Performance Cruising Yachts has grown to become one of the largest and most respected retailer of new luxury yachts in Australia

Our history in the sailing business

Established in 1995 by Olympic Yachtsman Matt Hayes, we are one of the oldest sailing businesses in Australia. We have been importing to Australia premium brands such as Hunter Yachts and Silverton Motor Cruises from the USA, garnering great success and many awards. Since 2013, we became Australia’s exclusive importer for Elan Yachts, and since 2015, exclusive Australian importers of Dufour Yachts from France. We have imported hundreds of yachts. And we have delivered them to all states of Australia, as well as importing into New Zealand, Fiji, the USA and Europe. Combined with our commercial sailing operation, Sydney By Sail, we have provided the wonderful experience of sailing to over 100,000 people from all over the world since the inception of our business.

We are not just any company that sells yachts. Rather we are a one stop shop for sailing, and one of the most diversified sailing businesses in Australia. Through our two brands we offer small to large yachts for cruising, fast cruising, live aboard cruising and racing. We provide technical advice on all aspects of sailing from raw beginners to the upper echelons of racing. Through our recognised Yacht Training Academy, we train to all levels, ranging from absolute beginner to the levels of internationally recognised bareboat skipper. We offer not only new yachts for purchase, but also yacht share and yacht charter investment. We arrange yacht deliveries, and catering for yachts from our base at Sydney’s Darling Harbour as well as temporary berthing right in the heart of Sydney. When dealing with PCY you will not experience heavy handed fast talking salesman, rather dedicated seasoned enthusiasts who love talking about our product range and what we can do. We pride ourselves on our service, attention to detail and enduring relationships with our customers.

Sailing has been Matt’s passion since he was a boy, taking to the waters of Sydney Harbour with his father and uncle. Matt went on to win many state and national championships, and represented Australia in many world championships with many podium finishes, as well as Admirals Cups and Kenwood Cups. The pinnacle of his competitive career was in 1996, when Matt represented Australia in the Soling Class at the Atlanta Olympic Games, held in Savannah, Georgia. Matt has competed in many Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races – the first at just 18 years of age as helmsman on board Police Car – and 10 as principle helmsman of Ragamuffin IOR, IRC and TP 52 again with many podium finishes. From Manly Juniors to Cherubs, to 16 foot skiffs and 100 ft super maxis, Matt is renowned for his helming ability and his ability to read the waves and the wind. He also knows how to teach other people to sail, starting his first sailing school at 17 years of age. His passion is to share his love of wind and ocean – to introduce new people to the joys of sailing. He wishes to pass on his knowledge to maximise performance and enjoyment during the customer experience.

Edward Penn

General manager.

Ed has over 20 years experience within the marine industry and brings a massive wealth of knowledge and expertise to all areas of the business. He supervises the entire purchase process from the initial enquiry, build specification, shipping, commissioning to hand over and after sales. He has a hawk eye for detail when it comes to fit, finish and final delivery to the customer. Ed is passionate about sailing and the yachts that we sell and it shows. Growing up on the east coast of England, he was sailing competitively from early age and continued to do so whilst studying at Sheffield Hallam University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree, he also became a sailing instructor and commercial skipper to allow him to pass on his skills and love for the sport. To further his understanding of the yachts we sell he has spent time at the various shipyards in the USA, Slovenia, Croatia and France and has developed strong relationships with the key personnel in both sales and the after sales departments. Due to Ed’s dedication to service, our company has been awarded numerous Awards for Customer Service.

Neil Easson

Operations & commissioning manager.

Neil is a highly qualified and seasoned mariner who developed his seamanship skills whilst working in the Caribbean aboard luxury super yachts engaging in deliveries and Atlantic crossings on vessels up to 130ft. Retained as 1stMate he toured the world until finally returning to Australia in 2002 where he continued his studies to gain a Certificate IV in Marine Operations (Formally known as Master Class 4) and is able to master vessels up to 35m commercially. Neil also has extensive experience working on large motor cruisers, specifically the Sunseeker brand where he for many years was master aboard a 34m model and later a 38m model for which he oversaw the build in the UK, on behalf of the owner, its commissioning and launch. Neil also has a commercially endorsed Yacht Master Ocean certificate and is a valued member of our team responsible for a range of commissioning duties, deliveries, private tuition and after sales services.

Dufour 38 Classic

Dufour 38 Classic in a popular 3 cabin layout is a highly sought after yacht and this one is in exceptional condition.

Built in 1998 when production boats were known for durability and strength.

The Dufour 38 Classic is a fine example of a production yacht. Dufour sailboats have a reputation for being seagoing passagemakers. The builder has a philosophy that stresses a combination of performance and comfort under all manner of weather conditions. The 38 Classic crosses oceans happily and is as at home in the Virgin Islands as the English Channel or sailing The Pacific. The 38's underbody, with its fin keel and fine entries, combines speed and stability with fingertip control, even when reefed in heavy weather.

The 38 has a streamlined deckhouse and slight sheer typical of modern-day cruising boats, with a nicely executed reverse transom that allows for the obligatory swimming and boarding area. It's a good looking yacht, and has a large comfortable cockpit with nicely contoured seats. Wide sidedecks make it possible to move forward safely and rapidly, using the long grabrails on the cabintop. All halyards and sail controls are led aft to the cockpit, and there are self-tailing Lewmars either side of the companionway. A large anchor locker and hefty bow roller clearly make this a boat that rejoices in easy anchoring. A small teak seat is in the bow pulpit.

Visibility from the helm is exceptional, and there is some separation from the crew working the jib and mainsheets, the latter being set over the cabinhouse, giving excellent control of the main. The liferaft stows under the aft helm seat and is close to hand. A convenient grab handle rises from the compass binnacle, and doubles as an instrument bracket. The same fitting also supports the cockpit table and is an excellent place to hold on in rough weather. This is a comfortable seagoing cockpit that very much fits with the character of this boat as a serious passagemaker.

The companionway leads into a large, well-ventilated saloon a dinette to starboard and a slightly curved galley counter to port, with gas stove, deep chest style refrigerator, and lockers. It's very liveable since the cook can simply hand food or drink across to the seated crew. The solid backrest of the midships dinette bench serves as a strategic support for the cook under way, and most things can be reached from this bracing position. The counter space is truly enormous. A well-equipped navigation station, moderm Raymarine electronics with hinged chart table and bench seat is aft of the dinette, with a chart light, nicely placed locker, space for bino's and the electric panel close to hand. There is a large drawer for charts under the table.

The interior is finished with a white deckhead and veneered mahogany, a Dufour trademark, which gives a pleasing effect with its carefully chosen grain patterns. Moving fore and aft under way is made easier by rounded grabrails on either side of the deckhead and the dinette seat back. It's a very comfortable boat. The main stateroom is a large V-berth forward, a head and shower to starboard with a hanging locker opposite. This is in addition to the head that is already slotted in aft of the galley on the port side.

The head is roomy and nicely designed with a comfortable teak shower seat. Two double berths in symmetrical cabins on either side of the companionway under the cockpit, each with its own hanging lockers. Engine access is excellent and achieved by removing the companionway and the engine cover on either side inside the aft cabins.

There are cruising boats that make for comfortable short passages and brief cruises, and then there are cruising boats that have a certain indefinable quality to them that hints at longer voyages and taking any weather the elements throw in along the way. The Dufour has this latter quality and exudes the manners and solidness of a thoroughly confident cruising yacht.

She is easily sailed single-handed or by a couple. A perfect boat for those wanting to sail locally or around Australian waters and will happily take you into The Pacific and beyond, especially if you plan to only have a small crew.

DUFOUR 335 YACHT

Available for bareboat or skippered charter on sydney harbour.

The Dufour 335 is an easy to sail yacht that is licenced for 10 people (9 + skipper) and is available on Sydney Harbour.  With the twin wheels there is easy access to the swim platform. For overnight charters, it can sleep 6 guests in 2 double cabins + 2 single berths in the saloon.

The Dufour 335 Grand Large gathers all the successful advantages of a much bigger boat. She is designed for longer cruising but her comfort and layout are a surprise for a boat of this size. Its wide open cockpit is revolutionary for a 33ft boat providing space and comfort usually reserved for larger boats. Twin wheels and redesigned rigging with no need for a backstay increase the feeling of space, safety and comfort. Single or short handed sailing can be a breeze with this model.

Down below you will see a larger than normal aft cabin, spacious forecabin and a spacious and well designed head. The 335 Grand Large galley is fully kitted out for living, starting with a large refrigerator, sink and twin burner oven, coupled with Corian work surfaces and bags of clever storage. It’s quite striking that she has no backstay, thanks to a rethink of the rigging and spreader design; secondly, she has twin wheels — quite something for such a small yacht — which gives easy access to the aft bathing platform area (particularly without a backstay in the way); and thirdly, she has been designed with some above-class-average tankage to deliver cruising autonomy.

Her two-cabin interior is fairly straightforward, with a portside aft galley at the foot of the wider-than-usual hatch and companionway and a chart table to starboard, with the midships area given to twin fore and aft bench settees and a central table.

The sleeping cabins — one in the bow and one in the stern — mean that you can cruise with friends without getting in each other’s way.

Available for a minimum of 4 hours with or without a skipper.

Sailboat Review: Dufour 41

When it comes to a discussion of the great European naval architects of contemporary times—and it’s a long list, indeed—certain names immediately pop to mind. Many are French. Philippe Briand made his mark creating boats for a roster of production builders (Baltic, Jeanneau, CNB) before pivoting to the superyacht set (Perini Navi, Royal Huisman). Jean-Marie Finot was more or less the father of an era of the best Vendée Globe solo round-the-world racers ever to compete in that grueling contest. Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prévost (VPLP Design) are the current masters of offshore multihulls. The talented tandem of Jean Berret and Olivier Racoupeau are ubiquitous as the creators of many French brands, and sit at the forefront of their profession. 

To me, however, one of the more underrated European ­design mavens, and one who definitely belongs in that rarefied grouping, is Umberto Felci. While Felci was born in Milan and still operates from his base in Italy, I’ve always considered him a huge influence in French ­boatbuilding­—largely because of his longtime association with Dufour Yachts, where he’s been the principal designer for some 15 years. 

During that time, I’ve sailed many a Felci boat, as he’s been a consistent presence in Cruising World ’s annual Boat of the Year contest . He has won multiple times with his Dufour entries, including the 560 Grand Large (2014), the 382 Grand Large (2015), and the 520 Grand Large (2018). All of these Grand Large boats shared a similar DNA, and the Dufour booths at the major boat shows were easily ­recognizable for their similar lines and matching beige canvas dodgers and sail covers. The only huge difference across the fleet was their respective sizes.

All that changed in a big way in 2019, after the Fountaine Pajot group acquired Dufour and decided to make each new offering a singular model in form and styling. Which brings us to Felci’s newest design, the Dufour 41. 

Aesthetically, it’s safe to say that the bright-blue Dufour 41 at this past year’s Annapolis Sailboat Show in Maryland was one of the more distinctive-looking yachts on display. It has a rounded bow, ample beam, and not one but two chines, both carried almost the entire length of the boat—one just above the waterline, another just below the reverse sheer line, which is accentuated by prominent molded bulwarks. This boat looks and feels much larger than its 41 feet length overall. Forward, an integrated bowsprit for the ground tackle and the tack point for the asymmetric kite heightens the futuristic vibe. As does the series of three sleek windows in the hull (along with the additional pair of windows overhead in the coachroof). There is not a stick of timber to be found anywhere. 

Topsides, the ­combination of wide side decks and outboard shrouds makes for easy egress when moving forward or aft. The emphasis on “outdoor living” is underscored by a generous cockpit with twin wheels (but, as with all Dufours, a single rudder, which makes backing down easier and with more control). There’s also wraparound seating, including a cushioned daybed, as well as a drop-down transom, which doubles as the porch/platform for the barbecue well aft. All this is revolved around a table—a pretty sweet, comfortable layout that lends the impression of lounging aboard a much bigger boat. 

All the related equipment is first-rate. There’s B&G instrumentation, including the chart plotter and autopilot; a Quick vertical windlass with helm controls for the Delta anchor; and a Side-Power (Sleipner) bow thruster, which I reckon is a luxurious touch on a 41-footer. Our test boat was set up with a nice set of Elvstrøm sails, including a traditional mainsail (an in-mast furling mainsail is available) with a cool stack-pack arrangement that tucks into itself and is secured with shock cords. For our Boat of the Year trials, we test all the emergency rudders, and the one on the 41 was exceptional. 

Construction is straightforward and robust. The hull is vacuum-infused with solid glass below the waterline and a foam core above. There are a pair of molded-in channels for the plumbing and electrical wiring. The plywood bulkheads are laminated to the hull. The keel is cast iron. And, as with every Dufour going back to the company’s origins, a wine rack is stashed under the floorboards. 

Ardizio Design is ­responsible for the belowdecks accoutrements, accommodations and floor plan. Its team used those aforementioned chines and, more specifically, the voluminous interior that the chines created, to wide advantage. As with Dufour’s other models, there are three packages of features, trim and equipment—on the 41, these are labeled Adventure, Ocean and Performance—depending on how the boat will be used (basic sailing, dedicated cruising or racing). With the 41, there are also two interior options: either three or four staterooms. Both have a straight-line galley to starboard, with the dining table and wraparound settee to port.

Our test boat had the three-stateroom layout, with a spacious master forward and a pair of double-berth staterooms aft. It also had three heads, which, to be honest, seems like a bit of overkill on a 41-foot boat. The second head, in the center of the boat, can be replaced with stowage, which is the setup I’d prefer. 

The 41 sports a double-­spreader rig with swept-back spreaders and a self-­tacking jib. The double-ended German-style mainsheet, anchored at midboom, is easily trimmed with a pair of electric winches (an optional electric winch for the mainsail is ­available). There’s no traveler; after all, this is a cruising boat. 

Under power, the 50 hp Volvo Penta with a saildrive configuration had us zipping along at better than 6 knots. This was one of the quieter boats, decibel-wise, in the 2024 fleet. But we were all itching to hoist the sails, and we were not disappointed. At first, in a fitful breeze that was just filling in, we still made over 5 knots in 6 to 8 knots of wind. Soon enough, the pressure built into the 10- to 12-knot range, just in time to hoist the boat’s big asymmetric kite. On a tight reach, we made an effortless 7.5 knots, and the helm was just delightful, with only a light three-finger touch required for full control. 

Those Grand Large prizewinners from years past were, of course, all Felci designs. While this new Dufour looks absolutely nothing like its older siblings, it sails just as well, if not better. Felci may have changed the recipe under the company’s new regime, but he hasn’t forgotten that what we really want is pretty simple: We want to go for a fine sail.

French boatbuilders were pioneers in fiberglass-sailboat manufacturing. Naval architect/engineer Michel Dufour joined their ranks in 1964 with the launching of the Sylphe, a radical (for its time) 21-foot pocket cruiser with a masthead rig and fin keel with attached ballast bulb. More than 400 were built in a 10-year production run.

Dufour has ramped up its introduction of new models in the past five years, and now has nine in production ranging from 37 to 61 feet, with a 44-footer on tap to be introduced in the United States this fall. Of that collection, the company’s 41, 470 and 530 are all available with electric auxiliary-propulsion options.

Dufour has laid out an aggressive growth strategy, planning to introduce two models each year for the next several years, and replacing its entire fleet within four years. As for the 41, a company representative said that about a third of the run will go to private owners, a third will be purchased by charter operators, and a third will go into charter-management programs.
