The 1990’s brought about many new and exciting trends and one of them was the creation of a wonderful brand. It’s founder was actually Freedom Yachts of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a builder of top notch sailing yachts, which helped the new boats have a strong welcoming by the Freedom fans themselves. The birth of a new vessel named the Legacy was welcomed by the industry for their outstanding performance speed, superior handling, comfort, and a solid build to stand up to the oceans most high. Especially popular were the Legacy 40, designed by Mark Ellis, along with designer, Bill Langan’s Legacy 28 of Freedom Yachts. The two were the foundation for many more to come and turned heads with their handsome appeal and speedy performance. Freedom Yacht’s philosophy of boat building was looked upon by many as revolutionary throughout North America and a huge following began.

Legacy Yachts: A Gentleman’s Cruising Boat

15th mar 2019 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

The classic Downeast-style boat has been a favorite among seasoned boaters since they were first introduced as a recreational vessel. Born as a working boat for fisherman off of the coast of Maine, the deep-v hull and bow flare are able to tame the rough waters of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Today, there are several manufacturers worldwide that continue to produce different variations of Downeast yachts, yet none with the quite the same history and pedigree as Legacy.

Legacy Yachts were first introduced in the early 1990s through Freedom Yachts in Rhode Island which was a builder of high-quality sailing yachts. Built for speed, performance, and efficiency, the first Legacy’s were a 40’ Downeast yacht designed by Mark Ellis and a 28’ lobster-style day boat. As the boats grew in popularity, Legacy started to become a leader in the boating industry until the global economic recession of 2008.

But with adversity comes opportunity and it was the esteemed sailing yacht builder Tartan Yachts , who acquired Legacy Yachts in 2010 and moved production to their state-of-the-art factory in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. With access to the highest quality materials available and innovative design and construction techniques, the Legacy brand would be able to achieve a higher level of quality. Today, the Tartan factory offers 3 Legacy models: The 42, 36, and 32.

Legacy Yachts 36 Running

“Legacy Yachts Have Good Bones”

While many boat builders today rely on fancy new components, electronics, and gadgets to set themselves apart from the competition. Legacy Yachts simply goes back to the basics of using the best possible materials in the best possible methods to produce a boat with “good bones”. All of the laminates used on Legacy’s hulls are a unique combination of uni-directional E-glass, synthetic foam coring, and an epoxy-modified vinyl ester resin, which when combined, results in one of the strongest and impact-resistant laminates in the industry. The vinylester resin, which has better properties than polyester resin or epoxy but it also more expensive, is infused into the hull via a vacuum bag which sucks the air out and allows the resin to fill any voids.

This painstaking process means that production isn’t as fast as some builders, but the end result is a hull that is strong, stiff, and flexible. The difference can be felt at sea when the waves get a little rough. Other benefits of the resin-infusion process are that each Legacy looks newer longer. Polyester hulls, when exposed to long periods of sunlight, will begin a post-curing process which causes the resin to shrink and thereby making the hull look worn and dated. Legacy Yachts also have a resin-to-glass ratio of 30% resin and 70% fiberglass, which is the opposite of the 70-30 ratio than other Downeast-style manufacturers use in their deck construction. Legacy’s tend to last longer and look better, even when sunlight and constant high temperatures try to wear it down.

Classically Elegant Interiors That Are Simply Beautiful

Legacy Yachts Custom Interiors

Setting foot inside the salon of a Legacy Yacht is akin to walking into a beautiful mountain home with wood accents, furniture, and the classically rustic appeal. Every interior on a Legacy is custom designed and built for each owner’s specific standards and taste. From the solid cherry doors to the teak flooring to the custom carved cabinetry, everything inside a Legacy Yacht is real, high-quality natural wood. You will never find any fake or man-made products passed off as wood on this boat. Every piece has even been cut for accuracy on a CNC machine, ensuring that every cabinet door is flush and no gapes are present where the interior walls meet.

Teak handrails are strategically placed throughout the boat from the cabin to the helm for safety when the boat is underway. All of the corners and edges of the furniture and throughout the companionway are rounded as well in the event someone loses their footing. There are countless examples throughout each Legacy model that create a world-class ownership experience and displays the Tartan factory’s keen attention to detail.

Look no further than the doors on the Legacy to see a shining example of design ingenuity and execution by the craftsmen building each piece. Real cherry wood is used in each passage door as well as the door jambs and has raised panels for a distinguishing appearance. Again, this sounds like a small detail, but when compared to the doors on other boats that were merely an after-thought, it becomes apparent that Legacy is floating work of art.

Legacy Yachts: A Breath  Of Fresh Air

Legacy Yachts Superior Ventilation

Back in the days of ocean voyages, passengers often slept below deck in dark rooms without windows or fresh air. On a Legacy, no owner or guest will ever feel like they are trapped in a dungeon with no light or breeze. While they can’t control the sunlight, Legacy can, however, control how much air is able to move throughout the boat. Ventilation is one of the most important and well-planned design aspects of today’s Legacy models.

The portholes and hatches aren’t just any generic pieces of hardware on a Legacy. While other brands might use lesser quality hatches that are less expensive, they also typically underperform when it comes to air flow. Legacy’s hatches are stainless steel, CE-approved deck hatches that are up to the test of ocean crossings. Portholes are strategically placed throughout the boat to maximize ventilation opportunities for the comfort of everyone on board. Each hatch is even equipped with a low profile shade screen to keep the air flowing while keeping unwanted bugs outside. There is simply nothing more relaxing than sleeping on our Legacy Yacht with the hatches open and listening to the waves as they meet the fiberglass of your hull.

Legacy Yachts are timeless, classic pieces of hand-crafted art that happen to have an engine inside of them. Whether you have aspirations of cruising the Great Loop or entertaining a few friends on the water, the Legacy model line offers the quality, performance, and elegance that cruising boaters desire. What Makes Legacy Yachts Different From Other Downeast Boats?

legacy yacht

Legacy Yachts may look like your classic downeast-style boat with its signature bow flare and protected pilothouse, but there is nothing ordinary about it once you take a peek under the engine hatch. The timeless Legacy design is reminiscent of the Maine lobster boats where the style originated years ago, yet today Legacy is on the cutting-edge of boat building. In 2010, Legacy Yachts was acquired by the esteemed Tartan Marine Company that builds Tartan Sailboats . Legacy's models were already known for their maneuverability and performance, but adding Tartan's advanced techniques and high-end materials to the process brought Legacy to an entirely new level of quality.

"There is a fine line between romance and obsession and no shame in either emotion. Focused properly, obsession can be channeled to create excellence." -Tartan Marine

Legacy Hulls

The hull of each Legacy Yacht built has decades of experience behind its shape and design. Tartan's commitment to using the very best materials and most advanced construction techniques has allowed Legacy to flourish when it comes to the quality of each hull. Known for being durable and stiff, each Legacy hull is resin-infused and vacuum-bagged to maintain a low-resin, high-fiber content. The epoxy-modified vinylester resin, the unidirectional E-glass, and the foam coring produce the strongest laminate for the hull of any other boat in its class. These materials combined with the infusion process create a practically impenetrable hull as well as keeping the boat lighter for better efficiency. Other builders use polyester resin which simply cannot match the same strength and durability as the materials used in each Legacy Yacht.

legacy yacht

An additional benefit to the process used at the Tartan factory is the aesthetic differences seen in Legacy hulls compared to other brands. Once a hull built with polyester laminate is exposed to extreme temperature changes and hours of sunlight, there is a post-curing process that occurs which causes an 8% resin shrinkage in volume. This affects the sleek, shiny look of the hull and can affect its appearance. Legacy's hulls do not experience this same shrinking in volume due to the vinylester resin and thus remain looking newer for a longer period of time. This also helps resale value!

The Difference In Each Legacy Deck

Just as important as the performance of each hull is the strength of each deck on a boat. Being that this is where the owner and guests on board spend the entirety of their trip, it's important that each deck is durable, but will also look good for years after its first launched. Similarly to how the Legacy hulls are constructed, each deck goes through the same vinylester-resin, vacuum-bagged infusion process to ensure that the resin-to-glass ratio is perfect. The result is one of the strongest and stiffest decks on any boat in its class.

Typically when a deck is constructed on a boat, it's up to the individual laminator to hand lay the fiberglass. The hope is that he does a good job and there is no air left in between the balsa core and the glass. If so, the strength and durability of the hull or deck can become compromised. The Tartan factory uses a closed-molded system where both the fabric and the balsa core is laid down dry at the same time. The deck is then vacuum bagged, the air sucked out entirely, and then the high-quality resin infused in its place. This leaves absolutely no room for air bubbles and a deck that is going to be strong and look stunning for a very long time. Additionally, the weight of the boat becomes lighter and thus increasing efficiency!

legacy yacht

Living Spaces Meant For Living

So many boat designs today focus on the outside only to let the inside become an after-thought. Decorating the inside of your yacht is as important as that of your home, particularly if overnight trips are planned. The interior of each Legacy model is both functional and luxuriously comfortable. Legacy allows each owner to customize their interiors to suit how they plan on using the boat. No expenses are spared and no shortcuts are made when it comes to the interior accommodations.

legacy yacht

What does it mean it mean to not take any shortcuts? Every piece of the interior is CNC cut for accuracy and precision. There are no spaces or holes, everything fits together perfectly. Wood is bent in Tartan's in-house woodshop for beautiful curving that runs continuously through the salon and cabins. The Tartan factory prides itself on not using any fake or man-made woods, but instead opting to use high-quality natural wood like solid cherry for the interiors. The bending of the wood in-house allows Tartan to build the interior of each Legacy without sharp corners or edges, making it safer to move about if the sea gets rough. The wood is even thick enough that it can be continually refinished for many years after the boat is first launched.

legacy yacht

Just as important as having a comfortable cabin is the ability to fill the interior with sunlight and fresh air. Legacy takes extra care to make sure each model has maximum ventilation opportunities in the salon and cabin. Every hatch and opening is stainless steel which prevents leakage and keeps the interior air-tight if desired. Each opening can be outfitted with a low profile shade screen to keep the air flowing and the bugs outside.

Three Legacy Models To Choose From

The Legacy Yachts 42

legacy yacht

The Legacy 42 is said to "combine heirloom quality fit and finish with scorching performance," in an article by Yachting Magazine, The performance is a result of the Volvo Penta IPS 400 310HP twin engines that cruise at 28.7 knots with a 29.5 knot top speed. The Legacy 42 can run for 601 nautical miles at that cruising speed. Enjoy the joystick handling that comes with the steerable drive pods, but also the 30% sound reduction over competing models in its class that use an inboard shaft drive. Multiple layouts of the 42 are available as well and can be customized for just one couple with a large master cabin. Or if guests will be on board, there is an additional cabin layout that offers a single berth that can convert to a double. Learn more about the Legacy 42 here .

The Legacy Yachts 36

legacy yacht

"I don't want a big boat, I want a small boat, but I want to be comfortable." This quote was given to the editor of Power & Motor Yacht Magazine by a new owner of a Legacy 36. It perfectly describes the intentions of the Tartan factory with the middle model in the Legacy line. The Legacy 36 offers high-performance coupled with good fuel efficiency, characteristics seen throughout all of Tartan's yachts. The hull shape is a deep-V and has wide chine and centerline flats for excellent planing at low speeds. The base engine package includes the Cummins QSB 6.7 480hp electronic diesel engine, but owners have the option to upgrade to the 550hp engines for more speed. The latter engine choice can produce a top end speed of over 27 knots and a 9.7 gph fuel burn while cruising at 11.4 knots. Learn more about the Legacy 36 here .

The Legacy Yachts 32

legacy yacht

The Legacy 32 may be the smallest of the three models, but she definitely doesn't feel small when sitting inside. The crowning achievement on board the Legacy 32 is undoubtedly the engine room, which once you have seen inside, will understand the important of what Tartan has done. Every fitting, system, installation, and component is carefully thought through and executed resulting in more reliable systems, efficiency, and performance. The 32 is powered by an electronic Cummins diesel engine that is offered at 380and 420 horsepower. The entire engine room has been insulated and then molded in so the boat is extremely quiet and the surfaces are easy to clean. With the Cummins 420HP engine, the Legacy 32 can cruise between 20-24 knots with a top speed of 25.4 knots. Learn more about the Legacy Yachts 32 here .

Who is Mike Lynch? A look at the British tech tycoon missing from a sunken yacht in Sicily

legacy yacht

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch, one of six people missing from a sunken yacht off Sicily, had been trying to move past a Silicon Valley debacle that had tarnished his legacy as an icon of British ingenuity.

Lynch, 59, struck gold when he sold Autonomy, a software maker he founded in 1996, to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011 . But the deal quickly turned into an albatross for him after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale and fired by HP's then-CEO Meg Whitman.

He was cleared of criminal charges in the U.S. in June, but still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil case in London.

A decade-long legal battle had resulted in his extradition from the U.K. to face criminal charges of engineering a massive fraud against HP, a company that helped shape Silicon Valley's zeitgeist after starting in a Palo Alto, California, garage in 1939.

Lynch steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP's own bungling — a position he maintained while testifying before a jury during a 2 1/2 month trial in San Francisco earlier this year. U.S. Justice Department prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses in an attempt to prove allegations that Lynch engaged in accounting duplicity that bilked billions of dollars from HP.

The trial ended up vindicating Lynch and he pledged to return to the U.K. and explore new ways to innovate.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced the civil case in London that HP mostly won during 2022. Damages haven't been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

Before becoming entangled with HP, Lynch was widely hailed as a visionary who inspired descriptions casting him as the British version of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Lynch, a Cambridge-educated mathematician, made his mark running Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. Autonomy's steady growth during its first decade resulted in Lynch being awarded one of the U.K's highest honors, the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006.

In the months leading up to the deal that would go awry, HP valued Autonomy at $46 billion, according to evidence presented at Lynch's trial.

The trial also presented contrasting portraits of Lynch. Prosecutors painted him as an iron-fisted boss obsessed with hitting revenue targets, even if it meant resorting to duplicity. But his lawyers cast him as entrepreneur with integrity and a prototypical tech nerd who enjoyed eating cold pizza late at night while pondering new ways to innovate.

Luxury yachts and other myths: How Republican lawmakers echo Russian propaganda

A woman examines the rubble of a destroyed building

Two senior Republican lawmakers, the chairs of the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees, say their colleagues are echoing Russian state propaganda against Ukraine.

Researchers who study disinformation say Reps. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, and Michael McCaul, R-Texas, are merely acknowledging what has been clear for some time: Russian propaganda aimed at undermining U.S. and European support for Ukraine has steadily seeped into America’s political conversation over the past decade, taking on a life of its own.

McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Puck News he thinks “Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it’s infected a good chunk of my party’s base.”

Turner, chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN that anti-Ukraine messages from Russia are “being uttered on the House floor.”

Reps. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, and Mike Turner, R-Ohio, leave a House Republican Conference candidate forum

For the past decade, since Russia’s first military incursion into Ukraine in 2014, Moscow has spread propaganda and disinformation in a bid to undercut U.S. and European military support for Ukraine, according to U.S. and Western officials.

Some of the arguments, distortions and falsehoods spread by Russia have taken root, mostly among right-wing pro-Trump outlets and Republican politicians, researchers say, including that Ukraine’s government is too corrupt to benefit from Western aid and that the Biden family has alleged corrupt ties to Ukraine.

Russia, in keeping with traditional propaganda techniques, seeks to make its case and tarnish Ukraine through a mixture of outright falsehoods, half-truths, inferences or simply amplifying and promoting arguments already being made by American or European commentators and politicians, researchers say.

The propaganda is sometimes spread covertly, through fake online accounts, or openly by Russian officials and state media. As a result, the origin of some allegations or criticisms is often opaque, especially when a certain accusation or perception has gained wide acceptance, leaving no clear fingerprints.

Early in the war, a false story boosted by Russian propaganda — that the U.S. had helped Ukraine build biological weapons labs — gained traction on right-wing social media and was touted by then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Russia also is conducting a parallel propaganda campaign in Europe. Belgium’s prime minister said Thursday that his government is investigating alleged Russian bribes to members of the European Parliament as part of Moscow’s campaign to undermine support for Ukraine. Czech law enforcement officials last month alleged that a former pro-Russian member of Ukraine’s parliament, Viktor Medvedchuk, was behind a Prague-based Russian propaganda network designed to promote opposition to aiding Ukraine.

Here are some examples of Republican lawmakers using arguments often promoted by Russian propaganda:

Buying yachts

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress behind closed doors in December to appeal for more U.S. help for his country’s troops, some lawmakers raised questions about Ukraine allegedly buying yachts with American aid money.

Zelenskyy made clear that was not the case, according to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a strong supporter of arming Ukraine. “I think the notion of corruption came up because some have said we can’t do it, because people will buy yachts with the money,” Tillis told CNN. “[Zelenskyy] disabused people of those notions.”

Where did the yacht rumor come from?

Pro-Russian actors and websites promoted a narrative alleging Zelenskyy bought two superyachts with U.S. aid dollars. One Russia-based propaganda site, DC Weekly , published a story last November that included photos of two luxury yachts, called Lucky Me and My Legacy , which it alleged were bought for $75 million.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine, in November retweeted a post about the alleged yacht purchase from the Strategic Culture Foundation, a Russian-based propaganda outlet directed by Russia’s intelligence services, according to the Treasury Department. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the organization, accusing it of spreading disinformation and interfering in U.S. elections.

Another outspoken critic of aid to Ukraine, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, also made a similar claim.

In a December interview with former President Donald Trump’s White House adviser Steve Bannon, Vance claimed that members of Congress wanted to cut Social Security benefits to provide more aid to Ukraine, and that money would allegedly be used for Zelenskyy’s ministers to “buy a bigger yacht.”

“There are people who would cut Social Security, throw our grandparents into poverty. Why? So that one of Zelenskyy’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht?” Vance said. “Kiss my ass, Steve. It’s not happening.”

Donald Trump looks as J.D. Vance speaks.

The tale of Zelenskyy’s luxury yacht, however, turned out to be totally false . The yachts cited in the DC Weekly article remain up for sale , the owners told The Associated Press.

Two academics at Clemson University, disinformation researchers Darren Linvill and Patrick Warren, found that DC Weekly ran numerous stories copied from other sites that were rewritten by artificial intelligence engines. The articles had bylines with fake names along with headshots copied from other online sites. DC Weekly appeared to be a Russian effort to launder false information through a seemingly legitimate news site as part of an attempt to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine, according to the researchers .

Asked by reporters about Vance’s comments, Tillis said: “I think it’s bullshit. ...If you’re talking about giving money to Ukrainian ministers — total and unmitigated bullshit.”

Greene’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Vance’s spokesperson said the senator was making a rhetorical point about how he opposed sending U.S. assistance to what he sees as a corrupt country, but was not asserting the yacht stories online were accurate.

Vance’s office referred NBC News to an earlier response to the BBC on the same topic:

“For years, everyone in the West recognized that Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Somehow everyone forgot that just as we started sending them billions of dollars in foreign aid.”

Enabling ‘corruption’

Russian state media for years has painted Ukraine as deeply corrupt, and has argued that the U.S. and its allies are wasting money and military hardware by assisting such an allegedly corrupt government.

“This is absolutely a line that they have pushed, and then once it appears in the Western ecosystem, other [Russian] media picks it up and it gets recycled back,” said Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

This line of argument has gained traction partly because Ukraine does face a genuine corruption problem.

Russia’s effort to focus attention on corruption in Ukraine reflects a long-established propaganda method of using facts or partial truths to anchor a broader assertion or accusation, sometimes making a leap in logic, Schafer and other researchers said. Russia’s message amounts to: Ukraine is corrupt, therefore U.S. and Western aid will be stolen and wasted.

Schafer said it was ironic for Russia, a country mired in corruption and kleptocracy, to be leveling accusations about corruption.

Republican Rep. Mary Miller has said she strongly opposes more assistance for Ukraine because it amounts to sending cash to “corrupt oligarchs.”

“With Zelensky coming to DC this week to ask for more money, I will continue to vote AGAINST sending your tax $$ to corrupt oligarchs in Ukraine for a proxy war that could have ended in ‘22,” Miller wrote in a post on X in December.

The Illinois lawmaker also echoed another assertion that often appears in Russian media, that the Biden administration allegedly undermined efforts by Russia to avoid war with Ukraine.

“A peace deal was on the table that [Ukraine] and [Russia] were both ready to sign, but Biden said NO,” she wrote.

There was in fact no proposed peace agreement that Russia and Ukraine were prepared to sign before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to U.S. and European officials. As Russian troops massed on the border of Ukraine, Western governments urged Russia not to invade and warned there would be economic and diplomatic consequences.

Reuters has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a possible deal to avert a war that had been discussed with Kyiv by Russia’s envoy to Ukraine. The Kremlin said the report was inaccurate and has said Russia tried for years to arrive at an understanding with Ukraine.

As for corruption in Ukraine, Zelenskyy has vowed to tackle the problem, sacking senior officials in some recent cases. But some civil society groups have criticized his approach and Ukrainians say corruption is the country’s second-most serious problem, after the Russian invasion, according to a poll conducted last year.

In an annual survey, Transparency International said Ukraine made progress toward addressing the issue and now ranks 104th out of 180 countries on its Corruption Perceptions Index , climbing 12 places up from its previous ranking.

Ukraine is not alone among countries that receive U.S. and other foreign aid but struggle with corruption. Supporters of assisting Ukraine argue it would undermine America’s influence in the world and its humanitarian efforts if Washington withheld foreign aid from every country where there were reports of corruption.

Miller’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The Biden family and Ukraine

Republicans have repeatedly alleged that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter have corrupt ties to Ukraine, and that they sought $5 million in bribes from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma to protect the firm from an investigation by Ukraine’s prosecutor general.

There is no credible evidence for the allegations. A key source for the accusations against the Bidens is a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested in February on federal charges of fabricating the bribery claims. Smirnov says he was fed information by Russian intelligence.

Republicans had heavily promoted Smirnov’s allegations against the Bidens, seeing them as crucial to a planned impeachment effort against the president that has since fizzled .

“In my estimation, that is probably the clearest example of Russian propaganda working its way into the American political system,” said Emerson Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council.

GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona cited the false bribery allegations in expressing his opposition to providing assistance to Ukraine.

“In exchange for … bribe money from Ukraine, Joe Biden has dished out over $100 billion in taxpayer money to fund the war in Ukraine. I will not assist this corruption by sending more money to the authoritarian Ukrainian regime,” Gosar said in a statement in October.

Gosar’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The Morning

How biden changed his party.

We explore three ways the president has shaped the Democratic Party.

President Biden and the first lady, Jill Biden, stand at a podium as his first name is spelled out in vertical stripes behind them.

By David Leonhardt

President Biden has never exactly been a liberal Democrat or a conservative Democrat. He has instead stayed in his party’s mainstream. When the party moved right in the 1990s, he moved with it. When it moved left in the 2010s, so did he.

But Biden has not simply gone with the Democratic flow. Over his more than 50 years in politics, he has periodically shown strong opinions about how his party should change — and helped it do so.

Last night in Chicago, Biden took a big step in his long political goodbye, delivering a 52-minute speech at the Democratic convention . In today’s newsletter, I’ll examine how Biden’s presidency shaped his party — and consider whether Kamala Harris is likely to continue these shifts. I think three points are key.

1. Biden’s neopopulism

Biden has always understood the class resentments that many Americans feel. (If you haven’t read Robert Draper’s profile of Biden for The Times Magazine, I recommend it , including the section in which Biden analyzes George W. Bush.)

Biden’s political career began in 1972, when he defeated an incumbent Republican senator in Delaware even as Richard Nixon won a landslide. Biden ran as a subtly different kind of Democrat, with a more working-class image than the party’s presidential nominee that year, George McGovern. Biden simultaneously distanced himself from the liberal fervor of the 1960s and portrayed himself as an economic populist. He criticized both draft dodgers and “millionaires who don’t pay any taxes at all.”

Five decades later, Biden became the most populist Democratic president in modern times. This positioning wasn’t just about his background, either. Populism has recently gained a new appeal, thanks to the failure of the market-based economic policies of the past half-century — which are often known as neoliberalism — to deliver broad-based prosperity.

Instead of focusing on trade deals, Biden tried to build up American manufacturing. He joined a picket line with autoworkers and appointed labor-friendly regulators. He gave Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices. He cracked down on “junk fees.” He tried to end decades of gentle antitrust regulation.

Biden devoted much of his speech last night to this agenda. He claimed to have rebuilt “the backbone of the middle class.” He said, “We finally beat big Pharma,” and “Wall Street didn’t build America, the middle class built America.” When the crowd chanted, “Union Joe,” he replied, “I agree. I’m proud.”

These economic policies are largely popular even though Biden is not. If the Democratic Party’s shift away from neoliberalism — toward what I’ve called neopopulism — continues, Biden’s presidency will be a major reason. And Harris’s initial economic proposals suggest that much of the shift will continue if she wins.

2. Bipartisanship lives

Biden loves to talk about how he has proved his doubters wrong, sometimes with a dash or two of hyperbole. Yet there is at least one aspect of his presidency for which he deserves to gloat: his surprising success at passing bipartisan legislation.

He has signed bipartisan bills on infrastructure, semiconductor chips, Ukraine aid and TikTok — as well as on anti-Asian hate crimes, the aviation system, the electoral process, gun violence, the Postal Service, same-sex marriage and veterans’ health. In a polarized Washington, Biden has demonstrated that bipartisanship remains possible.

“Remember, we were told we couldn’t get it done?” he asked in last night’s speech.

He drew on his long Senate career to help pass these bills. He refused to treat the Republican Party as the enemy and remained upbeat — and often in the background — even when negotiations stalled.

Would Harris show similar patience? And would congressional Republicans be willing to work with her? It’s hard to know.

3. A new cold war

Biden’s signature line about foreign policy is that the world is witnessing a struggle between democracy and autocracy . You can quibble with the details, but his basic point is correct.

U.S. allies are mostly democracies — including Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Australia, Mexico and Canada. The countries that treat the U.S. as an enemy are autocracies — China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. Increasingly, these autocracies are collaborating with one another.

Biden has defined the United States as the leading player in an alliance to combat autocracy. “Who can lead the world other than the United States of America?” he asked last night.

As president, he confronted China economically and promised to defend Taiwan. He rallied a pro-Ukraine coalition after Russia invaded. He withdrew from Afghanistan — chaotically — partly because of its limited strategic importance. He abandoned his initial reluctance to work with Saudi Arabia, an autocratic ally, and embraced it as a counterweight to Iran. He continued to embrace Israel for similar reasons, despite the death and destruction in Gaza.

Biden’s foreign policy is based on the idea that the world has entered a new cold war (even if he rejects the term). And Harris? Her campaign has said little about foreign policy or her worldview. Maybe that will start to change in Chicago this week.

More on the convention

“ America, I gave my best to you ,” Biden said in a speech that also criticized Donald Trump.

Biden called picking Harris as his running mate the best decision of his career. He joked that “like many of our best presidents, she was also vice president.”

Introduced by his daughter Ashley, Biden dabbed tears as convention delegates held signs reading “We ❤️ Joe.”

Speaking earlier, Hillary Clinton said, “On the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office .”

Several speakers contrasted Harris’s background with Trump’s felony convictions. Clinton smiled and nodded as the audience chanted “lock him up.”

Shawn Fain of the United Auto Workers union wore a T-shirt that read “Trump is a scab.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the House progressive, praised Harris for supporting populist economic policies and seeking a cease-fire in Gaza .

Biden and other speakers at times exaggerated or left out context. Read a fact check .

Senate Democrats in tough races, including Jon Tester of Montana and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, are skipping the convention .

A pro-Palestinian protest outside the hall was smaller than organizers had expected . The police detained a few people who lobbed signs and cans.

More on the campaign

Trump, campaigning in Pennsylvania , referred to Harris as “Comrade Kamala” and “an economy wrecker and a country destroyer.”

Iran hacked Trump’s campaign and tried to hack Biden and Harris’s, U.S. intelligence agencies said .

On social media, Trump shared A.I.-generated images suggesting that Taylor Swift had endorsed him . She hasn’t.

Legacy

Through the Years

The start of a legacy.

Primarily due to the product and design philosophy instilled by its founder, Freedom Yachts of Portsmouth Rhode Island, the Legacy brand developed a strong following of boating enthusiasts throughout North America. The first Legacy motor yachts were developed and built by Freedom, the builder of a high quality and innovative line of sailing yachts.

screen-shot-2016-12-29-at-5-05-04-pm

From the conception of the first Legacy in the 1990’s, they believed that the Legacy brand should lead the industry with yachts that provide efficient performance measured in speed, comfort, superior handling, and sound construction to withstand the rigors of the sea. The Legacy 40, a Mark Ellis designed Downeast yacht and the Legacy 28 designed by Bill Langan were both developed by Freedom Yachts in the late 90’s. These models set the tone for future Legacy models, great looks and efficient performance.

The Legacy 34, another Mark Ellis design filled the line to a 3 model offering and enjoyed a long production run with over 60 hulls produced. The largest Legacy produced was the Bill Langan designed 52.

Present day Legacy

In 2010 Tartan acquired Legacy and moved the Legacy 32 and 42 molds and tooling to its Fairport Ohio manufacturing facility. With the marine industry still recovering from the effects of the Great Recession, Legacy remained out of production until 2013/2014 when the first new Legacy, a 32 was built. Since that time, Tartan has stepped up the production of 32’s 42’s and recently launched the new Legacy 36, a design collaboration between Mark Ellis Design and the Tartan Design team, headed by Tim Jackett. The new Legacy’s all benefit from Tartan’s leading composite technologies, award winning interior craftsmanship and the best component suppliers in the industry to build great performing luxury cruising yachts, now power and sail.

Who is Mike Lynch? A look at the British tech tycoon missing from a sunken yacht in Sicily

Tech tycoon Mike Lynch, one of six people missing from a sunken yacht off Sicily, had been trying to move past a Silicon Valley debacle that had tarnished his legacy as an icon of British ingenuity

But the deal quickly turned into an albatross for him after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale and fired by HP’s then-CEO Meg Whitman.
