or other less expensive production .

Both had significant cored problems. One had bolt issues. One boat had severe of stringers where was mounted. Questionable glass issues; I have been in many yards where Stamas (both and sail) were in for of delaminated and refitting. Long process and were always bigger than first estimated.

Sail poorly due to shape and windage. Lots of liveabord space if you want a dockaminium. Usually can be had cheaply.

Hope this helps; tread carefully and be sure you have a thorough of structural if you are in the pre-purchase mode.

Fair winds,
Dr. Michele

and saw many different brands of boats being built.

The reality of production boat construction is that it is a balance between cost and quality.....The manufacturer wants to keep the costs down and the owner wants the most quality for the least ....

Many, many boats have cored construction. It is basically some type of wooden center (usually balsa) with two layers of glass, like an Oreo cookie. I don't know where you will find more info on this, but I am sure it exists. The priciple is great, until gets into the .

I sail now..... great until and get into the mix... but I like welding more than glass repair!!!

We did have seal problems with windows. Any boat of this vintage will require upgrading and some refitting. We knew we were not getting a .

This is not a fast boat, it does have windage and propwalk. She will never win any races, but she is a comfortable , sturdy boat that we find more than adequate for our travels.

. Solidly built. I did not have problems or other structural problems other than some window . It does not sail well, as it tends to point up when main is hoisted. I would not recommend it for long distance sailing, though we sailed from to via . Very comfortable for cruising -- great access. Our old boat (hull #24) may be available -- it was very well equipped for coastal and island cruising.

stamas 44 sailboat review

The Stamas 44 is a 44.0ft masthead ketch designed by Robert K. Johnson and built in fiberglass by Stamas Brothers between 1981 and 1985.

22 units have been built., it accomodates 7 people in 2 cabins plus salon..

The Stamas 44 is a heavy sailboat which is under powered. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is good. There is an excellent water supply range.

Stamas has been recognized for building strong, seaworthy vessels since the 1960's. They have continued to innovate and raise the standards of quality boat building since opening in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Their expertise in fiberglass boat building led them to develop boats for the US and foreign militaries, patrol boats for law enforcement agencies and research/exploration vessels as well. Many features that have become standard on boats were Stamas innovations. Fiberglass inner liners and self- bailing cockpits were created at Stamas.

HH 44 is a 49 ′ 8 ″ / 15.2 m catamaran sailboat designed by James Hakes and built by Hudson Yacht Group starting in 2021.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Max load displacement: 12,500kg / 27,558 lbs. Sail area: - Main: 74.2 m² / 799 ft² - Solent: 51.1 m² / 550 ft² - Staysail: 26.7 m² / 287 ft² - Fractional reacher: 109.7 m² / 1,181 ft² - Furling Gennaker: 148.9 m² / 1,603 ft²

  1. Review of Stamas 44

The DL-ratio for Stamas 44 is 397 which categorizes this boat among 'heavy cruisers'. Heavy Light 3% 0 50 100. 3% of all similar sailboat designs are categorized as heavier. A heavy displacement combined with smaller water plane area has lower acceleration and is more comfortable.

  2. Information on Stamas 44 Ketch

Images: 4. Re: info on Stamas 44 Ketch. I have experience with two of these boats; quality and build is similar to Irwin or other less expensive production boat. Both had significant cored deck problems. One had keel bolt issues. One boat had severe delamination of stringers where engine was mounted.

  3. STAMAS 44

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5
