Le dernier Punch construit par le fameux chantier Multicap Caraïbes a été mis à l’eau en Martinique il y a déjà 10 ans… S’ensuivit une longue absence de la marque reconnue pour ses catamarans construits en bois/époxy, robustes et dépouillés. Le constructeur Christian Hernandez et le cabinet d’architectes Mortain/Mavrikios ont décidé de relancer une gamme complète. Cette fois, les catamarans seront construits au sud du Portugal à Vila Real de Santo António, sur l’embouchure du fleuve Guadiana.

Les premiers dessins disponibles dévoilent quatre modèles – Punch 12.70, 13.70, 15.10 et enfin 17.10. Il s’agit d’évolutions dont le design et l’ergonomie sont modernisés. Pour les trois premiers modèles, c’est surtout le principe constructif qui est innovant avec des fonds en forme grâce à l’adoption de strip-planking et des bordés constitués de panneaux en composites construits à plat et sans moules. Christian Hernandez souhaite également s’engager dans une démarche écoresponsable en utilisant de la mousse PET recyclée et de la résine biosourcée. Quant au Punch 17.10, il reste très proche du 1700 (voir essai dans MM137) ; « l’ancien modèle était construit entièrement en strip-planking et il en sera de même pour le nouveau », nous confirme Alain Mortain. Avec un ratio voilure/poids de 12,19 m2/t, le catamaran amiral laisse augurer de bonnes performances. Tous les modèles devraient être personnalisables selon les souhaits du client. Nautitech 40

Competition is fierce in the world of catamarans, so to stay in the game, a builder has to stake out market territory. Nautitech Catamarans is laying claim to that segment of multihull devotees interested in the sailing as well as the après-sail aspects of cruising. Telling first impressions of the Nautitech 40 are the fine-entry, high-freeboard bows and the twin steering stations, one on the stern of each hull.
On the water in Miami, twin 29-horsepower Volvo saildrives provided typical cat agility for maneuvering around the marina, but we learned quickly not to be shy when applying power to counter the effect of a locally gusty crosswind on the high freeboard. Motoring out of Government Cut into the eye of the wind, the boat was unfazed by the mix of tide rip and boat wakes.
Under sail, the helm stations came into their own, giving the helmsman wind-on-the-face input to back up the instruments. Sailing upwind in a fluky, light southeasterly breeze, we saw steady speeds above 6 knots with bursts to over 7 in the puffs. The tacking angle was about 100 degrees, limited by the sheeting angle of the genoa, but with fixed shoal-draft keels, footing off is likely more profitable than pinching anyway.
The long, deck-mounted traveler permits incremental adjustments to the powerful roachy mainsail, and the double-ended mainsheet can be tended from either helm. Because main and genoa share the same winches, tacking entails a little ballet with the sheets and stoppers. Doubling up on the winches would simplify maneuvers and provide more options for handling such add-ons as a preventer or a light-air funsail.
Boathandling arrangements are simple and seamanlike. The main halyard and reefing lines are tended from the mast, and it’s an easy step up to the cabin roof to stow or deploy the sail. No centerline nacelle or strut breaks the trampolined expanse between the bows. Hefty cleats integrated into the crossbeam anchors stand ready for bridles or mooring lines.
Inside the house, the saloon provides a second large social area. Considering that the boat can be set up with four double cabins, the galley is small, but from its location on the aft bulkhead, the cook can converse with the crew through a large sliding window.
Even indoors, the saloon has a pleasant, outdoorsy, summer-cottage feel due to the light through the wraparound windows and reflected off large areas of white fiberglass.
Down in the hulls, wood paneling lends a warm tone to the sleeping quarters. Space is a little tight down here, a measure of the slippery slender hulls, but by judicious use of the bridgedeck volume, the designers have created comfortably sized cabins with queen-size athwartships berths. In the charter version, there are two in each hull. In the owner version, which would make a commodious liveaboard vessel, the starboard hull is devoted to a suite: A huge fore-and-aft berth fills the stern, a large head and separate shower occupy the forward part, and, in between, there’s a settee, a desk, and copious storage for clothes. Two extra crewmembers or children can be accommodated in small cabins in each bow.
A simple layout below, clean-cut lines above, and neatly sculpted details everywhere suggest that the Nautitech 40 will appeal to sportif catamaran sailors, while their children will find the one-piece trampoline irresistible.

Punch, la gamme de catamarans de croisière en contreplaqué redémarre
Après prés de 10 ans d'interruption, Christian Hernandez annonce le redémarrage de la production des catamarans Punch dessinés par Alain Mortain. Ce n'est plus aux Caraïbes, mais au Portugal que seront fabriqués ces multicoques en contreplaqué, largement modernisés pour l'occasion.
La renaissance d'un chantier est toujours une bonne nouvelle. Surtout quand il s'agit d'un chantier iconique comme Multicap Caraïbes. C'est de ce chantier basé en Martinique qu'a été produite la gamme des catamarans Punch. Des catamarans volontairement rustiques, fabriqués en contreplaqué époxy et dessiné par Alain Mortain. Des engins qui se sont toujours démarqués de la grande production par leurs performances, leur confort. Des catamarans plébiscités pour le voyage dont certains ont fait le tour du monde . Construits dans les années 1990, environ 25 exemplaires naviguent encore aujourd'hui.
Des catamarans iconiques
Mais le dernier Punch a vu le jour en 2013 avant la fermeture du chantier en Martinique . Christian Hernandez, le père de ces catamarans, relance la marque en 2022. Mais cette fois à partir du sud du Portugal. Le premier modèle, un Punch 1270, verra sa construction débuter en mai 2022. Pour cette occasion, Christian Hernandez et Alain Mortain seront présents au salon du Multicoque à La Grande Motte du 20 au 23 avril (hélas sans stand) pour rencontrer les amateurs de catamaran .
Un 1270 dans la lignée du 1250
Pour cette renaissance, les voiliers vont un peu évoluer. Le premier de la lignée sera un Punch 1270, une modernisation du 1250. Pour améliorer les fonds de coque (auparavant à bouchain avec un fond plat), le 1270 sera en strip planking ce qui autorise les formes rondes. Pour faciliter la construction (et diminuer son prix), les bordés sont en composite (et non en contreplaqué qui demande une structure complexe avec des lisses si l'on ne veut pas mettre du CP trop épais pour ne pas grever le poids). Ces brodés restent des formes développables et sont construits à plat, sans moule. De la mousse de PET recyclée et de la résine biosourcée seront aussi utilisées.
Les amateurs de ces catamarans simples et performants devraient s'y retrouver dans le 1270. En effet, le bateau va rester dans un poids raisonnable malgré l'augmentation du volume des coques (il est annoncé à 5,2 tonnes lège). Pour le reste, tout est modernisé à bord comme l'accès aux jupes, le carré de plain-pied avec le cockpit ou des surfaces vitrées plus généreuses.
Une gamme démarrant à 1270 est déjà annoncée avec un 1370, un 1510 et un 1710.
