The Big M Casino Cruise

Gambling might not be allowed in South Carolina, but take a 3-mile boat ride off the coast and you’ll exit the coastal state waters. That’s where the fun begins on Myrtle Beach’s casino cruise, The Big “M” Casino .

Sailing out of Little River , North Myrtle Beach’s quaint and historic fishing village, The Big “M” Casino is a 186-foot, state-of-the-art gambling vessel that looks like a floating version of a Las Vegas casino. Featuring a wide selection of table games and slots, the casino cruise brings you close to all the action just three miles off the beautiful Carolina coast.

Since The Big “M” Casino also features a restaurant and open-air bar on the top deck, you can sit outside and watch the sunset or dolphins playing while you enjoy a cocktail or delicious meal. The breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets offer feasts fit for a king and queen while those face cards keep rolling at the tables.

Once the "gambling" sign is lit, it's time to hit the casino for some Blackjack, 3 Card Poker, Craps, Roulette and slot machines. The Big “M” Casino also offers nightly specials like jackpot bonuses and free bingo. Experience the thrill of gaming on morning and evening casino cruises six days each week, Tuesdays through Saturdays, on four- to six-hour tours. South Carolina is known as one of the most restrictive states in terms of gambling. Compared to other neighboring lands, it has no land-based or commercial casinos available within state lines. Instead, it has focused on offering South Carolina casino resorts to make the most out of our international waters' betting experience. ... While casino resorts allow us to play slots and table games at offshore sites, SC gambling laws permit other gambling forms such as charity bingo and the state lottery. Charity bingo is allowed if charitable organizations would operate it.

Are There Indian Casinos in South Carolina?

Due to the SC government's intense political opposition against gambling within its lands, numerous tribes' efforts to establish Indian casinos have failed. South Carolina casino resorts are only allowed to operated, so long as they sail a few miles out into international waters where casino betting is legal.

There are no available racinos within South Carolina lands. Many gambling legislations introduced the legalization of race tracking and betting facilities; however, they were never brought out by the committee. Although the SC government's firm stance against gambling activities, there are still ongoing studies as an attempt to help leaders decide and consider possible economic benefits of legal gambling.

Are There Cruise Ship or Riverboat Casinos in South Carolina?

Cruise gambling is being accepted and practiced in South Carolina. South Carolina casino resorts serve as an alternative for residents looking to have fun with slot games, and even poker tournaments. Some residents prefer cruise casinos as a practical option rather than taking a long drive to a land-based casino in other states.

Expected New Casinos

South Carolina is still discovering possible landing spots for legal gambling. The Palmetto Forum for Gaming Studies is working on numerous studies about the benefits surrounding a possible development of gaming options in potential South Carolina gambling cities. Generally, the existence of gambling towns in South Carolina is achievable in the coming years.

Gambling in South Carolina

South Carolina's restrictive gambling laws have been observed and implemented throughout its entire history. Initially, SC constitution banned all gambling activities within its state lines. However, the Palmetto State did not actively sought ways to ban offshore gambling, which led to the existence of South Carolina's cruise ship casinos.

Gambling Legal Situation in South Carolina

Taxation of winnings.

Lottery winnings are filed and taxed like income in South Carolina. Generally, IRS requires taxes for winnings greater than $5000. More than that, proceeds are also subject to additional state tax. Additionally there is a federal tax rate of 24% that is levied on casino winnings in the US .

South Carolina Gambling Laws

With the prohibitive nature of SC gambling laws, it is advisable to start your betting experience with knowledge about its restrictions. Below are some quick guide on South Carolina gambling laws.

This section covers all forms of gambling activities, which clearly states that unlawful gaming and betting are strictly prohibited. SC law considers someone guilty of illegal gambling if the person plays at a gambling place or keeps a place for table games, cards or dice games, slots for gambling purposes within state lines.

Officers shall have the authority to confiscate and destroy all gaming devices or machines used for gambling purposes within the state lands. This sectioninvolves the seize and destruction oftools of any kind or description that proves a violation of the state gambling laws.

South Carolina has been restrictive on gambling throughout its history. Many tribes and groups fought for the right to keep a gaming place within the state, but SC laws ruled against them.

South Carolina's firm stance on gambling continued in the coming years. Catawba Tribe filed a case to reserve its right to offer video gambling on reservations, but they eventually lose against the state. Later on, South Carolina outlawed social gambling that led to an arrest of 27 people for gambling poker in 2009. Many presented bills and legislation to challenge the federal ban on commercial casinos and sports betting, but none were accepted.

Despite the state's strict gambling laws, gaming cruises start to operate and continue under certain conditions. Cruise ships must depart three miles away from the state land and commence gambling activities in the international waters. With this condition, residents enjoy hundreds of slots and table games in select South Carolina casino resorts.

South Carolina history image

1788 South Carolina started banning all forms of gambling after being an official state.

2000 SC law prohibited the widespread use of video poker machines and approved state lottery.

2003 Officers rejected tribal gambling pacts.

2008 The state legalized gambling cruises.

Upcoming Changes in the Gambling Regulation

Given South Carolina's conservative laws regarding gambling, legalization of any gaming forms within the state lines is still unclear. However, the state is continuously facing pressure from its residents to loosen its strict laws. More than that, Palmetto State has not yet confirmed the complete ban on online gambling. It might result in the possible existence of online gaming and the establishment of land-based casinos within its borders any time soon.

South Carolina Casino Resorts and Trips

For residents who are gambling enthusiasts, booking a trip in South Carolina casino resorts is better than taking a long drive across states to have a great betting experience. Two gambling cruise lines are operating in international waters off the SC coast― Big M and Carnival gambling cruise lines. Both are departing from the state's Little River (near Myrtle Beach).

Casino Resorts

Gambling cruises are major exceptions for the anti-gaming law of South Carolina. Gaming events are only allowed to commence once cruise ships travel to international waters. Below is the list of gambling cruises that depart from SC lands.

South Carolina Casinos - Best Gambling Locations in SC

Read reviews and compare the top casinos in the palmetto state.

Mayuri

When it comes to gambling, South Carolina is widely regarded as one of the strictest states in the country, as you can tell if you read up on US state gambling laws . There are no commercial or land-based casinos in this state, unlike many of its neighbors. Instead, it’s put its efforts into promoting cruise gambling casino resorts in South Carolina so that visitors can make the most of their time when they are in international waters.

South Carolina gambling laws permit other forms of gambling, such as charity bingo and the state lottery, while casino cruise resorts allow gamblers to play slots and table games at offshore sites, such as online casinos for real money . If a nonprofit is in charge of it, bingo for charity is acceptable.

There may not be any SC land-based casinos, but players can look to its neighbor, North Carolina, for two of the B&M casinos in South Carolina.

Top South Carolina Casinos Reviewed

#1 big m casino ship.

In 2008, the Big M Casino Ship made its debut in South Carolina. Casino gambling is currently illegal in the state, so the facility is housed on two ships in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the coast of Little River. Customers can board from within their home states and gamble without leaving the country.

There is no other place to gamble besides these types of South Carolina casinos, which offer every type of game imaginable. There are two different kinds of gambling cruises that guests can select from. Over 170 slot machines and table games (blackjack, craps, and roulette) are available on both decks of these Vegas-style cruise ships, making them suitable for gamblers of all skill levels. There are also Casino poker, poker cash, and poker tournaments available.

Experience all of this and more while taking in stunning views of the Intracoastal Waterway in South Carolina. Tourists should be aware, though, that the ships operate only in federal waters and cannot dock in South Carolina. Furthermore, casino ships do not accept customers 24 hours a day. It’s important to check the cruise schedule before leaving on a trip.

Everyone can have a good time while dining on board. The restaurants provide a large variety of food, including Boar’s Head subs and wraps, as well as beverages like coffee, tea, water, and soda. The wait staff can also assist you in acquiring alcoholic beverages. There is currently no buffet available.

They will gladly bring food down to the main deck and set up a special dining area for those in your party who cannot climb stairs or who have other special needs, ensuring that no one feels left out. If you have any dietary restrictions or other needs, please let the wait staff know before you are seated, and they will do their best to accommodate you.

Big M Casino South Carolina

Tourists can relax and enjoy the show without missing a moment of the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean scenery, which can be seen from every deck. If you’re looking for a place to cool off in the water, you may want to look elsewhere, as there are no pools or pool-centric amenities.

Residents and vacationers alike can enjoy a thrilling evening on the Atlantic thanks to this South Carolina casino cruise. There is no on-board hotel, but there is plenty of accommodation within a short drive of the port. There are a variety of hotels within a short driving distance, including the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, the Days Inn by Wyndham Little River, and the Sleep Inn at Harbour View.

Customers generally had good things to say about this South Carolina casino, mentioning the friendly staff, good gaming selection, and excellent food. This one-of-a-kind casino caters to gamblers and those who simply want to visit for the breathtaking scenery and live performances by local entertainers.

#2 Carnival Ecstasy Casino

The Carnival Ecstasy, launched in 1991, is the line’s second-oldest vessel and one of the top South Carolina Casinos. Although some minor signs of wear and tear are starting to appear due to the passage of time, the crew more than makes up for any physical flaws with excellent service.

In 2017, the ship underwent renovations that included the addition of several popular eateries and bars found on other Carnival vessels. These included Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana, Cantina, Alchemy Bar, and Cherry on Top.

The “big city lights” motif is carried throughout the ship and makes for an approachable grand atrium on Carnival Ecstasy. The cheerful decor encourages cruisers to participate in a wide variety of on-board events, from late-night dance parties to game shows, karaoke, and bingo, something you don’t see very often at South Carolina casinos.

The ship also provides some fun amenities aimed at families. Fun for all ages, Carnival WaterWorks features twisting water slides and a splash pad, while Hasbro: The Game Show invites audience members onto the stage to compete in giant versions of classic board games.

Adults can relax with spa treatments, a drink, or a concert without worrying about their kids while in a supervised child care center. Spending time together as a family can involve anything from games to a leisurely meal at one of the many available restaurants, such as Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast or Swirls.

Lots of bars and nightlife await adults on Ecstasy after dark, as do Punchliner Comedy Shows and Playlist Productions’ large-scale evening performances. The Alchemy Bar is a unique experience, serving “prescription” cocktails that are themselves a show. Bar hopping can be done as you have a choice, like at the BlueIguana Tequila Bar and the Redfrog Rum Bar.

Carnival Ecstasy Casino

You will have access to an extensive selection of 135 slot machines when you go on a cruise with this South Carolina casino, in addition to the fifteen tables that are available to you if you would like a change of pace while you are perusing the offerings on the casino floor, which are very similar in games to what the top online live dealer casinos offer.

There are also 5 poker tables available, with your minimum bet for slot games starting at $0.01. Smoking is allowed only in designated areas, and the casino is open 24/7; however, you have to be over 21 if you are betting with cash. You can double-check the gambling age by state if you would like to find out more.

The Carnival Ecstasy is a smaller ship than some of today’s megaships, but it makes up for its size in service. Passengers have said that even though the ship may not be the most modern of its fleet, it is still lots of fun with excellent food and great value for money. The staff also personalizes your service, going the extra mile.

#3 Carnival Sunshine

The former Carnival Destiny underwent a massive $155 million, 49-day transformation in 2012, emerging as the now-named Carnival Sunshine. Carnival did more than just repaint the ship; they also installed new elevators, air conditioners, generators, and washing machines.

The Sunshine isn’t in the Dream class, but it has many of the same features as the Magic and Breeze, making it one of the busiest Carnival ships: stand-up comedy acts that last 20 minutes, production shows that last 30 minutes, and sushi, burgers, and burritos served at fast food joints.

There are several places to eat and drink, including a burger joint run by the wild-haired Food Network star Guy Fieri, a Mexicali burrito stand where you can have your burrito made to order, and a couple of Caribbean-themed bars called RedFrog and BlueIguana that serve exotic cocktails (rum and tequila, respectively).

In contrast to these shrines to junk food, the ship also features two Asian restaurants: Ji Ji, a truly outstanding restaurant offering pan-Asian cuisine, and Bonsai Sushi, a fee-based, sit-down Japanese restaurant.

Even the decor is drastically different from the old Carnival ships, with Partner Design of Hamburg replacing the gaudy color palettes of former designer Joe Farcus. The color scheme is soft and muted all over the ship, from the public areas to the cabins. The main dining rooms, the Piano Bar, Ocean Plaza, and the corridor on Deck 5, where Fahrenheit 555 is located, are all smoke-free zones.

The overarching impression you’ll be left with is one of a quiet revolution in which style triumphed over tacky decor. You might not even realize you’re on a Carnival ship once you’ve visited the Library Bar, Java Blue, Havana Bar, Fahrenheit 555, or Ji Ji.

Carnival Sunshine

You can choose from a wide variety of over 200 slot machines when you visit this South Carolina casino while at sea, and the ship also has 17 table games should you feel like switching things up while you’re taking in the sights and sounds of the gaming action.

Unfortunately, there are no poker tables, but you can still play all the most popular casino and slot games, such as roulette, blackjack, and craps. There is also no sports betting available, but there is electronic 3-card poker, craps, blackjack, and roulette, similar to those found in all our real-money casino apps . The South Carolina casino is open 24/7, except for Christmas and Easter.

Carnival’s regular customers still flock to the ship when the weather is nice. They are the low-key, sociable, budget-conscious cruisers having a good time with a group. The ship’s unwavering dedication to maintaining a positive and enjoyable atmosphere remains intact.

#4 Big M Casino- Ship II

This luxury yacht provides its guests with the opportunity to experience casino action in the style of Las Vegas, and the best part is that this amenity is available 365 days a year. Because there are so many different promotions, everyone can find something that appeals to them. So, brush up on your sea legs and make your way to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where cruises depart.

The ship is not a cruise liner, so its amenities are very different from what Carnival cruises offer. However, it does make for a perfect day trip for those not wanting to stray too far from home but still yearning to experience the open seas. You can walk around the 7000-square-foot ship freely and take in the sights, depending on the weather.

Similar to Ship I, there are no bars or nightlife as such, but diners at the Big M Buffet will be treated to live music by local performers as they choose from a large variety of delicious starters, main meals, and desserts. Coffee, teas, juices, water, and alcoholic beverages can be ordered from any of the friendly staff.

The casino floor has 248 popular slots that include titles like Colossal Wizards, Forbidden Dragons, and many more. There’s roulette, single- and double-deck blackjack, craps, sic bo, and keno as well, totaling 13 table games. Poker players can also enjoy No Limit Holdem, Fortune Pai Gow, and Crazy 4 Poker. There is no sports betting available onboard.

Big M Casino Ship 2

Port Authority offers parking before you board the South Carolina casino, and customers said that not only was the online reservation quick and simple to make, the staff were incredibly friendly, drinks were reasonably priced, machines were frequently cleaned, and many walked away with a small or medium win on their very first visit. The casino is not open 24/7, however, so be sure to check the times before you go.

South Carolina Casinos In A Neighboring State

As you may have guessed, there are no South Carolina land-based casinos for locals or tourists, only cruise ship or riverboat ones. This means you can either choose to play at South Carolina online casinos or drive to North Carolina and play at the only two Indian casinos, which happen to also be the only two land-based casinos around.

#1 Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel

A new casino and hotel, Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River, has recently opened up just on the outskirts of the town of Murphy. It features a comprehensive assortment of slot machines in addition to all of the most popular traditional casino games. If you want to go outside and explore nature, there are plenty of beautiful local attractions and national parks for you to check out.

The Brasstown Valley Golf Course is a great place to tee off for golf enthusiasts. Or, you could visit the picturesque Cherokee County, known for its abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities, quaint small towns, and historical sites that showcase the region’s rich cultural history. You can relax and let the Motorcoach take care of the driving.

Although there are no bars or nightlife, you can still enjoy some great dining options, such as Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, Moe’s Southwest Grill, or The Landing Cafe. And what more do you need to relax other than golfing or visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park?

Visitors will be able to place bets on a variety of sporting events, including those played at the collegiate and professional levels and those held at off-track horse racing facilities. Caesars Rewards is a loyalty program open to players, and its members are eligible for special discounts and perks. When booking directly with the hotel, you’ll earn five times as many Tier Credits for every dollar spent on room rates and resort fees.

Harrahs Cherokee Valley River Casino and Hotel

There are over 1000 slot machines, 70 table games, and 15 poker tables, all open all day, every day. Sports betting covers all mainstream sports, including baseball, boxing, MMA, hockey, soccer, racing, golf, tennis, cricket, and darts. You will also find many of the table games played on South Carolina betting apps, like electronic blackjack.

#2 Harrah’s Cherokee

It’s not hard to find a nice romantic getaway, and this hotel is proof of that. Each room in the hotel is equipped with a flat-screen TV, air conditioning, and a refrigerator, as well as access to the internet (for a fee). In addition to the excellent gambling options, the hotel also provides a concierge service and room service. Other amenities include a pool, fitness center, and conference facilities.

The hotel is the largest in the state of North Carolina and welcomes pets, providing pet-friendly PetStay Rooms for families with up to two canine members. Casino Games in South Carolina

South Carolina may lack a land-based casino infrastructure, but its cruise ship casinos make up for it by providing every conceivable form of gambling. Video slots and table games like blackjack, craps, and roulette are available to locals.

IGT and other manufacturers of nickel slot machines are responsible for the 770+ slot machines available in the Palmetto State. Of course, you will only find them on the sea, but it’s still worth your time if you’re a slot game fan. Popular titles include:

  • Queen of the Wild II
  • Colossal Wizards
  • Forbidden Dragons
  • Lazer Lock Ice Sapphire

Casino Poker

Over fifty casino poker games may not seem like a lot, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a good selection for fans. You can find games such as:

  • No Limit Holdem
  • Limit Holdem

Poker Cash and Poker Tournaments

Granted, there are some of the smaller cruises that don’t offer any poker tables, but those that do even have tournament games to play:

  • Fortune Pai Gow
  • Sharp Shooter
  • Crazy 4 Poker

A traditional game, but still a favorite. Many US players really enjoy only two types of roulette games, both of which can be played at any SC legal casino:

  • American Roulette
  • European Roulette

Should you play your cards right, your blackjack strategy could offer a return as high as 99.6%. All that SC residents have to do is pick their most preferred game variation, including:

  • Any 2 Card Blackjack
  • Hand-Held Deck
  • Single Deck
  • Double Deck

The roll of the dice is always a thrill, as you are relying purely on Lady Luck. These games are for adrenaline seekers, and you will find some great options at your chosen South Carolina casino, such as:

  • Chuck-A-Luck

Lottery Games

Lottery games are at the heart of most state-controlled gambling, and South Carolina is no different. Here you will find instant scratch-off tickets and lotto draws, and they are only available at the casino itself, not online. They are:

  • 75-Ball Bingo
  • 90-Ball Bingo
  • Daily Lotto Draws

Other Games

If you love the idea of a slot machine combined with card or table games, you can also try these options:

  • Electronic Craps
  • Electronic Blackjack
  • Electronic Roulette
  • Electronic 3-Card Poker

Riverboat Casinos in South Carolina

South Carolina allows and encourages cruise ship gambling. Gamblers in search of table games, slot machines, and even poker tournaments have a few options in the form of South Carolina’s casino resorts. Some locals find it more convenient to gamble on cruise ships than to travel to distant land-based casinos.

Indian Gaming Tribes Around South Carolina

There have been many failed attempts by different tribes to open Indian casinos in South Carolina because of the state government’s strong political opposition to gambling on its territory. In order to legally offer casino gambling, South Carolina requires all casino resorts to sail at least three miles into international waters. North Carolina, however, only offers gambling in the form of Indian casinos, specifically casinos owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

In 1994, the casino compact with the Cherokee tribe received state approval from the North Carolina government. The tribe then started providing video games to the locals. Through this gambling compact, they were able to open their first casino in 1997.

For Cherokee casinos to offer table games, North Carolina amended its laws. The federally recognized tribe opened Cherokee Valley River Casino because there was less gaming competition in the state. The Cherokee Tribe vehemently opposed the establishment of a third casino, despite numerous tribes trying to build casinos inside state boundaries. The tribe’s two casinos are:

  • Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel
  • Harrah’s Cherokee

Gambling Taxes in South Carolina

In most cases, a flat 24% tax is applied to your gambling winnings. Gambling winnings over $5,000, however, will be subject to income tax withholding for the sources indicated here: any lottery, wagering pool, or sweepstakes (including rewards awarded to poker tournament winners, for example).

Typically, lottery winnings are subject to income tax. Winners must therefore pay local, state, and occasionally federal taxes. The profits will be taxed in the state the ticket was bought in, which in this case is South Carolina, regardless of where the winner resides.

For every win, you must provide the payer with your Social Security number in addition to completing IRS Form W2-G to declare the entire sum won. Before paying you, the casino would typically deduct 24% from your proceeds as IRS gambling taxes. Not all gains from gambling are reported on IRS Form W2-G.

According to IRS laws, gambling winnings are completely taxed. If you decide to itemize deductions on your tax return, however, gambling losses may be deducted up to the amount of your wins. Keep thorough records of your victories and defeats to support your tax deduction claims. You can show proof of your losses via these documents:

  • Type W-2G (provided by the payer)
  • betting slips
  • canceled wagers or payments
  • Bank withdrawals and credit records
  • income from gaming establishments

In general, the IRS requires the payer to deduct 24% of your winnings for income taxes if you win more than $5,000 on a wager and the payoff is at least 300 times your original wager. (Specific withholding regulations apply to profits from poker tournaments, keno, bingo, and slot machines.) In a nutshell:

  • Any prize worth $600 or less: 0% Gross Income Tax
  • Any prize worth $5,000 or more: 25% Gross Income Tax
  • Any prize won: SC state tax of 7% Gross Income Tax

South Carolina Casinos – Best Places to Gamble in SC

South Carolina is a tough spot for casino lovers since there aren’t any commercial or Indian gaming casinos in the state. The only federally recognized tribe is the Catawba Indian Nation, which owns a 700-acre reservation in York County; there are no gambling establishments on this land. However, there are a few riverboat casinos in SC.

Back in the day, the Catawba Nation had two bingo halls, but both turned out to be unprofitable and were closed down. But don’t despair – the tribe currently owns the Catawaba Two Kings Casino in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, so you don’t have to travel too far to get your gaming fix.

South Carolina Gambling Revenues

While South Carolina has strict laws against gambling, the state still generates revenue from several forms of legal betting. In 2021, the South Carolina Education Lottery reported record-breaking sales of over $2.2 billion. Of this, $537 million was allocated to fund educational programs across the state.

Additionally, the state allows limited forms of charitable gambling, such as raffles and bingo games, which generated over $46 million in revenue in 2020. These funds are used to support various charitable organizations across the state, such as community centers and youth programs.

In South Carolina, the only other legal form of gambling is betting on horse racing. The state has two race tracks, one in Aiken and one in Camden, which generated over $10 million in revenue in 2020. A portion of these revenues is allocated to the South Carolina Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, which provides care and rehabilitation for retired racehorses.

Despite the limited forms of legal gambling, illegal gambling operations still exist in South Carolina. In 2020, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division seized over $2 million from illegal gambling operations, further highlighting the need for strict enforcement of the state’s gambling laws.

In summary, while gambling remains largely illegal in South Carolina, the state generates significant revenue from legal forms of gambling such as the South Carolina Education Lottery, charitable gambling, and horse racing. These revenues are allocated to fund educational programs, support charitable organizations, and provide care for retired racehorses.

Indian Gaming Tribes in South Carolina

South Carolina is home to one federally recognized Indian tribe, the Catawba Indian Nation, which has a history of over 400 years in the state. The Catawba Indian Nation is located in York County and has over 3,000 enrolled members, making it the only federally recognized tribe in South Carolina.

In recent years, the Catawba Indian Nation has been in a legal battle with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians over a proposed casino in North Carolina. The Catawba Indian Nation received federal approval to build a casino in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, but the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians filed a lawsuit to stop the project, claiming that it would negatively impact their own gaming operations in the region.

The legal dispute over the Kings Mountain casino project highlights the complex issues surrounding Indian gaming in the region, including tribal sovereignty, economic development, and competition among tribes.

Other Indian tribes, such as the Pee Dee Indian Tribe of South Carolina, are seeking federal recognition in order to pursue their own gaming operations. However, the process of obtaining federal recognition can be lengthy and difficult, and there are currently no other federally recognized Indian tribes in South Carolina.

A History of Gambling in South Carolina

South Carolina has a long and complicated history with gambling. The state has some of the strictest laws against gambling in the country, and currently, there are no casinos or other forms of legal gambling establishments within its borders. However, it was not always this way.

In the early days of South Carolina, gambling was prevalent, with horse racing and lotteries being popular forms of entertainment. The state even authorized a lottery in 1745 to raise money for the construction of public buildings. However, the lottery was later shut down due to corruption and fraud, and gambling was outlawed in the state in 1802.

Despite the ban on gambling, illegal gambling operations continued to exist in South Carolina throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in urban areas such as Charleston and Columbia. In the 1950s and 1960s, law enforcement cracked down on illegal gambling rings, seizing millions of dollars in illegal proceeds.

In 1986, South Carolina allowed the creation of a state lottery, which has since become one of the most successful in the country. The South Carolina Education Lottery reported record-breaking sales of over $2.2 billion in 2021, with over $537 million allocated to fund educational programs across the state.

However, outside of the lottery, South Carolina has remained steadfast in its opposition to other forms of gambling, including casinos, sports betting, and online gaming. The state’s constitution prohibits any form of gambling except for the lottery and betting on horse racing, and any attempts to legalize other forms of gambling have been met with resistance.

One of the main reasons for South Carolina’s strict stance against gambling is the influence of conservative and religious groups in the state. These groups have long argued that gambling is morally corrupt and contributes to social problems such as addiction and crime.

Despite this opposition, some South Carolina lawmakers have proposed the legalization of casinos and sports betting in recent years, citing the potential economic benefits of these industries. However, these proposals have yet to gain traction in the state legislature.

Gambling Taxes in South Carolina

If you’re a resident of South Carolina who enjoys gambling, it’s important to understand the tax implications of your winnings. In general, any gambling winnings you receive are subject to state and federal taxes. In South Carolina, gambling winnings are taxed at a rate of 7%, regardless of the amount won.

For example, if you win $1,000 at a casino or from a lottery ticket, you would owe $70 in state taxes. These taxes are due at the time you file your annual state income tax return, which is due on April 15th of each year.

If you are a nonresident of South Carolina and win gambling income within the state, you will also be subject to the state’s 7% tax rate. However, you may be able to claim a credit for taxes paid to South Carolina on your home state’s tax return.

It’s important to keep accurate records of your gambling winnings and losses, as you will need to report these on your state income tax return. You can deduct gambling losses up to the amount of your winnings, but only if you itemize your deductions. In addition, if you win a large jackpot of $1,200 or more from a slot machine or bingo game, the casino will report this to the IRS, and you will receive a W-2G form.

If you have questions about how to report your gambling income on your state income tax return, it’s best to consult with a tax professional. They can help ensure that you are accurately reporting your income and taking advantage of any deductions or credits that may be available to you.

Boats and Bets: South Carolina’s Top Gambling Cruises

Rick Rockwell

Casino boats in South Carolina are one of the only refuges from the Palmetto State’s strict gambling laws. By taking players out to sea, gambling cruises can evade the state’s restrictive betting legislation.

South Carolina’s online casinos are another great option for gambling in the Palmetto State. But if you want to play games in person, you will need to leave the state’s jurisdiction, by land or by sea.

Luckily, there are great options for casino cruises in South Carolina. Keep reading to see my picks for the best gambling cruises that depart from ports in the Palmetto State.

Is Gambling Legal In South Carolina?

Gambling laws have been in flux across the US in recent years. Many states have lessened their restrictions on gambling, including sports betting.

Unfortunately, The Palmetto State has lagged behind most of the other states in the US when it comes to gambling. South Carolina still forbids nearly all forms of commercial gaming, including casinos and sports betting.

Lawmakers have proposed amendments to legalize sports betting in South Carolina, but so far, they have not had any success. Luckily, you can still access online betting sites from outside of the Palmetto State’s jurisdiction.

This includes South Carolina sports betting sites and casinos. These online gambling sites aren’t physically located within the state’s borders, but they still allow residents of South Carolina to legally gamble.

Legal Casino Boats in South Carolina

South Carolina casino boats operate in much the same way as online betting sites that reside outside of the state. They are able to evade the Palmetto State’s gambling laws by offering legal gambling options to bettors and gamblers alike.

The biggest difference is that casino cruises in South Carolina physically remove bettors from the state. These floating casinos can offer slots, table games, and more by taking bettors out to sea. South Carolina laws do not apply to these cruises once they have left the port.

The Big “M” Casino

  • Address: 4491 Mineola Ave, Little River, SC 29566
  • Phone Number: (843) 249-9811
  • Official Website

One of the most famous casino boats in South Carolina is the Big “M” Casino. This cruise docks in Little River, SC, which is just north of Myrtle Beach.

It is also just south of the North Carolina border, so bettors from the Tar Heel State can also enjoy the Big “M” Casino’s services. There are two ships to choose from, aptly named Ship I and Ship II.

Ship II is the larger vessel, but both offer great real money casino games to choose from. Ship I has over 150 slots, while Ship II has nearly 250. Guests also have the option of playing great table games, such as:

  • Three Card Poker
  • Let It Ride

The Big “M” Casino cruise in Little River, South Carolina, also has great promotions available. For instance, new players can get $10 in free bonus funds. There are also promotional events, like Its Ladies Night and Senior’s Day.

Comparable Online Casino Option

The Big “M” Casino is a great gambling cruise, but it is not available 24/7. If you need to practice your skills or if you don’t want to wait to play, check out Wild Casino . This gambling site has hundreds of casino games to choose from, including over 400 real money slot games .

Wild also has a great selection of table games, which rivals those available at The Big “M” Casino. There are great casino bonuses available for new players, which can add tons of extra funds to your bankroll.

Carnival Sunshine Casino

  • Address: 32 Washington St, Charleston, SC 29401
  • Phone Number: (800) 764-7419

The next cruise on my list is a casino boat in Charleston, South Carolina. The Carnival Sunshine Casino is located on the Carnival Sunshine vessel. Carnival is one of the most popular cruise lines in the United States and for good reason.

This cruise is much longer than the other entries on this list, and usually lasts four days depending on your destination. The Carnival Sunshine can go to either the Bahamas or the Caribbean, so you will have plenty of time to enjoy all the casino games available.

At the Carnival Sunshine Casino, you will have plenty of table games to choose from including:

There are also plenty of poker tables available, including high and low-roller tables. Because you will be in international waters, guests only need to be 18 years of age to gamble at this casino.

A great online alternative for fans of the Carnival Sunshine Casino is DuckyLuck Casino . This site has a wide selection of table games and even offers live dealer games. You can even try games in demo mode and play them for free.

You can use DuckyLuck to practice playing online craps , blackjack, roulette, and other table games for free before boarding the Carnival Sunshine. It has a great mobile casino app , too. So, you can practice playing right on your phone or tablet.

What Happened to the SunCruz Aquasino South Carolina Casino Boat?

Not all of the casino boats in South Carolina can be as successful as the ones listed above. Sadly, the SunCruz Aquasino’s time sailing the ocean near South Carolina was cut short in 2014.

The Aquasino started in Palm Beach, FL, but moved to South Carolina in 2010. It was a five-hour cruise that could hold 600 guests. The casino offered table games, such as poker and blackjack, along with slot machines.

SunCruz Aquasino was a popular casino cruise option near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, docking in Little River. But it ceased operations in 2014 and is no longer available to bettors in South Carolina.

The SunCruz Aquasino may no longer be in operation, but luckily Bovada is. This gambling site is a great option for players who were a fan of the now-defunct casino cruise in South Carolina.

Bovada has hundreds of casino games available including live dealer online blackjack , slots, and online roulette . You can even compete for special progressive jackpots known as Hot Drop Jackpots. This site also has one of the top online sportsbooks , so you can bet on all of your favorite sports teams too.

As a member of Bovada, you will be able to access the casino and sportsbook from your preferred mobile device or PC. This means that you can turn any cruise in South Carolina into your very own casino boat.

The SunCruz Casino boat may be closed, but you can recreate the experience using Bovada’s mobile casino app. You can even play for free because the casino offers free versions of all of its online casino games.

Tips for Players Using Casino Boats in South Carolina

Casino cruises in South Carolina are a great option for residents of the Palmetto State that want a live gambling experience. If you do decide to take advantage of the boats above, make sure you follow these casino cruise gambling tips:

Book in Advance

One of the first things you should do if you want to gamble on a South Carolina boat is book your trip in advance. The options for casino boat gambling in the Palmetto State are limited, so you will want to reserve your seat quickly.

Luckily, booking your cruise is easy to do. Both the Carnival Sunshine and the Big “M” Casino allow you to book online. This makes securing your spot on either casino cruise in South Carolina very simple.

Avoid Drinking Too Much

If you have gambled at a casino before, then you were probably offered a drink. Many casinos even give guests free alcoholic drinks to encourage gambling.

This is because alcohol lowers your inhibitions, which can cause you to gamble more. Gambling recklessly will only benefit the casino and will likely cost you your bankroll. So, if you are planning to take a South Carolina casino boat trip, make sure you watch your alcohol intake.

Stick to Your Bankroll Limits

A major part of your betting strategy will depend on your bankroll, or the money you can spend on gambling. Stretching your bankroll out will allow you to spend more time playing your favorite games on casino cruises in South Carolina.

Once your bankroll runs out, you should stop playing. If you do not stick to your bankroll, then you risk betting money you cannot afford to lose. Luckily, the casino boats in South Carolina have non-gambling activities that you can enjoy when you are done playing.

Which Casino Boat in South Carolina Will You Try Next?

Casino boats in South Carolina give residents of the Palmetto State an option for in-person casino games. There are also out-of-state gambling sites that accept South Carolina players and offer paid casino games. Both are great options for gambling while lawmakers work on new South Carolina gambling laws.
