Feadship Information Worth Knowing
With a population of just 17 million people, The Netherlands has an outsized influence on the Global Yachting stage, with the highest number of world class yacht builders per capita than any other nation, all wedged into a country smaller than the size of West Virginia.
Dutch Yacht Building
Founded after WWII in 1949, to help re-ignite the Dutch Yacht building industry, it was a marketing initiative aimed at the US market and was initially formed by Henri de Voogt, a naval architect, in association with Van Lent and De Vries family boat yards. By 1968 there were 7 companies in Feadship, including the original 3 companies.
Today, Feadship consists of the 2 original founding shipyards, plusde Voogt the Naval Architecture and Engineering firm Feadship have acquired a lot of their original sub-contracting companies, to bring a lot of the disciplines “in-house”, with a combined work force of some 2,300+ workers.
Both companies received their “Royal” Dutch designations, which means continuous lineage and operation of 100 years – thus now Royal De Vries (designation in 2006) and Royal Van Lent (in 2001). The Van Lent company was sold to LVMH in 2001, while Royal De Vries still remains in the family.
It is quite remarkable that 2 privately and separately owned companies, still manage to maintain a common public persona and intimately coordinate sales and logistics after all these decades.
De Vries Yard
Currently De Vries operates 2 yacht building facilities – the original facility, located in the small town of Aalsmeer, just south of Amsterdam, consists of 50,000m2/538,000ft2 of construction sheds and has launched the 92m “Aquarius” in 2016, the largest yacht built at the facility . Actually it is not so much length that restricts the size of construction at this yard, but beam, which due to the size of locks that have to be navigated to get the vessels to sea.
The 2 nd facility operated by De Vries is located in Makkum, an hours drive north of Amsterdam, which was purchased from Amels/Damen Shipyards in 2005. This facility, located on 17+ acres of land, boasts a drydock and building shed of some 170m/557’ in length and is capable of building yachts of 120m+ and indeed is where De Vries has launched its largest yachts from – the largest to date is “Madame Gu” at 99m, which was launched in 2013, however there is a 110m vessel under construction that is due for delivery late 2018.
Yacht yards use “yard build numbers” to initially refer to the new builds, which of course can be used to trace the history of each vessel. De Vries use 2 different numbering systems to differentiate between the 2 yards, with vessels being built at Makkum started with yard #1001 (launched as “Ocean Victory”, now “Ebony Shine”).
While at the Aalsmeer facility, the company is up to yard number #701, a 51m Explorer vessel.
Royal Van Lent Yard
The original facility, located at De Kaag Island, a small village south of Amsetrdam, dates back to 1849! This facility has built the longest Feadship launched to date – “Symphony” at 101.5m/333’, in 2015, for the Chairman of LVMH. Royal Van Lent is building a new facility in Amsterdam, which will be capable of building the largest Feadship’s (up to 160m/525’). Consisting of a 170m dock/shed, the facility is due for completion in 2019 and is already rumored to be the site for construction of a 118m yacht, the biggest in Dutch yacht building history. More information on Feadship’s new facility here .
Feadship currently have 17 vessels at various stages, in construction, (10 at De Vries and 7 at Van Lent), across the 3 (soon to be 4) facilities and like most yards use a combination of sub-contractors and interior disciplines to build their yachts. As previously stated, over the years the companies have acquired a number of their major sub-contractors:
Scheepswerf Slob – A steel hull and aluminum metal fabrication facility
Van der Loo interiors (although the majority of interior refitting is still carried out by independent, high end yacht furniture companies, such as List and Struik & Hammerslag)
Akerboom Yacht Equipment – manufacturers of Cranes, davits, gangways, passarelles, hatches and hinged platforms, etc.
While some disciplines are outsourced, the combined companies are predominantly Dutch and virtually everything is “bespoke” (custom built), right down to the hinges for doors, which are custom manufactured in house!
Most Feadships are custom designed and built as “one off” vessels, specifically for each individual client and offer a very varied cross section of styles and performance, from large steel displacement yachts to a 49m – 30kt all aluminum yacht currently in build at De Vries.
However over the years Feadship have built several “lines” of “semi custom” vessels – i.e. vessels with a common hull, superstructure and engineering package, but an ability to customize the interior décor/layout. This includes the 45m series F45 (5 were launched). The latest model – the recently delivered 34m/111-113’ series motoryachts, the smallest Feadships being delivered for many years. The company only went ahead with this project when an existing client, who owned a larger Feadship asked them to build a smaller vessel. The company said they would, if the client could persuade 3 of his friends to also build a boat using the same platform! To date the company has built 5 x 34m yachts, the first being delivered in 2016.
While Feadship builds their yachts for customers around the world, their most important single consistent market, is still the USA, with some 50+ % of their production being sold into the States on a regular basis.

Feadship is recognized as the world leader in pure custom superyacht builds; each bespoke Feadship is a single-model yacht, as individual as the owner who commissioned her. Each design project begins with a blank canvas and entails creating a magnificent motor yacht that is unlike any other in the world, a one-off luxury yacht that exclusively and uniquely reflects the character and intended use of each client. The Feadship design philosophy is to begin fresh and assume that everything is possible; solutions, not sacrifices are the key to make a client’s vision become a reality.

Royal Van Lent Shipyard (one of the Royal Dutch Shipyards group), builder of the high-end Feadship brand is one of the many luxury lifestyle houses of LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), the global leader in select luxury brands. The century-long heritage and ultimate fusion of style, performance, and perfect craftsmanship of the bespoke Feadship yachts is in perfect synergy with the LVMH business model of long-term vision, values, heritage, creativity, and excellence driving current and future success. The Feadship Group was formed in 1949 as a marketing partnership of six Dutch shipyards—de Vries Lentch, Van de Stadt, Witsen & Vis, Akerboom, De Vries Schoepsbouw, and Van Lent Shipyard, plus De Voogt Naval Architects.
After WWII collapsed the European market for recreational vessels, the Van Lent family envisioned an opportunity with the booming American market and introduced Feadship to the American public at the 1951 New York Boat Show, impressing Show judges and clients with the high quality and especially, with the skillful use of steel and aluminum, which was rarely used by North American yacht builders at that time. As orders poured in, Feadship no longer built wooden boats after 1955 and was firmly established in the American market, having attracted the attention of the wealthy and famous, including publishing magnate, Malcolm Forbes, who commissioned the first of his three Feadships named The Highlander, in 1957. Today many of these classic yachts from the 1960s are leading members of the Feadship Heritage Fleet, an independently operated owners group established in 2013 for social gatherings.
In addition to new custom superyacht construction, Feadship designs and builds custom Tenders for continuity with the Feadship experience and offers dedicated charter and refit services exclusively for Feadships. To maintain brand value, Feadship offers a Certificate of Authenticity program by Feadship experts to owners and captains for a comprehensive inspection and evaluation of older Feadships. Those that have been maintained to builder standards of perfection will be presented the Feadship Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring brand value to a buyer of a preowned Feadship.

Brand History
Feadship Yachts came into being in 1968 when brothers Alessandro and Norberto Feadship created the first nautical division of the family business, then a specialist luxury car dealership. Three years later, in 1971, at the Genoa Boat Show, their first model, a wooden motor-sailer, was greeted with great acclaim. This 10-metre yacht, equipped with both sails and an engine, was particularly comfortable and safe for leisure cruising. Their intuitive flair enabled Feadship Yachts to figure on the list of the world’s most prestigious boatyards.
In 1975, the Feadship brothers decided to abandon cars altogether in order to commit themselves fully to the nautical world and the next decade saw the great leap forward – the switch from sail to engine power. In 1982 the first Feadship motor-yacht made its debut and the company began producing boats for sport fishing, with an open and flying bridge, bearing witness to all the revolutionary changes that have transformed today’s boat-building industry: the stern bridge, the up-and-over salon windows that open onto the cockpit and the internal corridor from the salon to the flying-bridge.
In the 1990s, Feadship was dedicated to research and development in nautical engineering with the start-up of the in-house engineering division and winning performances in offshore races. Subsequent years have seen the range increase to its current size, but the story doesn’t end here, as there is constant renewal with state-of-the-art design solutions.
The Feadship Group is a world leader in the design, construction and sale of luxury motor yachts, with a unique portfolio of prestigious and exclusive brands, all distinguished by their distinctive and highly complementary characteristics: Feadship Yachts, Riva, Pershing, Itama, Mochi Craft, CRN and Custom Line.

Best Feadship Yachts for Sale
Feadship is a pedigree Dutch shipyard and one of the most successful luxury yacht builders in the world. Delivering yachts since 1949, Feadship is renowned for high-quality craftsmanship and their boats are among the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. Specializing in premium craftsmanship of some of the largest superyacht builds in the world, Feadship’s continuous evolution in the design, engineering and construction of their vessels has made them one of, if not the market leader in the large, custom superyacht sector.
History of Feadship Yachts
The award-winning Dutch yacht builder comprises of two shipyards, De Vries and Van Lent, and the naval architecture firm De Voogt. Their origins predate the 20thcentury – the roots of the Van Lent shipyard go back to 1849, while De Vries opened its doors in 1906 and De Voogt designs go back to 1912. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the three entities joined forces, along with several other Dutch shipyards, to form Feadship (which is an acronym for First Export Association of Dutch Shipyards) as an export association to promote their yachts to a thriving American market. In fact, up until 1973, a Feadship was defined as a yacht sold to an American owner.
The seven yards were struggling in post-war Europe but were met with great success in America, thanks in part to their quality craftsmanship and finish, and the fact that they were made of steel, something the American market had not seen. Their success was also down to the fact that they offered completely custom designed yachts, such a concept was almost unique and a very attractive offering for the booming American market.
Following a period of success and massive growth in the industry as Western economies boomed, the Feadship shipyards underwent a series of mergers and by 1968 the Feadship brand was consolidated to become three original entities, comprising of the two shipyards De Vries and Van Lent, alongside De Voogt Naval Architects. Many of the descendants of the original three shipbuilding families still work for the company today.
Feadship’s yacht-building facilities are based in Aalsmeer, Makkum and Kaag, while the design and engineering center, De Voogt, is located in Haarlem. The Royal Van Lent yard on Kaag Island has two dry docks and two slipways up to 328 feet (100m). Over 300 craftsmen are based at the Kaag Island yard. The Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw facility is made up of a group of companies that operate two outfitting yards in Aalsmeer and Makkum; here more than 800 craftsmen build custom superyachts of 328-plus feet (100m) in length. 250 of these craftsmen work at the De Vries Scheepsbouw Makkum shipyard facility building yachts up to 393 feet (120m) in length.
Feadship also launched a fourth new construction and refit facility in the heart of the Dutch capital in late 2019, where they have the facilities to build yachts of up to 525-feet (160m) in length.
Since more than half of Feadship’s clients are American, the brand operates an office out of Fort Lauderdale. This office runs sales, acts as the global center of operations for Feadship Yachts Charter Design. It also acts as the point of contact for the U.S., South America and the Caribbean. You can visit the office or check out our online selection to see a wide selection of Feadship yachts for sale.

To date, Feadship has delivered a fleet of more than 425 vessels, the majority of which have been motor yachts. Wherever there are Feadship yachts for sale you will find customers of the highest profile seeking the highest quality. Feadship yachts have attracted numerous famous owners and have won countless awards for their quality builds and innovative projects. Between 1957 and 1986 they built three yachts for Malcolm Forbes, president of Forbes Magazine, including the iconic steel-hulled THE HIGHLANDER, which is said to have inspired Henry Ford II into commissioning the 109-foot (33.2m) SANTA MARIA (1963).
Since then they have been responsible for the build of iconic vessels the likes of the 221-foot (67.3m) NEW HORIZON L (which at the time of her launch in 1983 was one of the most expensive yachts ever built), 172-foot (51m) GALLANT LADY (2007), the 154-foot (46.6m) AZTECA (1983), the 282-foot (86m) ECSTASEA (2004), the 255-foot (78m) VENUS (2012), the 324-foot (99m) MADAME GU (2013), the 333-foot (101.5m) SYMPHONY (2015) (the biggest ever Feadship built), the 301-foot (92m) AQUARIUS (2016), the 274-foot (83.5m) first eco-friendly superyacht SAVANNAH (2016), the 241-foot (73.6m) explorer-style SHERPA (2018), the recently delivered 305-foot (93m) LADY S, and the most secure superyacht in the world, the 203 foot (62m) SEA OWL .
In order to protect the Feadship pedigree, the renown luxury yacht builder recently launched their own Refit & Services facility. Combining all the services previously offered by the individual Feadship yards, the new company offers major refits in the Netherlands and has partnered with four leading yards in the Mediterranean and US for services. To continue the protection of the Feadship heritage, Feadship also formed the Feadship Heritage Fleet. Uniting the owners of classic Feadship yachts around the world, the association is restricted to owners of registered Feadships built more than 30 years ago.
