Boat of the Week: This Speedy 115-Foot Superyacht Comes With a Convertible Sky Lounge

The 115-foot lady nina might look like just another superyacht for family cruising, but its 40-mph top end makes it a wolf in sheep's clothing., howard walker, howard walker's most recent stories.

The waterjets are arguably the true headliner here, replacing conventional props and shafts that create speed-reducing drag. Lady Nina has three, with the two outer ones doing the steering and the center one acting as a booster.

The jets reduce noise and vibration, add impressive maneuverability, and reduce hull draft. Lady Nina draws just 4.5 feet, making it perfect for exploring shallow waters in the Bahamas and Caribbean. The equipment also gives the Maiora astonishing stopping ability. Though not recommended, it can “crash stop” from top speed to zero in just a single boat length. You just have to pick up a lot of things that flew off the shelves inside the boat.

“It’s a yacht with two personalities. She’s spacious for relaxed family cruising, yet has the power and speed to get places quickly,” Isabella Pico, head of communications for the Italian-based Next Yacht Group, on a tour of the boat at the Fort Lauderdale boat show.

Viareggio-based Maiora, while better known a decade ago in the U.S. market, is making a comeback. Founded in the 1970s, the builder and its sister companies AB Yachts and CBI Navi, are part of the Next Yacht Group, which came under new ownership in 2021, with strong financial backing to help grow its boat brands.

Designed in-house at Maiora, the Exuma—priced new starting around $18.5 million—is distinguished by its vertical bow, a short, almost stubby foredeck, a big open stern and a top-deck sky lounge. Designed in-house, the yacht is also unusual in that it has an asymmetric deck layout to increase interior space. That means there’s only a teak-decked walkway on the port side.

“Big interior volumes are what sets the yacht apart,” says Pico. “The owner wanted to enjoy life aboard with his large family and give everyone their space. Many of his requests make the yacht more livable.”

That includes the innovative top-deck sky lounge. While it can be a completely enclosed, air-conditioned space, at the touch of a few buttons the side windows lower, the forward windshield drops down, the sliding-glass rear doors open, and an almost full-length roof panel opens up.

The owner, who typically steers the yacht from the upper deck, wanted the opening version because he likes easy conversations with anyone on the top deck. The sky lounge also has a 10-person dining table, a well-equipped outdoor galley, and a large open rear deck with movable sofas and chairs.

On the main deck, the owners’ suite is designed across the yacht’s 25’7” beam, with near floor-to-ceiling windows. In the connecting en suite are separate his-and-hers glassed-in shower stalls. The lower deck, meanwhile, holds four other cabins, including an oversize VIP spacious enough on other boats this size to be the master suite.

Up in the main salon, the space is designed for kicking back, relaxing, and watching television. There’s no formal dining area here, with the rear deck doubling as an alfresco dining spot. Possibly the most “formal” feature is the custom-built cooler for the owner’s expansive tequila collection.

One especially novel feature is the flood-able garage that’s big enough to hold a 21-foot Williams Dieseljet 625 tender, while a high-lifting section of the rear deck raises-up to reveal a second garage for Lady Nina’s collection of water toys, plus an 11-foot RIB.

Lady Nina Maoira Yachts

Lady Nina’s cruising sweet-spot of 12 mph, says Pico, delivers a range of 1,600 nautical miles.

If a 40 mph top end isn’t enough, a prospective owner could always choose triple 2,600 hp MTU diesels. Top speed then rockets to a positively zippy 46 mph.

Meet ‘Lady Nina,’ a 115-Foot Carbon-Fiber Yacht That’s as Fast as It Is Stylish

Maiora has become somewhat of a front runner in the field of fast, fiberglass yachts. The Italian yard, which is an offshoot of Fipa Group , has delivered a spate of breakneck vessels since it was founded in the ’70s. its latest 115-footer, known as Lady Nina , features a high-speed planing hull and promises to cut your travel time in half.

The first in Maiora’s new Exuma series, the vessel features the yard’s signature carbon fiber construction with both interiors and exteriors designed in-house. She was built for a repeat client from the Americas and debuted at the Genoa Boat Show earlier this month. Naturally, her unique form garnered a lot of attention.

Lady Nina was named after an archipelago in the Bahamas and, fittingly, navigates shallow waters with ease. She’s unusually fast for her size thanks to her fast planing hull, which sees her ride on top of the water instead of pushing through it like a displacement yacht.

On top of that, AB Yachts —a pioneer of water jet propulsion that is also part of Fipa Group—made sure Lady Nina had plenty of (efficient) grunt. The vessel sports three 1,925 HP Caterpillar C32 Acert engines that are mated to two MJP steerable waterjets and a central booster jet. This allows Lady Nina to reach a top speed of 35 knots with next to no vibration and cover some 1,600 nautical miles. If you’re looking to get from Florida to the Bahamas in half the time, this is your gal.

To top it off, Lady Nina offers luxurious interiors fit for marine connoisseurs. The expansive main salon opens up onto an airy aft deck that spans roughly 645 square feet and is perfect for al fresco entertaining. She can sleep a total of 10 guests across a stately full-beam master suite, three guest cabins and a VIP suite that’s located on the lower deck. The real pièce de résistance, however, is the refrigerated tequila rack that is integrated into one of the side columns between the main salon and aft deck. Did somebody say salud?

MAIORA Exuma 35

Maiora 35 Exuma – Lady Nina

Superyacht 68-Winter-2020-2021

“Lady Nina” is a one –off yacht for one of its faithful returning clients. It is built by Maiora on a made to measure basis comprising expert tailor made work and the perfect know how thanks also to Gruppo Fipa.

Maiora is part owned by Gruppo Fipa, it is currently experiencing a successful period. So far this year in spite of the Covid 19 the shipyard can be very proud for having launched three new units. Two are Maiora 30 metre models but one of them is a Walkaround version and the other is a Convertible one. The latest is this unique 35 Exuma named “Lady Nina”.

MAIORA Exuma 35

Excluding CBI Navi their production is directed toward an even more specific clientele, the Exuma 35 has taken back its stylish motor yacht look complete with the classic fly deck from Maiora even if proposed in a modern outfit, while AB yachts has changed performance and has taken to water-jet drives. In fact it is equipped with three Cat C32 engines with 1,915 HP each, two MJP 650 DRB water-jets and a central booster. In fact “Lady Nina” is one of few 35 metre fly-deck versions capable of reaching 35 knots while maintaining what has become proverbial manoeuvrability thanks to these types of drive units.

Water-jets’ advantage also extend over an ample cruising speed range and enhance sailing shallow waters which the owner requested so as to be in touch with Cat Island beaches, the Abacos, Paradise Island and Exumas. Thanks to an hourly fuel consumption of just 160 litres with twin engines and generator switched on and a fuel tank containing 22,000 litres, at ten knots the range is of 1,600 nautical miles.

MAIORA Exuma 35

With the exclusion of CBI Navi which is targeting an even more specific clientele destined to long lasting cruises away from Mediterranean waters, “Lady Nina” sports explorer yacht features such as the presence of an ample lateral garage which can be flooded to host the owner and guests in a six metre long tender while the crew can deploy a second 3 metre boat to commute with.

MAIORA Exuma 35

The organisation of the interiors developed with the owner to optimize the level of comfort consisted in removing where possible the barriers between visiting guests and the surroundings and to enhance contact among the guests with one another and with the crew. For this reason the helm controls station is situated in the bow along the main deck to which the captain has immediate direct access from his lodgings.

A second helm controls station is placed along the lower deck as an integral part of the saloon and is dedicated to the owner’s use since he plans to steer the yacht himself. This area can double into something else since it is to be equipped with an opening roof top, lateral window like ports than can open and close at the push of a button and an opening/closing stern door and more.

MAIORA Exuma 35

This allows the 45 square metres of closed space to expand into the open linking the interiors to the exteriors. The ample cut glass see through areas are common on each deck flooding the interiors with loads of natural light. These are designed to create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere all round thanks to black walnut essences with wengé finishes contrasting the oak ceiling panels. The main deck layout envisages a living room area enriched by a piece of furniture lined in Ardesia and two cellars in which to store a choice of wines and a precious collection of Tequila, a dining area and a galley.

MAIORA Exuma 35

The owner’s suite is also situated along this deck and features see through cut glass floor to ceiling panels. The guest cabins are situated along the lower deck as follows: two doubles, one twin with extra bed and another large suite like the owner’s. The crew’s quarters are independent with a separate galley and can host up to five members. The exteriors are all by Paola Lenti. For further information: Maiora

Join us as we explore the cutting-edge technology, luxurious design, and dual personalities that define this remarkable superyacht. Continue reading to discover the hidden marvels beneath the surface of Lady Nina’s sleek exterior.

There are superyachts that can go fast. And there are superyachts that can go really fast. Push forward the throttles on Maiora Yachts’s 115-foot Lady Nina and the boat morphs from laid-back, family cruiser to a hard-charging speed machine capable of a 40-mph top speed.

Her secret? A wave-slicing, fast-planing hull that rides on top of the water rather than pushing through it like a typical displacement yacht. That, and triple 1,925 hp Caterpillar C32 turbodiesels mated to Swedish MJP waterjets.

Lady Nina is the first in Maiora’s composite-hulled 35 Exuma series and was built for a South American owner living on Florida’s East Coast, who was moving up from a go-fast AB. The second 35 Exuma, Pesa II, was delivered this summer, but with a very different interior design. A third is currently being fitted out.

Contributing to the yacht’s relaxed vibe is the owner’s choice of furniture. Most are freestanding pieces from B&B Italia, Lema Maxalto, and Zimmer+Rohde, while the interior finishes include wenge and oak, walnut and slate, and Italian Dedar upholstery.

One especially novel feature is the flood-able garage that’s big enough to hold a 21-foot Williams Dieseljet 625 tender, while a high-lifting section of the rear deck raises-up to reveal a second garage for Lady Nina’s collection of water toys, plus an 11-foot RIB.

Russian, Central & East European Art and Textiles

Drawnground:  pamela smith - writer and speaker, vologda lace.

6 March 2014

Our river trip in May 2013 took us through the Vologda oblast (region). We made a stop to visit the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery .  Unfortunately it was a cold, dull and drizzly day – the only dreary day we had on the trip – and I didn’t take any photographs there.

What the name ‘Vologda’ brings to mind to me is lace – Vologda being probably the most famous centre of lace-making in Russia. (Yelets in Orel province is also an important centre.) I know very little about the technique of making lace (more about embroidery and printed textiles), though I have quite a few examples in my own collection of Russian textiles. Lace features in many styles of historical Russian dress, in all layers of society.

From Russian Bobbin Lace : ‘There are two main types of lace, namely needlepoint lace, made with a needle, and bobbin (or pillow) lace – the traditional type of lace-making in Russia. Bobbin lace is made on a pillow, to which the parchment or paper pattern is pinned. A number of threads, with a pair of bobbins attached to each, are tied to the pins, and the bobbins are moved from side to side to form a twist, a braid, or a clothlike fabric.

In turn, there are two types of bobbin lace. The first is straight lace, made on a stationary pillow and worked in one direction as a single piece, pattern and ground together. The second is part lace, which, as its name suggests, is made in a number of small pieces, afterwards hooked or sewn together, or linked by separately worked tie-bars (or brides ) or mounted on a network ground.’

The museum of lace in the city of Vologda features in a slideshow on the russiatrek.org blog , and some contemporary lacemakers explain their craft on a ‘Russia Today’ video .

The patchwork designs used throughout the branding of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics drew on motifs from many different Russian crafts, including Vologda lace.  Have a look at the website of Bosco , the supplier who devised the look. Click on ‘Look of the Games’ to find more about all these crafts.

Bibliography:

There are lots of books about lace in Russian but here are a few in English:

Russian Bobbin Lace . Valeria Faleyeva. Aurora Art Publishers, Leningrad, 1986

Russian Lace Patterns . Anna Korableva & Bridget M Cook. Batsford, London, 1996

Russian Embroidery and Lace . L Yefimova & R Belogorskaya. Thames & Hudson, London, 1987 (also published in Russian by Izobrazitelnoye Iskusstvo, Moscow, 1982)

Two more general books, which mention Russian lace:

Antique Lace: Identifying Types and Techniques . Heather Toomer. Schiffer, Atglen PA, 2001

Lace: The Elegant Web . Janine Montupet & Ghislaine Schoeller. Abrams, New York, 1990

Vologda has some astonishing sights.

The provincial city of Vologda (300 miles north of Moscow) attracts with its fairy-tale atmosphere, and has many stunning places to visit.

The Vologda Kremlin.

The Vologda Kremlin.

The white-stone kremlin in Vologda’s center was founded in the mid 16th century, and is one of the city’s most popular sights. The kremlin has the former Bishop's house, where the local treasury was kept, the Resurrection Cathedral and the St. Sophia bell tower. On the high bank of the Vologda River you can see the monumental St. Sophia Cathedral – the city’s first stone church, which was built by Ivan the Terrible.

Near Kremlin Square is a house museum dedicated to Varlam Shalamov, the author of Kolyma Tales . This is where he was born and lived until 1924.

Another remarkable place on Kremlin Square is Russia’s only Museum of Lace. Vologda lace is famous around the globe, and the museum exhibits pre-1917 clothing, as well as canvases with images of Soviet leaders and modern festive decorations. Read more about Vologda lace.

The Vologda Region is famous for folk crafts: needleworks , ceramics, and woodcarving. Local masters decorate their houses with carved fences, and one such preserved building became the Reznoi Palisad Center of Folk Crafts. Now, it’s not only an exhibition of ancient crafts but also an active place for meeting local craftsmen.

3. Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery

Founded in the late 14th century, the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery (80 miles north of Vologda) is one of Europe’s largest monasteries, and its walls are more than two kilometers long. The citadel is located on Lake Siverskoye. Ivan the Terrible visited the monastery many times and he even thought to spend the rest of his days here. In Soviet times, the monastery became a museum, and its main task is to preserve the site’s legacy and buildings.

Ferapontovo village (about 75 miles north of Vologda) is located on a bluff with a sweeping vista of Lake Borodava. Are lovers will enjoy a visit to the Ferapontov Monastery and its luminous frescoes made in 1502 by Andrei Rublev’s follower, Dionisius , in collaboration with his sons. The frescoes are protected from the severe local climate and still retain a rich palette of colors.

What do the famous Ferapontov frescoes look like?

The Ferapontov Monastery is surrounded by lakes and forests that convey the lyrical beauty of the Russian North.

Veliky Ustyug is a town (250 miles northeast of Vologda) that in centuries past was one of the major cities in Russian North. Since 1999, Veliky Ustyug has been the residence of Russia’s Santa Claus – Ded Moroz . The residence (Votchina) is a major tourist attraction in winter holidays, and here any adult can relive his childhood.

Each year, the local post office receives millions of letters from Russian children for Ded Moroz. Children and adults who want to write to Ded Moroz should send letters to:

The town is located on Lake Beloye (White), and in the 15th century a fortress ( kremlin ) was built along with beautiful cathedrals. Thanks to Belozersk’s remote location many of its medieval buildings have been preserved.

In addition to the fortress’ historical significance, its high ramparts offer breathtaking views of the town .

7. Cherepovets

Resurrection Cathedral.

The Vologda Region’s industrial center, Cherepovets (80 miles west of Vologda) is located on the Sheksna River. With a population of 300,000, the city is known as the home of Severstal, one of Russia’s largest industrial enterprises. Nevertheless, the city has more than factories - for example, there are interesting examples of 18th-19th century architecture. The Resurrection Cathedral , the Chapel of St. Nicholas, and the Chapel of St. Philipp Arapskii have been restored and are important cultural and religious institutions.

The Kuskov museum in Totma.

The Kuskov museum in Totma.

Every year on July 26 the small town of Totma (112 miles northeast of Vologda) celebrates Russian America Day at the same time as Fort Ross in northern California. Why? Fort Ross was founded by Totma native Ivan Kuskov, who in 1808 led a voyage to the shores of western America. After several expeditions, Kuskov founded Fort Ross, and the colony organized a school for Russian and Native American families. He married a local woman who converted to Orthodoxy, returning with her to Totma in 1823. In 1990, the house where Kuskov spent the last months of his life became a branch of the Totma Museum Complex, which has documents and items related to the exploration of California. Today, residents of Totma and Fort Ross have a tradition of showing the tolling of the bells in the churches of Totma and Fort Ross via video link.

The town of Ustyuzhna.

The town of Ustyuzhna.

The town of Ustyuzhna (200 miles west of Vologda), located on the Mologa River, is known as one of the oldest centers of Russian metalworking.

The town preserved the historical center rather well, and the most remarkable work of religious art here is the richly decorated Church of the Kazan Icon of the Virgin in the town's main cemetery. It was built in the late 17th century thanks to a donation from the famous merchant, Grigory Stroganov. Another important cultural monument is the 17th century Nativity Cathedral.

10. Vytegra

Vytegra.

The medieval town of Vytegra (190 miles northwest of Vologda) is one of the most visited places in Russia, especially attracting tourists who are interested in wooden church architecture.

The town center has substantial brick buildings dating to the turn of the 20th century, including local government offices, merchant houses, schools and churches. Some are still standing today.
