A little bit of history to begin with. The name originates from the Spanish language, with the word flota meaning simply a fleet of ships. That doesn't come as a surprise, flotilla does sound Spanish. And it accurately describes what flotilla is, it's a group of yachts that are chartered and they sail and explore the sailing area together. There is also one yacht and crew that is in charge, and they lead the other yacht along the sailing route.

While the name might come from Spain, the first flotilla ever actually sailed in Greece, back in the 1970s. The concept of flotilla yacht charter is still relevant today, although it did go through some changes since its beginning. Most importantly, it used to be a bit more rigid, all the yachts in flotilla had to strictly follow the route and schedule, but now flotilla offers a lot more flexibility.

Of course, no one is obliged to participate, the choice is yours. All you have to do is get on the rendezvous point in the agreed time.

Kornati Flotilla Yacht Charters 

Book one of our sailing yachts specially adjusted for flotilla day sailors and discover the beauties of central Adriatic in a relaxing Mediterranean fashion.

How does it work?

Flotilla yacht charter program is designed specially for day skippers who want additional structure and support on their  yacht charter vacation in Croatia .

Before your departure, your will receive all the details and information about flotilla trip in your boarding pass. The office staff in marina Split or Biograd will be waiting for you to start your check in procedure on your  bareboat yacht charter .

Skippers will first have a short meeting with our organizing team. We recommend you to stock the boat's lockers before we set sail. Grocery shop is near the marina in Biograd. Don't worry, there will be lots of opportunities to supply your boat along the way.

Boarding time is Saturday after 3:00 PM. Once you setteled in, your leading skipper will inform you with route details and your sailing odyssey can start...

Navigate your yacht independently on an easy line-of-sight sailing

Now it is time to hoist those sails, start to enjoy, relax and sail your worries away, gliding across the blue waters of Adriatic. Our flotillas usually sail on the line-of-sight-navigation, trying to keep distances small with lots of stops in lovely coves, carefully chosen by your leading crew.

On daily basis, your lead skipper  will update you with the route details and daily dynamics. After everyday briefing skippers will be left to explore the high seas on their own if preffered. Whether you’re looking for some exciting solo sailing or searching for the perfect beach, you can sail with confidence knowing that any assistance from your lead crew is only a phone or a radio call away. You are welcome to join our flotilla friends for evening social events and share your daily adventures or just explore the beautiful sites at your own pace.

First day on every flotilla week we host one welcome dinner.

One of the highlights on our flotillas is visiting Kornati national park. It is among the Croatia's most idyllic destinations. No shops or cars can be found within the iconic Kornati island chain which consists of over 140 unique yellow-coned islands, islets and rocks. 

Reserved especially for maritime visitors this is one of the rare intact secluded treasures of Adriatic and the an idyllic place to spend one or 2 sailing days in Croatia surrounded with serenity and pure nature.

The continental part includes only ¼ of the surface of the park, while the rest belongs to the rich marine eco-system and is protected by the state authority since 1980.

The lunar landscapes of this impressive surroundings makes Kornati one of the natural wonders in Croatia. Having a nice romantic dinner inside the park is simply a must.

The entrance ticket is already included in your flotilla fee, so feel free to relax and enjoy in a remarkable ambiance of the natural environment in a comfortable accommodations of your private yacht.

What is a flotilla sailing holiday?

In Croatia flotilla sailing holiday you sail as a part of a group of bareboat yachts, sailing on a shared 1 or 2-week itinerary. Flotilla is usually guided by your leading crew of one head skipper and a hostess coordinating the yachts and provide you with the advice and support that a day skipper from each crew needs. The number of yachts that can join for certain week is between 5 and 10. We advise you to check availability and  rent sailboat in Croatia at least 3-6 months before your departure dates.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in Croatia?

Renting a sailboat for a flotilla yacht charter in Croatia mostly depends on the boat size , age and the sailing season . The price on 3-cabin bareboat  sailing boat  in May starts at  1.600€.

What qualifications do you need to charter a yacht in Croatia?

Chartering a bareboat sailboat in Croatia requires a valid skipper's license, issued by the state authority of the country that you are coming from. For sailing in the Croatian territorial waters, you need a valid nautical international certificate of competence (ICC) and a VHF radio license . The adventure starts in marina kornati Biograd only 20 minutes away from Zadar airport where our yachts are moored.

How many boats are in a flotilla?

Our flotilla capacity is 10 sailing yachts per week. All our bareboat charters in Croatia are contemporary equipped and customized for charter  purposes and easy to handle.

Is Croatia good for sailing?

Croatia is one of the most popular and affordable sailing destinations in the world and the leading Mediterranean country in yacht charter business. With dry climate, sunny wather, low winds, warm seas and untouched landscapes, Croatian coast is ideal place for a relaxing sailing holiday . Hundreds of densely scattered Dalmatian islands, well-protected island ports and anchorages assure safe sailing conditions and easy island hopping.

Is sailing better in Croatia or Greece?

The main difference between Croatia and Greece is in the sailing distance you have to cover between the islands. In Greek seas the islands are much further from each other, while in Croatia the distances to navigate among the islands only takes a couple of hours. That is why sailing in Croatia is ideal for a family yacht trip, beginners, day sailors and groups that wish to spend some extra time exploring the islands and prefer more stops during the day for swimming and snorkeling.

What should I bring on a flotilla holidays?

8 things that you don't want to forget:.

•  boarding pass/voucher & nautical ICC certificate of competence
•   bathing suit or a swimsuit and a hat to protect you from sunbeams
•   your passport, or personal ID, enough cash (EUROS), health insurance
•   sailing shoes with rubber sole
•   swimming towels
•   your personal items (prescription pills, medicine for allergy...)
•   a wind stopper or a wind breaker in summer a long-sleeved cardigan would do
•   positive vibes (leave your worries at home)

Do I need a skipper for attending Croatian flotillas?

Flotilla yacht charter is designed specially for "day skippers" who want an additional support on their sailing week in Croatia. You can also hire a local skipper if none of your crew owns  adequate sailing license , or if you are insecure into your sailing abilities.

Active Sailing team will be more than happy to offer the advice and assistance of our experienced croatian skippers that know the area and flotilla routes. They are knowledgeable, open-minded and fluent in English. Your skipper will sail the boat on the line-of-sight navigation and hold a "mini" sailing course if you wish to gain some maritime skills.

How much is a skipper in Croatia?

The skipper's fee on flotilla week ranges between  1.260 & 1.400euros  per week depending on the boat size and is payable directly to skipper at the check in.

Is sailing in Croatia safe?

Croatia is the cradle of a  sailing holiday  itinary and among safest European sailing destinations. About our Location

Sail in Croatia from our base in Seget, just a 15 min drive from Split airport. Seget is located outside the historic fortress-town of Trogir. You may also sail from Dubrovnik if you wish to explore the south of Croatia or even set sails to Montenegro.

The highest season is from mid-June to mid-September. The shoulder season is a great time to sail as there is usually more wind at this time. Our bases in Croatia are closed from early November until mid-March.

The currency in Croatia is the Euro (EUR).

Yacht Fuel is not included – the fuel tank will be full when your charter starts and you are responsible for topping off the fuel tank at the end of your charter. The price of the Carefree Pack varies by boat size and is a flat fee for bookings up to one week. A surcharge applies for bookings of 2+ weeks.

Croatia flotilla holidays offer the chance to sail in stunning scenery with good winds and a mixture of town harbours, marinas and anchorages (often with buoys) to greet you at the end of the day.

The flotilla holidays in Croatia mainly sail the Dalmatia coast. Sailing from Split or Trogir you have a choice: You can explore the northern part, including the Kornati Park or the central region which includes the islands south of Split. If you can spare two weeks, you can do both.

Sailing from Dubrovnik , the flotilla covers the south Dalmatian coast. This includes the islands north west of the city. Those wishing for a two week trip can combine this with a week visiting Montenegro.

Where ever you go, it’s mixture of coastal sailing and island hopping with stops ranging from quiet bays and fishing villages to historic towns.

Croatian flotillas are ideal for those with some previous sailing experience. Though I’ve known beginners tackle Croatia successfully, you do need to do some navigating. The many islands can look awfully similar from a distance!

Winds can be a little strong and gusty at times, especially in summer. But the many islands keep the seas fairly flat.

The Croatian climate will appeal to those who like it a little less hot, its more northerly position making it cooler than Greece and Turkey. As a result, the operating season is shorter – from May to September.

The number of Croatia flotillas has reduced in recent years. This is more to do with changing regulations which make it hard for overseas operators to run yachts in Croatia, than because of any decline in interest. It is also essential for the skipper to hold a recognised qualification – it’s the law and checks are made! Of course skippers can be hired for those without qualifications.

If you’ve previously sailed in Greece or Turkey, Croatia flotilla sailing has a surprise in store. Mooring fees are routinely charged in marinas, harbours and even on mooring buoys and can seem expensive (though compared to Italy or France they’re not so bad)!

Charges are based on yacht size so the larger your yacht the more you pay. Even a small yacht can incur marina fees of £60-£80 a night and with most flotillas you don’t have the option of seeking out a cheaper anchoring option, as you would on a bareboat charter. Charges are less in harbours and on buoys and of course these costs are offset by the fact that flights to Croatia are usually cheaper.

In return, you will usually get shore power, toilet and shower blocks and often a restaurant, so Croatia flotillas are ideal for those who like their creature comforts. Not all marinas are featureless concrete monstrosities either – some are little more than a pontoon built around the edge of  a bay.

Whether you’re drawn by the stunning scenery, the historic buildings or the excellent sailing, Croatia flotilla holidays have it all. Don’t leave it too late though – this is and international charter destination and our European friends don’t all book at late as we Brits tend to.

Our Learn to Sail, Skipper Training, Flotilla and Bareboat charter holidays in Croatia started at the end of April and will operate on all weeks until the end of October. To date most people travelling have come from mainland Europe, as travel for them is easier, but from mid July onwards we look forward to welcoming many more people from countries like the UK and Ireland, which is where many of our clients come from.

Flights are now all operating and entering Croatia involves following straightforward testing guidelines or providing evidence of vaccination, and the details of what is required for arrivals from all countries, can be viewed on the Croatia government web site here (opens in a new tab).

While in Croatia all accepted protocols for protection against the spread of Covid like enhanced cleaning, social distancing, wearing of face masks in shops, etc are followed. Restaurants and shops are all open and in general as sailing activities are mostly outdoor, it is regarded as a low risk activity and holidays can operate with minimal disruption.

For people requiring testing before they depart after a holiday these are easily arranged in Croatia and we are adapting our flotilla routes to ensure that people can all book tests at the appropriate time. A rapid test with the result in English costs about 250Kuna while a PCR test costs about 600kuna. Further guidance on test centres in Croatia are available here

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.
