ROCK.IT Feadship Superyacht | From US$ 395,000 /wk

Built by the leading Dutch manufacturer Feadship, superyacht ROCK.IT (hull 687) is a striking 60.05 m (197') vessel, launched in 2014 and refitted in 2019. With naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects, luxury motor yacht ROCK.IT has been entirely designed by Sinot Yacht Design. She mixes up space-age looks with traditional comforts. Her accommodation incorporates 5 ensuite staterooms that sleep up to 11 charter guests. Her professional and friendly crew of 14 ensure everyone on board has a relaxing vacation and a wonderful experience.

NOTABLE FEATURES OF ROCK.IT: ~Beautifully maintained superyacht ~Plenty of al fresco entertainment space ~Deck jacuzzi ~Main deck master with his and hers ensuites ~Amazing selection of water toys ~At anchor and underway stabilisers ~Air conditioning ~WiFi

Across her 60m length and three deck levels, there is plenty of al fresco entertainment space where elegant furnishings offer a choice of dining, lounging and sunbathing. The sun deck is fabulous, with a forward jacuzzi area which finds a round spa pool surrounded by sun pads and sofas. The sofas wrap around the deck with tables and there is an elegant lounge setting with occasional chairs under the canopy where a skylight with tinted glass dims automatically depending on the strength of the sunlight. There is a bar for the crew to serve drinks and a spacious open deck aft furnished with a collection of moveable sun beds that can be flexibly positioned to make the most of the sun.

The bridge deck is the hub for al fresco dining with a stunning dining table that can seat everyone on board under the shelter of the sun deck overhang. There are two L-shaped sofas, one to port and one to starboard which face forward and surround flexible tables. Glass doors to the sky lounge recess into the superstructure to create a huge sociable space.

On the main deck aft a relaxed lounge area offers a u-shaped sofa surrounding additional tables and steps lead down to the water edge beach club and swim platform.

The interior is classically elegant and hugely spacious, being full-beam throughout. Mahogany and diagonally veneered sycamore panelling create a warm, welcoming and personal atmosphere. Meanwhile backlit white onyx in combination with Statuario and Portoro elevates the interior to a high level while retaining its family feel. The furniture is traditional but timeless and thoughtfully placed to offer guests a choice of comfortable areas to relax.

The sky lounge is configured with various seating arrangements which can be moved to create separate areas or one sociable space. There are plush sofas, stylish occasional chairs, cosy table settings and a splendid bar area with sit-up stools. Forward on the bridge deck finds a pantry, captains’ accommodation and office, plus the magnificent wheelhouse.

The main salon on the main deck is a truly stunning formal space with a lounge and dining room separated by a handsome built-in, low-level cabinet. The gloss wood finishes are complemented perfectly with cream sofas, chairs and soft furnishings finished with jewel-coloured velvet cushions. The entrance to the main salon from on deck is via a circular grand bar area with marble flooring and refined lighting.

Amidships on the main deck is the galley which is placed to port with dedicated crew staircases serving all levels and allowing for discrete service.

ROCK.IT Enquiry

“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

Owner of 60m Feadship superyacht ROCK.IT owner explains his design choices

  • Superyachts

Feadship's 60-metre beauty ROCK.IT is testament to the custom superyacht experience...

“When the doors slide open on the main deck, every time I come in there it just blows me away!” says Jimmy John Liautaud. Words spoken by a proud owner show just how 60.34-metre ROCK.IT has more than lived up to expectations after her first year on the water.

“ ROCK.IT is very sleek and bold without being pretentious,” says exterior and interior designer Sander Sinot of Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design. “A natural flow of lines and surfaces makes the yacht breathe speed and exude elegance.”

A marriage of cool Dutch design and hot American passion has given the yacht a unique soul, and, after her first year of cruising , ROCK.IT has taken on a personality of her own.

“The owner wanted to have a yacht that was fast from the outside and cosy from the inside,” says Sipke Halbertsma, sales manager at Feadship. “ ROCK.IT has a classic Feadship hull from the front, but if you look at her profile you’ll see the exterior lines work to make her look fast.”

However, the aggressive, forward movement of the exterior is softened by the interior, also by Sinot: a marriage of old Americana mahogany and modern Dutch minimalism. A surprising pairing, perhaps, but one that works hard to earn its keep as both a cosy family retreat and a raring-to-go party space.

Nothing is out of place, and the rooms don’t feel busy, but there is a warmth that pervades above all. It manages to be both contemporary and comfortable.

my rock it yacht

However, this is not just any mahogany. The highest quality crotched mahogany was sourced and then ‘folded’ out, so that the panels all match symmetrically, a difficult and lengthy process. Lavish use of glass throughout means the interior benefits from lots of natural light, stopping the wood from feeling too heavy.

ROCK.IT cockpit

A well-stocked bar with backlit white onyx proves the focal part of the room, from which the spaces divide out into individual lounging areas, each made distinct by their own soft cream carpet.

ROCK.IT feels voluminous, and while the high ceilings certainly aid this, so does the interior design, which allows for spaces to flow from one designated area to the next, creating capsule environments. Rather than having the feeling of a bridge deck salon, the room is separated into useful and efficient spaces, which makes it feel much larger.

Bars are a recurring theme on board, with each deck hosting a unique and ample-sized offering. On the main deck, the bar, complete with full-height wine chiller, is the first thing you see when you walk through the sliding doors.

Resplendent in backlit onyx and glossy mahogany and based in a circular ante-chamber, it separates the formal dining space, with a stunning table by Pollaro, and the outside entertaining space, immediately imparting the good-time vibe felt throughout ROCK.IT .

ROCK.IT saloon

In the centre is a table and chairs, made in-house by Feadship, and drawing the whole area together as a relaxed lounging space that accommodates all twelve guests. Aft of the central bar is a row of deckchairs and a large tender and two Yamaha Waverunners.

“We have some owners that want two or three tenders and lots of toys, but the owner of ROCK.IT is really about yachting and diving, so the guest tender we store up top and the rescue tender is in a big hatch forward of the bridge,” says Halbertsma.

Not having the tenders stored in the beach club gives a feeling of more space elsewhere on the yacht, especially in the guest and crew accommodation.

As a yard, Feadship is known for focusing its efforts on offering bespoke superyachts , where there is no ordinary and exceptional is the new normal. And exceptional is no hyperbole. Liautaud took the ability to create a custom superyacht and ran with it.

“During his many visits to the yard, we had terrific fun with this unconventional and no-compromise client,” says CEO Henk de Vries. “His between-your-eyes honesty and tremendous respect for and appreciation of Feadship craftsmanship pushed us to new heights.”

ROCK.IT is one of the quietest yachts Feadship has ever made, and also was the first to utilise an intuitive control and manoeuvring system, commonly used on navy ships. The system allows ROCK.IT to keep her heading at anchor by hovering on the main engine and thrusters.

“I was willing to accept this new system because it comes from a proven military background,” says ROCK.IT ’s build captain. “The manoeuvring system represents a real step towards the future. To make it happen took real vision and considerable skill.”

ROCK.IT owner's cabin

This allows all the guest cabins, consisting of two large doubles, a smaller double and a twin, to be large and well-appointed, keeping a democratic harmony and reinforcing the feel of the yacht as a family home away from home.

Unsurprisingly, however, the owner’s cabin is pretty spectacular. Full beam and located on the main deck, the suite is accessed via an opulent marble lobby, past the dramatic mahogany-panelled staircase which links the guest areas.

A private study opens out into the full-beam cabin, which is characterised by the same deep mahogany as seen throughout the rest of the yacht, and soft furnishings in creams and whites. Huge windows ensure the room is always full of light.

ROCK.IT bathroom

Forward are large his’n’hers bathrooms, gleaming with marble and backlit stone. The sink in Liautaud’s bathroom is crafted from a single block of black Portoro marble, weighing almost 500 kilograms.

His wife Leslie’s side boasts a large French-style free standing bath, a rarity on a superyacht, as well as a wealth of Staturio marble and an elegant vanity unit.

With so much effort put into creating such a homely space, it would be easy to expect the owners to never leave their suite, however this is far from the case. There is no favourite space on board: “You know what, I love them all,” says Liautaud.

“We spend least time on the main deck, we spend most of our time on the swim platform and the sundeck, and we live in the bridge deck.”

The bridge deck is a compromise between the formal main deck and the relaxed sundeck. An al fresco dining table aft can be sheltered from a breeze by sliding glass panels, and the large doors into the salon create an easy inside/outside entertaining space.

Further aft, two smaller tables surrounded by sofas move up and down to serve either as coffee tables or dining tables, and match the larger table to create a symbiosis between the areas.

ROCK.IT

“Sander Sinot and Leslie did all of the art on board,” says the owner. “A couple of friends and musicians gave us a couple of pieces. I did the hardscape and Leslie did all the soft and the colour. That’s our deal.” The art makes the rooms feel personal, and adds a vitality to the otherwise flawless walls.

“Each Feadship is totally unique and no two Feadship owners are the same,” says De Vries. “It is our privilege to create the most amazing yachts on the oceans for the most fascinating people on the planet, and it has been a great experience to partner with the owner of ROCK.IT .”

The experience is, of course, of an owner involving himself in every aspect of the creation of his yacht, which, although perhaps not always easy, is what allows it to come alive in such a palpable way.

my rock it yacht

This is perhaps what gives her such a tangible soul, the passion that went into creating something that would still excite so much after so many days spent aboard. ROCK.IT is an apt name for a yacht that makes an owner’s heart soar, like a rocket into outer space.

About ROCK.IT

ROCK.IT combines space-age looks with traditional comforts. Created for an experienced owner who chartered Feadships and appreciated the essence of the Feadship brand, the outstanding 60.35-metre motoryacht ROCK.IT has raised the bar of what can be achieved in an entirely bespoke project. Fast from the outside, cosy on the inside, ROCK.IT features the first-time application on a superyacht of an intuitive control and manoeuvring system developed for naval applications.

The yacht contains cutting edge technology, as in the installation of a unique control system that includes a semi-DP autopilot system. This will allow ROCK.IT to keep her heading at anchor, hovering on the main engine and the thrusters. Optimal use of the various manoeuvring modes is made by means of a three-axis steering joystick with a rotational factor.

Rock.It

Rock.It — the hip, modern Feadship yacht with a touch of class

From the outside superyacht  Rock.It looks hip and modern but, at the same time, classy and without any on-trend aggressive angularity. In car design vernacular, the 60.35 metre motor yacht is a little more McLaren 675, a little less Lamborghini Aventador.

The bow is sharply raked and moderately flared but its raised, bevelled bulwarks and absence of a teak cap rail speak to the 21st century. A curved fashion plate at the main deck and a single angle shared by superstructure and mast above support the illusion of power.

Portlights and windows are simple, effective squares and rectangles that, paired with polished stainless louvres and grilles, bring a nuance of industrial chic.

The interior is a different melody, played with the most traditional materials: bookmatched flame mahogany, steel and stone. Rather than a disconnect, it is a conversation about classic materials used in surprisingly modern ways.

The project began around the 40 metre mark but grew during development to incorporate not only plenty of space for entertaining but also to support a lot of culinary creativity with a large main deck galley.

The Feadship  and De Voogt / Sinot Exclusive Yacht Design pairing has occurred before on other contemporary Feadships such as Musashi and Fountainhead , coincidentally also built for American clients.

Sinot was founded back in the late 1990s, not in yacht décor but in industrial design and transportation, such as trains and airplanes. This interest in the machine and how things work and fit together is a hallmark of the company’s work just as much as its preference for clean lines and light woods, says the project’s lead designer, Zlatko Imamovic. And therein rose an interesting challenge.

The owners’ original brief, divulged Feadship, began with a reference to a yacht that looked “fast on the outside but cosy on the inside”. In the owners’ minds, “cosy” meant dark woods.

Rock. It’s  owners are Jimmy John and Leslie Liautaud from Illinois, him the founder of the well-known Jimmy John’s sandwich chain. With their three children, they enjoy water sports, entertaining, food and music, not necessarily in that order.

After owning several Sea Rays, the Liautauds became interested in  sport fishing  and bought a 26 metre  Merritt  sportfisher called  III Amigos .  Rock.It  is the family’s first large yacht, although they have chartered before, which is what, the owner says, led him to Feadship. “It’s the best of the best,” he says.

The exterior settled, Liautaud solicited proposals for the interior, including one from Sinot that interpreted “cosy” with various shades of walnut. While he liked the look, he told Sinot he would like it a lot better if it was mahogany with beamed overheads like one of his favourite restaurants in Chicago and several US-built yachts he had seen.

Sinot’s next proposal featured a combination of straight grain and flame mahogany, and lots of it, with fielded bookmatched panels as a nod to tradition, mixed with modern gloss joinery on the staircase and in the furniture, with a little marquetry to showcase craftsmanship and copious backlit onyx.

Henk de Vries, Feadship’s CEO, admits that the amount of flame mahogany in the design nearly scuttled the project because the builder and joinery company had such difficulty in finding enough timber sections of similar size and grain.

At first the specs called for all the mahogany to be finished in gloss lacquer. “I worried about that,” says De Vries. “I started to think that it might look too much like the interior of an expensive car.”

A matt finish, on the other hand, looked too vintage. “We stopped the work and made seven panels one metre square with seven different finishes, from flat matt to high gloss, for him to choose,” says De Vries. “He picked the one right in the middle.”

As well as a family boat, Rock.It is designed to entertain. She sports a total of three bars, one of which anchors the yacht’s prime entry point on the main deck.

“It was clear that the owners will typically greet their guests at the aft deck rather than at a starboard side foyer,” says Sander Sinot, “so it was important to create a space that says ‘welcome’ and does it with a wow factor.”

Stepping from the covered aft main deck dominated by a huge teak table, Rock.It changes her tune. A curved onyx bar glows via backlighting, casting a warm light on beautifully veined Portoro marble.

A mahogany ring frames a dome in the overhead, establishing the theme throughout the main and bridge decks. Floor-to-ceiling panels of flame mahogany alternate with tall wine display cabinets bordered in sycamore marquetry bands.

Sketching an interior that relies heavily on a single joinery pattern is one thing; finding enough veneer to make it work is quite another. Creating the flame look in each panel required four sheets of veneer that needed to be matched for the size of the pattern being achieved.

A “book” of veneers from a log has an average of 90 “pages”, of which at least half are unlikely to match as the relationship from limb to trunk changes. The semi-surrounding wall of the central staircase features 168 individual panels that match side to side and top to bottom through three decks.

Feadship’s joiners worked through 130 books of veneer on that element alone. Each panel is set into a grid of polished stainless bands pierced by tiny LED lights at the intersections. As the stair surround is obviously concave, Sinot conceived each of the mahogany stair panels as slightly convex to reflect light.

An art niche at bridge deck level displays a small Jeff Koons Balloon Dog sculpture, which acts as a metaphor for the entire yacht: modern art on a classic background.

In keeping with the owner’s young family, there is no formal dining room but that doesn’t mean that indoor dining has been ignored. The forward end of the expansive main deck saloon is anchored by a staggering Sinot-designed light fixture hanging over an equally stunning custom table by Pollaro Custom Furniture of Union, New Jersey, in macassar ebony and lighter veneers in a sunburst pattern.

There are 188 pieces in the table top alone, each one cut by hand, which took more than 350 man hours to complete. Edging the table is a faceted stainless steel band, which is finished with three small rolled bars, a detail suggested by the owner, who saw the mix of curves and facets on a Graff watch strap.

“The client loves polished stainless steel and I introduced it as a contrast element in numerous interior places,” says Sinot. At either side of the dining table, glass bulkheads slide open, leading to terraces folding out from the bulwarks. Interestingly, the terraces open manually but are so nicely balanced that it’s a one-person job.

In all there are 30 custom-made Pollaro pieces designed for Rock.It . “When we build for Feadship, we are inspired because they create perfection,” says Frank Pollaro.

“Our work is a significant investment. Usually owners come to the shop and choose their logs for the colour and grain that interests them.” Pollaro has the largest collection of wood in the world, including an inventory of 500 ebony logs.

Forward of the circular staircase on the main deck and the amidships lobby with its marble floor is the owners’ full 10.8 metre beam suite, which is all about relaxation and soft lighting created by lots of backlit onyx.

Their children and guests are accommodated in two twin cabins and the pair of VIPs. The doors of the cabins do not face each other, which enhances privacy. Light fabrics contrast with the mahogany joinery and all the beds appear as free standing, with ambient light escaping from underneath. The windows in all the lower cabins are the largest the classification society would allow on a lower deck.

Also on this level, the crew cabins are among the first to benefit from the MLC 2006 regulations that require a larger minimum cabin area as well as other amenities. The area is extremely well finished and the engineer has his own quarters aft of the control room.

Rock. It’s bridge deck lounge is in a different key. Here, the cross-grain sycamore that appears in such light notes on the main deck is allowed a riff and a few mahogany beams add percussion to an interesting overhead made of woven teak strips.

The lounge is full beam and a bar to port is the crew access point from the pantry. “This is the last space we designed for the client and it’s more of a chill-out space,” says Sinot. “It’s sunny and open, with lighter surfaces. On the aft deck the sliding glass on each side can make it more of an all-weather space for dining.”

As much of the art on board would suggest, Rock. It’s owners enjoy their rock and roll and the sundeck is the place it really shows. At party time, extra speakers are deployed on all aft decks.

A pair of stone-clad bars anchor the gathering space under the hardtop, while an awning deploys aft if shade is wanted; the canopy forward extends almost to the spa pool and sunpads. The overhead is broken by nine skylights of photo-reactive glass that self-darken in bright sunlight.

Rock.It is anything but a marina queen. Since delivery in December 2014 she has been almost continuously on the move – completing more than 17,000 nautical miles in the first nine months, according to captain Hendrik Jacobs, who joined the project as it neared completion.

Her owners’ first goal was to welcome in the New Year in Miami and, after two weeks in Fort Lauderdale, it was off to the Keys, Panama and through the canal to Costa Rica, Mexico and the Galápagos.

“Our itinerary has been fluid,” says Jacobs. “They like the boat so much they are likely to turn up almost any time.” And indeed they did arrive during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show , which is where we caught up with them as they were showing the yacht to friends.

Commenting on the yacht’s itinerary, Liautaud said: “Why not? The yacht is so beautiful I can’t think of a better place to be.” His wife added that it’s her perfect spot to de-stress.

In their first season, Cocos island and the coast of Costa Rica generally, where Rock.It was accompanied by III Amigos , were favourite haunts. The Pacific coast of Central America is well known for its billfishing. “Our first stop after transiting the canal was Piñas Bay and the Tropic Star Lodge, which is world famous among game fishermen,” says Jacobs.

Alternating between Tropic Star and nature parks such as Panama’s Coiba island and Cocos island, as well as Marina Papagayo and Los Sueños in Costa Rica, the owners, family and guests spent the spring fishing and exploring.

A trip to the Galápagos was the highlight of their Pacific adventure. With a full-time guide on board, Rock.It visited five of the islands.

The next chapter was to spend the summer in New England for whale watching and trips to historic seaports. This winter will be spent in the Caribbean and next summer in the Great Lakes, where Rock.It will no doubt dazzle the Chicago waterfront crowd. There’s no let-up in that itinerary yet.

Motor Yacht

The 60.35 metre superyacht ROCK.IT launched from the Feadship yard in 2014, bringing an effortless style to the water thanks to exterior design from Sinot Yacht Design and engineering and architecture from De Voogt Naval Architects. A new wave of contemporary style with traditional comforts, ROCK.IT was designed and built for an experienced owner who made the leap from chartering Feadships, to creating thier own custom superyacht.

Fast, sleek and modern styling gives way to a cosy and expertly designed interior, also by Sinot Yacht Design, which accommodates up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms.  Dark precious woods and light stones are blended in a fantastically detailed classic modern interior. Splendidly spacious thanks to the full-beam throughout, crotched mahogany and striking diagonally veneered sycamore panelling create a very personal touch. Backlit pure White Onyx in combination with the most exquisite Portoro and other marbles elevate the interior to a higher level without losing its main purpose of being a true family yacht. But ROCK.IT is also a party boat when the time is right.

One of the most striking features is the skylight in the sun deck canopy, which dims automatically depending on the strength of the sunlight. This allows for an open feel while optimising comfort levels. The bespoke superyacht project features an innovative control and maneuvering system developed for naval applications, never before seen on a yacht. This allows ROCK.IT to keep her heading at anchor, hovering on the main engine and the thrusters. Optimal use of the various manoeuvring modes is made by means of a three-axis steering joystick with a rotational factor.

Body of British businessman Mike Lynch recovered from deadly Italian yacht sinking

Yacht manufacturer's ceo says 'indescribable, unreasonable' errors led to deadly tragedy.

Rescue personnel move a blue body bag onto a red ship.

Social Sharing

The Italian Coast Guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called it unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, remains  unaccounted for.  The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-metre British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometre from shore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Sicily superyacht rescue: What divers are up against | About That

Divers have struggled to find the bodies.

"It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one metre can take up to 24 hours," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

  • CBC Explains How did the superyacht Bayesian sink? Experts say weather was just one factor
  • 5 bodies found by divers in Sicily yacht search, 1 person still unaccounted for

Hannah Lynch, the businessman's 18-year-old daughter, is among the boat occupants rescue teams were searching for this week, along with Judy and Jonathan Bloomer and Chris and Neda Morvillo.

Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to get to safety, while the body of the onboard chef, Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

Thomas was a native of Antigua but was raised in Calgary, according to Antiguan reports.

Questions about capsize remain

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her one-year-old baby over the waves to save her.

They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell. The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship's position as the storm rolled in.

"Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea," Borner said in a text message.

But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-metre-tall mast.

"If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea," he said.

Criminal investigation underway

Investigators from Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are "designed to be unsinkable."

"And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever," CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Several people are shown on what appears to be a dock, near a seacraft.

Costantino added that "obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water," suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require "a greater competence" to be guided compared with motor boats. In a separate interview with Reuters, he said a series of "indescribable, unreasonable errors" by the crew led to the shipwreck.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch, 59, is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

The Royal Academy of Engineering, where Lynch was a Fellow, said it was "deeply saddened" to learn of his death and that he played an "active role" as a mentor and donor.

Three boats are seen patrolling a large body of water.

Lynch founded Autonomy, a software maker, in 1996. He later founded Invoke Capital, a venture capital firm that was a founding investor of British cybersecurity company Darktrace, as well as Luminance, an artificial intelligence platform for the legal industry.

Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. But the deal quickly turned into an albatross for him after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale and then fired by HP.

Lynch testified this year while facing fraud charges at trial in California in connection with the HP deal. Although he avoided the possibility of a prison sentence with a subsequent acquittal, Lynch still faced a potentially costly civil case in London.

3 Eternal Yacht Rock Songs that Continue to Rock the Boat

Jacob Uitti

Yacht rock is one of those genres of music that you know when you hear it. It’s a combination of a lot of styles, from rock to jazz to blue-eyed soul to disco, but in the end what it constitutes is smooth music that gives you a jolt and a reason to start moving your feet. Even if those feet are in deck shoes planted firmly on a giant boat in the middle of the ocean.

Videos by American Songwriter

Here below, we wanted to, ahem, dive into three songs from the genre that still get the boat a-rocking. A trio of tracks that boast the appeal of the genre as well as legitimate staying power. Indeed, these are three eternal yacht rock songs that continue to inspire the boatside dance moves.

[RELATED: Yacht Rock Essentials: “Time Passages,” the Smash Hit Al Stewart Wrote and Performed but Never Much Liked]

“Sailing” by Christopher Cross from Christopher Cross (1979)

Believed by many to be the quintessential yacht rock song, this track, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, has it all: a sharp-yet-mellow singing voice, drifting musical melodies, and a poignant delivery. Couple that with the title and this song becomes the top track to put on your yacht rock playlists. It’s like melding into an ocean breeze and finding yourself traveling from shore to island and back again. Not only was this track a success on the charts but it won Cross Grammys for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year. He also garnered the Best New Artist award, too. On the floating single, he sings,

Well, it’s not far down to paradise At least it’s not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away And find tranquility Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, believe me

It’s not far to never never land No reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy Of innocence again Oh, the canvas can do miracles Just you wait and see, believe me

“Africa” by Toto from Toto IV (1982)

If we’re talking yacht rock, why not offer a song that gives listeners a far-off destination to think of. And for those listening in the Western world, the continent of Africa is just that. This track from Toto is one of those that music listeners love to sing along to, especially when it comes to the chorus. Its synthesizers and vocal harmonies are catnip to yacht rock fans—and, really, music fans of any kind. On the compelling track, David Paich sings,

I hear the drums echoing tonight But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation She’s coming in, 12:30 flight The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation

I stopped an old man along the way Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies He turned to me as if to say, “Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you”

“Kiss on My List” by Hall & Oates from Voices (1980)

When it comes to blending rock with disco and soul, perhaps no group did it better than Hall & Oates and this track is one of the prime examples of that. A toe-tapper and easy-listener, this song is driven by pianos and percussion but is accentuated by Daryl Hall’s bright, soaring voice. If you’re ever on a boat and in charge of the music, if you put this song on the playlist, just sit back and watch your fellow travelers begin to sing and get down with big smiles on their faces as this tune plays. It’s the perfect balance of pop stickiness and yacht rock flavor. On the track, Hall sings,

(Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list Because your kiss is on my list of the best things in life (Because your kiss) your kiss is on my list (Because your kiss) your kiss I can’t resist (Because your kiss) is what I miss when I turn out the lights

I go crazy wondering what there is to really see Did the night just take up your time, ’cause it means more to me Sometimes I forget what I’m doing I don’t forget what I want, what I want Regret what I’ve done, regret you, I couldn’t go on

Rocky Road: Who is responsible when rocks, debris from a dump truck damage your vehicle?

Signs seen on the back of many trucks offer trucking companies no legal protection.

ATLANTA, Ga. (InvestigateTV) - Driving behind a dump truck feels like a game of roulette. Rocks could fall out, damaging your windshield or causing a crash.

You’ve probably noticed those stickers warning you to stay back and that the trucks aren’t responsible for broken windshields. But did you notice something missing?

How about license plates?

In Georgia and most other states, dump trucks aren’t required to have license plates or any other identifying marks on the back of the vehicle.

In place since 1965, Georgia’s regulation says, “trucks and trailers which routinely engage in activities wherein it is inevitable that a motor vehicle license plate attached to the rear thereof would be defaced, destroyed or lost, shall display the motor vehicle license plate assigned to it by attaching it to the front of the vehicle.”

So, ironically, the reason you can’t identify the truck that damaged your windshield is because the same kind of rocks and debris could damage their license plate.

“It’s very interesting they have no problem keeping those stickers on the back that say not responsible for objects coming from the road, stay a hundred feet back or whatever,” said Andrew Lampros , an Atlanta plaintiff’s attorney. “But they can’t seem to keep any identifying information on the trucks.”

Lampros himself has had to pay for three windshields in the last three years, all from damages from dump trucks.

“One in Tennessee, two in Georgia,” Lampros said. “I couldn’t catch up to them because of traffic and it wasn’t safe. But there was no license plate on the back of the truck.”

[  More from InvestigateTV: Electric cars prompt law enforcement to update traditional cruisers Opens in new window  ]

‘Not responsible for broken windshields’

The stickers and signs on the back of dump trucks offer no legal protection, according to attorneys.

“They say they’re not responsible for objects coming from the road,” Lampros said. “That’s true. Nobody is, but they are responsible for objects coming from their trucks if they fail to secure their load properly.”

The problem is proving the rock came from the truck and not the road.

After three windshields, Lampros bought a dash camera.

Jamie Hurley wishes he had a dash cam when a rock hit his windshield in Forsyth County last November. “The rock came through, hit dead center of the windshield and sounded like a gunshot,” Hurley said.

The driver of the county dump truck immediately stopped and called police. But because Hurley had only his word that the rock came from the truck, he had to pay $2,700 to replace the high-tech windshield himself.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office body camera recording, the deputy told the truck driver, “This isn’t really an accident, so we don’t really decide whose fault it is. We’re just going to document that he said a rock came out of your truck, and you said you’re hauling asphalt.”

[  More from InvestigateTV: Consumers raise concerns about data collection practices of automakers Opens in new window  ]

Tarps required in Georgia and 38 other states

Only 11 states don’t require tarps or coverings for dump trucks . Georgia is one of the 39 states that do, but our investigators spotted several trucks with loose tarps barely covering the loads.

“The minimum standard of what looked like a loincloth on these trucks was enough to meet the minimum standard,” Hurley said. “It just fell back on me.”

Lampros said windshield claims rarely succeed. “The burden of proof is on the person who is asserting the claim against the company or the truck,” he said. “And I have to prove it was them who did it, that the rock came out of the truck and not off the road. And it was due to their negligence. They had not properly secured the load. So they have several easy defenses.”

Windshields are the number one auto insurance claim in the nation. More than 7.5 million claims are filed for auto glass every year , according to the Insurance Journal. Eighty percent of those are for windshields.

The American Automobile Association reported 200,000 crashes from road debris over a four-year period. More than a hundred people are killed in such crashes every year.

‘dustborn’ review: a political adventure rewarding patient, open minds.

'Dustborn' needs patience and an open mind, but if you don't have either, what's the point in trying ... [+] a new game?

Dustborn is among the most unrepentantly liberal and left-leaning games out there. If you’ve spent 20 seconds glancing at YouTube comments or social media, you’ll probably already know this–hundreds of people disavowed it without even playing it. Such is 2024, and once again, it’s a shame–there’s a lot to like in this odd escapade.

On a fundamental level, Dustborn has refined and nearly perfected the classic Telltale Games episodic graphic adventure formula , admittedly ten years after it was at the height of its popularity. It takes time to build momentum, but once you get to grips with everything offered by this cross-country, near-post-apocalyptic tale, you’re in it for the long run.

However, even if you fall within its clear target audience, Dustborn ’s jarring start, odd mechanics, and weird characters raise some strong early opinions, and it has a few missteps along the way. On a fundamental level, developer Red Thread Games has created something that’s an exercise in patience–not just to get into it, but to enjoy the experience as intended.

Road trippin’ with your three favorite allies

Dustborn kicks things off in medias res, as you, Pax–a 30-something con artist and mutant lite “Anomal” with the ability to weaponize language–nurse a gunshot wound after a semi-successful heist. You’ve secured an important USB drive in the 2030 nation-state of Pacifica–this universe’s California–and you must get it to Nova Scotia.

Apple iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Release Date Claimed In Controversial New Report

Today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for thursday, august 22, bayesian yacht: bodies of entrepreneur michael lynch and morgan stanley chief recovered in italy.

Things are different here; it’s implied the timeline diverges from ours at Deeley Plaza in 1963, when Jackie O, rather than JFK, was assassinated. Kennedy takes Marilyn Monroe as a second wife, and together they turn it into a semi-fascist state filled with law-enforcing robots, tearing the union apart along the way, giving rise to supercharged versions of modern-day sub-cultures and groups. Neat!

It's almost like a U.S. politician has developed a cult of personality

As Pax–one of four initial misfits–you can use your vocal talents to make people feel terrible about themselves (“it’s like negging but more brutal”). Noam, your former lover, gaslights people to make them feel better (a “verbal tranquilizer”). Sai, the artistic, self-critical, and overtly sweary team brute can make literally make herself as strong as a rock. Then there’s Theo, a normal dude with no powers, but a thoroughly nice chap and potential dad of the group. Together, you cross a divided former U.S. masquerading as a punk rock band, combining chat, rhythm-action music sections, and a few fights.

From the first moments you ride along the highway, Dustborn is immaculately presented. Cameras are fluid but settle into cleverly curated fixed positions, allowing you to direct your evolving conversations through excellent, regularly adapting angles, like any classic single-camera sitcom setup. It’s just as well– Dustborn revels in chat, whether you want to or not.

Camera angles are perfectly prepared; they're a Dustborn KSP all of their own.

Finding your voice

Early conversations feel basic at best–good and bad decision-making is too binary, meaning you’re either calm and collected, or a dick. However, stick with it: this is Dustborn ’s slightly heavy-handed tutorial explanation of chat mechanics and your own abilities. You can time your conversations, choose safe answers, or run roughshod over your friends with your angry vox ability whenever you like–not that you will, because it’ll make you feel awful.

However, conversational dynamics unfurl at a dramatic pace as you work through the first two chapters, and begin to trust your judgment. Some chats add or remove response options with time; elsewhere, things are best left unsaid, even as Dustborn appears to imply you should talk. Skipping dialogue isn’t an option, either, but it makes you appreciate that this is meant to be all about words rather than actions. Sure, some sections can drag, but you feel compelled to get the most out of every conversation you can, even if your approach ends up making things worse.

Your choices influence your compatriots to fall into one of three dominant traits, which you can keep track of–important if you want to know how best to approach them ahead of another big discussion. It’s not clear if or what you want these to be, but you get a feel for the traits you like as the chapters develop.

Theo felt mostly like my buddy, but you can understand those who might want him as their boss. Or ... [+] daddy.

Interactions are surprisingly delicate and carefully arranged, backed with absolutely superb voice acting–Dominique Tipper and Safiyya Ingar as Pax and Sai, respectively, are standouts–but the cast is occasionally let down by dodgy dialogue. You might immediately want to take it out on the characters being unlikeable in different ways, though that’s kind of the point, as they have their imperfections, but it occasionally feels like Dustborn doesn’t fully trust your intelligence.

Slapped with a brick

If you’ve got underlying messages you want to convey, you must trust in subtlety–it goes a long way–and this is especially true for Dustborn . It rightly wears its heart on its sleeve, but still has a habit of mishandling strong allegories by spelling them out for you, to the point you can feel a little patronized. Given its obvious audience, it’s far from ideal.

Early in the game, after you recover the potentially world-changing, Tamagotchi-like “Me-em” that becomes one of a few core tools in the game, you begin to encounter Echoes. These disembodied, angry voices spew bile about conspiracy theories, mutilation, fears of atypical people, and more. Echoes invisibly hang in the landscape but can be heard by people, influencing their behavior or can even take over their minds to the point of inflicting mental illness. It’s a spectacular visual metaphor for social media, and this is communicated with the perfect level of nuance.

That is, until you explain this phenomenon to Sai, who almost shrugs at the notion and immediately says “ah, like social media!” Great, thanks, satisfaction ruined there. When you suck the Echoes into your Me-em–in a move like the Proton Pack from Ghostbusters –you’re reminded that “it’s like ghostbusting!” OK, we get it, you need to be certain we’ve made that connection. This happens more often than you’d hope, and each time, the happiness you glean from interpreting things independently is flushed out to the tune of The Price is Right ’s losing horn .

Changing it up

For all the highs and lows of its conversation-heavy core experience, Dustborn nicely mixes things up with other elements that add a bit of spice, and contribute to refining the episodic adventure format that needs more to carry itself through the 2020s.

It takes a bit of getting used to being a fake band.

Firstly, the rhythm-action sections, which involve your band pretending to be musicians, is a nice touch and nicely responsive–though the oddly-placed and angled crosshair and super move inputs make it initially hard to follow. It helps that the original soundtrack is solid, and the songs are consistently worked into the wider story, giving more exposition along the way.

At the end of the first chapter, combat is introduced, arming Pax with a baseball bat as she takes on a bunch of Horned Riders, introducing a whole Borderlands gang element to proceedings. It’s not perfect–my first two fighting segments glitched significantly–but these sections incorporate easy-to-understand dodge and attack mechanics with upgrades, voice abilities, team play, timing, and further storytelling after each bout. Don’t like it? After your first skirmish, you can choose if you want more or less combat for the rest of the game, which is a great touch.

The fighting sections might not be to everyone's tastes, but they're pretty fun.

There’s also a gamification of conversations through collected items. You regularly come across team-friendly trinkets when you’re exploring, but you can’t just make someone happy again by gifting it to them–it’s all about the right time and place. If you hit the sweet spot by handing something over at the right time with Sai, Theo, or Noam, you unlock new dialog and backstory. It makes you appreciate the craft behind the dialogue even more; you might feel condescension in certain parts of the storytelling, but you feel thoroughly rewarded when you get this right.

Wait and see

Dustborn gets better, and feels more rewarding, as you play it. Its dodgy opening chapters will return double what you put into it, with a nicely evolving story and character development–even if so much lore and exposition is left on the table. Maybe Dustborn 2 will help us understand this weird, warring vision of the U.S. in 2030 (unless real life does it first, *massive hopeful satire klaxon*).

If you have an open mind and you’re willing to give it time to grow, Dustborn is a fun trip, even if it occasionally feels like it’s trying to be a bit too edgy for its own good–especially for the type of people who will immediately click with its socio-political outlook. Of course I know them–they’re me .

It’s not trying to be The Walking Dead: A Telltale Series or Um Jammer Lammy or Devil May Cry or Oxenfree ; Dustborn really is its own thing, and the fact Quantic Dream is giving indie developers like Red Thread Games this platform to be exactly what it wants to be is absolutely fantastic. Those who refuse to play it on principle don’t know what they’re missing. Dustborn might need patience and an open mind, but if you don’t have either, what’s the point in trying something new?

‘devastated’ mentor spoke with nyc jeweler missing in sunken bayesian yacht days before tragedy: ‘it doesn’t look good’.

The “devastated” mentor of the luxury Manhattan jeweler who vanished when the Bayesian yacht sank off Sicily spoke with her protége days before the tragedy — and admitted she has little hope that the missing passengers will be found alive.

In an exclusive interview with The Post, goldsmith Cecelia Bauer recalled inviting Neda Morvillo to a luncheon with fellow jewelers on Monday, the same day the superyacht capsized off the coast of Palermo.

Jewelry designer Neda Morvillo and her husband, Christopher Morvillo, are missing after after superyacht sank off Sicilian coast.

Morvillo, who has a fine jewelry business in Midtown, and her lawyer husband Christopher Morvillo are among the six people who went missing during the tragedy.

But officials are holding out hope they may be trapped in the ship alive, surviving on air pockets 160 feet below the surface.

“I’m totally shocked,” Bauer said upon learning her former student and Morvillo’s husband were aboard the doomed yacht.

“I’m devastated because I can’t believe she’s one of the missing. It doesn’t look good … I would find it hard to believe that anyone has survived this long.”

Divers operate in the sea to search for missing people after a luxury yacht sank near Sicily, Italy on August 19, 2024.

Bauer told The Post she trained the missing jeweler approximately 20 years ago.

A website for Morvillo — who goes professionally as Neda Nassiri — credits Bauer as her mentor.

“She was a student of mine,” Bauer said. “She came to my studio and she studied with me for many, many years, and she was able to go out on her own, and get her own studio and a place to work.

“She became a very close friend. She’s very dear to me. And this news is just absolutely devastating.”

Morvillo declined Bauer’s lunch invitation over the weekend but didn’t offer a reason why.

“She said that she wasn’t going to be able to come,” Bauer explained, adding that she had “no idea” Morvillo had been sailing the Mediterranean Sea on a superyacht.

Bauer described Morvillo as “very upbeat, very happy,” and “incredibly smart.”

“She was glad to help anybody out that she could,” Bauer said. “She was extremely generous…She was very special.”

Bauer explained that she met Christopher Morvillo only on several occasions, but recognized him as a “really nice fella” who was “very well connected.”

Christopher Morvillo was the couple’s ticket onto the yacht as they were celebrating British tech tycoon Mike Lynch ‘s win in his longstanding fraud trial earlier this summer.

Mike Lynch, former chief executive officer of Autonomy Corp departs the Rolls Building on June 27, 2019 in London, England.

Lynch, the owner of the yacht, and his 18-year-old daughter are also lost at sea.

“It’s all just pretty horrible,” Bauer added. “I don’t even know what to say, it’s so terrible. I can’t imagine what her family [is going through],” the grieving goldsmith said.

Neda and her husband have two daughters, Sabrina and Sophie, who were due to fly out to Italy and spend time on the luxury boat before it sank.

“He was so excited about the trip,” fellow attorney  David Oscar Markus wrote in a blog post after discovering the couple was missing.

“He couldn’t wait for his daughters to meet up with him and his wife. I am so thankful the girls had not yet arrived when this tragedy struck.”

Christopher Morvillo’s mother has holed up in her Long Island home eagerly awaiting developments, according to neighbors.

“Cathy is distraught, she is holding out hope they are still alive,” a neighbor told DailyMail.com Tuesday.

“It’s heartbreaking. We are waiting with bated breath,’ the person said. ‘It’s a wonderful family and we are all grieving along with them. His mother still has hope that there’s some chance her son and daughter-in-law are alive.”

A rapid inflatable emergency lifeboat in Porticello Harbour on the Sicilian coast where the search continues for British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah, who are among six tourists missing after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Italian divers were exploring the sunken Bayesian late Tuesday after using jacks to smash the 1¹/₄-inch-thick glass, according to local reports.

They reached the common areas of the 184-foot luxury vessel, but have not yet made it to the cabins — where one expert theorized the missing passengers might be trapped, but alive.

The search and rescue mission could take hours. Because of the depth, divers can only stay underwater for 12 minutes at a time.

The Bayesian capsized with 22 people — 10 crew members and 12 passengers — after it was suddenly struck by a freak storm around sunrise Monday morning, officials said.

Fifteen people managed to escape before the superyacht went down.

The ship’s Canadian-born chef Thomas Recaldo marks the only confirmed death in the tragedy.

In addition to the Morvillos and Lynch and his daughter, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer ad his wife, Judy, are still unaccounted for.

The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called it unsinkable.

The bodies of Lynch and four others were recovered by rescue crews. One woman remains missing.

The Bayesian, a 184-foot British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about half a mile offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her.

Lynch had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.

Body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered from yacht wreckage, officials say

Italy Boaters Missing Italian firefighter divers bring ashore in a plastic bag the body of one of the victims of a shipwreck, in Porticello, Sicily, southern Italy, Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. PORTICELLO, Sicily — (AP) — The Italian coast guard said Thursday the body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch is among those recovered off the coast of Sicily from the wreckage of a superyacht whose builders had called unsinkable.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for . The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday's tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout , and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian's manufacturer, told the AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are “designed to be unsinkable."

“And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever,” CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that “obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,” suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require “a greater competence” to be guided compared with motor boats.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed . Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat's captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

The body of chef Recaldo Thomas was the first to be recovered , on Monday. His death was confirmed by his family.

Friends of Thomas, best known as "Rick," paid tribute to him on Thursday at a favorite bar in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of Thomas' last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told the AP.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht's hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we'll be able to find the next body," said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It's very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.
