The most exciting new yachts at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023

The most expensive yachts for sale at the Monaco Yacht Show 2024

The highlight of the superyacht calendar, this year's Monaco Yacht Show is fast approaching – and brokers are bringing their best. Those exploring the docks at Port Hercule will be able to visit and purchase world-class builds from pedigree shipyards and studios from across the globe, including World Superyacht Awards winners, social media sensations and builds capable of exploring the Antarctic.

BOAT takes a closer look at the lineup, beginning with the world's most expensive superyacht ...

Builder : Oceanco Length : 105.3m

The most expensive yacht for sale at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show is H3 . Her three-year rebuild, beginning in 2020, won her international acclaim and a World Superyacht Award . Virtually nothing was left from her previous life as Indian Empress except the hull, which had also been extended a further 10 metres. The refit also added a piano in the main saloon which previously belonged to Elton John – it's the one on which he wrote the album Songs from the West Coast . Her amenities are too numerous to mention but some standouts include a large pool with a waterfall feature, a huge spa and wellness area with a nail salon and a climate-controlled winter garden in the owner's suite.

H3 is asking €295,000,000 with Edmiston .

Builder : Oceanco Length : 90m

Another World Superyacht Awards winner , Dar is inspired by a hammerhead shark and features sinuous lines, wide set wing stations and a mast modelled after a dorsal fin, courtesy of Luiz De Basto . The nautical theme continues indoors, including a school of fish modelled from Venetian plaster which winds its way up the stairs – one of several pieces made by DKT Artworks . But Dar is renowned for her extensive use of glass. There are 390 square metres in her superstructure alone, measuring 30 millimetres thick at its heaviest point.

Dar is asking €208,000,000 with Large Yacht Corp .

Builder : Amels Length : 77.8m

Tasked with a brief to "defy convention and find ways to connect with the ocean", naval architect Espen Øino and interior designer François Zuretti came together to create Energy . The design duo first worked together on Blohm & Voss ' 74.5-metre Eco , now Zeus , with Martin Francis in the 1980s. The superyacht has an impressive volume of 2,885GT which houses accommodation for 14 guests, an upper deck aft pool, a spacious gym, a large beach club with spa and a glass elevator, to name a few. She has only been used privately since new and was recently selected as BOAT International 's brokerage boat of the month .

Energy is asking €199,000,000 with Burgess and Cecil Wright and Partners .

Builder : Abeking & Rasmussen Length : 78.4m

Amaryllis is best known for her lavish Art Deco interiors, designed by Reymond Langton and featuring Macassar ebony furniture, chandeliers and custom floral panels. She can sleep twelve guests across six cabins, including an owner's cabin with a clawfoot bed, lime marble en suite and 180-degree ocean views. Standout features include a piano lounge and a cinema suite, while her beach club boasts a dedicated spa with a sauna, steam room, plunge pool and massage room. Amaryllis last underwent a major refit in 2019 and will be looking fresh on the docks for prospective buyers.

Amaryllis is asking €89,000,000 with Burgess , Merle Wood & Associates and Moravia Yachting .

Planet Nine

Builder : Admiral - The Italian Sea Group Length : 73.2m

Planet Nine is another recognisable build with her militaristic, gunmetal-grey exterior by British designer Tim Heywood . But don't be fooled: her interiors are airy and contemporary, styled by Mlinaric, Henry and Zervudachi and custom-built by German luxury outfitter Fitz. Accommodation is across eight cabins, including the owner’s suite with massive windows and doors out to balconies, another master suite on the main deck and a VIP with a private outside area on the bridge deck. Key features include a commercial-standard helipad, two large beach clubs and a sundeck spa pool with water retention tank.

Planet Nine is asking €79,500,000 with Fraser .

Builder : Amels Length : 60m

Another Tim Heywood design, Moonstone is the second unit in the Amels 200 series and was sold less than five months before her delivery. The Dutch shipyard is known for its 'risky' on spec builds but, as Damen Yachting sales manager Jorrit Pilaar said at the time: "We have never finished a boat without a client." Accommodation is across six cabins, including a VIP on the bridge deck and a generous main deck owners’ suite with a balcony and Mongolian marble bathroom. A sundeck Jacuzzi, gym and massage room is the standout leisure feature, though the superyacht's multi-beam sonar system and 3D ocean floor mapping will appeal to certain buyers.

Moonstone is asking €74,900,000 with Superyacht Sales and Charter .

Builder : Sanlorenzo Length : 61.5m

The first 62Steel model, Lemon Tree was developed to slot in between Sanlorenzo's 57Steel and its flagship, the 73Steel . The superyacht is recognised by her "sober", understated exterior but best known for her owner's suite, situated on the upper deck with oversized windows, a study and a private terrace with swimming pool. Her two large garages were also a design focus, positioned in the middle of the yacht so that launching and retrieving the 9.5-metre tender and toys would not interfere with Lemon Tree 's spacious beach club zone.

Lemon Tree is asking €59,500,000 with Y.CO .

Builder : Astilleros Armón Length : 68.2m

Delivered in 2021, Wayfinder is the second unit in the Shadowcat series and builds on the capability of the shipyard's flagship catamaran, Hodor , which was delivered in 2019 . With a 14-metre beam, Wayfinder has plenty of space for a helicopter deck – doubling as a pickleball court or events space – plus a hangar for an EC-145 and can store vast amounts of food supplies, dive equipment and water toys. She also sports a fully-equipped medical suite, 12 individual staff cabins and quarters for 20 crew in 12 additional cabins. The superyacht is reportedly owned by the former managing director of Microsoft, Bill Gates.

Wayfinder is asking €55,000,000 with Edmiston.

Builder : Icon Yachts Length : 67.5m

Loon is both one of most recognisable superyachts on the social media scene – owed to her trend-savvy crew – and an enviable charter platform, with the broker reporting over $13 million in gross revenues in 18 months.  On the main deck, the raised pool is the crowd pleaser – panels of glass filter light down to the beach club which was extended considerably during a 2014 refit with Icon Yachts . Accommodation is across a main deck master suite with a private lounge, a VIP suite on the upper deck and lower deck cabins with direct access to said beach club. Exterior design is by British studio RWD , with an interior by Studio Linse .

Loon is asking $47,500,000 with Merle Wood & Associates.

Serenissima I

Builder : Mengi Yay Length : 47.5m

Serenissima I is one of the newest entries on the list, with her delivery announced in August 2024 . She is the first unit in a new Mengi Yay series designed by Italian firm Nuvolari Lenard . The yacht was commissioned by an experienced owner who wanted the deck and interior space of a larger vessel in a Med-friendly package, with "showstopper features" that include an elevator, a dedicated owner's deck and "one of the largest [sundecks] in this category of yachts". The model also has a main saloon complete with a balcony and a wine cellar.

Serenissima I is asking €35,800,000 with Northrop & Johnson .

Queen Mavia

Builder : Oceanco Length : 62m

Queen Mavia was delivered in 2001 to an exterior by Evan K. Marshall and interiors by Marshall and The A Group . 19 years later, a refit revitalised the Dutch build by extending her aft deck by six metres to accommodate a beach club, toy storage and swim platform, while the second and third decks were extended to offer more outdoor space. The helideck was also converted to include a hot tub and a spa including a massage room, sauna room and gym. Another highlight is the bridge deck, reserved exclusively for the owner and featuring a private lounge and full onyx stone bathroom.

Queen Mavia is asking €34,900,000 with Fraser.

Builder : Perini Navi Length : 56m

Fidelis is the tenth and final unit in Perini Navi's 56M series and "has never stopped sailing since she was delivered," according to the shipyard. The owners were extensive charterers before commissioning the sailing yacht, which was nominated at the 2015 World Superyacht Awards . She has undergone an extensive refit programme, most recently in 2023 when she received a hull wrap in La Spezia, Italy. Key features include an outdoor sunken cockpit, a flybridge with sunbeds and al fresco dining and balconies to starboard and port.

Fidelis is asking €32,000,000 with Edmiston.

Builder : CRN Length : 60m

Delivered in 2011, Aifer emerged from an extensive refit at Icon Yachts in 2019 with a new exterior paint job and various interior improvements, including a new bridge. Her main social hubs are found in the main saloon – arranged with two large settees, armchairs and formal dining for up to 12 guests – and the sundeck, which comes complete with sunloungers and a Jacuzzi flanked with sunpads. Accommodation includes a  master cabin located on the main deck with an office, his and hers walk-in wardrobes, sofa area and balcony.

Aifer is asking €31,500,000 with Camper & Nicholsons and IYC .

Builder : SilverYachts Length : 73.3m

Dragonfly was hailed as the fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruiser when she was delivered in 2009, with a transatlantic range of 22 knots. Her outdoor cinema, large sun pad that can convert into a dance floor and swim platform – dubbed the "ultimate toy launchpad" by the broker – are the major crowd pleasers. She was also commended for her contribution to the disaster relief effort in Vanuatu after Hurricane Pam devastated the island in 2015. Exterior design is courtesy of Espen Øino , while her rich, ambient interiors are by Danielo Silvestrin .

Dragonfly is asking €27,000,000 with Y.CO.

Black Legend

Builder : Overmarine Length : 49.9m

Black Legend is designed inside and out by Italian shipyard Overmaine and is "one of the most iconic Mangusta yachts ever built", according to the broker. That moniker is worth a visit alone, as are her Asian-inspired interiors, which incorporate a rich palette of red, black and gold. On the lower deck, the full-beam owner's suite features a private study and dressing area, which is further complemented by a gym, cinema, and three guest cabins, including a VIP cabin. She was commissioned by a highly experienced owner and has only been used under this original ownership since her delivery in 2017.

Black Legend is asking €26,900,000 with Camper & Nicholsons.

Builder : Palmer Johnson Length : 52.4m

Delivered in 2016, Sanam was the final unit built at Palmer Johnson's US facility, making her a unique addition to this year's lineup. The yacht has the same striking Nuvolari Lenard lines and low-profile design as her sisters DB9 and Bliss and the she has only ever been used privately since commission. Entertainment-optimised features include a pair of pools, one of which sits on the foredeck and spans 24 square metres. The second is located on the sundeck, adjacent to a shaded seating area with drop-down cinema screen, gym equipment and sunpad spread.

Sanam is asking €26,900,000 with Worth Avenue Yachts .

Builder : Baglietto Length : 39.8m

Club M w as designed for an owner with 30 years of boating experience who spent three years on the design process, visiting and sounding out designers and yards in Europe. The effort paid off in more ways than one, with the superyacht now having a Neptune and a Design & Innovation Award to her name. Highlights include a main deck owner's cabin with an extending balcony, a glass-sided Jacuzzi and a gym on the lower deck. Hidden ladders allow crew members to access decks without disturbing guests, with privacy being high on the owner's design brief.

Club M is asking €19,900,000 with Christie Yachts .

The Most Impressive Superyachts at the Monaco Yacht Show

Following a summer of record demand this year’s event was glitzier than ever.

By Irenie Forshaw

Luisine

Each September, thousands of yacht builders, designers and owners descend on Port Hercule for the Monaco Yacht Show. It is here, in the heart of the picturesque Côte d’Azur, that boat lovers make their annual pilgrimage to catch a glimpse of the world’s newest – and most exciting – vessels.

This year, the hotly anticipated event took place between September 28 and October 1. And, following a summer of record demand for superyachts spurred by the pandemic, the 2022 iteration was bigger and glitzier than ever.

With over 600 exhibitors showcasing 125 superyachts, there was no shortage of incredible boats on display. So, whether you’re considering taking the plunge and purchasing a yacht of your own, or you’re simply here to marvel at the latest builds, we’ve rounded up the most impressive vessels on display at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Project TIME

Project TIME yacht exterior

Kicking off our list of the biggest reveals at the Monaco Yacht Show is Project TIME. The 282-ft explorer yacht concept is the brainchild of German shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen and Valentin Design.

Suited for cold and warm water expeditions, the ship has been designed to travel everywhere from Antarctica to the South Pacific Islands. Powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, Project Time would deliver a maximum speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 14 knots, and a range of 5,000 nautical miles.

Boasting a helipad platform, submarine, two lounges and even an onboard German brewery, this is no ordinary yacht. The extravagant vessel also features an extra wide owner’s duplex suite complete with two marble bathrooms and an expansive balcony.

Dutch shipyard Feadship unveiled its eleventh cutting-edge yacht concept at the show, Slice. Studio de Voogt was brought in for the project, with the ambitious goal of turning “the inside out and the outside in”. To this end, the design team fitted the yacht with a glass strip running from bow to stern, bathing the decks in natural light.

Unlike many yachts that are plagued by gloomy corridors and claustrophobic living spaces, the interiors onboard Slice are bright and breezy. At the heart of the yacht on the main deck is a sprawling 750-sq-ft atrium flanked by cascading circular balconies, which, according to Feadship is so much more than a lobby and instead becomes “a destination in its own right”.

In a sign of Feadship’s dedication to using the latest technology, Slice would be fitted with a propulsion system powered by four dual-fuel generators modified to run on both methanol and non-fossil diesel (hydrotreated vegetable oil), with the generated power delivered to two Azimuthing pods.

Luisine yacht with helicopter

Our list of the best superyachts on display at Monaco Yacht Show would not be complete without mentioning Lusine. The 196-ft vessel is Heesen’s largest ever steel Fast Displacement motor yacht and features a sleek silhouette with black thermo-bonded dark glass windows to keep out prying eyes.

Perhaps most impressive of all is the touch-and-go helipad on the sundeck which can accommodate an Airbus H-135. Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design was brought in to mastermind the lavish interiors. Lusine comfortably sleeps twelve set across six spacious staterooms, each of which has been thoughtfully adorned with bespoke furnishings and elegant sculptures. The most exclusive abode is the owner’s apartment located up on the bridge deck which has its own staircase to ensure total privacy.

Come Together

Come Together yacht

Next up on our list is the first vessel in Amel’s new 60 Limited Edition Series. Designed by Espen Oeino International and built in the Netherlands, Come Together was delivered to her owner this Spring for an estimated €69.5m (approx. $68.6m).

The gleaming new superyacht spans 196 ft and features a teak deck, steel hull and aluminum superstructure. Winch Design is responsible for the laid-back yet elegant interiors that are reminiscent of a relaxed family home in shades of walnut and bronze.

Come Together has been fitted with a hybrid propulsion system for smooth, quiet cruising and features an expansive sun deck and 157-ft swim platform.

XV67 yacht exterior

Winch Design and Heesen also unveiled XV67 at the Monaco Yacht Show – a brand new explorer yacht concept that builds on their XVenture design concept from four years ago.

The 187-ft vessel has been given a refreshed layout and updated with the latest technology. While the robust steel hull remains, she is 32 ft longer than her predecessor and the tenders have been moved to the open aft deck freeing up space for even larger guest cabins and an expansive three-story master stateroom.

As seems to be becoming commonplace onboard the newest superyachts, VX67 boasts a helipad (that functions as an al fresco cinema when not in use) and has space to store a personal submarine on deck.

Meyer took the Monaco Yacht Show as an opportunity to share the very first renderings of its sustainable One50 concept. The vessel – which was first unveiled a year ago at the 2021 show – is powered electrically by 25,000 kilowatts enabling her to reach a maximum speed of 23 knots.

After a year long wait to see what One50 could like, the renderings certainly don’t disappoint. Wellness is at the heart of the design; the 492-ft yacht features a retractable swimming pool, massage parlour, sauna and hammam. Other highlights include the top deck which is reserved entirely for the owner’s use and boasts an enormous suite complete with a private terrace.

Four Seasons Yacht

four seasons yacht rendering

Last but by no means least on our roundup of the most impressive vessels unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show is Four Seasons’ first branded yacht . Slated to set sail at the end of 2025, no expense has been spared by the luxury hotel group, with each suite costing a cool $4.2m to build.

The gigantic vessel will be 679 ft long and 88.6 ft wide with 14 decks and a total of 95 rooms and suites. While the initial launch is just one yacht, the order includes the option to add two further ships in the future – amounting to an eyewatering $1.1bn.

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will build the Four Seasons yacht in Trieste before Tillberg Design of Sweden and London-based Martin Brudnizki are brought in to put their stamp on the interiors. As you would expect from the luxury hotel brand, the yacht will feature an array of facilities including gourmet restaurants, bars, and a full-service spa.

Monaco Yacht Show

Every September since the year that Bryan Adams charted with “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,” yachting enthusiasts, buyers, charterers, yacht builders, and brokers have descended on the principality of Monaco for the annual Monaco Yacht Show . And this September, of course, is no different. Running September 26 through 29, show organizers expect 120 custom superyachts from builders, owners, and charter brokers around the globe to moor at the docks of Port Hercules. In addition, 40 of these yachts will be making their worldwide debut. The average length of participating yachts is 160 feet, but this year there will be seven superyachts between 230 and 328 feet in length. And four of them will be making their world debuts. In addition, watersports lovers can view and sometimes try out the 40 different tenders and toys on display. For those into automobiles, 10 luxury models will be exhibited at the show’s Car Deck. And we mustn’t overlook the two helicopters scheduled to appear. Overall, 580 companies participate in the annual show.

For superyacht clientele, the Monaco Yacht Show offers a VIP visit pack, the Sapphire Experience, which provides exclusive services to new yacht buyers and current owners. VIP visitors may participate in two invite-only events held the evening of September 25: the Monaco Yacht Summit—mini-lectures and discussions with a panel of yachting-industry experts to explore the practical questions of future yacht charterers or buyers—and the Inaugural Gala Event and 5th Monaco Yacht Show Superyacht Awards, where 400 guests celebrate the most spectacular yachts at the show.

Last year’s Monaco Yacht Show saw 36,400 people roaming the tents, halls, and docks. And usually, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco takes a (highly secured) stroll through the event, as well.

Oceanco Dar

The 295-foot Oceanco Dar promises to be one of the most impressive debuts at Monaco, not only for its scale but also for the stunning profile, which is reminiscent of a smaller, sportier motor yacht. Dar ’s interior by Nuvolari-Lenard is just as stylish, with six large, contemporary staterooms for 12 guests, including a palatial master suite. The yacht has quarters for 31 crew. Dar also has the amenities one would expect on a gigayacht, including a spacious beach club, elevator, spa, swimming pool, sauna, and helipad. The Dutch yard, known for its technical prowess, has fitted the yacht with the latest technology, including state-of-the-art zero-speed stabilizers.

Pride Mega Yachts Illusion Plus

By Danielle Cutler

Pride Mega Yachts recently launched the 290-foot, six-deck gigayacht   Illusion Plus . The interior design is by Netherlands-based Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design. London’s Rainsford Mann Design crafted the exterior, and Netherlands-based Azure Yacht Design performed the naval architecture. The interior fit-out was done by Dubai’s Greenline Yacht Interiors. It’s rare to find such an internationally respected group of names attached to a single build.

Combined with its nearly 300-foot length,  Illusion Plus ’s 50-foot beam makes the yacht palatial. One of the yacht’s most noteworthy features is the 860-square-foot owner’s apartment situated on its own deck. In addition to the apartment, the yacht has two VIPs, two double guest cabins, one twin, and two staterooms for the owner’s staff on the deck below. In total, the yacht accommodates 12 guests. Fifteen cabins house 25 crew members on the lower deck.

Illusion Plus  features four interior saloons and two dining rooms. Two Jacuzzis (including a huge main-deck hot tub with waterfall), three custom guest tenders, and a four-deck elevator all add to the yacht’s allure. A double-height atrium links the saloon on the main deck with the lounge on the deck. The tranquil spa offers a steam room, massage area, and sauna. The main deck has the gym and beauty salon.

Illusion Plus is propelled by a diesel-electric propulsion system with Azipull thruster pods that Pride developed with Rolls-Royce, making Illusion Plus  ultra-efficient and quiet. The yacht still offers up a speedy 17-knot maximum speed, 15-knot cruising speed, and 5,000 nautical mile range.

Turquoise Yachts Go

Turquoise Yachts Go

Turquoise Yachts launched its flagship  Go  earlier this year. London-based H2 Yacht Design gave the 253-foot superyacht a long, sleek hull, a bulbous bow, and geometric rudders to minimize drag while the yacht is running and to deliver good fuel economy. You can’t miss the yacht’s turquoise-blue hull.

Other noteworthy features include a large entrance area that meets a central elevator running from the garage to the sundeck. The yacht can accommodate up to 18 passengers, with two VIP suites, six guest staterooms, and an owners’ full-beam stateroom with a private lounge area and hot tub on their own private deck.  Go  also provides housing for 20 crew members.

Go ’s amidships garage carries a 31-foot limo tender and a 26-foot general-use tender in addition to multiple water toys. The garage’s location gave more space to the 1,744-square-foot aft beach club. Plus, the yacht’s two rear side panels fold down, giving guests instant access to the water on three sides.  Go ’s sundeck also features a large outdoor space and a 16-foot swimming pool. The foredeck is home to the helipad.

Tankoa Yachts Solo

By Geri Ward

Tankoa ’s new 236-foot superyacht  Solo , designed by Francesco Paszkowski, features a large winter garden, a large aft deck with a 20-foot transversal pool, an upper deck with a large saloon with incredible views, and glass bulwarks for unobstructed water views from the saloon and staterooms.

Margherita Casprini designed the warm and contemporary interior, with details such as Fendi Casa tables. Solo  offers up six staterooms for 12 guests, including a VIP suite, four double cabins, and a master suite on the owner’s deck. The private deck features fold-out terraces, direct access to the helipad, and a private exterior deck with a hot tub, bar, saloon, breakfast nook, and bathroom with shower. The owner’s study and the beach club’s massage room can transform into two more cabins; both have en suite bathrooms.

The beach-club area includes a glass-walled gym and foldout terrace, sauna (with its own foldout terrace), hammam, bathroom, bar, and TV. The side-loading tender garage houses two 24-foot tenders, personal watercraft, and a rescue boat.

Two 3516 Caterpillar engines give Solo a top speed of 17 knots. At 12.5 knots, the yacht has a range of more than 6,000 nm.

Amels Volpini 2

Amels Volpini 2

The 188-foot  Volpini 2 —the first Limited Editions superyacht using Dutch shipyard  Amels ’s first hybrid power configuration—is the first new yacht to be Tier III compliant under new emissions standards put in place by the International Maritime Organization. Volpini 2 features exterior design by Tim Heywood and interiors created by UK firm Reymond Langton.

The yacht accommodates a total of 12 guests in an owner’s suite with a 130-square-foot folding balcony and six guest suites, including a private VIP on the bridge deck.  Volpini 2 also houses 12 crew and a captain. Guests will enjoy the water-level beach club with wellness center. A central staircase and an elevator join the decks.

Volpini 2  has a top speed of 15.5 knots and a range of 4,500 nautical miles at 13 knots.

Mangusta El Leon superyacht Monaco Yacht Show

Mangusta El Leon.  Photo: Courtesy of Mangusta

Mangusta El Leon

Mangusta ’s flagship El Leon was launched in May. Designed by Alberto Mancini, the 178-foot superyacht is the first of its long-anticipated, fast-displacement GranSport aluminum line.

Mancini gave El Leon a long, sleek, and straight profile, with banks of windows providing sunlight to the saloon, master suite, and guest staterooms. A bulbous bow provides efficiency at displacement speeds and a solid maximum speed of 30 knots, provided by four 16V MTU 2000 diesel engines. The yacht has a range of 3,500 miles at optimal cruising speed.

Thanks to rotating doors, the stern transforms into a huge beach club with terraces. Up on the flybridge, a central bar serves both the open aft deck and a shaded area for alfresco dining.

Heesen Irisha

Heesen Irisha  Dick Holthuis

Heesen Irisha

The 167-foot all-aluminum Irisha from Dutch shipyard Heesen sports a stunning profile by Harrison Eidsgaard that was imagined to resemble a fighter jet with an unconventional color scheme. The designers combined a Snow White top with a Midnight Blue main deck, finishing with a metallic Pacific Blue hull. In changing sunlight,  Irisha ’s hull transforms from blue to a dark, olive-green. Concealed LED strips trace the lines of its profile at night, flooding the yacht’s glass surfaces with bright light.

The interior is a bit less dramatic but still beautiful with beige, gray, and blue. Special lighting was developed to draw a guest’s eye to the architectural and design elements in each room by creating different atmospheres, all with the touch of a button. Irisha was also designed to be a spacious, elegant gathering place. The main deck has a formal reception area for large groups, with a protected, aft-deck winter garden connecting to the main interior saloon. The 30-foot-long saloon has an “imperial” dining table that seats from 14 to 22 guests. In contrast with the social areas, the owner’s suite forward is a haven, with its own study, balcony with sliding glass doors, and his-and-her walk-in dressing rooms. Custom artwork defines the master suite and is laced across the yacht, including the main atrium with the yacht’s primary staircase.

Benetti Seven

Lucky number Seven boasts the longest fiberglass hull and aluminum superstructure that Italian yacht builder Benetti has ever launched. The 165-foot custom design has an impressive interior by London-based Bannenberg & Rowell Design, with an owner’s apartment on the main deck and four generous staterooms, totaling 3,330 square feet, on the lower deck. Benetti says that the upper deck can be converted into a VIP stateroom . Seven was built to be exceptionally quiet and vibration-free, something the guests on the lower deck will appreciate. The lower transom houses a beach club that overlooks the ocean. The twin Caterpillar C32 Acert engines produce a top speed of 15.5 knots. At 11 knots, Seven has a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

Wider 165 Cecilia

Cecilia , the new Wider 165, has features that the Italian builder pioneered, including a massive master suite with balconies, hybrid propulsion, and unusually large interior spaces. The Wider Beach is probably the yard’s most notable achievement. A Wider 32 is the yacht’s tender and fits into a specially designed garage. When the boat is launched directly into the ocean, the area fills and turns into a saltwater swimming pool. The Fulvio De Simoni design includes abundant exterior spaces and full-height windows. Cecilia has five staterooms for 10 guests, with quarters for nine crew members.

Ada Yacht Works All About U

The 164-foot custom sloop-rigged motor sailer All About U from Turkey-based Ada Yacht Works launched this last summer. Now the company’s flagship, the sailing yacht accommodates 12 guests in a full-beam master suite, full-beam VIP stateroom, and four double staterooms, plus four crew cabins. An open-plan saloon, dining room, and wheelhouse provide endless views. A 700-square-foot flybridge deck means plenty of room for plenty of guests, and a folding transom that transforms into a 280-foot beach club gets everyone into the water. The All About U sports a top speed of 15 knots, thanks to two Caterpillar engines.

CRN Latona superyacht Monaco Yacht Show

CRN Latona.  Photo: Federico Ferretti

Delivered in May by Italian yachtbuilder CRN , 164-foot Latona (formerly Project Superconero) makes its world premiere at the Monaco Yacht Show. Zuccon International Project and  CRN ’s engineers collaborated with the owner’s team to create a yacht that carries a glimmer of CRN’s past, the project adopting the name of CRN’s 75-foot SuperConero series of the 1960s and ’70s. That yacht, fairly small now, was an important project at the time because it was built in steel. The SuperConero design also had an iconic shape featuring an unusually long transom deck and sharp forefoot.

Latona inherited SuperConero cues such as a sharp entry and an extended transom deck, but modern features include a large social area on the foredeck, a terrace that folds out from the saloon, and a large beach club off the tender garage. Latona ’s flooding floating tender garage and beach club create a large waterside lounge area. The cockpit on the main deck, a level above, has a separate swimming pool and large area for socializing.

Boasting four decks and an underdeck, Latona ’s interior was created in the Liberty style, the Central European genre from the 1920s. The owner chose the sinuous dark-brown embroidery found across all decks. Depending on the area of the yacht, the pattern travels along both marble and carpeted floors as well as on the curved handrail of the internal staircase, contrasting nicely with the light-wood paneling on the walls. Full-height windows in the saloon and master suite provide incredible views of the water and welcome natural light. Latona accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms: the master, two VIPs, and two double cabins, plus housing for nine crew members.

Damen Yachts Power Play

Damen Yachts Power Play

Damen ’s new 182-foot  Power Play  support vessel does more than carry tenders, toys, and extra supplies. It’s kind of like a hybrid between a standard shadow boat and a primary superyacht, featuring a main-deck saloon, three large staterooms, and a rear deck for guests.

The sixth of  Damen ’s YS-5009 series,  Power Play  was made for adventure. It can be used for long-distance trips as a standalone yacht or as a support vessel for extra crew, supplies, or security. Damen made sure Power Play could operate in zero-discharge zones like marine sanctuaries.  Power Play features a 13-ton deck crane for launching large equipment such as personal submarines. Designed like a support vessel for running in rough seas, it sports a 20-knot maximum speed.

Rossinavi Flying Dagger

Rossinavi has built some of the world’s most interesting custom yachts in the world. Its recent launch, the 161-foot Flying Dagger , is no exception. Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design penned both the interior and exterior. The jaunty superstructure, sloped windscreen, and extended foredeck is mated to a straight-line hull, with large windows on both sides. The boat has three 2,600 hp MTU engines that are linked to three KaMeWa water jets. That will give the yacht a top end of 27 knots and a cruise speed of 23 knots. At a leisurely 12 knots, Flying Dagger has a 3,300-mile range.

Baglietto 48M T-Line

Baglietto ’s new 157-foot superyacht, the 48M T-Line, can rightly claim to be the yard’s first in-house design since the new executive team took over the iconic brand three years ago.  Baglietto , which built its first boat in 1854, is clearly moving into the next chapter of its long history with this new design.

Francesco Paszkowski has shaped  Baglietto  for nearly a decade, giving the yacht line its signature look, and he was commissioned to do the exterior for the 48 T-Line. Baglietto’s design team crafted the interior, using Italian walnut as the base wood and combining it with gold and bronze accents, light carpet, and cream-colored leathers. As a contrast to the dark joinery and tables, the team used a light-colored Canaletto-nut-pattern wood floor in the saloon and staterooms. The paneling on the walls features irregular cuts of inlaid wood to give it a modern feel without detracting from the yacht’s elegance. Floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the saloon and skylounge with natural light.

An unusually large beach club, more than 500 square feet, is devoted to a steam room, bar, and an area that could be used as a gym, spa, or some sort of quiet retreat center—not to mention the actual beach club that provides easy water access and a nice reprieve to enjoy the view.

Paszkowski’s exterior also includes social areas on the foredeck, flybridge, and aft cockpit—the sundeck alone has 1,400 square feet of open space.

Powered by twin Caterpillar diesel engines, the 48M T-Line has a 16-knot maximum speed and a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Mangusta Oceano 46 Q95

Mangusta ’s new tri-deck, 151-foot Q95 is a fresh departure for the Italian builder. The new steel-hulled model not only shows parent-company Overmarine’s commitment to the long-range displacement segment, but the Oceano 46 was also designed by a dream team comprised of two of Italy’s most celebrated designers. Stefano Righini’s exterior gives Q95 its contemporary look, a trait demanded by Mangusta owners, but Righini made sure to include large spaces that make the yacht a pleasure to cruise on over long distances. Those spaces include a swimming pool on the foredeck, a skydeck that invites relaxation and exceptional views of the water, and a rear cockpit on the main deck for alfresco dining. The interior by Alberto Mancini includes light-wood paneling on the walls, backlit stonework, and details like a dark-framed painting of tigers overlooking the formal dining table. The master suite has three skylights as well as a foldout balcony. The yacht’s staterooms can accommodate 12 guests.

Custom Line Navetta 42 yacht

Custom Line Navetta 42

Back in the day—as recently as just five years ago—the naveta-style boat was the closest thing the Italians made to an American trawler, with a seaworthy displacement hull, a no-frills interior, and not much in the way of exterior social space. It was the type of vessel on which roughing it was considered a virtue and modern conveniences like, say, a Jacuzzi were for wimps.

Over the last three years, the designers of Ferretti’s  Custom Line  broke the naveta concept into small pieces and redesigned it for the modern superyacht world. The company’s reinterpretation means the naveta is no longer Italy’s equivalent of a slow boat to China, but a handsome, comfortable, and efficient design that is attracting owners of other types of motor yachts.

The 138-foot yacht is the largest semi-displacement hull that Custom Line has built, with a top-end speed of 22 knots and a transatlantic range of 3,000 nautical miles at its friendly cruise speed.

But that’s just the start. The 42 has a huge social island on the exterior foredeck with a settee, table, and four-person sunbed. On the flybridge is a small Jacuzzi forward, loungers, and a helm station under the hardtop as well as an open area at the stern with space for loose furniture—perfect for savoring the view. The cockpit just below has a similar layout, with an outside dining table for eight. The lower area of the stern features a tender garage with a new launch-and-retrieval system and transom space for a beach club.

The interior is also ultramodern. The main deck has a long saloon that includes sofas at the rear and a formal dining area forward, plus a full-beam master suite with a patio on one side and a desk along the other bulkhead. On the lower deck, four double guest suites, all with large windows, are equal in size and positioned for maximum room to move around the double bed. An owner can also opt for a five-stateroom layout.

Conrad C133 Viatoris

Arguably the hottest studio in superyacht design, UK-based Reymond Langton was behind the contemporary but elegant look of the new  Viatoris , the 133-footer from Conrad shipyard. The designers did away with the usual stacked wedding-cake look and instead introduced curves to the rear of the upper decks that lend an air of individuality to its blue-and-white profile while also providing an exceptional view for the owners and guests. Besides the unusually ornate interior, the 133 differs from other yachts in its class with the four balconies that open outward on the main deck (two in the master suite and two in the aft saloon) that give an open-air feel to these areas. The owner uses  Viatoris  as a home on the water rather than a weekend retreat, which explains the full-beam master suite, generous social spaces on the bridge and sundecks, and custom interior.

Princess Bandazul

The semi-custom 131-foot Bandazul by Princess Yachts has a number of custom modifications from the UK builder’s in-house design team. The owner opted for a combination of light stone, soft fabrics, and glossed wenge joinery. The yacht’s extended saloon joins an open sundeck. The seating on the foredeck is also expansive with a table and seats, and there’s another large area in the cockpit. The owner wanted four larger suites, rather than the traditional five-stateroom layout, so there’s a large VIP stateroom belowdecks. Bandazul is powered by twin 1,920 hp MTU diesels for a maximum speed of 22 knots.

The fully custom 131-foot Stella di Mare from CBI Navi is a long-range expedition yacht designed by Sergio Cutolo of HydroTec. The exterior design has multiple social spaces, including a flybridge with 915 square feet of open deck, a large upper foredeck, and a main-deck cockpit measuring 800 square feet. The interior by Fossati Design Bureau includes an expansive saloon with a formal dining area as well as five staterooms, with the owner’s suite situated on the main deck. The yacht is powered by twin 1,000 hp Caterpillar C32 diesels, which delivers a maximum speed of 14 knots. Stella di Mare has a range of 6,900 nautical miles at 10.5 knots.

Sunseeker 131 Zozo

Sunseeker 131 Zozo

The first in Sunseeker’s new 131 Yacht line, Zozo launched last year. The beauty about the 131-foot tri-deck Sunseeker model is that no two will look alike. Sunseeker’s customization service not only personalizes the interior decor but also the internal configurations. The standard layout is for 10 guests in five cabins, though an owner can choose to increase or decrease the number of staterooms.

Building on the success of the Sunseeker 130, the 131 features improvements such as an extended skydeck and upper aft deck, allowing for a larger bar and more seating, as well as a hot tub on the skydeck. A deck below, the flydeck features a dining table for 10 that adjoins the upper saloon. On the main deck, the open-plan saloon has a large social area with sofas and a formal dining table. And the palatial main-deck master includes a large bedroom, separate desk and lounge areas, and a full-beam bathroom forward, with his-and-her sinks, a shower, a toilet/bidet, and even a bathtub.

The garage accommodates a 20-foot tender and two jet skis. Zozo hits a top speed of 25 knots— fast for a superyacht—and cruises at 10 knots to provide a 1,500-mile range.

Monaco Yacht Club: An Exclusive Oasis For Marine Lovers

10 stories about the districts of Monaco

Looking down on the Yacht Club from Monaco’s exclusive seawater Spa, “ Thermes Marins ”, the new club-house really is a magnificent icon of multi-decked architecture – inaugurated in 2014 and designed by internationally renowned architect Lord Norman Foster.

Only in the Principality’s marina could you confuse this giant structure for the yachts around it that it resembles – a yacht mirage with a gorgeous deck with luxurious swimming pool and terraces for dancing. Splendid enough for meetings of the most discerning yacht enthusiasts, including the glitterati and “Three Comma” billionaires that frequent it.

Yachts Beyond the Reach of Mere Mortals

Some of the largest and most expensive yachts in the world dock here to take in the city’s pleasures, particularly during the iconic Monaco Yacht Show. You can wander around marvelling at all of the gadgets designers can inlay on these boats like the 348-foot-long AMADEA one of the largest and most distinctive superyachts in the world with its six distinctive guest decks. Or perhaps gaze at the 365-foot-long TIS, one of the largest and most regal yachts to be launched this year.

These superyachts, like the Yacht Club itself are like private islands and wouldn’t look out of place in a James Bond movie. If billionaires Bernard Arnault or Larry Page or Larry Ellison come calling, Monaco Yacht Club sets the stage perfectly.

Home of the Grimaldi Dynasty

For over 600 years from the 12th century onwards, the Grimaldi stronghold at Port Hercule, including where the Yacht Club now preens itself, was one of the prized naval assets on the Mediterranean. Its strategic location served more than once to change the course of history.

It was around the time of the reign of Charles III of Monaco that the Principality’s reputation as an international haven of luxury and wealth took off. And Charles III had the vision to encourage the development of Monaco as a magnet for international regattas of renown to which the world flocked.

Historic Regatta Heaven

The first of these regattas were held in the bay of Monaco in 1862, so successful that in 1888 the “Société des Régates” was established by Prince Charles III and his son Prince Albert I , affectionately known as the “Oceanographer Prince”.

Almost a century of famous regattas preceded the founding in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by Prince Albert II since 1984, the Yacht Club de Monaco. The Club brings together more than 2000 members from 66 nationalities. Many of the world’s most prestigious private yachts fly the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee, testimony to its unique position in the International yachting world.

Prince Albert’s Presidency

In April 1984, with Prince Albert’s Presidency, he developed new international events such as the Primo Cup, the biggest gathering of monotype yachts in the Mediterranean Sea. Prince Albert also put emphasis on classic Yachting with the organization from 1994 of the Monaco Classic Week for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts.

Notably, it was the first visit of Atlantic 2010 (replica of the 1903 three-mast schooner on which Charlie Barr in 1905 set the best time for an Atlantic crossing) to the Principality. Another icon, the SS Delphine (1921) steam-boat made a welcome return. It was aboard this beauty that three world leaders, Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill, negotiated at least part of the 1945 Yalta Agreement.

Yacht Seasons are typically opened with ultra-private concerts at YCM with celebrities like Sir Elton John in 2016, Duran Duran in 2017, and Sting last year. It was yet another global star Lionel Richie singing “All Night Long” this September who delighted the many boat owners and YCM members. “All Night Long” was attended by YCM President, Prince Albert II and a host of international personalities including actor-producer Samuel L. Jackson, basketball legend Magic Johnson, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and fashion designer Domenico Dolce, one of the two behind the eponymous brand D&G.

Regatta and Sports Heaven with a Golden Future

The Monaco Yacht Club from its beginnings embraced and has nurtured a prestige Regatta program that has accelerated and taken on new dimensions under Prince Albert’s Presidency.

It is worth mentioning the Primo Cup again as it has quickly established itself as the big meeting that opens the season in the Mediterranean for Europe’s one-design elite. Just a few other examples of stand-out Regattas enjoyed by YCMmembers include:

Monaco Swan One Design,  (9th-13th April 2019) organized in conjunction with the Yacht Club de Monaco,  was the first event in the 2019 Nations Trophy Mediterranean League.

Monaco Globe Week with the IMOCA 60  – 60-foot monohulls being among the fastest modern racing monohulls have raced on a course totalling 1,300 nautical miles embracing some of the most emblematic marks in the Western Mediterranean.

Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series  offers a monthly programme alternating high level regattas and training weekends for onedesigns.

As well as the Primo Cup another innovation worth a double mention here is  Monaco Classic Week. Persuaded that the reading of the past holds keys for the future Prince Albert fostered the creation and coordination during five years of a unique circuit for vintage and classic yachts, the Prada Challenge for Classic Yachts, without forgetting the acquisition of Tuiga in 1995, since becoming the flagship of the YCM. More recently the wave continued with the launching in 2005 of the “La Belle Classe” label.

The whole yachting world continues to look to Monaco to organize its most prestigious events. Within the last 12 months, 200 guests from the America’s Cup community from around the world gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco to celebrate the launch of  the Prada Cup – the Challenger Selection Series for the 36th America’s Cup  to be presented by Prada in January 2021 in Auckland – deemed as “ the quest for oldest trophy in sport ”, the America’s Cup. Not to forget  World Rowing with the  Prince Albert II Challenge , a 6000m coastal race organised by the Societe Nautique de Monaco.

The Enthusiasm and Promise of Monaco’s Youth at YCM

Looking to the future is the Monaco Sports Academy which provides support to gifted young Monaco sailors and sportsmen taking on the world. The Academy is a close collaboration between the Yacht Club de Monaco, presided by Prince Albert and its General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri, and Philippe Ghanem who is an active member of the Club. They share a common goal: to help young athletes living in Monaco reach the highest level in sport.

Also founded in 1970 by Prince Rainier III, the Sports Section of Y.C.M. adapts training to youngsters from as young as age six from initiation to competition and at every age.

Look out for the Monaco Optimist Team Race from 9-12 January 2020. The regatta is reserved for 20 teams of young sailors, all under 14. YCM invites the most competitive clubs with emphasis on tactics and above all team-work.

Full of youthful energy and promise is  the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge  next held on 30 June-4 July 2020. The Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation organises the Solar & Energy Boat Challenge which is unique in the world.

How to become a new member of the Yacht Club

Anyone wishing to become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco needs to be introduced by two “sponsors” from YCM. The sponsor’s letter of introduction will explain the applicant’s motives for joining the Club. Prince Albert, President of the Yacht Club, presides over the meetings of the admissions’ committee. The role of the sponsor is essential. The latter, must integrate him into the life of the Yacht Club, accompany him, present him to the other members but also involve him in organized events, whether they be social or sports.

The sponsor also undertakes to ensure that his “protégé” embraces the YCM’s philosophy and values, will actively engage in the Club’s life and keep its reputation at the pinnacle.

A Regal Club and Natural Host of Prestigious Events

The Yacht club reaches well beyond being a club for owners of yachts and superyachts. It is actually an immense infrastructure akin to a multi-tiered island that organises not only events connected to the yachts and regattas but also all kind of sports and social events, dances and entertainment. High society balls, conferences, exclusive business gatherings and prestigious auctions are just part of the kaleidoscope of activity.

The members of the club and their guests have at their disposition restaurants with Michelin Star chefs (including the exclusive 1909) gyms and a library – and a spa-zone, not to mention the gorgeous pool and terraces overlooking the azure bay. There is a truly great bar, a hive of social contact, with an international reputation and winner of awards for its unique cocktails and the skills of its bar staff. Endless discovery is to be found in each private niche of this island-club.

6 future superyacht trends

yachting world monaco

Article written by BOAT International Published on September 3, 2024

Advanced technology, innovative design concepts and a growing emphasis on sustainability are just some of the ways in which superyachts are continuing to evolve, and staying ahead of these emerging trends is crucial for designers, builders and enthusiasts alike. Looking at some of today’s stand-out features, we offer a glimpse into what could define the next generation of superyachts.

Responsive design As technology expands and develops, there is a growing trend for designers looking to intertwine art with technology. Responsive design, also known as immersive art, has been a big talking point in the industry recently.

A major project which caught attention back in 2020 was 107.2-metre Luminosity’s 370-square-metre interactive LED walls, designed by Zaniz Studio. Since then, responsive design has become ever more popular on board, with Perini Navi’s 46.5-metre ArtExplorer showcasing a 16-metre cinematic tunnel whose walls are wrapped in LED light installations.

Currently, responsive design plays with movement and light but in the future, we might see the trend encompass touch, smell and temperature.

Nature takeover We’re already seeing a shift towards yacht designs that champion an improved connection to the water – like the open aft deck on the Benetti Oasis models or the underwater viewing lounges on board 83.5-metre Savannah and 75-metre M’Brace.

The next phase may see greenery make more of an appearance on board. A recent nature-focused project that stole the spotlight was Heesen’s 67-metre Sparta, its three decks symbolising the elements of water, earth and air.

Interior restyling During and after the pandemic, we saw a significant spike in yacht usage among both owners and charterers, with some spending weeks at a time at sea.

Based on this, we might expect to see people readjust their attitude toward their yachts by focusing less on wow factor and more on comfort and liveability. Instead of grand pianos, elaborate dining saloons and disused Jacuzzis, owners may opt for additional offices, larger gym areas or cosy media rooms.

Central to this ethos is Nuvolari Lenard’s 202-metre Centerfold concept, a design that evokes feeling, according to the studio, rather than purely aesthetics. Interior styling is also shifting towards neutral tones and comfortable furnishings as opposed to cool, contemporary themes designed for dazzling, rather than living.

The power of artificial intelligence It’s no doubt that AI is beginning to weave its way into many industries, and this is no different in the world of yacht design.

Over the past year, we have seen various shipyards and designers embrace AI in order to enhance the guest experience on board. Azimut was one of the first with the installation of smart home automation on board the Magellano 60.

More recently, Rossinavi harnessed the power of AI to maximise environmental efficiency on board the 43-metre hybrid-electric Seawolf X. Whilst AI is still in its infancy, the industry has so far proven that the technology can be useful in numerous ways on board, and we can expect this evolve rapidly in the coming years.

Explorer-style amenities Alongside strong demand for explorer yachts we’ve also seen an uptick in trend for explorer-style features, even on regular superyachts.

Holterman’s 32.6-metre Lady Fleur is a good example of this, incorporating a hydraulic aft platform that doubles as a tender bay and swimming pool. Warming firepits, larger toy lockers and toy-carrying aft decks are becoming more commonplace, with Wider’s 49.9-metre Stern able to house a submersible.

In keeping with that theme, yachts may start to get more rugged and functional in appearance – something that’s highlighted by the booming in the popularity of conversion superyachts.

Glass galore The use of glass has grown in the past few years, with more designers beginning to use it for aesthetic purposes as well as functional ones.

We’ve also seen it become more frequently used for structural purposes too, as the material becomes more durable and easier to work with.

From Feadship’s 77.2-metre Pi’s glass-clad saloon to Oceanco’s 90-metre Dar’s glossy glass exterior, it’s making a big appearance on the exterior. In the future, we may start to see glass introduced more heavily on the interior as well.

The International contenders hoping to make their mark in the 2024 Vendée Globe

Yachting World

  • September 17, 2024

Is French dominance in the IMOCA 60 class about to be challenged? Andi Robertson and Helen Fretter report on the latest international contenders

yachting world monaco

The Vendée Globe is one of the most quintessentially French sporting phenomena. Fans who make the four-yearly pilgrimage to Les Sables d’Olonne – rising long before dawn to secure their spot on the town’s Atlantic-swept sea walls so they may wave their heroes off at the start – are probably only rivalled in passion by the obsessive Tour de France followers who spend summers camping roadside on mountain passes.

A whole infrastructure is built in France around the Vendée race and the IMOCA class. In Lorient and Les Sables armies of specialists handle the complex rigging, electronics and sails maintenance needs. There are the famed training camps out of Port-la-Forêt, where the best sailors in the world push each other harder and harder in the hunt for marginal gains.

For many it’s near impossible to break into this world without becoming a ‘French’ team ( Alex Thomson and Mike Golding being rare exceptions who were based out of the UK). However, the current crop of IMOCA 60 skippers includes a good proportion of international skippers, many based in France – though not all. And this summer’s back-to-back transatlantic races have seen some of these skippers come to the fore.

May’s westbound Transat CIC, swiftly followed by the return New York Vendée Les Sables d’Olonne finishing in June, presented a dilemma for some teams: if qualifying miles were needed, the races had to be completed – perhaps more cautiously than usual. For some the schedule was too punishing, or the time and budget demands too arduous at this stage. Sam Goodchild and Pip Hare were among the skippers who opted to deliver their boat to New York instead.

For others the races represented an opportunity to truly test their boats and themselves in one last ‘big race’ scenario, albeit the North Atlantic in early summer offered very different conditions compared to what skippers can expect on this November’s Vendée Globe course.

Boris Herrmann

After a career best 2nd place on the outbound Transat CIC, finishing just 2h 19m behind winner Yoann Richomme, Germany’s Boris Herrmann ( Malizia SeaExplorer ) scored another 2nd place on the return New York Vendée Les Sables d’Olonne race.

Herrmann took an extreme northerly option, climbing over the dominant high pressure system to benefit from fast downwind conditions – at one point he was over 700 miles north-west of eventual winner Charlie Dalin and 1,100 miles away from the main peloton of top boats, which passed south of the Azores. The careful gamble at one stage looked like it might reward Herrmann with his first major solo race win.

Herrmann, who bases his campaign out of Monaco, has done much to raise the profile of offshore racing in Germany, following his 5th place in the 2020 Vendée. The Ocean Race , in which he finished third, also won many fans. But despite those successes, and his notably different IMOCA design, Herrmann has a reputation for perhaps being a little conservative. With two 2nd places under his belt, is he now going to be challenging for the front of the Vendée fleet?

yachting world monaco

‘I’d expect to be starting full throttle. I think now my boat is indestructible’. Photo: Jean-Louis Carli/Alea

“I think it may make me a bit more confident,” Herrmann agrees. “I’d expect to be starting full throttle, but with a little bit of expectation to stay or to reclaim a good position wherever possible.

“I may also be more likely to be more in race-mode as sometimes I’m a little on my own planet and doing my own thing!”

After 29,000 miles he has high confidence in Malizia-SeaExplorer. “I think now my boat is indestructible – we have half a tonne more carbon than some other people.

“A strength of my boat is when it’s very irregular and unstable, because it is more tolerant [of those conditions]. Its particular strength is probably downwind in sea state, I have the best boat in the fleet for that. Obviously you pay for that when it’s upwind in medium conditions.

“In the light I’m quite good, but in everything pre-foiling – when some of the Verdier designs might just pop on the foil – then we struggle a bit. I need 1-2 knots more.”

To be at the front of the fleet brings its own intensity. “[The New York race] was a very unusual, extreme situation. It’s unlikely we’d ever have such a big split in the Vendée. Quite often it’s more about small optimisations of basically the same trajectory with some boats around you.

Forty solo skippers taking part in the Vendée Globe race 2024

IMOCA teams have been anxiously counting the qualification miles for this year’s around the world race after 44 skippers initially…

yachting world monaco

Two new IMOCA skippers who will be fighting at the front of the next Vendée Globe

One year before the 2024 Vendée Globe, two back to back transatlantic races – the classic double-handed Transat Jacques Vabre…

“That is normally quite relaxing for me, as long as I have other people around. In the Transat CIC I had Sam Davies on the AIS all the way until the finish. That was super relaxing, I could lie on my bunk and have a big percentage number [displayed] and see how much distance I was gaining or losing. It’s a bit like having a pacemaker.”

Managing stress is a huge element of the Vendée Globe. What does Herrmann find most challenging? “My main focus now is on recovering better after having gone through stressful situations. For example, during the last Vendée I had the stress of needing to climb the mast with a fear of heights. And I needed to look for Kevin [Escoffier, four skippers were diverted to assist in a search and rescue]. And those situations I remember for days, it took me a while [to get over them].

“This could be quicker if I pay more attention to telling my subconscious ‘it’s fine, it’s all good, don’t worry’. That’s what I mainly want to learn, the attitude of not worrying so much, as I always worry too much about everything.”

The New York to Les Sables race was also a career best for British-based Pip Hare , who finished ninth.

The real success story for Hare and her team is how closely she and Medallia were matching some of the front-runners in the fleet for speed – at times racing within range of Goodchild and Thomas Ruyant , alongside Justine Mettreaux on Teamwork, Sam Davies, and Yoann Richomme on Arkea Paprec. “I am so, so pleased as it is next level for me and the boat. And it is a validation that as a team we really needed,” she said after finishing.

“I have learned a lot about my comparative speed. I have always said it is difficult to be the lone team in the UK. We are very much in isolation. I have learned now about my pace compared to different generations of boat and I have been impressed with Medallia’s performance. It has some holes – as you would expect from a 2016 generation boat – but I was impressed in the conditions that it can hold its own.

“And I just love sailing this boat, I flipping love it!

“I hope this sets the bar high and I won’t go back – that comes with a certain pressure. I have always aspired to be in the top 10. But you can’t click your fingers and get there. It’s a hard, hard journey.”

British skipper Sam Davies has long been part of the French IMOCA world, but she’s also long established as one of the top international skippers, finishing fourth on her debut Vendée with Roxy in 2008. She was dismasted in 2012 (on Savéol), then had to retire in 2020 after her previous Initiatives Coeur hit an underwater object. But for 2024 she has her first custom-designed IMOCA, a 2022 Manuard design.

The joy Davies still finds in solo sailing, 21 years after her first Figaro, is evident. In all her videos from this summer’s transats Davies seemed to be perpetually smiling, a grin which was at its widest on the dock in Brooklyn where she sprayed champagne over her team to celebrate a hard won third place in the Transat CIC. That result – Davies’ best ever IMOCA in the foiling era – was backed up by a strong sixth on the return race.

She and Initiatives Coeur were clearly flourishing at the pace being set by Jérémie Beyou , Justine Mettraux, Thomas Ruyant, and Yoann Richomme. All might be considered Vendée Globe podium contenders – as Davies also clearly now is.

“It was so important for the Vendée Globe to have done those races and to get good results in both of them is a big confidence builder,” Davies says. “For me it was important for the testing factor because I still judge my boat as quite new.

“Last year we just got it up and running so it was really important for me to ‘send it’ across the Atlantic and really push both ways. Now I know I can send it in the middle of the Southern Ocean when there is no shelter nearby.

“This has proven that I’m capable of sailing my boat to its potential. These boats are so powerful and can be violent and a handful to live on – and to keep pushing over a prolonged period of time. So now I feel I’m at the same level as my boat, but I also learned, ‘Whoah, I am in the match!’ I’m up there with the front group and that’s what I, and my team, have always wanted. Those are our ambitions. We want to be in that lead peloton. I’ve proven to myself I can do that, and that it’s really good fun. That makes me want to do that more.

“Maybe there is that little bit of extra pressure now as I have proven I can be on the podium once. But I have done the best things I could have leading into the Vendée Globe, and there is nothing better than being up there among the ‘favourites’ because for the project it keeps us up at the front in the pre-race build up.

“We have a bit to do to refit and reinforce the boat this summer but there are no performance changes. That’s nice to know. I have all the sheets marked and my little ‘bible’ of how to sail this boat is pretty good now.

“I have some new sails. For my sail choices the fact I did the Southern Ocean leg with Biotherm was a big help. You easily forget what it’s like in the Southern Ocean and what it’s like there on your own, and what a huge percentage of the Vendée Globe that is. [That was] one of the big gains to having done that and lived in such an extreme way with the issues we had.

“I am on top of the miles table – that in itself is reassuring, to know I could not have done more in preparation. Some people see it as wearing the boat out or it being too tiring but it’s really important to have done the training. Now I’m in such a good place.”

Sam Goodchild

Sam Goodchild marked his card early on as a likely Vendée Globe podium contender going into his first attempt – though the modest British sailor is unlikely to say as much.

After spending much of his childhood in the Caribbean on his family’s cruising yacht, Goodchild returned to the UK for school and went through the Artemis Academy in Cowes before moving to France. After impressive results in the Figaro, Class 40 and Ocean Multi 50, he signed his first IMOCA deal in early 2023.

His Vendée campaign hit the ground running with a string of thirds in the double-handed Guyader Bermudes 1000, Rolex Fastnet, Défi Azimut and Transat Jacques Vabre in 2023, before also taking third in his first ever solo IMOCA race, last year’s Retour à La Base.

He elected not to do the outbound Transat CIC this spring, but to focus instead on the New York-Les Sables as the race likely to be more representative of Vendée Globe conditions. But while lying fourth with 1,100 miles to the finish line, Goodchild‘s IMOCA Vulnerable lost its mast. He sailed under jury rig to the Azores, before the IMOCA was repatriated to Lorient under tow.

He is determined the accident won’t compromise his build up to his first Vendée Globe. “We planned to put the boat in for a summer refit, so in theory we might lose no time at all. The refit is just a post-race check – screw everything on a bit tighter and add some more knots to things, make sure we don’t take any risks!

“We can reassure ourselves that the boat’s done eight years and we are going to put a rig on it that is better than the rig which was put on originally – and trust that the 100,000 miles before it broke all went fine. You definitely wouldn’t choose to be in this situation five months out of the Vendée Globe, but you make the best of the scenario.”

Discovering hidden ports in the West Mediterranean

Published 17 September 2024

Monaco, Saint-Tropez, Palma, Porto  Cervo  – these are all failsafe ports-of-call for summer  yacht  cruising. But if you want to skip the crowds,  it’s  worth  cruising away from the well beaten path and exploring some of the more  secluded coves and historic  harbours  that  also  dot the  Western Mediterranean  coastline. From volcanic Italian outcrops to  secluded  Maltese  coves , here are  six  alternative  yacht destinations  worth knowing about.

Why seek out the West Mediterranean’s hidden ports?

The port-of-call  you choose   can significantly impact  your  overall cruising experience –  and  whether you crave  tranquillity  or simply seek a safe haven  away from the crowds of tourists , berthing or taking the tender  in to an alternative, lesser-known marina offers  a convenient  way to access the  lesser known  shoreside offerings. And,  with more options available  for eating and drinking  t han  you might have  in  the usual hot spots,  you can relax. After all,  relaxation is  what yachting is all about .

Mgarr Marina, Gozo

Gozo, Malta

As an established superyacht hub in the Mediterranean,  Malta  is an ideal gateway to the  southern  Mediterranean’s most popular cruising grounds, but for those looking to explore Malta  herself  and her sister islands of  Gozo  and Comino, there  are  plenty  of attractions  located  more locally  around the archipelago . 300-plus days of sunshine  per year , deep natural harbours, picturesque fishing villages and secluded bays are all a given, while ashore the  islands offer three UNESCO sites, Michelin-star restaurants, and extensive superyacht facilities.

Cruising around the island of Malta, for example, from Marsaxlokk to Golden Bay and  Gnejna  in the south, to  Mellieha ,  Selmum  and St Paul’s Bay in the north, and you will find  genuinely  beautiful anchoring spots  all around the island . The UNESCO World Heritage city of  the Maltese capital  Valletta is home to the island’s main marina, Marina Di Valletta, but for those looking for an alternative  to Valletta   then  Gozo’s   Mgarr  Marina  still  offers berths for superyachts of up to 85m (278ft) in length  and can provide visiting yachts   with an  ideal launchpad for exploring the rugged island which is  also  home to some of the best dive sites in the Mediterranean.

Porto Cristo,  Mallorca

Mallorca port

The  golden  Spanish isles of the Balearics have evolved to be among the Mediterranean’s most glamorous cruising grounds, attracting the yachting crowd to enjoy the long hours of sunshine and world-class hip hangouts. The most popular island of  Mallorca  is busy year-round, but even during the peak summer months you can  still  find secluded coves and pretty bays, including the picturesque fishing village of Porto Cristo. Located to the east of the island, it takes advantage of its position at the end of a sheltered bay and is blessed with clear waters that lap the blue flag ged  sandy beach. The port itself houses the famous Caves of  Drach , family-run restaurants and a Yacht Club, however the berths are too small for superyachts but  a great place  to tender ashore .

Vernazza Harbour, Cinque Terre, Italy

Panoramic view of colorful Vernazza village in Cinque Terre

The Italian Riviera is best known for its dramatic cliffs and charming seaside towns, including the tiny horseshoe bay of Portofino, but further along this vertiginous coastline the Cinque Terre (five lands) offers the waterborne a string of five little fishing villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

The entire Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage site and protected marine area, and boasts footpaths that take walkers through tiny settlements, churches and old castles. Anchor in Vernazza Harbour, the area's only natural harbour, and tender ashore to dine on fresh seafood at one of the alfresco restaurants facing the water’s edge.

Sète Marina, France

Pont du Gard

With its well-connected waterways and easy access to the popular cruising grounds of the Mediterannean and beyond, Sète is located halfway between Barcelona and the French Riviera. A convenient stopover to and from the Côte d’Azur for yachts cruising from mainland Spain or the Balearics, the town is a cultural haven offering local art galleries and museums, and is also well-known for its gastronomic scene.

The surrounding area is home to fine sandy beaches, national parks and ancient Roman attractions such as Pont du Gard. The marina itself offers berthing for yachts of up to 180m (590ft) in length, with provisioning and service facilities and a clubhouse for yachts and their crew.

Port Grimaud, France

For those looking to enjoy the infectious joie de vivre of Saint-Tropez and the golden stretch of Pampelonne Beach without having to battle with the traffic jams of yachts in the Port of Saint-Tropez, then nearby Port Grimaud is ideally located. Tucked into the opposite corner of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the port has a relaxed, provençal atmosphere with its pastel coloured fishermen’s houses, church square, and plethora of restaurants and cafes. Catering for smaller yachts, this might be one to tender ashore to if your yacht is over 24m (78ft) in length.

Porto Olbia, Sardinia

Porto Cervo Sardinia

One of Italy’s most glamorous places to spend the summer, the coastline of Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda is where you will find exclusive restaurants, stunning beaches and a wide variety of landscapes. In high season, the long favoured Porto Cervo is both beautiful and very crowded, and finding a berth can be difficult. The nearby resort harbour of Porto Rotondo is just 20 minutes cruise away and offers an alternative location to berth or anchor.

Surrounded by charming bays, the crescent bay is home to beautiful beaches and an exclusive (and very sheltered) marina with high-end facilities for yachts of up to 75m (246ft) in length. Spend time beachside or explore the small fishing village with its boutiques and contemporary art galleries. Early evening is the best time to stroll around the stylish port with its trendy bars and restaurants and small piazzas.

Events in the West Mediterranean

From tennis championships to polo, the  iconic   Monaco Grand Prix and  a variety of  yachting regattas, the West Mediterranean plays host to all manner of major sporting events. It's also where you will find the Hollywood elite gracing the shores of Cannes  at the  world  famous  Cannes Film  Festival, or  wearing their most glamorous gowns  and tuxedos  to  attend  the Red Cross Ball in Monaco. Some events are even  held  portside, allowing you to view the action from the comfort of the decks of your yacht.

Palma International Boat Show

Palma International Boat Show

The in augu ral show of the Mediterranean cruising season, the  Palma International Boat Show  is hosted on the pretty island of Mallorca. The perfect place to view the latest  cutting-edge  water toys and  a variety of  superyachts, the latter of which can be viewed at the Palma Superyacht Village, the show is  located  right by the island’s capital with all its restaurants and bars, and historic city centre.  Sailing yachts are a particular speciality of this yacht show.

Monaco Rose Ball

Opening Monaco’s ‘season’ every year in the spring, the Rose Ball is the most glamorous invite on the  P rincipality’s social calendar. Hosted by the Monegasque royal family since 1954, this annual high-society charity gala draws  on  an impressive guest list that includes both royals and A-list celebrities.

Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Monaco

Tennis

The annual  Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters  is a small tournament which  welcomes world class players to compete in the first clay court tournament of the year , and is used by many players as a  warm up  for the French Open . Hosted each spring, the event is one of the oldest and most prestigious on the circuit, welcoming the biggest names from international tennis to play at the  Monte Carlo Country Club.

Unlike the Grand Slam tournaments where the crowds are huge  and the players kept very separate from the fans ,  at Monte Carlo  the biggest names in the world of tennis will  literally walk  past you on their way to the courts from the changing rooms. For tennis fans this makes it an unmissable event, with the opportunity to see  even  the top 10 international male players close-up as they compete for the ATP World Tour Title –  previous  players have included legendary names including Sampras, Agassi,  Federer  and Nadal.

Even if you are not particularly a tennis fan, it's  still  worth stepping ashore just to enjoy the charged atmosphere on the courts that heats up over the nine days of play.

Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival

The star of the Côte d’Azur, Cannes welcomes the world’s premier film festival to its shores each Spring along with the biggest stars in the film world. Created to draw attention and raise the profile of  competing  films, the  Cannes Film Festival  promotes and rewards the  world’s  most  cutting-edge  films throughout the 12-day festival.  While the main screenings are open only to accredited film professionals, directors, actors, and producers, public beach screenings are also held  for the  general public  every night  on the beach. The hottest invites are, of course, to the parties on board the most exclusive superyachts either berthed in the Old Port or anchored out in the bay.

Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez

One of the largest gatherings of classic and modern sailing yachts worldwide,  Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez  sees a legendary fleet of awe-inspiring classics and a fleet of modern sailing yachts enjoy racing and fun in the Bay of Saint-Tropez.  The sight of hundreds of modern and classic sails filling up the bay is genuinely spectacular and the atmosphere in port is also truly incredible – certainly one not to be missed by any yachting afficionado , and  a great experience  for anyone .
