Boatyard Guide 2021
The hunt for the perfect boatyard for regular maintenance, repairs or a major refit project can be tedious as Southern California offers a wide range of full-service boatyards, each with its own specialties and staff of skilled craftspeople.
The Log ’s 2021 Guide to Southern California Boatyards (including facilities in Mexico) aims to serve as a starting point for boaters in search of the right repair and haulout facility for their individual needs. This guide provides key data about Southern California boatyard options, including areas of specialty and on-site amenities, to narrow down the many choices.
The guide includes the latest contact information for each local boatyard, such as a name, address, phone number, fax number, website and e-mail address, if available.
The Log recently surveyed the region’s boatyards to ensure that each listing is as accurate and up-to-date as possible. The Log assumes no responsibility for changes that may have occurred since the survey was conducted. Please email information on any needed changes for next year’s guide to [email protected].

I‘m looking for a California shipbuilder that built a German Frers/Chad Turner 41’ Sloop back in the 1984. The builder was named „New Orleans Marine & Marina Sailboat Yard California by Nautor, USA (E. Feo & D. Choate)“. Could you give an indication to who / where this was? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you and best regards, Sebastian

5 Easy Pieces – La Paz to Puerto Escondido in the Sea of Cortez
- Mexico Boating
- 5 Easy Pieces – La…
– by Capt. Pat Rains
La Paz, Baja California Sur, is a beautiful historic port, a lovely beach resort city and the capital of Southern Baja – found at the south end of the Sea of Cortez.
For us yatistas (recreational boaters) La Paz (pop. 200,000) offers so many nautical services (five full-service marinas, five boat yards for haul out & repair, many marine chandlers) that nearly 6,000 liveaboard boaters from the U.S. now make it their home port away from home, staying 6 months and even 6 years.
By sea, we reached La Paz in late November, 2017, along with 120 members of the CUBAR powerboat rally and at least 200 Baja Ha Ha sail boaters. We had all just sailed or powered down the length of Baja, now heading up into the Sea of Cortez. We explored the town, feasted at its great restaurants, provisioned our galleys and filled out fuel tanks. Though I’ve visited La Paz by boat nearly 50 times, I’m still in love and find it difficult to leave its comforts.
Gateway to Adventure La Paz is the Gateway to the Sea of Cortez – and that well-kept promise of pristine salt-water adventure is what’s calling me onward today.
Here are “Five Easy Pieces” – 5 small, remote, but rewarding stops – to help you plan your cruising itinerary between La Paz and Puerto Escondido. You’ll find yacht services on both ends, but none in between. Yet, I consider this remote 115-mile stretch to be THE most interesting cruising grounds on the Pacific side of Mexico.
Each of my Five Easy Pieces has overnight anchoring potential during winter cruising season, when prevailing conditions are from the north. So if you watch your weather, you can plan to spend at least a few days in each place, maybe a week or more. They’re all detailed and charted in “Mexico Boating Guide.”
Partida Cove on Isla Espiritu Santos Only 27 miles from downtown La Paz, this 3-island chain is uninhabited yet provides 22 separate coves – all with dramatic geology, white sand beaches and good holding for overnight anchoring in multiple places. Partida Cove is the favorite first stop. The whole island chain is a Natural Marine Park, so your SEMARNAT permit lets you anchor, kayak, snorkel or scuba dozens of reefs and hike the easy trails.
To work your way north toward Isla San Jose, Partida Cove and Ensenada Grande make good stepping stones, as does “The Hook” anchorage on Isla San Francisco.
(1.) Amortajada on Isla San Jose Amortajada Lagoon (23 n.m. from Espiritu Santos) is a triangular estuary that projects 2.5 n.m. west-southwest from the south end of Isla San Jose’s mountainous profile. Punta Ostiones (Oysters Point) Light marks the west corner, but the whole lagoon is bounded by a unique linear sand berm (about15-foot high) that allows entrance by dinghy or panga only at one or two cuts. Amortajada means Shrouded. Anchor in the commodious mile-wide Bahia Amortajada almost anywhere northwest the lagoon and east of the white pinnacles of Isla Cayos.
Inside are four square miles of shallow sheltered waters, 20-foot trees, mangrove marshes and a 1.25-mile channel ideal for exploring, bird watching, swimming and fishing by kayak or dinghy (quiet motor to protect wildlife). Vacate the lagoon at sunset when blood-thirsty “no see ums” show up. Alternates on Isla San Jose: La Salina or Cazadero Points.
(2.) San Evaristo Bay Back on Baja, San Evaristo lies directly across the 3.4-mile channel from Isla San Jose. Evaristo villagers tend herds of goat, fish from pangas and operate the salt works on the north slope of the village (population 300).
Anchorage choices are (a.) off Village Beach so you can watch all the action if a pick up arrives via the newly graveled 65-mile road from La Paz, or (b.) nearby inside the uninhabited rectangular North Cove, where the tinkling of goat bells may start your morning. In case of south wind, choose Village Beach.
Evaristenos are friendly. School kids love to practice English with visiting boaters. They may greet you on the beach or zoom by your boat offering to sell you a fresh fish or half kilo of fresh goat cheese. I’d buy both.
(3.) Agua Verde Bay Cristal turquoise water over white-sand bottoms and a choice of pleasant winter anchorages draw us to Agua Verde, 45 n.m. up from Evaristo. Anchor off the tongue-in-cheek “yacht club” beach in the bay’s northwest corner. Or, anchor east of Pyramid Rock.
Only slightly larger than Evaristo, the fishing villagers of Agua Verde also tend a few goats and pigs and operate Maria’s, a part-time grocery store. If you’re lucky, you can sometimes buy fresh baked “empanadas,” a tasty pastry, half-moon shaped and filled with cheese, fruit or mystery meat. If you plan to be here two or three more days, ask the matron of the store if she’ll make you a dozen.
Where’s the store? Land on the southeast end of the palm-studded beach in front of the village, walk 300 yards inland and ask anyone you meet – Donde esta la tienda? Or ask Se venden empanadas hoy? TIP: Don’t bring Fido ashore here; the pigs run loose and don’t like gringo dogs.
(4.) Isla Danzante Primera The translation “Prima Ballerina” sounds pretty, but this island looks like a dragon or dinosaur swimming north with its snout just above sea level. At 20 n.m. from Agua Verde and only 2.5 n.m. outside Puerto Escondido, most folks use Danzante Island to avoid entering the complex harbor entrance after dark.
Honeymoon Cove on the northwest corner of Danzante Island is an easy in and out anchorage, so it’s also a popular day sail from Marina Puerto Escondido. Honeymoon Cove has three picturesque lobes each big enough for only two boats to swing, or you can drop the hook just outside the lobes. The warm water and pristine sand bottom are the perfect place for novice snorkelers to get comfortable. Tiny silver guppies may peek at their reflections in your dive mask or nibble cheese morsels from your fingers.
Alternately, the next two similar anchoring spots within a mile south of Honeymoon are ironically dubbed Denouement Cove and Divorce Cove. Or, six miles south of Isla Danzante, Candeleros Cove has shelter from south wind and a yatistas friendly hotel.
Finally we arrive at Puerto Escondido (Hidden Port). We can top off our diesel tanks, gas up our outboard, grab a mooring out in the land-locked Main Bay, or get a full-service marina slip, all from Marina Puerto Escondido. Or we can haul out for repairs or secure dry storage with the 65-ton lift.
The 2-story blue glass marina complex (formerly a Fonatur marina) houses a small grocery store, Pepergino’s wood-fired pizza restaurant, West Coast Multihulls charter office, a dive charter office, showers and coin laundry, cruisers’ lounge, library and the marina office. A mile inland is Tripui RV resort with a small hotel, restaurant and RV storage. For details about Marina Puerto Escondido, see my Mexico Report column in SEA Magazine’s September 2017 issue.
The town of Loreto is 15 miles north off Highway 1. Loreto has a busy panga basin and a passenger loading dock for small excursion ships, but no marina for yachts. The airport a mile south of Loreto has direct flights to the U.S. on Alaska, Calafia and others.

OUR HISTORY
Sergio Susarrey Owner and manager
A local passionate fisherman, turned his fishing passion to the biggest fishing charter operator in Ensenada.
Sergio's Sportfishing Center began in 1997 however, the commencement of the business date back to 1960 when founder Alfonso Susarrey had a dream to start a company with the goal of owning and managing his own fleet of boats. His first boat a 15-foot skiff and a 10-horsepower outboard motor "I used to take two people at a time" recalls the founder "I would catch yellowtail, barracuda, white sea bass, bonito…you just name it. I would stay within the harbor or sometimes go three or four miles out. We caught halibut to 30 pounds and even caught a 182-pound black sea bass on the skiff." The founder had dreams of expansion and a few years later he bought a 40-foot hull for $300.00 which became the D-D his first major vessel. Not long after, he had the largest boat in the harbor "Then I took off big," he says. Alfonso Susarrey went to San Diego, where he saw and fall in love with the Qualifier 85. Its owner, Bruce Barnes, took him out a few times and let him work on the boat. With just $5,000.00 in his bank account, he was shocked to learn that a similar boat would cost about $350,000.00. He settled for a set of plans for $2,000.00 and started from scratch. Two years later, with the help of credit from a San Diego lumber yard and the assistance of a local boat builder, Susarrey had in his fleet an 85-foot sportfisher, which he named the Ensenada Clipper. Alfonso Susarrey died on July 1, 1999 following a year long battle with cancer at age 62. Over the years, Susarrey managed the business end of his operation while his younger brother Oscar skippered the Ensenada Clipper. Beginning in 1986, he shared management duties with his son Sergio, finally stepping down as titular head of the fleet in 1996 when a new company Sergio's Sportfishing Center, was formed. As he had wished, his ashes were scattered from the deck of the Ensenada Clipper, with his brother Oscar at the helm. He was a respected leading figure on the Ensenada sportfishing industry for nearly four decades his legacy and hard work will always be remembered. Sergio Susarrey got into the business early, working on the boats since 5. At 12, he had learned enough English to start selling tickets. A few years later, with a degree in industrial engineering and co-ownership of the business-along with the desire to cater to the serious fisherman with this into account- he had helped the company grow into a reliable operation; in the early 90's Sergio bought and help redesign the charter vessel El Cazador which became a must ride vessel in the Ensenada harbor. During the last 20 years, the industry has gone through many changes and many of the "old" operators are no longer in business. During the "Golden Age" of fishing (1950-1980), "open party" trips for groups of 20 to 50 anglers were the norm and fares were sold individually. Today, more personalized private charters are preferred, accommodating groups of 6 to 25 anglers. Trips of this type are slightly more expensive but offer a much more personal and memorable experience.

Ensenada is a port city in Baja Mexico, ranked 3rd-largest in the Mexican state Baja California Sur. The city covers a total area of 61 km2 (24 mi2) and has population around 0,52 million. It is located approx 125 km (78 mi) south of San Diego (CA USA) .
Ensenada is one of the first settlements established in the Californias. It has emerged as an aerospace center and later was developed as premier cruise ship travel destination. There is a nearby area (to the north-east) where wine grapes are grown. In 1703 were planted the first vineyards in the region (at San Ignacio Mission).
The municipality's main agricultural zones are three - Guadalupe-Calafia (to the north), Ojos Negros (to the east) and San Quintin (to the south). The region's main crops are grapes, olives, wheat, alfalfa, tomato, asparagus, green onions, broccoli.
In 2023, for the first time, Ensenada Port surpassed the 1 millionth cruise tourist mark.
Port Ensenada
Port Ensenada (locode MXESE) is on the coastline of Bahia de Todos Santos (inlet of the Pacific Ocean, on the peninsula's Gold Coast).
Ensenada is an important fishing, tourist and commercial (cargo/ containership ) port. It is also home to a Mexican navy base (serving the country's Pacific Naval Force / RN-2 region), Airport, military airfield (doubling as airport for entry into Mexico).
Port Ensenada has a major influence on the region's economy as it is Baja California's (and the Peninsula's) only deep-water port. The port is directly linked to several marine shipping routes connecting Baja California with La Paz , Manzanillo , Mazatlan , Acapulco , Lazaro Cardenas (Mexico's largest seaport), San Diego , Long Beach and Los Angeles , Puerto Quetzal , Valparaiso-Santiago , Yokohama Japan , Hong Kong China .
The Port's largest revenues are from cruise shipping/dockings, followed by commercial fishing. The most economically important fisheries are tuna, shrimp, lobster, abalone, sea urchin, sardine, mackerel, seaweed. Most of the catches are exported to East Asia (Japan and China). The local tuna farming industry exports the meat almost exclusively to Japan.
The Port has commercial, industrial and passenger (ferry and cruise) terminals. The Bahia de Todos Santos coast has numerous boat and yacht marinas. Smaller cruise vessels (including superyachts and pleasure craft) may also dock at the marinas Baja Fiesta, Cruiseport Village, Coral and Baja Naval. There also dock commercial and sportfishing boats.
Ensenada is often included in USA-based cruise itineraries (including to Hawaii) as nearest to USA foreign port. This is done in order the ships to comply with the US cabotage laws (restricting coastwise trade and passengers / goods transportation within the USA).
A "shore excursion" option from Ensenada is the bus tour to Valle de Guadalupe (approx 20 km / 12 mi north of the city). Valle de Guadalupe is increasingly popular among tourists for its wines and Baja Med (fusion) cuisine that combines traditional Mexican-Mediterranean-Asian food specialties.
Ensenada cruise terminal
Cruise ships to Ensenada dock at the Naval cruise terminal, located in the port's industrial area. The pier is located near the Malecon boardwalk avenue - famous with its enormous Mexican flag. On the terminal, there is a market with numerous shops (including for hand-made souvenirs, conveniencies, pharmacy, store for tobaccos and liquors). There is a taxi rank and a small parking area (also used by tour buses). Shuttle bus service between the terminal and the city is at extra charge.
The cruise ship terminal is located near Avenida Lopez Mateos (Ensenada's tourist area) with its numerous shops, bars and dining venues.
New Carnival cruise terminal
On February 10, 2018, Carnival Cruise Line revealed the company's multi-million-dollar Ensenada port development project. The news was announced at the re-opening ceremony for the Long Beach Cruise Terminal (Los Angeles). Currently, Ensenada is visited mainly on Carnival's short cruises (3-day and 4-day itineraries) leaving roundtrip from Long Beach.
The new port project will provide Carnival cruise passengers with unique dining and retail shopping experiences and attractions. Details on the port development are yet to be revealed.

Kenny Kieding
Owner and Broker
Raised in Santa Barbara, Kenny has been sailing since he was three years old. His first experience on the water was with his father, crewing on a Geary 18. Later he raced his own 8′ Sea Shell dinghy (similar to a Sabot) and then made the jump to racing Lasers. At that time he was one of the top 10 picks on the West Coast to train for a week in Lasers at the Squaw Valley Olympic Training Center.
He is a 3rd generation Santa Barbara Yacht Club member. His grandfather, Ray Kieding, was the founder of the Santa Barbara Sea Shell fleet, and Kenny spent numerous summers coaching members of the Santa Barbara Youth Foundation.
Kenny is President and Owner of The Chandlery Yacht Sales. He actively coaches clients in all aspects of sailboat ownership, including cruising, racing, yacht maintenance and upkeep. He is frequently hired to optimize racing boats to achieve their maximum performance within any given class.
In his free time, he enjoys tinkering with his Bertram 31, racing various high-performance sailboats with friends, and being with his family and his beloved lab, Tilly the Harbor Dog. Kenny can be contacted at [email protected].
John grew up in Cleveland, Ohio sailing on the Great Lakes. An early memory was hearing the ferry boat horns on the island where his family and he summered, then riding his bike down to the docks to help the old-timers catch the dock lines. His love for the water has never waned.
After completing degrees in geography and environmental science from UC Santa Barbara, John bought a small sailboat and spent two years sailing down the Pacific coast of central and South America. Since then he has captained and crewed on both power and sail vessels ranging from his 8’ sabot to 143-meter research ships. His love of travel by boat and as a delivery captain has brought him too far off ports in Polynesia, Africa, and the entire west coast of North America. John enjoys spending time with his family, playing music with friends, playing in the ocean and…sailing!
John can be contacted at [email protected] .
Krista Kieding
Co-Owner & Operations Manager
Krista Kieding grew up in Kansas which, remarkably, did not deter her parents from owning and sailing a 16-foot Hobie Cat….albeit on a lake!
Krista made a move from Kansas to California to attend college and graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Psychology — something she sometimes finds useful in the negotiation phases of the yacht brokerage business. She now brings over 30 years of financial, marketing, customer service, and project management experience to Chandlery Yacht Sales and loves to ensure her clients’ boat buying experience is efficient and enjoyable.
Outside of work, Krista enjoys running, reading, hiking, and anything having to do with the ocean. She and Kenny have been married for over 23 years and have two daughters, Paige and Carly. They are delighted to call Santa Barbara home and enjoy all the community has to offer.

Bill first started sailing with his father on their “snowbird” at 10 years old. Although his Dad didn’t know how to sail, they both watched other sailors until they got the hang of it.
Bill moved to Santa Barbara in late 1971 and discovered a renewed love of sailing. He crewed on the charter vessel the “Swift of Ipswich” and later became 1st mate under Captain Herb Underwood. After graduating from SBCC in 1973 he was accepted at UCSB and was asked by Emerson Smith to assist in teaching the sailing classes. Bill taught sailing for multiple quarters. Some of Bill’s sailing/racing experience includes:
- Trans-Pac ’75 LA to Honolulu
- Trans-Pac ’75 Honolulu to Okinawa
- Trans- Pac ’77
- Trans-Pac ’79
- Trans-Pac ’81
- Royal Hawaiian Cup “Round the State Race”
- Pan-Am Clipper Cup ’80, ’82
- MDR to Puerto Vallarta ’77, ’79
- Manzanillo Race
Bill has also delivered multiple boats, both power and sail, to Hawaii, Mexico and various places on the west coast.
An entrepreneurial spirit overcame him in ’83 and he decided to open a sailing school and charter company in Long Beach teaching beginning, intermediate, advanced, cruising and navigation classes as well as racing technique and theory culminating in racing as crew in the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race.
Many of Bill’s students have gone on to purchase racing and cruising boats. Some have sailed all over the world. As you can tell, Bill brings vast knowledge to our clients, enabling them to achieve their wildest dreams.
