DESIGNER’S BACKGROUND:

Ian Farrier first started sailing multihulls virtually by accident. As a twenty year old New Zealand engineering student and monohull sailor, looking for a keelboat to do some offshore cruising he couldn’t find anything suitable. After searching an unfinished 30’ trimaran project was purchased, following a comprehensive two year rebuild it was launched in 1969. Although not the perfect boat is sowed the seed for his future career.

In 1972 he arrived in Brisbane, Australia, where the growing popularity of the monohull trailer sailer was noted while crewing on a local trimaran. A trailerable trimaran appeared to have many advantages over trailerable monohulls, so he decided to look at what could be done. The Farrier Folding System™ was then invented, patented, and the prototype Trailertri 18 was built and launched in 1974. It worked beautifully and he then built five more Trailertris of various sizes, while trying out many different configurations. Over this period the folding trailerable trimaran slowly began to establish itself as a practical and exciting option, to eventually become one of the fastest growing segments of sailing.

In 1984 Ian and his family moved to Chula Vista (San Diego), where financial backing had been found to set up Corsair Marine. He then designed the F-27, built the prototype, and developed and established Corsair’s full production system and quality controls. With 100 boats being produced every year, and an excellent reputation established, it was time to concentrate on new designs, so he resigned from Corsair in 1991, and moved to Bellevue (Seattle). Corsair was subsequently licensed to build the F-24, F-28 and F-31 designs, in a productive ongoing relationship, though rocky at times, with varying ownership/management at Corsair.

34's and they seem quite nice! There were some used, nicely equiped for around 130k too. That's definately in my range. I have a few questions about that if you don't mind.

Would that be a lot roomier than the F31? I'd like it to be quite comfortable for two and have enough room for four the odd time.

Would it be enough to go from the , across Panana then up the Pacific coast? I would probably want to stop lots of places along the way and I would probably stay quite close to the shore.

For what I plan on doing, is the dual going to give me many performance disadvantages over a three ?

What I'm really after is something that is going to give me an enjoyable ride from town to town and coast to coast. My life long goal has always been to explore the world. I figure sailing is the best way to do that and that the is a great place to start. I love the culture and my girlfriend is Colombiana so she really wants to know more of the area as well. Right now, I'm looking for something to get started on and it sounds like this is a great place to start.

Boat: FP Lavezzi 40 / Hatteras 48
is vastly more roomy than the F31 - there's really no comparison.

I don't think performance comparisons between the two serve much purpose as they're designed for completely different uses. One thing is certain, cruising loads will take the performance edge off both and I suspect that it would really blunt the F31's performance as that boat simply isn't designed with those kinds of loads in mind.

The F31 is a real performance machine: light, fast and small. Think of it as a Porsche.

The Gemini is a comfortable : decent speeds, lots of space and comfort. Perhaps more like a Mercedes sedan.

I'm an avowed multi enthusiast. They're great!. Sadly, I'm a working class dude - hence the mono wins out.

I'm currently looking to buy a cruising boat. In a heartbeat, I'd buy a Cat but I'm only looking at monos. Multis are extremely load sensitive, so either make like a Buddhist monk and renounce all worldly possessions or call Uncle Bill and cash in your inheritance and look no further than:

C36 from Ian Farrier's website:

"It should also be noted that Corsair's C36 should not be confused with the Farrier F-36 or F-39, which are completely different trimarans, and true ocean going cruisers. The 36 is based on the initial F-35 hull lines, but my involvement ended very early in the design process due to various differences, along with concerns about supervision and quality controls. Corsair renamed this design the Corsair 36, and after various problems they have now renamed it again as the C37. Farrier has had no involvement in either structure or implementation of the C36/C37, and actual is unknown. I closely inspected one example which had experienced a number of failures, and found the beams and folding system structure were not to Farrier standards. This is a that I would definitely avoid."

Additional information regarding the Farrier / Corsair relationship can be found here:

then up the Pacific coast? I would probably want to stop lots of places along the way and I would probably stay quite close to the shore.

For what I plan on doing, is the dual hull going to give me many performance disadvantages over a three hull?

While it is hard to compare so many different boats, generally the will have a performance edge over a cat in windward ability and light air sailing. A cat will definitely give you more space and maybe a slight increase in payload. I prefer the ride and handling of a tri. To me it is the most responsive and fun to sail of the three types, tri, cat, and mono. Others may have other preferences. We can all tell you what we like the best but you should get some time on some of these boats to see if there is something that speaks to you. Load carrying ability can be kind of a bogus issue IMO. It is not the "old days" when you carried 150 gallons of water and 6 months of provisions, especially as it sounds like your intent is coastal cruising. You will have to watch your loading on a multihull but if you chose a good boat it will have the capacity for a comfortable home for two. Just to throw out a number so you have some idea, my 40 has a designed payload of 3600 lbs.

Alot of people don't consider the Gemini to be a real blue water boat but I think it makes a pretty decent coastal cruiser. The 105 being a better choice over the older 3400,3300, etc models. Others have mentioned some other good choices. How about a 36? Trimarans are harder to come by but with the exception of the Farriers will be less expensive. Some other trimarans to consider would be 34, 37, and 40. Cross 35, 38, and 40. Marples Constant Camber 35, 37, 40. A Simpson Liahona 40 would be a great choice if you could find one.

I say stick with a multihull. Fast is fun. Sailing on the level is even better.

Fram's Building and Sailing Pages

F-39 trimaran design by ian farrier.

The Farrier F-39 trimaran, a further development of the Farrier F-36 trimaran, is a large ocean going sport cruiser, with the now third generation Farrier Folding System™ incorporated. This gives tremendous versatility for an ocean capable boat. Folded beam is 15' (4.57m) and is thus small enough to access most inland waterways and locks.

The fractional rig is efficient and easy to handle in all conditions, and the boat can be sailed to its full potential with a minimum of sails. The jib will be self tacking and the screacher, set from the bow pole, eliminates the traditional genoa and multiple sail changes, making sail handling a breeze. It's even more ideal for cruising.

The daggerboard is centered in the main hull, while the new designed transom hung daggerboard style 'kick-up' rudder is housed in its own composite case. The self-draining center cockpit with wheel steering can seat six. The 30HP Yanmar inboard engine is located in an accessible area under the cockpit. Maneuverability is excellent under power, due to the trimaran's superior turning ability, its center hull and daggerboard being natural pivots.

Interior will accommodate eight, with standing headroom throughout. Galley is to port, and a chart table is on the starboard side, along with a wet locker. Dinette will seat five, and can be converted into a large double bunk. Starboard settee is wide and comfortable, and can be converted into top and bottom bunks. Forward, there is a private bathroom with head, washbasin, and a separate shower. Forward cabin has a double berth, with seating room aft, and large storage areas underneath. The aft cabin has a double berth with full sitting headroom. Access is through a hatch in the aft cabin front, or through under the cockpit.

After obtaining the F-36 plans Ian Farrier updated this design to the F-39. So finally, it is this combination of the best aspects of the F-25C, F-31, F-31R, and F-36, coupled with many improvements from F-36 owner feedback, that I am building. A number of other new features to incorporate in the F-39 are now being tested on the also new F-33. I think these new designs are the next generation Farrier tri's, with the addition of the newest materials and visions, among other things influenced by the recent successes of the big multihull races.

While the F-36 is provide with a fixed beam, but demountable for occasional transporting, for me the most important modification to the F-39 is the addition of the Farrier Folding System for marina docking, or canal traversing. Other new features:

F-39 compared to F-36 :

Using the vertical foam stripping building method the numbers of formframes are reduced (by 4);  The cabin roof is lifted 40 mm. making it possible to lift cabin floor also 40mm for more width and better storage underneath;  Floats (15% larger) and main hull are extended at bow and stern, making the overall length 39'4" (12 m.);  A redesigned and simpler 'third generation' Farrier Folding System™. This has been specifically optimized for serious ocean going, with a more integrated structural support system. The beam recesses (notches) in the center hull deck are now gone, for a cleaner and safer deck, while also eliminating any interior intrusion. Virtually all metal brackets, and the numerous large bolts required have also been eliminated, saving significant weight and complexity; Floats will fold in more vertical to eliminate the need for any anti-fouling high on the float side;  Floats incorporate a shaped deck that comes up to form a flat raised area for mounting the outboard edge of the wingnets. This eliminates any fore and aft aluminum tube for this purpose. When folded, the side of this raised area also forms a flat walkway on the float inner edge along the cabin side; Carbon fiber folding struts are set higher and further away from wave tops and have much less frontal area which is combined with sleek faired leading edges for minimal drag and spray generation; Beam outer ends tapered off slightly more (thinner vertically) and sweeping slightly higher, and are slightly longer to give a little more overall beam; Carbon fiber 'molded in' mounting points (replacing Bracket Plates) for the Beam Struts, to considerably reduce weight and frontal area;  Taller rotating carbon rig; Synthetic rigging - now considered more reliable than wire, while being much lighter; Carbon fiber chainplates in float and bow; Main hull bow is now slightly more vertical; A bow wing, providing additional bow side netting area and a storage place for the anchor; A fully retractable carbon bow pole; Transom hung daggerboard style 'kick-up' rudder with composite case. For the records, below the original Farrier files: The   Farrier  F-39    and the    Farrier  F-36

The New F-33

farrier 36 trimaran

The 2015 F-33 is a new design by Ian Farrier, having evolved from the F-32 , and replaces the original 2004 F-33 . It is available in several formats, the F-33 , F-33X (with wider center hull), or the more race orientated F-33R and F-33RX, plus all carbon versions, the F-33RC and F-33RXC . Both aft cabin and aft cockpit versions are also currently available.

The new F-33 is a truly modern ‘state of the art’ design, and incorporates the latest third generation Farrier Folding System ™. The third generation beams have no intrusion into the main cabin, and eliminate the awkward beam pockets in the cabin sides. Floats are as large as they can be for such a folding trimaran, with extra buoyancy having been designed in forward and low down for the maximum sail carrying power.

The standard F-33 offers more room than any other equivalent legally trailerable folding trimaran, due to efficient design, plus heavy and space robbing interior liners are not used , which also makes the F-33 the lightest available production boat of its type. The extra wide maxi F-33X is even larger again, and is easily the roomiest and most seaworthy folding trimaran in its class.

The new F-33 series has one major advantage over the original F-33, this being the availability of the narrower 2.6m (8′ 6″) F-33 version which is the largest legally trailerable trimaran available, with no permit required for US roads. The wider F-33X will require a permit to be trailered, but it has much more room and a higher load carrying capacity.

The new F-33 series has been designed with a limited ocean going capability in mind, and best of all they are true Farrier designs, so reliability is ensured.

A ‘kick back’ centerboard option is available for the new F-33 design series. This will give a ‘roomier feel’ to the main cabin, and a much larger cabin table (can easily seat 6) is now possible. The settee seatbacks can also be dropped in between settees to form a very spacious main cabin double.

The other major advantage is the ability for the board to ‘kick back’ should one run aground, and this can be a very useful safety feature in shallower waters. Board is a higher aspect foil than the standard daggerboard, so it will be slightly more effective. This will help make up for the extra slot drag associated with a centerboard case, and overall performance should be similar.

Note that ‘kick up’ centerboards are more complicated than a daggerboard, so more maintenance may be required. However, the configuration used has been very well developed and tested, and should be virtually trouble free.

The current F-33X interior quality and room can be seen in the following photos:

THIRD GENERATION FARRIER BEAMS AND FOLDING SYSTEM:

The latest F-33 beams have been designed to trap and deflect any spray downwards to eliminate or reduce spray at high speeds, while the beam folding strut anchors are internal which eliminates multiple metal brackets and bolts. This reduces windage, weight and complexity, while folding struts are now set higher, keeping them further away from wave tops. The above drawing also clearly shows the difference between the F-33 and F-33X .

Beams are more streamlined while also being slimmer and higher at outer ends for less drag. The inner beam end to main hull connections are now fully external, for easier setup and maintenance, and this also gives a lower trailering height with less windage on the road for more economical towing.

Models Defined:

F-33 – the standard version, legally trailerable in the USA without permit

F-33X – a wider, roomier maxi version, that will require a permit for trailering, the ‘X’ standing for extra room. The best choice for ocean work with a greater load carrying capacity, and a wider overall beam.

F-33R & F-33RX – more sporty racing versions for experienced sailors, with a taller rig, the ‘R’ standing for Race. Add ‘C’ at end for the all carbon version

F-33SR & F-33SRX – new highly powered super racing versions for experienced sailors only, with the very tall SR rig, the ‘SR’ standing for Super Race. Has a 50′ (15.24m) carbon mast, and all carbon construction is optional. Profile drawing below.

As with the original F-33, the new F-33 is expected to have a very high resale value, due to the high quality construction, and the design reputation. The last original F-33 sold did so within 10 days of going on the market, and the price paid for what was a 7 year old boat was near what it cost new. Such value means the F-33 will be a very low cost boat to own as was the case with the original F-27, which has been the resale value leader for many years.

The New F-33SR

A new addition to the F-33 range is the F-33SR or F-33SRX. These are ultra high performance versions of the F-33 and will replace the F-32SR, but with more interior room.

farrier 36 trimaran

There will be both glass and carbon options, the all carbon version being called the F-33SRC or F-33SRXC, and lifting foils will be optional.
