‍ Buying a sailboat can be expensive, but building your own can save you money. So what are sailboats you can build from home?

Sailboats that you can build from home will likely be a small boat under 20 feet. These could be from many different boat suppliers such as B&B Yachts, Brooks Boat Designs, and Chase Small Craft. Boat plans will vary based on your budget and how much time you have on your hands.

Based on my previous experience, building your own boat will take much longer than if a professional were to do it. You also have to be able to study plans, consider various sailboat designs, and have tons of supplies such as fiberglass tape or fiberglass cloth. On top of that, you will also have to be good with your hands.

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Sailboat at Home?

As you have likely already done so, the math between building your own boat and buying one may be a huge difference. Likewise, you may even enjoy the challenge of taking an older boat that is gutted and restoring with parts from a kit to build one new again.

But how much does it cost exactly to build a boat from the comfort of your own garage or workshop? The prices are going to vary dramatically depending on your situation and material needed to get the job done. In addition, the time that it takes to complete this will also vary.

Sail plans are rather inexpensive if you are aiming to build a small boat. These plans allow you to see the workings of the boat design and what you need to build the boat.

Without these plans, you will not know the exact details of the design and it can cause major issues with the boat’s hull or other areas of the boat. Think of these as the backbone or instructions of the boat’s infancy before being built.

Price Per Square Foot

You should assume to pay anywhere between $300 to $600 per square foot if you are interested in building a boat. Buying a kit outright can be a good way to save time, but oftentimes these do not come with everything you need.

Instead, you should try to source as much of the materials at the best price as possible. Thinking ahead is part of the process and you might be able to score a deal at a lumber yard or hardware store for parts.

Boat Designs Matter

The design of the boat will be much different from one boat to the next, regardless if they are the same size in length. If you are pondering boats that range anywhere between 16 and 20 feet, you should factor in the shape of the hull, any rigging, and various appendages.

Prices tend to increase when there are more complexities within the designs. If you are considering a kit with more details than others, you will also have to pay more for the designs on that as well.

Kits Can Differ

It is important to understand that all kits are not going to be the same. As you gander at sailboat kits online to stitch together, you need to thoroughly look over to see if you have everything you need before buying.

It would also be at your advantage to ask the seller if any additional parts or supplies are needed. This may change your dynamic on the kit buying process and you may pass up one for another if it has everything you need. An all-inclusive kit may cost several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars more to have the convenience of everything in the bundle.

Construction Approaches

Some boat plans may require you to have certain tools to get the job done. This means special saws or planers, which the average person simply does not have.

Purchasing specialty tools might be expensive upfront and hard to find depending on what it is. Your best bet would be to check locally for others trying to sell their tools or consider a boat plan that does not require extensive tools to finish the job.

How Long Does it Take to Build a Sailboat?

An easy to build sailboat could take a while to build from scratch. Many different variances come into play that are difficult to pinpoint for everyone. But how long is that exactly and how will your experience play into this?

A fun project to sail in the wind could take you several months to well over a year depending on the boat plan and how big your boat is going to be. In addition, the materials all need to be accounted for prior to starting in the event a hardware store does not have them in stock.

Time Varies

The time that passes for simple boat designs on small sailing vessels can be done in a few weeks. This is assuming you have everything you need and work non-stop around the clock.

Certain complex situations may make the process long, such as the difficulty of working with some materials. If you are a skilled laborer, it may take you half the time compared to a novice. The amount of time it can take will vary on your availability and skill level.

Planning ahead will undoubtedly offer the most time-saving features. It also helps if you can tackle parts of the project at your own pace.

Complexity of Design

The design of the boat may make the construction process longer. For example, it may take you longer to build a catamaran compared to a similar lengthed monohull.

More complex designs might require more materials, therefore making the process a bit longer to complete. Furthermore, you will also need more experience working with difficult designs and that will affect you more as a newbie.

Be sure to manage your expectations well and do not allow yourself to become too stressed over this fun project. If you can, seek expert boat building advice from a local builder or the company you purchased sail plans through.

Quality Materials

The quality of the materials will matter significantly when building a boat and will greatly affect the time it takes to construct it. Handling fiberglass or carbon fiber might require specialty tools, while wood also demands a certain level of craftsmanship.

If you are not skilled at working with the material at hand, it might affect the quality of the build and you may have to go back to fix mistakes. This will definitely add more time to your project, because mistakes are bound to happen with your first project.

To save time, consider adding the tools and materials throughout the year or as often as your budget allows. You may want to try testing your skills on fiberglass or other materials to get a feel for how to work with it.

Open/Dayboat, Free Sailboat Plans

Everyone who digs boating has heard of the Hobie Cat, the sleek little catamaran that burst on the scene and captured the attention of all the fast-action sailors.

hobby kat free boat plans

Marked by asymmetrical hulls and special trampoline supports, the Hobie can reach speeds above 20 mph and perform with a rare agility.

But it has one drawback.

It costs mucho dinero.

Thus, we introduce the Hobby Kat, sailboat plans, a build-it-yourself version of the “Hobie” that should cost from half to a third of the commercial version. If you have the moola, of course, go for a Hobie and have the time of your life on the water.

If not, try our Hobby

The homebuilt is not quite the same.

But she sails sweetly and fast—qualities which have made the “Hobie” popular

Even in a light air she’ll slip through the water at a fast clip.

She has no centreboards, leeboards or keel, and needs none.

The inside of each hull has built-in lift, like an airplane wing, so that as the boat heels and one hull digs in the boat is pulled back to windward.

She can run in very shallow water and the rudders kick up for beaching.

You can carry her on a trailer or even disassemble her.

tern free boat plan

Many a “stink pot” addict will take a second look at Tern because she planes in modest breezes, is easy to handle, and her streamlined prow arid pod-shaped, “inland scow” type hull offer slight water resistance. Then too, there’s a charm about the tiller of a sailer that’s not matched by the wheel of a motor-powered boat. Part of it is the challenge of making the most of nature’s free-wheeling breezes. Even with her 72sq.ft of sail, this Free Sailboat Plan is remarkably stable, and packs as many as four persons aboard

For thousands of inland lakes, Tern is the answer to sailing water sport, she is rugged and easy to launch

And she’s remarkably easy to build.

sailboat plans

Falcon is a small, speedy, sporty sailboat which handles well. Tests on the original Falcon showed that she could easily out-distance boats of comparable size such as the one design class Snipe and Comet sailers.

And she will pace neck and neck with 18 footers with considerably greater sail spread.

bannock

This strong, beamy, eight-foot pram may be sailed either cat-rigged or sloop-rigged.

The dagger-board may be adjusted forward to balance the helm when sailing with the addition of a jib sail.

Oars or a small outboard motor may also be used to power this versatile Free Sailboat Plans.

Dart

Dart” is a small two or three person sailing craft, designed for use on protected waters such as bays. lakes, rivers or wherever sheltered waters are found. Its construction will repay the builder handsomely and provide a fast sailing craft, light in weight, easily transportable and cheap to construct with all difficult joinery eliminated

It provides thrilling and economical sport.

Cresent

The 'Crescent', designed by C. T. Allen, is the ideal sailboat for day sailing on a small lake, river, or protected waters of a bay.

Centreboard design (Fig. 2) reduces Crescent's draft, so Shallow is not a problem.

Its broad beam of over 5½ft. makes it an ideal family boat because there is room for a cockpit large enough to accommodate four adults or two adults and three kids, and side and forward decks big enough to stretch out on when sun bathing.

"Jewel" is a 16' Crescent Sailboat being built by Mike Allen from the free sailboat plans by C.T .Allen in the 1958 "Boat Builders Handbook". And what a superb job Mike is doing check out his photos here .

Crescent

Sailing enthusiasts and backyard boat builders are not likely to find free boat plans for a sailing pram that can be built faster, lighter, stronger, or less expensively than Graefin-10. Two men can begin work on a Friday evening and have a smart, lively 10-ft. 85-pound sailboat in the water by Sunday evening (it’s been done).

zephyr

Zephyr Is a refinement of a type of boat developed by the English for use in the rough open waters of the English Channel. Not only is it fast under sail, but it can stand up under punishment. And it’s light enough to be easily loaded atop an auto or light trailer.

Breeze-Baby

breeze baby

Skimming off a brisk wind or with the wind abeam, Breeze-Baby actually planes with one person aboard. Despite her rowboat lines that make her easy to build, she handles easily under her simple sail, an ideal first boat. Simple lines are adapted to plywood construction that’s strong, light and that keeps Breeze-Baby’s bilges dry

You can take her with you atop your car or on a lightweight trailer for summer fun wherever you vacation or get in a week-end’s sailing.

cats paw

Cat’s Paw is easy to build because of the straight-sided hulls. The sheer line is flat and that simplifies building the form. Bow and stern are straight, so there’s no cockeyed bevel to fit and fuss with

She Is an Ideal boat to learn or practice sailing in because she will forgive so many mistakes.

Petrel 33: widen your horizons

Petrel 33 is the logical evolution of her smaller sister petrel 28 , with the task to expand the horizons of cruising activity for a 4-6 person crew, raising the bar of onboard comfort, keeping the boat size under the critical (for a homebuilder) size of 34 foot – 10 meters of overall length., a “new classic” looking cruiser, sturdy, with no frills and weird solutions, ready to let you sail with a decent speed and a very good comfort level both at anchor and sailing., the starting point is the very good sailing capabilities shown by the petrel 28, so i decided to develope this hull into a enlarged design, keeping a quite narrow hull for actual standard, prolonging the bow lines for a plumb stempost; i expect to have a similar behaviour of the proven 28footer, with a tender weather helm in every situation, a very soft and gentle wave riding attitude in a seaway, and a good acceleration coming out of the tacks, i expect a little bit more speed given the longer water length ; section are moderately full at the bow, maximum beam is around 60% of hull lenght , transom sections keep a moderate vee.

Stability calculations give us good parameters (see stability curve attached) , with a real large positive area stability, a 123° AVS (Angle of Vanishing Stability) with loaded boat, and a minimal negative area in the stability curves.

Sailplan is based on a 50% area split among mainsail and a furling jib ; we kept the upwind sailing area to a moderate value, avoiding “wannabe racers” temptations; a decent sized gennaker can be hoisted on the fixed bowsprit, an obvious choice given the fact that the new generation furlers are making this sails very easy to manage for cruising crews too, adding the pleasure of sailing downwind in light airs at a decent pace, a weather situation which is quite a pain in normal mainsail + jib configurations ; in roughest situation you can hoist a storm jib on a removable internal stay fitted on a high load chainplate leaning on the forward structural bulkhead ; rig is a classical 2 spreaders mast , spreaders are 15° swept, there is a structural backstay and no structural runners, lower shrouds are doubled., deck gear configuration features classical sturdy and manageable solutions, without too many frills : 4 self tailing winches to pull sheets, halyards and control lines, 2 stoppers array on cabin top panel, 2 tracks for jib cars, so that the jib can keep a decent shape even furled, a small track for the mainsail purchase, all the control lines are led to cockpit to avoid bow walks in “spicy” situations (plans will detail how to make bombproof fitting points for lifelines too);, boat will be powered by a diesel (20-30 hp) or electric (7 kw) inboard engine fitted with a saildrive or shaft-line transmission ; this will allow to keep a decent pace while motoring in zero wind situation, or to add a good booster to sail thrust if needed; i expect to reach a 6.5 knots boat speed at 2000 rpm with a 30 hp diesel engine., rudder and steering system:, rudder is a single blade semi-compensated one with tiller steering system ; there will be two options detailed on plans: spade rudder with ss steel shaft (this solution is depicted in rendered images), and an easier to build transom hung rudder., finkeel is naca profile keel made of welded steel plates, ; ballast is made by lead poured in the keel hollows ; keel is fitted on the hull with a web of bolts on solid hardwood floors, with nuts and high thickness ss steel counterplates under the cabin floorings; keel load is carefully distributed to avoid any local high stress area., interiors and on board living:, this area marks the main differences among this 34 footer and her smaller sister; higher hull topsides and two more meters of boat make a world of difference in terms of interiors and on board comfort; we have 6 regular berths, a comfortable galley and dinette area, a decent volume for on board systems and storage, all that you need to medium-long range sailing given the size of the boat ; both forward and after cabin are closed with a small door to gain a little bit more privacy ; cabin height is around 191 cm , cockpit is quite wide, and it’s designed to be comfortable for a crew of 6 while sailing with the heeled boat too ; transom area is protected by a sturdy wooden hinged structure that can be lowered when moored to be used as a transom platform. low sleek coamings protect the forward area of the cockpit , making the primary winch basement too; toerails and good sized areas among cabin flanks and hull sheerline make going to the bow a very safe operation even when boat is heeled and in rough conditions;, building system:, given the good amount of miles sailed by petrel 28  in every sea state with very good reliability, i keep a similar structure for this project, upgrading the scantlings to cope with higher stresses; so the boat structure is a grid of plywood bulkheads and frames linked by solid wood stringers and a mixed plywood-solid wood structure forming keel backbone and stempost ; hull planking is made by 12 mm plywood, with the radiused area made by two layers of 6 mm plywood panels , all glued to the underlying structural grid , in a reliable , sturdy and easy to build system called “radius chine” ; cabin , cockpit and deck surfaces are made by 10-12 mm plywood panels stiffened by a grid of secondary stringers, solid beams and other structural elements; the hull bottom is further stiffened by a number of solid wood floors , tightly spaced in the centerboat area, where they bear the finkeel loads. all critical areas and structural bondings are strengthened and stiffened by epoxy resin laminated glass fabric and epoxy resin liquid joinery and structural bondings. this building system is definitely suited to be realized by home builders or small boatyards, with a basic level of wood craftmanship , in a decent amount of time given the size of the boat., in my view this will allow a small boatyard to build and offer a highly customized top level sailboat keeping the final prize to a reasonable level, which is basically the main concern when it comes to manage a small boatyard..

Devlin Designing Boat Builders

Sailboat Plans

Sailboats are well represented in the Devlin family.  Sam’s son Cooper owns a 17 foot Eider.  His son MacKenzie sails a 15 foot Nancy’s China having sold his 12 foot Mudpeep  which was built by our master builder Joel.  Lee, our office manager, has the 15 foot Egret he built at the shop and he also has a 22 foot Arctic Jaeger schooner which he bought after Cooper found it for him on Craig’s list.  Sam built the Red Schooner in 1981.  And yes, Sam and Soitza Devlin own an about to be launched Marsh Wren 20.  Its new sails just arrived last week.

What does this mean for you?  Could you be in better hands for realizing your dream sailboat?  From 8 feet to 28 feet, from day sailer to blue water cruiser, we have a wonderful selection of sailboat construction plans for you.

Plans come in two basic flavors: Study Plans and Construction Plans. Study plans are inexpensive and give you the opportunity to examine  a detailed scale drawing of the design. Construction plans are vastly detailed and can lead you through the entire build of a boat. The price varies with the complexity of the design. There are boats that exist as study plans only, and the reason is that the development of a full set of construction plans can take hundreds of hours. If you see a boat that you would like to see developed, be sure to talk to Sam.

After a youth messing around in all sorts of boats on the Thames, I gained my degree - a BSc (Bachelor of Science) in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from Newcastle University in 1974.

Straight after University l worked in the design office of McGruer & Co. Scotland for 4 years - famous for high performance racing /cruising yachts beautifully crafted in wood (cold moulded as well as conventional clinker and carvel). l then became Technical Manager at D.M. Russell Marine - formerly Jas. A. Silvers yard just up the road at Rosneath, for 5 years - famous for their motor yachts - this period found me sailing/cruising in all sorts of craft around the coast of the UK and regular racing in everything from Dragons to the IOR fleet on the Clyde.

'Deadliest Catch's 10 Closest Calls, Ranked

For 20 seasons and over 350 episodes and counting, Discovery reality series Deadliest Catch has followed the crews of crab-fishing vessels on the Bering Sea as they rush to meet their seasonal quotas. The series premiered in 2005 and continues to be one of the network's longest running and most popular shows thanks to the high stakes the ships often face.

On top of potentially life-threatening injuries and incredibly stressful situations, the crews of Deadliest Catch have also had their fair share of close calls, from equipment risking injuries to the crew and damage to the ship to harrowing life-or-death situations determined by split-second action. No matter the situation, each moment is a reminder of the job's high stakes and that sometimes, a split second can make a huge difference in outcomes.

10 Northwestern's Loose Hook

Season 15, episode 4, "single point of failure".

With Sig Hansen 's daughter Mandy in charge and on her own aboard the Northwestern , a trailer bag line snagged on a hook, but the ship was moving too fast for them to fix it safely and Mandy wasn’t aware the crew was trying to get her attention to slow the ship down. The line then snapped and shot towards the crew. When Sig returned to the helm, he used it as a teaching moment for Mandy, explaining he didn’t want anyone to get hurt on her watch.

Loose hooks are just one of the many dangers onboard the ships of Deadliest Catch , and this incident is a great example of why a loose hook could very well lead to a severe injury or even death, just as similar incidents have in the past. The incident also demonstrated how crucial communication is on ships, a lesson Sig then aimed to drive home to prevent any similar accidents from happening again.

9 Loose Pot Nearly Hit a Deckhand on the Kodiak

Season 8, episode 9, "nowhere to go but down".

Aboard the Kodiak , a line on a crab pot snapped under the added weight of ice, causing the pot to come loose and nearly hit Captain “Wild” Bill Wichrowski ’s son, Zack Larson , just as he was describing his position behind the pot as “the danger zone” and asked his fellow crew to be careful not to let the pot kill him. If the pot had more momentum, it could’ve crushed Zack as he stood between it and the side of the boat.

Crab pots are extremely dangerous due to their weight, even when empty, and getting hit by one could cause serious injuries. Zack was fortunate the pot just narrowly missed him , while Wild Bill himself commented on the guilt he would’ve felt if his own child had been injured working on his boat. But the incident wasn’t the only one involving a crab pot for Wild Bill, nor the only one on the show.

8 Sprained Ankle Aboard the Cornelia Marie

Season 17, episode 14, "the crush".

As the weather worsened while the Cornelia Marie attempted to outrun an ice pack, the crew continued to race to pull in crab pots. While they worked, the ship was pummeled by a wave full of 80,000 gallons of water, sending engineer Taylor Jensen across the ship and causing him to roll his ankle, resulting in a sprain. Jensen immediately headed below deck to get medical attention as waves continued to toss the ship.

Although the incident resulted in an injury and clearly left Jensen in pain, it could’ve been much, much worse. A sprained ankle is pretty minor considering the other possibilities , and Jensen himself was concerned that it was actually broken. It was also the most minor of the numerous painful injuries Jensen endured on the show, which also included his finger being ripped open, leading fans to conclude he was the unluckiest person on the show.

7 The Time Bandit Encountered Floating Debris

Season 17, episode 19, "wicked game".

While the Time Bandit was out on open water, it encountered a large piece of floating debris, at first assumed to be a dead whale but later revealed to be part of a tree estimated to weigh 3,000 pounds. As the ship moved closer, the crew joked about what they thought it could be but also became concerned about the damage it could cause if it collided with the ship, or another one which wasn’t expecting to see it. Deckhand Freddy dove in to help pull it in.

The encounter proved there are a number of dangers out at sea , not including the sea itself. If the debris had struck the Time Bandit or another ship, it could’ve done serious damage, resulting in expensive repairs or even injuries, if the damage was severe enough. But it was also a nice lighthearted moment for the show, with the crew all showcasing their senses of humor as they approached the object.

6 Buoy Line Wrapped Around Deckhand's Leg

Season 7, episode 3, "old age & treachery".

Aboard the Wizard , a buoy line wrapped around greenhorn Paul Edgren ’s legs and nearly pulled him overboard, but he was saved by his fellow deckhands. Paul took responsibility for the incident and cited complacency as the cause, and he was determined to never repeat the mistake. Captain Keith Colburn viewed the incident as part of a string of bad luck. The ship was far behind on hitting their quota for the season.

Paul’s incident was a great example of how crucial it is to pay attention onboard fishing boats, especially to something as seemingly simple as where someone puts their feet and making sure they don’t pick them up. It also demonstrated how fast accidents can happen, but it was also a testament to how fast his fellow crew members could think and act. And while superstitions play some role for all boats and captains, the moment highlighted Keith’s personal beliefs.

5 The Wizard Was Almost Hit

Season 15, episode 20, "dead or alive".

After offloading their crab, the Wizard was about to head out of the harbor just as a much larger ship—twice the size of the Wizard—was heading in. Although Captain Monte Colburn stopped the ship, strong winds kept it moving and made steering difficult, but he managed to keep the Wizard out of the ship’s path. Monte was visibly shaken when he saw how close they were, but took it in stride.

Of all the close calls on Deadliest Catch , this was one of the most intense, it was one of the many instances in which the weather had a significant impact on the boats and a captain proved his skill. If the Wizard had collided with the larger ship, the results could’ve been catastrophic, and as the larger ship went by, Monte got a scary glimpse of just how close a call it really was.

4 Cornelia Marie 's Broken Crane

Season 15, episode 13, "crane wreck".

In the middle of a storm, the Cornelia Marie ’s crane malfunctioned, with an 800-pound crab pot still attached to it, the crane whipped around the deck, repeatedly hitting the sides of the wheelhouse. After some time and effort, the crew was able to get a line on the pot and bring it under control. But the pot was still not fully under control, and as it continued to swing, it hit Jensen in the head.

The heavy crab pots presented enough danger on their own, the rogue crane merely made things worse, and although the crew was lucky it didn’t damage the ship or its equipment, the same couldn’t be said for Jensen . His head injury was exactly the sort of thing they were trying to prevent. Still, it could’ve been much worse, and Jensen was lucky it wasn’t. But it was neither the first nor last close call for him.

3 Back-to-Back Close Calls on the Aleutian Lady

Season 20, episode 5, "twice bitten, twice shy".

On the Aleutian Lady , deckhand Nico had a close call with a wave knocking him down, and he feared another similar situation if he returned to deck, but he overcame his fears and got back to work in the final days of the fishing season. A mere 18 hours later, Nico was in harm’s way a second time when the crab table was off its tracks and hurtled towards him, leading Nico to storm below deck in a rage.

Nico’s fears were understandable, and unfortunately, they were proven to be justified. One close call in a day would be bad enough, but a second was surely terrifying. While he was able to keep his sense of humor about the first incident with the wave, the second with the table proved to be too much. Nico’s outburst was understandable.

2 The Summer Bay Almost Capsized

Season 17, episode 22, "the ultimate price".

As the Summer Bay was ready to dock to offload crab and end the season, it encountered rough wind and waves, which began to engulf the deck, leading Wild Bill to order everyone below and decide to turn around. As the waves became even more dangerous, the ship overturned and nearly capsized. Although everyone was unharmed, the ship was left a mess, with supplies scattered everywhere below deck and debris above.

Danger isn’t just out on the open ocean, even when docking, even when their season is nearly over, the ships can find themselves in precarious situations , just as the Summer Bay did. Nearly every moment was intense, from waves crashing on deck as the crew was tossed around below to the very moment the ship overturned. The fact that Wild Bill had to ask if everyone was onboard spoke to how dangerous the situation was.

1 The Time Bandit Rescued a Deckhand

Season 3, episode 4, "cheating death".

The Time Bandit encountered another fishing vessel while at sea, and the crew watched in shock as a deckhand fastened pots to the side of the ship in the midst of tumultuous seas. Captain Jonathan Hillstrand watched as the deckhand disappeared under the water and immediately sounded an alarm for help. His crew sprang into action to pull the man onboard and succeeded, saving his life. Although the man was overwhelmed and in shock, he was uninjured.

Deadliest Catch often makes it clear just how dangerous crab fishing is even in the best of circumstances , and this intense moment was a perfect example of what can go wrong, and how quickly it can happen. It was impressive to watch how fast the Time Bandit ’s crew reacted, and it was easy to imagine how much worse the situation could’ve been and the numerous things that could’ve happened to the deckhand, including death.

Luxury yacht sinks off Sicily, leaving U.K. tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 Americans among those missing

By Anna Matranga

Updated on: August 20, 2024 / 7:47 PM EDT / CBS News

Rome  — Six people, including two U.S. nationals, a British technology entrepreneur and one of his daughters, were still missing Tuesday after a large luxury sailing yacht sank off the coast of the southern Italian island of Sicily during a violent storm. The 184-foot Bayesian had been anchored about half a mile off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, with 22 people on board — 10 crew members and 12 passengers.

The vessel sank at about 5 a.m. local time (11 p.m. Eastern, Sunday) after being hit by a possible waterspout spawned by the storm. Italian media said the winds snapped the boat's single mast, unbalancing the vessel and causing it to capsize.

Fifteen of those on board managed to escape the yacht and were rescued by a Dutch-flagged vessel that was anchored in the immediate vicinity. They were brought ashore by Italian Coast Guard and firefighters.

One body — an unidentified male — was recovered, but six people remained missing, including British software magnate Mike Lynch, once described as Britain's Bill Gates.

Lynch was acquitted in June of fraud charges in the U.S. that could have landed him with a decades-long prison sentence. In an unusual twist, Lynch's co-defendant in that fraud case, who was also acquitted, died Saturday after being hit by a car while out jogging in England.

Lynch's teenage daughter Hannah was also among those missing, along with Lynch's American lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant district attorney in New York, and his wife Neda. British banker Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, was also still missing Tuesday.

Hewlett Packard Rotten Deal Trial

Among the survivors was a 1-year-old British girl who was being treated at a nearby hospital along with her parents. They were doing well, according to Italian media.

"For two seconds I lost my child to the sea, then I immediately was able to grab her again in the fury of the waves," the girl's mother, identified only as Charlotte, was quoted as saying by Italy's ANSA news agency. "I held on to her tightly in the stormy sea. Many were screaming. Luckily the life raft opened up and 11 of us managed to get aboard."

"It was terrible," she told ANSA. "In just a few minutes the boat was hit by a very strong wind, and sunk soon thereafter."

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Dutch vessel that came to the rescue, told ANSA he had been anchored near the Bayesian.

"When the storm was over we noticed that the ship behind us was gone, and then we saw a red flare, so my first mate and I went to the position and we found this life raft drifting, and in the life raft was also a little baby and the wife of the owner."

Recovery efforts were back underway Tuesday, with speedboats, helicopters and divers continuing to search for the missing — as well as for answers, as to how a state-of-the-art superyacht could disappear in a flash.

According to Italian media, Fire Brigade divers reached the boat and saw bodies trapped inside some of the cabins, but they had been unable to recover any of the victims from inside the vessel by Tuesday, due to obstructions. The Bayesian appeared to have sunk in an area with a depth of about 160 feet.

Witnesses said the boat sank quickly.

"I was at home when the tornado hit," fisherman Pietro Asciutto told a local news outlet. "I immediately closed all the windows. Then I saw the boat, it had only one mast, it was very large. I suddenly saw it sink... The boat was still floating, then suddenly it disappeared. I saw it sink with my own eyes."

The director-general of Sicily's civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, confirmed to CBS News partner BBC News  that three of the six people still missing Monday were British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, whose company Autonomy Corporation PLC was acquired in 2011 by HP ; one of his daughters, Hannah Lynch, who is believed to be 18; and the boat's chef, Ricardo Thomas.

CBS News has seen corporate documentation showing a company called Revtom, solely owned by Lynch's wife Angela Bacares, who was among those rescued from the accident, as the owner of the yacht that capsized off Sicily.

While the yacht was a privately owned pleasure boat, the waters around the island have claimed many lives over the last decade.

Dozens of migrants have died attempting to reach Sicily and smaller Italian islands in the region. Sicily sits only about 100 miles from the east coast of Tunisia in north Africa, and the Mediterranean crossing has been a frequent site of both nautical rescues and disasters as smugglers routinely send small boats overloaded with desperate people into the sea.

Alex Sundby , Joanne Stocker and Chris Livesay contributed to this report.
