A Buying Guide To Finding the Best Boat Wax

A good boat deserves a good shine. This guide will cover everything you need to know about boat wax, what it is, and why you should apply it.

What Is Boat Wax?

Boat wax is a product used to shine and protect the hull of a boat. Depending on the type of wax, this product is either used after cleaning the boat or functions as a cleaning formula itself. You can apply boat wax by hand or with the help of a tool such as a buffer.

Should You Apply Wax to the Bottom of Your Boat?

Because wax is something that many people do for the visual effect, you may be wondering if you need to apply wax to the bottom of your boat. It depends on your personal preference. While the wax job won’t be visible while the boat’s at sea, the wax itself does have protective properties. It prevents dirt and other substances from easily getting onto your boat’s bottom side which saves you time and effort in cleaning.

But there’s a catch. Boats become just a little bit slower if the wax is applied to the bottom. While it’s not by a huge margin, it’s something worth considering if you like boating fast. To determine if you should apply wax to the bottom of your boat, you’ll need to ask yourself the following question: would you rather have a protected boat or a fast boat?

Why You Should Consider Purchasing Boat Wax

It makes your boat shine.

Boats are the proud possessions of many boaters. Since a lot of boats sell for thousands of dollars, it’s a significant financial investment. It comes as no surprise that many boaters want to keep their boat looking like new for as long as possible. There are many ways to preserve your boat’s condition, but one way to make it look good is by applying wax to the hull.

Wax leaves the boat with a shine and gloss that isn’t normally present. The shine fades away after a while, but until then the boat will look a lot nicer. Even though boat wax does offer protective benefits, many boaters apply wax simply for the visual effect.

It protects the boat

Boat wax also protects your boat. When applied to the top side of the boat, wax can minimize UV damage from the sun. UV damage is nearly unavoidable without protection, as your boat will be exposed to the sun’s rays throughout the day. Applying wax slows down and minimizes the damage, prolonging the life of your boat.

Wax can also protect the bottom of the boat. While waxing your boat does make it a little bit slower, it also makes the boat easier to clean and minimizes dirt buildup. If you’re fine with sacrificing a bit of speed for an easier time cleaning in the future, it may be worth giving the bottom half of your boat a little wax.

It removes oxidation

Oxidation occurs quite often on boats that are left out for too long in the water. This is a process that can be reversed and, with the help of certain boat waxes, you can remove the oxidation entirely. Since wax also leaves the boat with a protective coating, it reduces future oxidation as well.

People Also Asked

First, ensure your boat is clean and dry to maximize wax adhesion. Apply a small amount of boat wax to a clean applicator pad or microfiber cloth, then work it into the surface of the boat using circular motions. Allow the wax to haze over before buffing it off with a clean, dry cloth to reveal a shiny and protected surface.

Boat wax should typically be applied every 3 to 6 months to maintain optimal protection and shine, although the frequency may vary depending on factors such as usage, exposure to environmental elements, and the type of wax used.

The shelf life of boat wax can vary depending on the formulation and storage conditions, but most boat waxes have a shelf life of around 1 to 2 years when stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

What To Consider When Buying A Boat Wax

The 6 main factors to consider when buying a boat wax are listed below.

  • Type Of Boat Surface : A factor to consider when buying a boat wax is the type of surface or material marine wax is compatible with. Some waxes for boats are only compatible with specific materials like fiberglass, gel coats or teak surfaces. Ensure the boat wax you pick is compatible with the material of your vessel and the material you intend to use the wax on
  • Ease Of Application : When choosing a boat wax, how easy it is to apply to your vessel is another important factor to consider. Some of the heavy-duty marine waxes are much harder to apply and will require a lot of elbow grease and scrubbing compared to more lightweight spray polishes
  • Size Of The Vessel : Top boat wax comes in containers from 16 ounces to 55 gallons. The size of the boat will play an important role when deciding on which boat wax to choose. A larger vessel will typically require more heavy-duty waxes in larger containers with a higher coverage area capability whereas smaller boats like dinghies will typically require smaller container boat waxes
  • Main Purpose : When considering what boat wax to choose, look at what the main purpose of the boat wax is. A boat owner may want a wax that offers UV protection whereas another may want a wax that adds an extra shine to the boat or protects against oxidation. Different boat wax products offer different things and it's important to choose only the wax that will help you achieve your goal when waxing your boat
  • Price : Top boat waxes are priced between $20 for a small 16 ounce container to $1,400 for a 55 gallon container so boat wax buyers will need to consider the price they are willing to pay when purchasing boat wax
  • pH Level : A pH level of below 7 is consider more acidic than a pH level of 7 or higher. Boat owners need to choose the acidity of the boat wax they want

BoatingLAB Tests: Waxes

  • By Randy Vance
  • Updated: March 1, 2012

I stood in the marine store and looked at 75 feet of shelving lined with dozens of bottles of boat wax, reading descriptive words like premium, ultra, UV protection, nano technology, exceptional, durable and easy-on. In some products, the label carried three or four superlatives. The average price for a 16-ounce bottle was $22.96, not counting the $4 bottle of Turtle Wax we tested. The highest was more than $55. What a dilemma. You know it and I know it, but what we don’t know is what really matters when buying a wax for the boat. What works best?

Bottom line is that, at an average $1.44 per ounce with between 8 and 10 ounces required for waxing a 21-foot boat, that’s a pretty stiff bottom line. So BoatingLAB decided to see who put on the best shine.

How We Tested

To measure shine and application qualities, we taped off eight spots on the white gelcoat panel of a well-oxidized boat. We used enough wax to coat each spot of roughly 144 square inches and rubbed it in until we had created a uniform coating on each test panel, taking 90 to 120 seconds per spot. We let the spots dry and then buffed. We then reapplied the same waxes to the same spots for the second round of gloss tests. Most waxes boosted their score, as we expected after the second trial.

To measure the gloss, we held a black ruler with yellow hash marks against the gelcoat and peered down the side of the boat to see how many inches of the ruler we could read in the reflection.

Some of our waxes were designated “cleaner waxes,” a moniker that suggests it is better equipped to remove oxidation and chalk from gelcoat. Some were simply polishes, but we used each the same way, regardless of designation.

How We Scored

Gloss After One Coat of Wax – 1, 2, 3 or 4 (inches), 4 being best.

Gloss After Two Coats of Wax – 1, 2, 3 or 4, 4 being best.

Color Shift of Panel After Wax – 0 for heavy shift through 5 for no color shift.

Cost Rank – We scored costs high, medium and low, high earning a 1, medium a 2 and low a 3.

These scores were added to get what we called an “overall approval factor,” the higher the better.

We found each liquid wax applied easily in under two minutes, which resulted in no score awarded for application time.

We would love to have tested wax durability, but leaving the test boat in a checkerboard state of slickness wasn’t going to be acceptable to our guinea pig’s owner. Darn the luck!

marine polish

Attwood Premium Marine Polish

Promises: UV inhibitors; biodegradable bottle

Not a cleaner wax, the instructions recommend using Attwood’s Cleaner Wax on oxidized surfaces before application. We skipped the cleaner and applied.

Results: A combination of impressive shine, no color shift and modest cost gave this wax an overall high score. It’s one of only three that did not improve gloss with a second coat. We needed a cleaner wax to do that.

marine polish, boat polish

Promises: Radiant finish; incomparable durability

This is a cleaner wax, marketed to provide a hard, long-lasting shine, and also marketed heavily to the recreational vehicle and aviation industry. It is sold to remove dirt, grime and oxidation.

Results: Collinite’s thin liquid wax didn’t have a flow nozzle, so dispensing without spilling took care. We were surprised we saw no improvement in reflectivity after a second coat. Its cost rank was above average.

Fleetwax

Promises: No ammonia; safely cleans, polishes, protects

Advertised on the back label as a cleaner, Flitz was one of two waxes formulated for metal but recommended by the label for fiberglass.

Results: Scoring an average “2” in reflectivity, there was no improvement after a second coat. The green dyed wax left a green tinge on the gelcoat. The hull staining and high cost factor earned it one of our lowest scores.

Flitz, boat polish, fiberglass polish

Promises: Protection from UV damage; enriched color and shine

Advertised to remove light oxidation, the product description suggests using the wax only after the surface has been cleaned and restored to a “like new” or “average” finish.

Results: The wax worked well and quickly with good cleaning capabilities to remove oxidation, boosting shine. It has a clean, pinelike aroma, rather than the petroleum odor most of the other waxes had.

boat wax, boat polish, premium wax, marine wax

Promises: Protection from UV rays; exceptional durability and gloss; pleasant tropical scent

Touted as using “reactive chemistry that bonds to your boat’s surface,” Scotchgard’s label makes no reference to cleaner qualities.

Results: The shine accomplished and the price rank put it in the middle group of contenders. We found the scent of the product to be petroleum-based with a hint of alcohol, not tropical.

liquid wax, marine wax, marine polish, boat wax

Promises: Hard shell lasting up to 12 months

We don’t ordinarily fear using auto wax on boats, but a neutral color or no dye in the wax would be a smarter choice for Turtle Wax, even if that’s inconsistent with its marketing mechanisms, i.e. green like a turtle.

Results: Its high luster saved it from the dismally low score it should have gotten. It tinted the white gelcoat green, completely negating the cost/shine benefit factor by doing so.

turtle wax, boat wax, marine wax, best boat waxes

Promises: Biodegradable; superior protection; citrus scent

Not a cleaner wax, the citrus base of the wax is reported to be more environmentally friendly than petroleum bases. We could not verify that claim.

Results: Its citrus odor made it pleasant to work with. It was the thickest, creamiest liquid wax we tested and so easy to get just where we wanted it. Its value price (fourth in cost factor) and shine gave it a high overall score.

boat wax, marine wax

Promises: No rubbing or buffing; nonslick wax finish — even blood hoses off

This petroleum-based “wax” has an oily character. It is advertised to work on fiberglass and to be particularly beneficial to nonskid decking. Application is to wipe on and to not wipe off.

Results: Its high cost and low luster lowered its score significantly. It also stained the gelcoat an oily brown — exactly the color of the compound. There was no discoloration of metal, and we recommend this product for protecting aluminum marine structures.

Best boat wax: 5 top products to make your topsides shine

There are few jobs more satisfying on a boat than applying boat wax to tired, chalky gelcoat. Turning a faded, stained and dull fibreglass hull into a shining thing of beauty is surprisingly easy with the right techniques and products

Many boat owners simply apply boat wax to the topsides once a year, and while this will look good for a short time, to get a really good result it’s worth taking a little more time over the job.

There are, broadly speaking, three stages:

  • Cleaning: If you try and apply boat wax to a dirty hull then you run the risk of damaging the surface by grinding in dirt and grime. First step, then is to give the hull a really good wash and clean. You can remove yellow waterline staining with an oxalic acid based product, or for less dirty hulls then a simple boat shampoo or boat wash will do the trick. Check out our guide to the best hull cleaners .
  • Polishing: Once the hull is dry, you can move onto the polishing stage. If there are any areas of chalky or oxidised gelcoat, it’s worth using an abrasive cleaner like a rubbing compound. These cut back the top surface of the gelcoat to reveal an unoxidised layer beneath, leaving a clean, shiny surface ready for boat wax.
  • Waxing: This is the important step that will seal in the shine and keep your boat’s hull protected for a good long time. It might look good after a polish, but applying a good quality boat wax will seal the hull and block UV light from causing any further damage.

So that’s the process, but a look at the chandlery shelves shows a bewildering array of boat wax products. There is also some inconsistency in the naming, with the words ‘wax’ and ‘polish’ used interchangeably. But which boat wax to choose? We’ve selected a few options that should help you decide.

Starbrite premium marine polish with ptef.

Starbrite Premium Boat Wax

Best boat wax for longevity

Starbrite sell this as ‘the best polish you can buy’ and claim it will last 4 to 5 times longer than other marine waxes.

It has UV inhibitors to stop fading and oxidation, and offers good protection and shine. Starbrite recommend a second application within 30 days for best results.

Starbrite Presoftened Boat Wax

Starbrite Presoftened Boat Wax

A large tub of softened carnauba wax is just what a tired hull needs and is easy to apply with a buffing machine or by hand and cloth.

It can be used as the final stage in a polishing process, or just as an ‘all in one’. It can be applied in direct sunlight, and used on fibreglass, aluminium and painted surfaces.

We’ve seen good results with this product and it’s easy to polish off to a smear-free finish.

3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Medium Cutting Compound and Wax

3M ProtectIt

Best all-in-one for oxidised gelcoat

The period leading up to launch day is always stressful and many jobs end up getting pushed off the to-do list – so anything that can cut the time and effort needed is welcome.

Two-in-one products like this highly regarded 3M cutting compound and wax are an excellent solution, and while the outcome won’t quite match a true three-step process, the results can still be impressive.

This particular product is a medium-grade cutting compound combined with a wax, which means it will cut through oxidation and minor scratches and leave the hull shiny and protected.

Starbrite Sea Safe Boat Wash and Wax

Starbrite Sea Safe Wash

Best for a quick clean

While the best results are achieved with a proper Clean, Polish and Wax process, most of us are short of time. That’s where products like this come in.

An ‘all in one’ is never going to produce comparable results to a lot of elbow grease, but if you use this every time you wash your boat down she will stay in reasonable shape throughout the year.

It claims to clean and shine in one step and is environmentally friendly, which is an important consideration when it comes to washing your boat down in the water.

Buying and using the proper boat wax or cleaner is key to preserving showroom shine and protecting your boat from the elements. When you’re out on the water, you’re willing to brave some extreme conditions and put your boat in tight spots if you think that’ll help you catch a trophy fish, but the results are often ugly. Marine debris leaves stains, dock pilings can result in scratches, and the perpetual and cumulative effects of the sun result in fading.

Best Overall: 3M Marine Cleaner and Wax

Best environmentally safe: hula boatcare hang ten cleaner wax, best paste: meguiar’s flagship premium marine paste wax, best for fixing light scratches: 3m finesse-it glaze, best for stained white hulls: star brite instant hull cleaner, best spray and wipe cleaner: bass boat saver.

By taking a few minutes each time you come off the water to assess and revitalize your boat, you can preserve it. That means maintaining the good looks that attracted you in the first place and preventing water intrusion or any other sort of damage. In other words, it’s possible to have it all—a boat that looks great and can still go four-wheeling as necessary.

While I’ve passed some winter hours by giving my bass boats a full and time-consuming detailing, I’ll be the first to admit that I’d rather spend more time on tackle than cleaning my vessel. That’s especially true when I come off the water after a long, hot, or rainy day, and particularly when the fishing has been tough. The preference would be to just strap down the trailer and ease into traffic in search of a shower, a beer, and some couch time. That’s why it’s critical when picking the best boat wax or cleaner to assess how much time you’ll really spend keeping your chariot in shape. Will you wipe it down after each trip? Every other trip? Apply a wax annually, quarterly, or monthly? An honest answer goes a long way toward maximizing your time and your investment. Here are some of the best waxes I’ve found for getting the job done.

Things to Consider Before Buying Boat Wax

The key is finding the best boat wax for you and your boat, so here are factors to consider when making your decision.

Size of Your Boat

It’s a lot easier to “spray and wipe” a big boat than it is to wax and rewax every corner, nook, and cranny carefully. Additionally, getting under the hull on the trailer or in a slip can be difficult. Figure out how you get the most bang for your buck, given your time constraints and how much fiberglass geography you have in front of you.

Color of Your Boat

Personally, I’ll never own another mostly-white boat again, because it was impossible to avoid small scuffs and stains, and they drove me crazy. Some anglers prefer all-white, though. For them, they need special products not only to minimize or eliminate stains, but also to prevent yellowing.

Application Method

If you have the time and the energy for frequent full waxings, an orbital buffer (used carefully) will do a tremendous job, but there’s no reason not to use a dedicated sponge or microfiber cloth. It just may take longer to get the same effect. No matter what, make sure there’s no dirt or grit there, because grinding that in will just make things worse.

Environmental Impact

We’ve always had an obligation to be vigilant in this area, but it’s especially true today. We’ve seen the impact that harmful chemicals have had on various fisheries, and it’s in our best interest to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

Key Features

  • Sizes: 16.9 oz., 33.8 oz., and 1 gallon
  • Two-in-one product easy to apply
  • Can be applied by hand or machine

Why It Made the Cut

Widely available and proven protection make this an easy choice for all boat owners.

  • All-in-one formula
  • Removes light to medium oxidation
  • Can also be used on cars and RVs
  • Not quite as protective as a heavy-duty paste wax

Product Description

If you’re looking for the perfect combination of ease of use, quality, versatility, and protectiveness, a two-in-one cleaner boat wax is probably your best choice. Used quarterly, this will allow your boat to bead water, and with an occasional wipe-down, it will look like new. 3M products are time-tested and readily available, and this one is non-toxic. I’ve had a big jug of it on the garage shelf for a while, and it remains viscous and consistent, ready to spread on whenever I’m ready to make the commitment of time. I do so with a sponge and then wipe down the hazy excess with a microfiber cloth, but you can also use an orbital polisher if you want even more precision.

  • Sizes: 16 ounces or 1 gallon
  • Water-repellent UV barrier
  • Made in the U.S.

Hula Boatcare products mean it’s possible to keep your boat looking good while still being a responsible steward of our natural resources.

  • Creates water-repellent barrier
  • Smells good
  • Don’t have to worry about runoff harming the environment
  • Slightly more expensive than some similar products

Hula’s products provide a smell reminiscent of the islands, and allow you to keep your boat remarkably clean without worrying as much about where all of that runoff water will go. We depend on clean waterways and healthy fish to feed our recreational needs, and that gives us a special obligation to make sure that our cleanliness doesn’t mean biting the hand that feeds us. Harsh chemicals may make the job easier, but they’ll leave you drenched in guilt if you’re anything like me. This solves the problem by providing all of the benefits and none of the burdens.

Best Paste Wax

  • Size: 11 ounces
  • Long-lasting polymer protection
  • Built-in UV protection

When you’re ready to really give the boat a protective coat, this paste wax is like an invisible suit of armor.

Pros

  • Creates incredible deep close
  • Removes light oxidation and scratches
  • Does not leave swirls behind
  • Like all paste waxes, can be labor-intensive

Once a year, usually in the winter, I roll up my sleeves and get to work, trying to make my several-year-old boat shine like new again. I’m not as dedicated on a trip-to-trip basis as I used to be, and I’m aware that I can overcome some of that growing laziness with one day of hard labor. If there’s even the slightest sign of oxidation, this retards that process and restores the factory colors to new. One 11-ounce tin goes a remarkably long way, even if you slosh it on heavily, but you need only a little to let it work its restorative luster.

Best Wax for Fixing Light Scratches

  • Sizes: 8 ounces, 12 ounces, and 1 gallon
  • Wax-free and silicone-free
  • Works best with a buffer, and 3M makes specific buffing pads

Whether it’s running into debris or bouncing your boat off the dock, minor scratches are an eyesore, and this product makes them go away.

  • Light abrasive makes minor imperfections disappear
  • Cost effective
  • Creates a high-gloss finish
  • Not meant for everyday cleaning

If you’re going to put serious hours on your boat, at some point, it’ll end up with a scratch. While deep cuts from nails or other sharp items may require costly fiberglass work, Finesse-it gets rid of lighter scratches and marks with a minimum of elbow grease. They make specialized buffing pads to apply it with a power buffer, but over the years, I’ve found that even a simple sponge or one of the best microfiber cloths allows you to remove some blemishes without much effort. Having some of this best boat wax for restoring in the garage makes me a better angler, because I’m not afraid to fish back in thick buck brush, or make a run through fields of light marine flotsam . I know that this stuff has my back.

Best for Stained White Hulls

  • Sizes: 32 ounces and 1 gallon
  • Removes stains around water line
  • Safe on fiberglass and paint
  • Apply with sponge or sprayer

No-scrub application returns whites and off-whites to their original stain-free luster.

  • Doesn’t require any scrubbing
  • Removes scum lines
  • Eliminates hard stains
  • Mild toxicity, so use rubber gloves to apply

When I bought my first bass boat in 1996, a mentor told me to wipe it down after every use, because “once a scum line sets it, it’s hard to remove.” If you’ve failed to heed that advice, or have particular nasty rust or fish blood stains on your hull, this product can be a lifesaver. You just apply it with a sponge or sprayer, being careful not to get it on your hands, let it sit for a couple of minutes, then hose it off. It is suggested that you add polish or boat wax after that, but if you skip that step, at least you can go this route again and again. It’s comparatively inexpensive, too.

Best Spray and Wipe Cleaner

  • Sizes: 24 ounces and 1-gallon
  • Pleasant smell
  • UV protectant

This is the best boat product for wiping down at the end of the day.

  • Removes stains and blemishes easily
  • Can be used on fiberglass, trailer, tires, and seats
  • Completely biodegradable
  • Not a true wax

Bass Boat Saver has been my go-to, end-of-day wipe-down substance for well over a decade because it turns removing scum and stains into a quick and easy task. I carry it with a microfiber cloth and use it on every part of my bass boat to great effect. It’s not necessarily a replacement for one of the best boat waxes, but this will keep your boat in tiptop shape between hardcore waxing efforts. It produces a deep and remarkable shine, bringing out the true and original colors of your gelcoat, no matter how old your boat might be.

Polish is used to repair and restore your boat’s exterior. Wax is used to protect your boat.

Two coats of paste wax is plenty to protect your boat. Most boat owners apply boat wax two to four times per year.

If you keep your boat in a garage, you can get away with waxing it one or twice a year. But, if you’re a regular user and your boat is kept in direct sunlight a wax every three to four months will keep your gelcoat looking new.

Methodology

Since 1996, I’ve owned seven bass boats, five of them new, and the fiberglass has always been in good shape when I’ve sold them—in the case of the two used boats, probably better than when I picked them up. That’s because I’ve put a little bit of sweat equity into each one, using the proper products for the job. Figure out how much time you’ll devote to this process (hint: more is better, no matter what), but don’t worry about muddy water or floating debris. It’s part of the game, not an insurmountable obstacle.

Final Thoughts

A little care goes a long way when it comes to waxing and cleaning boats. As someone who tends to push my fishing days until the very last minute, a quick wipe down often seems like an insurmountable task. Try to do it every time with a spray wax or cleaner, and then supplement that with a full-blown boat wax job whenever you have the time to get the job done. If you put these best boat wax products to use, you’ll thank me at resale time.

Best Boat Wax: Unbiased Review

Waxing your boat is one of those necessary evils.  Nobody likes to do it but it is critical to protect the finish and keep your boat looking nice.  While there are certain brands that are popular with car owners, what is the best wax for a boat?  To answer this question, we surveyed boaters to identify the best boat wax brands.  We also discuss some of the different types of waxes and when to use each.

Is Your Boat Ready to Wax?

Waxing your fiberglass boat is really about applying a protective layer  to shield the gelcoat from harmful UV rays and other elements.  Left untreated, the gelcoat will breakdown or “oxidize” resulting in a dull or chalky finish.  If your boat has some degree of oxidation or other imperfections, then it is important to treat those before adding the wax.  Alternatively, “Cleaner Waxes” or “Restorer Waxes” could address these problems and add a protective layer in one step.  However, these are only appropriate if the issues are fairly minor.  To see a description of the types of cleaning and waxing products and when to use them, see “ Washing and Waxing: How to Detail a Boat “.

Best Boat Wax

In our survey, we asked boaters which brand(s) they use for waxing and how effective is each.  The table below lists the most popular brands used by our 250 respondents.  The average effectiveness rating is also provided.

Best Boat Waxes

  • “Excellent. I just use it between paste waxes to maintain surfaces.”
  • “Slick Mist works great for cleaning up your boat when you come off of the water. On some California lakes you are required to clean and dry your boat before leaving.”
  • “Very easy to use and can wipe surface clean after pulling from water, go wash off and reapply, quick and easy.”

Meguiar's Premium Marine Wax

So what is the best boat wax to use?  Part of the answer depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  If you want the best shine possible, then a good Carnauba wax such as the Collinite Fleetwax is tough to beat.  On the other hand, if you are looking for the longest lasting protection, a polymer sealant such as the Star brite Premium Marine Polish might be right for you. But if you are just looking to touch up your boat between trips, then give the Lucas Oil Slick Mist a try.

What are your thoughts regarding the best wax for a boat?  Do your experiences line up with that of the 250 boaters in my survey?  Let me know in the comments section below.  And, check out my Boat Cleaning 101 article for an overview of the key steps and products to use to clean your boat from bow to stern.

Jerry, could one use the 885 paste for shine and then apply the Meguirs polymer to make it last longer

Great article!

' src=

Thanks for your comments. Combining the 885 paste with a polymer sounds good in theory but I wonder how well the polymer would bond to the boat if there is already a coat of wax on it. My guess is that it might not help it to last much longer but don’t know for sure. Have you tried combining the two?

' src=

Easy, peasy. Our boat hasn’t been waxed in seasons. We cleaned it up with the meguiars 1 step compunction and then used this wax with a micro cloth bonnet on a polishing wheel. It looked and felt terrific. Work in 2-3ft square sections. Polish, use 1 rag to remove excess (the” wet rag”), then 1 rag to buff the haze (the “dry rag). This worked really well.

“This boat gives you a fast, dry, and smooth ride.”  (Overall Rating: 10)
“Wide beam and large cockpit.  Love the open feel.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“The Formula brand is a well-built boat that uses high end components and has things such as fume detection for the bilge and other items like that are not seen on other brands. The seats are very comfortable and both interior and exterior are holding up extremely well. The boat handles great and has a very solid ride.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“Not many people are very familiar with Bryant but they build a quality boat that is a bit more affordable than some of the other premium names. I have had this boat 5 years now and it looks great and rides well.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“It’s the best all-weather boat I’ve owned for lakes. Handles just about anything that’s marginal to get back to the ramp safely. And plenty of storage room, actually it could be too much room at times.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“When I bought it , it was probably the best deal one could find for a fiberglass bass boat with absolutely no wood in it. The boat and Yamaha 70 have performed flawlessly for 12 years.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“This model falls into the category that most salt water fishermen refer to as “Bay Boat”. It has a center console which provides tremendous stability and a deeper hull than a “flats” boat for smoother ride on choppy water. The boat is made for fishing and has very few comfort features for cruising. It is not my favorite hull because it draws a little more water than some of the other shallow water bay boats such as Pathfinder.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“Great boat, solid ride… great bay boat for fishing. Fast with Yamaha 300!!” (Overall Rating: 10)
“Excellent high-end Pontoon Boat with a 400hp R Mercury outboard Racing motor. Too nice to be a Pontoon Boat. Rear twin electric recliners.” (Overall Rating: 9)
“We had a lot of fun using this boat the past summer. it can accommodate nine persons, has comfortable seating for all passengers, is easy to board for both passengers and water skiers, handles well in rough water, is easy to launch and dock, looks great on the water and drew lots of compliments from all who saw it on the water.” (Overall Rating: 10)
“Great boat and a great price point. Carolina flare and deadrise makes for an exceptionally dry boat which I would expect from any Carolina boat builder that builds primarily for the Atlantic. This is not a shallow draft boat for its size, however….I would say it drafts in 12″ +.” (Overall Rating: 8)

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

Testers they compare 10 hull waxes-from runny soft to super hard pastes-in terms of gloss and ease of application..

best sailboat wax

Practical Sailor tested a field of 10 tubs of paste waxes for ease of application, gloss, texture, finish, and price. Most of the products did a fairly good job of producing initial shine. The two waxes with the most glossy fiberglass test patch were not the easiest to apply nor were they the least expensive. The boat wax test included marine paste waxes and car waxes-some with carnauba-from Meguiars, Turtle Wax, 3M, Collinite, Kit, Mothers, Nu-Finish, and Star brite.

                                                      ****

Thanks to an overwhelming response from readers to our request for recommended wax and polish products for comparison, Practical Sailor is now knee-deep into an update on the subject. We last presented findings of a long-term wax test in November 2004, and that report, “Wax Test Results,” is now posted online under “Tools and Techniques” at www.practical-sailor.com .

Best Boat Wax

You need only dip a toe into this topic to realize that there are almost as many recipes for a glossy hull as there are sailors whod rather do anything than wax their hull. As long as marketeers keep alive our hopes for a glossy finish that will last forever, there will be people who will plunk down hard-earned money for the latest and greatest gelcoat elixir.

We generally define gloss as being the surface ability to reflect light. Gloss, along with ease of application and the ability to repel dirt and water, are the features that  Practical Sailor focused on for this report (see “How We Tested,” page 32).

To contain the subject, we limited the field to paste waxes with high solids that come in a can or tub. These products are meant to be applied after the usual compounding and buffing steps. Among waxes, pastes generally provided the longest-lasting protection in comparisons by Practical Sailor . Upcoming tests will look at bottled waxes, which are quickly becoming more popular than once-common pastes. (Although the term “waxes” is a misnomer in this age of polymer coatings, we use the term loosely to describe this class of products.)

For those with hulls in good condition who are hoping to skip the compounding step, we looked at mildly abrasive two-step cleaner-waxes in March 2007, with Star brite Heavy Duty Cleaner Wax rated best. And for those interested in long-lasting acrylic finishes like Poliglow, we presented the first article in an ongoing test in September 2008. Both of these approaches have their drawbacks and advantages compared to the traditional buff-and-wax routine.

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

“Waxes” do more than add shine. Gelcoat is minutely porous. As it oxidizes, it gets even more porous, breaking down the glossy finish, becoming dull and chalky. It also allows penetration and build-up of dirt, smudge, and marine scum, giving it an aged look in a short time.

A wax or polish delays this process by sealing the pores and protecting against the weathering process. For a more in-depth discussion on the chemistry of gelcoat and the process of decay, see “Plastics Versus Weather: The Nature of a Losing Battle,” in our “Tools and Techniques Section,” at www.practical-sailor.com . At-large Editor Nick Nicholsons step-by-step process for restoring a weathered hull to its former glory, “Offshore Log: Gelcoat Maintenance,” can be found online in the same section.

Before we dig into the results of our paste comparison, a word about car polishes and waxes is in order. Boat gelcoat is different from the hard “clear-coat” finish on todays cars. Most ordinary car waxes do not have the same blend of ingredients to penetrate the gelcoat pores, remove oxidation, and provide a good marine sealant. However, if you have a well-polished hull, some car waxes will serve as a good final layer of protection.

What We Tested

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

Practical Sailor

acquired 10 tubs of paste products from eight manufacturers that were advertised or recommended as boat and car waxes or polish. We looked for traditional cans of paste waxes, and products promoted as a final step in surface finishing/sealing.

Several claimed to have carnauba wax. This hard wax is extracted from leaves of the carnauba palm, grown in northeast Brazil, and has been used for many years in all kinds of products, from dental floss to lipstick. Its high demand makes it expensive.

For years, it was been mixed with beeswax and other solvents to soften it for application. Most true waxes melt above 130 degrees, but carnauba melts around 180 degrees and produces a very hard wax coating. Since all waxes have a melting point in the sun and are easily dissolved by salts, cleaning agents, and others solvents, many manufacturers now are adding synthetic polymers to bind it, soften it, and give it longevity. The percentage of carnauba in paste waxes is going down, and the perception of “paste wax” is changing. It used to be that paste wax was a hard, yellow substance that came in a metal can that required a screwdriver to open. It went on hard, dried to a white powder, and took some work to buff out. But it did produce a great shine.

Today, many manufacturers have abandoned the stiff metal can for a thin plastic container, pre-softened the wax to the point of squishy or simply gone to a liquid formula. As a consequence, most new paste waxes are blended with polymer sealants, silicones, and resins to make a soft, easy-to-apply goop. It is easier to wipe off and also produces both a glossy shine and hard protection.

Our test field of 10 supposedly “paste” waxes is certainly not all-inclusive. We favored those that did well in previous  Practical Sailor tests, those recently recommended, and a couple of promising new ones. We left out many that were rated Poor to Fair in previous tests for glossiness or longevity. Since this test was launched, some new products have been released, and these will be included in an update.

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

3M Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax

Marine Ultra Performance Paste Wax by 3M (No. 09030) comes in the old-style can that must be pried open. It is a hard paste wax that includes carnauba wax, naphtha, and “trade secret siloxanes” (floropolymers, acrylic, silicon, and some UV protection). The can is very specific in advising how “very harmful” the chemicals can be to the skin or if inhaled. The coating is extremely slippery, water repellent, and resists decay by salt and sun. It is one of the harder waxes, but goes on easily and produces an excellent shine.

Bottom line: This wax fared well in this comparison and held up well in our last long-term test. Commonly used in boatyards and by some professional detailers, it is a one of our Recommended products.

Collinite No. 885

Collinite No. 885 Fleetwax for Marine and Aeronautical Finishes is a hard, heavy-duty, non-abrasive paste wax. It was developed to seal and shield against acid rain, salt spray, UV rays, bugs, and dirt. It continues to be a favorite among professional detailers, although many prefer the softer, bottled version. Being a heavier wax, the paste takes some rubbing to get on and some serious buffing to get off, but it does machine buff to a brilliant shine.

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

Bottom line: The top-rated paste in our last test, this product yielded the deepest gloss, but it is the most difficult to apply, is expensive (use sparingly), and the can is prone to rusting if stored on a boat. It is best suited for machine application, but is worth the effort. We recommend it for machine application.

Kit Carnauba Car Wax

Kit Carnauba Car Wax, called a “car detailer,” is a pre-softened natural yellow Carnauba paste wax that claims to have micro-polishing agents for extra shine and durability. It proved too runny and messy compared to the others we tested, and the shine was only fair.

Bottom Line: This product is messy to apply and provided only a moderate gloss.

Meguiars Flagship Premium

Meguiars Flagship Premium Marine Paste wax comes in a twist-top can that includes an applicator sponge. It will remove light oxidation and does provide UV protection. A medium-hard, creamy paste, it was one of the easiest to apply and produced a gloss comparable to that of the Collinite, with less effort.

Bottom line:

Quick to apply, and yielding a glossy finish, this is one of testers two favorites for hand application.

Mothers California Gold Cleaner Wax

Mothers California Gold Carnauba Cleaner Wax touts a hard carnauba wax blend, and it is indeed one of the harder textured pastes tested. It has an interesting musky scent (perhaps a marketing attempt at sex appeal), and despite its hardness, it went on easily and produced a deep gloss.

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

Bottom line: This was one of the favorite hard pastes in this test. We recommend it, despite (or possibly because of) the intoxicating perfume.

Nu-Finish Soft Paste

Nu-Finish Soft Paste is a white, semi-liquid polish that contains no wax, and goes on easily with no rubbing and no buffing. It claims to have five times the protection of regular waxes, can be applied in the sun, and will last a full year under normal conditions. The creamy, somewhat gelatinous substance goes on easily and produced an average to good shine.

Bottom line: Although some  Practical Sailor readers and Consumer Reports have rated this wax well, our testers are so far unimpressed. Long-term results may change that outlook.

Star Brite Premium

Star brite Premium Marine Polish is a very soft goo in a flexible plastic container. Containing PTEF (the chemical equivalent of Teflon) and UV inhibitors, it is touted as a marine cleaner/sealant, with strong cleaning solvents-not a wax. Testers found the paste to be lumpy. (Star brite says this is not normal, suggesting old stock.) Easy to apply, it produced an unremarkable finish.

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

Bottom line: Initial results did not justify the higher price, in our opinion.

Star Brite Presoftened Boat Wax

Star brite Pre-softened Boat Wax is also a very soft, semi-liquid in a rustproof plastic container, and lives up to its name as pre-softened. It easily squishes right out of the can. It was also lumpy (again suggesting old stock) and required some mixing to get a uniform consistency. On the test boat, the finish did not bead water as well as others did.

Bottom line: Testers had  expected to get better results from this moderately expensive product.

Turtle wax Super Hard Shell Wax

Turtle Wax Super Hard Shell Wax is a very soft green goo that can easily ooze out of the can, even with the flimsy top in place. It comes with an applicator sponge, and is gooey to apply but easy to remove. It was the most economically priced but yielded only a fair gloss.

Bottom line: Unless youre waxing nostalgic about waxing the family station wagon, there are better products in this price range.

Turtle Wax F-21

Turtle Wax F-21 Car Polish is a medium soft polish in a can with a screw-on top and sponge applicator. It claims to have a new nano-tech formula that goes on easier, requires no buffing, and lasts longer. The F-21 does not fit in the final wax category because it is designed as a combo cleaner/polish/protectant. However, it was the easiest to apply, and the urethane polymer formula produced a hard shiny finish. Turtle Wax also offers its T-411, a traditional carnauba/polymer blend, that is better suited as a finishing wax and protectant. Also, Turtle Wax is promoting its new “ICE” products, including T-465 “Ice Paste.”

Practical Sailor Resumes its Search for the Best Boat Wax

Bottom line: This product is targeted primarily to auto buffs, but for an owner of a small boat looking for a quick finish with good gloss, this is our Budget Buy.

Conclusions

tested 10 products that are fairly representative of the various types of waxes on the market today. Most did a fairly good job of producing an initial shine. Two with hard wax in the traditional metal cans, Collinite No. 885 and 3M Marine Ultra Performance, had the best glossy shine. However, they were not the easiest to apply and were definitely the most expensive. Another hard wax in a metal can that went on easier, had a good shine, and a moderate price, was Mothers California Gold Carnauba Wax.

Of the slightly softer-textured paste waxes that had the best overall combination of ease of application, mid-range price, and a nice shine, Meguiars Flagship Ultra Performance was our favorite, with Nu-Finish coming in second.

The Budget Buy nod goes to Turtle Wax F-21. For the price, it is easy to apply and buff out, and produces a better-than-average shine.

In some cases, the difference in gloss, water beading, and reflection was hard to determine. The flashlight test and shine on the white hatch cover did not always match gloss obtained on our test boat, thus the different ratings on our chart.

The chart also shows a wide range of prices. The car waxes from auto-parts stores are the most economical. As expected, those that are truly a “third-step” marine hard wax, without cleaners, were the most expensive. They also produced exceptional gloss. Based on past results, we suspect they will also last the longest.

The real test for shine will come in the next few months as we examine our test boat and white fiberglass hatch cover that have been out in the Florida weather. Look for a follow-up article.

We also will be going forward with a look at bottled and spray waxes in future installments.

The Best Boat Waxes for Boat Detailing and Fixing a Surface

Written by J. Harvey / Fact checked by S. Numbers

best boat wax

The difference between waxed and unwaxed boats is pretty obvious. Waxing your boat is more than gaining a high gloss shine but ensuring protection from direct sunlight, oxidation, fish blood, salt water, and other outdoor elements as well.

For this, you will need the best boat wax. You’ll know that it’s the one if it can deliver the following things:

  • Magnificent Result: Understandably, you expect magnificent results from a boat wax because you spend money, time, and effort on its application. Before purchasing, you have to check its ability. Is it a marine wax that can establish a protective layer or eliminate the present damages? You can avail waxes that take care of minor scratches, oxidation, and light marks. Regarding this matter, you can study your boat’s appearance to assess what it needs. It will be easy to decide which boat wax to buy once you know your goals.
  • Long-lasting Finish: Apart from the result, a long-lasting finish is what you need to look for in a good boat wax. You don’t want a wax that peels off after a few days. However, there are external factors that can affect the durability of the finish, such as the usage time of the boat and the climate of your location. If you’re in an area that has extreme weather conditions and a lot of sunshine, you have to get wax for a boat that is formulated for said climate.
  • Convenient Application Method: Different boat waxes mean that application methods are not done in the same way. Straightforward application is typically done on small boats as you’ll only use cloth. Other waxes require an electric polishing machine or mechanical buffer. Your preference is not only based on your boat’s size and needs but also the time and amount of work that you can commit.

You don’t need to look high and low for the most boat waxes as this review contains a list of excellent options. Just read on to choose one that has the qualities that you’re looking for.

Based on the results that this product delivers, I can say that it’s the best wax for gelcoat boats. UV rays and fading are the weaknesses of gel coat surfaces. So, I’m glad that this product provides a protective layer against sunlight and the wear and tear of outdoor use.

This can also be described as a cleaner wax. It removed the black marks on my boat that I thought would be permanent! I was able to clean up some tree sap spots too. Furthermore, it can cover minor scratches and streaks. After it gets rid of any unwanted stains, it reveals a terrific, glossy finish that enriches the color of painted surfaces.

Most boat owners who know about the wonder of Meguiar’s wax prefer this as their final wax. I’m one of them. It can wipe off heavy oxidation that has accumulated for years as well as tough mildew. I discovered it when I fixed my dad’s unused boat.

You may think that it takes a lot of effort to apply this wax since it provides wonderful results. But no! Application is easy peasy. The little amount of compound that I spread on the surface goes a long way.

  • Gives a protective layer against sunlight and wear and tear of outdoor use
  • Can wipe off heavy oxidation and mildew formation that has accumulated for years
  • Easy application and can go a long way
  • Must not apply too much amount of wax or else, you won’t like the result

The durability of this Meguiar’s boat wax is notable because it’s specially formulated with Carnauba wax. My boat is exposed to direct sunlight all summer long and yet, the shiny surface is not easily deteriorated. It also proves to be tough in facing rain and snow. It can last for seasons before being put into storage, which proves its long lasting protection.

I was able to make light oxidation disappear by using it. The result is splendid as it gives off a deep shine on my boat’s surface. It promises that your boat can look brand new again. I like how water just slides off since the coating that it creates is waterproof. You don’t need to hire a professional to achieve the looks that you want for your boat.

Its amazing performance is also possible on cars and shower rooms.

The application can be done either by hand or with the help of a cloth or a mechanical buffer. Let it haze then wipe it off with a clean microfiber cloth. Waxing has never been easier!

  • Can withstand any type of weather with its long lasting protection
  • Gives a shiny surface and waterproof coating
  • The boat needs to be cleaned thoroughly before wax application

This is no doubt the best boat wax for fiberglass boats. You better make a wise decision just like what I did when I followed the recommendation of my fellow boater and bought this. You can get a lot from the high shine of its finish.

It’s a boat wax that makes surfaces slick and slippery. Apart from the fact that my boat looks neat, it’s astonishing to see the water spots glide every time I pull my boat out of the water. I like how water turns into beads over this wax. Yet, it still has a wet-like finish.

You can feel the presence of the wax and the solid shine that it creates. Hence, it’s also great for gel coat surfaces. Some use this to improve the looks of their bathtubs and showers. As you can see, it lasts for a long time despite exposure to water.

To ensure that the hull is free from dirt, I used the cleaner from the same company. I’ve heard that some use dawn dish soap but I’m quite certain about my preference. It only took me 10 minutes to finish the application over my 23-foot boat. I applied this wax twice within the said time frame.

  • Great for both fiberglass and gel coated boats
  • Makes the surface neat, slick, and slippery
  • Used on bathtubs and shower
  • The application can get messy

best sailboat wax

My boat is slick and shiny because of this liquid wax. I’ve tried several boat waxes and this one stands out. I’m impressed by how it brings out the luster of my boat’s gel coat surface. I’ve read some boat wax reviews saying that it’s great for fiberglass and topside paints. The UV protection of this wax is for real as it doesn’t fade easily despite being exposed to sunlight most of the time.

Its ability as a cleaner wax makes me admire it more. I noticed from the very beginning that it can hide stains and minor scratches or scuffs. It’s something that a mixture of water and soap can’t do. Believe it or not, I also used this for my car due to its cleaning properties. By the same token, it’s the ultimate item for restoring boats that of old models.

The previous marine waxes that I use leave a white, chalky residue on decals and corners. But that does not happen with this product. Therefore, it can’t be denied that this marine boat wax promotes cleanliness. Thanks to it, cleaning is no longer a burden. Also, it’s way better than the paste wax that is hard to remove.

  • Makes slick and shiny surface
  • Has UV protection
  • Great for fiberglass, topside paints, and cars
  • Can be a cleaner wax as it can hide stains and minor scuffs
  • Restores the look of boats that are even old models
  • Doesn’t leave a white, chalky residue
  • Wet sanding is needed before application

best sailboat wax

This product promotes high gloss on any boat’s surface while also working as an excellent boat cleaner . Because of these effects, I learned that marine waxing is not only about aesthetics. I can remove mold, mildew, spider poop, and water stains. Even though the dirt has been on the surface for a long time, it will yield to this wax. With a little elbow grease, this spray bottle of boat wax is the best for boat detailing.

It’s amazing how it cleans boats without any amount of bleach. The formula is akin to a traditional paste wax or spray on boat wax. It also has a protective layer, which my boat needs as I take long trips most of the time.

Applying this wax is one of the steps for winter storage. When the sailing season comes, I apply this wax under the sun. I have not encountered any issue so far and I’m fascinated that there are no watermarks. Therefore, I can conclude that it can withstand hot surfaces. Those who live in hot areas can benefit a lot from this wax.

My friend uses hard water on this and no water spots have emerged. A single squirt of this wax is enough for four trips of wiping down my 22-foot boat. The effect is a shiny surface that warms my heart.

  • Works as a boat cleaner that’s best for boat detailing
  • Protects outdoor use and direct sunlight
  • Doesn’t tolerate water marks or spots
  • Can withstand hot surfaces
  • Delivers a shiny surface
  • With a hint of vinegary smell

best sailboat wax

I was looking for the best marine wax for gelcoat for several boat wax reviews when I noticed that this one appears in every review. So, I gave it a try and I’m glad that it’s effective.

My boat that sat in the lake for a long time accumulated high levels of lime. This compelled me to find a premium wax for gel coats. I did all the necessary cleaning steps before applying it.

How I wish that it gives a clear coat, not yellow. But I know the issue is more on my boat’s side as it’s 20 years old. It gives every gel coat surface the needed shine to look brand new. You can always depend on it to make old boats look better. Oxidation can be erased by this wax too.

If a boat or car is in good shape, there’s no need for cutting and buffing. How cool is that! It’s also gentle on your nose as it doesn’t have any strong smell. With Carnauba wax in this product, it can also be used on cars. I know some people who use this to keep their shower floor and bathroom sink in good condition as well.

  • Premium wax for gel coats
  • Used to refurbish old boats
  • Can erase signs of oxidation
  • No need for cutting and buffing when used on boats in good shape
  • No strong smell
  • Doesn’t cause discoloration after a season
  • Some may not like its yellow color

best sailboat wax

The amazing effects of this terrific fiberglass wax for boats leaves me speechless. To start talking about the benefits of this boat wax, it truly makes the boat move faster as the ads say. It’s based on how it cleans up fiberglass and gel coat boats and gives a brilliant shine for a smooth surface.

This cleaner wax turns faded areas into a shiny surface. I was surprised to see how it cleaned the old paint and restored the finish of one of my boats. Moreover, it brings back the luster of the boat’s paint and eliminates hazy parts. The color becomes even compared to its previous state.

All of my boats are well-cared because this product can remove light oxidation. Medium to heavy oxidation may need another waxing after ten days of the first application. I usually buff them, but with the shine given by this wax, I sometimes skip polishing.

My boat occasionally hits the rubber section on the trailer when I take it out of the water. I thought it’s going to be an issue. But to my relief, wiping away the black marks and dirt was accomplished with less effort. Thus, it keeps the boat clean and slick without requiring me to work hard.

  • Makes boat move faster
  • Gives a brilliant shine to fiberglass and gel coat boats
  • Restores shine of faded surfaces and areas affected with oxidation
  • Makes the paint color even and more intense
  • May skip polishing in some cases
  • Keeps boat clean and slick
  • A second application is needed for medium to heavy oxidation

best sailboat wax

Keeping my boat clean as well as protecting it from UV damage obliged me to buy this product. With Carnauba wax in its formula, I was able to make the surface of my boat gleaming and smooth! You can apply it on dry or wet surfaces. Furthermore, you can use it on fiberglass, plastic, and metal surfaces. As for me, it’s best on a fiberglass gel coat boat.

Attaining the glossy finish that brushes off water is a piece of cake. Clean the boat properly before applying this product. Apply boat wax by spraying it like a mist that can spread well with the help of a cloth. Give it some time to dry then wipe it off.

I use an electric buffer to finish the waxing process quickly but surely. Before buffering, I make sure that it’s dry and has turned into a haze. The outcome is splendid but you should be thoughtful on where to apply it because it’s not recommended for areas that are walked on. On the brighter side, it doesn’t tolerate water spots.

  • Provides UV protection
  • Leaves surface gleaming and smooth
  • Can be applied on wet or dry surfaces
  • Adheres on different surfaces
  • A single spray spreads well
  • Doesn’t tolerate water spots
  • Not for areas that are walked on

best sailboat wax

I never thought I could get a lot of compliments because of this affordable product. Who won’t be astounded by its lasting, mirror shine? I think I’m lucky to meet the repairman that introduced me to this spray wax.

This wax does me a lot of favor. In all honesty, I don’t deprive my boat of necessary cleaning and maintenance . The quick application of this wax suits me well since I never fail to keep my boat in good condition. So, I just need to use it in between detailing sessions. It’s for those who don’t have much time to use heavy boat wax products. Many boat owners use this as a quick spot wax.

Don’t complicate its application by spreading it heavily. Just spray and wipe it thinly with a cloth to get the glossy shine that you wish for. It’s super easy to use!

  • Gives mirror shine on surfaces
  • Suitable for detailing sessions
  • An effective quick spot wax
  • Super easy to use
  • Can be used to refurbish old boats and fix gel coats
  • Removes bug splatters and small, unwanted spots
  • No good result if applied heavily

best sailboat wax

This is all I need as it’s not only for removing light oxidation but heavy ones as well. Nothing is like it among the products that I used before. It’s worth every penny as I was able to restore a 33-year old boat. I’m impressed that I don’t need to use so much elbow grease just to get rid of the heavy oxidation.

However, wet sanding is essential to revive old boats into their former glory. You may have 1000 to 1500 sandpaper grit for scrubbing. However, application is not complicated as you have choices to use a cloth or buffer. It can restore the shiny appeal of the gel coat in no time.

The white ash-look of old boats will likely disappear. No wonder it’s effective on colored boats. Nonetheless, you can also make white surfaces shine. You may not need rubbing and finishing compound if you apply two coatings.

I’ve witnessed how it can make minor scratches and mildew vanish. Aside from being a boat wax for scratches, it plays other roles like covering up flaws and protecting your boat from dirt and stain. UV damage doesn’t threaten me when I go sailing in summer as my boat is protected by this wax.

  • Can remove light to heavy oxidation
  • Application is not complicated
  • Works on colored boats as well as white surfaces
  • Can get rid of minor scratches
  • Repels dirt, stain, and UV damage
  • Cost-efficient
  • May need two coatings in some cases

best sailboat wax

It’s the best wax that I’ve ever had because it gives me a gel coat shine as well as a deep wax finish. I like the waxed appearance of my boat every time I pull it out of the water. You may use it on topside paints, fiberglass, painted, aluminum, vinyl, and even cars. The application can be done on a dry or wet surface.

What pleases me about this product is the straightforward application. Spray the compound then wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. It’s as easy as one-two-three. I must say that it’s like polishing without putting in a lot of effort. It’s my secret on how I keep the brand new look of my 6-year old boat that is 21 feet long. I usually can’t finish the whole bottle as I only use ¾ of it.

I also don’t need a boat buffer for every application. Just imagine the time and effort that you save! The shinier surface that it makes is noticeable even without buffing. Moreover, this wax is a dedicated cleaner. That’s why I wish that it’s available in a bigger size. I’m impressed by how it gets rid of compound dust, bird poop, marks, and spots.

  • Delivers gel coat shine and deep wax finish
  • Can be used on different materials and surfaces
  • Straightforward application and buffer is not needed
  • Saves time and effort when cleaning and waxing a boat
  • A dedicated cleaner and gets rid of unwanted things
  • Makes cleaning easier
  • Could have been much better if it’s in a bigger size

best sailboat wax

This is an all-in-one boat compound and wax because it can clean, protect, and make boats shiny as you want them to be. I have read discussions in the hull truth and many boat owners have positive feedback about it. After seeing what it can do, I agree with them. It does a lot of things compared to other brands that are in the same price range.

Based on my experience in using this wax, it can face various challenges. For example, it can cover up fading parts, chalky haze, or light oxidation. Even the dents and scrapes are concealed. Therefore, a boat that has been through a long period of hard use can regain a cleaner and shinier appearance.

My boat’s top, main cabin, hardtop, and restroom were improved because of this wax. Before the application, I scrubbed and washed them. I used a mechanical buffer but you can also do it manually with the help of clean microfiber cloth or polishing pads. Let it dry and turn into a haze before wiping. I noticed that it can’t cut through heavy oxidation right away. A second application is needed.

  • All-in-one; can protect, clean, and make boat shinier than ever
  • Can cover up light oxidation, scrapes, and dents
  • Used on different parts of the boat
  • Protects against UV rays
  • Blocks oil-based stain and water
  • A second application for heavy oxidation

best-wax-for-boats

You’ll have to get the right boat wax no matter what as you’ll apply it on an expensive surface. Here are the things that you have to keep in mind before buying:

Type of Boat

Some boat waxes match several surfaces while some are intended for a specific purpose. Gel coats and fiberglass are common components of boats, and they look good when they’re shiny. But there are also painted hulls that need a different wax.

There’s also a boat wax for saltwater and it’s usually used for metal surfaces. Thus, you have to know your boat to get the right wax for it.

The Condition of the Surface

Boaters use wax for boat detailing or fixing a surface. Therefore, it’s also important to study the condition of your boat. For instance, you have to get boat wax that can eliminate signs of oxidation when a vessel has not been waxed for a long period. Surfaces should also be cleaned thoroughly before application.

Quality and Durability

As a responsible boat owner, you must buy quality products for your boat. So, broaden your perspective. When it comes to boat wax, you shouldn’t only look after its shiny finish but also its durable protection. Some give a nice finish but wear off in a short time.

best-wax-for-gelcoat-boats

Washing is done for maintenance and it’s also a must before waxing your boat. If the need calls for it, you have to do some polishing to eliminate scratches or other kinds of imperfection. You’ll need a boat buffer for this procedure too.

The type of boat wax that you will use depends on the boat that you have. Liquid wax is most suitable for fiberglass boats while paste wax is a match for aluminum or metal surfaces. You’ll need a clean microfiber towel or a buffer for application.

Polishing is done before waxing as it’s a preparation before waxing the boat. You have to polish an old boat and clear any flaws or oxidation marks.

It seems that car wax can make the same finish as boat wax. If you look closely to check boat wax vs car wax, you’ll find several differences. First, car wax can create a clear coat, which a boat wax can’t. But the latter excels in its ability to diminish oxidation.

The best boat wax has a lot to offer. It’s not only capable of giving your boat the glossy shine but also protection from the sun’s UV rays and wear and tear. Study the condition of your boat before selecting a product. Once you know what your boat needs, you’ll be able to pick the right boat wax.

The Best Boat Waxes to Protects Your Boat from Abrasion, Fading

Written by Anthony Roberts / Fact checked by Jonathan Larson

best boat wax

You just don’t get any boat wax for boats since you’ll apply it on an expensive gel coat surface. It’s one of the essential items for your boat’s maintenance. Application can be time-consuming, and it will be easier if you have the best boat wax. You can identify it by the following factors:

  • The final look

The final look or finish of a marine wax for boats has a big part in your decision. For example, the wet-look finish enhances gel coat surfaces because it delivers deep shine and stunning gloss. The boat color is enhanced and cleaning becomes effortless too.

  • Strengthening durability

Who doesn’t want to make the painted surface area of your boat durable? To ensure the durability of boat wax, there are some things that you have to consider. You have to bear in mind the climate where you live as well as the required maintenance. Don’t forget about the contaminants that can damage gel coats.

Damp weather, direct sunlight, and saltwater can also affect the durability of gel coat surfaces. If your boat is always exposed to these elements, application of boat hull wax should be done often. It’s a crucial step if you allow your boat to be anchored outside all year round.

Cleaning and waxing your boat regularly can establish a durable film that poses as protection. Since the nice appearance of your boat’s surface, you can preserve the overall shine, color, and look.

  • Ease and needed time for application

Before buying a product, you have to know the necessary time for applying boat wax and polish. You have to know if it needs more time to rub on the surface even with a boat buffer. Choose a boat wax that doesn’t require a lot of effort. So, you won’t feel exhausted every time you need to apply it on your boat.

These factors can be found in the boat waxes included in the list here. Read on to choose the right boat wax for you.

This is the top-rated marine wax for many reasons. I used it on the 2004 Seahunt that I inherited from my father. The mildew and oxidation that have accumulated for years were removed with so much ease. I’m so happy that the old boat is now in an exceptional working state.

Moreover, it doesn’t only remove oxidation but keeps it from coming back. I witnessed how it can provide long-lasting protection to gel coat and fiberglass surfaces. It leaves a shiny effect so it can prevent boats from looking dull! After working on this wax, I notice that the boat’s color becomes vibrant. But I was more surprised that this functions as a mild fiberglass boat cleaner after it removed some tree saps.

Besides being a fiberglass boat wax, it’s effective on the shower and some vehicles. I love how it keeps our shower sparkling for several months. My friend who permanently lives in a mobile home uses this on the shelves and seats. She even told me that it’s great for metal surfaces because it made the aluminum trim on her sliding door look better.

  • Removes oxidation and mildew that were accumulated for years
  • Provides long-lasting protection on gel coat and fiberglass surfaces
  • Eliminates dullness with its shiny effect
  • Works as a mild cleaner
  • Effective on other surfaces like metal
  • Easy application and removal
  • Temperature-sensitive so it dries quickly under the sun

I started admiring marine boat wax in liquid form because of this product. It’s not only for the boat hull but for the motor as well. The most outstanding effect of this liquid wax is the high gloss shine. It will surely give your boat an awesome look. Although this is synthetic wax, it can make your boat shine for a year. It’s a huge advantage for me because I live in an area where my boat is exposed to the sun’s UV rays most of the time.

Apart from gel coat and fiberglass, this wax does well in covering the metal and topside paint surfaces. I feel relieved that it doesn’t leave sticky residue even on black areas. Although I don’t use a 3M boat cleaner on the hull, I’m delighted to see that it works as a cleaner wax. It removed the stubborn grime and tar on my SUV. Yes, I also use it on my SUV where there are painted surfaces and wooden furniture.

The finish is not only smooth but hard and durable. Therefore, it guarantees UV protection and shields from abrasion. The nasty brown water can’t stain my boat. Also, it helps you to counter weathering and fading. Interestingly, it can cover minor stains.

  • Delivers high gloss shine
  • Can be applied on various surfaces
  • Works as a cleaner wax
  • Creates a smooth but hard and durable finish
  • Protects from the sun’s UV rays, abrasion, fading, and weathering
  • Requires little effort on hand buffing when applying
  • Can spill inside the parcel

I tried many marine waxes but this one is my favorite fiberglass wax for boats! This also works on painted surfaces and vinyl decals. It’s not exclusive for vessels as I can make my shower glass door shine with it. The roof of my car also benefits from its high gloss finish. You’ll be surprised that some people apply this on their RVs, campers, ATVs, and motorcycles.

I never thought that getting rid of scum and spots only takes minimal effort. But I did it with this fast wax without the help of a buffer or electric polishing machine. When I took my jet ski to a lake and river, the water was hard in those areas. Good thing that I have this; water spots were gone in a matter of a few minutes.

I’m not bluffing but you can leave the dock with fiberglass boats looking brand new. This is a spray wax that you can directly apply and wipe with a cloth. Let its magic work for five minutes and you can see the glossy result. No watermarks would bother you. I add a bit of elbow grease and quick detailer but they’re not required all the time. That’s why it’s much better than Chemical Guys boat wax.

  • Can be applied on different surfaces
  • Gets rid of scum and water spots with minimal effort
  • No need for a buffer
  • Brings glossy result
  • Can be applied under the sun
  • Some may not like its smell

Even without adding elbow grease and traditional paste wax, this has impressed many boat owners and I’m one of them. It creates a protective layer that turns water into beads. I also appreciate the high shine from this longest-lasting boat wax. I’ve been using it for years and I don’t need to look for the top-tier boat waxes.

After I manually apply this wax, I just use dawn dish soap. I know someone who washes his boat with a hose. It’s a simple way of washing it down but the effect is still the same. No one can tell that the ease of cleaning is caused by wax. When I apply it on areas with tough stains, I need a brush to completely remove them. But not much work is required and even buffing is not necessary at all.

I’m blown away by the slick and slippery surface of my boat and jet ski. I sometimes meet some people who think that I bought a new boat. One of them was able to sell an old boat because of this boat wax. He talked about how messy his deck was during the application but it’s all worth it.

  • Delivers long-lasting, high shine
  • Applied and washed down easily
  • Creates slick and slippery surface for a new look
  • Gives protection against UV damage, salt spray, strains, chalking, corrosion, and marine growth
  • Provides dependable and durable protection
  • Can be used on other things aside from vessels
  • Need to use a brush on areas with tough stain

With the wide range of boat wax products in the market, I couldn’t decide. So, I asked my friend who is a professional detailer. He said that it’s incredible stuff but offered at the right price. His words are for real because the combination of Brazilian Carnauba wax, resin, and polymer technology delivers the ideal result.

I can’t help but be awed by the deep gloss and reflection of its finish. The result is ideal for surfaces with dark colors and metal covered with a clear coat. It’s an effective wax for gel-coat boats, painted surfaces, topside paints, and RV.

In addition, its hydrophobic quality is wonderful as it ensures protection against UV rays. Just by the looks and feels of this boat wax for UV protection, you can tell that it can give a splendid outcome.

Although it’s so hot during summer in our area, the extraordinary shine of the finish lasts the whole season. It can withstand rain and snow later on. One of its amazing effects is making old things look new. It’s like a miracle when it revived my friend’s 6-year old RV and 10-year old motorhome.

  • Has a finish of deep gloss and reflection
  • Ideal for different kinds of surfaces
  • Has UV protection
  • Can last the whole season and withstand rain and snow
  • Makes old things look new
  • Quicker application when done manually
  • The bottle can explode inside the package

Most boat owners are worried about the threat of outdoor elements. I’m thankful for this cleaner wax because it protects my boat from different kinds of weather. I’m worry-free when it comes to oxidation, which is caused by the hot sun and cold windy days.

Apart from long-lasting protection, it can remove severe oxidation by rubbing the area. A second application is recommended though and it must be done ten days after the first application. Don’t misjudge its ability to remove severe oxidation as you need to wait for a couple of hours to see the result. I like how it’s responsible for dealing with the boat’s non-skid surfaces.

You’ll need a couple of towels or cotton for application and wiping when it turns haze. Make sure that you spread the solution uniformly. You may also use a buffer with this marine wax. Although putting this cleaner wax may seem meticulous, it’s worthwhile. My effort is rewarded by a brilliant, deep shine that made my boat look new again. This effect also enhances the boat’s color.

The surface is clean and slick so it contributes to speeding up the vessel. It renews old boats even the gravely faded gel-coated fiberglass since it’s specially formulated for the said material as well as painted surfaces and metals.

  • Protects the boat from different kinds of weather
  • Can remove light oxidation as well as severe cases
  • Gives the surface a brilliant, deep shine
  • Enhances the boat’s color
  • Makes the surface clean and slick to speed up the vessel
  • Renews old boats
  • Meticulous application especially with severe cases of oxidation

My friends call me a wax fanatic as I’ve tried a lot of stuff like boat ceramic wax and boat spray wax to name a few. This liquid wax is the only one that satisfied my standard. I love how it creates a slick and smooth finish on my boat just like 3M Marine Ultra Performance paste wax. The credit goes to the Carnauba wax included in their formula.

Some also use it for the upkeep of their motorhomes. The formula of this marine wax is good for gel coats, fiberglass, metals, and paints. Furthermore, my boat regains its shine and looks brand new since I started using it.

After I witnessed its efficacy, I took the responsibility of restoring my father’s old boat that had not been waxed for 25 years. With its help, a heavy amount of oxidation disappeared. Sanding was done before application but I must say that this wax removed the oxidation.

I’m delighted to discover that it can also revive faded paint. My trailer had brown-colored paint but it became white due to harsh UV rays. My trailer got its shine back thanks to this Carnauba wax! A bottle can go a long way and resolve issues of oxidation and fading.

  • Creates a slick and smooth finish
  • Good for different kinds of surfaces
  • Can be used to restore old boats
  • Removes oxidation efficiently
  • Revives faded paint
  • The yellowish finish may not please users who are after clear coating

The ads about this item are true. There’s so much ease in wiping this Quik wax on my boat but it results in lasting shine. That’s why many boaters complimented my boat’s appearance and some of them also started using this marine wax. An old folk told me that it’s the most top-rated boat wax that he has ever encountered in his three decades of boating.

It’s not only for the fiberglass and gel coat of a water vessel but it’s great for clear plastic, stainless steel, and non-porous surfaces. You can never go wrong in applying it in boat detailing. It can take care of the travel trailer too. I also tried incorporating it with auto detailing and it went well. Believe it or not, some people also use it for canoes and paddle boards.

I’m not into heavy spray wax for boats so this is the perfect option for me. I just spray a bit of its formula and wipe. Only minimal effort is needed even if you use a buffer. After an easy job, a high gloss surface is unveiled. The slick and glossy finish stays for a long period.

  • Can adhere with various surfaces
  • Useful in boat and auto detailing
  • Effective in other things such as travel trailers, canoes, and paddleboards
  • Easy application with minimal effort
  • Forms a slick and glossy finish that stays for a long period
  • Can be applied on wet and dry surfaces
  • Spraying too much will make it hard to wipe
  • Not good to work under the heat

This premium wax lives by its name as a restorer because my 33-year-old fiberglass boat was revamped. After mending my boat, a couple of restoration projects followed. I was able to restore my neglected camper without needing a ton of elbow grease. Even the 1936 Chevy master deluxe was free from blemishes. By accomplishing all these projects, I no longer wonder why there’s a content of boat wax the hull truth forum.

Due to its ability to eliminate oxidation, this is twice as effective as other boat waxes. Light wet sanding is a crucial step to achieving your goal. Then, I wash the surface, let it dry, and apply this restorer. I finish it off with a polisher and wool bonnet. But you can also do it manually. Either way, you can obtain the same result 0f enhancing colored fiberglass.

  • No need for elbow grease when used in restoration projects
  • Can remove blemishes and mildew
  • Works well on colored fiberglass
  • Covers tiny scratches, faded and chalky surfaces
  • Reveals brilliant and mirror-like finish
  • Establishes protective layer from sun’s UV rays
  • Two applications can bring the mirror-shine finish

I always believe that 303 products are much better than their counterparts. A good example is this quick spray and protectant. Although it’s not all-encompassing, it can be applied to various surfaces, except areas that are being stepped on.

I must say that it’s ideal for fiberglass, which is a common boat material. Still, I’m happy with the outcome after I spray it on my jet ski and SUV. Because I am fascinated with this product, I can’t stop myself from talking about it. So, I met a lot of people who use it in different ways.

Some of them use it for auto and a woman used it for bathroom renovation. It can shine up the shower and vanity top. This is the same effect that appears when you spray it on your boat.

Based on my experience using this quick wax, it helps me to remove mud after docking my boat. Without a doubt, it’s reliable for quick cleaning. Therefore, compound buffing and waxing are not required. There’s no problem with it since it can strip off and repel dirt at the same time. But your boat is only protected after a few trips. This happens when you spray the light mist and wipe it.

  • Can be on different surfaces and things
  • Leaves surface shiny
  • Reliable for quick cleaning without needing to buff
  • Can strip off and repel dirt
  • Not exactly a quick wax as buffing is necessary to last longer

It’s not easy to keep your boat in good condition. The main step is cleaning, which becomes a breeze because of this wax. Due to its finish, the dirt just slides off when I wash my boat after sailing. The black streaks left by snaps were removed easily. Thus, I can say that it’s a shortcut to cleaning a boat. I sometimes forget that it’s a boat wax and think of it as a cleaner instead.

I can gain a shiny finish without the need to polish. When the need arises, I just spray this formula. I admire its ability in removing water spots with ease. It can also efficiently get rid of bird poop, dirt, and light residue. Then, it brings back the luster of gel coat, fiberglass, painted aluminum, and topside paints.

  • A shortcut of regular cleaning as dirt slides off the boat
  • Leaves a shiny finish
  • On-the-go spray wax as it’s ready-to-use when the need arises
  • Can remove water spots and light residue
  • Effective on various surfaces whether dry or wet
  • Can make a boat and other things look new
  • Could have been better if it’s available in a bigger bottle

The Different Types of Boat Wax

  • Carnauba boat wax

It’s a soft wax that doesn’t have any grit. The deep shine and high gloss that it provides are dependable. It delivers protection against saltwater and sunlight. This wax is great on fiberglass, gel coats, and painted surfaces.

  • Restorer wax

It’s in the form of a thick mixture with loads of rubbing compounds. You can apply it on surfaces that are mutual with Carnauba wax. It can wipe out oxidation and pollutants to revive the lost shine of a dull surface.

A polisher wax is almost similar to Carnauba wax but their contents are quite different. It’s made of a synthetic solution that forms a protective layer on a clean surface. Oxidation is gone as it regains the luster of your boat hull.

  • Cleaner wax

For the need to clean and seal the finish, this type of wax is made. It’s amazing how it can immediately remove chalking, oxidation, and chalking. In addition, it protects gel coat, fiberglass, and painted surfaces from early fading. Some cleaner waxes can be applied to metals too. Thus, it’s understandable that this is the favorite of many boat owners.

Benefits of Using Boat Wax

  • Protection against UV damage

Vessels are exposed to the sunlight most of the time. Hence, custom graphics, paint, and other exterior parts are vulnerable to damage. You can counter this inevitable circumstance by boat wax which works on recovering the shine, color, and overall appearance of your boat. A quality wax can preserve the original color and state of a vessel.

You can rest assured that your boat won’t be easily damaged if you clean and wax it before the sailing season. This is a piece of advice from professionals.

  • Less drag in the water

Waxing your boat makes a difference in its movement as it noticeably gets faster. Even though it gets older, it can still smoothly glide on the water. To take advantage of this effect, some boaters wax their boats every month. However, excellent performance of maneuvering a vessel plays a big role in controlling a boat, and it won’t require frequent waxing.

  • A marine shield

A layer of wax creates a maximum marine shield that makes your boat resistant to long-term damage. Furthermore, it prevents the accumulation of pollutants and residues like dirt and fish blood.

best-marine-wax

There are different forms of fiberglass wax, such as liquid, paste, and spray-on. But make sure that either of them can make a shiny surface and protection against UV and saltwater.

The number of coats depends on your boat’s condition and needs. But it’s given that multiple coats have a more wonderful effect than one layer. The quality of the wax also matters as there are products that can deliver in just a single coat. Some need to be applied twice or more.

Waxing your boat should be done every three or four months to achieve an optimum result.

  • Before starting the process, secure your boat on a trailer that is on a flat or even surface.
  • Wash the boat’s exterior part to remove grime and build-up. Sanding may be necessary in some cases.
  • You’ll need to remove old wax with the help of toulene or a dewaxing agent.
  • Wash the boat again with the appropriate detergent or cleaner.
  • You can apply wax and it should be done in the same direction.
  • Give the wax some time to dry and buff it to get a shiny surface.

No, it isn’t. A car wax can’t provide the same level of protection as a boat wax. If you apply it on your boat, it needs frequent application since the protective layer is not sufficient. Thus, it’s fine to use boat wax in a car as it creates a more protective layer from outdoor elements.

A boat wax is typically made of pure palm or Carnauba wax with no grit or additional compound. On the other hand, a boat polish is a synthetic mixture that functions similarly to boat wax, but it’s not filled with Carnauba wax.

It’s crucial to include the best boat wax in your boat maintenance supply. Your boat is exposed to sunlight, saltwater, and different kinds of weather when you go sailing. A protective layer from the right boat wax can prevent fading and damage. Once you defeat the possible long-term damage, it’s easy to maintain the brand new look of your boat.

How to Wax a Boat: Our Simple Step by Step Guide

Have you decided it’s finally time to wax your boat, but are unsure where to begin? Don’t worry; that’s where we come in!

As experts in the boating industry, our team explains exactly how to wax a boat in today’s blog post. Keep reading for your step-by-step guide and the answers to frequently asked questions.

Why is Waxing a Boat Important?

Before we dive into the ins and outs of how to wax a boat, why does it matter? Well, waxing your boat is essential to maintaining the color, shine, and integrity of your boat’s finish. Additionally, it makes regular cleaning ultra-easy, as it’s harder for grime and grit to stick to waxed surfaces.

Waxing a Boat: Step-by-Step Guide

Ready to embark on your boat waxing adventure? All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

1. Clean Your Boat

Before waxing a boat, you must get rid of surface debris, dirt, and other organic material. Even if you haven’t taken your boat on the water, it’s common for dirt, dust, and debris to build up over time.

To clean your boat:

  • Remove it from the water and park it on a flat surface.
  • Secure the boat to its trailer so it doesn’t move.
  • Spray the boat down to loosen any dirt and debris.
  • Use a high-quality, non-abrasive cleaner for the fiberglass.
  • Scrub thoroughly with a boat brush for optimal results.
  • Rinse your boat off and let it dry.

2. Choose the Best Boat Wax for Your Boat

The next step in waxing a boat is choosing the best boat wax for you. Plenty of different boat waxes are on the market, although we recommend opting for one that is durable and easy to apply.

Here’s a brief overview of some potential boat waxes :

  • Carnauba wax : This type of wax is known for its glossy appearance. It protects against salt, water, and UV light. However, it doesn’t scrub away dirt/debris because it doesn’t have grit. Therefore, it’s ideal for new or well-maintained boats.
  • Cleaner wax : This wax offers a gentle scrub that rids boats of stains, dirt, and surface damage. However, it can’t tackle severe damage like scrapes and scratches.
  • Boat polishing wax : This wax is similar to carnauba because it doesn’t contain grit. It’s made of synthetic polymer components scientifically engineered to block damage from saltwater, UV rays, and more – without losing its integrity.
  • Restorer wax : Old or severely damaged boats might require a more robust waxing option. When that’s the case, we recommend restorer wax. Because it contains many thick, coarse compounds, it can remove deep markings and similar damage.

3. Wax The Boat

After you’ve chosen the best boat wax for you, it’s time to wax your boat. Start by applying a quarter-sized amount of wax to a microfiber cloth. Then, rub it into the hull in circular motions. We recommend working in small sections (3ft by 3ft), as the wax will start to dry to a hazy finish.

Note : If you want to make this process easier, use an electric waxing tool.

4. Buff It Out

Once each section has dried, buff it with a soft towel or another microfiber cloth. Essentially, you want to rub the towel in circular motions to remove the wax and buff the boat. Your boat waxing job is complete when your boat retains a shiny, mirror-like finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about how to wax a boat:

How Often Should a Boat Be Waxed?

The general rule of thumb is to wax your boat at least twice yearly. However, most experts agree that your boat should be waxed every three or four months.

Can You Put Too Much Wax on a Boat?

When it comes to waxing your boat, more isn’t better. Putting too much wax on your boat wears down the wax and dulls the finish. That’s why we recommend using a quarter-sized dollop of wax per 3 ft-by-3 ft section. For reference, we use about three-quarters of a 16-ounce bottle of cleaner wax for a 25-foot boat.

Should You Wax the Bottom of the Boat?

When waxing a boat, focusing on the sides and the deck is essential. This protects them from hazing, color fading, and chalking from the sun.

Some people believe that waxing the bottom of the boat makes it go faster. However, that’s not necessarily the case. Waxing the bottom of a vessel increases surface tension, which increases drag.

How To Choose A Boat Wax – Buying Guide

How_To_Choose_Boat_Wax

Because you will be using marine polish wax on a very expensive surface, you need a quality one that you can count on and made to last. The best boat wax has important criteria taken into consideration during formulation and you should look for the same.

  Type Of Boat

Before buying the best boat wax, it’s important to know what you are dealing with and what type of surface you are intending to wax. A lot of these products will work brilliantly on several different surfaces whereas others are more specialized.

The most common type of surface that you will see is the gel coat and fiberglass types. These will have a high shine and there are plenty of different types of products that are out there on the market to do a great job in that respect. If you are not gel coated, the other possibility is that your boat is painted. Painted hulls need different waxes than gel coats, and using the wrong one can make the surface look worse.

Other surfaces might need a wax treatment too as some metals will need protection from saltwater and also pain surfaces can be waxed too. It’s important to know exactly what you are dealing with so that you can get a product to match.

Surface You Need To Wax

Before you think about waxing your boat, it’s important to inspect it to see how much work it’s going to need. If there are quite a lot of imperfections on the surface then these will need to be sorted and it’s important to get a product to match.

One of the key aspects that need to be sorted is the problem of oxidation that can affect many boasts. Some of these products are specifically designed to be able to deal with a high level of oxidation and this should be considered before you buy boat waxes.

It’s also important to make sure that the surface is clean before you apply the wax. If there is any dirt or grease then this could affect the finish that you are looking for. A good clean will ensure that you have the ideal surface on which to apply your wax.

Quality And Durability

Whether it is your anchor, your marine GPS, or your wax, you always want to ensure that you are buying quality. This will ensure that you are getting the best finish possible and one that is going to last for many years. One good idea for ensuring the quality of a product is looking at the reviews that people say.

Some premium marine waxes look great when they are applied but quickly wear off which isn’t ideal. Wax should last for a long time and buying a highly rated product from a reputable company is going to be a good way to ensure that.

These products are going to be dealing with difficult conditions and therefore their durability is of paramount importance. All of the products that we have looked at here are rated very highly in terms of their durability and are going to be perfect, depending on your specific type of boat.

Why_Do_I_Need_To_Wax_My_Boat

Q: Why Do I Need To Wax My Boat?

One of the obvious aspects of applying wax to your boat is simply for the reason of aesthetics. Waxed boats look a lot better and are much more pleasing to the eye. Most people want their boat to look good and giving your boat good waxing is an important part of that.

Wax also plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of your boat too. It will help to prevent oxidation and will also protect any metal surfaces from succumbing to corrosion so that you have a high-quality hull for many years.

The marine polish wax will also help to guard against UV damage too. An additional benefit is that it will smooth the surface of your boat and therefore allow it to steer more freely through the water. There are many important reasons to wax your boat.

Q: Why Can’t I Use My Car Wax On My Boat?

Despite many boats seemingly having a similar finish to cars, there is a lot of difference between the two surfaces. You will technically be able to wax your boat with car wax but you will be missing out on some key qualities of a boat-specific wax.

One of the aspects that separate car finishes from that of boats is that cars are usually finished with a clear coat which will help to seal in the paint and also protect the car from the fading effects that can happen with UV radiation. Boats do not have this clear coat and the paint or gel coat is exposed to the environment.

Also, some boat waxes are specialized in removing oxidation which you rarely see with cars and a lot more often with boats. The conditions that boats have to go through are a lot harsher than with cars and the relative waxes reflect that.

Q: How Should I Prepare The Boat Before Waxing?

Before waxing your boat there are a few important steps that you need to take to ensure that it is going to give the best finish possible. Firstly, if you can, it will be far better to make sure the boat is out of the water.

Before starting the waxing, you want to make sure that any debris is washed off the boat as there should be nothing on the surface that would affect the waxing process. Unless the cleaning process is completed thoroughly, you’ll find that you have to reapply it.

Q: Do I Need Any Additional Tools For Marine Waxing?

As mentioned, the cleaning process is going to be important, and getting a powerful jet washer is going to make that process as easy as possible. This is only a good idea if your boat is in good condition. If the gel coat or paint is starting to flake, the jet washer will strip all the loose parts off and make the peeling surface look even worse. If that’s not possible, you need to wipe the surface with something that is not going to affect it.

One brilliant tool for marine waxing is using a buffer. This is a tool that will be able to wax your boat very quickly with a lot less effort than doing it manually. If you have a boat of any decent size, then buying a buffer is going to be a great idea.

Globo Surf Overview

The best marine waxes are going to make your boat look as good as it ever has but more than that, they will also play a key role in protecting it and ensuring that it can sail freely through the water. All these products we have looked at here can tick all of those key boxes.

To choose the best wax for boats, it’s important to know what type of surface your boat has for you to match it up and get the best fit. Once you do then you are going to be able to restore it to its perfect shine.

You also have to consider if you need to deal with any problems such as flaking paint and oxidation. The durability of the wax is going to be a crucial issue, as you want to make sure you are buying a quality product that will last you for a long time. Once you know exactly what you need, you’re going to be able to pick the perfect product for you and restore your boat just like new.

Think you can just use regular automotive polish instead of investing in specially formulate boat polish? Think again! The best way to take care of your boat is to treat it to a regular clean and polish regime, using dedicated products that won’t harm your boat’s precious gel coat or put your hull at risk.

The wrong polish could be harmful to your boat, and the last thing you want to do is damage your boat’s hull. Because of that reason, it might be tempting to ignore your maintenance regime altogether. You can’t put your boat’s bodywork at risk if you don’t touch it, right? Wrong! It needs to be cleaned and polished regularly, to remove stains, marks, and traces of harmful chemicals.

Plus, it’s always nice to have your possessions looking as good as they can look. You wouldn’t neglect the appearance of your house or car, so you shouldn’t neglect your boat!

Since it’s easy to buy the wrong products, we’ve put together a list of the best boat polish products on the market, with a handy buying guide to make your shopping trip easier! So without further ado, here’s all you need to know.

The Meguiar’s brand name is one of the biggest names in the marine detailing industry, and it’s a name that many boat owners have come to rely on over the years. This polishing product comes highly rated from veteran boaters, with tons of the best boat polish reviews attributed to it.

This product is both a cleaner and a polish that can thoroughly clean gel coat, fiberglass, and other materials, whilst simultaneously leaving behind a durable high gloss finish. If you need one product that can competently tackle a number of jobs, then this is a boat polish that you should consider.

Designed specifically for fiberglass gel coat marine surfaces, this polish can successfully remove stains, water spots, heavy oxidation, salt water damage, and scratches. It will restore your surfaces to their former glory, and protecting them from the effects of the elements too.

Like most of Meguiar’s other products, the M6732 Marine One Step Compound is safe to use and non-toxic. This formula is completely bio-degradable and won’t harm your boat, marine life, or the environment in general. The detergents are biodegradable per regulation (EC) No 648/2004. It might have an aggressive attitude, but it’s eco-friendly.

For the best results, we recommend using this with a buffer machine. This makes short work of light oxidation! However, it works just as well by hand with a microfiber cloth, but it will take more time to apply.

Buying The Best Boat Wax: A Guide

Buying a polish isn’t a complicated task but there are a few features that you should keep your eye out for and a few important things that you should keep in your mind when you’re shopping around. After all, you want to buy the right product for your boat. Here are a few things to think about:

Type Of Boat

One of the most important things to take into account when shopping around for polish is to find a product that works for your boat. By that, we mean a product that’s designed and formulated to clean and treat the materials that your boat is constructed of. If you have an aluminum boat, then you’ll need a polish designed for aluminum. A fiberglass boat will require different treatment. While there are some universal waxes out there, don’t assume the one that you want will just do the job . The wrong formula could leave lasting damage.

For the best results, it’s a wise idea to invest in a selection of different products. A good metal polish, a fiberglass polish, even a car wax, can all contribute to making your boat the best that it can be. Whatever you decide to do: always read the labels. Using incompatible products could do more harm than good.

Type Of Protection

Naturally, you’ll want the best polish that you can find but it’s also worth keeping your specific needs in mind. For example, a polish that specifically tackles damage caused by UV rays could be a better purchase for those who leave their boat exposed for most of the year. A boat that’s always kept in the water may benefit from a polish that’s designed to remove heavy oxidation and corrosion damage.

Most boat polishes offer a general “all round” level of polishing and protection but finding a product that’s formulated to tackle very specific problems that you’re regularly faced with could be a wise investment too.

How Aggressive Does Your Polish Need To Be?

If you keep your boat in great condition, store it well, and follow a regular maintenance schedule , then you can probably purchase less intensive products. Oxidation is one of the biggest problems that boater’s face, however, it doesn’t always require a super strong rubbing compound to get rid of it. If you’re regular about your maintenance, a little bit of elbow grease and patience will get rid of it.

However, if you’re a little neglectful when it comes to your maintenance, and allow for heavy oxidation, water spots, water stains, and grease and grime build up, you may need to invest in a heavier-duty abrasive polish to cut through the dirt, restore shine, and bring your colors back to life.

We always recommend starting with gentler products and working up to the harder stuff. You’ll be surprised just how effective some of the weaker compounds truly are.

Polish Vs Wax

Despite what you many sources suggest, wax and polish are not the same thing. A boat wax is going to be primarily made of…wax! And wax is great for protecting your shine and giving your boat a thin film of protection against the elements. Some polishes have wax-like qualities, but a real polish has very different properties. It’s formulated to cut through grease, and clean up your rougher areas.

In short, polish is for polishing, and wax is for waxing. Polish is for older boats that need a bit of effort to shine, whereas wax is for newer boats that only have light imperfections.

Automotive Vs Marine Products

Can you use automotive products like car wax on your boat? Well, you can, but it depends on the situation. We’ve covered this in a little more detail here . The main thing you need to know is that car polishes are designed to work on painted surfaces, whereas marine products are generally designed specifically with gel coats in mind. Marine polishes are engineered with abrasives that can cut into a gelcoat and restore it. If used on a car, they could damage your car paint.

Ease of Application

Lastly, there’s the ease of application. This could be one of the most important factors that determines what kind of boat polish you buy.

Whatever other criteria you choose, you have to select a polish that you can use and apply without tiring yourself out. Some pastes are a pain to use, but their effects can last a long time. A spray wax or spray bottle polish will be easy to apply, but it probably won’t be so hard wearing.

Some boaters prefer to apply with a rotary buffer , while others prefer to use good old-fashioned elbow grease. Whichever method you prefer, make sure that the product you’ve got your eyes on is compatible.

Find a product that you can apply without wearing yourself out, with the tools that you prefer using, for the right kind of boat, and for the right price. If you can tick all of those boxes, you know you’ve found the perfect polish for your needs.

As ususal, Meguiar’s delivers great quality. We polished a boat we purchased that had some neglect on the gel coat. These are the best products I have used, both to restore old faded gel coat, and to bring luster to newly sprayed and sanded gel coat. You will not be sorry if you use this product. 🙂

Things to Consider When Buying a Boat Wax

Boat wax or boat polish.

The main difference lies in the material a product is made of. A boat wax has a wax base which is typically carnauba, while a boat polish is made of different chemicals and polymer technology.

Boat wax is best used on new boats with light oxidation; it can be applied by hands or boat buffers. Anglers can also use boat polishes on new boats.

You can also use it on old ones, but the oxidation must be cleaned and removed first. Boat polish can be applied by hand or an electric polishing machine.

Boat Type

You should also know the type of boat you own before deciding what to buy. Not all waxes are compatible with all boat materials.

The typical components of boats are gel coats and fiberglass, so you should be aware of the products that are compatible with these materials.

Not all waxes are also saltwater compatible, so you also have to look into that.

Protection Levels

Wax products are designed to protect your boats; you should know what protection levels they offer.

You should know whether your chosen boat wax can protect your vessel from UV damage, remove light oxidation, scratches, and stains.

A good wax should be able to protect your boat from all of these damaging factors.

Ease of Application

It would be best if you chose marine waxes that are easy to apply, especially during emergencies. You must know how to apply the boat wax to provide your boat the protection that it needs.

The easy application also saves you the hassle and effort of cleaning your boat for long hours.

Quality

It is always best to choose high-quality wax for your vessels. A good wax should be long-lasting and provide durable protection without damaging your boat surfaces.

It should not only give your boat finish shine and high gloss but also protect it from UV rays, scratches, stains, and oxidations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you wax a fiberglass boat.

Yes, you can. Many boat owners wax their boats to protect them from harsh environments while at the same time restoring the shine, gloss, and color of your boats.

What wax is best for fiberglass?

The best wax for fiberglass is Meguiar’s M6332 Premium Wax. It gives the best shine and color and provides them with the best protection they need against the sun, rain, and saltwater.

With this, you should always remember to research properly before finally deciding on what wax to purchase.
