The Little Rock Yacht Club was established in 1971. It is in the bend of the Arkansas River, River Mile 130, in Little Rock. There are over 200 covered and 30 uncovered slips. We also have transient slips available for rental by the day, week, or month.

LRYC can accommodate any vessel from jet skis to 120' motor yachts. Water, electricity, and pump-out capabilities are available in all slips. Our fuel dock has both gas and diesel.

Our Marina Store has a selection of items that you may need in your boating day.

• From I-430 in Little Rock, go West on Cantrell Road (Highway 10) for approximately 2.3 miles.
• Turn right at the light of Pinnacle Valley Road. Go approximately 1.3 miles.
• Take a sharp left at a large tan brick house, and continue to follow Pinnacle Valley Road.
• Continue on for 0.9 miles and make another curve left. (If you go straight, you will head directly into Maumelle Park.)
• Go 0.3 miles and turn right at Yacht Club Drive in front of a big propeller.
• Follow the road another 0.3 miles. The Little Rock Yacht Club office is on your right.

180 years of history 'tucked away' behind popular restaurant

F or well over a century, a Merseyside club has stood proudly - but there's still "so much people don't know about it." Located on Bedford Road East in Rock Ferry, The Royal Mersey Yacht Club, founded in 1844, has a fascinating history.

The club was given its Royal Charter by Queen Victoria, their first patron, during their first year, making it one of the longest established Yacht Clubs in the UK. One of the forerunners in establishing the rules of racing, the club has promoted yacht racing on the River Mersey and adjoining waters for generations.

Previously located in Liverpool and Birkenhead , it has been at its current Rock Ferry site, near the popular Refreshment Rooms, since 1901. Welcoming members from across Merseyside and beyond for almost two centuries, many well-known names have passed through their doors.

As part of the Liverpool ECHO's How It Used To Be series , we spoke to some of the people at the heart of The Royal Mersey Yacht Club about its illustrious 180-year history and what life is like for members today. Rear Commodore Ian Diamond was first introduced to the club as a child and said while the club has developed, it has held onto many of its traditions.

Ian, 65, told the ECHO: "I started at quite a young age when my father got involved. I remember sitting on the stairs with a bottle of pop, it was those sorts of days.

"I remember the club being quite a grand building and in those days it was more of like a gentleman's club. Even from when I was a youngster, I've treated it like family, an extensive of my own home. That's what we try to encourage.

"It was probably a lot more formal then, we had a lot of staff and all the boats had paid hands but now it's changed a lot. We’re all very active in our boats and it's very much more hands-on maintaining the boats because we're all custodians of the boats.

"I think the nice thing is how we've managed to hold on to a lot of our traditions, but be open and informal. There's a lot the club does, we’re quite active in the local community in various different forms. The club does get involved with different charities and works to try to improve the area."

Inside the clubhouse, you can see a wealth of memorabilia, from historic photos of past members and commodores decorating the walls to the chair Queen Victoria would sit on when she visited the site. Through the generations, The Royal Mersey Yacht Club has welcomed a catalogue of well-known names from Merseyside and beyond.

This includes J Bruce Ismay, chairman of White Star Line, who sketched out initial ideas for the superliner Titanic while a member there. Ian said: "We've tried to keep our history alive and like a lot of clubs we've still got original assets. It's not just club history, but the history of the people involved.

"The club was really formed by all the ship owners. You had people like Lord Derby, Lady Fazakerley , Lady Leverhulme, they were all involved. What's interesting is Lady Fazakerley in the 1870s was the first lady member of any Royal Club within that year.

"The club was one of the first to do Olympic racing back in the 1860s when there was an Olympic festival in Liverpool. I think in the 1870s it moved to Llandudno, but the club put races on over four years for those festivals.

"We’re the only club that's actually had a member that's won America's Cup because Vanderbilt was a member and he won in 1903. We had members taking medical supplies to Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War. The history of the club is amazing."

The Royal Mersey Yacht Club today f ocuses on one-design keelboat racing, with fleets of Etchells, Squibs and the iconic Mersey Mylne boat, designed specifically for the club. Specialising in sailing and racing keelboats, sports boats and cruisers, the club, which currently has over 150 members, runs a series of taster and training events to welcome members from all walks of life.

Throughout the year, the club also hosts a number of social events, from regular suppers to formal dinners and the occasional ball. The Club House is also available for private functions.

Ian said: "When Frank Field used to come to the club, he used to say it is Wirral's hidden gem. I think it is, because we've maintained a lot of our traditions and history but we’ve updated things, we've not stood still."

Carys Jarvis, 63, joined the Royal Mersey Yacht Club around 20 years ago and in March of this year was appointed Commodore. Carys made history becoming the first female Commodore elected in the club's 180-year history.

Carys, from Upton, told the ECHO: "I didn't start sailing until I was in my 40s - it was known to me. I didn't know a name from one end of a boat to another, but when I got involved, I just loved it. It’s a really lovely club.

"I was made to feel really welcome and there was loads of training and guidance and help from the other members. I never thought for one minute 20 years later I'd be a Commodore and the first female Commodore in the club's history.

"It was an honour - I was very proud. It's a prestigious club and I care very much about the club I was proud and honoured that the members wanted me to be the Commodore because it's the members that vote for you.

"I care about the members, they've become friends over the years and I'd say it's one big happy family. Its heritage is very important and it's local history and there's so many people don't know.

"Where it is, it is hidden away - it's not on the main road. It's at the back of where the Refreshment Rooms are so it's not seen by the main road. You've got the history on the walls, pictures of former Commodores, former members, the history of the shipping on the river - it’s really quite spectacular."

Carys said one of her favourite things about the club is the different courses it offers and seeing the development of its members. Carys said: "It's really good fun on the river, it's lovely. You can come out of work stressed and go straight to the club, on a boat, have a lovely sail, and watch the sunsets.

"We race around the buoys so we can sail up to Eastham, Garston , New Brighton and then come back to the club and have all your tea ready and the bar is open. You see things so differently when you're on a little boat on the river.

"You have the ferry boats going past, you've got the Liverpool waterfront - it’s amazing. At the end of the year, we have an awards dinner and we do prize-givings.

"Equally the club recognises people who don't win but who always turn up, who are happy to help or happy to train and guide people. We just want to see people happy.

"I want to see our club grow, I want to see membership grow. We've got great sailing and I'm really proud of that."
