Welcome to the MYCQ Brisbane to Gladstone Multihull Yacht Race

Notice of race, sailing instructions, race tracker, race history, 2024 brisbane to gladstone flyer, offshore multihull rating (omr) system.

The MYCQ Administers the Offshore Multihull Rating (OMR) System, which is used to handicap all Multihull Yachts. It is similar to the IRC system used for monohulls but is tailored to be applied to all Multihull Designs. This website provides:

  • Specification  - includes an introduction and guidelines on how to prepare your boat and how to measure your sails
  • Measurement Form  - This form is used when measuring your yacht
  • Inventory Form  - This form is used to record everything onboard your boat at the time of measuring
  • Excel Version of the above forms
  • Information on the 2016 review and update.

The MYCQ regularly reviews the OMR formulas by looking at race results and analysing trends and new technologies to ensure the OMR system is current and as accurate as possible.

As with most handicapping systems, it is not perfect and rather than criticizing the system and the people that administer it we encourage you to become involved in the club and contribute to developing the system.

B2G Line Honours winner Celestial

First finishers in a historic and brutal Brisbane to Gladstone

Celestial was the first yacht across the Gladstone Harbour finish line at dawn on Sunday morning in what has been a historic but brutal 75th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race (75th B2G).

2022 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race overall winner and now line honours winner of the 75th B2G, Celestial’s owner/skipper, Dr Sam Haynes stepped off the yacht onto the dock and described this year’s race as “brutal” due to northerly wind conditions and violent storm cells.

Celestial finished the 2023 B2G in a time of 1 day, 19 hours, 30 minutes and 53 seconds, more than doubling the time they spent on course last year, when they broke the race record for the fastest conventionally ballasted yacht in a time of 19 hours, 24 minutes and 52 seconds.

As further evidence of how tough the race was on the yachts and sailors, Celestial was met on the dock by an ambulance who were required to attend to a crew member with suspected shoulder and rib injuries after being up the main mast attending to an issue with the main halyard.

Sam spoke on the dock about his experience during the challenging 75th edition of the B2G.

“We were getting a lot of squalls. There was a water spout travelling along beside us up near Indian Head,” Sam said.

“A lot of sail changes and a lot of different ways of coping with the weather were required,” he said.

“It was like a washing machine out there.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a line honours title in a significant race like this. This is really good for us. It is fantastic.”

Celestial’s finish was followed by Ocean Crusaders J-Bird III, the first electric boat to complete the race with female helm Annika Thomson, Maritimo 11 who currently lead on corrected time, Mayfair, Not a Diamond, Kerumba, Wedgetail, Hutchies Yeah Baby, LCE Old School Racing and Crankster.

Eight yachts were forced to retire on the first night of the race after sailing through two storm cells due to yacht damage, crew sea sickness or seamanship decision. Indigo II retired today just before the finish due to a torn mainsail taking the total race retirements to a tally of nine.

Celeste – which is on target to finish tonight – reported on Good Friday evening to have been hit by lightning and lost all electronics from the strike. The crew still had VHF radio connectivity and iridium so chose to continue.

Hutchies Yeah Baby were confronted with a mainsail issue upon sunset but got it back in their mast track and were also able to continue.

Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Commodore, Ian Gidlow said it has been one of the toughest races in the history of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race.

“This year’s 2023 race fleet will go down in history for the 75th edition of our mighty race as having had to overcome everything from the calm to the storm and everything in between,” Mr Gidlow said.

“As we see the race fleet now finishing, it is looking more and more likely that one of the smaller boats in the race fleet will win overall on corrected time and put their name on The Courier-Mail Cup,” he said.

“At this stage the corrected time to beat is 2 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes and 2 seconds.”

Pagan II is at the back of the fleet and is expected to finish late this evening.

2022 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race winner, Celestial will be officially crowned line honours winner at the presentation on Monday morning, while the smaller boats are currently in the box seat for taking the Courier-Mail Cup, the win overall on corrected time.

Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race winner a 56-year-old handmade vessel named Wistari

Four gentleman clutch a shiny large cup with big smiles on their faces.

It was the first time a local had won the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race in decades and to do it Scott Patrick literally sailed through a storm.

But when he hoisted the Courier Mail Cup last night, he thought only of his father, Noel.

Scott Patrick sails the Wistari yacht, date and location unknown.

Noel Patrick built the winning 56-year-old yacht, named Wistari, with bits and pieces he gathered from around the port city.

"The hull's made out of war surplus ply that was used to make mosquito bombers," Scott said.

"The deck was made out of the cheapest ply he could find.

"I'm impressed how well she's held together."

A historic win

This year was the 51st time Wistari had sailed in the Queensland's flagship race, which equalled the record for the most starts from the one yacht in the race.

wistari yacht

It was also the fifth time it had won the cup, which made it the equal second most successful vessel in the race's history.

After the win, Scott couldn't help but think of his dad as it was the first time since he died that the Wistari had won the cup.

"The fact that she was just getting older and older I couldn't imagine it'd ever happen," he said.

"By coincidence, this year marks the exact time where I've owned the boat as long as my father."

When Noel died in 1993, Wistari was "at the end of her life" and Scott said he had been "nursing" the vessel for the past 28 years.

Noel Patrick aboard a yacht, date and location unknown.

"When we took it to Brisbane in 1994, in memory of Dad, bits were breaking off," he said.

"It's just been constant work ever since to bring her back … it's a lot of nursing."

Race had 'horrific' moments

A barrage of winds and rough seas in the 73rd Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race put the restoration to the test.

"We could not have kept pushing the boat that hard without the crew I had. Simple as that," Scott said.

"The scariest moment was Friday night as we were flying into the beach at Double Island Point.

"The boat was pretty much submerged … we had water going over the whole deck, down the companionway, filling my bunk and everything in my locker got full of water."

These same conditions forced race favourite and record holder Black Jack from the competition when it snapped its mast mid-race.

Yet somehow, the hand-built Wistari pulled through.

The Wistari, which was built by Noel Patrick from surplus materials after the war, pictured in the 1960s.

"We really did punish her. We ripped out one winch, I headbutted one of the windows and broke one of the windows," Scott said.

"The brand new mainsail looks pretty second hand right now.

"But she still lives."

Port Curtis Sailing Club former Commodore John Ibell said he was glowing with pride for Scott.

"It's a really good story," he said.

"When you have a couple of boats like ours put together on mum-and-dad budgets … and you get home safely and you win, you can't ask for anything better."

'Ridiculously fast' design

Wistari had not won the race in 39 years and one of the original crew from the yacht's first race congratulated Scott on the win.

"He came up and said, 'You've finally earned the rights to the boat now,'" he said.

But Scott was reluctant to accept the many accolades.

He said the win was more about the yacht than about any of its crew.

"I just happened to be the caretaker," Scott said.

"The design Dad did, it gave us a boat that was ridiculously fast against its rating, even after 56 years.

"Everyone calls it a legend."

Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race

About the race.

yacht race brisbane gladstone

The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is considered by the public to be one of Australia’s flagship ocean yacht races.  The highest profile Easter Weekend sporting event, setting sail annually.

From the start in Bramble Bay near Sandgate, the yachts proceed up past the Redcliffe peninsular, then turn towards Moreton Island, passing Tangalooma resort before heading north past the Sunshine Coast, K’Gari and Lady Elliott Island and on to Gladstone, a distance of approximately 308 nautical miles.

Entrants will gather from across Australia as well as from overseas. They compete for the Courier Mail Cup, one of the oldest perpetual trophies in Australia that has been competed for on a continual basis.

The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is steeped in history and tradition with the first Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race held during Easter 1949. The first race saw seven vessels start, two of which carried radios while Brisbane’s Homing Pigeon Club supplied pigeons to the others for position reporting. Each yacht issued with birds was to release two each day.

yacht race brisbane gladstone

The first person to finish the race was Doug Perrins on the bow of Hoana. Having sailed through strong winds and heavy seas, Hoana finished with an elapsed time of 47hrs 08min 25sec, a very creditable time which stood until 1955.

In 2009 the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race was voted as one of the icons of Queensland.

In 2008 QCYC was the winner of the Queensland Tourism Award in the Festival and Events Category.

In 2001 the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race was selected as one of the platforms for the Centenary of Federation celebrations and a Centenary of Federation perpetual trophy is awarded to the winning team each year.

Rupert Murdoch won the race (line honors) twice in 1964 and 1965 and held the race record for twelve years from 1964 to 1976.

The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race has weathered worse storms than the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race with Cyclone Emily causing havoc in 1972 as winds reached up to 96 knots. There were no casualties but only five of the 25 race starters finished the race that year. The race maintains an exemplary safety record.  The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race B2G is a Registered Trade Mark of the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Inc.

THE 75TH EDITION BRISBANE TO GLADSTONE YACHT RACE

Highly competitive pocket rocket yacht azzurro is now under queensland ownership and  set to contest the gladstone ports corporation 75 th edition brisbane to gladstone yacht race (b2g) which sets sail  on good friday (7 th april 2023).  .

Azzurro’s new owner is Jack Kliner who swiftly made a deal to buy the boat from former owner and legendary Australian  sailor, Shane Kearns on Constitution Dock at the conclusion of the 2022 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

The much-loved Sparkman and Stephens 34 (S&S 34) yacht, often touted the darling of Australian offshore racing, and  according to the yacht’s website is “the little boat that could,” has had a rich racing pedigree closely followed and admired  by Jack.

“Shane Kearns is a legend of sailing in Australia and a huge character within our sport but I have been following his  campaign and kept in touch with him over the last few years. I am an ongoing admirer of his inspirational story of  determination and dedication to prove how good this boat really is, so I have big shoes to fill,” Jack said.

“I had everything crossed that Shane would win the 2022 Sydney to Hobart overall with Azzurro and I wasn’t expecting him  to sell the boat until he achieved that goal, but personal reasons forced an earlier sale so when I caught wind of it, I nabbed  him dockside in Hobart to strike a deal and the rest is history,” he said.

“Shane’s restoration of Azzurro was immaculate with her rich blue hull, sparkling white deck and faultless stainless-steel  fittings and even a carbon fibre toilet, the boat is a sight to behold and a proven contender in offshore racing in Australia.  Better still, Azzurro was meticulously prepared for the recent Sydney to Hobart and comes with a very extensive sail  wardrobe so other than a lick of antifoul, we are bursting at the seams to set sail in the 75 th Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht  Race.”

Jack, who is a member of Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC), personally sailed Azzurro up to his home base in  Newport from Sydney using the delivery miles to acquaint himself and the crew with his new acquisition.
