Rising Sun superyacht

Iconic yachts: Inside the design journey of the 138m Lürssen superyacht Rising Sun

Rising Sun was the last yacht that ever came from designer Jon Bannenberg’s drawing board (literally, as the office was then an almost CAD-free zone), and one that he was destined never to see completed.

To a degree, Rising Sun represented a back-to-basics approach and a final opportunity to work with Lürssen’s lean destroyer-type hull, which had been the platform 30 years earlier for Carinthia V and Carinthia VI (now named The One ). The similarities ended there. Rising Sun experimented with extensive use of structural glass for a clean and stripped-down profile that involved Lürssen and its sub-contractors working on engineering and systems.

Jon Bannenberg’s appointment to design Rising Sun came out of the blue after Larry Ellison had commissioned a number of studies from different designers. None seemed to have the impact that he wanted until Jon Bannenberg unveiled his initial study model one morning in London over a couple of lattes. Things moved quickly after that, and they reached an agreement in two emails without even a hint of a lawyer being involved. LE120 became the project’s codename but it did not need Enigma codebreaking skills among the yachting community to work out the vessel’s length and who had commissioned her.

Jon Bannenberg worked on many study models in the early months, including a colossal version that was shipped to Lürssen and used for an initial presentation meeting with the principal sub-contractors. The basic form did not change much from his first drawing. Among the spectacular concepts was a suspended, tube-like walkway through the main machinery spaces for visitors to see exactly what drove her at speeds of 30 knots, and an exposed Z frame structure separating the tender launching areas. This was monumental in scale but sculptural and simple to fabricate.

The exposure of structure was one of the overarching themes of his Rising Sun design – no more clearly apparent than in the web frames of the superstructure, into which the full-height glass panels were set. The initial intent was to have these in raw finished aluminium, but this subsequently got ‘value engineered’ into a metallic paint finish.

His general arrangement layouts of Rising Sun gave spacious guest cabins direct access to the exterior side decks, protected from the weather by 45-degree indents in the superstructure. There was so much space to play with that the top deck was given over entirely to owner use, while a double-height cinema was embedded like the stone of an avocado, with the corridor arcing gently around it. And, of course, a basketball court was obligatory.

All in all, Jon Bannenberg’s original concept for Rising Sun survived relatively intact after his death. The yacht divided opinion, like many of his designs, and her sheer scale – eventually growing to 138 metres – made even Larry Ellison pause for thought. But she is certainly a Bannenberg original, and somehow neatly completed the circle that started with Carinthia V and Lürssen some 30 years earlier.

The Rising Sun is a motor yacht which was designed by Jon Bannenberg and was built and constructed in 2004 by German shipbuilder Lürssen. The yacht reportedly costs $200 million to build. The yacht was built at Lürssen’s Bremen shipyard for the founder and CEO of Oracle Corporation, Larry Ellison. It was delivered to Ellison in June 2004. Since 2010, David Geffen has owned the yacht. Geffen bought half of the share of the 454-foot megayacht in 2007 and decided to buy the yacht in full in 2010 which totaled his payment for $590 million. The exact estimated value of the yacht is still unclear but as of 2019, the yacht was valued for $300 million. After Geffen bought it, he had the yacht refitted in the period of just six months.

The motor yacht has a tonnage of 7,841 GT and has a length of 138 m that is about 452 ft 9 in. It utilizes the installed power of the diesel engine of 4 × MTU 20V 8000 M90 with 36,000 kW. It was built with steel hull and an aluminum superstructure that includes a teak deck. It also features an anchor stabilizer which provides the people on board an exceptional comfort. Unlike some other luxury yachts, the Rising Sun is not available for private charter.

https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/532058143448158436/

The superyacht has about eighty two rooms and has the ability to accommodate about 18 guests and 55 staff and crew members. The eighteen guests can comfortably stay in the nine suites at the yacht which can ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience . The massive yacht even has a basketball court on board. The top deck is entirely dedicated to the owner which includes a double-height cinema. Aside from the basketball court, there is also a wine cellar and a movie theater which can be found among the eighty two rooms of the yacht.

The interior design of the yacht was designed by design house Seccombe Design. The exterior design on the other hand was designed by Bannenberg & Rowell and was refitted in 2011 after David Geffen has requested for it. The builders of the Rising Sun have experimented with the extensive use of some structural glass that gives off a clean and stripped-down profile for the yacht. This includes the builders extensively working on the engineering and systems of the yacht. The exposure of the yacht’s structure is one of the overarching themes in the superyacht’s design.

There is a reason why a lot of famous celebrities and public figure enjoy hanging out at the superyacht. For the added comfort and entertainment, there is a sauna, underwater lights, beauty salon, elevator and gym at the superyacht. It offers the luxuries of the land space on a secluded area which gives them the privacy that they need. With the use of the 45-degree indents in the yacht’s superstructure, the guests are also protected from the weather.

The yacht has so much space that the guests can roam around and just party. The top deck was designed entirely for the owner’s entertainment. The guests can also enjoy the double-height cinema which was embedded just like the stone of the avocado.

A Closer Look at the $200 Million Rising Sun Superyacht

There are a few different categories of yachts in the world. As a yacht enthusiast you might hear a few different terms being thrown around in the descriptions, such as Super yacht up to 100 feet in length or Mega yacht up to 300 feet. These are the larger water craft and there is even a giga yacht which are those that are over 300 feet in length. With this in mind, the Rising Sun, which is often referred to as a Super yacht far exceeds the parameters set for the classification, so if we’re going to be particular about the classification, we’d call it a Giga yacht. However it’s categorized, the Rising Sun is one of the most amazing private yachts afloat and we’re going to take a closer look at the features which make this multi-million dollar ship so special.

Rising Sun Yacht built by Lurssen: A Celebrity Choice

This yacht has hosted some of the most celebrated personalities in the film and record industry as well as the political arena. Barack and Michelle Obama were seen vacationing on the Rising Sun in 2017, and it’s also hosted Hollywood stars including Oprah Winfrey , Julia Roberts , Leonardo DeCaprio, Tom Hanks and others. The co-founder of Dreamworks, film producer and record executive David Geffen is the owner of the Rising Sun, which ranks as the 9th largest yacht in the world, currently. Depending on which source you consult, the cost to build this giant is estimated to be $200 million and some have it as high as $400 million but we believe that the base cost was the latter and the extra figures come from upgrades .

The history of the Rising Sun

The Rising Sun is the commissioned craft of its first owner Larry Ellison, who partnered with David Geffen and is the current CEO of the Oracle Corporation. He ordered the building of the ship from the German shipbuilding company Lürssen . The Rising Sun is the design of Jon Bannenberg, who has since passed away. The ship was delivered to Mr. Ellison in 2004, who shared ownership with David Geffen until 2010, when he decided that it was too large, so he sold his share to Geffen, who is now the sole owner of the yacht and Ellison bought a smaller yacht.

Specifications and details

The Rising Sun yacht is constructed of a strong aluminum superstructure with a displacement steel hull and teak decks, in accordance with Germanischer Lloyd classification society rules. The ship requires 4 MTU 12,061 horsepower diesel engines to propel it though the water. The average cruising speed is 26 knots and the top speed of the ship is 30 knots. To make the yacht more comfortable and safe in rough waters, it is fitted with zero speed stabilizers for times when she is at anchor. The Rising Sun measures 453.97 ft in length with a 62.34 ft beam, a draft of 16.08 ft and gross tonnage of 7841 tons. The exterior was designed by Bannenberg & Rowel and the interior by Seccombe Design. It was built by Lurssen and refit in 2004 and 2011. At the time of the sale it was the 6th largest yacht in the world, but other new superyachts have displaced it to the 9th position.

Luxury amenities

It takes a crew of 45 to maintain and operate this massive vessel and they are housed in 30 cabins. The guests are housed in 8 cabins which can accommodate between 16 and 18 guests comfortably. The yacht has been designed with more than 8,000m² of living space, allowing for larger gathering areas as well as plenty of places to find privacy from the crowd of guests. There are a total of five decks with 82 rooms aboard the yacht. Some of the luxury amenities include a spa and gym so guests don’t need to miss out on their daily workout routines. The Rising Sun is also quipped with a lift/elevator to take guests between the five decks. For practicality so guests/owners can come and go from any location, there is also a helipad on board. For fun in the sun there is a swimming pool as well as underwater lights for excellent illumination, and a sauna for relaxation. The ship also features air conditioning throughout the 82 rooms so guests can achieve the optimal room temperatures, even on hot days at sea, and there is also a Tender Garage, as well as a Cinema large enough to accommodate all guests for entertainment.

Final thoughts

The Rising Sun has only had two owners since it was built in 2004. Co-owners Larry Ellison and David Geffen shared it for a period of time, then Ellison sold his share to Geffen who is now the sole owner. The yacht was once the sixth largest yacht in the world, but is still considered a wonder coming in at ninth place. It’s packed to the hilt with luxury amenities and there is plenty of space aboard with five decks and 82 rooms. The ship which cost $200 million to build is now valued somewhere between $3 and $4 million, and it has only increased in value with the passage of time and no doubt numerous upgrades to suit the preferences of the owner. It’s served as the vessel that provides a source of recreation for some of the most famous people in the world including some of our most beloved Hollywood stars and even a former president and first lady. The Rising Sun is truly one of the most magnificent yachts that has ever been created, and those who are fortunate enough to be invited on board are in for a top notch luxury experience.

THE sinking of the Bayesian yacht on Monday left a trail of devastation amid a frantic search for survivors.

The £30million vessel, which had 22 people on board, was swallowed up by the sea off the coast of Italy after a freak weather accident , leaving six passengers unaccounted for.

The Bayesian capsized after a freak weather accident, causing it to sink within minutes

Tragically, the bodies of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , 59, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were recovered earlier today and identified by authorities.

Five bodies have been found but only four recovered, while one person remains missing.

Other passengers still unaccounted for include Morgan Stanley boss Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda.

The body of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan cook who was working on the boat was recovered near the vessel. Meanwhile, 15 people were rescued with most clinging to small life rafts.

Bayesian hostesses reveal fear as yacht vanished beneath waves in minutes

Lynch was onboard the yacht to celebrate after he was acquitted in a fraud trial in the United States.

Bayesian had been docked 300metres off the coast before a tornado on the water also known as a waterspout hit following thunderstorms in nearby Palermo.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Captain Karsten Borner of the Sir Robert Baden Powell told how his vessel managed to save the survivors who made it to a lifeboat.

He recalled being near the storm as it approached and how his crew rallied to aid those in distress.

"A moment later, she was gone," he said, adding that the survivors told them they "were sunk in two minutes."

Investigators and rescuers are now working around the clock to piece together exactly what happened and retrieve any possible survivors.

The disaster has led to many urgent questions about the sequence of events that led to this maritime tragedy and the potential oversights that may have contributed to the possible loss of lives.

Why did the vessel sink when others stayed afloat?

The Bayesian was moored 300 metres off the coast before the weather accident

The circumstances that led to the vessel sinking has been one of the most debated questions in the tragedy.

Some experts believe the yacht's 250-foot aluminium mast may have caused it to overturn and sink. The mast broke during the waterspout.

According to nautical expert Gino Ciriaci, the yacht's staggering weight may have contributed to its rapid sinking.

He told the Italian website Corriere Della Sera that a mast can break when a vessel encounters "particularly extreme conditions."

He added that the boat's movements would have been much more erratic without the mast and sails to mitigate its motions.

Some experts also say this is the reason why the Bayesian sank while other vessels managed to stay afloat.

Sam Jefferson, editor of the magazine Sailing Today said: "I would have said that the boat got hit very hard by the wind, it was pinned over on its side."

Were the access hatches closed before disaster?

Authorities are investigating whether the access hatches were closed before disaster struck

Investigators are probing whether hatches left open were a contributory factor to the yacht's sinking.

An expert at the scene told Reuters that one of the earliest aims for investigators was to establish whether the crew did not close access hatches before disaster struck.

With temperatures above 33 degrees, they may have been left open for air circulation.

Sam Jefferson said: "I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that."

Specialists in yachting have said that access hatches that are open can cause vessels to fill with water and sink quickly.

Prosecutors from Termini Imerese, a town nearby are said to have opened an investigation into the case.

According to The Telegraph, they will consider whether there is enough evidence to charge any of the crew members with criminal offences.

Ambrogio Cartosio, the chief prosecutor of Termini Imerese, is set to interview the 15 survivors of the disaster. They will also work closely with emergency workers and coast guard divers.

The UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch has also sent a team of investigators to help ascertain exactly how the tragedy unfolded.

Was it safe to be moored there?

While some reports indicate there were no bad conditions forecast, the Italian coast guard claims otherwise

Many have wondered if the Bayesian was safe to dock in the area following reports that Palermo was hit by a thunderstorm.

According to Boat International: "Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast."

However, the Italian coast guard has said that bad weather had been forecast but the weather conditions were even worse than predicted.

Prosecutors are said to be investigating whether adequate preparations were made for the storm, including activating features that add extra stability in the event of bad weather.

On Tuesday, Luca Mercalli, the president of the Italian Meteorological Society, said they would also be looking into why the passengers weren't woken and instructed to wear life jackets.

Why was there little damage to the boat?

Marco Tilotta, who has been coordinating rescuers, said the yacht was "practically intact"

Although the Bayesian capsized and was found on its side, Marco Tilotta, a diver from Vigili del Fuoco di Palermo who is coordinating the search and rescue, told Italian media that the yacht was "practically intact".

Other experts have described how the whirlwind was so extremely violent that it caused the boat to tilt with the edge of the deck submerged underwater.

This resulted in water entering the boat, ultimately causing it to sink.

A nearby boat, the Sir Robert, managed to come away from the incident without any damage. Its captain, Karsten Bornerhas, has spoken about how he worked to stabilise his vessel amid the tempest.

He also said he managed to steer it clear away from the Bayesian as it sank.

Lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda were missing

What caused the freak weather?

Waterspouts are like tornadoes over water, forming during storms. They can be dangerous for boats because they bring strong winds and waves.

If a waterspout hits a boat, the powerful winds can push it sideways or even lift parts of it, making the boat unstable.

This sudden force can cause the boat to tip over or capsize, especially if the boat is small or navigating rough waters.

Waterspouts can have devastating consequences on vessels

Maritime experts say the waterspout that affected the Bayesian may have hit without any warning signs and may well have been caused by rising sea temperatures - as the surface water heated to almost 30 degrees.

Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said: "Looking at the extreme weather, if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as a black swan event.

"And if the waterspout ends up dumping a load of that water on board the vessel, that’s going to cause significant damage."

According to the BBC, an analysis of tornadoes and waterspouts recorded in Italy from 2001 to 2016 found 707 waterspouts and 371 tornadoes.

Of these, 25 per cent of the waterspouts made land and became tornadoes.

On Luxurious Ibiza, Essential Workers Are Forced to Live in Tent Cities

The Spanish island fills beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs with wealthy tourists. But its teachers, firefighters and police officers can’t find a place to live.

A man in a black t-shirt and a woman in pink pants stand outside a tent surrounded by trees.

By Benjamin Cunningham

At 1,900 euros a month, the rent was not cheap. But Alicia Bocuñano still felt fortunate to find an apartment on Ibiza at that price. As a taxi driver pulling 16-hour days, Ms. Bocuñano, a single mother who grew up on this Spanish island, figured that a surplus from the busy summer months might be enough to make the rent.

But her would-be landlord wanted six months of rent plus a security deposit up front — close to €14,000, or about $15,300, in one shot. Though not quite legal in Spain’s tightly regulated rental sector, such demands are common on Ibiza, where wealthy tourists fill beachfront hotels and glittering dance clubs while the people who work in those places — not to mention the island’s teachers, firefighters and other essential workers — can’t find a place to live.

In lieu of a new apartment, Ms. Bocuñano, 38, spent a frightening two weeks sleeping in her car, then three months in a tent with her 10-year-old son, Raúl, by her side, before buying a used caravan in June. For a couple of months, she stationed the Caravelair-brand trailer in Can Rova, an ad hoc village of tents, shacks and campers on the outskirts of Ibiza Town, the island’s capital, just behind a dealership selling expensive powerboats. “When we first came here it was cold,” she said. “Like, very cold.”

Tent cities began popping up here in 2023, but they have mushroomed in size and number this year. Can Rova, the largest of three major camps in and around the capital, was home to some 280 people this summer. On a recent July night, six people and a dog were bedding down on the floor in Ms. Bocuñano’s caravan.

Many Can Rova residents said that, with nowhere else to go, they hoped to stay indefinitely. But on July 31, the police made good on a court order to clear the camp, which had been erected on private land. (The owner is currently embroiled in an array of zoning and legal disputes.) Many said they planned to relocate to one of the other camps, even as those sites lacked the electricity, water and perimeter fence that made Can Rova accommodating.

Ms. Bocuñano was detained by the police during the mass eviction, and may face a fine.

In much of the world, homelessness correlates with a lack of work. But not on Ibiza, where the jobs are plentiful and the booming tourism sector depends on itinerant workers (with varying immigration status). Though seasonal labor has long strained the housing supply for a few months each year, the shortage now looks more structural.

“People who work every day to care for their children have no place to live,” Ms. Bocuñano said.

The rise of remote work and a surge in short-term rentals have erased many apartments from the market, compounding existing shortages caused by land-use restrictions on an island prized for its natural beauty, and by poor public policy that followed the burst of Spain’s housing bubble in 2008.

“It is fundamental,” said Carme Trilla, an economist and former director of housing policy for Catalonia, the Spanish region on “the peninsula,” as islanders are wont to say. “By definition they have to live there, and it’s not only price but also availability that is a problem.”

Ibiza’s deepening housing crisis came slowly at first, and then all at once. The island’s brand — “sun, beaches, nightlife,” as one broker put it — blossomed in the 1960s and ’70s as bohemians congregated on this Balearic Island. The flower children gave way to disco, and bell bottoms were pushed off the dance floor in the 1980s and 1990s by rave culture. By the 2000s, Ibiza had secured its reputation as a mecca for electronic music and luxury escapism.

“It is the only place in the world where you can see the top DJs in the world in top venues every night,” said Yann Pissenem, C.E.O. and owner of the Night League, parent company to Ushuaia and Hi, two of the island’s hottest clubs.

The island’s year-round population of 160,000 is double what it was 20 years ago and growing. During peak summer months, more than a million people make merry on the island at any given time, with upscale tourism putting still more pressure on housing.

Ibiza is an extreme example of a larger phenomenon in Spain, where about 12 percent of the gross domestic product comes from tourism. A recent report found that in 306 cities and towns considered tourism draws, rents are an average of 75 percent higher than the national average — the largest gap ever. Already this summer, thousands of protesters have turned up in other vacation spots including Malaga, Mallorca and the Canary Islands to demonstrate against the excesses of tourism.

Ms. Trilla, who now runs Habitat 3, a foundation that works to facilitate subsidized housing, said that on Ibiza, the crisis has been intensified by a new spate of discount airline connections to European capitals, and by more online platforms renting apartments to foreign visitors. The median price for a home on the island is now €558 a square foot — three times the national average and more than double the average in Madrid and Barcelona.

Three-quarters of prospective buyers on Ibiza are looking for a second home, while another 15 percent want an investment property, said Paloma Pérez Bravo, C.E.O. of Sotheby’s International Realty in Spain. So on an island with inadequate housing and limited buildable land, many homes sit vacant for much of the year. And since the pandemic, she added, there’s been more demand from buyers who want to live on the island year-round. “Ibiza is a good investment because the prices never stop rising,” Ms. Pérez said.

On a recent afternoon just before the demolition at Can Rova, residents related stories of crammed studio apartments where people would sleep in shifts on so-called “hot beds” for about €300 a month.

Maria Fernanda Chica, a 34-year-old Colombian who is awaiting working papers, lived in one such apartment while cleaning luxury homes for cash. “I couldn’t cook food when I needed to,” she said of the conditions. “At best I could use the kitchen once per day.”

This summer, she was living in a makeshift structure in Can Rova with her partner and teenage son. Most of the residents there rented plots for between €350 and €450 a month, plus €50 euros for water and another €50 for electricity. The residents were responsible for digging their own septic systems. A good number had built shanties from plywood, shipping pallets, AstroTurf, tarpaulins and other basic materials.

Jonathan Sanchez, 33, and his girlfriend Sandra Velasquez, 41, sleep in a tent among a few dozen others in another informal settlement. Mr. Sanchez, who was born on Ibiza, works construction by day. Ms. Velasquez, a Colombian émigré lacking work documents, works nights cleaning for €7 an hour.

“I don’t even remember the last time I went to the beach,” said Mr. Sanchez on a recent night. His T-shirt said “Ants” — the name of the party that Mr. Pissenem hosts on Saturdays.

The couple charge their mobile phones at bus stops and draw water from a tap in a nearby cemetery. Most of their neighbors are seasonal workers from Morocco who decamp after the summer season. Mr. Sanchez has been in his tent for 14 months. His co-workers have no idea where he lives. “It’s not that I am embarrassed,” he said. “I just don’t want people to feel sorry for me.”

Whenever campers like Mr. Sanchez are forced to move on, the Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s two national police forces, will likely play a role (as they did in the Can Rova eviction). But many of the officers are themselves caught in this housing crisis. At the height of tourist season, there were 17 vacant Guardia Civil positions on Ibiza. Many new recruits avoid work on the island and rotate out when they can find an opening elsewhere in Spain, said Tomas Quesada, a Guardia Civil officer and union representative. Starting salaries are just €1,800 a month, and the monthly €94.63 cost-of-living bonus makes little difference.

“It is leading to the desertification of public services,” Mr. Quesada said. “We have the right to be able to live.”

Nurses and doctors face a similar reality. So do teachers, some of whom commute daily by airplane from other islands to save money. “We don’t have the same level of public services here in Ibiza,” said Joana Tur Planells, a union representative for teachers.

Land will always be limited on a 220-square-mile island, but there is an emerging consensus that government intervention is needed. In the town of Santa Eulària des Riu, where Can Rova was located, City Hall plans to allocate 54,000 square feet of public land for housing construction over the next few years. Policy documents call for increased emphasis on the construction of multifamily dwellings and a crackdown on illegal short-term rentals.

Carmen Ferrer Torres, Santa Eulalia des Riu’s conservative mayor, points to plans to break ground on the construction of 60 smaller rental apartments — a fraction of the units needed to ease the strain.

“These are important, urgent problems with solutions that will take longer than we have,” the mayor said. In the meantime, her party also advocates further liberalizing rental markets, betting that streamlined evictions for scofflaws could free up stagnant housing stock. Ms. Ferrer was on site supporting the July 31 clearance of Can Rova.

But for Ms. Trilla, the housing economist, the big picture solution is clear. “It’s necessary to prioritize public housing for essential workers,” she said, adding that the problem is not just housing but the price of land. Basically, public money is needed to buy private property at market prices.

She pointed to a series of policies in Barcelona, the Catalonian capital, that might ease short-term housing supply, including one that would temporarily loosen zoning rules so officials could break up single-family homes into multiple apartments. Barcelona is also phasing out short-term rentals of the type offered by platforms like Airbnb. They will be virtually banned by 2028.

On the private side, successful business owners like Mr. Pissenem, the club impresario, are wrestling with the crisis. His company has begun helping its seasonal workers find accommodations. “We all need to figure out a way to help the people that hold the island in their hands,” he said.

For now, Ibizans like Ms. Bocuñano wonder where their next home may be. For the first couple of nights after the Can Rova raid, she stayed on a friend’s couch. Her son is staying with her mother on the other side of the island. She was briefly allowed back in to Can Rova to get her personal possessions, including her caravan, but needed to borrow a vehicle to tow it.

From there, she said, “I am going to recover and put the pieces back together.”
