Yacht crew salary guide

On yachts over 45m | 145ft in size, in addition to the Chief Engineer, there will also generally be a dedicated Engineer working towards ensuring the efficient running of the yacht. The larger the yacht, the bigger the engineering team on board.

A Yacht Engineer reports directly to the Chief Engineer and is responsible for the safe and efficient running of the mechanical and electrical operations of the yacht. This includes everything from the main engines to TV, audio-visual systems, air conditioning, refrigeration to toys and tenders, etc.

What does a yacht Engineer do? | Yacht Engineer Job Description

Essentially, a yacht Engineer participates in ensuring the proper functioning of all mechanical and electrical systems onboard a yacht. It’s therefore important that today’s superyacht Engineers possess an extensive and complex skill set and are familiar with the equipment on board.

The responsibilities of an Engineer include:

Daily maintenance of all mechanical and electrical and electronic systems on board the yacht

Troubleshooting any issues that may arise

Maintenance of the yacht's main engines and engine room systems

Monitoring engine, machinery, and equipment indicators when the yacht is underway

Ensuring proper functioning of all toys and tenders

Implementing good safety practices

Maintaining inventory of all parts

Cleanliness and maintenance in the engine room

Providing assistance during shipyard periods

Soft and hard skills required to be an Engineer

A yacht Engineer should be technically-minded, an excellent problem solver, hardworking and keen to learn and progress.

It’s good to keep in mind that engineering practices and technologies change fast, so Engineers need to be adaptable and constantly work to improve and enhance their skill set through ongoing professional development.

The skills of an Engineer include:

In-depth knowledge of all systems onboard

Ability to identify and troubleshoot any issue

Excellent problem-solving skills

Great attention to detail

Positive attitude and eagerness to learn

Knowledge of safety procedures

Good work ethic

Excellent planning for preventative maintenance

Ability to prioritize and organize

Ability to learn on the job

Ability to take direction

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht

All crew members regardless of their position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarer's medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

Without these two certificates, it is not possible for the crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht. For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide .
