Swing Cat is a performance cruising catamaran with a bridgedeck completed and launched in 2016. This Richard Woods Eclipse design represents a lot of boat and equipment, lovingly built and maintained. Swing Cat is owner built of solid wood and marine plywood and sheathed in biaxial glass fibre cloth impregnated with West-system epoxy resin.  The performance aspect of the boat comes from having daggerboards (rather than low aspect ratio keels), outboard motors for auxiliary power (rather than two inboard engines) and laminated tri-radial sails including a drifter (on a bowsprit) and a spinnaker. Swing Cat has beaching keels and kick-up rudders so is happy drying out in tidal creeks.  Its wind generator and 6 solar panels charge 500Ah of battery storage which provides electrical energy via 12V DC and 240V AC distribution.  One can live off the grid with a high level of creature comforts while remaining connected to the shore via computers and mobile phones (if desired!).

When on shore power in a marina, full use can be made of a microwave, toaster, electric kettle and electric heating.

The interior accommodation consists of a double cabin in the stern of each hull and single cabins in the bow of each hull, giving sleeping accommodation for 6.  The bridgedeck cabin provides comfortable seating around a large table and access to both hulls.  A cockpit awning, together with cockpit cushions, provide further shady seating in the cockpit as well as shelter from any shower.  The trampoline forward of the bridgedeck, between the hulls, is a favourite place for sunbathing, watching the sun go down, or for watching dolphins on passage.

The hulls and cabins are fully lined and insulated ensuring a cool interior on hot days and a cosy interior on cool days.  When at anchor on cold evenings a wood burning stove is available.

Swing Cat is designed to have minimal impact on the environment.  The sources of renewable energy means there is no need to have a fossil fuel generator.  There is an electric motor for the tender.

There is no discharge of sewerage from the boat and no conventional holding tank.  An ecological toilet ensures the separation of liquids from solids with both being captured, and disposed of, separately.  The absence of urine in the solids tank, together with the use of mechanical ventilation, ensures that using the heads is a pleasant experience!

Swing Cat also has a grey water tank for cruising in environmentally sensitive areas. This tank retains washing-up and shower water until it is OK to discharge it – for example when dried out on a beach, grey water can be discharged only when the tide is in and the boat is afloat.

With forward-looking sonar, broadband radar, AIS Tx & Rx, VHF radio, Echomax radar reflector, electronic chart plotter, full size chart table and safety equipment, including lightning protection, Swing Cat is fully equipped for creek crawling or bluewater sailing.

Based in the UK, Woods Designs is run by Richard Woods and specialises in the design of multihulls for both home and professional builders. Founded in 1981 we now boast possibly the most comprehensive range of catamaran designs in the world.

Boats can be built in a range of materials of which the most popular include sheet ply, cold moulded ply, strip plank cedar and foam sandwich. Like most designers we do not offer plans for catamarans built in steel or aluminium.

Nearly 3000 plans and over 200 production catamarans have now been sold. Boats are sailing all over the world. Cruisers have made many comfortable ocean crossings in complete safety while the number of trophies won is testament to the speed of the racing designs.

Woods Strider Club by Palamos, built 1989, low aspect ratio keels, all in very good condition and ready to sail. Four berths, two berths using the forward half of the two hulls plus room for two more adults on the bridge deck. Galley installed in aft port hull and chemiloo in starboard hull. Solar panel to port cabin sliding hatch charges single battery for instruments, cabin lights, navigation and steaming lights and autohelm. Sails are elderly but good condition and comprise of a main with fully battened head and a single slab reefing points, two jibs both fit the roller reefing foil, and an asymmetric spinnaker.

Instruments, Helix GPS and fish finder, Nasa log and compass, plus hand bearing compass. The Tohatsu ultra long shaft 6bhp sailpro outboard has less than 20 hours running and seems to use about 1Ltr hour cruising at 5kts. Under sail she cruises between 6 and 8kts in a BF4 and on the last trip the GPS recorded 10.3kts.Also included, full boom tent which covers the bridge deck and hull hatches, plus a boom mounted sun shade. An A frame has been installed to ease the raising and lowering of the mast which also facilitates access to the fore stay for sail changing.She is currently moored in Suffolk so delivery to the East Coast would be very easy, she can also be dismantled to be transported on a flat bed trailer (transport beams included). Hulls and decks compound polished, antifouled six weeks ago (all original gel coat).Being offered for sale due to the owners advancing years, a real shame as she is an absolute joy to sail and I will miss her.

Sometimes it’s hard to see from the outside what performance you might expect from one sailing boat vs another and so, like in cars, one measure often used is the Power to Weight ratio, in boats this is called the Sail Area to Displacement ratio or SAD. This is a universal measure that allows us to compare widely different models and come to a reasonably accurate view on their likely relative performance under similar sailing conditions.

Multihull World use a variation of the SAD calculations used by the major sail racing organisations and the figures we publish broadly look like this:

• SAD under 15 : Motor sailer
• SAD 15 - 20: cruiser
• SAD 20 - 25: Performance cruiser
• SAD 25 – 30: Cruiser racer
• SAD above 30: race boat

The calculation takes the upwind sail area and divides it by the actual weight of the boat. The calculation is a little more complicated than that but that’s the essence. It takes no account of hull shape, skipper quality or any other differences.

Unfortunately, not every vendor knows the sail area of their sails and not everyone knows the weight of their boat – for this reason we sometimes don’t have the SAD available to publish. Also, some manufacturers publish a weight that is well below the real weight of their boats and in that way appear to have much more performance than they actually do.

However, leaving those anomalies aside, we think this measure is an interesting one for those who are comparing multihulls or are coming to multihulls for the first time.

As a general rule – one generally trades performance for accommodation. If your boat is under 50ft and has walkways either side of beds low in the hull then she isn’t going to sail very well!

The WIZARD is a revolutionary design that offers 5 – 6 berths in 3 cabins, standing headroom, easy trailing, stability AND performance. The lifting hatch combined with the ‘pop-bottom’ gives standing headroom in the bridgedeck. The latter is raised when sailing. For the first time in a trailable catamaran there is a genuine double bunk.

It is legally trailable world-wide behind a family car. One person can assemble and rig it in under an hour ready for launching with no heavy lifting (e.g. the mast is raised using the trailer winch).

The Wizard is roomy. In its 22′ length there are 5 berths in 3 cabins for privacy (3 singles in the hulls and one double on the bridge deck), a separate toilet compartment. Galley and a dinette seating 5. There is standing headroom in the galley using a “pop bottom” in the bridge deck. For an interior drawing see Sango which has a similar layout.

It is fast, the computer predicts speeds of 10 knots under power (with a 15hp outboard) and 16-18 knots under sail (with the racing rig). These prediction have been well proven many times in practice. Yet it remains maneuverable and easy to sail single-handed. It has shallow draft and is beachable.
