Reporting from the 2023 Palma Boat Show, MBY editor Hugo Andreae takes us on a full tour of the Sunseeker 95 Meros and explains how this shared ownership scheme works...

This year’s Palma Boat Show saw a brand new Sunseeker 95 Yacht unveiled, and this one was specifically built for Meros, a co-ownership company. The heavily customised vessel boasts several modifications to suit its co-ownership purpose, both in terms of exterior styling and interior features.

The Meros co-ownership concept revolves around providing a fully equipped yacht with all the necessary toys and crew, allowing owners to simply arrive and enjoy their time on board. The yacht offers an array of amenities, including a Williams 460 Sportjet, ideal for watersports enthusiasts who can ski and wakeboard behind it.

The yacht also features a large hydraulic platform that lowers into the sea for launching and recovering the Sportjet. Additionally, there are other toys such as Seabobs and an e-foil electric surfboard for guests’ entertainment.

The yacht’s exterior spaces include a spacious cockpit area with flexible seating. The flybridge features glass panels with built-in infrared heating elements, providing radiant heat during colder months without warming the surrounding air. This feature enhances year-round usability, which is particularly important for shared ownership yachts.

Moving to the interior, the yacht offers an open-plan main deck saloon and dining area with a low-level seating zone and a large Hi-Lo TV. The interior design features neutral colours, allowing owners to personalise the space with their own scatter cushions, decorations, and personal effects. The dining area connects to a balcony that drops down over the sea, creating a refreshing atmosphere for guests.

The yacht’s main deck master cabin is a standout feature – glass inserts in the bulwarks allow for panoramic vistas from the bed, and the master cabin also includes a dressing area, a two-tier apartment-like layout, and an elegant curved staircase leading to a private office space. An additional door allows for direct access to a separate toilet during the night, providing convenience and privacy for the owner.

The lower deck is where you’ll find the guest cabins, providing comfortable accommodation for additional passengers. This Sunseeker 95 Yacht’s combination of luxurious features and the Meros co-ownership scheme offers a unique opportunity for boaters to enjoy the superyacht lifestyle without the associated hassles of ownership responsibilities.

Meros Adds a New Sunseeker 95 Yacht to its Co-ownership Fleet

Meros, the shared ownership platform that exclusively uses Sunseeker yachts, has officially welcomed a Sunseeker 95 Yacht to its range of offerings.

Following the impact on tourism during the pandemic, the global yacht charter market is expected to bounce back with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.6% during the forecast period from 2020 to 2028. The market increase is expected to be driven by a growing number of high-net-worth individuals and their desire for luxury cruising worldwide, with motor yachts being the preferred vessel.

The European market was valued at over 50% market share of the overall global yacht charter market in 2019 thanks to its favourable climate and natural beauty, principally governed by Mediterranean countries, including Spain, where Meros bases its yachts, Italy, Greece, Croatia and France. In addition, the UK, Germany and some Nordic countries form major markets for the yacht chartering business. The region is also home to one million people with a net worth of 5-50 million Euros, with 181,000 based in the UK.

Founded by a German entrepreneur, featuring British yachts and fronted by a French brand ambassador, Meros Yachtsharing is staging the premiere of its new Sunseeker Meros Signature 95 superyacht at the 55 th edition of Boot Dusseldorf.

Alpine driver Esteban Ocon – a Meros member and brand ambassador – will present the latest addition to the company’s co-ownership programme, with the new yacht’s official debut held on the second day of the world’s biggest indoor boat show.

The highly customised 28m yacht is the third member of the Meros fleet, along with another Sunseeker 95 Yacht presented in Boot last year and a Sunseeker 86 Yacht. All are managed by seasoned crews that include a captain, deckhand, stewardess and a personal chef, each crew.

Founded in 2019 by an experienced yacht owner inspired by the growth of the sharing economy, Meros Yachtsharing is the exclusive contractual partner and sole provider of a co-ownership model for Sunseeker superyachts in Europe.

The company’s aim is to offer the market an alternative to sole yacht ownership by providing financially attractive terms and guaranteeing a premium experience. Operated from branches in Germany, Spain, Malta and soon the UK, the co-owner programme provides access to the Meros fleet with access to over 10 yachting hotspots in Europe.

Georg Oehme, Managing Director of Meros Yachtsharing, said: “Our sustainable co-ownership model presents a unique opportunity to enter a growing market. In our yacht-sharing models, the costs are shared in parallel to your usage. It’s a modern, sustainable approach for the sector where we focus on the client’s entire experience.”

Meros is collaborating with Sunseeker London Group, the British builder’s European sales organisation, and industry experts to take care of yacht and crew operations, route planning and administration, so offering far more than asset management.

Meros offers both Flexshare and Quarter co-ownership models. Flexshare involves use of any of the Flexshare fleet by several co-owners and is the home of the Meros concierge, which offers members and co-owners exclusive invites and access to some of the world’s most desirable events such as the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.

As shown in 2023, one of Meros’ yachts is berthed trackside in Monaco and all owners are invited to enjoy a weekend hosted by the platform. In addition to this, Meros members and co-owners receive exclusive benefits from like-minded partners including NetJets and Thirdhome.

Meros also offers a classic co-ownership structure through the Quarter share model, with a 25 per cent stake of one boat, currently available only on the Sunseeker 86 Yacht. In this ownership, co-owners have direct ownership of a privately registered vessel, with Meros supporting and managing the vessel, all communication and crew.

After the success of Meros Flexshare in the Western Mediterranean last year, the programme is expanding into the Eastern Mediterranean and the UAE, allowing clients the opportunity to enjoy yachts in diverse regions and expanding their cruising season. Benefits of the arrangement include eliminating transfer costs and a quicker, easier way of exploring a variety of countries and cultures.

Meros Yachtsharing is also committed to environmental consciousness with an increasing capacity to use HVO-100 fuel across all new yachts. The initiative is supported by Repsol for distribution and MTU (Rolls-Royce) for research and development.

Meros Yachtsharing seeks co-owners for Sunseekers

Meros Yachtsharing has unveiled the itineraries of two of its co-ownership yachts for 2024 and beyond. The Sunseeker 95s High Energy and Blue Infinity One sit at the heart of what the company describes as an ‘exciting and highly innovative Flexshare ownership programme’. Shares start at €1.25 million for a 28-metre Meros Signature 95. And there’s space for more co-owners to come onboard.

There has been controversy online since its launch about the price of the scheme and its nature – shared ownership versus timeshare – but MD Georg Oehme bats this away saying that ‘breaking the mould’ of perceptions are the first challenge the company has had to overcome. He acknowledges that the time share idea has been frowned upon for many years, and having a concept that has similar roots means the company has to prove its value. “I guess this for us currently is a challenge but one that time and experience has fully in hand.”

A share gives access to the Meros fleet with six weeks per year that can be spread across the different yachts in their different locations. The fleet’s itineraries mean there are opportunities to get onboard in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Each boat has a maximum of eight owners.

“We currently have three yachts running with one yacht fully owned by just five clients. The second is almost full with four different owners with shares, and a new yacht with active offers,” says Oehme – he is the only current share owner who has ties to the company.

He expects the fleet and locations to expand year on year and, therefore, the reach for potential owners will also increase.

“With year five we wish to have ten yachts within the network, and owners from all over the world,” says Oehme. Currently, the nationality of owners is predominantly UK and central Europe (especially German and Switzerland) with the numbers from the US on the rise.

Seemingly, share owners can leave the programme whenever they like. The yachts’ cycle is three years but an owner can leave in year one, two or three.

“There is a buy back guarantee from Meros in the first two years. The third year the exit is harder as we have to find a buyer. Hence why we will always have an open discussion with clients. Year three is a transition to the next cycle. Owners have full transparency and they love the freedom. The cycle begins again, your investment is transferred to the new yacht and once again you have the opportunity to leave when you like.”

Oehme, an entrepreneur, has owned yachts since 1985 and was also part of a co-ownership plan. He says while he lived the best of both worlds, he felt there wasn’t a co-ownership option that was representing the entire yachting experience. He wanted co-owning to run at a certain level where compromise wasn’t apparent. Therefore he created his own structure, and purchased yachts upfront to allow clients to simply step onboard.

With shares starting at €1.25 million for a 28-metre Meros Signature 95 from Sunseeker, the company says co-owners in Flexshare not only get access to a spectacular yacht but also to the peace of mind that comes with a professional, dedicated crew, and full management of the yacht, crew, maintenance and other elements by the highly experienced Meros Yachtsharing team.

And, co-owners can also leverage their weeks if they aren’t able to attend.

“The yachts are commercial so this gives the opportunity to trade and sell their week. We have many ways to assure there’s no love or time lost in situations like this.”

Meros facilitates swapping with other co-owners or even selling extra weeks to them.

“If we cannot find a solution internally we can look to offer to the charter market. The value paid by the owner will be returned to the owner via charter income. They can then either take the funds or use that to purchase another week later in the year, either one that’s open or off another owner. In addition they can also utilise other yachts within the system so there’s much opportunity and this is all managed in house for the clients. If it’s very last minute like the day before, we cannot charter, swap etc then the week is lost but this situation is almost always avoidable even with a week’s notice – unless there is a serious issue in which case I’m sure this would not be our client’s priority.”

The Sunseeker 95 High Energy will offer opportunities to enjoy primarily the Adriatic and the Emirates, with the 2024-25 schedule taking in the South of France for the early part of the 2024 summer season before moving to the Balearics from July to October. Abu Dhabi and Dubai provide the winter location before returning to Croatia in April 2025.

Blue Infinity One will focus on the popular destinations of the western Mediterranean, beginning in the Balearics before moving to the South of France from May to July 2024, then heading back to Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca for the rest of the summer, or to Corsica and Sardinia for July and August before heading back to the Balearics for September.

The company says it also offers lifestyle benefits, for example, one of the Meros Flexshare yachts is berthed annually trackside at the iconic Monaco Grand Prix in May, with all Flexshare co-owners invited.

“We really believe Meros Yachtsharing’s approach to fractional ownership whether through our more traditional quarter share model or our progressive and forward thinking Flexshare model offers something special for owners who want the best without the hassle,” says Oehme.

“We are currently the only company in Europe to enable co-ownership of new Sunseeker superyachts managed by seasoned crews, and our expertise extends well beyond mere asset management. We are even committed to delivering an element of environmental consciousness for our co-owners, with increasing capacity to use HVO-100 renewable diesel across our fleet.”
