Viking Yachts 93 Motor Yacht Used-Yacht Review

Gilman Yachts currently has Obsession , a Viking Yachts 93 Motor Yacht, listed for sale with an asking price of $7.4 million. The 2018 enclosed-flybridge motor yacht has charter potential with its five-stateroom layout, two crew cabins and a sub six-foot draft.

Yachting ‘s initial review of the Viking 93 Motor Yacht reported how the New Jersey boatbuilder’s flagship model was based on its 75 Motor Yacht’s design, but also drew inspiration from a Viking owner’s Westport 112 .

“One Viking owner also has a Westport, and Viking’s designers and top brass spent a good amount of time on board that yacht learning how to nail down the needs of owners in that size range. What Viking developed from that experience is a boat built for socializing, one that lets hands-on owners feel at home while enjoying mega-yacht features.”

Speaking of mega-yacht features, the salon has a formal dining area for eight guests forward with a high-gloss wood table with inset stainless-steel trim. Next to the dining table to starboard are sliding glass doors that open for warm breezes and provide access to the Opacmare foldout balcony. Aft, guests will find three sofas positioned around a coffee table to port. The salon sole is Avalon Acacia Cocoa plank.

“The salon has a markedly masculine feel, perhaps not surprising from a company with roots in sport fishing. Rich satin walnut with high-gloss walnut accents exudes a stately elegance and inviting warmth,” Yachting said during its initial review.

Forward, a dividing wall separates the 93 MY’s country galley from the dining area. Foodies will rejoice over Obsession ’s galley, which is equipped with a full complement of Miele appliances, including a surface-mount, four-burner induction stovetop, a stainless-steel oven, a full-size upright Sub-Zero refrigerator, two doors with freezer drawers, a stainless-steel microwave, an exhaust fan with exterior ventilation, a Badger garbage disposal, a Double under-mount stainless-steel sink with satin-nickel faucet, a Fisher-Paykel dishwasher with a walnut front. A four-person dinette is forward of the galley’s island, which doubles as a bar with four fixed stools, for casual dining.

The yacht’s enclosed flybridge, which can be accessed from stairs in the salon, has a three-person, aft-facing bar to port. An L-shaped sofa with a coffee table is forward and to port. The helm station is forward with a single Stidd helm seat on centerline for the skipper, which is flanked by two Stidd bench seats for guests and crew.

Exterior spaces on board this 93-footer include a cockpit penned for alfresco dining with a 32-square-foot dining table, which has a removable leaf to make getting around easier. Its U-shaped bench seat aft against the transom has space for five guests. Pull up some loose chairs for additional seating. A three-person bar is forward and to port.

When it’s time to catch some sun or enjoy sundowners with friends, the vessel’s teak side decks lead to the foredeck where there is a four-person bench seat abaft a three-person sun pad.

The 93 MY’s five staterooms are all belowdecks, including the full-beam (24’4″) master stateroom amidships. The space has a king berth on centerline, a two-person dining nook, a 65-inch flat-screen TV and an en suite head. The forepeak VIP stateroom has a queen berth, a 32-inch flat-screen TV and an en suite head. The guest stateroom forward and to starboard has twin bunks and a flat-screen TV. The aft starboard guest stateroom has twin berths, a flat-screen TV and an en suite head. The VIP stateroom to port has a queen berth, a flat-screen TV and an en suite head.

Power for Obsession is twin 1,945 hp MTU 12V2000 M96L diesels, giving it a reported 27-knot top hop and a 21- to 24-knot cruise speed. Range at cruise speed is around 400 nautical miles, according to the builder. Viking’s 93 motor yacht has a “resin-infused, balsa-cored hull with a fine entry and 15.2 degrees of deadrise at the transom…”

Some other notable features include a Seakeeper SK35 stabilization system, Garmin electronics, including two Garmin GPSMAP 8617 17-inch multifunction displays, an GPSMAP 8622 22-inch MFD, 2526 x HD2 25 kW radar with six-foot array, GSD-26 Chirp video sounder with 1 kW wide-beam transducer, GXM 53 weather antenna, AIS-600 AIS transponder, NMEA 2000 (network components, Garmin Wi-Fi adapter for BlueChart, Furuno RD33 data organizer, Garmin GHP Reactor steer-by-wire autopilot, two ICOM M-605 VHF radios, Fusion MS-ACSXV Sirius XM tuner, KVH Tracphone V7-IP, KVH HD7 TracVision SAT TV and more.

The Viking 93MY is a 93-foot luxury motor yacht with a 24-foot beam that was launched by New Jersey-based Viking Yachts in 2018. The 93MY is the largest yacht ever built by Viking, not to mention the most luxurious, and is of course something of a departure for a company famed more for their agile sportfishing vessels. Yet this is as stylish and sleek a design as anything you will see floating on the Mediterranean and boasts signature Viking design motifs such as ample space, an enclosed bridge, a superbly balanced, Michael Peters-designed planing hull and that elusive, Made-in-America craftsmanship that sets Viking apart from its competitors.

The enclosed bridge on this model is one of the largest you will ever find on a yacht of this class, and features a raised helm station that has been custom-made by Atlantic Marine Electronics for peerless navigation. The dashboard features Garmin touch-screen instrumentation, a ZF joystick, bow and stern thrusters, power-assisted steering and CCTV screens across from three leather-clad Stidd helm chairs that enjoy gin-clear visibility through wrap-around mullioned windows. Elsewhere on the bridge there is a large L-shaped sofa, a glazed retractable sunroof, glossy walnut cabinetry and a convenient day-head. Transparent sliding glass doors in bulky stainless-steel frames fully open up to lead out to an exposed aft-sun deck on the flybridge level, featuring a low-slung, U-shaped leather sofa and an angled wet-bar with Caesar-stone worktops, an icemaker, a sink, four bar stools and an outdoor Kenyon Grill.

The main deck is similarly well-appointed and includes a sprawling foredeck area with a Portuguese Bridge-style sofa and a marina-facing leather sunpad that can accommodate up to five sunbathers. At the rear there is a sheltered aft-deck lined in durable teak with yet another walk-in wet-bar, a transom dining sofa with a table, and side steps down to a hydraulic swimming platform. You will also find the transom garage down here where you can store a pair of water toys, though this garage is large enough when fully opened to transform the swimming platform area into a fun aft-beach club.

Internal main deck spaces have been crafted by WBC Design, and impress with your choice of teak, walnut or maple surfaces in high-gloss or satin finishes and durable Avalon flooring. There is a curved staircase to the bridge to starboard, while to port you will enjoy relaxing on the huge U-shaped leather sofa with room for up to 8 guests. Positioned centrally is a formal dining table to port and, to starboard, a floor-to-ceiling double glass door that leads to a cutaway-bulwark cocktail terrace. At the front of the main deck cockpit, you will find an open country-kitchen galley that is larger than many studio apartments. A four-zone hob, a 7-foot-tall Sub-Zero fridge-freezer, a microwave, a convection oven, a central island, a double-sink, a breakfast bar, a day-head and a U-shaped forward sofa are all to be found in this incredible family-sized kitchen.

The front half of the lower-deck features three en-suite staterooms plus a snug bunk berth for up to 8 guests, and rooms benefit from large porthole windows or knife-insert windows. Positioned amidship, however, is possibly the largest owner’s stateroom ever to be found on a yacht of this class. This full-beam suite benefits from two trapezoidal hull windows, a private staircase, a king-sized bed with bedside tables, a walk-in dressing room with hanging closets, a work-desk, a breakfast table with two seats, plenty of hidden storage and a bathroom with two sinks and a shower cubicle. Located up against the engine room, meanwhile, is a crew quarters with sleeping space for up to 3 members of staff that comes with its own dinette and bathroom.

No expense has been spared in equipping this mammoth yacht with the most powerful engines available. Buyers can choose from standard MAN V12 twins, a pair of CAT C32Bs or top-of-the-range MTU V12 M96X 2002MHP diesels for top speeds of almost 28 knots. The Viking 93MY can also be fitted with a Seakeeper SK 35 stabilizer for reduced roll in choppy waters, while a pair of pop-up wing helm stations in the cockpit prove helpful when docking. Thanks to this yacht’s durable hull, crafted for bluewater conditions, and a fuel capacity of 2,007 gallons, this is a superb long-range luxury yacht that can take you all the way to the Bahamas.

Creative Writing

Entry requirements.

The creative and critical elements will entail considered independent research and development. For this reason, we can only consider applications from applicants who have successfully completed an MA in Creative Writing, or candidates who can demonstrate composite professional experience (which includes publishing). This should be clearly demonstrated in your application. For the PhD, you must demonstrate how the research project relates to your current creative practice.

Please note: check the staff profiles prior to application to make sure that your proposal is within an area that we can support. We will be unable to support a research project which falls too far outside of our own field of research and teaching.

For the application we require:

• a detailed outline describing the planned creative project
• an outline of the potential critical enquiry and how it relates to the creative project (this can be less detailed than the description of the creative project)
• a statement about your reasons for considering a research degree
• examples of creative work
• a short resume or CV
• two references from people who are familiar with both your creative and critical abilities

The application will be reviewed by the department in several stages. If there is an interested and available supervisor we will ask you form an interview, which can happen online.

Course content

Work with our team of award-winning authors to develop your creative practice and its critique. Creative Writing at Birmingham is part of the Department of Film and Creative writing, and is closely aligned to the Departments of English Literature and English Language and Applied Linguistics, allowing you to benefit from our breadth of expertise.

This practice-based PhD will support you in the development of a long-form piece of creative writing, or a sequence of related works. You will also identify critical concerns and interests related to your creative practice. The final submission is divided between the creative piece and a related critical document.

Your PhD submission will usually entail:

For prose: a creative document (50 – 80%) of either long-form prose/novel, or a collection of short-form prose/stories supported by a critical paper (20–50%) of a similar length to a critical literary PhD submission (around 80,000 to 100,000 words). A novel, for example, should be somewhere between 60,000 to 80,000 words. The critical paper can be between 20,000 to 40,000 words. This would be discussed with your supervisor throughout your study.

For poetry: a creative document of collected poems or a single work with a developed critical thesis (20,000-50,000 words)

• For scriptwriting (for film and live performance): a single project or a collection of multiple shorts should be of comparable length and commitment as the prose element, with a critical element between 20-50% of the overall submission.

Other creative formats (for example a script for a graphic novel) will follow the poetry or prose model, with a 20–50% split for the critical element.

The creative document will be an original work of significant, publishable quality which demonstrates an understanding of craft, genre, and form. The critical document will present a structured and developed argument that demonstrates an awareness of context, and discuss, where relevant, critical and creative processes.

If you are a graduate with considerable experience in writing creatively and wish to proceed to a career or further study in this area, then our innovative MA in Creative Writing is for you.

The programme will allow you to develop your own work, your own voice and your own ideas with dedicated workshop time and opportunities to give and receive feedback to and from your peers. You will also benefit from professional skills training to prepare you for your encounters with the writing industry, with insights from industry professional such as editors and publishers.

Entry Requirements

We ask for a 2:1 Honours degree, or equivalent, preferably in English and/or Creative Writing, but other disciplines will be considered. Applicants should also have considerable experience of writing creatively. All prospective students must also submit a sample of written work as part of the online application process. Your sample should be in the form of a portfolio of creative writing of c. 3,000 words. This may be a prose sample (e.g. one or more short stories; part of a novel); a play or film script; or a selection of poems.

As a writer, I think it’s vital and energising to step into novel environments and simply explore. The University of Birmingham’s Creative Writing program is designed for exploration. I’ve written pieces across different genres and styles, from poems and short stories to satirical articles and feature-length screenplays. Sampling various writing styles has helped me hone my own voice and expand the depth of my writing.” What has been the highlight of your course? “The collaborative atmosphere of the program has been incredibly helpful to my growth as a writer. Giving and receiving feedback is central to the course as it helps us improve not only with our writing, but also our editing skills. Having an array of opinions and suggestions has been invaluable for me, especially from the department whose expertise covers a range of writing styles. Our modules also had a great mix of theoretical teaching with writing practice and professional development. Writing, for me, is no longer just a skill or a hobby, but the core of my career path.” What have you learnt from your programme? “The most important skill I’ve learned is how to edit—what to look for in a piece of writing and how to offer useful suggestions. Course Description

Work with our team of award-winning authors to develop your creative practice and its critique. Creative Writing at Birmingham is part of the Department of Film and Creative Writing, and is closely aligned to the Departments of English Literature and English Language and Applied Linguistics, allowing you to benefit from our breadth of expertise.

• For prose: a creative document (50 – 80%) of either long-form prose/novel, or a collection of short-form prose/stories supported by a critical paper (20–50%) of a similar length to a critical literary PhD submission (around 80,000 to 100,000 words). A novel, for example, should be somewhere between 60,000 to 80,000 words. The critical paper can be between 20,000 to 40,000 words. This would be discussed with your supervisor throughout your study.
• For poetry: a creative document of collected poems or a single work with a developed critical thesis (around 50,000 words)

Other creative formats (for example a script for a graphic novel) will follow the poetry or prose model, with a 20–50% split for the critical element.

The Creative Writing cluster has cultivated a thriving environment for outstanding practitioners and researchers in creative writing. Our members produce fiction, poetry, screen and radio plays, creative non-fiction, literary criticism and editorial work. 

Research aims

For many years we have invited best-selling authors and creative scholars to share their work with us. We have fostered links with Writing West Midlands , the Birmingham Literature Festival , the Royal Opera House , the REP and the BBC . We are increasing the reach of these activities through our Institute of Creative and Critical Writing.

The goals of the  Institute of Creative and Critical Writing  (ICCW) are to enrich the creative writing work of the School and engage with the wider literary culture. It is backed by its Fellows, who are published authors, theatre professionals and academics.

NATO Countries Beef Up Ukraine's Navy With 'Viking' Vehicles, Raiding Boats

U kraine's NATO allies are boosting Kyiv's scant naval forces, building up Ukraine's ability to fend off Russian power in the Black Sea as Ukraine struggles to push back Moscow's forces on land.

On Monday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said it would receive two mine-clearing vessels, 23 raiding craft and 20 Viking amphibious vehicles from the UK and Norway, bolstering the Ukrainian Navy's assets.

London and Oslo, heading up a new Maritime Capability Coalition, would help "to strengthen Ukraine's ability to operate at sea," and set the tone for Kyiv's future integration into NATO, the British Defense Ministry said.

"This will be long term to help Ukraine transform its navy, making it more compatible with Western allies, more interoperable with NATO, and bolstering security in the Black Sea," the UK government added.

The Vikings are fully-amphibious armored all-terrain vehicles, and the Sandown-class mine countermeasures vessels are specially-designed ships intended to take out marine mines.

Ukraine's navy is a small force, but is supplemented by Kyiv's waterborne drone fleet that frequently attacks Russian assets in the Black Sea, along with missile strikes on Russian vessels and key bases. The waters are also used by Moscow to launch missile attacks on Ukraine's southern coastline, including the Black Sea port city of Odesa.

The waters around Ukraine's coastline are heavily mined, posing a threat to all kinds of vessels attempting to make their way through the waters around Ukraine and the Russian-controlled Crimean peninsula. Russia blockaded Ukraine's ports after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, prompting global anxieties over grain exports leaving the war-torn country.

The mine-hunting ships "will deliver vital capability to Ukraine which will help save lives at sea and open up vital export routes," said British Defense Secretary, Grant Shapps.

"Ukraine won in the Black Sea," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday. "We've resumed our maritime trade, notably food exports, protecting dozens of nations in Africa and Asia from hunger and chaos. In 2024, Ukraine will clear more trade routes," he added.

The commander of Ukraine's naval forces, Oleksiy Neizhpapa, told Ukrainian media on Monday that the coalition was intended to last until 2035, and that the two mine-clearing ships were ready for the Ukrainian navy to use.

"Our goal is to contribute to building a lasting Ukrainian naval capability," said Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

NATO member Turkey controls access to the Black Sea through the Bosphorus, but has walked a careful line with Moscow, maintaining economic ties with the Kremlin while negotiating for the flow of grain from Ukraine out into the wider world.

Ankara exerts power over which vessels can pass into the Black Sea under an agreement known as the Montreux Convention, which limits the passage of warships involved in a conflict through the Turkish Straits, the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus.
