Cutter rigged with electric in-mast furling, electric furling headsails, electric primary and mainsheet winches, and additional spinnaker package, Maylea is great for short-handed bluewater sailing. Extensively refitted by Oyster in 2019 and consistently maintained by a very conscientious owner ever since, she really stands out in the brokerage fleet. Works included the complete removal and reapplication of all antifouling, full rig inspection with servicing and replacement as necessary, rudder servicing, propellor works, new batteries, new main and kedge anchor, tank cleaning, upgraded internet connectivity and new exterior cushions throughout, to name a few.
Below deck, she is finished in warm maple interior, which are juxtaposed perfectly against the striking black and silver furnishings. Proven Frers design, built by the same yard that builds Outbound Yachts
The Bluewater 56 may look familiar to you, as it is the same proven Frers design that was originally developed for Hylas, of which 27 boats were built. Bluewater Yachts acquired the tooling and are now building them at the same yard that builds Outbound Yachts. In fact, hull #1 debuted as an Outbound 56 in the 2019 Annapolis Sailboat Show, and in December of 2020 hull #2 was commissioned which is now called the Bluewater 56.
The Bluewater 56 features a proper offshore bow entry and hull shape which deliver swiftness, power and stability, while maximizing space down below. There is more than ample room for a luxurious owner’s suite aft, beautifully finished in hand-chosen woods. Offshore comfort is further enhanced by the way the hulls are built, the Twaron aramid fiber yields “bullet-proof” strength for added safety.
Experienced sailors will appreciate this well behaved and easily driven yacht, not just for her speed but for the safety that comes with performance and control. This also reduces fatigue on offshore passages and ensure a well rested crew. New Leen 56: Long-Legged French Trimaran
Leen just launched its first power trimaran in La Rochelle, France, an innovative 56-foot explorer cruiser with hybrid power. It will have its official unveiling on April 10.
Although the Leen 56 is the French yard’s first power tri, it’s hardly its first boat. Indeed, the company has been making well-received sailing trimarans for more than a decade under the Neel label. Leen is simply Neel spelled backward.
Taking advantage of the trimaran’s volume (the beam is 27 feet), the Leen 56 makes creative use of the main deck. A large galley, dining area and lounge are on the port side; the owner’s cabin, including an office, occupies the entire starboard side. The master head and shower are a few steps down in the starboard hull.
The wheelhouse is a few steps up from the salon, and it has a 290-degree view, plus a large sofa in the corner and a helm station with seats for two. A side door opens for immediate access to the deck.
The standard layout calls for two other cabins in addition to the owner’s suite. They are in the port and central hulls; both are double cabins and both have en suite heads and showers.
The boat is powered by a diesel, starting at 210 hp, with a straight shaft in the central hull. Twin electric motors are in the outer hulls. The outer engines provide easier low-speed maneuvering and docking, plus silent and emission-free running in port. They also provide a backup in case of a main engine failure.
The trimaran hull is extremely efficient, offering very low water resistance. The company expects the boat speed to top out at 25 knots, and to cruise at 12 knots, with a 500-nm range.
