomy, the firm Lynch grew into the UK’s leading tech company before it spectacularly unravelled after being bought by HP in 2011.

Lynch was extradited to the US in May 2023 and he spent more than a year under house arrest before his acquittal. Chamberlain was the former vice president of finance at Autonomy.

The yacht trip was supposedly a celebration of Lynch’s acquittal.

What’s next for the search and rescue operation?

Specialist divers began a search anew for the six missing people on Tuesday. Three divers, equipped with oxygen cylinders, descended beneath the surface to examine the wreck.

They initially faced difficulty accessing the yacht’s chambers because they were constricted by furniture.

An investigation into the wreck has been opened by prosecutors in the nearby Sicilian town of Termini Imerese.

What have survivors and witnesses said about the incident?

“It was terrible. The boat was hit by really strong wind and shortly after it went down,” survivor Golunski told the ANSA news agency.

She added that she had lost hold of her one-year-old daughter in the water for “two seconds”, but then managed to grab her and hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety. She reported that people were screaming.

Karsten Borner, a captain of a nearby yacht who witnessed the sinking, said he had turned on the engine of his ship to prevent collision with the Bayesian. “We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone,” he told reporters.

Bloomer’s wife, Judy, is a trustee of the Eve Appeal, a UK-based gynaecological cancer research charity. Athena Lamnisos, the CEO of the Eve Appeal, was quoted by the BBC saying she was “deeply shocked to hear the news that our very dear friend and her husband Jonathan, are among those missing”.

Six people are missing, including a man dubbed the British Bill Gates, after a luxury yacht sank off the Sicilian coast.

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch — freshly acquitted from a decade-long trial — had invited his work colleagues aboard a trip through the Mediterranean coast when a freak storm saw the yacht sink within moments.

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking vessel. The search for the missing continues.

Here's what we know so far: 

What happened?

The Italian coastguard said the yacht — the Bayesian — was anchored off the shore of port city Porticello, near the Sicilian capital Palermo, when it was hit by bad weather sometime after 4am on Monday, local time. 

Eyewitnesses said it vanished quickly beneath the waves shortly before dawn.

Managers of the sailing vessel Bayesian, Camper & Nicholsons, confirmed to the ABC that the Bayesian encountered severe weather and subsequently sank. 

"Our priority is assisting with the ongoing search and providing all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew," they said. 

"The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude," a coastguard official told Reuters.

Sicily's civil protection agency head, Salvo Cocina, said a waterspout — a tornado over the water — could have struck the yacht.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Mr Cocina added. 

Storms and heavy rainfall had swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, lifting the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea to record levels and raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts told Reuters.

"The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost 3 degrees more than normal. This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," meteorologist Luca Mercalli said.

Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell vessel told journalists he noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm, but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realised the ship had simply disappeared.

Mr Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Search crews, including helicopters and divers, are continuing to search the wreckage, lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Specialist divers reached the ship on Monday but access was limited due to objects in the way, the fire brigade said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment.

The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families".

Sicilian prosecutors have also opened an investigation into the event. 

Who is missing?

There were 12 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the yacht. 

Mr Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries, including Britain, the United States, Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.

Of the 22, one man is confirmed dead and another six people are still missing. 

They are believed to be inside the hull, fire rescue spokesperson Luca Cari said.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman who said he responded to a flare from the vessel but found it sunk, said he stayed at the site for three hours without finding anyone.

"I think they are inside, all the missing people," he said.

Rescue teams recovered the body of the yacht's onboard chef on Monday, identified as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

The still missing people include: 

• Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah 
• Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of global financial services company Morgan Stanley International
• Chris Morvillo , a lawyer at the British multinational law firm Clifford Chance. He worked on Mr Lynch's lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard
• The identities of the remaining two missing are still unconfirmed

Who was rescued? 

Fifteen people escaped from the sinking ship. 

Eight have been hospitalised and others were taken to a nearby hotel.

Among those rescued were:

• Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who was the owner of the yacht
• Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter, Sofia. Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm, Invoke Capital. She says she momentarily lost hold of Sofia in the water but managed to hold her up above the waves until the lifeboat was inflated
• Ms Golunski's husband James Emslie
• New Zealand captain of the yacht James Catfield. He told Italian newspaper La Repubblica the crew didn't see the storm coming
• A lone Dutch citizen was identified by the Dutch foreign ministry as being rescued, but was not identified

Who is Mike Lynch?

Mr Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was recently freed from a Silicon Valley lawsuit that tarnished his legacy. 

The 59-year-old Cambridge-educated mathematician created Autonomy , a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. 

He received the OBE for his innovation in 2006. 

He then sold the software to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $US11 billion ($16 billion) in 2011, with Mr Lynch personally netting $US800 million. 

HP valued Autonomy at $US46 billion ($68 billion) in the months leading up to the deal.

But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of forging the software's financial records to make the sale.

As part of a decades-long legal battle against HP, Mr Lynch was extradited to the UK on criminal fraud charges. 

He steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling. 

He was eventually cleared of all charges in June this year. 

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a bill from a civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $US4 billion. 

Following the San Francisco trial, Mr Lynch said he would return to the UK and do what he loved most: "[being with] my family and innovating in my field."

The holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Mr Lynch's acquittal, with guests including some of the people who had stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal.

In a separate act of tragedy, Mr Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died on Monday, after a road accident left him critically injured.

Mr Chamberlain — Autonomy's former vice-president of finance alongside Mr Lynch — was hit by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and had been placed on life support. 

What is the Bayesian?

The luxury yacht is 56m long sailboat, with a 75m mast labelled as the tallest aluminium mast in the world.

It was previously named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and a crew of 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. It was last refitted in 2020.

Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $AU 321,000) a week.

The ship also won a string of awards for its design. 

Ms Golunski said the yacht had travelled through the Aeolian Islands, Milazzo and Cefalù before sinking. 

It is likely the yacht's name would resonate with Mr Lynch because his PhD thesis and the software that made his fortune was based on Bayesian theory.

Six people remain missing after a luxury superyacht sank off the coast of Palermo in Sicily, Italy on Monday, including British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Lynch, 59, was aboard the Bayesian, an 184-foot-long British-registered sailboat that sank into the water right before sunrise. While six individuals are missing — including American, British and Canadian nationals — one person has been confirmed deceased from the sinking that capsized the yacht's 22 passengers, Italy's coast guard said in a statement.

Of the 15 rescued passengers, eight were taken to a local hospital for treatment and were in stable condition, CNN reported. A 1-year-old was among those rescued. The large vessel sank after heavy rainfall from strong storms caused flooding and landslides in parts of Italy.

Prosecutors in a town near Palermo have since opened an investigation into the events leading up to the sinking, which may shed some light on why Lynch was aboard the superyacht. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was one of the rescued passengers, the BBC reported.

What companies did Mike Lynch found?

In 1996, Lynch co-founded the Autonomy Corporation, an enterprise software company now known as HP Autonomy. He also founded Invoke Capital , a venture capital fund.

Through Invoke Capital, Lynch became a co-founder of Darktrace, a British cyber security company established in 2013 and headquartered in Cambridge, England.

Why was Mike Lynch charged with fraud?

Soon after Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion in 2011, a sale in which he made around $800 million, he was hit with civil and criminal charges.

In November 2012, HP announced an $8.8 billion writedown of assets and claimed Autonomy artificially inflated its value by hiding "serious accounting improprieties, disclosure failures and outright misrepresentations," the Guardian reported.

Although the UK Serious Fraud Office ended its investigation of the sale due to insufficient evidence, Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, former vice president of finance at Autonomy, were indicted for fraud in the U.S. in November 2018. Sushovan Hussain , Autonomy's former finance chief officer, was found guilty of fraud in 2018 and sentenced to five years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California .

HP won a civil action in the High Court in London in January 2022 against Lynch and Hussian, the BBC reported. Damages were to be decided later, with the judge saying the amount would be "significantly less" than the $5 billion claimed by HP, according to the outlet.

Was Mike Lynch found guilty?

Lynch was extradited to the US in May 2023 to face 16 counts of wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy. He and Chamberlain, who was charged with 15 counts of wire fraud and conspiracy, pleaded not guilty.

On June 6, 2024, the men were found not guilty of all charges.

Lynch told BBC Radio 4 in August that although he knew he was innocent at the onset of this 11-week trial, he felt his wealth allowed him to prove his case in U.S. court.

"You shouldn't need to have funds to protect yourself as a British citizen," he said.

Stephen Chamberlain on life support

On Saturday, two days before Lynch's disappearance, Chamberlain was seriously injured in a road accident, Reuters reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Chamberlain was struck by a car in Cambridgeshire on Saturday morning and was placed on life support, the person said, per Reuters.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco said it has developed a plan to enter the wreckage of the yacht.

Nineteen divers have been going down in groups of three and attempting to open a passage at the stern, La Republicca reported.

This involves breaking through a glass window in the lounge area of ​​the main deck to access the interior of the 56-meter yacht.

But efforts to reach the cabins are still obstructed by a "world of objects", fire department diver Marco Tilotta told Reuters news agency.

"So, getting inside and descending into the compartment below from the stairs that are narrow and going into all of the cabins is a really hard and difficult job.

"We are not stopping. We have resources, manpower and means."

The Italian coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

That the vessel sank at speed and remains intact on its side "could favour the formation of small air pockets inside", said Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer of mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University.

"This is obviously highly speculative and impossible to predict accurately."

Jeremy Bloomer, the twin brother of missing Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, told the BBC his fingers were crossed.

"It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed."

David Tabizel, who established software company Autonomy with missing British tycoon Mike Lynch, told Sky News: "I'm just heartbroken for him and his family and I hope there's a miracle about to occur.

"If anyone has the resilience to survive this - he does. And I hope he's found an air pocket."

Dr Souppez said a sign the rescuers may be looking for is a "banging noise at regular intervals".

"This is common practice on submarines and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year."

Yesterday, Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian coastguard said the missing were unlikely to be alive.

"Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not."

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Bayesian shipwreck, as the search for six missing tourists, including four Britons, enters its third day.

Still unaccounted for are British tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Divers spent Tuesday struggling to enter the cabins of the superyacht on the seabed off the Sicilian coast, after confirming the bridge was empty.

Italian authorities said their working theory is the missing are still inside the boat, as search crews cut a hole in the hull in an attempt to gain access.

An engineer who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia in 2012 warned rescue divers entered a "critical" 24 hours yesterday.

The coastguard confirmed a body found after the yacht sank yesterday was that of chef Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan national who was working on the Bayesian superyacht.

And the captain of the Bayesian spoke for the first time on Tuesday, saying of the storm: "We didn't see it coming."

Images are emerging of emergency crews working near the site where the yacht sank in Porticello.

Search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results and experts have said we are in a "critical" 24 hours.

Bayesian was moored around half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at around 5am local time yesterday.

A friend of Recaldo Thomas, the chef who was killed as the yacht sank, has described him as a "calm spirit" who had a "smile that lit up the room".

Gareth Williams, who grew up with Mr Thomas in Antigua, told the BBC : "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.

"He would come over to mine over the weekend and he would sing. He had the deepest, most sultry voice in the world, and a smile that lit up the room.

"He told me just the other day that he needed to work two more seasons to fix up his late parents' house. He loved yachting, but he was tired."

Mr Thomas was also a Canadian citizen. The country's foreign ministry said it was "aware of reports that a Canadian citizen has died" and that consular officials were in contact with local authorities.

Mike Lynch "lost the last 12 years fighting a ridiculous case", his co-founder has told Sky News.

David Tabizel, who founded the software company Autonomy with Mr Lynch - the sale of which became the subject of the US fraud case - said he was a "legend" and that he had a "very soft spot for him".

"I'm just heartbroken for him and his family and I hope there's a miracle about to occur," he said.

Mr Tabizel said Mr Lynch's "resilience" and "importance to British economy cannot be overstated". 

"Now he has passed through this great trauma we were hoping he would lead a new national revolution to help Britain out of its current moribund state," he said.

Mr Tabizel added: "He has been one of the most influential, intelligent and most honourable human beings I have ever had the honour of knowing."

Mr Lynch sold Autonomy to US computing giant Hewlett-Packard for $11bn (£8.6bn).

He was accused of conspiracy and attempted fraud over the sale to HP and an intense, multiyear legal battle in the US ensued.

He was acquitted of multiple fraud charges in June after more than a year under house arrest.

CCTV footage showing the yacht moments before it sank has been released.

We reported on separate footage earlier, shot from a villa 200m away from the site of the disaster in Porticello.

The owner of the villa told outlet Giornale Di Sicilia the shots showed the boat sinking in 60 seconds: "You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the vessel. It disappeared in a very short time."

Experts have said we're in a critical 24 hours in the search for survivors.

Earlier, Nick Sloane, who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia, said survivors might be trapped in air pockets, but that time was running out to save them (see post at 12.50pm).

Now Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at Aston University, has said the speed at which the vessel sank (a few minutes, according to accounts) and the fact that it remains intact "could favour the formation of small air pockets inside".

While the formation is "highly speculative", he says, there are records of survivors found in such pockets.

"A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals: this is common practice on submarines, and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year," he says.

"But whether air pockets formed on the Bayesian is simply impossible to predict."

There is a "big question mark" over how the superyacht sunk, the editor-in-chief of BOAT International has told Sky News.

Stewart Campbell said "nothing like this had happened before" in his recollection.

"These boats are built extremely tough. They are built to take on the biggest seas the ocean can throw at them," he said.

"Big volume aluminium boats are very capable. So the fact that a boat like Bayesian can sink in a storm like this is incredibly surprising."

He said even if a ship like this was knocked down "it should be been able to right itself".

"Even if the boat had been dismasted, theoretically the boat should have been even more stable as it would have meant less weight and the keel would then have anchored the boat more firmly in the sea.

"There are lots of questions to be answered.

"At the moment from my point of view and from the people I have spoken to, including captains of similar boats, there is a big question mark over how this happened."

The action of the boat when it was struck by the storm "would have been incredibly violent" and "it should have woken everybody up".

"The crew would have sprung into action and tried to get everyone into life rafts if they thought the boat was in danger," he said.

"We just don't know what situation the boat was in when this storm struck."
