Bluewater 56
Proven Frers design, built by the same yard that builds Outbound Yachts
The Bluewater 56 may look familiar to you, as it is the same proven Frers design that was originally developed for Hylas, of which 27 boats were built. Bluewater Yachts acquired the tooling and are now building them at the same yard that builds Outbound Yachts. In fact, hull #1 debuted as an Outbound 56 in the 2019 Annapolis Sailboat Show, and in December of 2020 hull #2 was commissioned which is now called the Bluewater 56.
The Bluewater 56 features a proper offshore bow entry and hull shape which deliver swiftness, power and stability, while maximizing space down below. There is more than ample room for a luxurious owner’s suite aft, beautifully finished in hand-chosen woods. Offshore comfort is further enhanced by the way the hulls are built, the Twaron aramid fiber yields “bullet-proof” strength for added safety.
Experienced sailors will appreciate this well behaved and easily driven yacht, not just for her speed but for the safety that comes with performance and control. This also reduces fatigue on offshore passages and ensure a well rested crew. Anyone who steps aboard the Bluewater 56 will also appreciate the high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into building the boat, combined with the well thought out and spacious design ensures that time aboard is time well spent.

You will not believe it...Perfect in almost every way & virtually as she was delivered in 2008 with ONLY 158 HOURS. As you would expect the soft goods show little to no wear. M/V "Sea Chelle" was fully serviced in the spring of 2023, with all Fluids and Filters, Zincs, and a Bottom Job w/ Prop Speed on the running gear. And a rebuild of both turbos has just been recently completed. Sea Chelle offers a beautiful hi-gloss cherry interior, dark cocoa upholstery, and an entertainment center only found in the 2007s and up. She is truly one to see & the owner says... Let's Make a Deal.

Davit on bridge and RIB included with sale
Raymarine E120's in PH & E80's on Fly Bridge

Luxurious Accommodations...The layout of the 56 Voyagers is absolutely perfect for the adventurous spirit. Her saloon welcomes entertaining large parties while at the same time providing a comfortable and intimate setting for the cruising couple. Three staterooms with a master suite fit for a king & queen with an ensuite split head, drawer storage for days, and several cedar-lined hanging lockers for extensive wardrobes. The stackable washer and dryer are also located in the master stateroom across from an oversized -queen berth with an interspring mattress that provides a good night's sleep. The galley layout is wonderful...enough counter space for a big Sunday buffet, refrigeration is provided by four large fridge and freezer drawers, there is a full-size microwave, a 3-burner induction cooktop, and of course a trash compactor to help tidy up.
Your VIP guests will be surrounded by comfort and their accommodations are 1st class as well. The forward VIP offers a center-line queen-size berth and to port is a third stateroom that offers twin bunks with a Pullman's berth; or it can be used as a seating/reading study area. The large forward head offers day access and can be entered through the VIP stateroom as well. These updates were highlighted by her large portlights found a mid-ship; three on the starboard side and two on the port side allowing an abundance of natural light to pour into the cabins below. The new saloon & pilot house revisions charm owners & guests with a modern interpretation of what a duel station motor yacht should be. Several other subtle updates separate the 2007 56' Carver Voyager from all other 50' - 60' motor yachts for long-range cruising. There is a lot to see here and her owners are motivated...schedule a walk-through and make your best offer..."Sea-Chelle" awaits.

56 FLY - The Absolute Charisma
56 FLY – Charisma is a proven mix of engineering innovation, Italian design and a passion for details: it stands out with its personality, comfort and versatility, captivating lines and on-board living space, for you to experience the pleasure of the sea freely and to fully enjoy its boundless panorama.
“ Charisma ” encapsulates the essence of 56 FLY, which brings together and builds on the most successful features of previous boats. Universal and recognizable, but also unique and personal: charisma means many details and nuances that anyone can relate to. The charisma of a boat with a strong personality inspiring enthusiasm and energy, attracting others with its prestige, but most importantly, a boat that invites the owner to experience its charm and discover their reason why it is everything they had always wanted.
The strong personality of Absolute 56 FLY is expressed in its striking lines as well as in the interiors, featuring comfortable, refined and highly practical spaces .
Numerous storage areas make life easier and comfortable on board, while keeping things tidy in the sleeping area as well as in the living area. There is also a fully equipped, modernly designed kitchen and an area for a washer-dryer in the lower deck hall way to make sure you will never miss being at home.
The sleeping area will provide plenty of room to sleep in comfort. The full-beam owner’s cabin in the bow is designed to ensure privacy and convenience, as well as outstanding views through large windows. Its modern interiors are embellished with sophisticated features, transparent details between the cabin and bathroom, and textural contrasts. As spacious as a second owner’s cabin, the VIP cabin is also full beam. A comfortable third cabin with single beds and a double crew cabin complete the sleeping area. With no inner steps, all lower deck cabins make the most of heights and volumes, with surprisingly large windows for unrivalled morning views , with plenty of natural light flooding in.
Natural light and beautiful views are a highlight to enjoy in every area of the boat: the boundaries between the boat and the sea are blurred by transparent panels in the cockpit area, as well as by the open railing, offering excellent visibility from the main deck. The visual experience becomes even more immersive thanks to large electric windows , to enjoy the view even when you are comfortably seated in the saloon, while also bringing some fresh air in.
With a focus on versatility , living space , as well as environmental sustainability , 56 FLY proudly continues the revolution that started with the Flybridge range Generation 2022 . The solar panels built into the hard top become a valuable resource providing superior comfort when you stop in your favorite cove, reducing noise, vibrations, emissions and consumption, and ensuring greater autonomy with a diesel generator.
Thanks to the side door next to the console panel and a third helm station in the cockpit, boat steering is comfortable, efficient and safe, with superior helm station ergonomics. The high standards of Absolute dashboards are known to ensure unparalleled visibility, complete and easily accessible equipment, as well as cozy seating for both offshore sailing and maneuvering in the port.
Enjoy a comfortable seafront sundeck and sofa in the bow for a relaxing day at sea, or as pacious flybridge, just as on larger boats. The cockpit is roomy and with no fixed elements , so it can be fitted with modular furnishings according to your taste and needs.
A trip aboard 56 FLY.

HYLAS 56 YACHTS FOR SALE
The Hylas 56 was designed and built to replace one of the best cruising yachts ever built, the Hylas 54. Replacing a well respected model is always an incredible challenge for builders and designers. To build a boat that would be a little better in many ways but not sacrifice any of the exemplar characteristics that made the Hylas 54 so well loved was nearly an impossible task. However, the combined efforts of Hylas, the Frers design team, as well as Hylas yacht owners managed to create just such a boat.
2015 Hylas 56
Built for experienced sailors who expect quality craftsmanship and excellent performance, Odette will always exceed exceptions.
Epic Journey is a joy to behold and even more inviting to sail. What make this Hylas 56 even more appealing is the high level of care lavished upon her by her first two owners.
Aquaticus is undoubtedly the most highly specified Hylas 56 created. A fast boat that is beautiful to look at and functional in every way possible. One of a kind and a true sailing yacht, Aquaticus stands out amongst other boats in her class.

When considering a brokerage to sell your Hylas, the top choice is clear. The Hylas Collection by Collection Yachts gives owners not only expertise regarding the market and unmatched knowledge of Hylas Yachts, but also the most extensive yacht marketing available.

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily
A celebration turned into tragedy for a british tycoon when the storm sank the vessel off sicily. six people remain missing., by henry austin and corky siemaszko | nbc news • published august 21, 2024 • updated on august 21, 2024 at 4:08 pm.
Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.
The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .
The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.
“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.
British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.
Missing revealed as divers search superyacht that sank in storm off Sicily
British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily
Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.
“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”
Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.
On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.
“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .
The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.
“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.
What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.
“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”
The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.
Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”
The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.
Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .
Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.
Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.
In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.
“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .
Henry Austin reported from London and Corky Siemaszko from New York City.

Captain describes moment British technology tycoon’s luxury yacht started to sink off Sicily
Captain Karsten Borner has recalled the tragic moments he witnessed the capsizing of a luxury yacht after it was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off the Sicilian capital Palermo.
Search and rescue operations were under way on Monday 19 August after one man died and six people were missing after a 56-meter-long (184-ft) sailboat, which was British registered, sank with 22 people on board shortly before sunrise.
British technology tycoon Mike Lynch is missing after the luxury superyacht sank, sources have said.
The yacht had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, representing British, American and Canadian nationalities, the Italian coast guard said.
The coastguard named the yacht as the Bayesian, built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008.

Quintessentially Oyster, and one of our most successful models built, the 56 is a fantastic ocean cruiser, compact and agile to be easily handled by two, whilst also being versatile enough to accommodate a host of guests, and even crew, in comfort with ease.
Piperita, built in 2000, is a family-owned yacht that has been handed down through the generations from father to son. Lightly used, never chartered, and never having crossed the Atlantic, Piperita has very low hours to the engine and generator. With a specification perfectly equipped for short-handed sailing and effortless onboard handling, Piperita is easy in and out of port. Featuring an electric passerelle, remote windlass control, davits, outboard crane, bow thruster, new domestic batteries, and a great solar setup to name a few, she has a number of unique features that make her an attractive bluewater cruiser.
Below deck, typical of all Oyster’s, Piperita has an abundance of space, both functional and practical to fulfil a multitude of uses. With seven berths in four cabins, the forth converting conveniently to a workshop, Piperita is classically presented in teak, with warming light blue upholstery throughout. A home from home experience with the benefits of being able to change the scenery, Piperita is a great yacht for all uses.
Recently benefitting from out of the water works including underwater hull blasting and re-antifouling, all seacocks and anodes replaced, plus works to the engine, she is in the process of being upgraded.
Lying in Trapani, Sicily, and just a short sail from the stunning Egadi and Aeolian Islands, Piperita is in a fantastic location. Early viewing recommended.

Mike Lynch and daughter among missing after yacht sinks: What we know about disaster - and 'alarming' potential cause
The British-flagged luxury vessel named Bayesian was carrying 22 people when it got into difficulty off the coast of Sicily. Six people have now been confirmed dead, with one still missing.

Six bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.
Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.
Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.
Follow latest updates on the superyacht sinking
What might have caused the sinking?
The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.
It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.
Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.
The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.
"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.
Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.
The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.
What are waterspouts?
Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.
Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.
They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.
Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".
"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.
"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."
Who owns the yacht?
The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued.
Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.
In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.
HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.
Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?
The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.
Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.
Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.
"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.
The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.
Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed they all died in the disaster on Thursday.
The yacht's captain James Calfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.
Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News.
During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.
What do we know about the vessel?
The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife.
It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.
It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.
It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.
The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.
It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.
Mr Schanck said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications. He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK maritime coastguard agency regulations before its voyage.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.
The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.
On Sunday, the boat was seen off the coast of Cefalu before it travelled towards Porticello, MarineTraffic data shows.
In the days before, the yacht travelled around four of the Aeolian islands, just north of Sicily.
It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

After yacht sinks, experts say Mediterranean growing more dangerous
By Antonella Cinelli and Gavin Jones
ROME (Reuters) - The shipwreck of a luxury yacht moored off the coast of Sicily is the latest sign that the Mediterranean is becoming a more dangerous sea to sail in, climate experts and skippers say.
One man died and six people are still missing, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, after the Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-ft) sailboat, was hit by a ferocious storm on Monday, sinking in a matter of minutes.
Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent in a sea used as a summer playground for millions of tourists, including a wealthy few sailing its waters on superyachts.
Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to the shipwreck was about 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), almost three degrees more than normal.
"This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," he told Reuters.
The changes in "Mare Nostrum" (Our Sea), as the ancient Romans called the Mediterranean, are also being noticed by experienced skippers such as Massimo Aramu, who runs the Akua sailing school on the coast near the Italian capital.
Currently sailing around Greece, Aramu said he did not like navigating Italy's Tyrrhenian coast around Sicily or the Spanish Balearic islands because there are "often critical situations with little warning".
Last week, a storm similar to the one that sank the Bayesian hit the Balearic archipelago, which includes the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca, leaving several yachts washed up ashore.
Giuliano Gallo, a former skipper who crossed the Atlantic and has written several books on sailing, said the Mediterranean was becoming more like the Caribbean, which has areas that many boats steer clear of at certain times of the year.
"But things are less predictable in the Mediterranean," he said.
Another sign of the more erratic weather in the Mediterranean was seen a year ago when thousands of people were killed in Libya by flash floods triggered by a so-called medicane - a supercharged Mediterranean storm fuelled by warmer seas.
Karsten Borner, the captain of a boat that was moored alongside the Bayesian but escaped harm, said Monday's storm had been "very violent, very intense, a lot of water and I think a turning system like a tornado".
He also blamed more frequent episodes of intense heat during the summer months for playing a role in causing such storms.
"The water is ... way too hot for the Mediterranean and this causes for sure heavy storms, like we had one week ago on the Balearics, like we had two years ago in Corsica and so on," he said.

How did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Experts say weather was just one factor
Divers searching for 6 missing people locate 5 bodies inside wrecked yacht's hull.
Social Sharing
A complicated search effort is underway deep beneath the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Italy, where a superyacht sank early Monday during a fierce storm.
Dive crews are attempting to enter the wreck of the Bayesian, a 56-metre long British-flagged luxury vessel, which is sitting in some 50 metres of water near the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello.
Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew members on board were rescued. Divers searching for six people considered missing, including British businessman Mike Lynch, located five bodies inside the yacht's hull on Wednesday, and retrieved four of them from the water.
Searchers previously recovered the body of Recaldo Thomas, the ship's Canadian-Antiguan cook, in the water not far from where the Bayesian sank.

- Canadian dead, several others missing after superyacht capsizes off Sicilian coast
Questions have emerged about why a boat designed to handle severe weather sank so rapidly and whether or not some of its features could've been a factor in its demise. Maritime experts say investigations may, in time, reveal what led to the disaster.
"There needs to be an investigation as to why this happened, what went wrong and, you know, how to prevent it in the future cases," said Simon Boxall, an oceanographer and senior lecturer at the University of Southampton in England.
Canadian dead, others missing after superyacht sinks near Sicily
How did the bayesian sink so quickly.
Grainy footage from closed-circuit cameras on the shore broadcast on the website of the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper showed the Bayesian's majestic mast just before it disappeared.
Karsten Borner, captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, told The Associated Press he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the storm came in.
"A moment later, she was gone," he said.
The survivors told the rescuers they went flat on the water "and were sunk in two minutes."
Boxall said vessels rely on being able to steer and navigate stormy seas, but the Bayesian was anchored and stationary, which likely made it more vulnerable to the storm and, potentially, a waterspout , or mini tornado that creates a whirlwind over the surface of the sea.
He said it was also dark, meaning "you wouldn't see this sort of very unique event coming towards you."
CCTV footage shows yacht Bayesian as deadly storm strikes
"It's a freak of nature," Boxall said. "I think the fact that so many have survived, so far, is probably a miracle."
Tom Sharpe, a retired Royal Navy commander and defence commentator, told CBC News the weather was likely not the only issue.
He says it's rare that a weather event like this takes down a boat.
"There's nearly always a sequence [of events]," he said in an interview from Guildford, England, explaining that everything from safety protocols to the culture on board the vessel needs to be taken into account.
Was the boat's design part of the problem?
The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian luxury yacht maker Perini Navi.
Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic, told Reuters that a boat the size of the Bayesian could only sink so rapidly by taking on a huge amount of water.
He suggested that one or more portholes, windows or other openings may have been broken or smashed open by the waterspout, letting in water. There has also been media speculation that a major hatch might have been inadvertently left open.
Reports have also highlighted that the Bayesian featured a 72-metre mast — one of the tallest in the world.
Ratti said an unusually tall mast is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm.
A second expert, structural engineer Filippo Mattioni, was also skeptical about the suggestion the boat may have sunk due to a broken mast, which likely would have caused major damage smashing against the hull.
Fire department diver Marco Tilotta told the newspaper Il Messaggero that the wreck was "apparently intact," with "no gashes, no signs of impact." However, only half of the hull is visible to divers.
The Bayesian also had a retractable keel — the fin-like structure under the hull that helps stabilize boats and acts as a counterweight to the mast.
Both Ratti and Mattioni wondered if the yacht had been anchored with the keel up, reducing the vessel's depth under water and making it less stable. Ratti said strong winds might have caused the boat to start oscillating wildly, "like a pendulum," putting exceptional strain on the mast.
Sharpe pointed out that a mast the size of the Bayesian's is designed for a massive sail, and without that sail raised and catching the wind, the gusts likely would've had a negligible impact on the aluminum pole.
- What we know about the capsized superyacht off the Sicilian coast
He instead suggested the anchor may have played a pivotal role.
"My kind of working assumption is that she was probably a bit further in at anchor, and it's very likely, in these sort of conditions, that her anchor dragged," he said.
In such a situation, he said, a crew is better off steering toward the anchor to stabilize the vessel or raising the anchor and heading out to sea to ride out the storm.
"They might have got caught in that middle ground where they're not on a particularly good anchorage, but the anchor is now controlling the bow of the ship."
Sicily superyacht rescue: What divers are up against | About That
What caused the extreme weather.
Although Sharpe says the weather is unlikely the sole cause of the sinking, he notes the Mediterranean isn't the calm sea often pictured in travel brochures.
"It can get pretty nasty," he said.
The type of storm that struck Monday is fuelled by warm water and the Mediterranean is warmer than ever, said Boxall, noting there's been about a three and a half degree increase in the 20-year average temperature.
'The ship behind us was gone,' says captain who rescued yacht passengers
Climatologists say global warming is making such violent and unexpected tempests more frequent.
Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to the shipwreck was about 30 C.
"This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms," he told Reuters.

Search Resumes for British Mogul and 5 Others After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily
The body of the vessel’s cook was recovered while divers searched the hull of the Bayesian for passengers, including the tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch.

Deep-sea divers with Italy’s firefighter corps resumed their search on Tuesday for six missing passengers — including a British software mogul and his daughter — of a yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily the previous day.
Twenty-two people were on board the 180-foot British-flagged sailing yacht, the Bayesian, which was anchored near the port of Porticello, when it was hit by what witnesses described as a waterspout, a small tornado on water, during a sudden and violent storm.
Fifteen people who managed to get to a raft were rescued by the captain of a nearby sailing cruise ship. The body of the yacht’s cook, identified by news outlets as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was recovered on Monday. But several people are still unaccounted for, according to Salvatore Cocina, an official with Sicily’s civil protection agency.
Those still missing are Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur; his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.
Mr. Lynch was acquitted of fraud in a U.S. trial in June, ending a high-profile, decadelong legal battle against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett for $11 billion.
Mr. Lynch and the others went missing days after Mr. Lynch’s co-defendant at the fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, a former vice president of finance at Autonomy, was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said in a statement.
Prosecutors in the Italian city of Termini Imerese, east of where the yacht sank, are opening a formal investigation into the yacht’s sinking. Reached by telephone, the chief prosecutor declined to comment.
The search for the missing passengers began on Monday but was suspended late that night as crews found themselves limited to the bridge deck and items like furnishings “obstructing passage,” the firefighters’ corps wrote on social media .
When divers resumed the search on Tuesday, ships trawled the waters near the site, the corps said in a statement. The Italian Coast Guard also said in a statement that search operations were “continuing unabated,” with the deployment of helicopters. There was no evidence that gasoline was leaking from the yacht, the Coast Guard said.
The yacht was lying on its right side in about 165 feet of water, meaning that divers, working in pairs, could stay underwater for only about 12 minutes at a time, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters’ corps.
Divers were seeking a safe point of access to the vessel’s cabins. “Obviously, everything fell and the space is very tight,” Mr. Cari said, adding that the divers were having to remove obstacles, like furnishings and electrical wiring, that were “completely blocking passages.”
The firefighters’ corps said in a statement that it was impossible to verify whether people were inside the hull.
Mr. Cari said that several divers had been part of the search-and-rescue operations when the Costa Concordia, a cruise liner, capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in 2012, killing 32 people. It is considered one of the worst maritime disasters in modern Italian history.
“It’s like the Costa Concordia, but much smaller,” Mr. Cari said in a telephone interview, comparing the search operations. “In the Costa Concordia, we came across many obstacles but we somehow were able to overcome them. Here, the obstacles block the passages and have to be removed.” He added, “This makes it more difficult.”
Crews were also trying to raise the yacht, which experts will examine to try to determine why it sank. Until then, experts can only hypothesize what happened.
Karsten Borner, the captain of a ship, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which picked up the Bayesian’s 15 survivors, said in an interview that when the wind picked up around 4 a.m. Monday, the Bayesian was about 490 feet behind his vessel. Once the wind wound down, he said, he could not see the yacht anymore.
“My theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” Mr. Borner said.
Dario Boote, a ship structures and naval architecture professor at the University of Genoa, said: “Now I imagine that a whole series of lawsuits will be triggered, obviously to ascertain whether there is any responsibility, as always happens very unpleasantly in these situations.” He said, however, that in this case, responsibility might be hard to determine. “Clearly, only once the wreck is raised will we know more,” he added.
Several fishermen told Italian news outlets that they had witnessed a waterspout. Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, said they were relatively common in the Mediterranean, though their occurrence and intensity are unpredictable.
“Until one actually forms, you can’t start telling people where it is,” Mr. Inness said, or “how to get out of the way.”
The inclement weather — with lightning intermittently streaking through the sky — made it hard to know exactly why the yacht sank. Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lightning activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time the boat sank.
The Bayesian had one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world, according to its builder, Perini Navi. “Having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano. The type of intensity unleashed by a violent lightning storm “could have created a significant shock wave,” he added.
He, too, cautioned that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”
Modern yachts are built to withstand meteorological events of reasonable intensity, and all international naval registers suggest that new ships be designed for higher waves and more frequent and extreme weather events.
But “this seems a case of an unreasonable extreme event,” said Emilio Fortunato Campana, an expert in Naval Hydrodynamics at Italy’s National Research Council. “In that case, no ship is 100 percent safe,” he added. “I think the Titanic showed that nothing is unsinkable.”
