Yacht NORD – Elite $500M Superyacht

Owned by Russian billionaire businessman, yacht NORD is the tenth biggest yacht in the world.

The interior of the NORD yacht was developed by Nuvolari Lenard, an Italian yacht designer who also worked on the exterior of the impressive vessel.

Twenty-four guests can be accommodated in twelve luxurious cabins, including a spacious owner’s suite. There is additional space below the deck for up to 40 crew members.

Although exact details of the interior of NORD remain private and unknown to the public, the yacht is said to have two elevators, a large gym, a sauna, a beauty salon, and a cinema.

Lenard and his design studio are known for their upscale and aesthetically pleasing layouts, which are usually kept in earth tones and natural colors.

The Italian designer also worked on Mordashov’s smaller yacht, the LADY M, where he designed both the interior and exterior.

NORD specifications

The NORD yacht has a total length of 142 meters (465.1 ft). Her beam is 19.5 meters (64 ft) long, and her draft measures 5.4 meters (17.9).

The massive yacht weighs 9,259 tons. Her four MTU engines allow her to reach top speeds of 25 knots, although her average cruising speed lies closer to 20 knots.

The exterior of the NORD yacht was designed by Nuvolari Lenard and his experienced Italian design studio which is considered one of the most exclusive in the world.

The yacht is white with dark blue elements on the top decks, creating a streamlined effect and making the vessel appear even more elegant.

She has two separate helipads, one of which even has a collapsible helicopter hangar that can store smaller aircraft.

On the aft of the yacht, there is a sizeable swimming pool and beach club. NORD has a high-quality steel hull and impressive aluminum superstructure. 

The owner purchased NORD for a price of US $500 million in 2021. The yacht is estimated to incur running costs of US $40 to 50 million annually.

Lürssen has remained a family-run German shipyard since its inception in 1875 and is now in its fourth generation of private ownership. The company was founded by Friedrich Lürssen with a desire to create a leading shipyard in both quality and performance.

EXCLUSIVE: 142m Lurssen superyacht NORD, formerly 'Project Opus', delivered

Lurssen’s 142m/466ft motor yacht NORD , formerly known as Project Opus, has successfully been delivered to her owner. She set off from the German yard this morning on her maiden voyage to Gibraltar. 

Initially known as 'Project Redwood' and then 'Project Opus', megayacht NORD was constructed at the Lurssen  Bremen shipyard and boasts no less than 20 cabins for up to 36 guests.

Officially launched in July 2020, NORD spans over six decks and is one of the largest motor yachts delivered in 2021.

First announced in December 2015, the name NORD was exclusively revealed by YachtCharterFleet and was initially proposed to be a 139m Project. She has since been extended by an additional three metres, allowing for extra amenities onboard.

Sporting immaculate design from Italian studio Nuvolari & Lenard, who previously collaborated with Lurssen on the award-winning 88m/289ft  superyacht QUATTROELLE , the yacht's profile is particularly striking.

One of the most iconic components of her exterior is the subtle nod to the automobile industry; NORD is the first yacht to have her nameplate on the bow, much like a car grill.

NORD showcases her capacious volume of 9,250GT by providing extensive relaxation and lounging areas, as well as indulgent social environments for unforgettable parties.

Featuring a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks, NORD has been built in compliance to Lloyds Register PYC classification society rules.

First seen on the move in October 2018, before becoming Project Opus in 2019, she joins the Top 10 of the World's longest yachts alongside 180m (592.7ft) superyacht AZZAM and 156m (511.8ft) DILBAR . 

Indicating several unique features onboard the latest Lurssen megayacht, dual helipads, on-deck swimming pools and Jacuzzis are just some key features listed for NORD.

A spacious sports and diving centre accompany storage for tenders up to 15m, and a custom hangar slides in to place within the superstructure when not in use. 

It is currently unknown whether NORD is to be available for  superyacht charters .

142m superyacht Nord returns to Lürssen

The 142.6 metre Lürssen superyacht Nord has returned to its home yard in Germany. The yacht was capturing arriving at Lürssen on June 4 by yacht spotters. It comes after the yacht was delivered in February and spent the following months exploring the Spanish coast and Caribbean.  

The yacht, which was previously known as Opus and Project Redwood, is spread across six decks and was designed by Italian design studio Nuvolari Lenard.

Speaking about the project, studio co-founder Dan Lenard previously said the aim of the design was to invoke "strong emotions in every observer". 

“Whether you like the design or not, it must strike you. Nord is a serious ship first and foremost, but she also transcends the traditional language of yacht design. She is a warship wearing a tuxedo, an explorer with the elegance of a gentleman's yacht. We have entered a new direction in serious yacht design."

Managing partner of the shipyard Peter Lürssen added: "At Lürssen, we believe that to build a yacht it is vital to work as a team, and to execute such a comprehensive project, an excellent team is necessary.

"In this case, the team consisted of the design team from Nuvolari-Lenard, Moran Yacht & Ship who supervised the build on behalf of the owner, and, of course, the project team from Lürssen. We are looking forward to Nord finding her place amongst her peers as a remarkable statement in large yacht construction, based on a strong design and expert engineering skills."

Nord boasts a number of high-end features, such as a sports and diving centre on the lower deck, a large swimming pool, two  superyacht helipads  and a fleet of tenders measuring up to 15 metres.

Nuvolari Lenard also penned the interior design, which features accommodation for 36 guests in 20 staterooms.

In a statement, the studio previously said that Nord "will have efficient, long-range cruising capabilities for independent global exploration."

This is not the first time German shipyard Lürssen has collaborated with Nuvolari Lenard and Moran Yacht & Ship. 88 metre  Quattroelle  was delivered by the same partnership in 2013 and the yacht was a finalist at the 2014  World Superyacht Awards .

A Drunken Evening, a Rented Yacht: The Real Story of the Nord Stream Pipeline Sabotage

It was the kind of outlandish scheme that might bubble up in a bar around closing time.

In May of 2022, a handful of senior Ukrainian military officers and businessmen had gathered to toast their country’s remarkable success in halting the Russian invasion. Buoyed by alcohol and patriotic fervor, somebody suggested a radical next step: destroying Nord Stream.

After all, the twin natural-gas pipelines that carried Russian gas to Europe were providing billions to the Kremlin war machine. What better way to make Vladimir Putin pay for his aggression?

Just over four months later, in the small hours of Sept. 26, Scandinavian seismologists picked up signals indicating an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption hundreds of miles away, near the Danish island of Bornholm. They were caused by three powerful explosions and the largest-ever recorded release of natural gas, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of Denmark.

One of the most audacious acts of sabotage in modern history, the operation worsened an energy crisis in Europe—an assault on critical infrastructure that could be considered an act of war under international law. Theories swirled about who was responsible. Was it the CIA? Could Putin himself have set the plan in motion?

Now, for the first time, the outlines of the real story can be told. The Ukrainian operation cost around $300,000, according to people who participated in it. It involved a small rented yacht with a six-member crew, including trained civilian divers. One was a woman, whose presence helped create the illusion they were a group of friends on a pleasure cruise.

“I always laugh when I read media speculation about some huge operation involving secret services, submarines, drones and satellites,” one officer who was involved in the plot said. “The whole thing was born out of a night of heavy boozing and the iron determination of a handful of people who had the guts to risk their lives for their country.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially approved the plan, according to one officer who participated and three people familiar with it. But later, when the CIA learned of it and asked the Ukrainian president to pull the plug, he ordered a halt, those people said.

Zelensky’s commander in chief, Valeriy Zaluzhniy, who was leading the effort, nonetheless forged ahead.

The Journal spoke to four senior Ukrainian defense and security officials who either participated in or had direct knowledge of the plot. All of them said the pipelines were a legitimate target in Ukraine’s war of defense against Russia.

Portions of their account were corroborated by a nearly two-year German police investigation into the attack, which has obtained evidence including email, mobile and satellite phones communications, as well as fingerprints and DNA samples from the alleged sabotage team. The Germany inquiry hasn’t directly linked President Zelensky to the clandestine operation.

Gen. Zaluzhniy, now Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, said in a text exchange that he knows nothing of any such operation and that any suggestion to the contrary is a “mere provocation.” Ukraine’s armed forces, he added, weren’t authorized to conduct overseas missions, and he therefore wouldn’t have been involved.

A senior official of the main Ukrainian intelligence service, SBU, denied his government had anything to do with the sabotage, and said that Zelensky in particular “did not approve the implementation of any such actions on the territory of third countries and did not issue relevant orders.”

Putin has publicly blamed the U.S. for the attacks. A senior Russian diplomat in Berlin echoed that claim, and said the German investigation findings were “fairy tales worthy of the Brothers Grimm.”

In June, Germany’s federal prosecutor quietly issued the first arrest warrant in the case for a Ukrainian professional diving instructor for his alleged involvement in the sabotage. The German investigation is now focusing on Zaluzhniy and his aides, people familiar with the probe say, although they have no evidence that could be presented in court.

The findings could upend relations between Kyiv and Berlin, which has provided much of the financing and military equipment to Ukraine, second only to the U.S. Some German political leaders may have been willing to overlook evidence pointing to Ukraine for fear of undermining domestic support for the war effort. But German police are politically independent and their investigation took on a life of its own as they pursued one lead after another.

“An attack of this scale is a sufficient reason to trigger the collective defense clause of NATO, but our critical infrastructure was blown up by a country that we support with massive weapons shipments and billions in cash,” said a senior German official familiar with the probe.

Following the May 2022 pact between the businessmen and the military officers, it was agreed that the former would finance and help execute the project, because the army had no funds and was increasingly relying on foreign financing as it pushed back against the onslaught of its gargantuan neighbor. A sitting general with experience in special operations would oversee the mission, which one participant described as a “public-private partnership.” He would report directly to the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, the four-star Gen. Zaluzhniy.

Within days, Zelensky approved the plan, according to the four people familiar with the plot. All arrangements were made verbally, leaving no paper trail.

But the next month, the Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD learned of the plot and warned the CIA, according to several people familiar with the Dutch report. U.S. officials then promptly informed Germany, according to U.S. and German officials.

The CIA warned Zelensky’s office to stop the operation, U.S. officials said. The Ukrainian president then ordered Zalyzhniy to halt it, according to Ukrainian officers and officials familiar with the conversation as well as Western intelligence officials. But the general ignored the order, and his team modified the original plan, these people said.

The general tasked with commanding the operation enlisted some of Ukraine’s top special-operations officers with experience in orchestrating high-risk clandestine missions against Russia to help coordinate the attack.

One of them was Roman Chervinsky, a decorated colonel who previously served in Ukraine’s main security and intelligence service, the SBU.

Chervinsky is currently on trial in Ukraine for unrelated charges. In July, he was released on bail after over a year in detention. Reached after his release, he declined to comment on the Nord Stream case, saying he wasn’t authorized to speak about it.

In a subsequent broadcast interview, he said that the sabotage had two positive effects for Ukraine: It helped loosen Russia’s grip on the European countries supporting Kyiv, and it left Moscow with only one main avenue for channeling gas to Europe, pipelines traversing Ukraine. Despite the war, Ukraine collects lucrative transit fees for Russian oil and gas estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Chervinsky and the sabotage team initially studied an older, elaborate plan to blow up the pipeline drafted by Ukrainian intelligence and Western experts after Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, according to people familiar with the plot.

After dismissing that idea due its cost and complexity, the planners settled on using a small sailing boat and a team of six—a mix of seasoned active duty soldiers and civilians with maritime expertise—to blow up the 700-mile-long pipelines that sat more than 260 feet below the sea’s surface.

In September 2022, the plotters rented a 50-foot leisure yacht called Andromeda in Germany’s Baltic port town of Rostock. The boat was leased with the help of a Polish travel agency that was set up by Ukrainian intelligence as a cover for financial transactions nearly a decade ago, according to Ukrainian officers and people familiar with the German investigation.

One crew member, a military officer on active duty who was fighting in the war, was a seasoned skipper, and four were experienced deep-sea divers, people familiar with the German investigation said. The crew included civilians, one of whom was a woman in her 30s who had trained privately as a diver. She was handpicked for her skills but also to lend more plausibility to the crew’s disguise as friends on holiday, according to one person familiar with the planning.

The skipper took a short leave from his unit, which had been fighting on the front in the southeast of Ukraine, and his commander was kept in the dark, according to two Ukrainians familiar with the plot.

Ukraine has a long history of training top civilian and military divers. A naval base on the Crimean Peninsula in the past trained deep-sea divers for the purposes of sabotage and demining. It also kept combat dolphins trained to attack enemy divers and blow up ships, according to two senior Ukrainian officers. The base was taken over by Russia after it occupied Crimea, and some of its staff moved elsewhere in Ukraine.

Armed only with diving equipment, satellite navigation, a portable sonar and open-source maps of the seabed charting the position of the pipelines, the crew set out. The four divers worked in pairs, according to people familiar with the German investigation. Operating in pitch-dark, icy waters, they handled a powerful explosive known as HMX that was wired to timer-controlled detonators. A small amount of the light explosive would be sufficient to rip open the high-pressure pipes.

Spending 20 minutes at that depth requires around three hours of decompression, and the person must then refrain from diving for at least 24 hours or risk serious injury.

Inclement weather forced the crew to make an unplanned stop in the Swedish port of Sandhamn. One diver accidentally dropped an explosive device to the bottom of the sea. The crew briefly discussed whether to abort the operation due to the bad weather but the storm soon subsided, two people familiar with the operation said.

Witnesses on other yachts moored in Sandhamn noted that the Andromeda was the only boat with a small Ukrainian flag hoisted on its mast.

In the wake of the attack, which took out three of the four conduits forming the pipelines, energy prices surged. Germany and other nations scrambled to nationalize energy companies that handled Russian gas but collapsed after the pipelines were destroyed. Even today Germany is paying around $1 million a day alone to lease floating terminals for liquefied natural gas or LNG, which only partly replaced the Russian gas flows channeled by Nord Stream.

Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the U.S., among others, sent out warships, divers, underwater drones and aircraft to investigate the area around the gas leaks.

Zelensky took Zaluzhniy to task, but the general shrugged off his criticism, according to three people familiar with the exchange. Zaluzhniy told Zelensky that the sabotage team, once dispatched, went incommunicado and couldn’t be called off because any contact with them could compromise the operation.

“He was told it’s like a torpedo—once you fire it at the enemy, you can’t pull it back again, it just keeps going until it goes ‘boom,’ ” a senior officer familiar with the conversation said.

Days after the attack, in October 2022, Germany’s foreign secret service received a second tipoff about the Ukrainian plot from the CIA, which again passed on a report by the Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD. It offered a detailed account of the attack, including the type of boat used and the possible route taken by the crew, according to German and Dutch officials.

The Netherlands built deep intelligence-gathering capacity in Ukraine and Russia after Russian-backed paramilitaries downed a Malaysia Airlines flight originating from Amsterdam over eastern Ukraine, two Dutch officials said.

Due to rules governing the sharing of classified intelligence, German police investigating the case weren’t allowed to see the Dutch report that linked Zaluzhniy and the Ukrainian military to the attack, but they were made aware of it by intelligence officials.

German investigators questioned dozens of potential witnesses, scanned the bottom of the sea around the blasts and sifted through masses of data including digital communication, travel records and financial transactions.

They had one lucky break. In rushing to leave Germany, the sabotage crew neglected to wash the Andromeda, allowing German detectives to find traces of explosives, fingerprints and DNA samples of the crew.

Investigators later identified their mobile phone numbers and their Iridium satellite phone. That data allowed them to reconstruct the entire journey of the boat, which moored in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Poland. U.S. authorities sought a court order to obtain from Google the emails a Ukrainian businessman used to lease the boat, and handed them over to the Germans. That Ukrainian businessman had contacted a number of boat rental firms in Sweden as well as in Germany, starting from mid-May 2022.

Investigators then analyzed all mobile phone traffic in the areas where the boat was located, trawling through thousands of connections to distill the relevant data.

At one point they were startled to find out that thousands of German mobile phones were active in the tiny Swedish port of Sandhamn, which was nearly empty at the time the boat was sheltering there from a storm.

It later emerged that a vast cruise ship belonging to a tourist operator passed by and the phones of German passengers briefly linked up with the local cellular mast.

They struggled at one point to secure the cooperation of Polish authorities despite the fact that the saboteurs used Poland partly as a logistical base and stopped in the Polish port of Kolobrzeg.

A port official suspicious of the yacht’s crew alerted police. Poland’s border guard checked the identification of the crew, who produced passports from European Union members. They were allowed to continue sailing north, where they laid the rest of the mines, people familiar with the investigation say.

The entire port was covered by extensive video surveillance, they found. However, despite a history of close cooperation between Warsaw and Berlin in police matters, Polish officials initially refused to hand over the CCTV footage of the port. This year, they told their German colleagues that the footage had been routinely destroyed shortly after the Andromeda departed.

The Polish internal security agency ABW told the Journal that no such footage exists.

By November 2022, German investigators believed Ukrainians were behind the explosion.

Earlier this year, Zelensky ousted Zaluzhniy from his military post, saying a shakeup was needed to reboot the war effort. Zaluzhniy, who has been viewed domestically as a potential political rival, was later appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.K., a position that grants him immunity from prosecution.

In June, German officials issued a confidential arrest warrant for a Ukrainian citizen who the Germans believe was one of the crew members. According to people familiar with the investigation, a van driving the Ukrainian sabotage team from Poland into Germany in 2022 was snapped by a German speed camera, and the man, a diving instructor living with his family near Warsaw, was in the photo.

Authorities in Poland didn’t act on the warrant. The instructor is believed to have since returned to Ukraine. Poland’s failure to arrest him is a major blow to the German probe, because he and other suspects have now been tipped off and will avoid travelling outside Ukraine, people familiar with the investigation said. Ukraine doesn’t extradite its own citizens.

Ukrainian officials who participated in or are familiar with the plot believe it would be impossible to put any of the commanding officers on trial, because no evidence exists beyond conversations among top officials who were, at least initially, all in agreement about wanting to blow up the pipelines.

“None of them will testify, lest they incriminate themselves,” one former officer said.

Die brandneue Gigayacht "Nord" liegt seit Mittwoch (3.3.) vor Mallorca . Der Wert dieser erst vor wenigen Wochen im Auftrag eines russischen Multimilliardärs vom Stapel gelaufenen Yacht wird auf bis zu 500 Millionen Euro geschätzt. Die Jungfernfahrt führte das schwimmende Luxusobjekt zum Hafen in Puerto Banús (Marbella). Anschließend legte das Schiff einen Zwischenstopp in Cartagena ein, um nach Mallorca überzusetzen.

Die "Nord" gilt zwar als Yacht, für die Yachten mit über 100 Metern Länge hat sich die Fachwelt aber das Attribut Gigayacht reserviert, um sie von den Superyachten oder schnöden Luxusyachten zu unterscheiden. Die Dimensionen erinnern an ein Kreuzfahrtschiff : 142 Meter Länge und 21 Meter Breite erlauben eine großzügige Ausgestaltung an Bord.

Die Werft Lürssen stellte die "Nord" Ende 2020 fertig. Das Innen- und Außendesign stammt vom italienischen Unternehmen Nuvolari Lenard. An Bord gibt es 36 Luxus-Suiten . Von außen gut zu erkennen ist auch der Hubschrauber-Landeplatz.

Nur knapp über dem Meeresspiegel gibt es auf dem Schiff einen großen Beachclub. Ein eigenes Theater und Kino , der Spa, die Sauna, das Fitnesscenter und selbstverständlich ein großes Schwimmbad gehören zu den Annehmlichkeiten, die dem Eigentümer und seinen Gäste das Leben an Bord verschönern. Für kleine Yachten, die zu Besuch kommen, verfügt die "Nord" über eine Art Yacht-Garage . Trotz der Größe kommt das Schiff auf eine Reisegeschwindigkeit von 15 Knoten. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit liegt bei 20 Knoten.

Ob auch der Besitzer an Bord ist, der russische Magnat Alexei Alexandrowitsch Mordaschow , wurde zunächst nicht bekannt. Mordaschows Unternehmen Severstal ist einer der größten Stahlproduzenten der Welt und beliefert unter anderem die deutsche Autoindustrie. Der Familie Mordaschow gehörte Ende Dezember 25 Prozent des mit Milliarden Staatshilfen geretteten deutschen Reiseveranstalters Tui . Er sitzt dort im Aufsichtsrat und plant einen weiteren Ausbau seiner Anteile. Das Wirtschaftsmagazin "Forbes" schätzte sein Vermögen im Jahr 2018 auf 20,5 Milliarden US-Dollar.

How did divers manage to blow up the Nord Stream pipeline? We went down to the spot to find out

German network ard chartered yacht and divers to see how sabotage occurred.

It was an event that rocked Europe and shook world affairs. 

Early in the morning on Sept. 26, 2022, a series of powerful undersea explosions damaged pipelines under the Baltic Sea near Denmark that carried Russian natural gas to Germany. 

Fingers were immediately pointed at Ukraine, which had been at war with Russia since the latter invaded in February of that year. Ukraine denied involvement, and in the absence of reliable information, conspiracy theories proliferated about who attacked the Nord Stream pipeline.

Did a Russian submarine intentionally destroy it in order to cut off the gas supply to Germany, a country allied with Ukraine? Was it the CIA, as famed U.S. investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote? 

The German government has been tightlipped about the affair for two years, but this week, German media outlets ARD, Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit jointly reported that federal prosecutors obtained an arrest warrant against a Ukrainian man. A Polish government spokesperson confirmed it.

The German reports identified the man as Volodymyr Z., a diving instructor who last resided in Poland. In a brief telephone conversation on Tuesday with reporters from ARD, Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit, Volodymyr Z. expressed surprise at the accusations and denied involvement.

A report this week by the Wall Street Journal also pointed to Ukraine, suggesting the operation was carried out by Ukrainian soldiers and civilians with diving expertise and under the direction of Ukraine's then-commander-in-chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

Journalists at ARD, Germany's public broadcaster, have been hot on the trail since the shocking explosions took place. I was one of the reporters who was part of the team that spent months piecing together what may have occurred. 

To understand what happened to the Nord Stream pipeline that day, ARD chartered the very yacht the perpetrators allegedly used and sent divers into the roiling waters of the Baltic Sea to see how the pipeline might have been attacked.

Group chartered sailing yacht

Several outlets have reported that in early September 2022, a sailing yacht called Andromeda set sail from the port of Hohe Düne in Rostock, Germany. According to the ARD investigation, the commando that was to destroy the pipelines was on board the Andromeda. The group is said to have consisted of six people — five men and one woman. Among them, it is suspected, was Volodymyr Z.

After stops in Rügen, Bornholm and Christiansø in Denmark, Sandhamn in Sweden and Kołobrzeg in Poland, the boat returned to Rostock. 

At some point during the trip, investigators believe the crew dove from the yacht down to the seabed and, in the darkness of the Baltic Sea, attached the explosive devices to the pipeline at a depth of around 80 metres. 

What happened later is well-known. At 2:03 a.m. local time on Sept. 26, 2022, the first explosion damaged Nord Stream 2. Approximately 16 hours later, three other explosions damaged Nord Stream 1. Investigators later found residue of the explosive HMX, also known as octogen, on board the Andromeda.

During our investigation, we wondered just how hard it would have been to carry out such a mission. 

The Andromeda is a charter yacht. Anyone can rent it — so we rented it, too, and took three divers with us.  

As with many charter yachts, the Andromeda was not in the best condition — our skipper called it "one of the worst boats I've ever sailed with." 

He said several electrical components were broken and that the yacht didn't move well in the waves. Then there was the swim platform, which the divers would need to get on and off the boat. If the swell is high, the platform moves up and down, punching into the sea. A diver trying to get back on the boat could be slammed on the head by the platform, causing serious injury. For us, this risk was too high. 

So we returned the Andromeda and chartered a professional diving vessel with a crew that usually recovers Second World War explosives from the bed of the Baltic Sea. 

We then drove to the exact spot where the first explosion happened — 120 kilometres off the German coast, with the Danish island Bornholm in sight.

Trained divers required

We arrived at 6 a.m. to witness a symbolic moment in the Baltic Sea. 

A Russian military ship appeared. Through our radio, we heard, "Russian warship delta echo, U.S. warship Yankee." The U.S. Navy was trying to make contact with the Russian Navy right before our eyes. How could a sabotage operation have gone on undetected in this environment?

The burst pipeline lay almost 80 metres beneath us, a depth not every diver could handle. 

You need to be trained as a tech diver. At that depth, you have to breathe a special mixture of oxygen, helium and nitrogen, and that means carrying about 220 pounds of equipment. 

It is also pitch black at the bottom of the sea. The multiple scuba tanks gave the divers about 40 minutes to find the pipeline, which means they needed to know precisely where to look. A sonar device was required to locate the pipeline beforehand. The Andromeda did not have this kind of device on board, but our new vessel did. 

Our tech divers found the burst pipeline on their second try and filmed it. 

The difficult part for the divers was returning to the surface. The pressure is so intense that if the ascent is not done correctly, divers could experience serious symptoms like paralysis or damage to their lungs. Doing proper decompression from such a depth — which requires divers to switch to a different gas mix — takes about two hours. 

Conducting a complex mission like that from the Andromeda would have been difficult and dangerous. According to the German investigation, it's plausible Volodymyr Z. was trained for dives like that.

Everyone who has examined the Andromeda agrees it's not the vessel anyone would choose to secure a mission. 

As our tech diver Derk Remmers put it: "I would use the Andromeda for a vacation, but not a sabotage mission."

Yet this could be precisely why the saboteurs used it. To stay undetected and unaccountable — which they managed to do until the charges were made public this week.

German prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian man over the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, German media reported Wednesday, with Polish prosecutors confirming they had received the warrant.

In the two years since the mysterious explosions hit the pipelines, speculation has been rife around who was responsible with Ukraine and Russia both vehemently denying any involvement.

But German media reported on Wednesday that a European arrest warrant had been requested for a Ukrainian man, a diving instructor whose last known address was in Poland.

The Polish prosecutor’s office told AFP it had received the warrant for a man named as “Volodymyr Z.” in June “in connection with proceedings against him in Germany”.

However, the man left for Ukraine at the beginning of July before he could be detained, it said.

German investigators believe the man was one of the divers who planted explosive devices on the Nord Stream pipelines, according to the ARD broadcaster and newspapers Die Zeit and the Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

They have also identified two more Ukrainians, a man and a woman, who they believe acted as divers in the attacks, the reports said -- believed to be a married couple who run a diving school in Ukraine.

However, no arrest warrants have yet been issued for them.

Different German media outlets reported Wednesday that they had reached Volodymyr Z. and the woman in question, who both denied any involvement.

The German federal prosecution service declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

German government spokesman Wolfgang Buechner also did not comment directly on the reports but stressed that German prosecutors’ “investigations are being carried out according to the law regardless of who is concerned and which results they lead to”.

Buechner told reporters at a press conference that the results of the probe “of course do not change anything about the fact that Russia is waging an illegal war of aggression against Ukraine”.

Polish prosecutors said the suspect had been able to leave Poland because German investigators did not “include him in the database of wanted persons”.

“The Polish Border Guard had no knowledge and no grounds for detaining Volodymyr Z.,” the prosecutor’s office told AFP.

Nord Stream’s two pipelines had been at the centre of geopolitical tensions as Russia cut gas supplies to Europe in suspected retaliation for Western sanctions over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Four large gas leaks were discovered in September 2022 in the pipelines off the Danish island of Bornholm, with seismic institutes recording two underwater explosions just before.

While the leaks were in international waters, two were in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone and two in Sweden’s.

The pipelines were not in operation when the leaks occurred, but they still contained gas which spewed up to the surface and into the atmosphere.

The Ukrainian suspects are accused of transporting the explosives used in the attack in a sailing yacht called the Andromeda, according to the German media reports.

The same yacht was searched by German investigators in January 2023. According to reports at the time, a team of five men and one woman chartered the yacht from Rostock port to carry out the operation.

In June 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insisted Kyiv knew nothing about any plan to blow up the pipelines.

As president he has the power to give orders, Zelensky said in an interview with Germany’s Bild daily.

“I did nothing like that. I would never do that,” he said.

Denmark, Sweden and Germany all opened investigations into the explosions. However, Denmark and Sweden both closed their investigations earlier this year.

Sweden ends Nord Stream sabotage probe, hands evidence to Germany

Sweden on Wednesday dropped its investigation into the explosions in 2022 on Nord Stream pipelines carrying Russian gas to Germany, saying it lacked jurisdiction in the case but had handed evidence it had uncovered over to German investigators.

The multibillion-dollar Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines transporting gas under the Baltic Sea were ruptured by a series of blasts in the Swedish and Danish economic zones in Sep. 2022, releasing vast amounts of methane into the air.

Russia and the West, at loggerheads over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February that year, have pointed fingers at one another. Each has denied any involvement and no one has taken responsibility.

Swedish Public Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist told Reuters: “We have a picture of what has happened, and what that picture consists of we cannot go into more detail, but it leads to the conclusion that we do not have jurisdiction,” he said.

“It is not Sweden’s task to continue this investigation.”

Ljungqvist said the main task had been to establish whether Sweden or Swedish citizens were involved in the attack, which he said had taken place in international waters.

“The answer to that question is ‘no’ and there is nothing in this case that poses any risk to Sweden’s security now that we have seen how things stand,” he said.

Ljungqvist said the investigation had been extensive and the findings shared with German investigators, but secrecy laws prevented him from making the evidence public.

Denmark and Germany are carrying out separate investigations. A German government spokesperson said Berlin was still interested in solving the case.

Danish police said on Wednesday they expected to provide more information on their investigation “within a short time”.

In July, Germany told the U.N. Security Council it had found traces of subsea explosives on a sailing yacht that may have been used to transport the explosives and that trained divers may have attached the explosives to the pipelines.

Russia has blamed the United States, Britain, and Ukraine for the blasts which largely cut it off from the lucrative European market. Those countries have denied involvement.

Some Western officials have said Russian military vessels were in the area at the time of the blasts, but others have said there is no hard evidence to implicate Russia, which called the suggestion it was behind the attacks “absurd”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that Russia would now watch what Germany would do to investigate the explosions.

“Of course, now we need to see how Germany itself reacts to this, as a country that has lost a lot in relation to this terrorist attack,” he said.

Moscow has repeatedly complained about lack of insight into the Western investigations.

Sinds de invasie van Oekraïne zijn zo'n 133.000 inwoners van de Russische grensregio Koersk op de vlucht geslagen. Dat heeft de gouverneur van de regio volgens staatspersbureau TASS gezegd in een videogesprek met de Russische president Poetin.

Zo'n 20.000 mensen zijn achtergebleven in de acht districten waarvoor een evacuatiebevel geldt. In het gesprek met de president en ministers zou ook het onderwijs zijn besproken van scholieren die in september niet naar een van de 114 scholen in de regio terug kunnen. Ingewijden zien daar een teken in dat Rusland niet denkt de Oekraïners op korte termijn uit de regio te zullen verdrijven.

De verrassingsaanval van Oekraïense troepen begon op 6 augustus. Inmiddels zou ruim 1250 vierkante kilometer zijn veroverd. De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky heeft aangegeven dat zijn leger het gebied is binnengevallen, omdat Rusland vanuit Koersk veel aanvallen op Oekraïne uitvoerde. VN-atoomwaakhond bevestigt bezoek topman aan Koersk

De topman van het Internationaal Atoomenergieagentschap (IAEA) reist volgende week naar de kerncentrale in de Russische regio Koersk, bevestigt een woordvoerder. Die deelde geen details over het bezoek. Volgens de provinciegouverneur Aleksej Smirnov is de toestand in Koersk stabiel.

Het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken meldde woensdag dat directeur-generaal Rafael Grossi eind augustus naar Koersk gaat. Oekraïne begon eerder deze maand met een offensief in dit deel van Rusland. Het Russische ministerie van Defensie beschuldigde Oekraïne er vorige week van een aanval op het nucleaire complex te plannen. Kyiv ontkent de beschuldiging en spreekt van ‘propaganda’. De Russische president Vladimir Poetin herhaalde donderdag de beschuldigingen en zei dat de Oekraïners in de nacht van woensdag op donderdag een aanval op de kerncentrale wilden uitvoeren.

De atoomwaakhond van de Verenigde Naties riep beide landen twee weken geleden op tot ‘maximale terughoudendheid’ om ‘een nucleair ongeval met mogelijk ernstige radiologische gevolgen te voorkomen’. Grossi zei in contact te staan met de relevante autoriteiten van zowel Rusland als Oekraïne. De kerncentrale in Koersk heeft volgens het IAEA zes reactoren, waarvan er momenteel twee operationeel zijn.

De twee landen ruziën tijdens de oorlog regelmatig over de veiligheid van kerncentrales, met name over die in Zaporizja in het zuiden van Oekraïne. De strijdende partijen geven elkaar de schuld van beschietingen in de buurt van dit nucleaire complex. De centrale van Zaporizja, de grootste in Europa, staat sinds het begin van de oorlog onder Russische controle. (ANP)

Russische onderzoeken naar journalisten om verslag vanuit Koersk

De Russische veiligheidsdienst FSB zegt strafrechtelijke onderzoeken te beginnen naar drie journalisten voor hun verslaggeving vanuit door Oekraïne gecontroleerde delen van de Russische regio Koersk. Ze worden beschuldigd van het "illegaal" oversteken van de grens, waar vijf jaar gevangenisstraf voor kan worden opgelegd.

Een van de journalisten is een correspondent van de Amerikaanse zender CNN. Hij deed op 16 augustus verslag vanuit Soedzja, een plaats in het zuidwesten van Koersk. De twee anderen zijn Oekraïense journalisten van nieuwssite Hromadske en tv-zender My-Ukraina. Ook zij deden verslag vanuit Soedzja. De journalisten worden volgens de FSB binnenkort op een internationale opsporingslijst geplaatst.

Rusland begon eerder een zaak tegen twee Italiaanse journalisten van de omroep RAI, Simone Traini en Stefania Battistini, voor hun werk vanuit Soedzja. Rusland ontbood vorige week de Italiaanse ambassadeur als reactie op de berichtgeving en opende zaterdag een strafrechtelijk onderzoek tegen de Italianen. (ANP/AFP)

Het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken meldde woensdag dat directeur-generaal Rafael Grossi eind augustus naar Koersk gaat. Oekraïne begon eerder deze maand met een offensief in dit deel van Rusland. Het Russische ministerie van Defensie beschuldigde Oekraïne er vorige week van een aanval op het nucleaire complex te plannen. Kyiv ontkent de beschuldiging en spreekt van "propaganda".

De twee landen ruziën tijdens de oorlog regelmatig over de veiligheid van kerncentrales, met name over die in Zaporizja in het zuiden van Oekraïne. De strijdende partijen geven elkaar de schuld van beschietingen in de buurt van dit nucleaire complex. Koersk installeert betonnen schuilplaatsen voor burgers

De Russische autoriteiten in de regio Koersk zijn begonnen met de plaatsing van betonnen schuilplaatsen. Die moeten burgers bescherming bieden tijdens het Oekraïense offensief in het gebied, aldus de regionale gouverneur Aleksej Smirnov.

Smirnov heeft op Telegram bekendgemaakt dat de schuilplaatsen op drukke plekken in de stad Koersk komen, waaronder op zestig busstations. De gouverneur meldt ook dat vergelijkbare schuilplaatsen worden geïnstalleerd in twee andere plaatsen.

De Oekraïense krijgsmacht begon enkele weken geleden met een offensief in de Russische regio aan de grens met Oekraïne. Kyiv zegt meer dan negentig plaatsen te hebben heroverd. Volgens Rusland zijn ongeveer 122.000 mensen op de vlucht geslagen. (ANP/Reuters)

Oekraïne meldt tientallen aanvallen op frontlinie bij Pokrovsk

Het Oekraïense leger heeft woensdag tientallen Russische aanvallen gemeld aan de frontlinie bij de strategisch belangrijke plaats Pokrovsk in Oost-Oekraïne. President Volodymyr Zelensky zei op televisie dat duidelijk is wat Rusland daar van plan is en dat er snel versterking zal worden gestuurd.

Pokrovsk ligt op een belangrijke weg die meerdere steden met elkaar verbindt en wordt gebruikt om de Oekraïense militairen te bevoorraden. De Russische strijdkrachten zijn de afgelopen tijd verder opgerukt in het gebied. Die opmars heeft ook gevolgen voor burgers in het gebied. De Oekraïense autoriteiten gaven gezinnen met kinderen deze week opdracht Pokrovsk en de omgeving te verlaten. Daar wonen naar schatting nog zo'n 50.000 mensen.

Het Oekraïense leger zegt dat woensdag 46 Russische aanvallen zijn gemeld op de frontlinie bij Pokrovsk. Daar zouden 238 Russische manschappen zijn gedood of gevangengenomen. De eigen verliezen worden niet gemeld. Zelensky riep buitenlandse partners op de afspraken na te komen over de levering van munitie aan zijn land. Dat is volgens hem essentieel voor de verdediging. Oekraïens parlement stemt in met verdrag Internationaal Strafhof

Het parlement in Oekraïne heeft ingestemd met de ratificatie van het Statuut van Rome. Dat is het verdrag dat aan de basis ligt van het Internationaal Strafhof (ICC) in Den Haag.

Het strafhof buigt zich volgens dat statuut over de ernstigste misdrijven die de internationale gemeenschap in haar geheel aangaan. Dat zijn genocide, misdrijven tegen de menselijkheid, oorlogsmisdrijven en agressie. Meer dan 120 gingen Oekraïne voor.

Instemming met het verdrag is belangrijke voorwaarde voor de eventuele toetreding van Oekraïne tot de Europese Unie. Oekraïne is sinds juni 2022 kandidaat-lidstaat. De toetredingsgesprekken begonnen afgelopen juni. (ANP)

Oekraïne meldt aanvallen op Russische pontonbruggen

Oekraïne zegt in de Russische regio Koersk pontonbruggen en ander materieel te vernietigen met Amerikaanse wapens. De strijdkrachten deelden daar op sociale media beelden van en zeggen dat de bruggen met precisieaanvallen worden uitgeschakeld. Daarbij zou onder meer het Amerikaanse raketartilleriesysteem Himars worden gebruikt.

De Russische autoriteiten hadden eerder al melding gemaakt van Oekraïense aanvallen op zeker drie reguliere bruggen over de rivier Sejm. Pontonbruggen drijven op pontons en legers kunnen die als tijdelijke verbinding aanleggen. 

De Amerikaanse militaire denktank Institute for the Study of War schrijft dat uit satellietbeelden kan worden opgemaakt dat de Oekraïners op 19 augustus al minstens een van die drijvende bruggen hadden verwoest.

De Oekraïense strijdkrachten hebben ook beelden verspreid van aanvallen op andere doelen, zoals legertrucks en een gebouw dat een munitieopslag wordt genoemd. (ANP)

Rusland stelt verkiezingen in regio Koersk deels uit

De Russische kiescommissie heeft woensdag aangekondigd dat de verkiezingen in de regio Koersk deels worden uitgesteld. Oekraïense troepen begonnen ruim twee weken geleden met een offensief in de grensregio.

In zeven gemeenten vinden de verkiezingen pas plaats als er "volledige garantie is voor de veiligheid van de kiezers", aldus de commissie op Telegram. De rest van de regio kiest vanaf volgende week woensdag zoals gepland een nieuwe regionale gouverneur. De stembureaus sluiten op 8 september. De stemming was eerder vervroegd.

Kyiv zegt tientallen steden en dorpen in Koersk te hebben veroverd. In de regio net over de grens met Oekraïne zijn de afgelopen weken meerdere evacuaties geweest. Rusland zegt dat meer dan 120.000 burgers uit het gebied hebben moeten vluchten. (ANP)

Rusland vernietigt elf op Moskou afgestuurde drones

De Russische luchtverdediging heeft elf drones vernietigd die door Oekraïne waren afgestuurd op Moskou. Dat heeft Sergei Sobyanin, burgemeester van de Russische hoofdstad, woensdag gezegd, zo meldt Reuters .

"Volgens voorlopige gegevens is er geen sprake van schade of slachtoffers op de plek waar het puin viel", aldus zei Sobyanin op de Telegram-berichtenapp. Volgens hem is het de grootste droneaanval op Moskou sinds het uitbreken van de oorlog. 

Ook werden 15 drones vernietigd boven de grensregio Bryansk, zo hebben Russische functionarissen bekend gemaakt. Ook daar vielen geen slachtoffers, zo liet Alexander Bogomaz, de gouverneur van de regio, weten op Telegram.

Oekraïne begon op 6 augustus een offensief op Russisch grondgebied. Het zegt intussen al 1.250 vierkante meter te controleren. Tegelijkertijd boeken de Russen terreinwinst aan het front in het oosten van Oekraïne.   ( Redactie)

Russen overtuigd dat Navo-landen Oekraïne hielpen bij inval Koersk

De inval van Oekraïne in de Russische regio Koersk zou zijn voorbereid met medewerking van inlichtingendiensten uit de Verenigde Staten, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Polen. Dat meldt de Russische krant Izvestia , die zich daarbij baseert op informatie van de Russische buitenlandse inlichtingendienst.

Op 6 augustus begonnen Oekraïense troepen een verrassingsaanval op Koersk. Inmiddels zou ruim 1250 vierkante kilometer zijn veroverd. Kyiv spreekt over "defensieve operaties" om een bufferzone te creëren. De Russen gebruikten Koersk voor aanvallen op Oekraïne. (ANP)

Russen claimen verovering Oekraïense plaats New York

De Russische strijdkrachten melden de verovering van de plaats New York in de Oost-Oekraïense regio Donetsk. Volgens de Russen was het een belangrijk logistiek knooppunt voor Oekraïense troepen.

"Novgorodskoye (de oude Russische naam voor New York) is bevrijd", aldus het Russische ministerie van Defensie. De nederzetting, die in de 19e eeuw door Duitse kolonisten werd bewoond, droeg de naam New York tot 1951. De Sovjetautoriteiten herdoopten de plaats midden in de Koude Oorlog tot "Nieuwe stad". Onder druk van Oekraïense activisten werd het medio 2021 weer New York.

Het dorp, dat zo'n 10.000 inwoners telde, ligt bij de grotendeels verwoeste stad Toretsk, die sinds enkele weken doelwit is van een Russisch offensief. Hier in Oost-Oekraïne blijven de Russische troepen, beter uitgerust en talrijker, geleidelijk oprukken. (ANP)

Oekraïens parlement neemt wet aan om kerk te verbieden

Het Oekraïense parlement heeft een wet aangenomen waarmee een kerk verboden kan worden die banden heeft met Rusland. De nieuwe wet moet rechters meer mogelijkheden geven om op te treden tegen religieuze organisaties die banden hebben met Rusland.

Met de nieuwe wet kan de rechter onder meer de Oekraïens-Orthodoxe Kerk verbieden. Die kerk heeft banden met het patriarchaat van Moskou en volgens de Oekraïense regering ook met de regering in Moskou. Dat laatste heeft de kerk ontkend.

De wet is al langere tijd in de maak. In het parlement, de Verchovna Rada, stemden uiteindelijk 265 van de 450 leden ermee in. De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky moet de wet nog ondertekenen. (ANP)

Oekraïne meldt vijfde raketaanval op Kyiv deze maand

Voor de vijfde keer deze maand heeft Rusland raketten afgevuurd op Kyiv, meldt het Oekraïense leger dinsdagochtend in een verklaring. Het luchtafweergeschut zou de aanval succesvol hebben afgeslagen.

Het leger stelt ook dat de Oekraïense hoofdstad maandagavond laat getroffen werd door Russische drones. Zowel bij de droneaanval als bij de raketaanval zou niemand gewond zijn geraakt, al is nog niet helemaal duidelijk wat er precies getroffen is.

Getuigen melden dinsdagochtend vroeg explosies in Kyiv, maar dat kan ook het luchtafweergeschut zijn geweest. Het luchtalarm klonk deze maand al 41 keer in Kyiv. (ANP)

Rusland: Oekraïne heeft derde brug geraakt bij aanval op Koersk

Oekraïne heeft volgens Rusland een derde brug beschadigd bij zijn aanval op de Russische regio Koersk, meldt het Kremlin. Het zou gaan om een brug over de rivier de Sejm die door Koersk slingert, een gebied ten noordoosten van Oekraïne.

Oekraïne heeft nog niet gereageerd op de door Rusland gemelde aanval. Eerder zei de Oekraïense luchtmachtchef dat zijn troepen twee bruggen hebben vernietigd om de vijandelijke logistiek te verzwakken.

Het doel van de op 6 augustus gelanceerde verrassingsaanval is volgens Kyiv een bufferzone te creëren en de Russische oorlogsmachine uit te putten. De Oekraïners hebben naar eigen zeggen meer dan tachtig nederzettingen ingenomen in een gebied van ruim 1150 vierkante kilometer.

Elders in het land zijn de Oekraïense troepen in het defensief gedrongen. Zo rukken Russische troepen op naar de oostelijke stad Pokrovsk, een verkeersknooppunt aan een belangrijke weg naar het noordoosten, waar onder meer het front rond Bachmoet is. De Oekraïense autoriteiten hebben gezinnen opgedragen Pokrovsk te verlaten. (ANP)

Modi gaat naar Oekraïne, voor het eerst sinds de invasie

De Indiase premier Narendra Modi gaat op 23 augustus naar Oekraïne, bevestigt het Indiase ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Oekraïne is sinds het begin van de Russische invasie in 2022 bezocht door tal van buitenlandse leiders, maar Modi was nog niet gegaan.

Dergelijke bezoeken zijn voor Modi een diplomatieke balanceeract. Zijn land heeft een vriendschappelijke relatie met Rusland, maar zet ook in op goede banden met het Westen. Het Indiase ministerie meldt dat president Volodymyr Zelensky hem heeft uitgenodigd.

De Indiase leider bracht vorige maand een bezoek aan Rusland en deelde toen een foto waarop hij president Vladimir Poetin omhelsde. Dat leidde tot een geërgerde reactie van Oekraïne, onder meer omdat kort daarvoor een kinderziekenhuis was beschadigd bij een aanval op Kyiv. Zelensky noemde het een grote teleurstelling dat "de leider van de grootste democratie" op zo'n dag vriendschappelijk omgaat met een "crimineel" als Poetin. (ANP)

Gezinnen verplicht Oekraïense plaats Pokrovsk te verlaten

De Oekraïense autoriteiten hebben gezinnen opgedragen te vertrekken uit de stad Pokrovsk en omgeving. Er was al eerder een soortgelijke oproep gedaan, maar de evacuatie is nu verplicht en indien nodig wordt volgens de regiogouverneur dwang toegepast.

De plaats ligt in de regio Donbas ruim 10 kilometer van het front en ruim 500 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Kyiv. Russische troepen zijn aan dat front in opmars. Ze hebben Pokrovsk in het vizier omdat het een verkeersknooppunt is. De stad ligt niet alleen aan de hoofdweg Dnipro - Donetsk, maar ook aan een belangrijke weg naar het noordoosten, waar onder meer het front rond Bachmoet is. 

De inname van Pokrovsk zou een gevaar kunnen betekenen voor de Oekraïense troepen aan dat front. Volgens het Oekraïense opperbevel wordt er hard gevochten aan het front ten oosten van Pokrovsk. (ANP)

India bevestigt dat Modi naar Oekraïne gaat

Rusland zet stichting Hollywoodster Clooney op zwarte lijst

De autoriteiten in Rusland zetten de stichting van Hollywoodster George Clooney en zijn echtgenote Amal op de zwarte lijst. Aanklagers hebben de Amerikaanse non-profitorganisatie Clooney Foundation for Justice aangemerkt als "onwenselijke" organisatie, wat feitelijk neerkomt op een verbod.

Rusland beschuldigt de stichting van de acteur en mensenrechtenadvocaat Amal Clooney ervan "onder het mom van een humanitair gedachtegoed" Rusland in diskrediet te brengen. Volgens de Russische justitie wordt vanuit de stichting kritiek geuit op wetgeving en worden initiatieven ondersteund om Russische topfunctionarissen strafrechtelijk te vervolgen.

De Russische autoriteiten hebben tal van organisaties als "onwenselijk" aangemerkt omdat ze een gevaar zouden vormen voor de staatsveiligheid. Het gaat onder meer om politieke en culturele organisaties en media, zoals The Moscow Times.

De Clooney Foundation heeft nog niet gereageerd. De organisatie zegt zich in te zetten om "een wereld te creëren waar mensenrechten worden beschermd en niemand boven de wet staat". (ANP/Reuters)

Rusland dient klacht in bij Duitsland over onderzoek Nord Stream

Rusland heeft bij Duitsland een klacht ingediend over het Duitse onderzoek naar de explosies van de Nord Stream-pijpleiding in 2022. Dat heeft het Russische persbureau RIA Novosti maandag gemeld, nadat een hoofdverdachte in Polen aan arrestatie ontsnapte.

Duitse media meldden vorige week dat Duitse aanklagers een Oekraïense duikinstructeur hadden geïdentificeerd als hoofdverdachte van de sabotageactie aan de Nord Stream-pijpleiding. Vervolgens was een arrestatiebevel uitgevaardigd in Polen.

Polen ontving het arrestatiebevel wel, maar de verdachte kon het land verlaten omdat Duitsland zijn naam niet had opgenomen in een database van gezochte personen, vertelden Poolse aanklagers aan persbureau Reuters.

Moskou gelooft dat het Duitse onderzoek zal worden afgesloten zonder de verantwoordelijken te identificeren, zei het hoofd van een Europese afdeling van het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken.

"We hebben de kwestie aan de orde gesteld dat Duitsland en andere getroffen landen hun verplichtingen volgens de VN antiterrorismeverdragen nakomen", aldus het Russische hoofd. (ANP/Reuters)

Kremlin ontkent geheime onderhandelingen met Kyiv

Het Kremlin heeft berichten tegengesproken dat er in het geheim wordt onderhandeld met Oekraïne over een staakt-het-vuren. Afgelopen week berichtte hier onder meer de Washington Post over. De krant zei dat de recente Oekraïense aanval op de Russische provincie Koersk plannen voor geheime gesprekken doorkruiste. De strijdende partijen zouden mogelijk contact zoeken over de bescherming van civiele infrastructuur bij vijandelijkheden en eventueel een staakt-het-vuren of plaatselijke stopzetting van aanvallen.

"Er waren en er zijn geen directe of indirecte onderhandelingen met het regime in Kyiv", aldus de woordvoerster van het Russische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. De enige contacten die er volgens haar zijn, lopen via bemiddelaars en gaan voornamelijk over humanitaire kwesties, vooral de uitwisseling van krijgsgevangenen. Oekraïne heeft onderhandelen ook wettelijk verboden nadat het land in 2022 uit vredesonderhandelingen was gestapt, aldus de woordvoerster. (ANP)

Oekraïne meldt vernietiging van brug in Koersk

Oekraïne zegt opnieuw een brug te hebben aangevallen in de Russische regio Koersk. "Weer een brug minder", schreef de Oekraïense luchtmachtchef Mykola Olesjtsjoek op Telegram. Hij deelde luchtbeelden waarop een explosie te zien is.

Het lijkt te gaan om een brug over de rivier Sejm die in de buurt ligt van het dorp Zvannoje, op zo'n 15 kilometer van de landsgrens. Volgens Olesjtsjoek wordt met precisieaanvallen geprobeerd de "logistieke capaciteiten van de vijand" te ondermijnen.

Het is onduidelijk wanneer de aanval plaatsvond. Oekraïne maakte ook al bekend ook een andere brug over de Sejm te hebben opgeblazen.

De Oekraïense inval van Rusland begon eerder deze maand. De Oekraïense autoriteiten zeggen in het buurland meer dan tachtig plaatsen te hebben ingenomen.

Legertop Oekraïne: Russische luchtaanval op Kyiv

De Oekraïense legertop heeft laten weten dat de luchtverdedigingseenheden van het land zondagochtend proberen een Russische luchtaanval op Kyiv af te slaan. Vanaf een uur of 02.00 uur (lokale tijd) ging in de hoofdstad, en ook in veel andere delen van Noord- en Centraal-Oekraïne, het luchtalarm af.

Een bron van Reuters in Kyiv zei tegen het persbureau inderdaad knallen te horen die lijken te worden geproduceerd door luchtafweersystemen in en rond de stad.

Op zijn buurt viel Oekraïne met drones een doelwit in de Russische regio Rostov aan. Brokstukken van een uit de lucht geschoten drone veroorzaakten een brand in een industriële opslagplaats, zei de Russische gouverneur van die regio zondagochtend. Baza, een Telegram-kanaal met goede contacten binnen de Russische veiligheidsdiensten, stelt dat het een olieopslagplaats betreft. Persbureau Reuters kon de berichten niet onafhankelijk verifiëren.  (ANP)

Internationaal Atoomagentschap: veiligheid kerncentrale Zaporizja verder verslechterd

De veiligheid rond de kerncentrale bij de Oekraïense stad Zaporizja, in door de Russen bezet gebied, is zaterdag verder verslechterd. Dat heeft Rafael Grossi, de algemeen directeur van het Internationaal Atoomenergieagentschap, zaterdag gezegd na een droneaanval in de buurt van het complex.

Het Russische management van de centrale zei tegen het eigen staatspersbureau TASS dat een Oekraïense drone een explosief dropte op een toegangsweg die vaak wordt gebruikt door personeelsleden. Er is geen melding gemaakt van slachtoffers. (ANP)

Overleg tussen Rusland en Oekraïne gestaakt door operatie in Koersk

Rusland en Oekraïne hadden deze maand in Qatar indirect overleg gepland over het beëindigen van de aanvallen op elkaars energie-infrastructuur, schrijft The Washington Post na gesprekken met ingewijden. 

De geplande onderhandelingen zouden zijn ontspoord door de Oekraïense inval in de Russische regio Koersk. De Russische delegatie noemde dat "een escalatie" en stelde overleg uit met vertegenwoordigers van de Golfstaat, zegt een diplomaat.

Het was volgens ingewijden de bedoeling dat functionarissen uit Qatar zouden optreden als tussenpersonen tussen de strijdende partijen. Als die het eens worden over het staken van aanvallen op bepaalde infrastructuur, zou dat feitelijk neerkomen op een gedeeltelijke wapenstilstand. Sommige betrokkenen hoopten naar verluidt dat zo een basis gelegd zou kunnen worden om later afspraken te maken over het beëindigen van de oorlog.

Rusland heeft tijdens de oorlog de Oekraïense energievoorziening veelvuldig aangevallen met drones en raketten. Oekraïne voerde ondertussen droneaanvallen uit op de olie-industrie in Rusland. Onderhandelingen over een einde aan die beschietingen kunnen later mogelijk alsnog plaatsvinden, zegt de diplomaat. Rusland zou het overleg niet definitief hebben stopgezet. "Ze zeiden: geef ons tijd."

Qatar zou al zo'n twee maanden met Kyiv en Moskou praten over de niet-aanvalsovereenkomst voor doelen in de energiesector. Beide partijen stemden in met een top in Doha om de laatste details uit te werken. Oekraïne wilde naar verluidt nog steeds een delegatie sturen nadat de Russen zich hadden teruggetrokken, maar dat zou de Golfstaat niet zinvol hebben gevonden.

Het kleine Qatar ontpopte zich de afgelopen jaren als een invloedrijke speler in de internationale diplomatie. De Golfstaat treedt onder meer op als gastland bij de onderhandelingen over een bestand in de Gazastrook. De Qatarese autoriteiten zouden door Oekraïne niet op voorhand zijn geïnformeerd over de geplande verrassingsaanval op het Russische Koersk.

Leger Oekraïne vernielt strategisch belangrijke brug in Koersk

De Oekraïense strijdkrachten hebben in de regio Koersk in Russisch grensgebied een strategisch belangrijke brug over de Sejm-rivier vernield. Dat hebben de Russische autoriteiten vrijdag zelf bekendgemaakt.

"We bevestigen berichten dat de vijand een brug over de Sejm heeft getroffen. De evacuatie over land vanuit een deel van het Glushkovsky-district is nu afgesneden", bericht het Russische persbureau Tass op basis van een Russische bron.

Het journalistieke platform Istories, naar eigen zeggen een van de weinige onafhankelijke Russische onderzoeksmedia, meldt dat de brug voor de Russen van groot strategisch belang was. Het Russische nieuwskanaal Mash stelt dat Oekraïense piloten de brug meerdere keren met raketten troffen.

Volgens de Britse zender BBC werd de brug door de Russen gebruikt om hun troepen te bevoorraden. Ook zou de brug belangrijk zijn geweest voor de evacuatie van zo'n 20.000 inwoners.

Oekraïne rukt verder op in Russische regio Koersk

Oekraïense strijdkrachten zijn verder opgerukt in de Russische regio Koersk. De troepen hebben in sommige gebieden zo'n 3 kilometer terreinwinst geboekt, zegt legerleider Oleksandr Syrsky tegen president Volodymyr Zelensky in een video die is geplaatst op berichtendienst Telegram.

De operatie in Koersk verloopt volgens plan, volgens Syrsky. De opperbevelhebber verwacht dat het leger daar "veel" Russische soldaten gevangen kan nemen die kunnen worden geruild met gevangengenomen Oekraïense soldaten.

Gouverneur Aleksej Smirnov van Koersk zei dat Oekraïne een verkeersbrug over de rivier Sejm heeft vernietigd. De brug zou belangrijk zijn geweest voor de evacuatie van zo'n 20.000 inwoners. (ANP)

VS gaan luchtverdedigingssystemen ter waarde van 5 miljard leveren aan Duitsland

De Verenigde Staten hebben donderdag aangekondigd dat ze de verkoop van zo'n 600 Patriot-raketten en aanverwante apparatuur ter waarde van 5 miljard dollar (zo'n 4,56 miljard euro) aan Duitsland hebben goedgekeurd. Dat land schenkt op zijn beurt een aantal van deze luchtverdedigingssytemen aan Oekraïne.

"Deze verkoop zal het buitenlands beleid en de nationale veiligheid van de VS versterken door het verbeteren van de veiligheid van een Navo-bondgenoot die ook een belangrijke kracht is voor de economische en politieke stabiliteit in Europa', zei het Amerikaanse bureau voor samenwerking op defensiegebied (DSCA) in een verklaring. Oekraïne doet sabotage-aantijging af als onzin

Oekraïne heeft mediaberichten dat het betrokken was bij de sabotage in 2022 van de Nord Stream-pijpleidingen met Russisch gas voor Europa, verworpen als ‘absolute onzin’. Volgens de Amerikaanse krant The Wall Street Journal  hield de toenmalige topcommandant van Oekraïne, generaal Valeri Zaloezjny, toezicht op het plan om de leidingen op te blazen. Maar de regering in Kyiv ontkent.

“De betrokkenheid van Oekraïne bij de ontploffingen van Nord Stream is absolute onzin. Dergelijke acties hadden voor Oekraïne geen enkele praktische zin”, aldus een adjudant van de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky. Hij benadrukt dat de explosies de Russische oorlog tegen Oekraïne niet hebben gestopt en de situatie aan het front niet hebben beïnvloed.

WSJ stelt dat Zelensky op de hoogte was van plannen om de Nord Stream-leidingen op te blazen. Hij zou daar aanvankelijk ook toestemming voor hebben gegeven. Zelensky veranderde van gedachten toen de Amerikaanse CIA hem vroeg van de sabotageactie af te zien. De CIA was over het bestaan van het plan ingelicht door de Nederlandse militaire inlichtingendienst MIVD. Zaloezjny zou toen hebben besloten toch door te zetten. (ANP)

Oekraïense krijgsmacht zegt kantoor te hebben in Koersk

De Oekraïense krijgsmacht zegt inmiddels 1150 vierkante kilometer Russisch grondgebied en 82 nederzettingen in handen te hebben. Oekraïne heeft bovendien een kantoor opgezet in Koersk, zegt opperbevelhebber Oleksandr Syrsky tegen president Volodymyr Zelensky in een video die is verspreid via Telegram.

Oekraïne claimt Koersk 35 kilometer binnengetrokken te zijn, waarvan de laatste anderhalve kilometer in de afgelopen 24 uur. Syrsky zegt dat zijn troepen nog altijd bezig zijn met een opmars.

Rusland claimde eerder donderdag voor het eerst sinds de Oekraïense operatie vorige week begon een dorp in Koersk heroverd te hebben. De Russische krijgsmacht zegt de Oekraïense militairen aan te vallen met vliegtuigen, artillerie en drones.

Het Britse ministerie van Defensie zegt dat het de Oekraïners vrijstaat om Britse wapens te gebruiken op Russisch grondgebied. Het gaat dan om Britse tanks, antitankwapens en ander materieel. De inzet van Storm Shadows, kruisraketten voor aanvallen over lange afstanden, is wel nog beperkt. Alleen doelen op Oekraïens grondgebied mogen daarmee worden aangevallen. (ANP)

Amerikaans-Russische vrouw twaalf jaar de cel in om hoogverraad

 Een Amerikaans-Russische vrouw heeft in Rusland een gevangenisstraf opgelegd gekregen van twaalf jaar. De rechtbank in Jekaterinenburg oordeelde dat Ksenia Karelina zich schuldig heeft gemaakt aan hoogverraad. Ze zou geld hebben overgemaakt naar een pro-Oekraïense organisatie.

Op videobeelden is te zien dat de dertiger in een glazen kooi stond terwijl het vonnis werd voorgelezen. Amerikaanse media hebben bericht dat de vrouw na aanvang van de Russische invasie van Oekraïne 50 dollar had overgemaakt naar een non-profitorganisatie. De Russische autoriteiten zeggen dat het geld is gebruikt om voorraden te kopen voor de Oekraïense strijdkrachten, waaronder ook wapens en munitie.

Karelina woont in de Verenigde Staten en werd opgepakt tijdens een familiebezoek in Rusland. Ze zou volgens berichten in Russische media in eerste instantie zijn vastgezet in verband met "vloeken in de openbare ruimte". Het komt vaker voor dat de Russische autoriteiten buitenlanders aanhouden voor relatief lichte vergrijpen, om vervolgens met zwaardere aanklachten te komen.

Het proces vond achter gesloten deuren plaats in dezelfde rechtbank waar eerder ook de Amerikaanse journalist Evan Gershkovich is veroordeeld. Hij kreeg zestien jaar cel opgelegd voor spionage. De verslaggever en andere gevangenen kwamen dit jaar vrij door een gevangenenruil. Karelina heeft schuld bekend en hoopt in de toekomst ook te worden geruild, zei haar advocaat volgens Russische media. (ANP)

Kyiv: Rusland verplaatst nog geen troepen uit Donbas naar Koersk

De Oekraïense inval in de Russische regio Koersk heeft er nog niet voor gezorgd dat de Russen troepen uit de Donbas weghalen om Koersk te verdedigen. Er is geen verschil te zien in het aantal Russische manschappen dat in Oost-Oekraïne blijft vechten, zegt een woordvoerder van de strijdkrachten in Oekraïne.

Oekraïne begon vorige week dinsdag met een verrassend grote operatie in Koersk en militaire waarnemers speculeerden dat een van de doelen van Oekraïne daarbij zou kunnen zijn om de druk op de frontlinie in het oosten verlichten. Dat lijkt nog niet echt het geval, want er wordt nog hevig gevochten in de Donbas, het gebied waar de Russen de afgelopen maanden langzaam terreinwinst boeken. Volgens de Oekraïense krijgsmacht blijft Rusland zich op de Donbas focussen om successen te behalen.

Het mensenrechtenkantoor van de Verenigde Naties heeft Rusland donderdag gevraagd om toegang tot het grensgebied waar de Oekraïners actief zijn. De Russen hebben daar tienduizenden burgers geëvacueerd. (ANP)

The Wall Street Journal: Zelensky wist van sabotage Nord Stream en keurde die goed

De Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky was op de hoogte van plannen om de Nord Stream-pijpleidingen op te blazen en gaf daar aanvankelijk ook toestemming voor. Dat schrijft The Wall Street Journal op basis van onder meer gesprekken met vier mensen die bij de sabotageactie van september 2022 waren betrokken.

Het plan voor de aanslag werd volgens de krant in mei van dat jaar bedacht tijdens een borrel van Oekraïense officieren en zakenmensen. De zakenmensen financierden de operatie, die zo'n 300.000 dollar kostte (272.000 euro). Het leger had geen geld.

Een van de betrokkenen vertelde de krant dat Zelensky het plan goedkeurde, iets wat drie andere bronnen bevestigen. Zelensky veranderde van gedachten toen de Amerikaanse CIA erover hoorde en hem vroeg om van de sabotageactie af te zien. De CIA was over het bestaan van het plan ingelicht door de Nederlandse militaire inlichtingendienst MIVD, schrijft The Wall Street Journal.

Het toenmalige hoofd van de Oekraïense generale staf, generaal Valeri Zaloezjny, besloot toch door te zetten. Zaloezjny, tegenwoordig ambassadeur in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, ontkent dit tegenover de krant. Duitsland vaardigde woensdag een eerste internationaal aanhoudingsbevel uit voor de aanslag op de Nord Stream-gaspijpleidingen. Volgens de krant richt het Duitse onderzoek zich nu ook op Zaloezjny.

The Wall Street Journal schrijft dat de uitkomsten van het Duitse onderzoek de relatie tussen Kyiv en Berlijn kunnen schaden. Duitsland is na de Verenigde Staten de grootste financier van militair materieel voor Oekraïne. President Zelensky heeft altijd ontkend dat Kyiv bij de aanslag in de Oostzee betrokken was. (ANP)

Nieuwe evacuaties in Russische grensregio om Oekraïense inval

De circa 20.000 inwoners van het Russische stadje Gloesjkovo en omgeving hebben woensdagavond laat opdracht gekregen hun huizen te verlaten om de Oekraïense inval in Rusland. Het gebied in de regio Koersk ligt op zo'n twintig kilometer van de grens met Oekraïne.

De gouverneur van Koersk, Aleksej Smirnov, maakte het evacuatiebevel bekend op Telegram. Volgens Smirnov zijn sinds de inval vorige week al meer dan 120.000 mensen in zijn regio op de vlucht geslagen. Tienduizenden anderen hebben de afgelopen dagen te horen gekregen dat ze moeten evacueren.

Het Kremlin meldde eerder op woensdag dat de Oekraïense opmars in Koersk tot staan is gebracht. Oekraïne zegt daarentegen nog steeds terrein te veroveren.

Malinese rebellen ontkennen steun van Oekraïne bij gevechten

Een woordvoerder van Malinese Toeareg-rebellen heeft gezegd dat zijn beweging geen steun heeft gekregen van Oekraïne bij recente gevechten met het Malinese leger en Russische huurlingen. Bij die gevechten eind juli kwamen tientallen Russen en Malinezen om.

Een woordvoerder van de Oekraïense militaire inlichtingendienst leek destijds te suggereren dat de separatistische Toearegs hulp hadden gekregen van Oekraïne. De Toearegs vochten dagenlang bij een dorp aan de Algerijnse grens tegen het leger en leden van het Russische Africa Corps, dat de Malinese militaire junta steunt. Het Africa Corps is een opvolger van de Wagner Groep, een huurlingenbedrijf dat in Oekraïne aan Russische zijde vocht.

De uitspraken van de woordvoerder van de inlichtingendienst waren voor Mali reden om de diplomatieke banden met Oekraïne te verbreken. Buurland Niger deed kort daarop hetzelfde om dezelfde reden. Oekraïne heeft de betrokkenheid bij de gevechten nooit bevestigd.

"Nee, we hebben geen enkele hulp gehad van Oekraïne", zei de woordvoerder van de rebellen woensdag. Ook van andere landen zou geen steun zijn ontvangen.

Mali en Niger hebben, net als buurland Burkina Faso, na een staatsgreep militaire overeenkomsten met voormalige westerse bondgenoten opgezegd en toenadering gezocht tot Rusland.

Wilders vraagt Schoof relatie met Oekraïne te heroverwegen na arrestatiebevel tegen Oekraïense duiker

Nu Duitse justitie drie Oekraïense verdachten in beeld heeft voor h et opblazen van de Nord Stream gaspijpleidingen, wil PVV-leider Geert Wilders aan premier Dick Schoof vragen of hij bereid is de relatie met Oekraïne te 'heroverwegen'. Dat kondigt Wilders aan op X. 

Volgens de PVV-leider zou het grote gevolgen hebben, wanneer zou blijken dat Oekraïne inderdaad achter de aanslag zou zitten. Wilders wil deze week nog antwoord van de premier. 

Op 26 september 2022 werden  drie van de vier buizen van Nord Stream verwoest door explosieven. De gastoevoer van Rusland naar Duitsland kwam daardoor compleet stil te liggen.

Kyiv zegt dat aanval Koersk vordert, Kremlin meldt stoppen opmars

President Volodymyr Zelensky van Oekraïne heeft gezegd dat de Oekraïense aanval op het westen van de Russische regio Koersk doorgaat en dat de opmars vordert. Het Kremlin zegt juist dat de aanval tot staan is gebracht en nu is afgeslagen.

Volgens Zelensky is er woensdagmorgen langs het front een terreinwinst geboekt van 1 tot 2 kilometer en zijn er honderd Russische militairen krijgsgevangen gemaakt. (ANP)

Duitsland komt met aanhoudingsbevel voor Oekraïner om Nord Stream

Duitsland heeft een eerste internationaal aanhoudingsbevel uitgevaardigd voor de aanslag op de Nord Stream-gaspijpleidingen, melden Duitse media. Volgens Tagesschau, die Süddeutsche Zeitung en Die Zeit wordt een Oekraïner gezocht die in Polen woont. Ook twee andere Oekraïners gelden als verdachten.

In september 2022 ontplofte de belangrijke pijpleidingen tussen Rusland en Duitsland in de Oostzee. Vrijwel meteen werd uitgegaan van sabotage en begonnen meerdere landen een onderzoek.

Zweden en Denemarken staakten het onderzoek omdat er geen aanwijzingen waren voor strafbare feiten in hun land, maar in Duitsland zijn die er wel. Eerder berichtten Duitse en internationale media al dat saboteurs vermoedelijk met een jacht, de Andromeda, naar Nord Stream waren gevaren om daar explosieven te plaatsen. De drie verdachten waren mogelijk de duikers die dat hebben uitgevoerd.

Volgens de Duitse media vaardigde Duitsland in juni al een arrestatiebevel uit tegen de Oekraïner, die Die Zeit Vladimir S. noemt en Tagesschau Volodymyr Z. Het is niet zeker of hij zich nog steeds in Polen bevindt, maar in een telefoongesprek met de nieuwssite Tagesschau heeft hij ontkend dat hij iets met de aanslag te maken heeft. (ANP)

Noodtoestand in Russische grensregio Belgorod om aanval Oekraïne

De gouverneur van het Russische grensgebied Belgorod, Vjatsjeslav Gladkov, heeft de noodtoestand uitgeroepen voor de hele regio in verband met voortdurende aanvallen van het Oekraïense leger.

"De situatie in de regio Belgorod blijft extreem moeilijk en gespannen", zei Gladkov in een video die hij op de berichtenapp Telegram plaatste. Dagelijkse beschietingen door de Oekraïense strijdkrachten hebben huizen verwoest en burgers gedood en verwond, voegde hij eraan toe. "Daarom nemen we vandaag het besluit om een regionale noodsituatie af te kondigen."

Gladkov meldde Oekraïense droneaanvallen op twee dorpen in het gebied, Sjebekino en Oestinka, in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag. Daarbij vielen geen gewonden, maar werd wel schade aangericht. Belgorod ligt ten zuiden van Koersk, waar het Oekraïense leger sinds vorige week een militaire operatie uitvoert.

Autoriteiten in de Russische regio's Koersk, Voronezj en Brjansk meldden woensdagochtend dat daar in de nacht drones uit Oekraïne zijn neergeschoten door de Russische luchtverdediging. (ANP)

VS: aanval op Koersk moet Russische troepen uit Oekraïne dwingen

Met de Oekraïense inval in Koersk lijkt Kyiv Rusland te willen dwingen een deel van zijn troepen uit Oekraïne te halen en naar die Russische regio te verplaatsen. Dat stelt een Amerikaanse regeringsbeambte dinsdagavond tegenover persbureau Reuters.

Eerder dinsdag had de Amerikaanse president Joe Biden al verklaard dat de actie in Koersk de Russische president Vladimir Poetin met 'een groot dilemma' opzadelt. Vorige week trok het Oekraïense leger met zo'n 1000 man met tientallen tanks en andere gepantserde voertuigen de grens over. De Verenigde Staten herhaalden dinsdag dat zij op geen enkele wijze betrokken waren bij de actie. Wel zei Biden dat hij in de afgelopen dagen elke vier tot vijf uur op de hoogte werd gehouden van de situatie.

Volgens de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky heeft zijn leger inmiddels 74 plaatsen veroverd in de Russische grensregio, en rukken zijn troepen ondanks 'zware en intense gevechten' nog altijd verder op. Oekraïne heeft geen duidelijke toelichting gegeven over het doel van de actie. Wel verklaarde een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken dinsdag dat het land niet van plan is het veroverde gebied te behouden.

Kyiv wil internationale conferentie over energievoorziening

De Oekraïense regering wil deze maand nog een internationale onlineconferentie houden over de oorlog in het land. Het moet een vervolg worden op de grote internationale conferentie in juni in Zwitserland, waar rond de honderd landen en internationale organisaties spraken over de mogelijkheden voor vrede in Oekraïne.

De conferentie die Kyiv deze maand voor ogen staat, moet zich richten op wat de Russische inval in Oekraïne na 2,5 jaar betekent voor de veiligheid van de energievoorziening. (ANP)

Zelensky claimt de verovering van 74 plaatsen in Koersk

Oekraïne heeft inmiddels 74 plaatsen veroverd in de Russische grensregio Koersk. Dat claimde de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky, die zei dat zijn troepen ondanks zware en intense gevechten steeds verder oprukken.

De Russische autoriteiten spraken een dag eerder nog over 28 door Oekraïne veroverde plaatsen in Koersk. De Oekraïense verrassingsaanval heeft daar ook geleid tot een massale uittocht van burgers. 

Zelensky deelde dinsdag beelden waarop te zien is hoe legerleider Oleksandr Syrsky hem bijpraat over ontwikkelingen op het slagveld. Syrsky zei dat Oekraïne de afgelopen dag nog eens 40 vierkante kilometer heeft veroverd. (ANP)

Rusland ontbiedt Moldavische diplomaat over F-16-geruchten

De Russische regering heeft de regering van Moldavië om uitleg gevraagd over berichten dat daar F-16's geplaatst zouden worden. Moskou zegt een hoge Moldavische diplomaat ontboden te hebben. 

Moldavië zegt dat de zaakgelastigde inderdaad ontboden is, maar ontkent dat er plannen zijn om Westerse straaljagers te plaatsen.

Er gaan mediaberichten rond waarin wordt gesteld dat er F-16's op bases in Moldavië gestationeerd zouden worden om aanvallen te kunnen uitvoeren op doelen in Rusland. Rusland stelt daar ernstige zorgen over te hebben. Moldavië heeft de berichten in een verklaring nadrukkelijk ontkend. (ANP)

Polen koopt bijna honderd Apache aanvalshelikopters van VS

Polen heeft een contract getekend voor de koop van 96 Amerikaanse aanvalshelikopters van het type Apache AH-64E. Die kosten samen ongeveer 11 miljard euro. Dat is inclusief zaken als onderhoud, munitie en training. 

Volgens de Poolse minister van Defensie Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz zullen de helikopters Russische Mi24's gaan vervangen die oorspronkelijk in de Sovjet-Unie gebouwd werden.

Polen wil de strijdkrachten vernieuwen en versterken, vooral sinds de Russische invasie van het buurland Oekraïne in 2022. (ANP)

Oekraïne wil veroverd Russisch grondgebied niet houden

Oekraïne heeft geen interesse om het gewonnen grondgebied in de Russische regio Koersk te behouden. Dat zegt een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken volgens persbureau RBC-Ukraine. Volgens hem zijn de Oekraïense militairen alleen maar de grens overgestoken omdat Rusland vanaf daar aanvallen uitvoert op Oekraïne.

"Helaas kan Oekraïne geen langeafstandswapens gebruiken om zich tegen deze terreur te verdedigen", aldus de woordvoerder. "Dus we moeten de strijdkrachten gebruiken om deze grensgebieden te bevrijden van het Russische militaire contingent dat Oekraïne aanvalt." Hij benadrukte dat Rusland deze zomer al 2000 aanvallen vanuit Koersk had uitgevoerd, zoals president Volodymyr Zelensky eerder zei.

Volgens de woordvoerder behaalt de krijgsmacht in Koersk op dit moment alle relevante doelen, zonder te specificeren wat die doelen zijn. Wel zegt hij dat de inval ook de Oekraïense militairen op andere plekken aan de frontlinie helpt. "Het voorkomt dat Rusland extra troepen naar de regio Donetsk kan sturen en compliceert de militaire logistiek."

Russische marine getraind om doelwitten in Europa te treffen

Rusland heeft zijn marine getraind om in een mogelijk conflict met de NAVO locaties diep in Europa te treffen met kernraketten. Dat meldt de Financial Times (FT) op basis van geheime Russische documenten die de krant kon inkijken.

De FT legde de hand op een geheime presentatie voor Russische officieren die plannen bespreekt voor aanvallen in de vroege fases van een mogelijke oorlog tegen de NAVO-landen, waaronder Nederland. De presentatie, die dateert van voor de invasie van Oekraïne, bevat kaarten van doelen in Frankrijk en een militaire scheepswerf in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Eerder berichtte de krant al dat Moskou het gebruik van tactische kernwapens plande aan het begin van een conflict met een grote wereldmacht. De nieuwe onthullingen tonen hoe Rusland rekening houdt met confrontaties met het Westen diep in NAVO-grondgebied in heel West-Europa. De documenten werden met de FT gedeeld door westerse bronnen.

De documenten, opgesteld tussen 2008 en 2014, bevatten een lijst doelwitten voor raketten die zowel conventionele ladingen als kernkoppen kunnen dragen.  (ANP)

Oekraïne: Duizend vierkante kilometer Rusland onder controle

Oekraïne heeft ongeveer duizend vierkante kilometer Russisch grondgebied onder controle gebracht. Dat zegt opperbevelhebber Oleksandr Syrsky in een bericht dat door de Oekraïense president Volodymyr Zelensky op het sociale medium Telegram is geplaatst. Zelensky zegt opdracht te hebben gegeven voor het opstellen van een ‘humanitair plan’ voor het veroverde gebied in de grensregio Koersk.

Oekraïne begon daar vorige week zijn offensief. Volgens de Russische president Vladimir Poetin probeert Kyiv de eigen onderhandelingspositie te versterken en Rusland te destabiliseren. Ongeveer 180.000 inwoners zagen zich gedwongen te vluchten.

Het gaat om de eerste Oekraïense verovering van Russisch grondgebied sinds de Russische annexatie van de Krim in 2014 en de grootscheepse Russische aanval bijna tweeënhalf jaar geleden op de rest van Oekraïne. (ANP)

Miljarden aan dollar- en eurobiljetten naar Rusland ondanks verbod

Miljarden aan dollar- en eurobiljetten weten Rusland nog altijd te bereiken, ondanks de westerse sancties tegen het land om de oorlog in Oekraïne. Sinds de Verenigde Staten en de Europese Unie de transfer van hun bankbiljetten naar Rusland in maart 2022 hebben verboden, is voor ongeveer 2,3 miljard dollar aan dollar- en eurobiljetten verzonden naar het land. Dat meldt persbureau Reuters op basis van douanegegevens.

De cijfers tonen aan dat Rusland de sancties weet te omzeilen die de import van contant geld blokkeren. Contant geld in de vorm van dollars en euro's blijft daarmee een belangrijk betaalmiddel voor veel handelstransacties tussen bedrijven, zelfs nu Moskou ook het gebruik van deze valuta wil terugdringen.

Rusland evacueert bewoners grensdistrict uit vrees voor aanval

Private businessmen funded the shoestring operation, which was overseen by a top general; president zelensky approved the plan, then tried unsuccessfully to call it off.

EXCLUSIVE: It was the kind of outlandish scheme that might bubble up in a bar around closing time.

In May of 2022, a handful of senior Ukrainian military officers and businessmen had gathered to toast their country’s remarkable success in halting the Russian invasion. Buoyed by alcohol and patriotic fervor, somebody suggested a radical next step: destroying Nord Stream.

After all, the twin natural-gas pipelines that carried Russian gas to Europe were providing billions to the Kremlin war machine. What better way to make Vladimir Putin pay for his aggression?

Just over four months later, in the small hours of Sept. 26, Scandinavian seismologists picked up signals indicating an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption hundreds of miles away, near the Danish island of Bornholm. They were caused by three powerful explosions and the largest-ever recorded release of natural gas, equivalent to the annual CO2 emissions of Denmark.

One of the most audacious acts of sabotage in modern history, the operation worsened an energy crisis in Europe —an assault on critical infrastructure that could be considered an act of war under international law. Theories swirled about who was responsible. Was it the CIA? Could Putin himself have set the plan in motion?

Now, for the first time, the outlines of the real story can be told. The Ukrainian operation cost around $300,000, according to people who participated in it. It involved a small rented yacht with a six-member crew, including trained civilian divers. One was a woman, whose presence helped create the illusion they were a group of friends on a pleasure cruise.

"I always laugh when I read media speculation about some huge operation involving secret services, submarines, drones and satellites," one officer who was involved in the plot said. "The whole thing was born out of a night of heavy boozing and the iron determination of a handful of people who had the guts to risk their lives for their country."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially approved the plan, according to one officer who participated and three people familiar with it. But later, when the CIA learned of it and asked the Ukrainian president to pull the plug, he ordered a halt, those people said.

Zelensky’s commander in chief, Valeriy Zaluzhniy, who was leading the effort, nonetheless forged ahead.

The Journal spoke to four senior Ukrainian defense and security officials who either participated in or had direct knowledge of the plot. All of them said the pipelines were a legitimate target in Ukraine’s war of defense against Russia.

Portions of their account were corroborated by a nearly two-year German police investigation into the attack, which has obtained evidence including email, mobile and satellite phones communications, as well as fingerprints and DNA samples from the alleged sabotage team. The Germany inquiry hasn’t directly linked President Zelensky to the clandestine operation.

Gen. Zaluzhniy, now Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, said in a text exchange that he knows nothing of any such operation and that any suggestion to the contrary is a "mere provocation." Ukraine’s armed forces, he added, weren’t authorized to conduct overseas missions, and he therefore wouldn’t have been involved.

A senior official of the main Ukrainian intelligence service, SBU, denied his government had anything to do with the sabotage, and said that Zelensky in particular "did not approve the implementation of any such actions on the territory of third countries and did not issue relevant orders."

Putin has publicly blamed the U.S. for the attacks. A senior Russian diplomat in Berlin echoed that claim, and said the German investigation findings were "fairy tales worthy of the Brothers Grimm."

In June, Germany’s federal prosecutor quietly issued the first arrest warrant in the case for a Ukrainian professional diving instructor for his alleged involvement in the sabotage. The German investigation is now focusing on Zaluzhniy and his aides, people familiar with the probe say, although they have no evidence that could be presented in court.

The findings could upend relations between Kyiv and Berlin, which has provided much of the financing and military equipment to Ukraine, second only to the U.S. Some German political leaders may have been willing to overlook evidence pointing to Ukraine for fear of undermining domestic support for the war effort. But German police are politically independent and their investigation took on a life of its own as they pursued one lead after another.

"An attack of this scale is a sufficient reason to trigger the collective defense clause of NATO, but our critical infrastructure was blown up by a country that we support with massive weapons shipments and billions in cash," said a senior German official familiar with the probe.

Following the May 2022 pact between the businessmen and the military officers, it was agreed that the former would finance and help execute the project, because the army had no funds and was increasingly relying on foreign financing as it pushed back against the onslaught of its gargantuan neighbor. A sitting general with experience in special operations would oversee the mission, which one participant described as a "public-private partnership." He would report directly to the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, the four-star Gen. Zaluzhniy.

Within days, Zelensky approved the plan, according to the four people familiar with the plot. All arrangements were made verbally, leaving no paper trail.

But the next month, the Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD learned of the plot and warned the CIA, according to several people familiar with the Dutch report. U.S. officials then promptly informed Germany, according to U.S. and German officials.

The CIA warned Zelensky’s office to stop the operation, U.S. officials said. The Ukrainian president then ordered Zaluzhniy to halt it, according to Ukrainian officers and officials familiar with the conversation as well as Western intelligence officials. But the general ignored the order, and his team modified the original plan, these people said.

The general tasked with commanding the operation enlisted some of Ukraine’s top special-operations officers with experience in orchestrating high-risk clandestine missions against Russia to help coordinate the attack.

One of them was Roman Chervinsky, a decorated colonel who previously served in Ukraine’s main security and intelligence service, the SBU.

Chervinsky is currently on trial in Ukraine for unrelated charges. In July, he was released on bail after over a year in detention. Reached after his release, he declined to comment on the Nord Stream case, saying he wasn’t authorized to speak about it.

In a subsequent broadcast interview, he said that the sabotage had two positive effects for Ukraine: It helped loosen Russia’s grip on the European countries supporting Kyiv, and it left Moscow with only one main avenue for channeling gas to Europe, pipelines traversing Ukraine. Despite the war, Ukraine collects lucrative transit fees for Russian oil and gas estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

Chervinsky and the sabotage team initially studied an older, elaborate plan to blow up the pipeline drafted by Ukrainian intelligence and Western experts after Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, according to people familiar with the plot.

After dismissing that idea due to its cost and complexity, the planners settled on using a small sailing boat and a team of six—a mix of seasoned active duty soldiers and civilians with maritime expertise—to blow up the 700-mile-long pipelines that sat more than 260 feet below the sea’s surface.

In September 2022, the plotters rented a 50-foot leisure yacht called Andromeda in Germany’s Baltic port town of Rostock. The boat was leased with the help of a Polish travel agency that was set up by Ukrainian intelligence as a cover for financial transactions nearly a decade ago, according to Ukrainian officers and people familiar with the German investigation.

NORD STREAM 2: WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE CONTROVERSIAL GAS PIPELINE CONNECTING RUSSIA WITH EUROPE

One crew member, a military officer on active duty who was fighting in the war, was a seasoned skipper, and four were experienced deep-sea divers, people familiar with the German investigation said. The crew included civilians, one of whom was a woman in her 30s who had trained privately as a diver. She was handpicked for her skills but also to lend more plausibility to the crew’s disguise as friends on holiday, according to one person familiar with the planning.

The skipper took a short leave from his unit, which had been fighting on the front in the southeast of Ukraine, and his commander was kept in the dark, according to two Ukrainians familiar with the plot.

Ukraine has a long history of training top civilian and military divers. A naval base on the Crimean Peninsula in the past trained deep-sea divers for the purposes of sabotage and demining. It also kept combat dolphins trained to attack enemy divers and blow up ships, according to two senior Ukrainian officers. The base was taken over by Russia after it occupied Crimea, and some of its staff moved elsewhere in Ukraine.

Armed only with diving equipment, satellite navigation, a portable sonar and open-source maps of the seabed charting the position of the pipelines, the crew set out. The four divers worked in pairs, according to people familiar with the German investigation. Operating in pitch-dark, icy waters, they handled a powerful explosive known as HMX that was wired to timer-controlled detonators. A small amount of the light explosive would be sufficient to rip open the high-pressure pipes.

Spending 20 minutes at that depth requires around three hours of decompression, and the person must then refrain from diving for at least 24 hours or risk serious injury.

Inclement weathe r forced the crew to make an unplanned stop in the Swedish port of Sandhamn. One diver accidentally dropped an explosive device to the bottom of the sea. The crew briefly discussed whether to abort the operation due to the bad weather but the storm soon subsided, two people familiar with the operation said.

Witnesses on other yachts moored in Sandhamn noted that the Andromeda was the only boat with a small Ukrainian flag hoisted on its mast.

In the wake of the attack, which took out three of the four conduits forming the pipelines, energy prices surged. Germany and other nations scrambled to nationalize energy companies that handled Russian gas but collapsed after the pipelines were destroyed. Even today Germany is paying around $1 million a day alone to lease floating terminals for liquefied natural gas or LNG, which only partly replaced the Russian gas flows channeled by Nord Stream.

Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the U.S., among others, sent out warships, divers, underwater drones and aircraft to investigate the area around the gas leaks.

Zelensky took Zaluzhniy to task, but the general shrugged off his criticism, according to three people familiar with the exchange. Zaluzhniy told Zelensky that the sabotage team, once dispatched, went incommunicado and couldn’t be called off because any contact with them could compromise the operation.

"He was told it’s like a torpedo—once you fire it at the enemy, you can’t pull it back again, it just keeps going until it goes ‘boom,’ " a senior officer familiar with the conversation said.

Days after the attack, in October 2022, Germany’s foreign secret service received a second tipoff about the Ukrainian plot from the CIA, which again passed on a report by the Dutch military intelligence agency MIVD. It offered a detailed account of the attack, including the type of boat used and the possible route taken by the crew, according to German and Dutch officials.

The Netherlands built deep intelligence-gathering capacity in Ukraine and Russia after Russian-backed paramilitaries downed a Malaysia Airlines flight originating from Amsterdam over eastern Ukraine, two Dutch officials said.

Due to rules governing the sharing of classified intelligence, German police investigating the case weren’t allowed to see the Dutch report that linked Zaluzhniy and the Ukrainian military to the attack, but they were made aware of it by intelligence officials.

German investigators questioned dozens of potential witnesses, scanned the bottom of the sea around the blasts and sifted through masses of data including digital communication, travel records and financial transactions.

They had one lucky break. In rushing to leave Germany, the sabotage crew neglected to wash the Andromeda, allowing German detectives to find traces of explosives, fingerprints and DNA samples of the crew.

Investigators later identified their mobile phone numbers and their Iridium satellite phone. That data allowed them to reconstruct the entire journey of the boat, which moored in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Poland. U.S. authorities sought a court order to obtain from Google the emails a Ukrainian businessman used to lease the boat, and handed them over to the Germans. That Ukrainian businessman had contacted a number of boat rental firms in Sweden as well as in Germany, starting from mid-May 2022.

Investigators then analyzed all mobile phone traffic in the areas where the boat was located, trawling through thousands of connections to distill the relevant data.

At one point they were startled to find out that thousands of German mobile phones were active in the tiny Swedish port of Sandhamn, which was nearly empty at the time the boat was sheltering there from a storm.

It later emerged that a vast cruise ship belonging to a tourist operator passed by and the phones of German passengers briefly linked up with the local cellular mast.

They struggled at one point to secure the cooperation of Polish authorities despite the fact that the saboteurs used Poland partly as a logistical base and stopped in the Polish port of Kolobrzeg.

A port official suspicious of the yacht’s crew alerted police. Poland’s border guard checked the identification of the crew, who produced passports from European Union members. They were allowed to continue sailing north, where they laid the rest of the mines, people familiar with the investigation say.

The entire port was covered by extensive video surveillance, they found. However, despite a history of close cooperation between Warsaw and Berlin in police matters, Polish officials initially refused to hand over the CCTV footage of the port. This year, they told their German colleagues that the footage had been routinely destroyed shortly after the Andromeda departed.

The Polish internal security agency ABW told the Journal that no such footage exists.

By November 2022, German investigators believed Ukrainians were behind the explosion.

Earlier this year, Zelensky ousted Zaluzhniy from his military post, saying a shakeup was needed to reboot the war effort. Zaluzhniy, who has been viewed domestically as a potential political rival, was later appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.K., a position that grants him immunity from prosecution.

In June, German officials issued a confidential arrest warrant for a Ukrainian citizen who the Germans believe was one of the crew members. According to people familiar with the investigation, a van driving the Ukrainian sabotage team from Poland into Germany in 2022 was snapped by a German speed camera, and the man, a diving instructor living with his family near Warsaw, was in the photo.

Authorities in Poland didn’t act on the warrant. The instructor is believed to have since returned to Ukraine. Poland’s failure to arrest him is a major blow to the German probe, because he and other suspects have now been tipped off and will avoid travelling outside Ukraine, people familiar with the investigation said. Ukraine doesn’t extradite its own citizens.

Ukrainian officials who participated in or are familiar with the plot believe it would be impossible to put any of the commanding officers on trial, because no evidence exists beyond conversations among top officials who were, at least initially, all in agreement about wanting to blow up the pipelines.

"None of them will testify, lest they incriminate themselves," one former officer said.
