While I didn't buy a yacht from Mr Purcell, he spent a great deal of time showing. Very knowledgeable, kind and gave great advice. Sitting on the sidelines now, as I have had many vessels over the years, and, again, even though no purchase was made, he was gracious. If I jump back into boating again, I would definitely ask for his help with my purchase. Look Gerry up! You will surely be happy that you did.

Highly Recommend! Gerry Purcell did an outstanding job in every aspect when I purchased a 36 Aft Cabin Carver this year. He arranged for the boat to be examined, arranged negotiations for a fair price, accommodated me while in town to view the boat, expertly completed all necessary paperwork. The deal would not have been possible without his help and continued to support me after the sale, by providing a slip for several months at a very reasonable rate. Gerry knows boats and discloses everything about the boat he is listing, he will even tell you of potential problems and what you need to do to ensure your yacht is safe before getting underway. My boat had some deferred maintenance, he told me everything I would need to do to get the boat underway again. I cannot think of anyone better equipped to put together a yacht purchase, his ethics are beyond reproach, he really makes a deal work for both the seller and the buyer. I'm not sure what happened with the other Yelp rater that gave Gerry a One star, other then he selectively listened to the boat description before he flew out...in other words, I'm sure Gerry disclosed fully any issues before the potential buyer flew out to view the boat.

We purchased a yacht that Mr. Purcell was selling and it seemed very reasonable but come to find we got kicked out of the slip after purchase and EVERYTHING seemed to be falling apart and wrong with the boat. He said it was in working order and we could move with it, however it has been nothing but repairs and replacements and nothing is in working order. I am very disappointed but this service

I recently worked with Gerry on a boat purchase. He was very thorough, knowledgeable, and took great care to make sure both buyer and seller knew the process. He was very fair to all parties and even helped move the boat around a few times until I am able to get out there since I live quite a distance away.

After reading a couple of negative reviews here, I must respond. I recently had dealings with Gerry Purcell and found him to be probably the most honest, conscientious, and fair yacht broker I have worked with in over 30 years of boating and buying and selling different vessels. He indeed goes the extra mile to assist both buyer and seller. The yacht broker doesn't 'guarantee' a slip in MDR; each dockmaster determines whether an applicant is qualified. Obviously, there was something in your background that the folks at Waves didn't like. There are several other docks in the marina.. did you apply at other places? Also, a survey, if desired, is always paid for by the buyer. If you decided not to proceed with your purchase, it is in no way the fault of the broker. Same goes for the haul out. You requested it, you pay for it. Again, not the responsibility of the broker. If you were not knowledgeable about your purchase, don't try to blame the broker. I have found that Gerry is honest, forthright, and goes the extra mile to be fair to both buyer and seller. If I were in the market for another vessel, my first call would be to Gerry.

This brokerage sucks. I listed my boat in an "open" listing with him. He would send people to the boat without actually coming himself. None of the buyers were even close to qualified. When I told him that it wasn't working out and that I wanted to end my listing with him, he refused. I laughed. It was my boat and an open listing. Told him "good luck showing the boat when i won't allow you onboard or show it to anyone you send." Listed the boat with H&S and the boat sold in two days. What a difference.

i have a long and glorious history with gerry purcell, and cannot think of one instance where he did not go the extra mile, handle delicate negotiations with great care, and be that very rare thing in the boat service business, honest and forthright---- here's my story---- 6 or seven years ago, i decided to buy an power boat, to use recreationally and as an office (I'm a screenwriter)---- i met gerry and over a period of time he showed me several boats, all in immaculate condition, but for my own idiosyncratic needs, none of them seemed right for me---gerry was always gracious about putting my needs before his, and was very patient with my astonishing ignorance and inability to commit--- after a period of time i found a boat through another broker (a friend of a very experienced sailor friend) which i bought---it was a repo, and 74 feet long!--- when i needed a slip, gerry came to my rescue, getting me a terrific slip in the best location in marina del rey, at what i considered a good price--- over time whenever i needed any kind of advice or work done on the boat, i called gerry, and he was always helpful and generous with his huge store of knowledge and contacts, frequently checking on me, just to see if i was okay---- eventually, when i went to work on a project that was going to take me out of town for long periods of time, and would last for 2 years, i spoke to gerry (and only gerry) about the possibility of selling the boat--- he came up with a price and a list of thing he thought i needed to do to help sell it----since i am both clueless and astonishingly lazy, gerry took over, got all of the work done at reasonable prices by people he knew, and in several cases did the work himself--- now, at this point, i have know and relied on this man for about 5 years, and he has yet to make a nickel on me!----- fast forward--- anyway, gerry sold the boat, handled all the negotiations and paperwork, finally made some money for himself, and was a super gentleman throughout----- don't let that john ford-like new england exterior fool you, gerry is a man of great character, a rare thing in the boat business, a completely decent person and businessman---

I was interested in a boat that Mr. Purcell had listed at his brokerage. Marina Del Rey is quite far from me and required a flight to go there and view the particular boat I was interested in. Since the boat was quite far, I called and emailed him several times regarding the condition of the boat. His asking price was quite high in comparison to identical boats listed elsewhere. He assured me that all the boat needed was some upholstery work and was ready to sail away. Ok, no problem. Upholstery is no big deal in the big picture. I carefully planned and saved and eventually took a day off from work and hopped a flight to Marina Del Rey. Mr Purcell greeted me and led me to the boat for sale. Uuuuugh! Upon my first visual inspection of the outside of the boat it looked as if the boat had been sunk and just hauled off the bottom of the ocean! It was very dirty and unkempt. Before going inside the boat I found that all the running rigging was rotten, the painted epoxy grip on the deck was worn off, the hull was cracked in several places and was 'covered up' with silicon caulking, the sails were over 35 years old, the paint was faded, worn and scratched. There was no bottom paint on it and it was fouled with weeds. At this point I only proceeded into the cabin because I had traveled so far to see the boat. Mr. Purcell was right. The upholstery did need replacing. What Mr. Purcell also failed to mention was that It also needed extensive carpentry work as there were random holes in all the walls with rats nests of wires hanging out, the hull/deck was leaking into the main salon, a refrigerator was completely demolished and dis-assembled, the sink was full of termites, there were 110 outlets in the shower!, the finished carpentry in the main cabin did not match, there was broken glass inside the boat, and there were rats nests of wires in the engine compartment. After I had 'viewed' the boat, I wanted to ask him about the price. I told him the boat was going to be quite a project for some one to which he agreed. (On the telephone, the boat was ready to sail away!) I then asked him what he thought about the price and he told me the boat was only going to go up in value. At this point I didn't know what to say and I left rather stunned at the whole experience. I was actually pretty stunned that I had flown so far and at great expense to look at this boat when I had specifically asked questions about the sails, the rigging, the engine, the systems and the interior and Mr. Purcell had specifically assured me that all the systems were fine, and the boat was in excellent working order. Mr Purcell clearly misrepresented the boat he was selling (for what reason I cannot imagine) and really wasted my time and money in pursuit of something I was not interested in (at least at anywhere near the price he was asking). I would not recommend buying a boat from Mr.Purcell nor would I recommend listing a boat with him as he also clearly lacks the social skills to properly conduct himself with buyers or sellers.

I bought my first boat in 1960 while in college. I have purchased and sold many boats since then had dealings with many brokers; some positive and some not so positive. I made contact with Gerry Purcell when I called regarding a boat that he had listed for sale on Yachtworld. I had no idea who he was nor did he know who I was. After asking what I planned to do with the boat he discouraged me and spent 45 minutes on the phone offering advice. That kind of honesty and willingness to spend time with a stranger convinced me that regardless of where I found a boat of interest he would be my broker. Subsequently, I found him to have an encyclopedic knowledge of all things boats and uncompromising honesty. You can't go wrong at Purcell Yacht Brokerage. He is expanding to San Diego.

Gerry Purcell did a fantastic job of finding a seller for our sloop-rigged day sailer. He handled all aspects of the transaction with professionalism and good humor. We appreciated his vast experience and ability to put together a deal that satisfied both parties. Thank you, Gerry!
