Dear boat builders,.

Life has changed a lot since we downsized to this little village on the Rideau Canal in 2018. We have navigated a pandemic and the challenges of growing even older—yikes, who knew that was going to happen? We have made some important changes to our business recently:

Order fulfillment of Bear Mountain plans and building materials are now being handled by Noah’s Marine in Toronto. Jason and his crew are happy to continue the Bear Mountain tradition. Of course I am available to help with advice and support.
The sprint racing canoes Ted has supplied to clubs throughout Canada for over 40 years are now being built by our talented friend John Hendren in his Peterborough workshop. Jon has completed two C15s this season. Now over the pandemic hump, the sprint clubs are bringing boats in for repair and placing orders, and are happy with John’s work.
Our electric fantail launch, Sparks, is now in storage at Sirens Boatworks in Merrickville, ON further upriver from Westport on the Rideau canal. We are no longer able to use her so Andrew Lee and crew will introduce her to prospective buyers. If you know of someone who would enjoy cruising in quiet elegance in Ted’s most significant creation please let us know.
Although Ted’s health has been a challenge he still works in his small home workshop as he can. He built the prototypes for our new dragon boat trainer the Dragonfly , and maintains our family boats.

We are grateful for our friends in the boat building community who continue to support our small business and inspire us by sharing pictures and stories of the boats they have built. I’m Arch Davis – I learned boatbuilding and design in New Zealand in the 1970s. I have been helping people to build beautiful wooden boats since 1988. You can see a few of them by clicking on Picture Gallery . My approach to design is to put into your hands the means to use modern materials – marine plywood and epoxy resin – to build a truly lovely boat with classic lines.

I believe that a boat should be beautiful, not just by virtue of her lines, but also in her construction. No material makes this possible like wood. My aim is to take advantage of wood’s unique strengths, in a structure that captivates the eye. I want you to feel that you are always doing good work in building one of these boats.

You’ll see that I have a small collection of designs. That is because I understand your need for clear, comprehensible, detailed plans and instructions. I put a lot of time into my drawings, building manuals and DVDs. I also spend a lot of time helping people through their projects, on the phone or by e-mail. I really am here to help!

My two week class Building the Penobscot 13 at the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine, is one of the highlights of my summer, and has been very well reviewed by students. The school on beautiful Eggemoggin Reach is a great place to spend some time. You get the chance to see a variety of activities, there is a fleet of small wooden boats that are available to students in the evenings and on weekends, and the food is great!

Solace 16 XL

The Solace 16 XL handles like a sports car, but carries a load like a pick-up truck! The Solace 16 XL "Extra Large" is beautiful, rugged, fast, and as ready as you are for fun and adventure.

The largest difference between the "EX" series and the "XL" series is the height and width of the kayak at the cockpit. The "XL" series has a taller and wider cockpit, which ultimately makes the whole kayak larger in volume. There are three cockpit sizes which accommodate large and tall paddlers for both the "EX" and "XL" series, but large and tall paddlers may find the cockpit more spacious and comfortable than the "EX." Beginner paddlers will enjoy the stability of the "XL" series but the intermediate and expert paddlers will benefit from the manoeuvrability, speed, efficiency, and durability of this kayak. The low deck at the rear of the cockpit allows rolling and rescue manoeuvres with ease. This kayak is great for new paddlers but will remain the primary kayak for the paddler in years to come. This kayak accommodates paddlers 5’ 3” to 6’ 3” from 105 lbs to 225 lbs. This kayak is also suitable for paddlers with large feet or limited mobility due to its higher deck height. can easily manoeuvre their favourite river, lake or ocean with confidence in this boat.

All of our kayaks have a bow and stern sealed bulkhead. This acts like two ballast tanks that hold air and cannot be occupied by water. This increases the kayaks safety in windy and wavy conditions the kayak cannot sink or fill with water.

Our Types of Kits

Tippecanoe kits are fun and easy to build. In our world which is becoming increasingly virtual it is a great experience to build something real and tangible. The excitement of getting to sail your own boat when you have finished building is unparalleled! What could be more fun? The Tippecanoe boat you build tomorrow might well be in your family for generations to come. We design our boats to be beautiful, to sail fast, to be easy to build and to last for years and years.

Free-Sailing Sailboat Kits

All of the woodworking is already completed when you receive your free sailing kit. The sails are pre-sewn and the hull is already sanded, ready for varnish. The building instructions are very clear and easy to follow.

Everything you need to build the kit is included except for paint or varnish. The T12 and the T15 include racing stripes that can be applied to the hull for an extra decorativie accent. Assembly time after varnishing is about 25 minutes for the T12 Cruiser, 30 minutes for the T15 Racing Sloop, and 45 minutes for the T18 T-Class. All of the boats are also available finished and ready to sail.

Radio-Controlled (RC) Sailboat Kits

Tippecanoe RC boats are sophisticated and fast – and easy to build! Every kit includes everything you need to build and sail your Tippecanoe radio controlled sailboat except for paint, varnish and AA batteries. All of the radio control gear, including the handheld transmitter as well as the in-boat reciever, is included in the kit. The radio control gear is all full power rc hobby gear. The instructions are written clearly in non-translated English and are based on the assumption that you are an aero-space engineer that needs very little help – no, actually I write all of the instructions with the assumption that you have never done anything even vaguely similar to building a boat before in your life and every detail of every step is explained very carefully. After all, before long, you will have your beautiful boat at the lake and lots of people will be admiring it and asking if it was hard to build. The wooden parts in our RC kits are pre-cut with a precision computer controlled router. The boats are assembled with a West System marine epoxy, the same as is used on full sized boats. All of the epoxy is included in the kits. We include a clear version and a pre-thickened version of the epoxy. The pre-thickened version spreads just like mayonnaise with no sag and no running so it is remarkably easy to use. The epoxy is super strong, so your boat will last for years and sail beautifully even if you only get a small amount of the epoxy in the right places! The differences we see between boats that different owners have built is only how carefully the final finishing is done. All of the boats are beautiful, all of the boats sail beautifully and all of the boats will last for many, many years. Every boat is finished off differently with different colors and different design ideas so every boat becomes a very personal creation with its own special character. Go wild, build a boat! A Remote Control Sailboat that is fast, powerful, affordable, and fun to build. The T37 RC Racing Sloop is 37 inches long, 5 feet high, and has a total weight of 4 pounds with the keel ballast casting weighing 2 of these pounds. There are more than 3000 T37 RC Sailboats sailing today, some in countries as far away as Thailand and New Zealand! It is a fully sanctioned one design class in the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA).The T37 balances perfectly and sails fast. She tacks effortlessly and will sail in winds gusting up to 20 mph. As with all of our model sailboats, the heavy ballast casting at the bottom of the keel makes it impossible to tip the sailboat over. All fittings on this RC sailboat are solid brass or high grade marine 316 stainless steel. The hull is very light and strong, built from 1/8 inch mahogany plywood. The sails are genuine nylon spinnaker cloth; this is the same material that is used on full size sailboat spinnakers. The mast can be removed in less than one minute for easy transport.

The T37 RC Sailboat Kits come with everything you will need to build the boat, including the marine epoxy and all of the RC gear (except for batteries) for sailing the boat. In fact, all you need is paint or varnish and AA batteries! For assembly, we recommend ages 15 and up, or 12 and up with an adult. For sailing and racing, we suggest ages 8 through adult.

Sails can be made in any of the colors shown on the color swatch in the last picture. The standard main sail colors are white and fluorescent yellow, and the standard jib sail colors are white, dark blue, red, and fluorescent orange. Other colors listed are an additional $6.50 per sail.
