Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The C&C 26 WAVE is based on the C&C 27-5 but with a winged keel and shorter rig. Thanks to ‘forensicsail’ for providing corrections.

C&C 26 wave

The c&c 26 wave is a 26.67ft masthead sloop designed by bob ball and built in fiberglass by c&c yachts since 1988..

The C&C 26 wave is a light sailboat which is a reasonably good performer. It is stable / stiff and has a low righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a day-boat. The fuel capacity is originally very small. There is a very short water supply range.

C&c 26'

Does anyone have any information on this particular boat? Looks like there were two models, the C&C 26' and the C&C Encounter 26'. These boats have more room than my 27' and seem to have very nice lines and good build quality. Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

There is an owner's forum on the website liked to below that will be able to give you a lot of info. Personally - I have never heard of a C&C "Encounter" 26, and am wonering if you might be confusing it with something else. You'll be able to get some kind of definitive answer in the owners' forum I am sure... http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/

I've never heard of the "Encounter 26" either, but they did make a nice little 24 footer they called a C&C Niagara 24, and many haven't heard of that one either..... (we won't mention the Mega 30) I've always thought the C&C 26 was a little chubby and stubby compared to their other offerings, almost as if they were going for 30 feet but suddenly came to the end of the roll of drafting paper <g>. But they are roomy for their length, to be sure. There are a few around here, one has had a decent PHRF career. Another was recently tricked out with a double spreader rig that's worth more than the boat itself.....

Have you looked at the C&C 30 Mk I ? Solid glass hull, nice performer and fairly roomy. Also check out Hughes 31SE.

c&c 26 sailboat data

The story I heard was that C&C wanted at one time to reduce costs so created a 29 and a 26 in place of the 30 and 27 models for the same market. This lasted a couple of years and then they came back with the 30 and 27. There is a C&C26 at our marina and the owners like it. It is very beamy and thus roomy below but the usual complaint about these boats is that they are slower than the 27s they replaced. The owners of the boat at our marina are cruisers and have not really commented on this slowness nor do they seem overly concerned. Same build quality as the other C&C models around late seventies/very early 80s. Don't know if that helps. Mike

I'm looking for a C&C 30 MKII, if anyone knows of one for sale let me know. C&C make a fantasic boat.

Mike, that is the same story that I have heard...on the money! Like those Hughes 31's! Chris

Just a general comment on C&Cs: Aside from the known issues with balsa core in the decks and the general tendency to not do as well downwind as upwind, one of the virtues of C&Cs designs over a long period and over most of their model range from 25 foot-41 foot is that if you've driven one, you will have a pretty good handle on how they all can be driven. I've driven now the C&C 27 (various marks), the 29, the 30, the 33, (and I own a Viking 33, a C&C design), the 35, the 38 and the 41. While naturally not identical in sailing characteristics, they share a commonality that makes it relatively simple for a C&C fancier to move up or down the model range without expecting nasty surprises. A notable constant is the hull forms and the ballast ratio, at least in the cruiser-racers (I haven't sailed a Landfall): C&Cs will power up going to windward and will heel strongly...and then stop and accelerate further as the increased LWL comes into play. This "stiffness" (and the tendency to go over to 20-22 degrees in a gust), is called variously "the slot", "the track" or "getting into the groove" and C&C owners can predict the conditions needed to achieve it. It makes crewing on vintage C&Cs throughout various PHRF classes relatively straightforward, because they tend to be driven in a predictable way. (Hughes were good boats, by the way, also, particularly the 31 and the 38, but just as an aside, I was able to outrace a Hughes 38 with a roller furler in 18-20 knots of wind in my Viking 33 with hank-ons precisely due to getting into that "slot" I mentioned and the fact I could point a good deal higher. Of course, living and cruising on a Viking 33 is like camping in the basement of a brown plaid-appointed trailer, but I digress...)

I just sold my C&C 24', and what a wonderful boat! It truly like to go to the wind, and yes did she heel! Rail in, not a problem, unless your trying to use the head, pour a drink or just don't like that sort of thing. Very fun boat and had much more room than one would think. Biggest downfall, IMHO is the lack of an inboard motor, companionway door to low to cockpit floor, and real head. Extremely well built and extremely fun to sail. Replaced the C&C with a T-27, and again very happy with another great boat and company...Hummm, maybe that's why C&C and Tartan are now owned by the same. However, will not point anywhere near what that C&C would. However, the T-27 gives more room, with a real head, headroom, new universal "D"(oppossed to the A-4). If I were thinking of buying another C&C, I would have to consider the Corvette 30'. What a nice looking classic style boat at a nice price point. Enjoy

  10. C&C 26 Impressions

The original 26 was part of the same series including 29 MK1 and the 34 - some of the earliest cored-hull production boats from C&C. It's a roomy boat for it's length, a bit boxy-looking compared to the standard C&C fare of the day. All three boats were said to be 'tender', but sailed well by all reports.
