The rudder is the part that goes in the water, and the tiller is the part you hold on to. The two pins that hold the rudder to the boat are called pintles, and they fit into metal rings at the back of the boat called gudgeons. We often leave the rudders attached to the Rhodes 19s because it saves time. But when there are storms in the area we stow the rudders so they are not damaged. And sometimes when racing we stow the rudders to prevent barnacles from growing on them. So you may find that you need to attach the rudder before you can sail. Be careful when lifting the rudder because it is awkward and heavy. And they don't float, so you may want a crewmate to help you. Don't let it drag on the deck or it will leave a mark. To get started, flip the handle over so it's on the same side as the pins. Then carefully lower the rudder over the back of the boat and try to get the bottom pin in the bottom hole. The water might fight you a little, so be patient. The bottom pin is longer than the top pin, so if you don't put the bottom pin all the way, you should be able to get the top pin in without the bottom pin coming loose. Click to expand  Doc_holidayI know this is a dumb question/statement but the specs say the Mac 26s has a minimum draft of 1.25'. Would anyone dare go into 2' of water with the rudder pulled up that far? Sure you can pull the keel up, but if you have a shear pin on your rudder, your minimum draft is now like 3.5 feet and without it, one might break a tiller arm, rudder or his back steering it.  you can steer with the rudder straight back, but if you try to turn too hard you'll snap something (probably the tiller). I have had to do this a few times.  I find it easier to steer with the help of the outboard when the rudder is up. Just make sure you turn them the same way....lol I haven't exactly measured but I would guess that I have been in water that shallow using the motor only. Not sailing. I can steer with either the motor or the rudder. (some couple them together and steer with both) When steering with the rudder just make don't try to make any sudden moves. If you need to turn suddenly, use the motor. That's one of major advantages our boats have over fixed keel boats. Water ballast goes one step better. If you get stuck and can't pull yourself off, you can dump the ballast and then pull yourself off. That's 1200 lbs you can dump when needed. Pintles have a pin, while gudgeons have a hole for the pin. Either component can be attached to the rudder or transom, but the standard configuration is pintles on the rudder and gudgeons on the transom.
