How do I buy a yacht?
Speak to your Y.CO Broker who will advise on pricing, offering market comparisons and analysis reports. They will also arrange sea trials and inspections, supported by Y.CO's technical team. Your Y.CO Broker will collect documents and collaborate with all parties for agreement completion.

Which Superyacht is Right for You?
The type of superyachts best suited for you depends on the on-water experience you want. You may want power and speed, ensuring a motor-powered superyacht is right for you. Alternatively, you may want to feel the wind pushing you across the water, so a sailing yacht is best suited for your needs. In either respect, the most popular superyachts feature incredible amenities, top performance and exceptional design that allows them to retain their value for resale or charter.
When choosing the ideal superyacht, you – with the help of your broker – will weigh various options and features, including style, type of yacht, build pedigree, crew layout, facilities, décor and more. Whether you are looking for a large, modern motor yacht or a classically styled gentlemen’s yacht, Northrop & Johnson has a wide selection of superyacht types available for sale.
When buying or building a yacht, remember: first and foremost, your yacht is for you and your family or friends to use. What type of experience and use are you looking for in your ownership? Are you interested in a new or used yacht? Custom built or semi-custom? How are you planning to use your yacht? If you are planning to charter your yacht to help offset some of the running costs, then factor in the charterer, but remember, a yacht is very personal and you must consider your own needs as a priority.

The 10 biggest superyachts currently listed for sale
Related articles, superyacht directory.
Want to know how much boat you can buy for your buck? BOAT takes a look at the biggest yachts currently for sale, starting with the iconic 114.5-metre superyacht Pelorus ...
Pelorus | 114.5m
Year: 2003 Builder: Lürssen
Pelorus was commissioned by a Saudi businessman who enjoyed one long, glorious cruise aboard his new superyacht before tycoon Roman Abramovich made him an offer too good to refuse. Easily the largest yacht to be built by Lürssen at the time, her Tim Heywood exterior features a top deck "lido" with two swimming pools, two helicopter pads and a vast, sea-level platform revealed by opening the transom. Interiors were carried out by Terence Disdale , who opted to use natural materials wherever possible to maintain a "casual" atmosphere – in the hopes it would offset the yacht’s imposing frame.
Pelorus is asking €185,000,000 with Burgess .
Moonlight II | 91.4m
Year: 2005 Builder: Neorion
The brainchild of the late Andreas Liveras, Moonchild II was originally commissioned as the 85.3-metre Alysia alongside sistership Annaliesse (now Queen Miri ). Her transformative 2015 refit added the extra 6.1 metres alongside a brand new beach club made complete with a well-stocked bar, sunbathing areas and shell doors that reveal far-flung ocean views. Other highlights include a touch-and-go helipad and a full-beam spa with massage room, beauty salon, steam shower and gym.
Moonlight II is asking €68,000,000 with Fraser .
Phoenix II | 90.1m
Year: 2010 Builder: Lürssen
Phoenix II takes a page (or two) from The Great Gatsby with her cherry velvet flooring and gilded details. The owner commissioned Winch Design to create her intricate "Art Deco meets the New York skyline" design concept, including a 5.7-metre phoenix figurehead modelled after the Chrysler building's mounted eagles. Roaring highlights include a sommelier room, three swimming pools, a plush cinema room and a custom Steinway for some musical accompaniment at mealtimes.
Phoenix II is asking €124,950,000 with Cecil Wright and Burgess .
Lady Lara | 91m
Year: 2015 Builder: Lürssen
Debuting on the brokerage market in September 2023, Lady Lara has eluded the public eye for eight years – with BOAT International only recently stepping on board . She was designed inside and out by Reymond Langton and features two standout swimming pools . The first transforms into a dance floor with surround-sound while the second is fitted with a swim-up bar, large day bed and sunlounger. Lady Lara 's recently-completed winter works were valued at a staggering €15,000,000.
Lady Lara is asking €230,000,000 with Y.CO and Merle Wood & Associates .
Year: 2009 Builder: Abeking & Rasmussen
Another Reymond Langton entry, B2 remains the second-largest launch by the German shipyard (beaten out by the 118.2-metre Livao ). Her recent four-million-euro refit saw the hull extended by seven metres – allowing room for a spacious beach club, with a glass-bottom infinity pool acting as its rippling, refracted ceiling. The beach club is also outfitted with lounge chairs, a drinks bar and flatscreen television.
B2 is asking €79,000,000 with Moravia Yachting .
Chakra | 86m
Year: 1963 Builder: Van Der Werf
Delivered first as a commercial vessel, Chakra was converted into a full-fledged superyacht in 1998 by Devonport Yachts . The change saw her five decks rearranged with a dedicated yoga area, spa pool, beauty parlor, massage room and gym. This unconventional yacht also boasts a globe-trotting range (in exces of 10,000 nautical miles) and a spacious tender garage housing Yamaha Wave Runners, two RIBs and a 12-metre Sessa dayboat.
Chakra is listed for sale with Merle Wood & Associates, with POA.
O'Ptasia | 84.7m
Year: 2018 Builder: Golden Yachts
Superseded by 95-metre sistership O'Pari in 2020, Golden Yachts' former flagship is still one of the largest yachts on the market today. Her most attention-pulling feature is the beach club spa, fitted with a steam room, dry Finnish sauna, Hammam and massage room. Continuing the theme of wellness, a touch-and-go helipad on the foredeck can double as a yoga studio (with a view like no other) while her waterfall Jacuzzi is also a rejuvenating spot.
O'Ptasia is asking €89,999,000.00 with Burgess.
Elements | 80m
Year: 2019 Builder: Yachtley
The newest delivery on the list, Elements is Alpha Marine -made and "one of the world’s few purpose-built SOLAS yachts" according to her broker. Worthy of note is the master cabin, complete with its own oval lobby that doubles as a walk-in closet and a private deck with helipad, swimming pool, Jacuzzi and small private dining table. Her opulent Cristiano Gatto interiors see unconventional features (think Grecian-style pillars and etched-mirrored glass) incorporated alongside gold, silver and mother of pearl inlays.
Elements is asking €112,000,000 with Camper & Nicholsons .
Amaryllis | 78.4m
Year: 2011 Builder: Abeking & Rasmussen
Inspired by the Belle Époque, Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, it's no wonder Amaryllis' interiors (owed to Reymond Langton) always dazzle those who step aboard. Leisure highlights include a piano lounge, cinema suite and five-metre pool with colourful underwater lighting for night-time swims. Her waterside set-up also impresses, with a beach club that features a fully-equipped (and perfectly paired) gym and spa.
Amaryllis is asking €89,000,000 with Moravia Yachting.
Yersin | 76.6m
Year: 2015 Builder: Piriou
Designed by Pierre-Jacques Kubis in the same scientific spirit as her namesake , Yersin is equipped with a barge, seaplane and enough provisions to keep 18 people fed for 50 days. But this military-style explorer is built not just for getting to extraordinary places, but also for making the most of them once there. Guests have free reign over a 30-square-metre spa, cinema and a pool deck complete with a teppanyaki galley, sushi bar and a large swimming pool. Other highlights include a library and an elevator accessing all decks.
Yersin is asking €59,000,000 with Fraser.

JTA wins grant to buy second St. Johns River Ferry boat
The Jean Ribault is getting a backup to ferry people, cars and trucks across the St. Johns River between Mayport and Fort George Island, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority announced Monday.
JTA won a federal grant to pay for the purchase of a new diesel hybrid-electric ferry to supplement the existing St. Johns River Ferry service.
With only one boat thus far, service has had to be suspended for several weeks annually for maintenance on the vessel, JTA says, along with any unexpected repairs needed.
The second ferry, to be bought with a $15.6 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant, will ensure uninterrupted service during maintenance, JTA CEO Nathaniel Ford said in a news release. The second boat, which still needs to be built, is set to hit the water in fall of 2028.
In the same release, Mayor Donna Deegan said, “This is another exciting grant win that is a result of our fantastic collaboration with the JTA, relationships we’ve built with the Biden-Harris Administration, and the dedicated work of the grant writing teams. The new hybrid-fuel ferry vessel will increase connectivity, sustainability, and economic competitiveness for the historic communities of Mayport Village and Fort George.

Portland Boat Shed Is Being Sold as a $185K Family Home—So, Would You Buy the Budget-Friendly Abode?
Prospective homebuyers in Portland, OR , now have the chance to jump onto the property ladder for just $185,000—if, that is, they’re willing for their first family house to be a converted boat shed.
The unique waterfront structure is being advertised as a “single family” home but with just one bedroom and one bathroom, it may not be the ideal setup for anyone angling for space in which to grow their brood.
Still, with 1,100-square-feet of living space, the peculiar property does offer more a lot more room than the average New York City apartment, as well as certain one-of-a-kind amenities that can only be enjoyed as a result of such close proximity to the water.
One of those, of course, is a built-in boat well and stunning marina views that can be admired in from the comfort of the bedroom.
If you love the idea of boating right up to your back door on the Columbia River (or even doing the backstroke to get there), this is the home for you.
(Realtor.com)
Of course, the low price cannot be overlooked; at $185,000, the property is nearly $400,000 less than the city’s median listing price , which as of July sat at $549,000, according to Realtor.com®.
This nautical nest is located at McCuddy’s Marina, a boat slip that’s perfectly positioned for access to the airport, the city of Portland, and loads of natural wildlife.
Newly transformed from a building that once housed watercraft, this home is now primed for occupancy. Per the listing details: “This handcrafted boathouse offers an exceptional opportunity for fishermen, water enthusiasts, or those seeking a peaceful getaway.”
The open-plan living room and kitchen is roomy and useful, with a small bar and seating in the cook space. If you’re sore from a day at the office (or as a commercial fisherman), there’s even a handy hot tub in the main room for a quick post-work soak.
Have a boat? You should if you’re considering these salty digs. You’ll be pleased to learn that a 24-by-10-foot boat well takes up one end of the property. Store your boat here, and take it out for a cruise easily thanks to the roll-up garage door.
There’s also a platform bed by the boat well for guests. Just be sure to warn them to watch their step when they throw off the covers.
Pretty tongue-and-groove wood ceilings and exposed beams feel rustic and appropriate. A separate bedroom and bath, along with a corridor for clothing and a washer/dryer unit, complete this waterside package.
In all, this is a unique maritime dwelling for someone looking to live away from the crowds and fall asleep to the peaceful waters just feet away.
“Enjoy privacy and tranquility with exterior privacy walls surrounding the float, allowing for outdoor relaxation in your own personal space,” the listing suggests. “Whether you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle or embrace life on the water, this boathouse offers a unique and sought-after lifestyle at McCuddy’s Marina.”

We spent £150k more to buy a houseboat over a ‘perfect’ home – we have no regrets
Adam dunlop and his wife lisa funded the purchase of their houseboat by selling their current home.
Last year, Adam Dunlop and his wife Lisa sold their home in Twickenham and bought a houseboat, named Orca , moored on the River Thames.
“The perfect house and this boat turned up at the same time and we went for the boat,” says Dunlop, 59, a freelance video editor.
Orca measures 26 metres, has a top floor which is half deck and half glass box, with floor-to-ceiling windows all the way round. There’s also a kitchen/living room and three bedrooms downstairs.
Unlike many houseboats, Orca doesn’t have an engine, so can’t go anywhere, but one of her big selling points was that she came with a share of a private mooring.
“You can buy some lovely boats at wonderful prices but, if you don’t have a mooring, you’ve got nothing. The mooring is everything on the Thames,” says Dunlop.
Most moorings – essentially a spot where you can leave your boat – involve paying a fee to someone else, and that fee can be as much as a large mortgage every month .
“It varies depending on the location and the length of the vessel. The longer the vessel, the more it will incur in mooring fees. However, I would say that the average is around £10,000 a year,” says Nigel Day, co-founder and director of RiverHomes.
“Of the approximately 1,200 moorings in London – which are usually classed as either permanent or leisure – only about 100 or so boat owners own their mooring.”
Dunlop says: “On our marina, there are seven boats – five own a share – and it works like a share of freehold.” He paid about £775,000 for his houseboat and its mooring, funded by selling his home for £750,000. If the couple had bought the home they had their eye on instead, it would have been cheaper, at about £625,000.
The mooring includes a small, shared garden, mooring entrance, parking space and a room in a lock-up.
“Private moorings are very rare to find and are a much bigger upfront cost, but the outlay is then smaller,” he explains.
The boats on the private mooring pay into a sink fund which covers insurance and maintenance costs. This works out at just under £200 a month but, if there’s any extra maintenance to be done, it’s more. The couple also pay the Port of London Authority, which looks after the Thames, around £135 a month, a figure that varies depending on your boat.
While these are extra costs that don’t come with a traditional home, there are some financial advantages to houseboat life. The boat itself is stamp duty-exempt and there was just a small amount of stamp duty to pay for the land that comes with the mooring.
Houseboats also generally attract a lower rate of council tax . Water and electricity work in a similar way to if you live on land, although Orca has an air source heat pump that makes the latter cheaper.
The pros aren’t all monetary, though. “I have to pinch myself because it’s so peaceful and beautiful,” says Dunlop. “When the tide is low, you can sit out and watch for birds, sit with a cup of coffee and lose yourself in it, but we’re closer to town than we could afford if we lived in a house. It’s also a great place to entertain. We are by a walk and people drop in, we have lovely parties and great summer nights.”
“Living by the river feels like being in the country but you’re right in the middle of London. We back on to the high street in Brentford but, because there’s an island [Brentford Ait] behind us, we’re on the quiet side so there aren’t pleasure boats going past. It’s very private,” he says.
The couple have three boys, all in their twenties, one of whom is temporarily at home.
“They like being here. We have a kayak and a motorboat that we take out. It’s got everything; there’s a nature reserve in front of me, which no one is allowed to go on, and it’s our own bit of private countryside.”
There’s also a great sense of community in the marina, which Dunlop says people will either take to or not. “You need to be prepared to muck in and help out. You do talk to your neighbours and there’s a degree of communal living.”
In terms of downsides, maintenance is the main one.
“There are little things that you need to do and budget for, for example, looking after the exterior wood. Every 10 years, you also have to get all of the boat checked out. Boats are living items, so, after an amount of time, you need to add to them or repair them,” says Dunlop.
Workers could get £250k pension pot for free under proposed retirement saving rule
“Depending on the type of boat, it must be put in dry dock for its hull to be scraped or pressure-blasted and for the hull to be surveyed,” says Day.
“Most boat owners take this opportunity to also blacken the hull and replace any anodes. Many go ahead and paint the rest of the exterior at this time, too. Costs vary between boatyards, but houseboat owners need to budget between £7,000 to £10,000.”
The weather is another factor to be aware of and Dunlop recommends doing a houseboat swap before committing to living on a boat all year round.
The couple occasionally let Orca on AirBnB so people who want to live on the river can give it a go.
“It’s a good idea if you want to try it out. Be aware that, if you do it in summer, you need to be able to do it in winter, too.” Other disadvantages are the lack of fibre Wi-Fi and the phone signal.
“Because the Thames is tidal, the phone signal is better at some times than others. At low tide, it’s not very good,” he says.
The Dunlops were able to finance their purchase through the sale of their Twickenham home but, if you need to get a mortgage, buying a boat can be difficult.
“They are almost always bought with cash. Marine finance is possible (sometimes called marine mortgages), but the term is short, the deposit is high and so is the interest rate,” says Day. “Of the very small number who opt for marine finance, 10 per cent interest or more is typical.”
Dunlop at least, has no regrets: “A certain sort of person lives on a boat, it’s self-selecting. You need to have a certain outlook and a touch of romance in your soul. For me, it was a no-brainer.”

'SNL' star Colin Jost admits buying Staten Island Ferry boat with Pete Davidson was his 'dumbest' purchase
Jost says that his wife, actress scarlett johansson, reacted with disbelief when he first told her he was buying the historic vessel.

"SNL" star Colin Jost got candid about his decision to buy a Staten Island Ferry vessel with his former co-star Pete Davidson.
In 2022, Jost, 42, Davidson, 30, and comedy club owner Paul Italia and developer Ron Castellano bought the decommissioned ferry launched in 1965 - the MV John F. Kennedy - at a New York auction for $280,000 with plans to turn it into the Big Apple's hottest nightclub.
During a recent interview with People magazine, Jost, who noted that he considers himself to be a "conservative" spender, shared his regrets over the investment.
"It is absolutely the dumbest and least thought-through purchase I've ever made in my life," Jost said while speaking to People at the Tommy Hilfiger show during New York Fashion Week, which was held on the vessel.

He continued: "The way I justified it is for the amount of money we were putting into buying it, on just a basic square-footage level, is if you found the right place for it to be, you were essentially buying a building on its side that's 65,000 square feet. So around New York, that is a very good price per square foot."

Jost acknowledged that there has been minimal movement to renovate and run the historic ferry in the two years since he made the purchase with Davidson and Italia.
"It is absolutely the dumbest and least thought-through purchase I've ever made in my life." — Colin Jost
While speaking with People, he explained that the three investors haven't been able to dedicate much time to the project since they have been too busy with their full-time careers on land.

Jost also noted that running the vessel would require hiring a staff, which he said is a responsibility that he wasn't certain if he wanted to take on.
A few months after making the purchase, the Staten Island native was photographed setting sail from St. George Ferry Terminal for the first time. However, he told People that the partners' insurance company would probably be against future joyrides.
"Maybe they would love it because it would get them out of the contract," Jost quipped. "But it requires a lot of people to move it."
Jost revealed that his wife Scarlett Johansson reacted with disbelief when he told her that he was thinking of buying the vessel. (Getty Images)
Jost recalled that his wife, actress Scarlett Johansson , reacted with disbelief when he first shared that he was thinking of buying the ferry, but she has since come around and thinks that he and his partners should make the most of it.

"She was just like, 'Wait, so you own this boat now?' Very fair question," Jost said. "She now obviously sees the value in it, but also I think she's like, 'It's now become something that is a defining thing for you guys and an interesting thing for you guys. So you should take it seriously and figure out the best version of it, because for better or worse, it's going to reflect on you.' We don't care because we're comedians."
One of the comedian's other partners on the project, Castellano, revealed in a March interview that the ferry will be converted into a floating hotel with 24 rooms, two restaurants and six bars.

"It’s going to have a lot of things," Castellano told Curbed of the $34 million venue project.

Castellano also shared that the ferry could be towed between New York and Miami.
"I think that’s exactly still the plan. It doesn’t have to be in one place. It can move, so we’re exploring both locations," he explained.

However, Jost told People that he would prefer that New York remain the ferry's permanent home.
"Being on the water in New York is very special," Jost said. "I would love it obviously to be here. I think it's special if it stays in New York in some way and I think it will be re-imagined, but the spirit of it will be the same."
