Hanstaiger X1, a trimaran with the appearance of a spaceship sold in 3 copies

trimaran by hanstaiger

Large trimarans with habitable sails are rare on the market. The Palma Boat Show 2022 was the opportunity to discover a newcomer on the market, Hanstaiger, a shipyard created in 2015 whose first model, the X1, is a trimaran with a strange air of space ship.

High-end infusion and carbon construction

The Hanstaiger X1 is a limited edition trimaran that will be produced in only 3 copies. The shipyard based in Alicante, Spain , even assures that it will deconstruct the hull molds. With a length of 19.72 m, the multihull has a beam of 10 m, a displacement of 40 tons and a draft of 0.92 m thanks to its retractable centerboard. The hull is built in one piece, in infusion with a composite of vinylester, carbon fiber and Kevlar. The superstructure is made of carbon fiber and epoxy resin. If the construction method corresponds to the standards expected in high-end yachting , the design is quite striking.

Glazing in large quantities

The hulls are very high on the water and the shapes chosen for the design are angular, with sculpted surfaces. The ratio of glass to structure is also very important, as many glass surfaces are integrated into the superstructure and the roof. The result is a very bright interior.

A protected helm station

The Hanstaiger X1 is available as a sail or motor version. In the first configuration, the 245 m² sail area is modest for its size. In comparison, a Neel 65, of the same size, but lighter by about 10 tons, has 207 m² of sail area. The automated rigging is composed of a furling mast and a self-tacking jib. The sails are all electrically assisted: mainsheet, furling foceuros while hydraulic captive winches are hidden under the deck, in a sort of closed cockpit reminiscent of a fighter pilot.

This protected helm station positioned at the foot of the mast opens in good weather and provides protection in rough seas. It is the same on both versions. Three touch screens allow to manage all the navigation elements, on which are retransmitted the images captured by the 12 cameras installed on the trimaran . The shipyard assures that such an arrangement of the helm station allows to sail solo on the sailing version. This is reminiscent of the increasingly protected cockpits built into the heart of ocean racing boats.

A large flybridge

The upper deck has two wide gangways for moving around the boat . The large central flybridge of 50 m2 is equipped with sun loungers, sofas, an individual glass spa, a barbecue area and a central table for 10 people.

Sail or motor version

The sail version receives 2 Volvo D4-300 engines and the engine version 2 Volvo IPS 500, with a maximum option of 900 hp. The announced speeds are 20 knots under sail and 30 knots for the engine version.

Navigate independently

Approved in category A, the Hanstaiger X1 offers an autonomy of 600 miles (under engine) thanks to large fuel tanks: 1,600 L for the sail version, 7,000 L for the engine version. 1,200 L of water tanks and a 280 L/h watermaker ensure the water autonomy. Finally, solar panels integrated into the superstructure and a 50 kWh battery pack allow the boat to operate for several hours without using the generator.

80% of the interior space positioned on the main deck

The interior living space is 152 m2 (including a 72 m2 salon), the exterior is 77 m2, including a central flybridge of 35 m2 and a large extendable beach club of 25 m2. A design element that we are more used to seeing on large motor superyachts.

The headroom is impressive - between 2.3 and 3.2 meters - and 80% of the living space is on the main deck. All windows are "intelligent" and can be adapted to the owner's wishes: protection against heat, privacy

Le beach-club en version totalement décloisonnée

On either side of the central staircase are a fully equipped kitchen with ice maker and wine cellar and a cozy living room with large screen TV. The owner's cabin is spread over several levels. There is a 2x1.7 m bed on the bow and a desk on the stern, a bathroom with two sinks, a dressing table and a shower/hydromassage sauna. On the lower level, there is a large dressing room and an independent bathroom.

The hulls house the engine holds, the batteries, the tanks or the tender garage and the laundry room.

Three copies for sale

The Hanstaiger X1 is a semi-custom boat, some elements of which can be adapted to the owner's desires: number of cabins, flybridge layout, colors or materials. The marketing has been entrusted to the broker Northrop and Johnson and the price has been set at 4,250,000 euros.

Build And Structure

The hull of the vessel as well as the main deck, upper deck and bulkheads are constructed using the vacuum infusion technique.

The construction of the hull with reinforcements is infused in a single piece to reach a better interlaminar adhesion, greater structural strength and a reduction in weight.

The manufacture of the superstructure improves this process by achieving a structure made 100% of carbon fibre and epoxy resin, in a single vacuum infusion with the same reinforcement procedure. The scantling of the X1 is composed only of quadraxial and unidirectional fabrics, excluding the mat type fibres from the scheme. PVC core is used both in reinforcements and in the hull. A high temperature core resistant is used in areas of direct sunlight.

The construction is completed with a vinylester resin for wetting 100% of the fibres in the hull and an epoxy resin for the upper deck, bulkheads and the rest of the boat.

All structural calculations are based on Lloyd's Register of Shipping regulations.

The hull of the X1 is also coated with an ISO-NPG gel coat of RAL 7016 similar to the colour of the final finish.

The boat has a complete painted scheme in AWL GRIP.

- The X1 comes as standard with either 2 x VOLVO PENTA D4 300 HP engines (sailboat version)) or IPS 500 (motorboat version).

- Higher power engines up to IPS 900 can be installed.

- Two lines of conventional shafts with ceramic seal refrigerated by water.

- TEIGNBRIDGE adjustable pitch propellers made of aluminium and bronze.

The propellers provide the X1 with optimum performance with reduced noise, minimal vibrations and greater fuel savings, when compared to other propellers on the market. There is also a controllable pitch system to adapt to sailing or motoring.

- Integrated VOLVO PENTA glass cockpit system, with two touch screens on the bridge that simplifies the navigation system, as well as integrating all information in one place.

- The compartments of the main engine are equipped with forced ventilation as well as thermo-acoustic insulation.

Rigging (sailboat Version)

The main rigging consists of two parts:

- Furling mast

- Self-tacking jib

Both sails are assisted by an electronic system that will manage the BAMAR captive winches as well as the mainsail furling sheet, jib furling and mainsheets

- The configuration of rigging is designed with the premise that the boat can be crewed with only one person and from the bridge.

- The SPARCRAFT furling mast, is made of aluminium and finished in glossy black.

Deck Equipment

The LEWMAR electric windlass in stainless steel is located in the central hull at the bow of the boat, with 14 mm chain and remote control.

Polarising designs : Ugly or awesome? Trimaran Hanstaiger X1

 ·  11.04.2024

As if sent from the future: Hanstaiger X1

A boat like this could be straight out of a Batman film. The Hanstaiger X1 trimaran, manufactured in Spain, is bursting with unique features. This includes not only the central living area, which is modelled on a cathedral, but also a cockpit that is reminiscent of the interior of a spaceship. The first model of the X1 type can also be chartered exclusively for sailing. The quoted price is around 4.5 million euros.

More polarising designs:

  • Ace 30: First pictures from the test of the hot offshore racer
  • Sunbeam 32.1: bold shapes, smart solutions
  • Revolution 29 - a boat doesn't have to be pointed at the front

Hanstaiger X1 under sail or engine

The Hanstaiger X1 is offered in two versions, as a sailing yacht and as a motorboat. The sailing boat version is designed to reach speeds of up to 20 knots. The motorboat version should be able to reach up to 30 knots thanks to the more powerful engines. The sailboat is operated solely via electric winches.

Only three boats are to be built in total. The shipyard has not announced whether there is already a successor to the first boat.

The interior of the Hanstaiger X1 is designed like a luxury home. Thanks to the glass roof construction and the oversized side windows, natural light should flood into all areas of the boat. The layout is open-plan so that the crew can move around easily. The bathrooms alone would do credit to many hotels, considering the space, functionality and equipment that can be seen in the photos.

The cockpit of the Hanstaiger X1 is reminiscent of a fighter plane

The Hanstaiger X1 offers a 70 square metre lounge area that can be converted into a beach club, with an additional 25 square metre deck and swimming platform extension. The ceiling heights range from 2.3 to 3.2 metres. The owner's cabin is over 30 square metres in size. The flybridge is almost 35 square metres. 80 percent of the interior space is on one level.

Is the Hanstaiger X1 a greenhouse?

The many and sometimes large glass surfaces are a unique feature of the trimaran. However, they should not pose a problem in terms of heat build-up. To regulate the interior temperature and ensure privacy, the windows are equipped with intelligent glass technology that makes it possible to regulate and dim the sunlight entering the interior of the boat. Four large windows can be opened, which further enhances the beach club experience in the lounge.

A specially developed electrical system has massive 50 kW lithium batteries and thus the power to run the boat for hours without having to resort to the generator.

Another highlight of the Hanstaiger X1 is the helm station. It is reminiscent of the cockpit of a fighter plane and can be opened in good weather. The helmsman can monitor the boat via twelve cameras. However, there is no mention of an ejection seat on the shipyard website.

Hull length 19.72 m; width 10.00 m; weight 40.0 tonnes; sail area 245.5 m²

Unusual boats: trimaran Hanstaiger X1

The unique and stunning Hanstaiger X1 is almost certainly unparalleled and will not be unparalleled for the foreseeable future. This trimaran exists in only three copies and differs from its counterparts in its unique appearance and incredible decoration inside.

What is the Hanstaiger X1?

The boat's creator, John Ordovas, describes the trimaran as a cross between Lamborghini stuffing, the power of a fighter jet, and the luxury of a hotel's VIP room. Despite some pretentiousness of the statement, it is difficult to disagree with it. The trimaran Hanstaiger X1 is so beautiful and strange that it justifies the words of the creator.

The result is a trimaran that has about 85% of interior space on one level, reminiscent of a spacious, loft-style city apartment.

This is a bold design, because all the interior space is obtained by extending the superstructure to the very stern of the vessel. John shares his impressions: “It had some risky elements. We have removed the deck and cockpit in the usual sense. This is one of the design features that I am most proud of.

Instead of a classic cockpit, we have something like a “cockpit”. Yes, this is still the same bridge, even the cockpit, but, in my understanding, on such a trimaran, especially considering its design, there should be exactly the “cockpit” like on airplanes. You see, my grandfather and father were pilots, I fly myself. And I know how important the review is. That is why the cockpit is glazed and has the greatest possible view.”

Video about Hanstaiger X1

Design features Hanstaiger X1

According to the creator, the boat was specially designed so that there was no need to go to the bow. All boat and sail controls are located as close as possible to the cockpit or within walking distance from it. All winches, locking system, mainsail and staysail lifting - everything works on electronics. There is little rigging on deck.

Although this is clearly not a boat for the yachtsman who likes to tinker with the boat and rigging, performance was still a key parameter.

During the first sea trials off the coast of Alicante, where the shipyard is based, in difficult conditions, the yacht easily reached a speed of 15 knots only under the mainsail and staysail. John boasts: “My pride is being able to set the sails with a single button.”

Hull and sails Hanstaiger X1

X1 is equipped with a lifting daggerboard. A full keel was abandoned. The cases were created on the basis of a mixture of carbon foam and glass. The superstructure is completely made of carbon fiber. This kept the weight to a minimum, but the design is not light at 40 tons.

It is currently not possible to mount a large sail for sailing in light winds. However, John Ordovas says there is nothing in the design of the yacht that could prevent this.

In addition, John has been working on a dynamic stabilization system for a long time. The development of this technology will receive the Martini 7.0 catamaran, which we talked about here .

The essence of the technology is reduced to a complex gyroscopic system that “extinguishes” rolling on the water. The system works like flaps on an airplane wing.

Salon and decoration

In a way, focusing on the X1's performance is like looking at the sound system in a Bentley. It is from the salon on this yacht that it takes your breath away. The bold and unusual layout of the living quarters will also not leave you indifferent.

Salon area of 70 square meters is simply huge. The height of the cabin is some incredible 3 meters. Given these factors, the interior really feels impressive.

The galley is more like an open plan designer kitchen, with a dining table for eight and fine Italian furniture.

But the main feature is the transom. More precisely, how it opens completely, and a huge bathing platform descends down. It turns out an impressive recreation area with an area of \u200b\u200babout 30 square meters.

Summing up all the features, we get a yacht that, at the touch of a button, can become one continuous living space.

We need energy!

All this luxury, of course, requires energy. Lots of energy. 2-3 kW of solar panels are built into the boat's hull. It is possible to install a pair of wind turbines.

For a quiet night's sleep, there is a 50 kW lithium-ion battery. To support all this, two 8.6kW generator sets are needed, along with two 165kW Volvo Pentas.

Hanstaiger X1, X2, X3…

John Ordovas was very surprised that there was a demand for X1. At once, several dozen people passionately desired this trimaran. So John ventured a little cheat. “Initially, it was not expected that there would be many boats. First, it destroys the exclusivity of the product. Secondly, this boat is quite a niche product. But the fact that she became widely known in narrow circles made me change my mind,” John laughs.

“You see, X1 will still not be more than three or four pieces. This was the idea. I do not mind and do not exclude the possibility of continuing the series in the form of boats of the X2, X3 lines, etc. Interest in the boat is really phenomenal. But we simply will not export in terms of capacity. Presently! But expect news from us in the near future.”

HANSTAIGER X1: The Trimaran To End All Trimarans

' src=

April 27/2022:  No, my friends, this is not one of those “concept” yachts, where a bored designer comes up with some really fanciful, crazy idea for a boat that will never ever get built. This is a real fanciful, crazy boat that exists in the real world, and if you really want you can buy one too!

You can say a lot of uncomplimentary things about this new Hainstaiger X1 . That from the outside it is phenomenally ugly. That it is nothing more than a luxuriously appointed carbon fiber brick that is grossly undercanvassed and is sure to perform like a dog. Etc. Etc. But you’d be missing the point.

The design of the boat is all about the interior.

trimaran by hanstaiger

Starting with the central deluxe feature, the main saloon, which opens directly to outside via the fold-down beach-club transom doors

trimaran by hanstaiger

Fold-down transom as seen from the outside. This is the only way to board the boat. It’s like having your driveway in your living room is one way to look at it. Or it’s like having a beach in your saloon!

trimaran by hanstaiger

This modest galley is also incorporated into the saloon area

trimaran by hanstaiger

The other side of the saloon. Yes, that’s a grand piano lurking in the corner there. One question: is it bolted down???

trimaran by hanstaiger

That magnificent stairway you see in the previous photo leads up to this flybridge cockpit space, where you can sail or drive the boat

trimaran by hanstaiger

All sail controls are push button, with a furling main and jib run via captive winches belowdeck. If the sails seem a bit too vestigial, you can opt for just the powerboat version

trimaran by hanstaiger

Master stateroom, with a cozy snuggling nook right in the bow. No need for an anchor or rode up there, as the anchor is mounted under the hull, submarine-style. (Frankly, until I studied this boat I didn’t even know submarines carried anchors!)

For more detail on this amazing vessel, I urge to study these videos.

The first gives you a more pornographic look at the interior and also shows the boat sailing. You’ll note when it’s sailing that it hobbyhorses an awful lot. They’re looking at designing stabilizers to neutralize that habit.

The second video takes you into the systems, which, amazingly, are mostly located in the amas!

The third tells you more about the man behind this project and the design and construction generally.

And, like I said, all this can be yours… for somewhere around 5 million euros.

It’s whole megayacht inside a 64-foot multihull. Viewed from that perspective it’s a downright bargain.

#1 I like the fact there is redundancy. However, there is not double the chance of having a host of problems.

#2 The is really fancy! Folding, variable blah blah blah. However, this is not a . What you are doing is placing a propeller aboard that can't be fixed remotely. Further it is totally unprotected. I found a simple fixed prop perfect for a non-racing sailboat.

#3 The unsupported shaft length is not acceptable. One bump from a small log would damage both the prop that can't be repaired and the shaft which must now be removed. Try that while in the water! At minimum drop a strut and add two cutlass bearings within the strut. The prop should be about 6" from the end of the strut.

#4 Yes I like the tiny short . The rudder on my vessel was almost 8 feet tall. However, if this totally unprotected rudder is , and chances are now twice, this vessel may not steer. I am strongly in favor of changing to a rudder that can steer this vessel.

#5 A short daggerboard in front of the shaft will deflect most away before they hit the new strut, prop, and rudder. Despite the fact I had just such a dagger board, I still suffered prop damage when I hit something.

.

That thread began back in October 2019. They cite many things I have already cited. They also identified the rig on the vessel.

I admit I'm more than a little pedantic. If topics like hull shape, slamming, chains, and hobby horsing don't interest you, by all means tune me out.

For those of you still interested, look closely at the first photograph. It appears to be a nice sailing day and the sea state is quite calm. Notice the huge spray coming from between the hulls. The aka's of the vessel clearly slammed into the sea. This isn't exactly slicing serenely through the waves like the videographer suggests. Certainly, this generated a very large inside. Further, anyone seated in those luxury seats topside would be drenched by spray by now.

The reasons the aka of this vessel slam into sea are:
It now appears to me that 3 of these vessels have been built. I captured a shot from a tourist video of a Hanstaiger X1 in a marina. I wonder why there is a huge plate across the aka.

Despite what the owner of the firm says in a video, there is no escaping the fact a cruising sailing requires safe access to all and .

Obviously, there is the sloped surface on the bow, however, also notice the sloped surface below the bow. The connection points at the ama are also not safe. Glazing appears strong enough to stand on, however, would you stand on sloped wet slippery surface with nothing to prevent you falling .

protection to prevent someone from going . Horizontal spacing or lines must prevent someone from slipping under railings that need to be added. There must be several latch points for crew/owner to safely tie on to descend to the bow wearing safety harnesses.

2. It might be possible for the top layer of the double layered glazing to have deep groove or tall raised bumps to provide traction.

3. There needs to be a strong attachment point for an inner stay sail.

4. Under no circumstances should anyone suggest this vessel ever fly a . The manufacturer appears to have already realized this. I used to fly multiple sails downwind by making attachments to the ama. I suggest the manufacturer add both attachment points to the ama bows and rigging lines to raise/lower additional downwind sails.

5. The bows of the ama need full protection on this vessel owing to the bow shape. Therefore, the sailing system, looks pretty, but is not safe. Safe access to the tip of the ama bow is needed when and on a three-point .
