The Spit is generally known for its more up-market venues (Palazzo Versace, anyone?), but families can enjoy the luxury lifestyle and views on a budget with a visit to the Southport Yacht Club. Family friendly dining with a kids gated playground? Let’s go!

The club’s Waterfront Restaurant serves up picture perfect views alongside a delicious buffet breakfast every Saturday and Sunday (7.30am – 10am), making it the perfect start to your weekend beach trip! Enjoy eggs benedict, pastries, pancakes, bacon, fruit platters, cereals and yoghurts while you look out at the sailing boats and luxury yachts. What I loved the most was the positioning of the restaurant means you don’t even get a glimmer of a glare off the water, and it was so relaxing to sit and watch the boats (and seagulls) pass by.

If breakfast isn’t your thing, the Waterfront Restaurant also serves lunch and dinner, 7 days a week! Gold Coasters are able to dine from the alacarte menu up to three times a year before requiring membership to the yacht club. Not up for a meal, but fancy an afternoon drink? Live Entertainment is available both Friday nights at the 4Shore Bar on the Quarter Deck and Sunday afternoons at Waterfront restauarnt.

The best part about dining at the Southport Yacht Club, is how kid friendly they are! There is a large sized gated playground only metres away from the dining area, kitted out with a boat so kids can pretend they’re sailing their own yacht across the Broadwater. Let them burn off some of that energy on the playground without worrying they’ll burn in the Queensland sun – there’s a huge shad sail over everything to help keep them cool. The restaurant also provides kids meals (also known as Cadets meals), and on Mondays and Tuesdays kids eat for just $5!

Southport Yacht Club Marina, located on one of the most beautiful waterfronts on the Gold Coast.

With 300 berths in the Marina, we are also home to Australia’s Largest Floating Megayacht Berth at 160 meters, accommodating vessels up to 135 meters. The Megayacht berth offers up to 600amp power , camera surveillance across the dock, grants a drive on pontoon for ease of provisioning and a service road for craning or bunkering. 

Southport Yacht Club is also an Australian Port of Entry for clearing vessels arriving and departing Internationally.

Additional facilities on hand include, 24hr security surveillance, access to wireless internet, proximity card Access, gym, onshore amenities, 24hr fuel jetty with fuel bunkering available for larger vessels. SYC h ardstand has a 35m ton travel lift providing easy access to 20 hardstand places ranging in size from 20ft to 50ft.

Exclusive Waterfront Dining can be enjoyed from our two Gold Coast locations. The award-winning Waterfront Restaurant at the SYC Main Beach Clubhouse or the Bistro at the SYC Hollywell Sailing Academy.

The north facing 4Shore Bar, located outdoors on the lawn, broadcasting the Marina is the perfect place for the captains and crew to unwind, watch the sunset, enjoy a cocktail, or listen to live music.

Southport Yacht Club also hosts an array of waterfront function spaces that capture stunning and picturesque views, overlooking the private marina and tranquil Gold Coast Broadwater.

Southport Yacht Club

Weather was in our favor this week as temperatures cooled and gave us so many opportunities to get on the water. Our weekend started with the Annual Cornhole Tournament on Friday night. There were eight teams competing in the double elimination play. Instructor Joe Duffy kept things tight with his Maine State Prison- crafted corn hole measuring line. The teams battled it out with Sheila and Bob Flory in second place and Joe Duffy and Eleanor Marshall in first. They were delighted with the prize of a Southport General Store gift card.

The wind cooperated on Saturday and we had a sunny day with a perfect southerly breeze for the Five Islands Ice Cream Race. Racers were able to reach across to Five Islands and then reach back to Cozy Harbor. No tacking! Near Five Islands a family of porpoises came through the fleet adding to the afternoon’s joys. It was great to see nine turnabouts out there with a range of ages participating, from younger children to adults. The only problem with the race was a disorganized ice cream serving process in Five Islands. How did the crew from the fifth boat to arrive in Five Islands get served their ice cream before the first boat to arrive in Five Islands? This issue does not seem to be covered in the official US Sailing rule book. After some discussion it was decided that the trophies for the day should go to the first three boats to arrive in Five Islands. Therefore the first place cup went to the team of Suri Kelchner, Taylor Smith, and Hallie Mayer and 2nd place went to Graydon and Paige Smith. Thank you to Race Committee assistant Diane Lewis, and patrol boaters Hollyanna Bates, Oliver and Jen Phippen, and Pete Smith.

Maine State Opti’s is hosted by SYC once again this year. We are looking for families to house three teams looking for a place to stay. Contact Chase Brinegar at [email protected] if you can host July 31- Aug. 1.

This weekend is the SYC Seguin Island race on Saturday at 1 p.m. Visit the SYC website to register.

Tickets are going fast for the Lobster Bake this weekend on Saturday. You can purchase online or use the paper sign up at the club. Thursday evening is the deadline.

For the Rock the Boat 5K fundraiser for the Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation, we have a deadline of Wednesday at noon in order to be guaranteed a shirt. We try not to over order and have to get the order placed on Wednesday. Please sign up in you are planning to join us on Aug. 3. To register to run or walk visit our website or search for Rock the Boat 5K. We need a crew of volunteers to make the event happen. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to lend a hand!
