Son desperate for answers after mom died suddenly on vodou retreat: ‘something sinister happened’.

A North Carolina woman died under mysterious circumstances on a Vodou retreat in Haiti — and her family is demanding answers from the group’s leaders.

Dana Jackson, 51, traveled to Haiti on July 1 with a group that she met through the Vodou community, her son, Timothy Jackson, told USA Today .

Jackson had been practicing Vodou for a few years, and wanted to become a Manbo priestess, a female ritual specialist, Timothy explained.

“Four years ago, my mom started to do a little bit of research on the African traditional spiritual belief systems and Vodou was a part of that,” he said.

 “She had kind of been on this path of just kind of doing research and practicing, or at least, just doing her due diligence as far as research is concerned.”

Timothy was nervous about his mom’s trip, but was comforted by the fact that she knew the group she was traveling with.

“The people that she went down there with, their name is Sosyete and I believe that that means society in the Turkish language and Nago,” Timothy said. 

“These weren’t strangers that she went down there with. These are people that she’s built a relationship with.”

During part of the Vodou ceremony, Jackson was not allowed to contact the outside world.

Timothy said he heard from her on July 13 — 13 days before she was supposed to return to the US.

“If you do any research about that part of the ceremony, even just on Google, it’ll tell you, that’s very sacred and things of that nature,” Timothy told USA Today. 

“So she sent me one last message on the 13th, and she said, ‘We will talk on the 21st going to church tomorrow.‘”

When the 21st finally arrived, Timothy messaged Jackson on WhatsApp, but never heard back, he said.

“I woke up. I’m not gonna lie, I was in a little bit of a panic, because I felt like by now, she at least would have responded to my text,” the concerned son said of the first 24 hours that he could not reach his mom.

On the evening of July 22, Timothy’s grandmother broke the news that his mom had died in Haiti.

“The way she told me was, ‘Your mom’s not coming back from Haiti,’” Timothy recalled.

“I called her back. I asked her, what did she mean? She said, ‘She’s not coming back from Haiti. She passed away.’ I hung up the phone. I called her again.”

When Timothy reached out to one of the leaders of the Vodou group, the first thing they asked him was how much he already knew, he claimed.

“To be completely honest with you, my initial thought was my mom went down to Haiti, they did this last piece of the ceremony, and something sinister happened,” Timothy admitted to USA Today.

According to the person Timothy spoke with, Jackson became ill during the ceremony and fainted.

When she came to, she thought she was in Virginia.

Jackson and her family had not lived in Virginia for over a year, Timothy noted.

The group claimed that they brought Jackson to the hospital, where she had seizures and then suffered a heart attack and a stroke.

“That was the initial story,” Timothy said. 

“They said that my mom didn’t bring her medicine. So there was a red flag, because what medicine are you guys talking about? it sounds like they were trying to perpetuate a story.”

As of this week, Timothy also had no idea where his mother’s body was — even though the group promised him an update by Aug. 16.

“I haven’t heard anything, he lamented. 

“I don’t even think the US Embassy got involved, or even received the necessary paperwork until about four days ago.”

The US Embassy in Port-au-Prince did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for a comment on Jackson’s death.

As of Tuesday morning, a GoFundMe for Dana Jackson’s funeral and related costs had raised over $11,300 of its $50,000 goal.

Her family is also hoping to have an autopsy performed to determine her official cause of death, Timothy Jackson said.

“We don’t know what happened in the last nine days, but whatever happened, my mom did not go to Haiti not to come back to the United States,” he insisted.

Haiti is currently under a Level 4 travel warning by the US State Department.

As of July 2023, all non-emergency government personnel have been on ordered departure, meaning that there are a reduced number of experts available to help Americans who may run into trouble there.

Manchester United agree cut-price sale of 22-year-old

Facundo Pellistri is on his way out of Manchester United after the club agreed a deal with Panathinaikos worth just €6m (£5.12m).

The 22-year-old is set to sign a long-term contract with the Greek club, with the Red Devils writing a sell-on clause into the deal.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports the move, with Diego Alonso said to be crucial in getting the deal done as the Uruguayan is a compatriot of Pellistri.

The transfer fee represents a loss on the young winger as he was signed for £9m from Uruguayan side Penarol back in 2020.

Since his arrival at Old Trafford he ha made just 25 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, 13 of which came in the Premier League, and he will leave without scoring a goal for the club.

Pellistri did appear to be reasonably well thought of by Erik ten Hag, making nine Premier League appearances last season, while he also played over half an hour of the Community Shield against Manchester City earlier this month.

However, he will continue his career in Greece with the team that finished fourth in the Greek Super League last season.

Panathinaikos have already been eliminated from the Europa League this season, losing out to Ajax, but are into the Europa Conference League play-off round where they will take on Lens over two legs.

Pellistri may not be the only winger to leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes, with Jadon Sancho still being linked with an exit.

The England international was left out of the squad on the opening day of the season as United beat Fulham 1-0 and the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea have been touted as possible destinations for him.

However, he was training with the rest of the first team squad on Monday and TenHag suggested after the Fulham game that he is still in his plans.

‘First of all we need squad depth, this season will be survival of the fittest, I can only put 20 players in the squad,’ Ten Hag said. ‘Then Jadon in the week had an ear infection, he was not 100 per cent fit.

‘He could play but we made the choice, we preferred [to have] others on the bench. But that can change. It will change.

‘We can’t play everyone the same, you see today how important the subs are. Sometimes frustrating for the player, but it’s about team, club, there will be more players in this position, we expect them to fight for the club.’

The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine started in 2014. Between then and early 2022, it had already killed over 14,000 people. 

On 24 February 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine on several fronts beginning a major invasion. Ukraine's president declared martial law, vowing stiff resistance, as Western powers condemned Moscow's actions. Crisis Group will be covering this crisis in depth as it develops [ see our Ukraine page ]. The visual explainer below focuses not on the full-scale escalation that began on 24 February, but on fighting in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine that began in 2014. This provides crucial background for understanding what is happening today.

The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine started in 2014. Between then and early 2022, it had already  killed over 14,000 people. Over the course of eight years, Ukrainian government forces fought  Russian-backed separatists for control over much of the two heavily industrialised regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, also known as Donbas. Fierce battles in 2014-2015 ended with one third of the regions' territory, its most urbanised part, occupied by two Russian proxy statelets, the  self-described Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. Between September 2014 and February 2015, Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany signed several iterations of the so-called Minsk agreements, which eventually stopped the forward movement of troops and reduced fighting significantly. But the agreements were never implemented, and the fighting transformed into a trench war, with roughly 75,000 troops facing off along a 420-km-long front line cutting through densely populated areas. The war ruined the area's economy and heavy industries, forced millions to relocate and turned the conflict zone into one of the world’s most mine-contaminated areas.

Some months saw heavier fighting, and more deaths and injuries than others. Geographically, casualties tended to be concentrated where the sides were especially close to key infrastructure, to each other, or both. You can hover over the heat map and click on individual communities to get a sense of how casualties fluctuated over time, and where they occurred most often.

Civilian casualty data in this heat map includes those killed and injured by live fire – in artillery or mortar strikes, or by bullet wounds from rifles or heavy machine guns. It also includes victims of landmines or explosive remnants of war, as well as those who died of natural causes queuing at checkpoints to cross into or from Ukrainian government-controlled territory. The intensity of the fighting differs from month to month. Our way to measure it is to rely on numbers of explosions as recorded by the Special Monitoring Mission of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE SMM) on a daily basis. The SMM was the only international observer mission allowed to collect information from all sides, and its data, while incomplete, remains the best available.

To illustrate the correlation between diplomatic efforts and the dynamics of warfare, we provide the dates of ceasefire recommitments, overlaid on this chart showing the rise and decline of explosions over time. The number of reported explosions often decreased after ceasefires, only to rise again in the absence of a durable settlement.

In 2021-22 two Russian military build-ups along the Ukrainian border foreshadowed an escalation, one in March and April 2021 and a second one in December 2021 through February 2022. Both these phases also saw an increase in reports that the OSCE Missions were denied access to the war zone by  armed formations.  This means that with the invasion drawing closer, the visibility of what was going on in the Donbas conflict zone declined. Eventually, on 24 February 2022, the day of the invasion, the OSCE announced it would evacuate its Mission. On 8 March, all of its international staff had left Ukraine. Local  Mission members will remain in administrative functions in anticipation of the Mission’s revival, but the OSCE has suspended its reporting activities. https://www.osce.org/special-monitoring-mission-to-ukraine/513424

The decision of the Russian government to recognize the independence of the two separatist republics on 21 February 2022 effectively put an end to discussions of Minsk implementation. Three days later, Russia invaded Ukraine, heralding a new phase of the war with a scope of violence far beyond what is depicted here.
