"He Will Be Deeply Missed": Vetrimaran Pays Tribute to Vetri Duraisamy

The news of Vetri Duraisamy's tragic passing struck a chord with many on February 4th. While traveling with friends in Himachal Pradesh, an accident in Kinnaur claimed his life, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew him.

A search operation involving various teams, including the SDRF, NDRF, ITBP, and local police, recovered his body on Monday after a post-mortem examination. Divers located him three kilometers from the accident site.

Numerous political leaders and film personalities joined in grieving Vetri's sudden demise. Director Vetrimaran, a close friend and collaborator, organized a condolence meeting at his educational institution, IIFC, to honor his memory.

Sharing their profound connection, Vetrimaran acknowledged, "Vetri often said he learned cinema from me, but in reality, he taught me just as much. One thing we deeply shared was our love for nature and its creatures."

"He was an explorer, driven by a thirst for knowledge and adventure. For the past decade, he was my constant companion. Whether it was sourcing props for my films, musical instruments for our home, or simply finding joy in nature, he was always there, enthusiastic and supportive," Vetrimaran fondly recalled.

"Vetri's belief in supporting others led him to readily embrace the vision of IIFC. Without his unwavering support, the institute wouldn't be what it is today. He also actively contributed to his father's Humanities Foundation, demonstrating his genuine desire to help others," Vetrimaran continued.

He further highlighted Vetri's passion for wildlife photography, stating, "Vetri's curiosity and passion radiated through his award-winning wildlife photography. His recent expeditions to Africa for gorillas and the Arctic for polar bears showcased his dedication to capturing nature's wonders. Tragically, his life was cut short while pursuing his dream of photographing the elusive snow leopard."

"His infectious smile and genuine kindness extended not only to humans but to all living beings. His absence leaves an unfillable void. Life throws these unimaginable challenges at us. He had just completed his first film and was brimming with potential when this tragedy struck," Vetrimaran said with a heavy heart.

"To honor his memory, we plan to initiate awards at IIFC. One award will be dedicated to the first Tamil filmmaker, and another to wildlife photography, both bearing his name. We will share further details soon," he announced.

"Life brings us many people, some fleeting, others leaving an indelible mark. Vetri Duraisamy was the latter. His absence leaves a profound emptiness, but his memory will continue to inspire us," Vetrimaran concluded solemnly.

அனைத்துவிதமான கதைகளும் சொல்லப்பட வேண்டும்: வெற்றிமாறன்

சினிமாவில் அனைத்துவிதமான கதைகளும் சொல்லப்பட வேண்டும் என்று இயக்குநர் வெற்றிமாறன் தெரிவித்தார்.

சமூக ரீதியாகவும், பொருளாதார ரீதியாகவும் பிற்படுத்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்களுக்காக இலவசமாக சினிமா பயிற்சி கொடுக்கும் புதிய முயற்சியை எடுத்துள்ளார் இயக்குநர் வெற்றிமாறன். இதனை சர்வதேச திரைப்பட மற்றும் பண்பாட்டு நிறுவனம் தொடங்கியுள்ளது. இதில் சிறப்பு அம்சம் என்னவென்றால் ஒவ்வொரு மாணவருக்கும் 100% மானியத்துடன் முழுமையான உணவு, குடியிருப்பு வசதிகள் வழங்கப்படும் .

இதற்கான பத்திரிகையாளர் சந்திப்பு சென்னையில் இன்று (ஏப்ரல் 14) நடைபெற்றது. இதில் இயக்குநர் வெற்றிமாறன் கலந்துகொண்டார். முதலில் மாணவர்களுக்கான இந்தத் திட்டத்தை விளக்கினார். பின்பு பத்திரிகையாளர்களின் கேள்விகளுக்கு பதிலளித்தார்.

அவை பின்வருமாறு:

சாதிக் கலவரங்களை நேரில் பார்த்தவன் நான். சமீபகால தமிழ்ப் படங்களில் சாதியைப் பேசுவது அதிகமாக இருக்கிறது. 'அசுரன்', 'திரௌபதி', 'கர்ணன்', 'ருத்ர தாண்டவம்' என அடுத்தடுத்து படங்கள் வருகின்றன. சினிமாவினால் சாதி வெறி தூண்டப்படுகிறதோ என்கிற அச்சம் இருக்கிறது. இந்தப் போக்கு சரியா?

ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அவரவரின் கதையைச் சொல்லும் உரிமை இருக்கிறது. எல்லா விதமான கதைகளும் சொல்லப்பட வேண்டும் என்றே நான் நினைக்கிறேன். சமூகத்தில் இருப்பதைத்தான் சினிமா பேசுகிறது. அதைப் பேசாமல் இருப்பதால் சமூகத்தில் அது இல்லை என்று ஆகிவிடாது. பேசப்பட்டு விவாதத்தை உருவாக்கும்போது அது நல்ல விஷயம் என்றே நான் நினைக்கிறேன்.

பாதிக்கப்படுவது தென், வட மாவட்டத்து மக்கள்தான். இரண்டு தரப்பிலும் பற்ற வைத்தால் எளிதில் வெடிக்கும் அபாயம் இருக்கிறது. அந்தப் பொறுப்புணர்வு தேவை இல்லையா?

பொறுப்புணர்வோடு செயல்பட வேண்டும் என்பதைத்தான் நான் சொல்கிறேன். பொறுப்பு என்பது இல்லாமல் இதுபோன்ற கதைகளைக் கையாளவே முடியாது என்றே நினைக்கிறேன். குறைந்தபட்சப் பொறுப்புணர்வு இருந்தால்தான் இதைச் செய்யவே முடியும்.

இவ்வாறு வெற்றிமாறன் பதில் அளித்தார்.

இந்த ஊரடங்கு காலத்தில் வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியே வராமல் நமக்கு நாமே சமூக விலகல் ( Social Distancing) செய்து கொள்வோம். செய்தி ஊடகங்களின் வழியே உலகுடன் தொடர்பில் இருப்போம். பொதுவெளியில் இருந்து தனிமைப்படுத்திக் கொண்டு கரோனா பரவலைத் தடுப்பதில் நம் பங்கை முழுமையாக இந்த சமூகத்துக்கு அளிப்போம்.

இந்நிலையில் விடுதலை சிறுத்தைகள் கட்சித் தலைவர் திருமாவளவனின் 60 வது பிறந்தநாள் விழாவில் பங்கேற்ற இயக்குநர் வெற்றி மாறன், திருவள்ளுவருக்கு காவி உடை அணிவிப்பது மற்றும் ராஜ ராஜ சோழனை இந்து அரசனாக சித்தரிப்பது போன்ற விஷயங்கள் நடைபபெற்று வருவதாக பேசியிருந்தார்.

Vetrimaaran: ‘More than Oscar, making others accept our local mainstream films is real development’

Vetrimaaran explains why south indian film industries are creating pan-indian content while other industries are failing to catch up..

Vetrimaaran was part of the second edition of the CII Daksin Summit, the largest media and entertainment summit in South India. The National Award-winning director spoke about the reason why South Indian films are transcending borders. “They say art doesn’t need language and border, but art has its own language and culture,” he began.

The Polladavan director cited the pandemic and the lockdown as the reason for the shift in the way people started consuming films. “We have been talking about the so-called Pan-Indian film; the films that are made for a wider audience. But what I really respect about the films that became nationwide success is that they were not made to appease or manipulate the larger audiences who are beyond the place of origin of the films. Be it KGF or RRR or Kantara… if it is a Kannada film, it was not made with a Kannada hero, Tamil comedian, and a father or mother from the North.”

He added, “Earlier, there was a generic approach in films like if there’s a wedding, it was very generic so it can be relatable to all kinds of audience. However, now, these filmmakers are making films for their audience, about their culture, and in their style. That’s why it becomes a hit universally. We should tell our stories, but emotions become universal. Earlier, we tried to tell larger stories and universal themes, which we failed in a way. In these recent years, that’s the change that has come out.”

“More than getting an Oscar, I think taking our mainstream films that are made for our people… taking those films and making it a success across the world is the real development and evolution. South Indian films have created an impact in terms of revenue generation because we are telling our stories, for our people, with our people. Other industries are not able to do that because they are trying to cater to everybody,” he said.

Vetrimaaran's comments have come just days after the release of filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: Part One , which is based on Kalki’s fictional Tamil novel inspired by the Tamil emperor Raja Raja Cholan (since there is no English equivalent of the letter 'zha,' Chozhan is mostly written as ‘Cholan’).

Vetrimaaran was speaking at the 60th birthday celebrations of MP and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’s (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan on 1 October. He presided over as the Chief guest in the event which included a short film and documentary festival titled ‘ Makkal Ezhuchi, Ondru Seru’ (loosely translated as 'people, rise and come together’).

During this event, Vetrimaaran made some strong political statements.

The director recounted the best advice he got from VCK Chief Thirumavalavan before making the Dhanush-starrer Asuran – "Please stop showing how a single hero alone is changing society in your movies. All filmmakers make the same mistake. Show how change happens through a movement. That will be better."

“Art should be treated rightly. If we fail to do so, very soon we will lose out identities. They are constantly misappropriating our identities. Like, cladding Thiruvalluvar in saffron, presenting Raja Raja Cholan as a Hindu king. Our identities are being erased.”

“Art is inherently political. Our very existence is political. Knowingly or unknowingly, we occupy a certain political space. Cinema is an art form which very easily reaches common people and it is essential to make cinema political.”

Dravidian Movement Took Films to the Masses

“Despite pressure from external forces, the reason why Tamil Nadu has become a secular state is because Tamil cinema has adopted the Dravidian ideology.”

“When the Dravidian movement took over Tamil cinema, there were arguments about doing art for art’s sake and not for the masses. They talked a lot about aesthetics. Yes, that’s also important but no art is complete if it doesn’t touch the lives of people. Art should reflect people's lives.”

'Well-Read, Politically Conscious Filmmaker'

During media interaction, when asked about Vetrimaaran's comments, actor and political leader Seeman opined that what the filmmaker said was true. He said that the Dravidian movement reclaimed cinema from a particular community (dominant caste) and made it a common medium for all. It was made possible by the Dravidian leaders of those days like Kalaignar M Karunanidhi and MG Ramachandran who worked in the film industry.

'Why Is Hinduism Always Subjected To Criticism?'

Reacting to the Vadachennai director's comments, Thalapathy Vijay's Thirupaachi fame, filmmaker Perarasu said, "A fake atheist is more dangerous than a fake preacher or a guru."

Vetrimaaran is a reputed filmmaker from the South who is a serial national award winner. Known for making films centered around socially relevant subjects like caste inequalities, police brutality and the importance of education, he has received national awards for the first time, under two categories – best director and best screenwriter – for his film Aadukalam starring Dhanush. Some of his other award winning films are Kaaka Muttai, which was backed under his production, Visaranai and Asuran .

On the work front, his lineup of upcoming films includes Suriya-starrer Vaadivaasal and Viduthalai starring Soori, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Vijasethupathi .
