RYA Certification and jobs in sailing

One of the things that we often hear from our students after they have just completed their first sailing course is this: “this is amazing i love sailing, i want to get a job working on a boat  what can i do where can i work what kind of experience is needed what qualifications should i have”.

Here are a few thoughts on what you can do with each level of RYA training and certifications – and please take all of this with a grain of (sea) salt, and contact us if you have any questions!

RYA Competent Crew well, now you are just that, a competent crew.  Time to practice and get experience.  Sail as much as possible, maybe join a local club, try to sail on different types of boats to figure out if you like cruising or racing for example, and next step, work on your RYA Day Skipper Theory .

RYA Day Skipper Aha! Now that you have passed your RYA Day Skipper theory and RYA Day Skipper Practical , you can skipper a boat by day in familiar waters. This is with family and friends, you are not a commercial skipper at this point…   You could be a good candidate for a delivery crew on a short passage while you enhance your skills. At this level you will most likely not be paid, although you should have your meals and possibly your expenses covered. You could also start working at a sailing or chartering centre , gaining experience by helping moving the fleet for example. Once you have done this a few times, and skippered on your own for fun, you will probably want to move on to the next level and get your RYA Coastal Skipper ticket. Other courses we highly recommend anyway for Day Skippers are the RYA SRC Radio and RYA Diesel Engine to further your knowledge, and they are very useful for your jobs. This is also the time to start working on your RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory (read our blog here for tips!). On a side note, you can have a Commercial Endorsement on your RYA Day Skipper.  More on that later.

RYA Coastal Skipper at this point, you should have some experience, you know your RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory , and you can be a watch leader on a delivery for example, or work as a mate or skipper on coastal passages or deliveries depending on the commercial requirements of the boat. You will start being considered as deckhand or mate on larger vessels such as Sail Training vessels or superyachts.  There will also be positions as race crew depending on your aptitude and interest. Charter companies will also be interested in you to work on their base depending on your qualifications and endorsements, especially if you are interested in engineering , maintenance or technical aspects of sailing. You will need to have a few extra courses to work commercially, but this is a great place to start working your way to gain experience and mileage for the Yachtmaster level certifications. Again, having your Radio and Diesel Engine courses will come in handy as well. At this point, if you are interested in working commercially, you would have your Commercial Endorsement , or obtain your STCW .

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence Now that you have put in your time and energy and gained the qualifying experience, and passed your required courses, (we suggest that besides the ones listed above you also consider RYA Radar ) and the Yachtmaster Coastal Exam, you are a Yachtmaster Coastal!  At this point, you can really start working in earnest. With your commercial endorsement,  it could be on a large vessel as deckhand or mate , and as or charter or flotilla skipper , on a vessel up to 24 metres and up to 20 nautical miles from a safe harbour for example.  Obviously all previously mentioned positions are available to you as well!

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence   This is the most sought-after qualification in the industry and it allows you to really gain access to a plethora of jobs.  Once you are commercially endorsed, you can work as a Master on a vessel up to 200gt up to 150 nautical miles from a safe haven.

This is also the minimum level of training you need if you want to become an RYA Sailing Instructor .

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence Well at this point you have really worked hard for your certificates… and after gaining your experience, studying the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean theory, sailing the required offshore passage, and passing the RYA Yachamtaster Ocean Exam, (and with the commercial endorsement ) your job reach is worldwide as Master of a commercial vessel up to 200gt.  At this point, we want to come sailing with you!

RYA & STCW Courses – Sail, Power, Super-Yacht & Workboat

Route to RYA Yachtmaster (Power or Sail)

The Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence Exam can be taken in a powered or sail craft (i.e. there are two separate disciplines). Much of the route (the shorebased courses) is identical for both disciplines.

There are actually three levels of Yachtmaster ( Coastal, Offshore and Ocean). When people refer to “Yachtmaster” they are generally referring to Yachtmaster Offshore. This article focuses on Coastal and Offshore, our separate article, “ What is an Ocean Yachtmaster ” deals with the higher level of the three.

Yachtmaster-COC

The route to Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore is similar, candidates for both will have followed a similar pathway, but the offshore candidate will have logged considerably more experience prior to exam and will be pushed harder during the exam. Visit our helpful RYA Advanced and Yachtmaster Qualifying mileage page for more information.

The route to Yachtmaster has several stepping stones, most students work through Day Skipper Shorebased and Day Skipper Practical and then Coastal Skipper , however if you already have relevant experience and skills you can consider skipping these courses.

Before considering embarking on a Yachtmaster practical week , you must arm yourself with;

  • Qualifying mileage (power or sail as appropriate)
  • RYA SRC (1 day) or
  • Higher level GMDSS Radio Certificate of Competence  (3-8 day)
  • RYA First Aid (1 day) or
  • STCW Elementary First Aid (1 day) or
  • STCW Medical First Aid (4 day) or
  • Seafish First Aid
  • RYA Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased (6 days or online)
  • Knowledge level to RYA Radar (1 day)
  • Knowledge level to RYA Diesel (1 day)

You are also strongly advised to take the RYA Sea Survival or STW PST Course (1 day), which is required if you intend to operate as a commercial Yachtmaster (most candidates take the exam for commercial reasons and add the RYA Commercial Endorsement however some are leisure boaters and do it for themselves).

Sea Survival PST

Our Yachtmaster practical (preparation and exam) week is 5 days, it takes place on board our motorboat and results in the Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore (Power) Certificates of Competence . If you prefer to take the sail exam we can put you in touch with a sail school once you have all of the above shorebased courses. During the prep week our Instructor will take you through many of the exercises the examiner is likely to throw at you on the final day. We operate the prep week with a maximum of 3 students.

An RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers.

Well known and highly respected worldwide, this qualification proves your experience and competence as a skipper. Unlike the other courses in our Caribbean RYA cruising program, there is no formal training to complete in order to become an RYA Yachtmaster. Grenada Bluewater Sailing highly recommends attending the Yachtmaster Preparation course to fine tune your sailing skills and focus your knowledge base.

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore?

The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal means that you have knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on coastal cruises. You do not necessarily have the experience needed to undertake longer passages.

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore deems you competent to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage during which the yacht is no more than 150 miles from harbour. The RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence can be commercially endorsed in order to work on board British flagged vessels, subject to the MCA’s codes of practice for small commercial vessels. A number of additional training courses and medical fitness certificates are required to be eligible for a commercial endorsement.

Many RYA Yachtmaster candidates choose to complete the Yachtmaster Preparation course for the benefit of tailor-made Caribbean sailing tuition prior to the examination. Provided that you have sufficient experience and sea time, you are then put forward as a candidate for the Yachtmaster exam on board Chao Lay .

Click here for helpful information from the RYA on passing your exam .

RYA Yachtmaster Mile Building Charters

If you do not have the required experience and sea time, we would recommend booking on one of our Grenada Bluewater Sailing mile building cruises . We offer these exciting and adventurous trips throughout the year in the Caribbean – please check our schedule for upcoming events .

Working with a Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate

A commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence will enable you to skipper vessels up to 24 metres in length, operating in category 3,4,5, and 6 waters – up to 20 miles from a safe haven.

Working with a Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate

A commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence will enable you to work as a Master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt in category 1 to 6 waters – that is up to 150 miles from a safe haven.

This Certificate of Competence can used commercially in its own right, or as a pre-requisite for the MCA’s Officer of the Watch qualification, which enables you to work worldwide on vessels of up to 3000gt.

Working with a Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate

A commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence will enable you to work worldwide as a Master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt.

This Certificate of Competence can be used commercially in its own right. It is also a pre-requisite for the MCA’s Chief Mate, Master 500 and Master 3000 qualifications.

Yacht Crew Jobs – What Is Out There?

  • Yacht Crew Jobs – What Is Out Ther...

Sunshine , travel, beautiful places and happy faces. No wonder a lot of people join the yachting industry as a lifestyle choice.  Worldwide yacht crew job opportunities exist for yacht captains, mates, yacht steward/esses, engineers, sailing instructors and delivery skippers as well as a range of support jobs on the management, sales, admin or technical side.

Good news, there is currently a huge demand for skilled and qualified crew on superyachts.

What jobs are available on yachts?

The best yacht captains have a rare combination of sailing, management, technical and people skills. The responsibility of the skipper is to ensure the safety and satisfaction of the crew and guests as well as to manage and maintain the yacht. Generally bigger yachts mean more responsibility and better pay.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore & Master of Yachts 200gt (150nm) is the benchmark qualification for professional yacht skippers. With this you are licensed to skipper up to 200 gross tonnes. Flying Fish Yachtmaster training is widely recognised as an excellent launchpad to this exciting career.

Yachtmaster Courses take place at our training facilities in the UK and Australia.

Mediterranean flotilla skipper is an ideal job for a newly qualified Yachtmaster. The season starts in March or April and the timing is perfect if you have trained in Sydney between September and February.

Charter skipper and mate/hostess is a perfect yacht job for couples . The skipper takes command of the yacht and the mate/hostess acts as crew and looks after guests and onboard catering.

You will be expected to work together as a team providing a high standard of service. There are plenty of yacht crew jobs at the right time of the year in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Yacht delivery skippers and crew may be hired to return a race yacht to its home port after the race or move a private yacht to the Caribbean from Europe for the winter. The skipper earns good money.

The crew can expect onboard expenses and travel costs to be covered. You will get valuable experience and those all important references under your belt. To work as a delivery skipper you need the qualifications gained on a Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Ocean Traineeship.

Yacht instructors are in demand at RYA sailing schools around the world. If you enjoy teaching and are looking for variety in your work, instructing is a great way of improving your own skills and confidence.

You will need to qualify as an RYA Cruising Instructor first.

Superyacht crew work on a huge variety of sail and power vessels. The yachts are referred to as superyachts because they are bigger than 24m in length and no expense has been spared in equipping them. Some of them are literally magnificent.

They are usually owned by very high net worth individuals who expect high standards of presentation and customer service.

STCW Basic Safety Training is required by all crew working on a superyacht.

Superyacht interior crew should consider our steward/stewardess training course as well as RYA Competent Crew so you have basic yachting experience. Our two week super yacht stewardess course (Course) provides you with the minimum qualifications to step on board.

Deck crew will need an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate (for driving tenders), a marine radio operator’s licence and an RYA Day Skipper certificate, in addition to the STCW 95 qualifications.

Superyacht officers, including Captain, Mate and Officer of the Watch, all start with Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts 200gt certification.

Some then work as a deckhand on a superyacht to acquire sea time before studying for command qualifications. Others choose to work as skippers on a smaller vessels before going on to upsize their certificates.

Once you have achieved Master of Yachts 3000gt you can apply for the best command jobs in the industry.

Before you start training, prepare a CV/resume with the qualifications you expect to achieve. Apply for yacht crew jobs online and start networking as soon as you begin your course.

How much will you earn working on a yacht?

Superyacht crew positions are well paid and you have virtually no living expenses to worry about. The bigger the boat the better the starting salary. For a full breakdown of pay, view our yacht salary guide .

Deckhand: USD 30,000-45,000 a year

Chef/cook: USD 36,000-70,000 a year

First mate: USD 48,000-80,000 a year

Captain: USD 60,000-150,000 a year

Mediterranean flotilla work is less well paid but the lifestyle is great. A flotilla skipper earns GBP 120-180 a week.

A couple working together on a busy charter boat in the Caribbean will have joint earnings in the range USD 50,000-80,000 a year, and you can expect to add to this with tips, especially from American guests.

Delivery skippers earn USD 3,000-5,000 a month plus travel costs to and from the delivery.

In the UK, skippers can work for charter companies or RYA sailing schools, earning GBP 85-140 a day in the UK or AUD 200-300 a day in Australia.

Please contact your course administrator or employer in order to best understand the requirements *

Course Topics:

Man in custody after Trump golf club incident was once convicted of possessing a machine gun

The man in custody in connection with what is being described as a second attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump was vocal about U.S. support for Ukraine and has a long criminal and civil court history, including a conviction for possessing a machine gun.

Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was taken into custody after Secret Service agents fired shots at him at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, three senior law enforcement sources said. In 2002, court records show, he was convicted of possessing a weapon of mass destruction — a machine gun.

In that case, a man named Ryan Routh, 36 at the time, allegedly led authorities on a vehicle chase before he holed up at a roofing company in Greensboro, North Carolina, according to an account by the Greensboro News & Record .

A person named Ryan Routh resided for decades in North Carolina, property records show. Most recently, a Ryan Routh lived in the small coastal community of Kaaawa on Oahu’s eastern shore in Hawaii. Authorities there did not immediately respond to an inquiry about any possible contacts with Routh.

Ryan Routh

After the 2002 arrest, authorities said they found the suspect in possession of a fully automatic machine gun, according to the Greensboro News & Record. The arrest coincides with North Carolina criminal court records that include Routh's conviction for possession of a weapon of mass destruction.

Records also show convictions for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of stolen property and hit-and-run. In those cases, which included misdemeanor convictions for violations such as resisting an officer and driving on a suspended license, the defendant received a suspended sentence and parole or probation.

There is no record of time spent in state prison related to those cases in the early 2000s.

Court records show more than 100 criminal counts have been filed against Ryan Routh in North Carolina, most in Guilford County, which underlies Greensboro. The exact outcome of each case was not immediately clear.

Photos show a weapon, a backpack and a GoPro camera on a fence outside Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., taken after what authorities said was an apparent attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump on Sunday.

The court records for a person named Ryan Routh also show a 2003 divorce, as well as multiple civil judgments after contractors and individuals sued a roofing company he helped run.

Routh told the publication Semafor last year that he was director of a group he called International Volunteer Center as part of his attempts to support Ukraine's war against Russia.

Routh spoke of his frustration with Ukraine over what he said were roadblocks to admitting foreign fighters, including Afghan commandos, who either volunteered or were available to join Ukraine's war effort.

“Ukraine is very often hard to work with," he told Semafor. "They’re afraid that anybody and everybody is a Russian spy."

In an interview with Newsweek in 2022, Routh said he was 56 at the time and that he was from North Carolina and had flown to Ukraine from Hawaii. He complained about U.S. leadership as it related to Ukraine and urged greater support for the country from the U.S. government.

"This conflict is definitely black and white," he said. "This is about good versus evil."

Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, after Trump's term in the White House. Trump has promoted a debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine meddled in the 2016 election and has refused to say whether he wants Ukraine to win its war against Russia. He has also expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

There was no immediate indication that Trump's stance on Ukraine motivated Routh's alleged actions Sunday.

Routh had previously criticized Trump on social media after saying he supported his first run for president.

Writing on X, then called Twitter, in June 2020, he said: “@realDonaldTrump While you were my choice in 2106 [sic], I and the world hoped that president Trump would be different and better than the candidate, but we all were greatly disappointment and it seems you are getting worse and devolving; are you retarded; I will be glad when you gone [sic].”

Routh also used X to signal his support for Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and referred to President Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe.”

In one post also in 2020, he said: “Bernie.... give them hell..... fight to the death.”

Routh’s X account  is now  suspended.

It also appears Routh, while he was living in Hawaii, made several small contributions to the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue, including 19 payments in 2019 and 2020 in amounts from $1 to $25, according to Federal Election Commission records. ActBlue did not immediately respond Sunday night to an emailed request for comment about the donations.

On Sunday, Palm Beach County State’s Attorney Dave Aronberg told MSNBC that the federal government is taking over prosecution in the West Palm Beach case, with the U.S. Justice Department expected to file any charges.

He argued that a defendant would not have to open fire for the case to include a charge of attempted assassination.

Aronberg said it was his understanding that Routh was “lying in wait” for Trump before Secret Service agents spotted him. Routh had aimed at the agent who fired at him, Aronberg said; the exact chronology of what took place is still unclear.

Routh was “pretty quiet” and “pretty compliant” after a Martin County sheriff’s traffic unit took him into custody on Interstate 95 one county to the north of Palm Beach, Aronberg said.
