The Andrews 70 “Trader”  is a proven blue water racing boat with a known pedigree. The boat most recently completed TRANSPACs in 2019 and 2023.  “TRADER” has been maintained to a consistently high standard. Recent upgrades include new standing rigging, chain plates, halyards and running rigging (2019). New Precision 93% furling and 97% racing furling Jib, four New Precision Asymmetrical Spinnakers (A1.A2,A3,and A4) March 2023, New Precision Main (2021) and a newer Doyle Main (2016). Even the galley has been updated with a Force 10 three burner stove 2023, New pressurized water system (2021) and a Fridgomatic 35 fridge and 50 freezer (2017) 

She met compliance with all US Sailing Offshore Safety Equipment Requirements (SERs) for TRANSPAC in 2023 and in 2019. She is also regularly raced and sailed in Hawaii, and is ready for a trip back to the mainland and would make a great TRANSPAC or PACIFIC CUP boat. For the right buyer her owner is willing to impart the knowledge and experience he has gained from two successful TRANSPAC campaigns- These boats do not come with instruction manuals.

The flybridge is large enough to host a U-shaped dining sofa that surrounds a fiberglass breakfast table, a wet-bar console, an outdoor barbecue grill and a pair of upper helm seats. There is also room to the rear of the flybridge for tender storage with a crane, capable of holding a jet-ski and a dinghy. One level down and you will find a teak-lined aft deck hosting an outdoor dining table and side seats that includes a cutaway transom for ladder access down to a hydraulic bathing platform with a metal grill surface. Out on the foredeck there is a double sunpad, ideal for hours spent sunbathing in the summer months.

Access to the air-conditioned, main-deck cockpit is through rear sliding glass doors with bulky and durable stainless-steel frames. Here you will discover an aft salon with glossy cherrywood surrounds, lavish cream carpeting and panoramic side windows. There is an L-shaped sofa in white Italian leather, a teak coffee table, plenty of cabinetry, recessed lighting and an angled U-shaped dining sofa surrounding a dining table with room for up to 8 guests. Also, to be found on this level is a walk-in bar with granite worktops and all the refrigeration and ice-making facilities required to rustle up a pre-meal Martini. At the front of the cockpit sits an enclosed pilothouse for dedicated steering free from distraction, as well as a private galley with an electric hob, a convection oven, granite worktops, a microwave and a dishwasher.

The lower level on the Azimut 71 was designed to be well ahead of its time, featuring four en suite staterooms including a pair of twins with Pullman beds, a large double bedroom and a full-beam master stateroom amidship. Downstairs space benefits from plenty of oblong-shaped opening portholes running along the sides of the hull for ample natural light, as well as lightly toned interior treatment featuring cream upholstery, marble surrounds and bespoke, curved cabinetry.

A wide-beamed deep-V hull with prop tunnels is robust and slippery on the water, while a pair of 900MHP MAN D2842 diesel engines power the Azimut 71 to top speeds of around 25 knots. At lower cruising speeds, however, the yacht has an enviable range of 470 miles thanks to a fuel tank that holds 5000 liters of diesel. Stern and bow thrusters offer increased agility on the turn when riding this yacht, while the use of a Furuno radar package and Robertson Autopilot ensure confident navigation.

General description :

The Y7 is Y Yachts best selling model of this contemporary range of performance carbon constructed superyachts (70-100ft). Y Yachts are a luxury technologically advanced brand which was founded by the highly respected Michael Schmidt (formerly founder and owner of Hanse yachts, Germany).

This flush decked sleek hull is powered by an Axxon high modulus carbon mast, carbon furling boom, high performance Doyle sails and a performance Weldox keel. It is no wonder this fast cruising yacht targets the sailing enthusiast who prefers no compromise performance combined with the very best equipment yet simplicity with luxury. Despite being 22m (70ft) in length and with a 212 SqM square top mainsail and 296 SqM Code Zero, the Y7 is very much conceived to be simply operated by the owners. All control lines lead aft to the twin helm stations where the helm can simply sail the yacht by themselves thanks to push button Harken winches. Wide open deck spaces are plentiful on the Y7 and her large lounging cockpit is ideal for al-fresco dining or just for hanging out under the boom bimini. For the owner who would appreciates crewed help onboard there is a dedicated crew cabin with its own private aft deck access. Michael Schmidt is a firm believer in simplicity and ‘no-fuss’ systems that work. As a consequence the Y7’s deck design and sailing systems could not be easier to operate.

Below decks the stylised open plan accommodation is beautifully fitted out with Natural Oak furniture, Oak sole boards and bulkheads. Where possible all furniture and bulkheads are of lightweight foam composite construction. Its no wonder at 30t (lightship) she is fast and rewarding to sail. This Y7 has the most popular three cabin layout plus twin crew cabin. Forward of the large full beam saloon is a U shaped galley to starboard (fully equipped with professional Miele equipment & Grohe Blue Tap) and to port an owners desk/mini office. Forward of the mast is the forward facing master cabin with central king sized bed and ensuite bathroom. Aft of the saloon is the Navigation station with desk and all ships central controls. Either side of the companionway are two twin berthed guest cabins – the starboard cabin having an infill option to create a large double bed. Each aft guest cabin has its own bathroom with shower, basin and electric WC.

There are two large storage lockers onboard. Most impressive of all is the aft deck lazarette which has a 3.2 x 1.8m hydraulic opening deck hatch. This full beam locker is entirely separate from the transom and therefore remains completely dry. The 71’ Jim Smith “Fish On” is a custom sportfish yacht that seamlessly blends intricate beauty and design with power – a well-established standard of Jim Smith Tournament Boats.

As a young man, Jim Smith’s interest led him to discover a number of passions including barnstorming biplanes, motorcycle racing, and eventually outboard race boats. After twenty years of building and racing hydroplanes, Smith moved to South Florida following his retirement in 1949. There he spent his time deep-sea fishing while observing and admiring the local sportfishing boats. Using his knowledge of boat racing and airplanes, he decided to build his own pedigree vessel – one that combines speed with efficiency and beauty.

Continuing that tradition today, the 71’ Jim Smith “Fish On” is a custom sportfish yacht possessing the class, performance, and speed that we’ve come to expect from Jim Smith. Its cutting-edge technology and electronics, as well as its elaborate attention to craftsmanship and design, set this yacht apart from the competition.

Power and Speed – the Jim Smith Legacy

The “Fish On” wouldn’t encompass the Jim Smith nature if it was not fast. Powering this yacht are twin MTUs,12-2000 M94 Common Rail producing 1800 horsepower each. These engines can quickly get this yacht to a cruising speed of 32 Knots at 1850 RPM and a top speed of 40 knots. Expect this sportfish to power you through any conditions to quickly reach your long-distance destination. Just as importantly, the vessel is outfitted for the utmost fishing abilities and billfish excursions.

Inside the “Fish On,” you’ll be met with the luxury and sophistication that sets this yacht apart from others. The master stateroom and master head are a carefully crafted work of art boasting rubbed satin varnished teak with Japanese marble wood inlay and exotic marble surfaces. Ample closet space and storage, natural prism lighting and a 30” Sony TV and surround sound system compliment the “Fish On” splendidly. The VIP stateroom has side-by-side single bunks that can be modified into a queen berth and another pullman berth for extra guests. The guest stateroom has Hi-Lo bunks and plenty of storage. The guest stateroom also doubles as a crew quarters as the room features all of the ships monitoring devices and a 20” HD Sharp flat screen TV. Another guest stateroom features a single fixed berth and pullman for extra space and storage if needed.

Dining, Activities and Entertainment

The dazzling amenities exemplify the excellent craftsmanship that illuminates from the 71’ Jim Smith “Fish On.” The salon, galley, and extra-large dinette come well stocked and fully furnished. The salon features a beautiful Corinthian L-shaped leather sofa and a custom teak hi/lo cocktail table for dining and serving drinks. A full entertainment center with a pop-up 50” Sony television is sure to keep everyone entertained and enjoying the beautiful space. The sizable dinette features an impressive teak table and a leather sofa for seating.

The galley contains top of the line appliances including a dishwasher, convection oven, Miele custom cooktop, and ice maker. The counter space is generous enough to double as a bar with two custom teak bar stools. Most importantly, the area has plentiful storage with under-counter refrigeration and freezer space, an oversized pantry, and custom storage for pots and pans. The galley has beautifully crafted real teak, satin finished, hardwood floors. To stay connected, onboard is a KVH V3 satellite system that provides internet and phone connection, as well as Directv service.

At its heart, this is a sportfishing yacht equipped with only the best fishing gear and accessories onboard. Many of the staterooms feature custom rod and reel storage behind the berths. A massive tackle room is set up to store large 80 and 130-pound rods and reels. The flybridge boasts dual helm chairs and bow thrusters as well as Seastar power steering, making getting around on the open water a breeze. NORDHAVN 71

Nordhavn 71.

The Nordhavn 71 is a brand new boat that will follow in the wake of the  Nordhavn 80 , providing her owners an elegant, modern, state-of-the-art passagemaking yacht. The N71 is a brand new hull, created especially for those who find themselves in the upper end of the mid-size range, who desire the esthetic of one of Nordhavn’s larger yachts, but want the ability to manage without crew.

Indeed, with the first three hulls committed by former owners of Nordhavn 68 or Nordhavn 60 models, the N71 seems to be filling a void. Nordhavn co-owner and Chief of Design Jeff Leishman said the N71 is a modern response to the third generation Nordhavns that were built in the early 2000s. Styling, technology and creature comforts have all evolved since then. “It was time to provide that size category in our product line with a new alternative,” he said.

The Nordhavn 71 is available in two layouts: a three-stateroom layout with skylounge, or a layout that incorporates a fourth stateroom in place of the skylounge. While decidedly smaller than the 80, the N71 mimics her twin model configuration, sleek lines and advanced level of engineering. She was designed with Nordhavn’s in-house Computational Fluid Dynamics program. As is the case with all long-range Nordhavns, she will have ocean-crossing capability and will be built to the strictest CE Certification standard for offshore use.

Like every new Nordhavn design, real world experience and customer feedback went into the creation of this new model. “We took everything we knew from the Nordhavn 68 and 76 models and applied the parts that were most successful into creating the N71,” said Project Manager Justin Zumwalt. Zumwalt has spent the past 16 years overseeing the N64/68 and N72/76 projects, and was a natural choice to manage the 71.

Esthetics aside, the N71 benefits from more intuitive space planning, a stepped-up lighting schedule, a big dining room, spacious owners cabin and larger windows. She will also keep in step with newer Nordhavns being offered with a more complete spec, thus keeping costs and build time wrangled. This won’t be a cookie-cutter boat by any means, however. The specification includes a credit for furniture so buyers can choose their own chairs, dining table, pillows and the like, resulting in a highly-individualized yacht.

DC SYSTEM DC power is provided by 12 volt DC and 24 volt DC systems. Southern Ocean Shipyard or SOS was at the forefront of building bluewater cruising yachts, in the UK, with their iconic range of Van de Stadt designs. The Ocean 71 was a superb sailing yacht. Great to look at, offering powerful sailing and fast passage times and with practical and comfortable accommodation. Her split rig made her easier to handle. These yachts have voyaged to all corners of our planet, taking families and charter guests far.

Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY has the advantage of a very experienced owner who rebuilt her in the UK in 1998 and again in 2016. She is in cosmetically great condition, but importantly her systems and mechanics have all been upgraded or replaced in this ownership.

She offers enormous potential for serious sailing and is in great operational condition. Whilst writing, we would like to thank Tim Wright for the use of the photographs in this specification.

Owner’s Comments

I have owned Ocean 71, OCEAN JOY as a family boat for 25 years. I rebuilt her in 1998 at Hamble, including new engine room and systems, new generator, exhaust systems with separators from Halyard Marine, Aquafresh water maker, bilge pumping, shaft, Aqua drive, Maxprop, Condaria reverse cycle air conditioning with handles in four cabins, completely new domestic plumbing, complete rewire of entire boat (by Datayacht, Lymington), new fresh water tanks, galley redesigned with new Force 10 cooker and new refrigeration, both masts rebuilt by original maker and leads rearranged on main mast to facilitate shorthanded sailing, new standing and running rigging and new sails, new anchor windlass and anchoring system to allow singlehanded anchoring and retrieval. New stainless steel stemhead fitting, pulpit, pushpit and all stanchions. New Andersen winches including 3 electric. Most systems were designed with redundancy in mind and for long distance cruising.

Over the years, I have continually maintained and upgraded OCEAN JOY and in 2015/2016 did a refit at Fox’s, Ipswich and at Southampton Yacht Services. Items included, hull osmosis treatment including re-laminating above and below waterline. Awlgrip paint on topsides and deck. New Tek-Tank water tanks, new main engine Perkins 6354, 115hp non turbo with probably less than 500 hours to date, all new Raymarine instruments, new standing rigging including rigging screws, 1×19 wire and all toggles, all new running rigging, new refrigeration, new Sanimarin electric heads plumbed for both fresh and seawater, new Spade main anchor. Steering overhauled by Whitlock engineer.

In my ownership OCEAN JOY has spent several winters cruising the Caribbean with summers in Maine and the US northeast. I think I have probably sailed her 12 times across the Atlantic, sometimes two handed but generally three handed. She is an exceptionally easy to sail, long legged and seakindly passage maker. I generally plan on covering 200 miles a day minimum with some days making 240 miles.

OCEAN JOY was built to Lloyds +100A1 with Lloyds machinery certificate. When I rebuilt her I maintained her in class. Around 2012 I allowed class to lapse because Lloyds new regulations relating to items such as watertight bulkheads were not practically possible to comply with.

Six bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named the Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in a matter of minutes with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados which form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was among those missing, along with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah. His wife Angela Bacares was rescued.

Mr Lynch, 59, is known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, the Italian coastguard said. Crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. They were all reported as missing.

The yacht's captain James Calfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, has been found dead, the Italian Coastguard has confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by the wife of Mr Lynch.

It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.

In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

Search Resumes for British Mogul and 5 Others After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily

The body of the vessel’s cook was recovered while divers searched the hull of the Bayesian for passengers, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.

Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.

Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.

Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.

Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.

The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .

When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.

Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”

The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.

Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.

“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”

Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.

“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.

Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.

Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.

“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”

The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.

The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.

He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.

But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”

The accident appears to have been caused by a major storm and a resulting tornado-like water column that ensnared and damaged the yacht. Among the other six people still missing are Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter and Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer. The voyage was to celebrate Lynch being acquitted of criminal charges in the U.S., and several members of his legal team were also on board. (The ship was registered to Lynch’s wife, one of the survivors.) By a terrible coincidence, the other person acquitted in Lynch’s trial — Autonomy’s finance head Stephen Chamberlain — had died just a few days before when he was hit by a car while out jogging. Mike Lynch, the investor and high-profile founder of U.K. tech firm Autonomy, has been declared missing at sea after the yacht he was on, the Bayesian , capsized in a storm off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning.

TechCrunch confirmed with a source close to the rescue operation that Lynch is one of six people missing from the boat. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is one of the 15 who have been rescued. One body has been found.

The news is a dramatic, tragic development for one of the more colorful, and sometimes controversial, figures in technology out of the U.K.

Lynch’s enterprise technology firm Autonomy was acquired in 2011 by HP for $11 billion — a major milestone for U.K. technology. But it quickly turned sour, and HP sued Lynch and other executives at the company, arguing it was misled in the transaction.

HP claimed that the deal led to a $4 billion loss — money it then demanded from Lynch and his former CFO. Lynch (pictured above, left) long asserted that he acted in good faith and that he was being made into a scapegoat over a merger gone bad.

That legal drama went on for more than a decade and involved a host of other thorny chapters, including Lynch’s extradition to the U.S. and a lot of very bad publicity for Lynch. It also led to a second civil case that took place in 2022 in the U.K., which Lynch lost.

The U.S. criminal case, where Lynch was charged with 15 counts of fraud and conspiracy, went to trial earlier this year in San Francisco. Finally, in June, Lynch was acquitted .

“I am elated with today’s verdict and grateful to the jury for their attention to the facts over the last ten weeks. My deepest thanks go to my legal team for their tireless work on my behalf,” Lynch said at the time. “I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.”

In the interim years, Lynch built up a profile in the U.K. as an investor, most prominently as the founder of Invoke Capital . The VC firm was the biggest investor in cybersecurity firm Darktrace, a connection that was not without its own controversy . It also invested in Sophia Genetics , Featurespace and Luminance, among others. And it appeared that this is the route that he was set to continue.
