Project Gleam: The New 165-Metre Wonder from Nauta Yachts

After designing and building the Azzam, the world’s biggest superyacht, Nauta Yachts has just unveiled a new project with similar scope called Gleam.

Like the 180-metre Azzam, the new 165-metre Gleam is being designed at the Milan studio, under the direction of Mario Pedol. Just as spectacular as its brother superyacht, the Gleam is also based on the Light concept that was created six years ago.

It goes without saying that the Gleam’s owner and guests will enjoy the ocean views from a floating palace where no detail has been overlooked. With an impressive surface area and various decks, the Gleam’s front deck alone boasts seven VIP cabins with balconies, two VIP suites, a gym, sauna, pool, massage and beauty salon, steam room, movie theatre, casino and more. And that’s in addition to the main reception hall which is 150 metres square. It’s hard to find something to complain about in a setting like this.

On the lower level, in the rear, there’s an impressive deck that transforms into a dance hall and cocktail bar. The front section is reserved for the crew, with 30 cabins, a kitchen and more. Finally, the fifth deck is for the exclusive use of the owner. There’s a 700 square-metre suite with a sports room, studio, meeting room and private relaxation platform. Oh, and then there’s the fold-away staircase for easy access to the water, two garages, five elevators and a heliport.

This massive vessel is equipped with eight generators that deliver 14,000 kW to the diesel-electric engines. Its top speed is 20 knots and cruising speed is 18 knots.

Apparently, some people have the means to enjoy to sea in genuine style.

165m Design Could Become Sister Ship to Azzam

GLEAM’s design emphasizes these priorities by enhancing outdoor living through open aft decks, side decks and the use of glass, much of which will open directly to the ocean and its utopian lifestyle, which is what yachting is essentially about. After developing the exterior of the 180m Azzam, which when she was built, placed her firmly atop the ranking for the world’s largest yachts, Nauta received universal recognition for the design.

Nauta’s light concept, conceived six years ago, has become its signature on all superyachts that they design and is based on a similar trend in civil architecture that emphasizes interior/exterior connection and harmony, breathtaking views, clean lines and extraordinary outdoor spaces. Blending of these elements results in elegance and visual lightness.

GLEAM’s superstructure spans half of her hull’s length with four decks over her main deck shortened harmoniously to form perfectly balanced volume ascending in a pyramid that to the mast that stand precisely on the hull’s vertical line. Each of the higher decks is devoted to specific functions and has large windowed areas that emphasize the concept. GLEAM will have seven deck in total.

The front half of the main deck is dedicated to two VIP suits and seven VIP cabins, each with a private fixed balcony. Amidships is the spectacular 150 sqm. lobby while the aft area of the main deck is houses a large pool that links to a health and entertainment area on the deck below that includes a gym, sauna, hammam, massage room, beauty parlor, cinema and  casino. Further aft is a 150 sqm. open teak deck followed by en enclosed sea lounge which can be used as a dancing hall with disc jockey console and cocktail bar.

An opening transom features folding stairs and two side-opening terraces further enhance contact with the sea. Two boarding lobbies are located amidships where guests and crew can board tenders. On the lower deck, two garages house a submarine and a fast Rib. The front area is dedicated to crew cabins, mess and galley.

Forward on the upper deck are six guest cabins that are connected to a guest observation deck with sunbathing area that faces the bow and is surrounded with spectacular windows that provide a 180º view. A spiral staircase links to the VIP suites and cabins below. The aft indoor area houses another entertainment and relaxation area with a piano, an open dining room and sitting corners.

Deck Five is dedicated to the owner with a 700 sqm. suite that features a sleeping room, gym, studio, 36 sqm. conference room, private dining room,  salon connected to an open relaxation area equipped with sofas and chaise lounges. The sundeck has an open front devoted to sunbathing and complemented by a pool. The interior houses a panaoramic lounge and bar.

A total five elevators, three reserved solely for guests and two for the crew, service GLEAM. Total area for owners and guests is approximately 2,040 sqm. and an additional 1,140 sqm. for the crew. Eight generators provide 14,000 kW to diesel-electric propulsion motors that provide quiet and vibration-free navigation up to 20 knots. Range is 6,000 miles at 15 knots.

As a teenager growing up in the Midwest, Andy Tyska papered his bedroom walls with posters and photographs of classic yachts. Among his collage was a copy of what might be considered the most famous American yachting photograph ever taken: Stanley Rosenfeld’s black-and-white image of two beautiful 12-meter sloops, their spinnakers pulling at their seams. One in hot pursuit of the other.

Little did Tyska know then that one day the leading yacht in that photograph—the 1937 Clinton Crane-designed Gleam—would fall into his hands, and that he would become part of the yacht’s storied history.

“I’d seen her sailing around New England after first visiting here in 1993,” recalls Tyska, who trained as a naval architect under the direction of Ted Hood and later founded Bristol Marine in 1998. “I didn’t realize until I was going through photo albums and ran across a photo of my childhood bedroom that she was included in the collage.  Those pictures on my wall made an impression on me and drove me to where I am now, working in the marine industry in New England.”

Tyska partnered with one of the yacht’s former captains and marine industry veteran, Dennis Gunderson, to purchase Gleam in fall 2020. “We had known each other for years in the industry, and he has a really strong personal connection to the boat, like many who have been touch by her beauty and grace.” Tyska adds. 

First thing they did was sail her up to the Bristol Marine Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor, ME, where she could undergo the first phase of her restoration.  Gleam joins a fleet of pedigreed classic yachts under the care of the shipwrights and skilled technicians at Bristol 

Marine facilities that include Aphrodite, Belle Adventure, Ticonderoga, Ernestina-Morrissey, Blackwatch, Fawan, Ruweida, and Burma. 

This winter, Tyska and Gunderson have mostly been focused on cosmetic items for the restoration, along with some modifications to the deck hardware layout and a few critical items to maintain her USCG certification. Then, over the next three to five years, Tyska and Gunderson will be targeting other areas of the boat to keep her in top condition. 

Tyska is quick to acknowledge that Gleam is in remarkably good condition considering her age, thanks in great part to her former owners. “I can’t talk about Gleam without recognizing the significant efforts by Bob Tiedemann and Elizabeth (Tiedemann) DuPont and the commitment they made to her early on in preserving her. In addition to carrying on Tieddemann’s passion for classic yachts, Tyska looks forward to continuing Gleam’s tradition on the water. “We want to continue the legacy of Clinton Crane to promote the enjoyment of classic yachts. Dennis and I will be racing her, and we also hope to reconnect Gleam with the incredible amount of people that have had a relationship with her over the years through chartering and racing while introducing her to new admirers as well.”

Yacht Rental Terms: We abide by USCG and Bareboat charter policies: our legal capacity is no more than 12 guests not including crew members. Captain/Crew, if you elect the ones we provide, are paid by you, but their per hour fee is included in the pricing on this GetMyBoat platform. We must allow you the option to hire your own captain if you so elect, but if you do so, this is at your own expense and must follow under experience/ insurance guidelines. Because of food and beverage laws, we are unable to provide any, but alcohol, food, and drinks are permitted on board at your own risk/liability. Gratuity of at least 10% is recommended at the end of your charter. The Lazzara Skylounge charters rain or shine. Only in the event of inclement weather that poses a safety risk will we cancel or reschedule a reservation. Renter must be at least 21 years of age. A photocopy of the renter's ID and eSign bareboat contract must be completed prior to scheduled charter date. Max capacity is 12 guests per USCG regulations. Smoking, vapes, illegal drugs, red wine elicit behavior of any kind is prohibited and will lead to forfeiture of Charter.

Gleam, US-11

Built in 1937 according to the International Third Rule.

1937-1942: Clinton Crane built Gleam for his own use using an innovative method of tank testing against Seven Seas . She had a new lead keel in 1939 and was also dismasted that year. Her mast was replaced with one built for Vim . Crane shared the findings of his extensive testing with Olin Stephens and Francis Herreshoff. She won the Astor Cup (NYYC) in 1937.

1943-1952: Gleam was purchased by B. Devereaux Barker and B. Devereaux Barker Jr. of Marblehead, MA– they installed an engine in 1940. In 1950 John N. Potter of Darien, CT purchased Gleam , renamed her Charlotte II and replaced her engine.

1953-1975: W. Mahlon Dickerson purchased, restored her name to Gleam and brought her home to Oyster Bay, NY.  She was the trial horse for Vim and Sceptre in the 1958 America’s Cup and for Gretel in the 1962 Cup.

1975-2019: Robert Tiedemann (now deceased) purchased Gleam and brought her to Newport, RI. He gave her a full restoration and a new engine. Tiedemann is often credited for the rebirth of the 12 Metre Fleet in Newport, RI as we know it today. After his death, his widow Elizabeth Tiedemann DuPont continued to charter US-11 through their company Seascope Yacht Charters in Newport, RI.

2020: Gleam was purchased by Andy Tyska of Bristol Marine who will undertake a major refit at their Boothbay Harbor (ME) Shipyard. During the winter of 2020 her hull will be repaired enabling her to sail in Maine waters during the summer of 2021. The following winter (2021), she is set to receive a new deck and a restoration of her elegant interior. If all goes to plan, she will return Newport for the 2022 sailing season.

Gleam was designed by the famous naval architect, Clinton Crane, as his private yacht. Built in 1937, of double planked mahogany, the vintage 12 meter  Gleam was influential in the development of the longest running class of yachts used in the America’s Cup. The legendary lineup of helmsmen, Briggs Cunningham, Lee Loomis and Harold Vanderbilt, became so fond of Gleam that they built their own 12 Meters to join the class.

Gleam has a storied racing career that began with her 1937 Astor’s Cup win and carried through later decades when she was used as the trial horse for Vim & Sceptre for the 1958 America’s Cup and then for Gretel in the 1962 America’s Cup.

Gleam was brought to Newport, RI in 1975 by the late Robert Tiedemann who gave her a full restoration and offered her for charter. In 2020, she went through another extensive refit. She’s now back in New England waters and is available for charter through America’s Cup Charters.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

For over 20 Years, the current owner had an open check book to continually upgrade and lovingly care for this amazing yacht 

Over 250 Irwin 52’s and 54’s were built. First introduced in 1976, The Irwin 52 quickly became the  most  popular cruising center cockpit sailboat on the market.  In 1988, the boat evolved into the Irwin 54 with a major redesign of the hull, deck and interior. “Patience“ is one of the last Irwin 54’s and possibly the best ever built.

“Patience” was ordered new by her original owner in 1989 and commissioned in 1990. The concept was to utilize the basic clever design and create a vessel of not just outstanding beauty, but also a yacht that is flawlessly executed and engineered to a standard normally seen only in larger vessels. The spectacular result is not only a "go anywhere" yacht, but also one of absolute luxury, total privacy and short-handed style.

The second owner purchased "Patience" for a two year Caribbean cruise and then sold  her to the  current owner. Current owner has owned this boat for the past 20 years!

Interior Description

“Patience” sleeps six persons in three private cabins, excluding the main salon, with optional sleeping space in workroom.

She has a stunning interior that really has to be seen to be fully appreciated. (See the 3D Virtual Tour) She was designed and then customized around luxury, quality and functional elegance. The interior is truly gorgeous and maintained in show condition at all times.

Starting forward is VIP Stateroom with centerline queen berth.

Next aft to starboard is the Guest Cabin with a double berth.

The Guest Head is to port and features a separate shower stall and a separate door to the Vip Stateroom and another door that opens into the hallway. 

The huge raised Main Salon features large fixed ports, offering a panoramic view outside. To starboard is another  “L” shaped settee and dining table. Next aft is a desk and breakfast bar.To port is a  “L” shaped settee followed by a large Chart Table. Here is located the electronic switches for AC and DC Systems. A large flatscreen TV is located above and navigation instuments are outboard. An eight bottle wine cooler is located below.

Next aft and down two steps is the Galley. The galley on “Patience” will appeal to any cruising gourmet and is equivalent in size to what you'd expect on boats much larger. The galley provides ample counter space, cabinets and drawers for storage. Opposite the galley is the separate laundry room and complete walk-in workshop.

Across from the galley is the Workshop and Laundry Room. The work bench has cushions to create another berth. The captain and crew are kept in clean clothes by using the full size Miele, 220V, high quality washer and dryer.

The Owner's Stateroom features a centerline queen berth, large hanging locker and numerous drawers and cabinets.

The en-suite Owner's Head has a separate stall shower/tub.

The current owner decided to remove the Hood Stoway mast and upgrade the mast and rigging to a custom Seldon mast with a hydraulic furling system around 2010. A lot of thought by the experienced owner went into making “Patience” easy to sail by a couple and enhance the performance.

Oranienbaum (Lomonosov)

Still commonly known by its post-war name of Lomonosov, the estate at Oranienbaum is the oldest of the Imperial Palaces around St. Petersburg, and also the only one not to be captured by Nazi forces during the Great Patriotic War. Founded by Prince Menshikov, Peter the Great's closest adviser, the Grand Palace is one of the most opulent examples of Petrine architecture to have survived to the present, although until very recently the palace itself has been greatly neglected. After Menshikov's death, Oranienbaum passed to the state, and was used as a hospice until, in 1743, it was presented by Empress Elizabeth to her nephew, the future Peter III. Peter made Oranienbaum his official summer residence and transformed one corner of the park, ordering the construction of a "Joke" Castle and a small citadel manned by his Holstein guards. This peculiar ensemble, called Petershtadt, was mostly demolished during Pavel's reign. Antonio Rinaldi, the Italian-born architect who also designed the Grand Palace at Gatchina and the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg, was commissioned by Peter in 1758 to build a modest stone palace next to the fortress, and this has survived.

After Peter was deposed, Rinaldi was commissioned by Catherine the Great to build the Chinese Palace, in the Upper Park, as her official country residence. However, Catherine spent little time at Oranienbaum, which she had grown to hate during her marriage to Peter, and by the end of the 18 th century the estate had been turned into a Naval Cadet College. The palace became an Imperial residence again in the reign of Alexander I, and retained that status until the Revolution, when it was immediately opened as a museum. Although never captured by the Germans, Oranienbaum was bombarded during the war and, while the Grand Menshikov Palace survived intact, its restoration was given much lower priority than the more famous estates at Peterhof and Tsarskoe Selo. Today, the small but elegant park has been almost completely restored, while the full restoration of the palaces has finally gained momentum over the last decade.
